Welcome back to New Ferens Park as we host London Bees! Today is a huge day for the club as we become the first FA WSL 2 club to live stream a game via Facebook. It’s a very exciting time for us and we’re delighted to be able to offer the service to our fans and the wider women’s football community! It’s only been a week since our last home game which saw us put in one of our best performances of the season against Brighton & Hove Albion. It was great to see the skipper, Sarah Wilson, find the back of the net and it kept up our 100% home record during the Spring Series, which is a phenomenal achievement. In today’s programme, we have a detailed look back at that win over the Seagulls while we also get the thoughts of Lee Sanders and Sarah Wilson and take a look at London Bees. Enjoy the game - and the read! Mark Donnelly Programme Editor

FROM THE DUGOUT

LEE SANDERS Good afternoon and welcome to New Ferens Park for what is sure to be an entertaining game. A warm welcome to Dave, Steve and all of the staff, players and officials from London Bees here today. How pleased were you with that win over Brighton in our last home game? I was really pleased to get the three points. If you look at the game overall we more than deserved to take all three points. We were dominant in the game from start to finish in all areas and if the score had been more it would not have been unfair on Brighton becasue we controlled the game that much. It must have been pleasing to see your captain, Sarah Wilson, find the net in that game? I’m over the moon for Sarah getting a goal. You can see in the way she talks and plays that she has her heart on her sleeve. It’ll mean a lot to her getting the goal and a cleansheet too. She’s a good person to have around the club. That win kept us at the top of the league, and even though teams have games in hand, it must be pleasing to be up there? I think a lot of people would rather be in the position we’re in than their own. We’ve got three tough game coming up, starting with today against London Bees. What’s gone is gone and we can’t affect that but what we can affect is what we do for ninety minutes today. Today we welcome London Bees to New Ferens Park - what test are you expecting from them? We’ll expect a huge test. They’ve scored in every game they’ve played and they’re a compeltely different side to what they were. Credit to Dave and his staff, they’ve made a lot of good signings and have one of the most clinical strikers in our division in Jo Wilson. We’ll give them a lot of respect but

they have to come and break us down, and we’ll give them plenty to think about.

Facebook - an FA WSL 2 first - how pleased are you that we’re leading the way?

We had another big crowd last weekend as 551 attended. How good is it to see these numbers attending?

As a club we’ve been keen to do this for quite a while. We don’t feature as heavily as the WSL 1 clubs with live games and we have to innovate and push the barriers to what we can do as currently a second division club to get our games seen and expose the club to a wider audience. There’s been a lot of work put into this with Dawn (Hepple, Club Secretary) Mark (Donnelly, Marketing Officer), and the guys from Summit Sports Media with first finding the finance and then the technical side of things to make it all happen today.

The crowd last week was fantastic and getting those numbers is brilliant for everyone, including the players. I think a lot of credit has to go to everybody who runs the match days and the marketing side of the club. We really have to say a big thank you this year to the junior clubs who have got involved in everything that we have put on. The sponsors who get invovled too have made a big difference. Vision for Education help us hold schools tournaments and JW Wood provide support to make things like today’s grassroots tournament happen. A lot of work goes in by a lot of people over and above the playing side. This morning sees us host a grassroots tournament, and it must be pleasing to welcome these young players in? It’s great to see. It’s something that I have fond memories of thinking back to when we first started and you got to go to these girls tournaments. A lot of the time you had to travel away from the area so it’s nice to hold one here. It’s where a lot of good memories are made for young girls. Our game today is being broadcast live on

Today we say thank you to our volunteers do you have a message for them? The volunteers, and specifically those on game days, are invaluable to be honest. Big parts of the day wouldn’t operate without them and Dawn does a fantastic job managing the game day itself and helping the volunteers with the various jobs they do. They are, and always have been, a vital component of any football club and we can’t thank them enough. Thanks for attending today, and I hope to see you back here in the 2017/18 FA WSL season! Lee Sanders

THE SKIPPER

SARAH WILSON

Welcome back to New Ferens Park as we welcome London Bees! It was great to get back to winning ways against Brighton. After coming off the back of a cruel defeat away to Doncaster that win meant so much more. It feels great thinking back on my goal. As a defender my job is to defend, so to be able to help the team like that feels really good. We had lots of chances to put the game away, fortunately that one went in! It’s our main aim as a defensive unit to keep clean sheets. It’s really pleasing when we do that as we did in the Brighton game. We worked hard not just as a back five but as a team to defend that lead. We’re still unbeaten at New Ferens

Park and of course we would love to continue on with that home form and record. We have a lot to play for now and that would help what we are looking to achieve.

makes a huge difference knowing that we have fans returning week in week out to support us. There is lots of work going on in the background to grow these crowds, it’s good to see the hard work paying off.

We know that this game against London Bees is going to be a very tough test. They’ve had some good results, we know they can play and are a threat going forward. There’s nothing much in the league at the minute so it’s all to play for.

