EXECUTIVE STATEMENT

"It gives me great pleasure to present the Annual Report for DUNKGRASSROOTS for the year ending 30 December 2020. It was a challenging but also rewarding opportunities year for our organization. Despite the challenges of Coronavirus, the year finished with total revenue of 556,204.29Ghc and a rollover of 71,577.62Ghc. The impact of Coronavirus was significant, with our centres shut for ten weeks and all valid projects halted, including the funding stream. During this time, we continued to provide services to the community with relief materials. Once the centres reopened, we continued to provide a safe and inclusive venue for the community and we also adapted to digital learning for students. Thank you to all members during this time. We are continuing to assess all possibilities and will keep the members informed as these opportunities are realised"

"In addition to this, we also sponsor community programs in Tamale. In total, These programs provide essential services to the community and we are honoured to be able to be part of the provision of these programs. Iʼd likes to thank our Advisory board for the support they have given me and the organization throughout the year. I am very proud of what we have built and the opportunities we have created for the future. To the management and staff, I give my sincere gratitude, it was a tough year, with a lot of hard work and determination to make DUNK an action led

MELREPORT(YOUTH)

To measure if our projects led to the anticipated outcomes, we conducted interviews and handed out surveys gathering information and opinions from the youth children and parents. Youth filled in a baseline survey (98 replies) and a follow-up survey (70 replies) about half a year later to measure their progress. According to 98%, the benefits in sports practices and can use the life skills in other areas of life. In particular, 98% indicated that they feel better at solving conflicts now and 100% see themselves as role models for their communities.

Accordingly, 100% of the youth replied that the youth empowerment training increased their ability to better coordinate in a team and to unite individuals to a community working towards a common goal. Another life skill that showed improvement was the ability to handle problems comfortably with increasing numbers from 87% to 96%.

BEING A PART OF THE PROGRAM MAKES YOU UNDERSTAND THAT VIOLENCE IS NOT THE RIGHT WAY TO DEAL WITH EACH OTHER NOR PUNISHING THE KIDS.

MEL REPORT

The percentage of sports also increased from 19%-25% with more than 6 hours a week while improving their health and well-being. These results show an amazing improvement, especially considering the restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic that limit the possibilities to participate in and conduct some activities. Hence the ongoing pandemic, we tried to positively influence health sensitization, which seemed to have been a success as 96% of youth indicate that they now have increased knowledge of health practices related to COVID-19.

One of the main aspects of our program is to improve gender focus/ participation through integrated sports which means, empowering girls, make them feel safe and educate the community about gender equity. Compared to the year before there was no increase in the belief that boys and girls should have the same opportunities in life but this is due to the fact that the percentage with 98% was already really high. That the youth empowerment education was still successful for the youth in terms of gender education, could be seen in the interviews.

MEL REPORT (CHILDREN)

To monitor the influence of our program among children, we also conducted some survey research where the collection was an amazing success reaching the overall record of 404 survey participants with an age range from 6-16 years. One of the main objectives for DUNK is to provide safe areas for children and youth to feel comfortable practising sports and increase their activity level, health, and have a positive impact on their lives in general. Compared to the previous year, DUNK increased the impact area by expanding from 4 to 7 locations providing more children with safe spaces for sports. 51% of the children stated that they did not have a safe place to practice sports. This was also highlighted by one of the youth, Christian Sackey, 19, who said, “We used to have a very rough and unpleasant basketball court, but now, our community court has been renovated with the help of the program, and many children come over to play at the court because they feel safer now than they used to"

The overall positive impact of the project, especially during the pandemic, was nicely summarized by the youth Huzaifa Isshaku, 21, saying “Before the program was introduced to my community in the Sagnarigu district, most children here didn’t have anything to do due to the closure of schools caused by corona but now, they are engaged in a really meaningful program which is great. The DUNK program is an outstanding initiative and I would want more play areas to be created in the Northern Region of Ghana.” Next to the improvement of personal activity and health, 95% of the children also agreed that due to the programme they gained knowledge on health and hygiene practices which are especially relevant during the pandemic.

An improvement could be seen in that regard as the ratio from boys to girls participating in the questionnaire changed from 74% boys/ 26% girls to 65%boys/ 34% girls when comparing the current project to the previous one. The positive impact the project has on girl’s participation was also explained by our youth Elvis Adjei, 22, who said “In my community, girls are hardly given the chance to take part in sporting activities yet the program gives every female the opportunity to do any sports of their choice and I think it is super amazing.” During the workshop, the other youth agreed with him by stating that back then, girls were not allowed to do sports but instead girls are said to be in the kitchen which has changed now.

The children widely accept gender equity in the DUNK's programme was shown in the surveys as 96% agreed that girls and boys should have the same opportunities in life which is an increase of 7% compared to the previous year. 95% also stated that due to the programme they have more knowledge on gender rights and 91% agreed that they feel comfortable having a trainer of the opposite sex. Kwesi Boateng, 17years, highlights how the project positively influences the whole community in terms of gender equity by saying “The program is making a positive impact by empowering girls to engage themselves in sporting activities and that is super cool” and during the mainstream workshop, the youth strengthened his point stating at first I thought it was only guys that can coach but the

MEL REPORT (PARENTS)

Another relevant aspect of the programme was to include the parents in DUNK's activities by raising awareness about children’s rights and by increasing the acceptance of girls’ participation in sports. In the previous year, only 45% of the parents showed engagement in the area of development in future programs. In the current year, 91% of the children stated that their parents are supportive of their participation in sports and 79% highlighted that their parents are actively involved in DUNK activities. This positive development was also noticed by youth Mabel Lartey, 20, who said “During DUNK activities, I see so many parents coming around to watch us train with their wards. I really see the program creating positive change because we have a safe space renovated through the program.” During the workshop, other youth agreed with her by stating that parents feel more safe and peaceful when their wards are on the courts with us because they come around sometimes to see for themselves how happy their wards are during practices. Mabel also found how her role as a youth leader provides her with knowledge and confidence to step up for children’s rights in her community as she mentioned that “There was a situation where a parent wouldn't allow the child to come for training practice but through what I was taught as a youth leader, I was able to convince the parent to allow the child to attend practice.

DUNK also conducted some interviews with parents to learn about their perspectives. For example, Mrs Patient Crab said “Thank you to DUNK because if there was no DUNK in their communities the majority of kids would go wayward. We appreciate you!” and she also noticed the positive change her child is going through due to the program. “Emelia gets protected well when she comes here. Since she started engaging in the DUNK program, she has really changed for the better and she talks to people without being shy.”

Another parent, Epe, supported this view by saying “Although my son is not old enough, he acts matured since he joined the program and this place is very secured. Usually, Perry goes to play around which is not safe but now he comes to the centre-right after school to learn and play because all work and no play, makes Jack a dull boy. I am safe and secured with all the programs here and I am glad. I am so happy that even at home, my son is very outspoken.”
