A POLITICAL DECISION

Mushatt’s Natural Infant Drops

For many years now parents from all over the country, but particularly in our area have been raising funds to help put together a modern childrens' hospital in Crumlin. WHILE opening a new unit in the Crumlin Hospital some time ago, Minister for Health Mary Harney TD. also opened a debate that could see the closure of the Crumlin Hospital in the near future. Numerous protest by parents of local children and former patients have helped to raise the issue and involve the public before another facility is lost to the area. Only recently a long running campaign by locals succeeded in keeping open the Crumlin Swimming Pool facility- at least until the end of this year. However recent Comments by Dr. Maurice Neligan on the siting of the National Children’s Hospital at the Mater in Dublin North Inner City confirm the views long held by Labour Party TD Dr. Mary Upton Deputy Upon said: “Dr. Maurice Neligan, has recently withdrawn his formerly enthusiastic support for the construction of the National Children’s Hospital at the Mater Hospital in Dublin’s north inner city. I welcome his honesty in admitting that

their children. What is even worse is that this project continues at a time when we are closing wards in Crumlin Children’s Hospital and we have 1,800 children on waiting lists for operations. “It is clear that this decision was politically influenced in an effort to ‘bring home the bacon’ to Drumcondra. But narrow political opportunism should not be the deciding factor in a vital national facility. Far better to reopen the wards in Tallaght,

Temple Street and Crumlin, cut the waiting lists and begin to plan for more august economic times when we can develop a world class paediatric hospital on a green field site, which the state most likely already owns thanks to NAMA. A high-tech, state of the art facility is needed to serve the children of this country, but the location should be chosen to provide optimum health care, access and environment.”

Tallaght dole queue grows and grows Sinn Féin Councillor Seán Crowe has called on the Government to produce a specific plan to tackle unemployment black-spots after Tallaght’s unemployment figure jumped by more than 500 in July to 11,169. Councillor Crowe said this is one of the highest increases in unemployment th roughout the state with only Cork City, Limerick City and Galway City recording higher jumps. Speaking at a protest outside the Tallaght Social Welfare Office Councillor Crowe said: “The state-wide unem-

ployment figure rose by 8,500 during July. Of that 8,500, 507 were in Tallaght alone. “Clearly we have a problem with unemployment blackspots and the Government needs to bring forward a specific strategy, as part of an overall job creation strategy, to tackle these areas. “Tallaght has seen its fair share of job losses over the past couple of years with the loss of companies such as APW, Packard, Gallaghers, Jacobs, Sujitsu and now we are possibly facing the threat of further possible job losses at the CityWest Hotel.

is not the way to tackle unemployment. “Jobs can be created. Solutions exist. The government needs to take immediate actions now. “Sinn Féin has put forward a comprehensive set of costed proposals to retain and create jobs. “These include: €500 million youth jobs fund to create 20,000 new entrepreneur and business jobs. Create jobs through essential construction– hospitals, schools, public transport networks and roll-out of broadband. A new green technology body – Eolas Glás

“There has been little or no effort from Government to replace these jobs or to provide training for those who lost their jobs and to adapt to new emerging industries. “Clearly, if we could make a concerted effort to stem the loss of jobs in unemployment blackspots throughout the state then this would go a long way to stemming the national figures. “The tide of emigration is masking the true extent of the jobs crisis in this state and the Government is shamefully turning a blind eye to this. Would you try blind dating? €289

Have you ever been set up on a blind date by your friends? That was the question recently asked to over 3300 Irish singles on Ireland’s largest online dating website, AnotherFriend.com. The results show a surprising lack of experience in blind dating, but a definite willingness to give it a go.The poll revealed that 62% of singles have never been on a blind date, but “wouldn't rule it out”. Only 12% of those who have not tried it, stated that they “wouldn't dream of letting [their] friends suggest someone” for them. Of the 27% of single Irish men and women who had tried blind dating, a significant 13% said that it had resulted in them finding their “perfect partner”. On the other side, 56% of those who had experimented with this form of dating, said it had been “a complete disaster”, with the remaining 32% reporting that they are still friends with the person.

