fore word

Hello DV8 Fans, Could we be any more excited about the summer holidays? Well no, frankly! Ok we may not be 15 anymore but now school’s out it feels like summer should really start (please weather!) This month we took some time out to enjoy Cowley Road Carnival in the Park, our special report (pg 10) has the low-down on all of the best bits. We also tried out brand new nights Hype at No.9 and LocoMondo at Lava Ignite (pg 8 and 12). We’ve been having a bit of a fashion moment with the DV8 cover shoot (page 03) featuring our 5 stunning ‘face of’ competition winners, and our interview with up-and-coming Oxford based lingerie designer Emelia Penny, take a look at her gorgeous girly creations (pg 36). With a new month upon us, the questions of the moment are… What is August going to bring? And what are you most looking forward to? Well, most importantly August brings an extra day off with the summer bank holiday, we hope it’s going to be a scorcher! Oxford pubs and clubs are abuzz with various entertainments that will be laid on, and of course a couple of late licenses will ensure we here at DV8 will be partying til the sun comes up! We will also be trying out two exciting new Oxford watering holes, The Rickety Press, the newest addition to Jericho’s fine selection of top-notch places to eat, drink & be merry and the former Brickworks pub now renamed The Library, which has pledged to become the best pub on Cowley Road! If all that’s not enough to keep you busy, don’t forget you can always catch up between issues on all the latest news and events in Oxford at www.facebook.com/DV8OxfordMagazine DV8 Team x

During July we held a photoshoot for the next 5 cover models for DV8 Oxford..... This was probably the best fun we have ever had! (and we wish we could do covershoots every day!) In the last issue, we ran a story of Oxford DV8’s first ever cover model photoshoot. That was such a success that we decided to hold an ambitious, day-long shoot with the other five future cover models. This, is the behind-thescenes story of a long but hugely enjoyable, and successful, day. The venue for our epic day’s shooting? Anne Veck’s hair studio, on The Causeway in Bicester (www.anneveckhair.com), with Anne herself taking the reins of the hair and make-up, along with her talented team of Rebecca Stuart, Aneta Kucinska and Susan Shacklock. Judging by the photos and the reaction of the models themselves it’s safe to say they did a great job. Anne was in her element directing the shoot while also finding time to sculpt some fantastic hairstyles and explained the importance of trying to make the models feel comfortable when putting together an outfit for a photoshoot. Indeed it seemed that the salon was custommade for the shoot with its purple walls with yellow flashes, and artistic photos of impressive and complex hairstyles all complimenting the fantastic lighting that gave the whole place a bright, fresh ambience. It was interesting being around all the creativity, talking to the stylists and finding out about their latest makeup ranges, such as New CID Cosmetics, which Anne was particularly happy with. The photographer, Norbert Pietraszek (check out his website

www.pietraszek.co.uk) was quietly professional, guiding the models through the poses he wanted while encouraging them to smolder and even give the occasional pout in front of the lens. Occasionally a curious passer-by stopped outside the bay window of the salon and one even came to the door to ask what was going on. The weather outside wasn’t ideal, with a steady drizzle continuing for much of the morning. Fortunately it had cleared up in time to allow Norbert to head outside to take some real-world shots of the models. The models involved in this epic day-long photoshoot? Stephanie-Jane, Racine, Roanna, Kelly and Rebecca were all generous enough to dedicate their Sunday to us and this dedicated attitude resulted in some impressive photos. One thing it’s easy to overlook when you see a photoshoot in a magazine, is that the models themselves are people rather than just images on the page. We were fortunate enough to be able to get to speak to them when

