Welcome back to New Ferens Park for what’s sure to be an entertaining game against Sheffield this afternoon. A warm welcome to Helen, Matt and all the players, staff and officials from Sheffield FC here today. It’s been a dramatic start to the season with that hard-fought win over Millwall followed up by a thoroughly entertaining encounter against Everton in the FA Cup. While that game ended in defeat, it was a great game for the neutral and will hopefully encourage plenty of fans to come back for more! Let’s hope for a similarly entertaining contest this afternoon against a very good Sheffield side, albeit with a better ending! We have five teams as mascots and ball girls this afternoon - Washington AFC Wildcats U12, Durham United Leopards, Easington Colliery U10, Bedale JFC U11s and Consett Chargers. We hope they all have a great afternoon with us! Mark Donnelly Programme Editor

FROM THE DUGOUT

LEE SANDERS Good afternoon and welcome to New Ferens Park for what is sure to be an entertaining game. A warm welcome to Zoe, Helen and all of the staff, players and officials from Sheffield FC Ladies here today. It’s always good to start any season with a win and a positive result, which we got against Millwall. It was a tough game and they made us work for it. We were resillient and kept a clean sheet meaning we got the three points. I don’t think we can say anything other than we were disappointed with the Everton result, because the players gave everything for 120 minutes. Penalties is a cruel way to lose, but as a game of football it was great for the spectators to watch. It was probably the best 45 minutes of football we’ve produced in the first half and had it not been for some good defending from Everton we could have gone in four or five up at the break. 2-0 is always a precarious scoreline to have and we conceded a disappointing goal just after the break and that let Everton back in it. We were defending the whole time after that, but credit to the players for the first 45 minutes because they were outstanding. Even after Everton came back we kept the score the same and unfortunately lost out on penalties. There are lots of positives to take so far this season. I think against Keynsham in the FA Cup we showed that we’re in the division we deserve

to be in and we’ve solidified our place in the FA WSL. Against Millwall we showed that we want to do as well as anyone in that league and we should be considering ourselves as one of the top sides in our division if we’re being honest. The game against Everton then showed we can compete against those other top sides. Sheffield will be a very, very tough game - physically and mentally for the players. We played them three times last year and beat them twice in the league while they beat us in the cup. They’ve improved, got used to the WSL and were one of the top sides in the second half of the season. They’ve brought in some new players and will be a challenge, but they’ll find us a challenge too. We’ve obviously welcomed Rachael Laws to the club since our last programme. Everything happened very quickly after the situation with Helen Alderson changed and developed, meaning we had to act quickly. We were speaking to a couple of goalkeepers at the time but then

the opportunity to sign Rachael came up, and I think everyone would agree it didn’t take much deciding to sign a goalkeeper of that quality. She’s in and around the England squad and has won FA WSL 1 and FA WSL 2 so we were extremely pleased to bring a goalkeeper of her calibre in. As I always say, we need the fans to get behind the players and be more vocal. Get behind the team - whether they’re winning or losing please support them. The weather hasn’t been great for the last two games but the weather will get finer and hopefully we can always put on a good performance - whatever the weather! We beat Millwall and even in the Everton game it was entertaining to watch, so hopefully more people come along. Thanks for attending today, and I hope to see you back here when we welcome Oxford United on 2nd April. Lee Sanders

SARAH WILSON

Welcome back to New Ferens Park for our second game of the FA WSL Spring Series, as we prepare to welcome Sheffield FC Ladies! It was great to start off the Spring Series with a win against Millwall a fortnight ago. It’s always a very tough game against them so we knew it was going to be tight. We were delighted to come away with the win. It was pleasing to see us grind out those three points. We played some good football and deserved to win the game. We did make it difficult towards the end, but we ground out a really important first win. Everton in the FA Cup then

followed, and there are so many positives to take away from that game. The first half performance was up there with the best football we’ve ever played. We gave away two cheap goals which found us level. It wasn’t our day in the end, and on a personal note coming away from that game with nothing was really hard to take. But we got straight back to work in training through the week and put the game behind us. Today we’re expecting a battle, Sheffield are a very strong team. They have players in there with lots of experience. Every game we’ve played in the past has always been tight. They have made some quality additions, as have we. It’s really important that we take our chances as it’s these type of games when you don’t get many.