“DUBLINERS should use water sparingly and wisely right throughout the year and not just during the dry summer weather, because it is a limited resource and a very valuable one”, John Tierney, Dublin City Manager said last week. “There is a limit to the amount of raw water that can be treated at Dublin’s four water treatment plants each day and Dublin’s water supply operates to very fine margins, as demand often matches or exceeds supply. Storage of raw water in the Dublin Region is falling but has not as of yet reached a level that would warrant the introduction of restrictions on supply. The Region’s largest raw water storage reservoir at Poulaphouca is currently at 120 days as opposed to 200 days when full. It is therefore of great importance that everybody plays their part in conserving supply in order to minimise the possibility of having to place restrictions on supply. The City Council has published a series of publications on-line at www.dublincity.ie and www.taptips.ie on using water sensibly at home, in the garden, in the office and at school. Among the tips are • A garden hose or sprinkler uses more water in 1 hour than most families will use in a day for washing themselves, clothes, dishes, fruit and vegetables, drinking, etc • Lawns do not need to be watered. Grass can survive for long periods without water and will quickly recover. • Consider buying a water butt (€40 from Dublin City Council) to collect rainwater from the house roof and downpipes and use to water plants • A ten minute “power shower” will use more water than a bath.

(250 litres v 80 litres) Have a quick shower! • A hose uses over 90 litres of water to wash a car. Use a bucket instead. • Keep a jug of water in the fridge, instead of running the tap for a minute and using 6 litres of water to get one glass full. • Use a basin of water instead of a running tap when cleaning vegetables/fruit. Use the leftover water to give your potted plants a drink. • A third of all water used in the home is flushed away. Put a bottle filled with water into your cistern. • Fix dripping taps, cisterns or pipes. “Since each of us drinks only 3 to 4 litres of the 150 litres of water a day that we use, there is plenty of opportunity for each of us to reduce our daily use of water without impacting on the quality of our lives. We ask everyone to value the water supply and use water wisely”, says John Tierney. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) confirms the good quality of Dublin’s water, with virtually full compliance with quality requirements achieved. Dublin City Council Central Laboratory is accredited to ISO 17025 quality standard and conducts over 200,000 individual tests on some 30,000 water samples each year at its purpose

built laboratory building in Marrowbone Lane, Dublin 8. The Central Laboratory was the first in the country to be accredited to test for the Cryptosporidium and Giardia waterborne parasites that are found in raw water. The City Manager congratulated Denis Morrissey, Chief Scientific Officer and his team as well as the teams working 24 hours a day in each the Region’s four Water Treatment Works, for the consistently good quality of Dublin’s water. The average demand for drinking water in Dublin is 540 million litres a day and the four water treatment plants were designed to supply 518 million litres a day. Water supply in the Dublin region has been very finely balanced between supply and demand for many years and this will continue until key infrastructural projects, including a new water source to augment all existing sources, is in place. Dublin City Council is actively looking for a new source of water that will augment all existing waster sources. It will be a national project and will supply water to communities all along the route, from wherever the water is taken, all the way back to Dublin. “The capacity of the rivers in the Dublin region to supply water is lim-

ited and we need a new source because demand for water is increasing and will continue to increase”, says John Tierney. “Demand is expected to increase to 800 million litres a day by 2031 and we are planning now to

meet the expected demand. We are proud of our record of meeting the increasing demand for water over the last decade, with no new water source or increased water treatment capacity.