Finally, I’d like to say thank you to our volunteers for their work throughout the Spring Series. The volunteers are absolutely crucial to our club. They’re faces that have been around from the start and we wouldn’t be able to run without them. These guys show up, work incredibly hard to ensure everything runs smoothly and expect nothing in return - you can’t ask for anything more than that!

It’s good to see ourselves sitting at the top, however there is so much work to do. We have some big games coming up so it’s important to keep grounded and keep working hard. Our crowds have been growing and it’s fantastic to see how much support we have been getting. It

Thanks as always for your support! Sarah Wilson

INTRODUCING OUR VISITORS

Year Founded 2014

LONDON BEES

Manager David Edmondson

There were many ancestral spirits behind the newly-formed London Bees, but its earliest roots date back to a group of ladies working at Transport for London’s district line.

Captain Ashleigh Goddard

In the 1970s the women, looking for a team to play football, banded together and entered the Hounslow & District League – forming the platform for a remarkable rise.

2017 Top Scorer Ashleigh Goddard (4) Stadium The Hive Last Meeting LON 2-2 DUR Last Time Out AST 3-2 LON Honours FA Cup Runners-Up 1997

Named in honour of their workplace, District Line Ladies FC appeared in leagues across Greater London before tasting promotion to the Women’s FA National League Southern Division in the early 1990s. It did not take long afterwards before the squad merged with Wembley FC – becoming Wembley Ladies FC and reaching their zenith in an FA Cup final defeat to Millwall Lionesses in 1997. Meanwhile Barnet Ladies FC, established by Barnet director Graham Slyper in the mid-80s, had become officially affiliated with the men’s club. It prompted another merger in 1998 after Wembley’s FA Cup finalists began to leave the club, including teenager and eventual England legend Kelly Smith. Barnet FC Ladies have been a virtual mainstay in English football’s top tier ever since before London Bees, a brand new franchise, was welcomed into the Women’s Super League fold for 2014.

WILSON

DURHAM: Laws; Johnson, Wilson, Salicki, Christon; Gibson, Dixon, Hepple; Gears, Roberts, Ness Sunday 23rd April 12pm FA WSL 2 Spring Series New Ferens Park, Durham Attendance: 551

Sarah Wilson’s first half header saw Durham Women get back to winning ways against Brighton. Wilson headed home from Beth Hepple’s 18th minute corner to hand the Wildcats victory after a dominant performance. Lee Sanders made three changes to the side that narrowly lost out to Doncaster Rovers Belles as Nicki Gears, Nicola Gibson and Caroline Dixon all started. And the hosts started brightly, with Gears denied by Emma Byrne early on before Dixon flashed a volley narrowly wide of the far post. The hosts’ early dominance paid dividends when Wilson opened the scoring, meeting Hepple’s delivery with a bullet header which left Byrne powerless. Chances continued to come for Durham with Zoe Ness seeing an effort well-saved and Gibson and Gears both seeing shots blocked. Katie Natkiel had Brighton’s only real chance of the first half, as she drilled wide after being teed up by Alessia Russo. Durham continued to press forward after the break and could have had a second when Hepple struck the crossbar from Ness’ teasing cross. Ness herself then curled an effort narrowly over the bar before Emily Roberts saw a drilled effort held by the opposition stopper. Roberts threatened again moments later after swapping passes with Hepple, only to shoot straight at Byrne. Substitute Tyler Dodds had a glorious chance to extend the lead when she got onto the end of a deep Wilson free-kick, but saw her effort fly narrowly over the bar. Brighton pushed forward in the final stages but struggled to test Rachael Laws, with the Wildcats seeing out the final minutes to wrap up a well-deserved victory.

SUPPORT SHORTY! We've got your staff LEE IN ICELAND training and apprenticeship delivery covered

Midfielder Rachel Lee (Shorty) is fundraising for the Brain Research Trust by running the Reykjavik half marathon in Iceland on April 22nd. Rachel is running on behalf of The Brain Research Trust, who fund research into treatment for conditions such as; Alzheimer’s Disease, Stroke, Epilepsy, Parkinson’s Disease and Motor Neurone Disease. We asked Rachel a few questions about her upcoming challenge... Are you looking forward to the event? Yeah, it’s my first international half marathon so it’s exciting and a good opportunity. It is hard work leading up to and training for the event but it will be worthwhile on

the day. I’m a little worried about how cold it will be though! Why have you chosen the Brain Research Trust? The BRT are a brilliant charity who support research into many different brain and nervous system conditions which affect so many people. They look at developing treatment and ultimately finding cures for the conditions mentioned above. I am fundraising and running on behalf of my friend Taylor, who is currently living with Motor Neurone Disease, so I like to try and raise the profile of the Brain Research Trust and particularly MNDA on his behalf. He continues to be a total inspiration to myself and so many others, so he is my reason for running.

What time are you aiming for? Anything under 2 hours! Hopefully around the 1 hour 50 mark but I will honestly just be happy to complete it and hopefully raise the profile and some money for the BRT along the way. So if you can’t think of anything worse than running for 2 hours solid hopefully you can support and sponsor me instead. If you would like to sponsor Rachel or wish her well you can visit her fundraising page or her Twitter using the details below! Good luck Shorty!