Overall, I think we’ve started the season very well. Last week against Everton we set our standards. We know that we can compete against the best teams in the league. We have to believe in ourselves that we can do it, and we can’t afford to lose focus. There are no easy games in this league, we have to respect who we’re facing each week. At the minute you can’t call any results so it’s important that we keep working hard in training to make sure we get things right on game day. Thanks as always for your fantastic support! Sarah Wilson

INTRODUCING OUR VISITORS

SHEFFIELD FC LADIES Sheffield FC Ladies was formed in 2003 when previous team Norton Ladies affiliated with the oldest football club in the world, Sheffield FC. The Club started life in Division 1 East of the Yorkshire & Humberside Regional WFL, the bottom level of the women’s pyramid of football at the time which became the North East Regional WFL in 2005/06. Sheffield’s debut season at FA Women’s Premier League level could hardly have gone much better as Sheffield finished the year as Northern Division runners up behind eventual champions Manchester City. The team picked up silverware for the third season running, courtesy of a very first win in the Sheffield & Hallamshire Women’s Challenge Cup. Sheffield went one better in the league in 2012/13 as they lifted the FA WPL Northern Division title for the very first time. Sheffield were front runners from the start of the season, losing just one league match in total, and finishing nine points clear of Nottingham Forest. They also repeated their success in the S&H Women’s Challenge Cup, beating Rotherham United 6-0 in the final. With promotion to the FA Women’s Super League not possible, Sheffield were forced to defend their FA WPL Northern Division crown in 2013/14, which they managed to do with five matches to go, ultimately finishing 15 points clear of runners up Preston North End. They added a third successive S&H Women’s Challenge Cup, but the highlight of the season was undoubtedly winning the FA Women’s Premier League Cup by beating Cardiff City 6-2 in the final, crowning off an historic treble trophy winning season. In 2014/15, the first team missed out on a second successive FA WPL Cup losing on penalties in the final to Charlton Athletic after a 0-0 draw, but the reserve team picked up silverware for the first time by winning the FA WPL Reserve Cup. The Sheffield & Hallamshire Women’s Challenge Cup was won for a fourth year running, and the Club enjoyed a best ever run in the FA Women’s Cup by reaching the Fifth Round. In the league, Sheffield FC won a third successive FA WPL Northern Division title, to secure a place in a first ever Championship Play Off Final. An injury time winner in a pulsating match against Portsmouth ensured Sheffield were crowned national champions of the FA WPL, and in so doing became the first club to gain promotion on merit to the top flight of the game: the FA Women’s Super League.

HEPPLE SALICKI HINNIGAN MAGILL

DURHAM: Alderson; Johnson, Wilson, Salicki, Christon; McFadden, Lee, Hepple; Dodds, Roberts, Ness Sunday 19th February 2pm SSE Women’s FA Cup Fourth Round New Ferens Park

Durham Women FC are out of the SSE Women’s FA Cup after a heartbreaking penalty shootout defeat against Everton Ladies. The Wildcats led 2-0 at the break after Beth Hepple and Becky Salicki netted in quick succession, before a fired up Everton came out after the break and levelled through Michelle Hinnigan and Simone Magill. An extra thirty minutes of football couldn’t separate the sides and the game went to penalties, with Everton triumphing 4-3. Lee Sanders made two changes to the side that beat Millwall Lionesses in the opening FA WSL Spring Series game as Annabel Johnson and Tyler Dodds came into the side. And Durham started brightly with Rachel Lee firing wide from distance before Sarah McFadden saw a header hacked off the line. The hosts continued to push forward and it looked as if Salicki had broken the deadlock only for her firm header to be cleared off the line. But this was only a brief reprieve for Everton, as Durham took the lead only four minutes later. After a well-worked move, the ball fell to Hepple who smashed the ball over Levell from 20 yards out. Johnson could have doubled the lead moments later, but saw her close range effort tipped around the post by Levell. There was to be a second though, and it came on the stroke of half-time as Salicki rose highest to power home a header at the far post after Hepple’s free-kick. Having not threatened much in the first half, the visitors levelled five minutes after the restart as the Wildcats failed to clear a corner with Hinnigan’s shot somehow finding its way into the bottom corner. This began a spell of pressure from Everton with Hinnigan seeing an effort held by Alderson before, in a rare attack, Zoe Ness fired just wide of the near post for the hosts. Everton did find an equaliser with just over ten minutes remaining - Magill heading home from a corner to complete the comeback. Magill’s goal sent the tie to extra-time, with chances few and far between in the extra 30 minutes. Georgia Brougham spurred Everton’s best chance as she headed over from close range before Durham’s Emily Roberts saw a shot saved by makeshift stopper Danielle Turner - the left-back stepping into goal after a first half injury to Kirstie Levell. With no goals in extra time, the tie went to penalties with Durham getting off to the ideal start - Helen Alderson saving from Michelle Hinnigan to hand them the initiative. But misses from Jen Jennings and Sarah Wilson saw Everton claim victory, meaning a cruel end for the Wildcats.