they were relaxed and after any early nerves had been eased. Experience varied from international modelling in Ibiza, a Miss Oxford finalist, even modelling in a music video, while a couple were making their first step in front of the professional photographer’s lens. Whatever their background, they certainly all did their bit to look sexy and fabulous, while also making the experience good fun for everyone. Anne even arranged for a spread to be put on at lunch, which was well received by all and helped this writer to take away some of the taste of hairspray that had built up through the morning. Of all of the experiences that the photoshoot had to offer, the clouds of hairspray took some getting used to and caused me at least one coughing fit, which created some amusement among the models and stylists who has experienced it many times before and were used to it. We managed to chat to the clothes stylist when she had a moment between creating the looks that will grace the magazine cover. Lenie Boya, whose Cowley Road shop Lenie’s Revival Boutique Dress Agency provided the clothes for the day, explained that she had worked to put together looks that complimented the models’ personalities while also making something unique and interesting. Each model showcased an outfit for the day-time, as well as another glamorous look for the evening, which made for some great contrasts in style, as well as some vibrant combinations. As Lenie put it, she stocks designer labels from across the world, both well-known and more exotic and obscure. Trust is important for her and it became clear as the day went on that the models had plenty of trust in her judgement, while working with her to bring their own personality to each look. Should you take time to head over to her Aladdin’s cave of a boutique you will find an array of brand new and lightly used clothes, which Lenie will be more than happy to give advice about choosing from the wide range of unique styles. It seemed like the end came too soon, but when it did everyone went their separate ways looking forward to the fruits of their labour and already excited about what the photos would look like. Who knows if the future will hold any further DV8 fashion shoots, but this experience has been invaluable and we’ve gained some new friends, as well as cementing some existing ones. The entire collection of photos from the cover shoot can be found on our facebook page www.facebook.com/dv8oxfordmagazine

o.9 nightclub has recently had a change in ownership and with that change comes a fresh start and influx of some new and exciting club nights. The first of which is HYPE, the new Friday night offering, which promises to play a selection of the finest Hip Hop, RnB, Bashment, UK Funky and Grime.

The opening night kicked off in style with guest DJ Seani B (from1Xtra fame) on the decks along with host Rodney P and Spex and Boi Wonder. The top line-up confirmed that No.9 plans to be a main weekend contender. The dance floor was packed, so we headed up to the second floor to check out what was happening in the VIP area. The champagne was flowing and everyone was clearly having a good time, revelers kicked back in the black leather sofas enjoying the classic RnB tunes being pumped out. Judging from the success of the launch night, Hype is definitely here to stay, and worth checking out. If you want to save some money on entry, then get your name on the guest list with Clubbing-in-Oxford (check them out on facebook). We think you should believe the HYPE and head on down!

The Cowley Road Carnival is always something we look forward to here at DV8. What better way to spend a splendid summer Sunday with your mates in your local area? The sheer colour of it all, the urge to just start dancing there and then and the communally shared excitement is enough to forget that Monday morning is only a few hours away. This year’s Carnival had more of a festival vibe than previous years as it was hosted in South Park rather than the Cowley Road. The carnival is the South East’s biggest free community event and definitely

Page 10

didn’t disappoint. The carnival spirit was still very much alive as the field was covered with eager carnival goers ready to check out all that the day would bring. The carnival was bigger than ever, with four stages, over 60 charming traders’ stalls (there was a bit too much delicious ice cream to choose from!) lots of family fun activities and an incredible amount of international food to try. The Carnival procession started at noon and was what can only be described as a stunning visual delight, with almost 700 children

music. We can’t not mention the fantastic ‘The Original Rabbit Foot Spasm Band’ (who had just recovered from their first mud-fuelled Glastonbury gig) who we’d quite like to book for our wedding as they made Motown cool as we danced away to their giant funky jazz beats. They seemed very excited to be on home turf and put on a smashing show, we certainly didn’t need to be at a massive festival to enjoy such fine music!

“This years carnival was bigger than ever”

There was so much to see and hear we can hardly fit it all in, with over 17 music and dance acts performing on the Main stage, plus 12 performers from Talent Oxford. The Ark T Stage also boasted a multitude of acts including local bands, rappers and acoustic artists. And of course our old favourites ‘Horns a plenty’ (who original formed just to perform at the carnival) were doing their rounds too, interweaving between the crowds and surprising us with their lively mix of

Carnival in the Park was a perfect way to celebrate local life and local people; we can’t wait to see what 2012 brings! We are hoping for a return to the Cowley Road.

nternational nights always end up being the craziest nights (maybe Brits are just too reserved?). When we heard that Lava Ignite was putting on a new international Night every Thursday through the summer, we couldn't wait to go and check it out. Our expectations were met with the club full with cool euro kids hitting the dance floor, to a wide array of music, from carnival beats to salsa inspired tunes from the world over (it made us want to enrol in a dance class, so we too could be as good!). Lots of balloons scattered the club, giving it a really feel good vibe and everyone there was out to have a good time!