Bathroom

HEAVEN Do you love your bathroom? Tolerate it? Downright hate it? While space may be an issue, there’s still a lot that can be achieved in even a small space. THIS WEEK pickapro.ie, the website of home and garden contractors asks plumbing companies A1 Action Master (1800 422 799), Crowley Heating and Plumbing (083 309 9428) and Thomas O’ Reilly Heating and Plumbing (087 797 4654) about what can be done to refurbish a bathroom. Planning The first thing you need to do is make a bathroom renovations checklist. Take a small tour of your bathroom, and examine each and

Home & garden advice from the professionals at

www.pickapro.ie and tested manufacturers – their equipment will stand the test the time and installation. Lighting If you have a small bathroom or have limited lights in the bathroom then consider adding some fixtures to improve lighting, that will not just make your bathroom look good but also will help to open up the space. You can also consider adding a skylight window, if the source of natural light in the bathroom is limited. Flooring The main consideration when choosing bathroom flooring is moisture – whatever you choose must be

every part closely. Make a checklist of what you’d like to change – think about layout, flooring, furniture, tiling, window fittings.

suitable for a wet environment. Ceramic tiling is a very practical and versatile choice. The main downside is that it’s cold underfoot, but if that’s a big issue for you, underfloor heating can resolve that problem. Stone is also an option, albeit a more expensive one. If you’d really like wood, engineered wood is a good option because it has a plywood base that holds up well against moisture. Storage Storage is critical to the success of your bathroom scheme. So, if you’re considering a bathroom refurbishment, now is your chance to get the storage right.

Custom made units are the best way to maximize space. They will really increase the storage space available to you. Ventilation If ventilation is inadequate in your bathroom, discuss upgrading the extractor fan. The typical bathroom extractor fan is inadequate for the size of the room. Using Accents Finally, to make your new bathroom an more inviting, add few accents such as a painting or a vase.

pickapro.ie would like to thank A1 Action Master (1800 422 799), Crowley Heating and Plumbing (083 309 9428) and Thomas O’ Reilly Heating and Plumbing (087 797 4654) for their advice for this article. To see more information about either company including photos and customer recommendations, check out www.pickapro.ie/plumber/dublin/. You will also find lots of other home improvement specialists on www.pickapro.ie– including builders, landscapers, painters and electricians. If you operate a home improvement company and would like more information about presenting your work on pickapro.ie, please call us on 01 4966176.

Bathroom Fixtures For small bathrooms, it’s a good idea to keep your fixtures simple and classic here. However, even when space is limited, do try and include a fairly, good sized handbasin. Undersized basins are awkward to use and lead to lots of splashes on the floor. Also, keep with tried

With over 900 entrants divided between the Super Sprint (600m swim/16km bike/ 4km run) and the standard Olympic distance (1500m s w i m / 4 0 k m bike/10km run) the event is now fully subscribed and promises to be a fantastic event for competitors and spectators alike. Participation levels are soaring in triathlon, unquestionably the fastest growing sport in Ireland. At the elite level, Irish athletes have been enjoying unprecedented success internationally this year. Aileen Morrison’s 3rd place at the ITU World

Championships series race in Hamburg and Bryan Keane’s recent 7th place at Sprint World Championships in Lausanne bode well for London 2012 and the profile of the sport domestically. Organisers Piranha Triathlon Club are delighted to have reached capacity, and attribute this to a number of factors, including a successful campaign by the race committee to attract more newcomers to the sport. Those who signed up for the Super Sprint, which is aimed at beginners, availed of incentives such as open water swim practice sessions, free training programmes, a familiarisation run on the course route and lots of tips and advice on

the dedicated Facebook page “Dublin CityTri”. Piranha Triat hlon Club is extremely grateful for the continuing support of headline sponsors Gatorade, a company that is dedicated to the sport of triathlon, not just in Ireland but also in the UK and throughout the world. Gatorade also sponsors current World and European Champion Alistair Brownlee. Additional support is generously provided by swim section sponsors Blue Seventy, bike section sponsors Cycle Superstore and run section sponsors Runways. As the final preparations get underway, Race Director Matt Coughlan has this advice for

