Ahead of today’s game with Watford, we sat down with manager Lee Sanders to preview the game.

We opened the campaign with a good win against Spurs - how pleased were you to seal those three points against strong side? It was always going to be a bit of an unknown against Spurs and they made the game very competitive and difficult for us in parts. But ultimately we picked up the three points with goals from Beth Hepple and Nicki Gears and that got us off to a great start.

We have to be better and fortunately we got back in to it just before half-time and came out the stronger side in the second half. We were putting Brighton under pressure up to the point where they had their goalkeeper sent off. Beth then scored to get us back on level terms after we worked really hard to get there. We had a great spell of play for ten minutes following the sending off but didn’t manage to capitalise on the advantage we were handed. Ultimately we were disappointed to concede the penalty and lose the game. It was a long journey back with nothing and there’s times where you just have to say we didn’t do enough. One thing that many have noticed this season is the depth of the squad, and that will surely be key moving forward? The depth of the squad is there for all to see. We’ve brought in some great players and retained most of the squad we had in the Spring Series. The strong and competitive squad we have comes with its own problems in terms of selections and getting people game time so they’re ready if called upon. We made some changes from the Spurs game, a game that we won, and as a manager youreflect on that and ask whether we should have made those changes. Those are the kind of things that keep me awake at night. However, it’s only the second game of the

How pleasing was it to see a large crowd and excellent atmosphere against Spurs? The atmosphere was excellent. A lot of credit has to go to the backroom staff for engaging so much with the Sister Clubs and it was fantastic to see all the local girls teams, and even some who had travelled from Cumbria, there cheering us on. We had a really healthy crowd and I can’t thank people enough for backing and supporting the girls! Finally, changes to the FA Women’s Super League have been announced. How will they affect the club? The changes mean that we’ll be doing everything we can to apply for a place in Tier 1. We’ve done a lot of hard work off the pitch to grow the crowd and winning Club of the Year is testament to that. We deliver a good Match Day Experience and have a competitive squad so we need to take the next step. We have excellent strength and conditioning and training facilities which will only improve with the new build at Maiden Castle. Fortunately we’re a very well-ran business and football club, but unfortunately we’re the only club in the league that don’t have the backing of a mens’ football club whether that be Football League or Premier League level. We have 90% of what is needed to move to a full-time model, but to move into Tier 1 the reality is that we probably have to raise £100,000 to £150,000 before we submit our application. We’re currently seeking new partnerships or to work with individuals who want to work with us in the long-term. If anyone is interested in working with us then please do contact us. Thank you as always for your tremdnous support, and I hope to see you back at New Ferens Park on 12th October when we welcome Sunderland Ladies. Lee Sanders

Manager Lee Sanders speaks to The Wildcat!

That was followed with defeat at Brighton. What was your verdict on that game? To be honest, I thought we weren’t great in the first half and that’s something we need to look at and work on. We were disappointed to concede the first two goals in the manner we did and collectively we need to improve moving forward. The positives are that we got two goals and back in the game, but ultimately we’re disappointed to not get at least a point.

Watford are today’s visitors - they’ll be keen to secure their first win of the season? I’m sure they will. Keith Boanas has worked wonders down there which probably began in the game against us in the Spring Series! They gave us a really tough day that day. We had Lauren Jordinson there last season and she really enjoyed her time there, especially after Keith came in. I have a lot of respect for him and the work he has down in England and abroad to further women’s football. He’s a nice guy, competitive and I’m sure he’ll have his team very well organised in how they go about things today.

FROM THE DUGOUT

I’d like to welcome Keith Boanas and all the players, staff and officials from Watford Ladies to New Ferens Park this afternoon and I hope they have an enjoyable afternoon in the North East.

season and we have another 16 to play and we look ahead to today’s game against Watford. We’ll look to pick ourselves up and get those three points.

Good afternoon and welcome to today’s game against Watford Ladies. I’d like to wish a warm welcome to the players, staff and fans who have travelled to the North East from Watford today and of course welcome back to our own fans! I hope you all enjoy the game.

Sarah Wilson gives her viewso on today’s game!

THE SKIPPER

It was really important to get off the mark with a win a fortnight ago. It was a tough game against Spurs. They came out and attacked us from the off and they will do well this season. Of course we’ll be looking to make New Ferens Park a fortress this season. Playing at home you want to set the pace for the game and you want teams to fear coming to play you. It’s important that we pick up as many points at home as possible. We were really disappointed after the defeat against Brighton last weekend. We have to learn to start better. We gave ourselves a mountain to climb going 2-0 down. We showed great character to get back into the game and it was one of those games where nothing would fall for us. The missed

chances played a huge role. There are plenty of positives to take from that game though. We played good football and we pressed from the front which is important. We created the chances, but we just need to focus on taking them. It is very important we bounce back today - that feeling we felt after the final whistle is one you don’t want to feel again. We will use that as motivation. It was a cruel defeat last week. We’re expecting a tough challenge against Watford. They’ve made some good signings, and since they’ve had their new manager, Keith Boanas, in place they’ve been playing good football and doing well. The fans at our first home game of the season were incredible. It was also great to see such a good turn out from the Sister Clubs and it gives us a huge boost knowing we have that support!

