Ahead of today’s game with Liverpool, we sat down with manager Lee Sanders to preview the game.

Our last home game saw a 0-0 draw with Sunderland and you must have been pleased with the performance? I thought the players gave a good account of themselves against Sunderland and it shows that the gap is narrowing and we’re competing at a similar level now. Both sides had chances in the game but I think we had the better of them and certainly could have won it late in the second half, but Rachael Laws had an excellent game and kept Sunderland in it.

That was followed with a 4-0 win at Sheffield - just how good of a result was that? Sheffield is always a tough place to go and they’re a difficult team to play home or away. We expected nothing but the same this time, but the players put in a very good performance. We were defensively solid and caused them a lot of problems going forward. When you consider we probably had 70% possession and hit the woodwork three times we were disappointed to come in at 0-0 at half-time. But we kept up the performance in the second half which was pleasing, because although we played well in the first half there wasn’t an end product. There’s then always a fear that in the second half we might not play as well, but we did. We arguably played better after the break and added the finishes to our good play. I’m really pleased for the girls who came in and started and those who scored the goals. Overall it was a really good team performance. One thing that has been worked on is being more clinical in front of goal, so how pleased are you with eight goals in the last two league games? We’re a team that has always created a lot

Something else that must be pleasing is that those eight goals have come from seven different scorers - how important is that? It’s hugely important. I’ve never been a great believer in just having one goalscorer in a team and the focus being just on them. I’ve always wanted to develop teams where there are five or six potential threats going forward and a couple who can contribute from set pieces. For me that will always give the opposition something to think about and cause them problems. Liverpool are today’s visitors to New Ferens Park - what are you expecting from them? We’ll be expecting to see quality. They’ve got one of England’s best goalkeepers in Siobhan Chamberlain and some real quality at the back in Gemma Bonner. You then look at Natasha Harding, Jess Clarke, Caroline Weir and even some of the players who have come through their Development Squad like Ashley Hodson - they’re all quality players. But that’s what we’re here for. Everybody should want to play against better teams and players and it gives the players a real chance to test themselves that bit more. We’ll go in to the game respecting Liverpool but we can’t fear them. It’s a pleasure to play against such a team and we need to enjoy the occassion, but also go out with determination and a focus on winning to try and pick up some points in the cup. Thank you as always for your tremdnous support, and I hope to see you back at New Ferens Park on 12th Novemver when we welcome London Bees. Lee Sanders

Manager Lee Sanders speaks to The Wildcat!

We then went to penalties which is always a lottery but we have to be pleased with drawing the game and earning a point. We now just have to see what happens against Sheffield and today against Liverpool.

But we also have to make the chances count in every game, and make sure we carry this on through the season.

FROMTHE DUGOUT

I’d like to welcome Scott Rodgers and all the players, staff and officials from Liverpool Ladies to New Ferens Park this afternoon and I hope they have an enjoyable afternoon in the North East.

of chances and we still are, and of course we’re pleased that we’re getting those goals. You can’t not be pleased with eight goals and two clean sheets from the last two games!

Good afternoon and welcome to today’s game against Liverpool Ladies. I’d like to wish a warm welcome to the players, staff and fans who have travelled to the North East from Liverpool today - and of course welcome back to our own fans! I hope you all enjoy the game.

Sarah Wilson gives her viewso on today’s game!

THE SKIPPER

IWe were really pleased with our performance in our last home game against Sunderland. I think it’s fair to say we created the better chances. It was unfortunate to lose out on a bonus point on penalties but we gained a really valuable point. That game showed how much passion we have as a team. We worked hard, played some really good football against top opposition and proved to ourselves what we can achieve. We know there is a gap between the leagues but he showed on the night what we’re capable of. It was a fantastic win against Sheffield last time out. We created lots of chances. We were frustrated not to go in at half team in front, but we were clinical in the second half. We earned the clean sheet as a team; it was a brilliant team

“It’s a fantastic opportunity to play against established internationals”

performance. It was really important to get three points on the road too. We need to pick up as many points away from home to ensure we stay in around the top. It’s good to know we don’t have to rely on one player to score the goals as we’ve shown in our last few games. I was really happy to see Nic Worthington score her first goal for the club against Sheffield, she was outstanding and deserved it. With her goal, along with the ones from the other girls, we had some really well worked team goals. Today is going to be a really tough test, it’s always difficult coming up against a Super League 1 team. They’ll be quick and strong so we know we’ll have to be up for it today. I’m absolutely positive the girls will give everything today. It’s a fantastic opportunity to play against established internationals, it’s good to test yourself against the best, it will provide us with good experience going back into our league fixtures.

DURHAM UNITED

In front of a packed out New Ferens Park, the Wildcats welcomed local rivals and top tier side Sunderland Ladies in what was the opening game of both teams’ FA WSL Continental Tyres Cup campaigns.