anyone planning to watch the race, which is very spectator-friendly and promises to be an exciting day out: "To assist with route planning, information about parking and traffic diversions is available from the website www.dub lincitytriathlon.com. From the swim start at the UCD Boat Club, it’s a short stroll into the Phoenix Park to watch the bike and run sections before cheering on friends and family at the finish line opposite the Zoo on Chesterfield Avenue.” Competitors to watch in the Olympic distance event, which this year is the National Championships, include Bryan McCrystal, Kevin Keane, Joe Lynch and up-andcoming Junior athlete John Reidy. European age-group gold medallist Elena Maslova is the favourite in the womens’ competition with Aoife O’Connor, Aoife Lynch and Joyce Wolfe all capable of a podium finish. Junior athlete Laura Casey, fresh from her top ten finish in the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore, will be hard to beat in the Super Sprint race, which will be a showcase of Ireland’s

young elite and development squad talent. The action starts this Sunday 29th August at 08h00 at the UCD Boat Club, Islandbridge. Distribution of the prizes (valued at over €5000) will take place from 14h30 at the Garda Boat Club where a complimentary post race pasta meal of Magnetti pasta will be available to competitors. Drinks and snacks by Angel Food will be available for purchase by supporters and spectators. breaking down on the road home from holiday AS IRISH families at home and abroad enjoy the final two weeks of the school holidays, an Irish roadside assistance company is urging parents to do some forward planning before they make their car journey home. The company, Mondial Assistance, is recommending that drivers take a few precautions before they set off for home, to ensure their car is ready for the drive back, minimising the risk of a breakdown along the way. “We’ve noticed an increase in the number of Irish holidaymakers who are using their car to get to their holiday destination this year, either by ferry to the continent or via the new motorway network to the country. It’s very easy to think that the holiday ends when you jump in the car and set off home. However, it’s never really over until you have arrived home safely. It’s important to properly prepare for the journey home to prevent a stressful end to your break,” says Martin Lyons, Director General Manager with Mondial Assistance. “It’s easy to forget

that souvenirs, gifts and holiday purchases all add extra weight to the vehicle. Check and if appropriate, adjust tyre pressures to ensure you are driving safely. In addition, the car may have done many miles during a family holiday, in terms of day trips and excursions. With this in mind, drivers should take a few minutes to do some simple checks, such as water and oil levels, to potentially avoid the dreaded roadside assistance call.” “If you have roadside assistance cover in place, the important point to remember is have the phone number of the roadside assistance provider should any motoring difficulties arise,” advises Lyons. Check the battery the night before, if you haven’t used the car during your holiday • Check the lights are still working • Check oil and water levels • If you’re travelling with a heavier load, adjust tyre pressures according to the handbook • Make sure bike racks, tow bars and roof racks are

Working 5 to 9 offers solution to job dissatisfaction JOB satisfaction has fallen to a record low according to an industry body whose research reveals employees are nervous of losing their jobs and unhappy about pay freezes and cuts. It's a dismal situation but one that can be solved says business expert and author Emma Jones. A survey of job satisfaction levels from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Develop-

ment (CIPDU) based on responses from 2,000 employees, makes for miserable reading. The report claims "worsening standards of living, falling job satisfaction, and high levels of job insecurity in the workplace" with the job satisfaction index having fallen to a record low. The survey revealed particular deterioration amongst public sector employees' attitudes towards their

jobs and management, as the impact of government spending cuts on jobs, pay and benefits kicks in. But there is a way out of this malaise, claims Emma Jones who is founder of the home business website Enterprise Nation www .en terprisenation.com, a business expert, and author of two books, the most recent having been written for anyone

