Welcome back to New Ferens Park as we prepare to welcome Brighton & Hove Albion! I hope you’ve all had time to recover from the excitement of our last game here? The late winner from Zoe Ness was certainly a fantastic moment, and it was great to have a big crowd in the ground to cheer us on! It was disappointing to lose out to Doncaster Belles in our last outing, but it was a fantastic performance from the lasses against a full-time professional side who will be challenging for the title. Hopefully fans enjoyed our GoalCam footage from that game! In today’s programme we get to know Zoe Ness a little better, find out all about our visitors and get some details on the trials for our FA Girls’ Regional Talent Club! Enjoy the game - and the read! FROM THE DUGOUT

LEE SANDERS Good afternoon and welcome to New Ferens Park for what is sure to be an entertaining game. A warm welcome to George, Kirsty and all of the staff, players and officials from Brighton & Hove Albion Women here today. How pleased were you with that hard-fought 2-1 win over Oxford in our last home game? It was very pleasing and it does show good character in the team when they can dig in and come from behind, especially after going behind so early in the second half. We bounced back fairly quickly and got the equaliser before a well-worked move for the winner. I thought that, although Oxford did cause us some problems, we did deal with them well and came away as justifiable winners. Our home form has been very impressive this season and crowds are increasing too, and that must be good to see? The home crowds are increasing which is great for the club and players. It’s a good place to be whereas in the first season we struggled a bit at home, perhaps because it was new to the players, but now we thrive at home. I think teams are worried to come to New Ferens Park. In our last game we lost out late on to Doncaster, and it must have been devestating to lose that late on? I was bitterly disappointed. That’s football and you’re absolutely ecstatic if you put one away in the dying minutes, but on the flip side if you concede late on you know it’s difficult to come back from. It rips the heart out of you and you feel bad for the players. It was an unusual goal for us to concede as we’re usually good from set pieces. Doncaster are the best team we’ve played so far this season, and they’re experienced and train full-time. Again I have to give credit to the players. We didn’t start the game well but we were the better side in the second half. We had opportunities ourselves just after Becky scored the goal - Emily Roberts went very close and just like the Oxford we showed some resilience to come back. We probably deserved a point but that’s football.

Today we host Brighton for the first time ever - what kind of test do you expect from them? We’ve never played Brighton before and I’m quite excited because I love playing new teams. I think the players should thrive and love playing against new opposition as it’s something different. You’re stepping into the unknown to a certain degree and we’ll respect Brighton as they got a good result against Watford who we know have improved massively this season. We’ll give them every respect they deserve but they have to come here and break us down and stop us from scoring. We’ll give them as much to think about as they give us. We held our annual Vision for Education tournament a fortnight ago - how did that go? It was a brilliant day. Vision for Education have been huge in supporting the club from day one and Liam Roberts, the CEO, is a local lad who has really got behind the club. It’s not just him, but all the staff who we work with in the local offices. They’ve all bought into the club and it’s great to get the schools down to these tournaments. We get to see some great young players and the teachers love it too. It’s an enjoyable day with a real festival atmosphere. We had Beth Hepple and Tyler Dodds at England U20 Camp recently and that must be great for the club? It’s great for them to go away to camp. They work hard for it and get to go a fantastic facility at St George’s Park and work under some excellent coaches. They played an in-house game against the Next Gen team and did well. They

don’t just get called up for the sake of it, they work hard and perform so we’re really pleased for them. The target is to get more players into the system. Our RTC Trials are coming up soon - what would you say to any parents thinking of signing their child up? We’ve already had a number of players interested in coming to trial in June and it’s something that, as a parent, if you think you’re daughter is talented enough we would encourage you to get in touch and come down and have a go. If you don’t give it a go you’ll never know. It could open up some doors for the players in the future. Our successful Holiday Camps ran again during the Easter Holidays - how did you feel they went? Our Holiday Camps were a little bit different this time - we usually get a lot more boys but it was all girls which was great to see. Our players did a fantastic job and we got some great feedback with a lot of people coming back after the first day because they enjoyed it that much. I can’t praise our girls enough for the job they did. It’s great for the youngsters because they get to be around FA WSL players socially which is a great experience. Thanks for attending today, and I hope to see you back here when we welcome London Bees next Sunday! Lee Sanders