It took until 26 minutes for the real chance - Emily Roberts getting through on goal before being thwarted by Laws. Sunderland’s Keira Ramshaw then saw an effort cleared off the line by Sarah Wilson as the Black Cats ended the first half strongly.

In August this year, Durham United became the first club to partner up with the Wildcats as part of our FA WSL Sister Club Programme!

A LEAGUE OF OUR OWN

MEET OUR VISITORS LIVERPOOL LADIES

In 1989 Newton Ladies were formed and won the Lancashire International Tournament as well as reaching the Division One & Two Final. The year after they’re again defeated finalists but won the Red Star Tournament in Southampton.

In 2001 Liverpool Ladies were relegated from the Women’s Premier League. In 2002, the Northern Division One side secure their first shirt sponsorship deal with Manchester based BEP Screen Print.

They entered the first National League in 1991 under the name of Knowsley Women’s Football Club, finishing 4th and winning the Lancashire International Tournament again.

In 2004 they won the Northern Division and earned promotion, but did not stay long as they were relegated again at the end of the season, having won only two games.

Strengthened by England internationals they reached the League Cup Final in 1993 but lost to Arsenal.

Liverpool again won back promotion in the 2006–07 season as they ran out Northern Division champions.

They also lost the 1994 Women’s FA Cup Final, 1-0 to Doncaster Belles, before finishing third in the league.

The Reds survived their first season back in the FA Women’s Premier League National Division, finishing third bottom only to get relegated into the Northern Division for 2009–10.

In 1995 they become Liverpool FC Ladies and again reach the Women’s FA Cup Final, narrowly losing out to Arsenal in a five goal thriller. They finished runners up in the league, before again losing the Women’s FA Cup Final the following season, this time to Croydon on penalties. After discussions at Anfield in the summer of 1999, a scheme including Liverpool Fed Juniors is developed to help with youth development.

The following year Liverpool won the Northern Division losing just one game all season as well as winning the FA Fair Play Award after playing for the whole season without having a single player booked or sent-off. Liverpool Ladies are a founder member of the FA Women’s Super League which began in April 2011 In 2013 Liverpool Ladies became fully integrated into Liverpool Football Club.

After a promising runout in the FA WSL Continental Tyres Cup against top tier Sunderland, Durham were keen to carry the positives into the trip to Dronfield where we faced a Sheffield FC side who were high on confidence and unbeaten at home this season.

We look back at our victory over Sheffield FC Ladies!

MATCH RECAP

With just six minutes on the clock the woodwork was rattled twice in quick succession - first Ness saw her shot cannon back off the bar before Worthington’s mis-kick fell perfectly for Cottam who was again denied by the frame of the goal as the first half ended goalless. But only two minutes after the break the Wildcats had the lead their play deserved as Nicola Worthington reacted quickest to poke home from close range after Ness saw an effort parried by the impressive Danielle Gibbons.

And it was two moments later, as Rachel Lee’s fine through ball set Abi Cottam free and she kept her composure to slot past Gibbons after bursting past Ellie Gilliatt.

The Wildcats then added a third when a neat free-kick routine saw Emily Roberts afforded the space to cross and Rachel Lee’s neat movement allowed her to side-foot into the roof of the net.

A fourth then came when substitute Jordan Atkinson tapped in at the far post following some good work from the lively Ness as the Wildcats topped off a complete away performance. FT: Sheffield 0-4 Durham

From the back of the stand!

JOHN MIDDLETON

Greetings from the back of the stand! And congratulations on getting a programme for what I expect will be another bumper crowd meaning they will sell-out. Another Cup game, the third in the series, and what a Cup game! Having welcomed our neighbours in the last home Cup game and holding our own against them, today’s opponents will hold some fear but perhaps not as much as before. A good draw with their keeper making the difference in the result (in normal time as well as the penalties) showed just how far this team has come and was a good marker for the future.

with no replay to rise up to second in the table cannot be under estimated. I’m sure Lee Sanders and all the staff will have the team well prepared and with their feet firmly on the ground. As usual we will be providing live commentary to you inside and outside the ground via www.dhradio.org.uk (click on the “Listen Live” button) and hope that we continue to grow in listenership just like the crowds in NFP do. We’ve been lucky enough to have Grace McCatty join us, giving expert insight and analysis, while she’s recovering from injury; only sometimes embarrassing her! It’s good to hear she’s back on her feet and will be back on the field soon.

Liverpool, of course, are a fantastic side, full of internationals, and beat our neighbours down the road quite convincingly last week; but this is a Cup-tie and anything can happen!

Enjoy the game and let’s hear the Wildcat roar!

Confidence should be high (no matter what happened in the second game against Sheffield, after this was composed) especially after such a fantastic display last Sunday. Going down to such a tough place to play, creating so many chances and scoring four