"The results from CIPD don't come as a surprise" says Jones "we hear every day from employees who want to earn more and be more in control of their working life. This is why I wrote the book 'Working 5 to 9' which shows employees how to build a business after office hours. It's the best way to start as you give yourself time to build confidence and cash, and before you know it you could be operating full time as your own boss and benefiting from the freedom and flexibility that comes with being self-employed." Solar cells inspired by leaves THERE are very few problems nature hasn’t solved already, but what do we really know about biomimicry? To celebrate the Inter national Year of Biodiversity, the Heritage Council will host a lecture on Tuesday 7th Septem-

ber 2010 by US biomimicry expert Dr. Dayna Baumeister. Biomimicry is an innovation method that studies nature’s best ideas and then imitates these designs and processes to solve human problems. Examples include studying a

The goal is to create products, processes, and policies---new ways of living and working--that are welladapted to life on earth over the long haul. Dr. Dayna Baumeister is co founder of the Biomimicry Guild, the only innovation company in the world to use a deep knowledge of biological adaptations to help designers, engineers, architects, and business leaders solve design and engineering challenges sustainably. Speaking in advance of the inaugural Heritage Council Lecture Series, Chief Executive of the Heritage Council, Michael Starrett said, “the biomimicry discipline challenges us to think differently about nature and our

relationship with it. The shift is one in which nature becomes a source of inspiration rather than something that needs to be managed or controlled. If we are to develop our economies in a more sustainable way we need to work more closely with nature and not simply consume it. Biomimicry takes us beyond the conservation message to look at nature as a resource and a guide for the future. It is timely that in the International Year of Biodiversity, this inaugural lecture by the Heritage Council will introduce the subject of biomimicry, demonstrating the important role and value of our natural heritage to new audiences”. Dr. Baumeister, who will be speaking in Ireland for the first time will describe what’s new in the field of bio-inspired design and the promise of biomimicry to solve grand challenges while conserving life’s genius. Homes sought for homeless ‘ACCESS to housing is our greatest challenge and one which we urgently need to resolve. The delivery of housing is essential to the implementation of a Pathway to Home, a strategy which has been agreed as the way forward by homeless services in Dublin and which is guided by the main aim of simplifying and speeding up the journey for people who are at risk of and who are currently experiencing long-term homelessness.' stated Cathal Morgan, Director of the Homeless Agency and member of the Forum Statutory and voluntary homeless service providers are doing everything in their capacity to ensure that individual’s who are accessing their services and who are ready for independent living are ready to move into housing with the necessary supports, as soon as it becomes available. To support this, Minister Finneran and his officials have put in place a number of

important schemes to assist access to housing for people who are homeless. However, what is critically needed, is the owners of all types of properties (developers or estate agents) who are interested in making properties available to lease or buy, to contact the Housing and Sustainable Communities Agency (HSCA) or Dublin local authorities as soon as possible’ A dedicated housing procurement team from the four Dublin local authorities has been in place to work with the HSCA, The Irish Council for Social Housing (ICSH) and Associated Housing Bodies to accelerate progress towards meeting the level of housing required to meet the needs of people through the following housing options: The enhanced social housing leasing arrangements (investment by the Minister of €20million capital funding) Capital Assistance Scheme for the provision of

mainstream accommodation (investment by the Minister of €25 million, which includes people who are homeless as a ‘priority category of need’) The Rental Accommodation Scheme (RAS) and Private rental ‘Current funded services are being reconfigured so as to ensure a clear fit with the Pathway to Home model and in keeping with the National Homeless Strategy, The Way Home. As sufficient housing comes into place, there will be a greater emphasis on the localisation of services and this will decrease the quantity of services in the city centre area and increase the level of supports available. The proposed decommissioning of not-fit-for-purpose building facilities will take place on a prioritised basis and will be managed subject to the availability of housing’. Cathal Morgan added.

The girls cycled 370km over 5 days. They set off on their journey from Hacketstown, Co. Carlow and their route took them to Kilkenny, Clonmel, Cahir, Mallow, Killarney, Kenmare and finally Ballinskelligs. The two students set themselves the challenge to show their support for Special Olympics Ireland - an organisation whose work they both have huge respect and admiration for.