THE SKIPPER

SARAH WILSON

Welcome back to New Ferens Park as we welcome Brighton! It was brilliant to get that win against Oxford in our last home game. We fell behind to a sloppy goal and we had been playing well but hadn’t took our chances. Credit to Oxford they pressed and caught us switched off, however that goal pushed us on, it was like we needed to concede to take our foot off. We drew level and then managed to nick one at the very end which was brilliant. Coming from behind like that shows how much determination we have as a squad. We had to fight for it, it wasn’t an easy task. It shows our togetherness and resilience. Our defeat against Doncaster proves how cruel football can be, I believe we were worthy of a draw. They had chances as did we. We battled to get back into the game and they caught

us sleeping in the last couple of minutes, we pushed on but left it too late to get back into it. Again credit to Doncaster, they proved their quality and took the chance when they got it. We did manage to compete with full time professionals and it’s rewarding to know that we can do that. We make the most of the resources we have. We work hard when we’re together, and the girls do a lot independently so that we can compete. I don’t believe that anyone would have known the difference between the two sides on Sunday. t’s fantastic to have Nicki Gears back in the squad. She’s like a new signing and we’re all really excited to see her back to full fitness. When Nicki gets going you can’t touch her, she’s strong, absolutely rapid and has a great engine. She’s worked incredibly hard over the past year to get to where she is now. Nicki is one of the

nicest people, a really good friend and deserves to be back in and around the squad. Today we’re expecting a very tough test against Brighton. They have made some very good signings and picked up some good previous results. The table is tight so that doesn’t mean anything. It is difficult to prepare for a game against a team that you know little about, however we’ve had a very good week of training and we won’t be underestimating anything. Brighton had a great season last year and deserve to be competing at WSL level. We are still in a good position. We have given ourself a big task over the coming weeks and we all know how important is it that we step up and make these games count. Sarah Wilson

INTRODUCING OUR VISITORS

BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION Brighton & Hove Albion gained promotion to WSL 2 by winning the Women’s Premier League and they will get a taste of what’s to come in the Spring Series. The Seagulls won the Women’s Premier League Southern Division before going on to beat Northern Division winners Sporting Club Albion 4-2 in the play-off final. The Sussex side lost just two games all season and striker Kate Natkiel, who scored twice on that decisive day, says it was special to finally realise their long-held aim of reaching the Women’s Super League. “It was amazing – we worked so hard for the whole season. The hours we put in and everything we did came to a head on that day in the final,” she said. “It was an amazing day – all the fans that were there made it for us. It’s always a nice little bonus to score a couple of goals myself as well! Promotion has been an aim for the club for a long time and they came close the year before when losing in the final. That’s what we were working for the whole season and we managed to do it.” Natkiel hopes Brighton can use the Spring Series as a chance to test out some new ideas and formations, and the striker believes it will give them a real insight into how tough the season is going to be. “I’m so happy that they’re doing a Spring Series which gives us a chance to get together again and play competitive matches,” she said. “We’ve never been in the WSL before so it gives us a real insight into what to expect against the other teams. It will allow us to get settled without any of the pressure of relegation or promotion. It just allows us to play.”

HEPPLE NESS NOBLE

DURHAM: Laws; Johnson, Wilson, Salicki, Christon; Gutteridge, Lee, Hepple; Atkinson, Roberts, Ness Sunday 2nd April 12pm FA WSL 2 Spring Series New Ferens Park, Durham Attendance: 507

Zoe Ness’ late winner saw the Wildcats retain their unbeaten start to the season thanks to victory over Oxford United Women. Ness slotted home three minutes from time to seal victory after Durham were forced to come from behind after Ellie Noble’s goal at the start of the second half. Beth Hepple levelled things up shortly after, before Ness then netted the winner. Lee Sanders made one change from the side that drew with Watford as Ellie Christon replaced Jen Jennings, while there was a welcome return for Nicki Gears on the bench after a long term injury. And Durham took the game to their visitors early on and had several half-chances with Sarah Wilson seeing a shot blocked before Nat Gutteridge poked wide from close range. Oxford were still threatening, however, and had arguably the best chance of the first half when Emily Donovan sprung the offside trap only to loft the ball well wide. Hepple then had a chance to give the hosts the lead but couldn’t get the ball out from under her feet after a fine through ball from Ness. Neither side could find a break through in the first half, but the U’s were ahead shortly after the restart as Noble took aim from distance and her shot found its way into the bottom corner. And the lead could have been doubled moments later were it not for Rachael Laws denying the lively Ini Umotong who had broken through on goal. This let-off seemed to spark Durham into life and they began to create chances again - Emily Roberts slotting wide after she had ran the length of the pitch before stopper Demi Lambourne did well to deny Hepple at her near post. But Hepple wasn’t to be denied again and netted the equaliser after 58 minutes as she slotted home from close range after a defensive mixup. Umotong then could have handed Oxford the lead with twenty minutes remaining with only heroic defending keeping the scores level. After the Nigerian saw her first shot saved by Laws, Becky Salicki did well to block Evie Gane’s follow-up on the line before Umotong then slotted wide with the goal at her mercy. That miss became significant in the 87th minute as Ness handed the Wildcats the lead, slotting home from 12 yards after a drilled cross from Emily Roberts. Durham saw out the final few minutes with minimal fuss to pick up another three points in the FA WSL Spring Series.