The upstairs room housed more dance inspired music, with glowsticks and an even more packed dance floor, with groups of people mixing and getting to know each other, while the drinks were flowing (some fantastic drinks offers are to be had there on a Thursday night). All in all, we give this a massive thumbs up! For those of you not lucky enough to be visiting sunnier climes this summer, don’t worry Loco Mondo is bringing the international party to you.

outique clothing store Booty had been very busy over the last few months scouring the city for a potential model to be the face of the brand. The list was whittled down to 15 finalists, with only one lucky person to take the crown. How was the winner to be chosen? Part of that responsibility fell on the shoulder of celebrity Guest Judge Maria Fowler (Pictured, wearing a poppy print dress, £30, Booty), from The Only Way is Essex, who helped crown Shannon Brennan the eventual winner, who will now be the face of Booty’s 2011 promotional campaigns.

We attended one, a tea party for grown ups with Alice-inspired cocktails and food at the Living Room in the Castle complex. Drinks were served in teapots and labeled with ‘drink me’ tags in tribute to the classic book. Guests were dressed in a wonderful array of Alice costumes, and had come from all over the UK to celebrate the event. Even the Mad Hatter turned up to DJ! All DV8 can say is curiouser and curiouser!

With American flags, American drinks and not to mention of course, a classic American pastime, in the form of an awesome (and free) BBQ in the beer garden. This gave us enough energy to party all the way through to the 5th July.

want to get the No.9 name out there, some people may still think we are ‘Escape’ but that closed 8 months ago. We are something completely different. What new weekly nights will you be bringing us? Thursdays: Blush Fridays: Hype Saturdays: Saturdays @ No9 We are also running VIP packages on each of the nights, so get in contact if you have something to celebrate. ... And don’t forget the International Night which will be launching soon. Before No.9, what was your background? AB: I’m originally from Essex, I came to Uni in Oxford, ended up working in a couple of bars/clubs Po Na Na, Roppongi and then ended up managing this place. SF: I’m actually a journalist by trade, and previously worked for BBC Oxford, then moved into freelance publicity. I got married, and had some kids, then got a nightclub! What do you do on your nights off? AB: Spend time with my girlfriend, and go out to other bars and clubs around Oxford. SF: Read, kids, take the wife out, go to the theatre. Where are your favourite places to go out in Oxford (aside from No.9?)? AB: House Bar, The Living Room. I like the more chilled out relaxed places away from the thumping music that I listen to at work! SF: I really like the live music scene in Oxford, there is always something going on. I like bars like the Oxford Blue and The Half Moon, good for live music. Have you got any special events in the pipeline/ key dates for the diary? AB: Every Friday is going to be massive, make sure you don’t miss out! We are also going to have events on selected Saturdays throughout the summer. SF: The summer bank holiday in August... Watch this

space, it’s going to be a big one. Where can our readers find more information about No.9? Web, facebook, mailing list? Facebook, we have pages set up for our nights, search for: ‘HYPE @ No9’ ‘Blush @ No9’ ‘@No9 Nightclub Oxford’ The website is coming soon.

INBETWEENERS MOVIE AUGUST 17TH Will, Neil, Simon and Jay, four socially troubled eighteen-year-olds from the south of England go on holiday to Crete.

It’s funny what death can do for your career.

Don’t get me wrong, Amy Winehouse was already a megastar before her sad demise, but recently she’d been more often in the headlines for shambolic public appearances, performances and gossip than for her music career.

Her last top 10 single in the UK was ‘Rehab’ in October 2006. She hadn’t even been in the charts since January 2008, when her single ‘Back To Black’ inched back inside the Top 30. Though ‘Back To Black’ was a No.1 album for her, from recent form it seemed less and less likely that her planned third album would materialise in the recent future.

In the 24 hours following the discovery of her body, Amy’s music shot back into the charts, with her ‘Back To Black’ album going to number one in the iTunes chart in 14 countries including the UK – and making at least the Top 5 in every iTunes chart worldwide.

