fore word

Happy December everyone! We hope you are enjoying the countdown to Christmas. We have been feeling really festive and Christmassy since we spotted the Coca-Cola Christmas trucks on TV, signalling that the holidays are well and truly coming! There is so much to love about December, the food, the parties, the fashion, ohh and did we mention, the presents! There is no better excuse to kick back and really have fun. Christmas party season brings with it a new set of dilemmas, what to wear? Where to go? How to avoid the office letch’s mistletoe advances? The December issue is here to help with a roundup of fashion must haves on page 36 & 38-39 and a full listings guide for nights out in December, as for the mistletoe action, nothing short of a miracle can save you but our Dec Poser and Socialite are both here to help with the aftermath with festive hangover cures on page 40.

With the all important New Years Eve just around the corner, we can't wait to hit the town and check out the fantastic NYE parties Oxford has to offer, we hear that this year is going to be massive and we will be making it our mission to sample as many parties as possible (it’s a hard life!) Look out for our DV8 photographer and start the new year with your very own 5 minutes of fame in our gallery.

Whatever December brings you we hope you enjoy it! We will see you in January for some New Year’s resolutions, post Christmas fitness and of course a roundup of what went down over the Xmas/NewYear period here in Oxford.

1. Christmas Countdown: Christmas in Oxford officially started with the ‘Oxford Christmas Lights Night’, special guests Kevin Whately and Laurence Fox from TV show ‘Lewis’ did the honours switching on the lights. New Years Eve: It’s the biggest party of the year, so we want to know what will you be doing to bring in 2011? We have an extensive wish list, and with the High Street getting extra competitive and discounting their prices on the run up to Christmas we will be hitting the shops hard... iPads all round?

SANTAS ON THE RUN

Christmas is a time for fun, presents and partying. But amongst all this festive spirit it is also a reminder to think of and support people in need. DV8 thinks that there is no better way to both give and have fun this Christmas than by joining hundreds of Santa’s in the Helen and Douglas House annual ‘Santas on the Run’ race around Oxford.

Aside from providing money for the great work carried out by the hospice, the run is really good fun… Who doesn’t enjoy dressing up like Santa? The run is suitable for all DV8 OXFORD /// DECEMBER 2010

Helen & Douglas House are a registered charity providing respite and end of life care for children and young adults with lifeshortening conditions, as well as support and friendship for the whole family. The two hospice houses are bright, vibrant and positive places, where the emphasis is on living life to the full, even when that life may be short. Every year, Helen and Douglas House do a sponsored Santa Fun Run to raise money for the Hospice. It costs £4.5 million per year to run both hospice houses. Over 80% of this has to be raised via voluntary donations. This means that they are dependent on people like you in the Oxford community. The money raised is well spent making the Hospice a better place for these children and for their care.

Aspire Style truly is a gem of a shop in the heart of Oxford; an independent retailer selling the sort of clothes, accessories, jewellery, shoes & gifts that us girls dream of, but at prices our purses don’t have to. The shops signature style is inspired by all things pretty, girly and vintage, which fits in so well with Oxford’s quirky, vintage inspired street style. You'll be guaranteed to find a gorgeous outfit that will be sure to get you noticed and pick up unique gifts, perfect for a spot of Christmas shopping. What makes Aspire Style so special is the charm and personality of this ‘treasure trove’ shop. It’s a bit like shopping in the

comfort of your very own glamorous girlie boudoir with chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, jewellery strewn across polished wood dressing tables and underwear tumbling out of drawers. DV8’s ladies are particularly impressed with the massive section of Yumi clothes; a firm favourite brand with all of them and of course the ‘oh so pretty’ Tara Scarlett Prom dresses – new this year! The online store is also growing and sells a host of unusual and fun brands including Irregular Choice shoes and handbags!