GETTING TO KNOW YOU

BETH HEPPLE In our new programme feature, we get to know the people behind the players by asking them some fun questions! Up next is England U20 international, Beth Hepple... Talk us through your footballing debut. My debut for Durham at senior level would have been in the Northern Combination league - I think it might have been against Huddersfield? The first WSL game was against Sunderland, though. We got beat 4-2. What do you do on a long away trip? Spend a lot of quality time with the other girls! It’s a good social opportunity to spend time with everyone else. We play a bit of music and just chat. What’s the best live concert you’ve ever been to? Beyonce. Hands down. It has to be. If you’re going to treat yourself to a takeaway, what do you have? I do love a good pizza, so probably a Dominos. What’s the best place you’ve ever been on holiday? Probably New York, I loved it there.

Who’s the best player you’ve played with? I’ve never actually thought about this! Probably Sarah McFadden because she’s so strong and can control and change a game.

Where in the world haven’t you been, but would like to go? I’ve been to America loads of times, but I’d love to do a tour across it and visit loads of places that you wouldn’t usually go to.

Who’s the funniest person in the squad? Apart from me obviously, Aldo (Helen Alderson) has her moments. Everyone laughs at her!

What’s your favourtie film? For a comedy, it has to be Bridesmaids because I literally know every word in that film! Maybe Matilda or something, I love that.

You’re trapped on a dessert island and can take only three items - what would you take and why? A football so I can play a bit, my phone and probably my hair brush.

What’s your favourite song of all time? Probably Beyonce - Crazy in Love. Who would you trust with a secret in the dressing room? Probably Wills (Sarah Wilson) - I could tell her something What’s the best ground you’ve ever played at? Manchester City’s ground. Donny’s is quite good as well, but Man City is just incredible.

What three words would you use to describe yourself? Competitive, relaxed and driven. What three words would you use to describe Lee Sanders? Firm, dedicated and driven.

SUPPORT SHORTY!

LEE IN ICELAND

Midfielder Rachel Lee (Shorty) is fundraising for the Brain Research Trust by running the Reykjavik half marathon in Iceland on April 22nd. Rachel is running on behalf of The Brain Research Trust, who fund research into treatment for conditions such as; Alzheimer’s Disease, Stroke, Epilepsy, Parkinson’s Disease and Motor Neurone Disease. We asked Rachel a few questions about her upcoming challenge... Are you looking forward to the event? Yeah, it’s my first international half marathon so it’s exciting and a good opportunity. It is hard work leading up to and training for the event but it will be worthwhile on

the day. I’m a little worried about how cold it will be though! Why have you chosen the Brain Research Trust? The BRT are a brilliant charity who support research into many different brain and nervous system conditions which affect so many people. They look at developing treatment and ultimately finding cures for the conditions mentioned above. I am fundraising and running on behalf of my friend Taylor, who is currently living with Motor Neurone Disease, so I like to try and raise the profile of the Brain Research Trust and particularly MNDA on his behalf. He continues to be a total inspiration to myself and so many others, so he is my reason for running.

What time are you aiming for? Anything under 2 hours! Hopefully around the 1 hour 50 mark but I will honestly just be happy to complete it and hopefully raise the profile and some money for the BRT along the way. So if you can’t think of anything worse than running for 2 hours solid hopefully you can support and sponsor me instead. If you would like to sponsor Rachel or wish her well you can visit her fundraising page or her Twitter using the details below! Good luck Shorty! THE PRESS BOX

Greetings from the back of the stand! Two weeks ago we saw a great advert for the game we love, full of exciting twists and turns but, unfortunately, not the end result we wanted. I was very glad of the company of Grace McCatty who gave expert insight into all aspects on show – we were both exhausted by the end! I must thank Grace for her help; thankfully it wasn’t as cold as the week before! After the disappointment of the Cup exit, I know the team will bounce straight

back but there is yet another difficult test ahead; we know from our meetings last season that Sheffield will be no pushovers. We have another fantastic match in prospect! This Spring Season is panning out as an interesting exercise – teams are experimenting with players and tactics – but a very fruitful one; crowds are continuing to grow and games continue to entertain. All bodes well for the future! We hope you can join us via www.dhradio.org.uk on your Smartphone (click on

the “Listen Live” button); we’ve had listeners across the globe in recent weeks, including a certain Andy Thorpe who woke up his hotel celebrating Beth Hepple’s wonder goal last week! Let us know you’re listening via the usual channels and, please, spread the word! Enjoy the game, and let’s hear the Wildcat roar! John @JADMiddy