There is now talk of her record company releasing a third album – said to be ‘at demo stage, but full of material’ – posthumously. A duet she recorded with legendary crooner Tony Bennett will hit shelves in September. Death, it seems, doesn’t have to mean the end. The saddest thing, apart from her preventable, premature death itself, is the sheer waste of a stunning talent. She remains the most successful British female ever at the Grammy Awards, winning five in 2008, and despite her demons possessed a truly remarkable, unique voice and a fantastic, viscerally honest way with words. Stars from Lady Gaga to Russell Brand have paid tribute but perhaps the oddest, yet most unsurprising tribute came from her local pub, the Hawley Arms: “We are shocked and deeply saddened by the news of Amy’s death. Apart from her extraordinary musical talent, she was a special person with a good soul and this should not have happened.” Hear hear. You can catch Sophie weekday mornings from 7am hosting The Morning Glory on Glide FM 107.9 t

THE OXFORD RETREAT

The Oxford Retreat is an independently owned boutique bar and restaurant which prides itself on fresh, homemade food, simply cooked using locally sourced, seasonal produce.

The OR strikes a skilful balance between busy bar/pub and intimate restaurant. If you’re after a quiet, tasty, well priced meal then DV8 would suggest an early booking, but if it’s atmosphere that you’re after then from 8ish onwards the OR attracts a pleasant and diverse crowd which builds throughout the evening and on into the early hours. Perfect for a fun dinner for two or a larger party booking.

The restaurant area is cosy and sophisticated with leather chairs, wooden paneling, candlelight and plenty of original character. The kitchen is open (which we think is always a good sign!) and means that you can have a nosy at the chefs while they work.

Hythe Bridge Street, Oxford, 01865 250309

So what did we eat? To start we went for the Creamy Garlic Field Mushrooms on toasted bread with balsamic syrup (£7.00 for a large portion to share). Delicious! To follow we were both after some rustic British grub so we opted for the Slow Roasted Belly Pork with Honey Mustard, roasted carrot, applemash, green vegetables and a rich wine jus (£12.00) and the Steak n’ Chips with grilled tomato, fried field mushrooms, rocket salad and pepper corn sauce (£22.00). The presentation of both dishes was mouthwatering. The steak was perfectly cooked to order and the chunky homemade chips were first-rate. The pork was succulent and tender and complemented well by the applemash. Both courses were washed down with plenty of vino! By this time we were stuffed and forced to resist the tempting list of desserts, instead opting for a shot (a palate cleanser!)

COCKTAILS OF THE MONTH Thirst, Park End Street BRAMBLE OR NOT

Served in a Sling glass, over crushed glass. Lime Vodka Soda Creme de Mure Slice of Lime

The Bramble is a cocktail that has seen its way onto almost every UK cocktail bar menu. It is a testament to its excellent flavour and name that the guys at thirst have brought it bang up to date with their ‘Bramble or Not’, a twist on the classic, using vodka instead of traditional gin. This is a deliciously refreshing drink with the lime giving it a pleasurable bitter kick. Our advice, order one, and head into the garden, kick back and relax. DV8 OXFORD /// August 2011

Margaritas are a classic staple on any cocktail menu. The best thing is their versatility; you can have them on the rocks, straight up, or frozen! At DV8, it is probably our cocktail of choice, and we would definitely consider ourselves connoisseurs of the margarita world (we have had enough to make this our self-appointed title). For us this was one of the best we have tried in a long time!

CULINARY DELIGHTS

COPA 9-13 George Street St, Oxford,

Copa Oxford, has long been a favourite of DV8, with its stylish contemporary décor, great central location (perfect for starting your night) and its impressive selection of continental beers. Recently we’ve been hearing some great things about the food coming out of Copa, with the launch of a new menu, boasting great home cooking and some fantastic food offers. Inlight of this, we decided to check it our for ourselves! We went for the meal deal with two meals for just £9.95! The menu boasts all of the classics from Suffolk Farmer’s Pork Sausages and Mash, through to Chilli Con Carne, in fact all the choices on the menu are favourites of the staff at DV8. We opted for the mouth-wateringly tasty-sounding Homemade Beef and Coriander Burger. When it arrived we were impressed, delighted and scared by the size of it, laid neatly in a ciabatta bun, topped with a healthy dose of