DV8 loves the television shows Miami and LA Ink, especially the sexy Kat Von D. If however, you can't jet to LA or Miami to get inked, why not have a look at options closer to home. We are big fans of the work at Evolution Tattoo, situated both in Kidlington and their brand new studio in St Aldates. Meet Paul, Mirro, Jin, Jack, Will H and Amy whose extensive experience and dedication ensures the customer gets exactly what they want, so no matter how large or small you want to go they are here to help. intage style entertainment is having a real revival, so when DV8 heard the Queen of Clubs were hosting their very own cabaret show to celebrate their second birthday at Baby Simple, we couldn’t wait to join in the celebrations. The cabaret offered a world of escapism filled with delights and surprises, including lyrical musical comedy, with political and sexual innuendo, and our favourite performance, a fabulous comedy burlesque routine by Miss Kiki Kaboom. At first we weren’t sure what to expect as Kiki took to the stage dressed as a geek! But the routine soon saw her tantalize and tease the audience as she danced her way from geek to naked chic! Any show that includes nipple tassels is a winner isn our books! In the interlude we stumbled upon the vintage gaming arcade which was an inspired use of the back room. We had a moment of real retro excitement when we saw the Simpsons game from circa 1990, does anyone else remember Marge with the vacuum cleaner and Bart wielding the skateboard? Other classic games included the Sonic and Mario collections, Pacman, Streetfighter and Space Invaders which all brought out our inner gaming geek.

The whole evening had a great atmosphere with people dancing, chatting and watching the acts. We really enjoyed the birthday celebrations, and can't wait for the next Queen of Clubs event. Fortunately we won’t have to wait too long as the Queen of Clubs Cabaret have planned a New Years Eve extravaganza, ‘The Butterfly Ball’, complete with snake charmers, sword swallowers, burlesque dancers and much more… Check them out on myspace or facebook for further information.

SIMON WEBBE DJS @ ROPPONGI

C

alling all boy band fans, cast your minds back to the start of the noughties and the days of Blue. With great pop tunes such as ‘One Love’, and their catchy, debut single, ‘All Rise’, I’m sure most of us have found ourselves singing along to a Blue song at some point in the last decade. With a resurgence of boyband comebacks over the last few years, have you ever wondered what Blue are doing today? Chances are you might have spotted Lee Ryan (one of Summertown’s celeb residents!) in and around Oxford. But party goers were in for a real treat when they found former band mate sexy Simon Webbe playing a special celebrity DJ set in Roppongi! The club was packed with excited fans as Simon offered to meet revellers and pose for photos and there was a great party atmosphere.

VIP Saturday’s hosted by Simon Webbe was the place to be. Roppongi looks like they are having a fun filled December, visit their website to keep up to date and don’t miss out on the next celebrity appearance.

H

ip boutique Bar The Oxford Retreat recently went back to the roaring 1920s for its 4th Birthday Party. The theme was prohibition and everybody there was certainly dressed the part; from pearls, pinstripes and gangsters to feathers, flappers and trilbies!

DV8 joined them for a spot of fancy dress, ‘illegal’ cocktails, dancing and teacakes – there were even a few poker games! Carrying on with the vintage authenticity was a 1920s band playing jazz, blues & ragtime all night and the clientele were certainly not shy in getting the dancing started – that’s what prohibition does for you! The celebrations carried on until late and the whole bar was packed with people recreating 1920s dances such as the Charleston, Toddle & Shimmy. The event’s tagline ‘Prohibition has made nothing but trouble – Al Capone’ was definitely true on the evening and the steady supply of moonshine meant there was dancing until the early hours and any thoughts of going to work in a 2010 office the next morning were far from anyone’s mind.

I

t’s not long until the most important event on the Oxford fashion scene is upon us, yes that’s right, we are talking Oxford Fashion Week, so all you fashionistas out there be sure to put the 28th Feb - 6th March in your diaries. Before the excitement of all the catwalks, big hair and couture fashion, DV8 went down to House Bar to check out the open casting to become the face of OFW and auditions for the various shows that will happen over the week. To be honest we also wanted to audition ourselves!