URBAN horses in Dublin need to be better looked after according to Labour Party TD for Dublin South Central, Mary Upton Deputy Upon said: “Urban horses can often times be cruelly mistreated, with insufficient food or shelter. As winter approaches many urban horses will have to be put down as they are not adequately cared for. This is not acceptable. Horses are for sale at some fairs for a pittance. They are bought but never looked after. In 2009 alone the Dublin SPCA rescued 106 horses from Dublin and the surrounding counties.” “On a number of occasions I have raised the issue of Smithfield Market, where horses can be bought and sold for a pittance. While there are difficulties surrounding the closure of this market, this is not a good enough reason to allow horses to be purchased and subsequently neglected, abandoned or tortured.” “We cannot have a situation whereby horses are purchased for next to nothing at horse fairs and effectively abandoned a few weeks later to roam around on scrubland in Ballyfermot or Tallaght. Horse fairs must be regulated and horse identification systems must be put in place so as to track horses and to prosecute people who abandon or mistreat their horses.” Deputy Upton concluded: “The Minister’s for Agriculture and Environment have a responsibility to ensure that animal welfare is prioritised and that those who are responsible for cruelty and neglect are held accountable. We cannot allow the economic downturn and insufficient regulation to lead to horses being abandoned or mistreated in Dublin.”

Head shop legislation comes into effect NEW legislation to tackle the supply and use of head-shop substances is to come into effect this week. The Psychoactive Substances Act 2010 makes it an offence, punishable by up to five years imprisonment, to sell or supply the substances that were once legally available in outlets known as "head-shops". The act applies to the sale of all unregulated psychoactive substances, in the event of new such substances becoming available.

Full search and seizure powers are provided to the Gardaí within the legislation.

Call for ESB transparency on customer cut-offs call for ESB transparency on customer cut-offs Dublin South West Fianna Fáil T.D. Charlie O’Connor, who is Vice-Chairman of the Joint

Oireachtas Committee on Social & Family Affairs, says he supports the call from the Minister for Social Protection Éamon Ó Cuív T.D. that the ESB provide

a ‘profile’ of the customers being cut-off for non-payment. “Figures released this week show an average of 900 households a month are being cut off because

of non-payment of their ESB bill. This is extremely worrying and is a major increase on the figures from a year ago. I know the Minister is very concerned

about this and is urging the ESB to supply a profile of the customers that are being cut-off. This is very important as we must be able to distinguish between people who really cannot afford to pay off arrears and those who simply won’t pay or enter into a payment plan,” said Deputy O’Connor. “I want people to be aware that there is an exceptional needs payment available for those in need. There is help for people in very diffi-

Locals reach final of electric picnic competition FIVE lucky people from across Dublin were announced as finalists of the European Recycling Platform (ERP) in conjunction with Electric Picnic Art Competition. Siobhan Griffin from Dublin 8, Jordan Ralph from Dublin 12, Conor Gallagher from Dublin 7 and Fionnuala Mahon and Ruth Doorley from Dublin 4 submitted designs which will be built exclusively from waste electrical items to highlight the importance of electronic recycling. The overall winner of the competition will have the chance to see their creation brought to life by world renowned artist and sculptor, Shrine and showcased in the Global Green area at Electric Picnic.

The innovative designs included the Rubix Cube Washing Machine, submitted by Siobhan Griffin, which will see recycled washing machine spray painted and used as an individual cube with an Andy Warhol style effect. Jordan Ralph designed Mech-Organics, an interactive music station and visual installation, made out of old electrical items, where festival goers can create organic, minimal techno music. Conor Gallagher designed The extinction of Homo Discardus, an installation that will mimic an archaeological dig site from the future! Also, Fionnuala Mahon and Ruth Doorley have designed their Washing Drum Circle, a social circular space with upturned machine

drums which will be used as stools where festival goers to sit back and soak up the electric atmosphere! A gallery of the winning shortlist designs from budding artists from across the country will be presented online at www.electricpicnic.i e. It includes an image of each electrical waste design as well as a brief description on how it will add to the festival experience and inspire festival goers to recycle their electrical waste. Electric Picnic promoter, John Reynolds said: “We are enjoying working with ERP at Electric Picnic this year, the quality of entries is exceptional and we look forward to seeing the winning design on display.” Festival goers will also see Shrine’s cre-

her entry, Siobhan said: “I love the idea of placing outsized objects in our environment and changing the scale of our relationship with them. It creates de-