GETTING TO KNOW YOU

ZOE NESS In our new programme feature, we get to know the people behind the players by asking them some fun questions! Up next is striker Zoe Ness.... Talk us through your footballing debut. I can’t remember my Durham because we obviosuly progressed through different levels. I know my one for Scotland - it was down in Wales at Aberswyth. Lee, Dawn, my Mum and Dad came down to literally the middle of nowhere in Wales on a very cold night! What do you do on a long away trip? There’s always music going on in the car so it’s a proper singalong. Then it’s usually a Saturday night we travel so there’s something on TV and Match of the Day! What’s the best live concert you’ve ever been to? I went to a festival in Sweden last year. Obviously festivals like Reading and Leeds are in the middle of nowhere with camping but this one was in Stockholm City. They converted a sports arena and put the stands and stages up so that was pretty cool. If you’re going to treat yourself to a takeaway, what do you have? Indian, hands down. If you’re in Durham and want a good Indian go to Spice Lounge!

What’s the best ground you’ve ever played at? I played at Old Trafford with school so I’d have to say there. Who’s the best player you’ve played with? I’ve played with quite a few different people so I can’t pick just one!

What’s the best place you’ve ever been on holiday? The best football holiday I’ve been on was to Holland in 2008 or something, which was a good laugh. Then I’ve had some standard family holidays which have been good.

Who’s the funniest person in the squad? Meg Borthwick is probably up there, but everyone has a bit of banter about them which is good.

Where in the world haven’t you been, but would like to go? The list is endless, there’s a lot of places I want to go!

You’re trapped on a dessert island and can take only three items - what would you take? Food, food and more food probably!

What’s your favourtie film? I was speaking to someone about Goal today, it has to be that! What’s your favourite song of all time? There’s far too many! I can’t pick just one! Who would you trust with a secret in the dressing room? I don’t know!

What three words would you use to describe yourself? I can’t think of three! What three words would you use to describe Lee Sanders? Big old softy!

SUPPORT SHORTY! We've got your staff LEE IN ICELAND training and apprenticeship delivery covered

Midfielder Rachel Lee (Shorty) is fundraising for the Brain Research Trust by running the Reykjavik half marathon in Iceland on April 22nd. Rachel is running on behalf of The Brain Research Trust, who fund research into treatment for conditions such as; Alzheimer’s Disease, Stroke, Epilepsy, Parkinson’s Disease and Motor Neurone Disease. We asked Rachel a few questions about her upcoming challenge... Are you looking forward to the event? Yeah, it’s my first international half marathon so it’s exciting and a good opportunity. It is hard work leading up to and training for the event but it will be worthwhile on

the day. I’m a little worried about how cold it will be though! Why have you chosen the Brain Research Trust? The BRT are a brilliant charity who support research into many different brain and nervous system conditions which affect so many people. They look at developing treatment and ultimately finding cures for the conditions mentioned above. I am fundraising and running on behalf of my friend Taylor, who is currently living with Motor Neurone Disease, so I like to try and raise the profile of the Brain Research Trust and particularly MNDA on his behalf. He continues to be a total inspiration to myself and so many others, so he is my reason for running.

What time are you aiming for? Anything under 2 hours! Hopefully around the 1 hour 50 mark but I will honestly just be happy to complete it and hopefully raise the profile and some money for the BRT along the way. So if you can’t think of anything worse than running for 2 hours solid hopefully you can support and sponsor me instead. If you would like to sponsor Rachel or wish her well you can visit her fundraising page or her Twitter using the details below! Good luck Shorty!