The amount of aspiring models was overwhelming; the bar was packed all night with gorgeous girls and boys in some amazingly chic and hip ensembles and we’re sure that the judges have now got their work cut out choosing just one to be the face! However casting was also taking place for the various shows such as lingerie, concept and couture so we’re sure we will be seeing many of these faces again… DV8 had a great night at House; a seriously stylish bar that has graced the pages of Vogue (as a fashion shoot location) and featured in Elle magazine’s Top 25 Bars of 2010! Making it a seriously fitting venue for such a fabulous fashion event! House is perfect for a sophisticated drink with friends, a cosy & romantic date or a lively Friday night in the games room. It was certainly buzzing with cool chaps and funky fashionistas when we were there. You can vote for your favourite ‘Face’ on Facebook – check it out on www.facebook.com/OxfordFashionWeek. Plus keep an eye on the OFW and DV8 websites for further details. DV8 OXFORD /// DECEMBER 2010

ukui always know how to throw a great party, we recently enjoyed our Halloween trip with them to hell, but for their second birthday, we were definitely transported back to paradise. With the winter now firmly set in, we were excited to escape the freezing ‘real world’ in favour of the hottest beach party of the year. Boasting one ultra-tropical club venue, complete with beach balls, inflatable palm trees and a sand filled dance floor! Oxfords fashion elite, students and locals alike joined the Kukui team to celebrate 2 years of Oxford’s best tiki club in style.

The drinks were flowing with the best Piña Colada this side of Puerto Rico. The dance floor was filled with party goers as DJ Granty H and Nathalie Morel played the hottest tunes accompanied by a live Sax and Bongo player whose beats whipped the crowd into frenzy. It was an unforgettable night, and if you missed it shame on you! Be sure to look out for the next Kukui party… New Years Eve anyone?

ast month DV8 were treated to meeting Calum Best at Oxford’s nightlife hot spot Roppongi, but this month we partied with man of the moment Mark Wright! The self-proclaimed ‘Mr Essex’ is of course the outright star of the UK’s answer to ‘The Hills’ and overnight success ‘The Only Way Is Essex’! The night started off well and we enjoyed some awesome tunes; a funky mix of classic dance tracks, current club favourites, soul, funk and RnB. We also sampled some cocktails from the extensive list and mingled with lots of Roppongi regulars, fans of Mark and plenty of newcomers trying out this hip new hang out.

The atmosphere was buzzing from the start, but things certainly heated up once Mark arrived. There was a constant queue to the VIP area where Mark was hanging out with his mates, including fellow celeb Jack Tweed. The main crowd being gorgeous girlies anxious to get their photo taken with the reality tv star. DV8 had our own five mins with the man and he is very much the nice boy he claims to be, plus he’s even better looking off screen!

Their rags to riches story will always be a winner, but do they have what it takes to crack America? The title track, ‘Love Live Life’ is a must listen, and you can expect the usual blend of funky, melodic and hip hop tunes with an American twist. We can’t wait!

Christmas Party Season. It’s a special time. I say special, because any season that involves equal portions of magical and hideously disastrous endings to evenings needs a vague nametag.

Anyone you ask can instantly recall their best and worst Christmas party experience ever, along with many in between. My best? Probably one of the rare Christmases I arrived home in one piece, still looking alright and having snagged a phone number and a mistletoe kiss.

But let’s face it, you want to hear about the worst, don’t you? There’s some stiff competition – like the night I was so late for a party I had to take a shortcut around a dodgy estate, through a hedge and across a muddy field, arriving with mud hooves instead of shoes and bits of twig in my hair. Or the night I went a tad too far on the Malibu and cokes and ended up throwing up on a pavement in front of a policeman. Or maybe the night where my friend Hannah found out that not one, not two, but three of her closest friends (yep, including me) had got off with the bloke she really fancied, while she hadn’t succeeded.