Be your own life coach Clinical Hypnotherapist

KIERAN FITZPATRICK advises in his regular column on how to achieve your goals. IN THE LAST issue of The Local News, I was talking about summertime and holidays. And in this column I usually try to look on the positives and talk about how we can make our lives more positive and productive and fulfilling. Summertime is the time when things ripen and are ready for harvest. The time of year that we’ve been looking forward to all winter, holidays, bright days, warmth and optimism. People generally in better form, windows open, life seeming easier. Yet only last week I heard of another of the far too many cases of suicide in Ireland these days. Once again a young man. Depression and despair is something that we usually only hear about or associate with winter. Yet this case reminded me that when someone is feeling that down, the time of year or the weather makes very little difference. I know that this is not a cheery subject and might seem out of place in a column like this. But we all go through bad patches, the downs that are part of life’s ups and downs. And a lot of the advice I have given here is about managing different situations in life and much of that advice has been about talking to other people who can help you through those situations. Most years, around Christmas time I mention this subject also, as that is a time of year statistically where desperate people can begin to think of desperate measures. But as I said above, even in the bright days of summer there are those among us struggling. If you find yourself struggling emotionally, as soon as you can, find someone that you can trust to talk to. All of those old clichés are true, “a trouble shared is a trouble halved”. Sometimes, even getting the chance to think out loud brings about a new perspective on a previously unsolvable problem. If you cannot find a friend, then talk to your doctor, a counsellor or a therapist. People who are trained and used to talking with people in exactly your situation. Remember, no matter what is going on in your life, or how badly you feel, you are not the first or only human to have had that experience. And there are people out there who have helped other people like you to get through times like this. Everything passes and life goes on. And so it is such a shame when someone feels driven to take that step of “a permanent solution ot a temporary problem”, as I’ve heard it called. Feeling suicidal or having occasional suicidal thoughts is actually quite common. Thankfully, although far too common still, actual suicide is much more unusual. And, again, I usually give them a mention around Christmas time, but I noticed a few weeks ago a ceremony in Dublin to mark the 40th Anniversary of The Samaritans in Ireland. If you find yourself in a position where you need to talk to someone NOW, or if you are in a situation where there is nobody suitable or available for you to talk to, The Samaritans are there, at the end of the phone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Their number is 1850-60-90-90. It is a low call number and you don’t need to be suicidal, they are there to listen any time you need someone to talk to (www.samaritans.org). Helpful advice from your local Pharmacist Back to School: It’s that time of year again where the school holidays are drawing to a close and parents are starting to prepare for the new school year. As always you want to ensure your children remain fit and healthy throughout the year and minimise the amount of sick days as much as possible. Boosting your child’s immune system is vital in the prevention of colds and flus. There are a number of options available from multivitamins to probiotics and herbal treatments. Multivitamins: It is important to eat the right type of food to ensure your body obtains the right amount of vitamins and minerals. This will ensure your immune system is strong and that you have plenty of energy in order for you feel good mentally. Sometimes we need a little extra help to ensure we obtain all the vitamins we need and that is where supplements are important. It is vital to ask your pharmacist which vitamins are best suited to your child’s needs. A good example is Kiddipharmaton for children with appetite problems as there is an appetizer in it. Some multivitiamins for children do not contain iron so if your doctor has advised that your child is anaemic then ask your pharmacist to give you a product containing iron. For fussier children there is an excellent range of vitamins that are sweet like, Gummivits are a fantastic range with lots of products to suit different needs, some with extra calcium for children that do not like dairy products for healthy bones.