lettuce and tomato (as it was SO healthy we decided to add bacon and cheese, it balances it out right?) The burger came with a side of chips (no burger would be complete without them!) This was as tasty as it was good looking! Another classic on the Menu was the Copa Caesar Salad, a great vegetarian option for you non meat eaters out there, (note: you can add chicken and bacon if you like!). This was a delicious salad of Cos Lettuce, shaved Grana Padano, cherry tomatoes, olives and ciabatta croutons with a creamy Caeser dressing. We loved every mouthful. Caesar salad is one of the best salads, especially when it is served up with the right proportion of ingredients. The chefs at Copa have nailed it! There was of course a dessert menu to choose from, however these meals left only room for us to sample some of the continental beers on offer. If you want great priced, home cooked comfort food, then a trip to Copa is in order.

HAIR

SEVENTIES-ROCK It’s time to embrace the past with a 70’s revival – voluminous movement and tousled textures. Think combinations of disco fever flicks, un-kempt grunge lengths, and shaken up rock-inspired waves. Keep it young, keep it fun and definitely keep it stylish.

Looking for summer holiday hair inspiration? Let Matrix Artistic Director Anne Veck help you get those hot summer looks. The word from the Paris runway this year was ‘easy glamour,’ with models sporting romantically undone, natural styles characterised by a rough centre parting and tousled texture. The classic bun deconstructed into a messy ‘up do’ was another style staple – the perfect accessory to any stylish summer look. While at London Fashion Week, three hot hair looks rocked the runways …

How to get rock-inspired waves: • Prep the hair with an extra strong mousse and blast dry to build texture . Anne recommends Go Big from the Matrix Design Pulse range. • Section the hair into two across the head at the crown • Tong the front section in small sections away from the face with a centre parting and pin to set • Tong the back upwards in larger sections and pin • Just before you go out, take out pins and brush through, creating flicks and lift. Secure using a hold and gloss spray such as Hair Lock by Matrix

BEATNIK BOB Vintage ‘worn-in’ styles create the ultimate elegant, night-time look. Pre-Raphaelite lengths romantically tucked behind ears with flirting wisps and 1920ʹs Marcel waves tumbling loosely around the neck line are firm favourites. For the ultimate period finish, regal and rolled ‘faux bobs’ with strong centre partings were seen in both London and Paris: How to get a rolled faux bob: • Blow-dry the hair smooth using a

volume mousse and place a strong centre parting in the hair. Anne uses Amplify Volumising Foam from the new Total Results range

How to get a Beatnik Bob: • Section the hair at the radial, take the front section and loop over ears and secure using elastic at the back of the head • The remaining hair is rolled under and pinned into a ‘faux bob’ shape • Finish with a shine mist and hairspray Matrix Amplify hair spray is ideal. TWISTED PLAIT Up-do’s are a must-do this season and braids/plaits came in all shapes and sizes on the catwalks, knotted, tangled, twisted and pinned into gravity defying shapes. From distressed static textures for that effortless Rapunzel style to modern knots for a sleek sculptured look – it’s the season to do the twist.

How to get a distressed on-trend plait: • Prep hair with a volume mousse such as Amplify Wonder Boost Root Lifter and roughly dry to build texture • Divide hair in two uneven sections and plait both from the back of the head forwards, close to the scalp and secure • Distress the plait with the fingers to emphasise the texture • Finish with a light coating of a hairspray and shine spray with Frizz Fix Hair Spray by Matrix Biolage. To get sorted for summer call Anne and her team on 01865 727007 (Oxford salon) or 01869 248495 (Bicester salon)

DV8 CAUGHT UP WITH LOCAL FASHION DESIGNER EMELIA PENNY, AND TALKED OUR FAVOURITE SUBJECT.... UNDERWEAR Inspired by vintage silks, laces and shapes, La La LouLa intimates embody romance, femininity and luxury, with a subtle hint of classic Hollywood glamour. Using vintage details, flirty frills, and beautiful silks, satins and laces, La La LouLa forms an enchantingly modern take on vintage intimates by blurring traditional boundaries of underwear and outerwear. How did you get into fashion design and what was your inspiration? It actually happened by accident. I've always loved fashion and had become more and more interested in vintage clothes. I went to University to study graphic design but didn’t really enjoy it and only did a year of the course. I decided to teach myself how to sew, I made a couple of tops out of this beautiful vintage silk/satin I found. Lots of friends at uni loved it and people wanted to buy them, that was when I realised I could potentially pursue a career in fashion. I got involved with Oxford Fashion Week, where I got to showcase some of my designs at the lingerie show in the Malmaison alongside some absolutely incredible designers and it's all gone from there really.