We’ve all been there and done it, so here’s hoping this Christmas party season is fuller of sparkle, fun and cocktails than colleague embarrassments, wardrobe malfunctions and, well, puke. Take it easy with the booze (especially at the work do) and have a great time – oh, and if you see me out and about, mine’s an Espresso Martini (and the Malmaison do a great one). You can catch Sophie weekday mornings from 7am hosting The Morning Glory on Glide FM 107.9

Nestled amongst the chain restaurants and shops on Little Clarendon Street is AlAndalus a delightfully intimate and authentic tapas restaurant. DV8 were excited to sample what Al-Andalus had to offer. We were pleasantly surprised by the wine list which featured regional Spanish wines. Next came the food with a range of tapas dishes, as well as daily specials that were well worth a look. The friendly and knowledgeable Spanish staff did a great job of guiding us through the menu options. We eventually decided to go for: Champiñones al ajillo, a delicious dish of sautéed

mushrooms with garlic and parsley. Fritos de queso de cabra a la mile, deep-fried medallions of goats cheese with honey. Espárragos plancha, grilled wild asparagus wrapped with Serrano ham. Finally we had Pinchos de pollo marinado, grilled chicken breast pieces on skewers, marinated in homemade bbq sauce. Every dish arrived piping hot, beautifully presented and most importantly full of flavour. The great thing about tapas is that it encourages conversation and sharing making it especially good for those prone to food envy as you get to sample every dish!

JERICHO TAVERN 56 Walton Street, Oxford

The best thing about Sunday’s (apart from the massive lie in to recover from the night before) has to be Sunday comfort food and the traditional Sunday Roast. This experience is made ten times better if you can get somebody else to do the cooking… With this in mind DV8 headed to the Jericho Tavern on Walton Street, made famous as a local music venue graced by the likes of Radiohead and Supergrass, we wanted to see what gastro treats this pub had to offer us! First up, we chose the roast loin of pork with Kentish apple and sage sauce served with carrots, Savoy cabbage,

roasted parsnips and potatoes, Yorkshire pudding and of course, plenty of gravy… It was a hearty roast which really hit the spot. We also had the beer battered haddock, served with chips, minted mushy peas and tartare sauce, a true British classic that didn’t fail to please. For desert it had to be the chocolate brownie filled with vanilla pod ice cream, it actually is as amazing as it sounds! We finished off our meal with a game of giant Jenga - it really was the perfect way to enjoy a lazy Sunday afternoon. We recommend that you give it a try!

YO! SUSHI 73-75 George Streett, Oxford

The idea of food being constantly served to you on a rotating conveyor belt ranks up there in our top 5 fantasies, so we were really excited to head down to Yo! Sushi on George Street to try out the craze that has made Japanese dining a mainstream feature on the English High Street. Yo! Sushi boasts a range of 91 Japanese inspired dishes, containg meat, fish or vegetables. We decided that for our first experience we should go for a real mix of what was on offer and of course what we could excitedly grab from the conveyor belt! We decided to try a couple of the hot dishes, starting with the Prawn

Korroke, a crispy Japanese breaded prawn and potato croquettes with kimchee mayonnaise sauce, a yummy choice which broke us in nice and gently! Next up was hot coils of spicy pepper squid topped with red chilli giving it a nice spicy kick. Next, our favorite the delicious Beef Tataki, premium black pepper seared beef with coriander dressing (mental note to get some to take home), so far so good! Now time for the sushi, we went for the Salmon Selection, three slices of premium Scottish salmon sashimi, two salmon nigiri and two salmon maki. Our verdict - raw has never been so good!!

BAR TENDER OF THE MONTH LIVING ROOM’S TOM JOHNSON How long have you worked in the Living Room? Three and a Half years. Can you flair? Yes. I can spin a bottle or two, although am looking to learn some more skills. What is your signature drink? Jagwa Juice this is one I have made up myself (check out the cocktail of the month). How many cocktails do you offer? 50 plus. What is your favourite thing about working in the Living Room? The staff and the customers, its a great atmosphere everyday of the week. The Living Room, The Castle Complex, Oxford

Your moment is over Vitamin Water - new drinks brand on the block, Neuro, looks set to change the future of functional beverages with their fabulous range of delicious tasting drinks.