The Golden Girls finished bottom of the FA WSL 2 season in 2016 but improved on that in the FA WSL 2 Spring Series, with an eighth-place finish, registering two wins from nine. Keith Boanas took the reins at the club in February, at the start of the Spring Series, and the competition helped him incorporate a number of new signings into the squad. Looking back on the Spring Series and the summer, captain Anneka Nuttall made clear the work that’s gone in ahead of the new season. “The summer’s been good, very, very positive,” said the Watford captain. “A lot of things have changed within the summer for us as a club. “We actually had a pre, pre-season, so we had three weeks off and then we were back at it straight away. “The Spring Series was all about finding our

feet as a new team, it really was, we had a lot of players who’d never, ever played, and we’re still gelling now, we’re still getting used to each other. “I’m very, very excited about it [the new season], we’ve got lots of new players and more backing from the club, we’ve got a great manager to go alongside that. “Our target is to finish top three. I strongly believe we will finish in the top three this season. “We’ve had a lot of pre-season friendlies, against some very good opponents, and we performed brilliantly against them, so it sets us in good stead for the season ahead. “We know where we want to go and we will reach where we want to go. I would throw us up there in the top three but it’s a tough league to judge this year.” Interview: fawsl.com

The Wildcats welcomed Tottenham Hotspur Ladies to New Ferens Park in the opening game of the 2017/18 season. Newly-promoted Spurs were looking to prove their point in the FA WSL while Durham were hoping to start the campaign positively.

MATCH RECAP

We look back at our victory over Tottenham Hotspur Ladies!

It was Spurs who began brightly, with Sarah Wiltshire firing wide and Jenna Schillaci testing stopper Helen Alderson with a dipping free-kick.Wiltshire had an even better chance moments later as she was played in by Baptiste, only for her eventual effort to lack power. There were to be no more near-misses, however, as the Wildcats took the lead with their next attack. A drilled cross was held up by Zoe Ness who eventually forced the ball to Beth Hepple who fired past the helpless Toni-Anne Wayne from 18 yards out.

Durham’s celebrations had barely stopped when Bianca Baptiste pulled Spurs level - the tricky forward going on a fine solo run before cutting inside and curling an effort past the dive of Alderson.

An exciting spell was then to be topped off when the Wildcats seized the initiative once again only two minutes later as Nicki Gears slotted home from inside the box after Roberts teed her up.

Alderson had to be alert late on to tip a long range effort from Hannah MacKenzie over the bar, but the Wildcats were able to see out the dying minutes and claim a hard-fought victory. FT: Durham 2-1 Spurs

Q: If you could be any flavour of ice cream, which would it be and why?

A: Definitely mint with chocolate chip. I love mint and it’s putting two flavours together, so why not!

32

Q: If you could trade lives with anybody for a day, who would it be and why?

A: I think I would trade it for a football manager just to see what it was like day-to-day. I’m a Manchester City supporter so I’ll go with Pep Guardiola.

13

Q: Are you a morning or a night person?

A: Definitely night. Any university work I have gets done past 6pm so definitely a night person!

Q: Do you have a song that reminds you of football, and if so what is it?

A: Good question! I don’t know if I do. I always have a game day playlist with anything that’s upbeat and relevant to get me in the mood. So maybe I’d say that genre of house music!

56

Q: If you could be any nationality what would it be and why?

A: Spanish. I really really like the accent!

90

Q: What’s your least favourite type of music?

A: Opera, because a lot of it isn’t in English and I don’t understand it!

99

Q: If you could teleport anywhere, where would you go and why?

A: I’d teleport to space because I’d like to say I’ve been there - not many people can. I’d like to shower in space too. That’s pretty cool!

Q: What was your favourite TV show growing up?

A: Are we going really young? I loved Zach and Cody and pretty much anything on the Disney Channel!

50

Q: How long does it take you to get ready in the morning?

A: If we’re talking everything from showering to doing my hair and makeup then probably about 40 minutes.

From the back of the stand!

JOHN MIDDLETON

Greetings from the back of the stand! The beginning of yet another exciting and important week in the life of Durham WFC! The visit of Watford presents a big challenge but a chance to get last week’s late unfortunately loss at Brighton. Grace McCatty and I were following events unfold via Twitter as we prepared for the visit of Liverpool to St James’ Park - a fantastic fightback which showed great character, just unlucky at the end. Social Media is bringing great dividends for followers of WSL2, as we discovered last time out here at NFP; we had great communication with Spurs fans after their defeat. It continues to bring supporters closer to games they wouldn’t otherwise be able to follow. DHR is proud that it is able to help fans of Durham and their opposition to keep tabs on the game - please spread the word - at the Spurs game we discovered some young male fans who had listened to our coverage of “The Spring Series” and had decided to come and support The Wildcats. The Power of Radio!

As we’ve seen in the last two games, it sometimes only takes a certain couple of minutes to decide a game. I doubt we’ll get a repeat of the “3 minutes of madness” we saw against Spurs today but it may take something special to find the difference between the two teams. Watford always prove tough opponents, they may well not have any points yet but it would be dangerous to underestimate them. Following today’s game there’s a quick turnaround before Thursday’s local derby which may lead to more coverage. We always seem to be able to judge Durham’s progress by the meetings of the two clubs each season. It promises to be an even closer encounter than ever before! We’ll be back again on Thursday with more coverage. Please let us know you are listening, inside or outside the ground, via our website www.dhradio.org.uk Enjoy the game and let’s hear the Wildcat roar! John Middleton @JADMiddy