What skills do you need to be a fashion designer? For the initial design process you need to be creative, have an eye and flair for colour, shapes, structures, textures and lines. I think you need to be aware of what rivals and other designers are doing but not be intimidated and stay focused on your own goals. Try and draw inspiration from everything in your everyday life. I have learnt that being a fashion designer is as much about business as it is about the designs. So it is important that you have some form of interest in that side also.

“I draw a lot of initial inspiration from the old hollywood glamour era”

What has been your inspiration for spring/summer 2011? A lot of my collection is inspired by the beautiful materials, laces, ribbons and trims that I find. I will look at everything and mess around to come up with different shapes, colours and textures and see what works. I also draw a lot of initial inspiration from the old Hollywood glamour era, vintage advertisements and retro pin-up-girl outfits which give me an idea of how underwear was and how that can be interpreted to make something different and unique today.

If you weren't talking to us right now, what would you be up to? I'm always so busy! I'm currently working on getting our new website updated so I would probably be working on that. We're hoping for it to be live by August. I'm also starting to prepare the Autumn/Winter 2011 collection so have been designing and organising photo shoots which I love doing. If I wasn't working I'd probably be out with my friends somewhere in Oxford having a few chilled drinks. What about fashion as a business, is it going well? The fashion Industry as a whole is so strong and is such a massive part of the UK's economy and on a global scale as well. For us, the response has just been so fantastic. After fashion week people’s reactions to the designs really have been so unbelievable.

If you could do anything else, what would it be? If I could sing I'd love to be a singer. But I cant! I think if I wasn’t doing this I would probably go into another form of design based business. It would definitely have to be something creative.

What advice do you have for a young person who wants to be a fashion designer? I completely taught myself how to sew and don’t have any specialist qualifications to back me up so I'd probably say that anyone that has a flair for design and a lot of passion should go for it. A lot of it is down to having confidence in your own designs and finding and making the contacts with the right people yourself rather then relying on luck and waiting for it to just happen, because things never just happen. Try not to let rejection get to you or get despondent or discouraged by competition, not everyone is the same and there are always going to be people that don’t like what you're doing. Just stay focused on what you want and your own goals.

Where can we get further information/buy your designs? For further information you can visit the website www.lalaloula.com, find us on facebook or for more general enquiries contact epennydesigns@hotmail.co.uk You can buy online via our website or you can buy from one of our stockists which are listed on the website. Oxford stockists are: Liscious, Walton Street in Jericho or Liscious South Parade, Summertown.

Now don’t hate me, but this week I’ve made my first Autumn/Winter purchases. While most of you probably haven’t even given your new bikini an airing I’m dreaming of boots, jumpers and tights and sweating in changing room as I squeeze myself into this seasons pencil skirt.

I’ve never been a sales kind of a girl, rummaging and me just don’t go together. All those lust worthy pieces, once immaculately displayed and oh so desirable, now squashed and trailing half off the hanger. You wouldn’t be surprised if you knew me, I have to self-medicate with wine before I even think about going into Primark. Trouble is I’m not rich (although I think I’d be very good at it) my finances definitely don’t match my fashion aspirations and have suffered from my sale allergy.

So time to think smart, this year I am determined to plan ahead so that I don’t end up with the usual miss match of clothes that I have been drawn to (like a magpie) but somehow just don’t go together.

I’ve been scouring fashion week photos and have come up with eight key pieces that I think every girl should have to take them into the autumn. As every fashionista worth her salt knows the pre-collections are usually the best and help identify the forthcoming trends for the season, so time to get shopping! I’d recommend browsing online, by the pool, mojito in hand, after all this is Britain, its only a matter of time before it rains!
