For breathtaking views, fresh mountain air and warm sunshine, take to the trails!
Whether strolling the Animas River Trail in town, or hiking the Animas Mountain Trail to snag a bird’s-eye view, Durango residents and visitors never miss an opportunity to enjoy nature’s abundant beauty.
Our community boasts 100 miles of trails within city limits to explore, and 300 miles within 30 minutes of town. On average, these trails are visited by 100,000 people each season, according to visitor data collected through a trail intercept study in 2018. And that number rose an estimated 40% in the pandemic.
While the trails are designed to sustain use, remember to recreate responsibly. Follow Leave No Trace principles and trail etiquette.
RESPECT ALL TRAIL CLOSURES, and obtain proper permits for state and federal lands.
USE ESTABLISHED TRAILS. Don’t blaze your own path.
If you encounter mud or water, walk through it, not around, to prevent trail widening and preserve fragile vegetation.
IF YOU PACK IT IN, PLEASE PACK IT OUT. Don’t trash the trails.
YIELD TO OTHER TRAIL USERS, especially those traveling uphill. Slow down, establish communication and pass one another safely.
KEEP DOGS ON A LEASH IN CITY LIMITS. Pets may only be off-leash, but under voice control in Durango’s dog parks and the San Juan National Forest.
BE FRIENDLY! These trails can connect our community in more ways than one.