Probiotics: These are live bacterial products with lactobacilli, acidophilous and other agents to boost the good bacteria in your child’s system to fight off infection. These prove useful for children that suffer recurrent infections and especially after courses of antibiotics to rebuild the child’s immune system and prevent thrush. They can be used from infancy upwards. There are many different brands available and most can be mixed with milk and juices so they are very easy to take. Echinacea: This is an herbal product proven to actively boost the immune system and in turn prevent infection. It can be taken alongside multivitamins and probiotics. It comes in both a tablet and drop formulation. Boosting Brainpower and concentration: Fish oils and products containing Omega oils have been shown to aid memory and improve concentration as well as other health benefits. They can be particularly useful for children with Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHA), a condition that affects 35% of children. Udos oil is a particularly effective product and the company that produce it carried out a study on a classroom of children with ADHD and found that it produced marked improvements in the children’s concentration levels and learning abilities. We have additional information on this study available in McKee Pharmacy and we would be delighted to discuss the merits of omega oils with

you. Another excellent product is MorEPA (Smart Fats). MorEPA® capsules are tasty and chewable. This makes them suitable for people who do not like the fishy taste of normal fish oil capsules, or for people who have difficulty swallowing pills. The richest and purest source of Omega 3 EPA fish oil you can buy. One 1,000 mg capsule contains 535 mg EPA (approx) and 87 mg of DHA (approx) – pure essential Omega 3 fatty acids. The capsules are free from odour and any fishy taste due to the addition of natural lemon. Just one capsule per day gives you the entire Omega 3 EPA you need. Instead of taking three to five capsules of fish oil a day, you only have to take one single capsule of MorEPA®. This

Fiona Boyle MPSI, McKee Pharmacy, 2 McKee Road, Finglas, Dublin 11. Telephone: 01-8361203 means you can avoid the surplus fat that you would get from consuming ordinary fish oil. At McKee Pharmacy, we recommend it for students studying for exams as the EPA in MorEPA reduces stress levels while DHA aids memory and con-

centration. MorEPA Mini® is a strawberry flavour omega 3 supplement for children and can be used from age 5 upwards. It can be mixed with food and drinks such as yogurt and fruit juices. In my next article I will be discussing the

treatment options and offering advice for Head lice, Scabies, Worms and other common and prevalent childhood conditions. Contact Fiona in McKee Pharmacy, 2 McKee Road, Finglas to discuss all your families health needs. Tel 8361203.

Top 10 tips for getting ready for preschool With the introduction of the ECCE scheme (Early Childhood Care & Education) more children than ever will start preschool shortly. Irene Gunning, CEO of Irish Preschool Play Association (IPPA) which represents 50,000 families nationwide – nearly a quarter of whom are in Dublin through its membership of crèches, preschools, after school and parent & toddler groups, has the following tips to get the children and the parents off to the best possible start. The majority of parents already have their child’s name down on their chosen local preschool, but for those who don’t there is still time to contact their local preschools and check availability. Parents should visit the preschool and chat to the manager about how it operates, start time, finish times, lunch policy, the typical daily routine of children and

whether the service is part of the ECCE scheme and if there are optional extras to consider. A shortcut to consider is to check in with your local county childcare committee who can give you a list of the ECCE registered preschools in the area and details about the ECCE scheme and answers to frequently asked questions are up on the website of the Office of the Minister for Children & Youth Affairs www.omc.ie Once the place is booked most preschool managers will give you an induction letter or talk through the practical ways to get your child off to the best start and what to expect from day one. Preschool teachers are ready for the settling in phase and are totally committed to ensuring that the child is comfortable and happy from the start. You will see that the preschool curriculum is a gentle stepping stone

onto the education ladder, where children meet and make new friends, learn the importance of turn taking and sharing and most importantly build in their own confidence and life skills through a child centred quality programme of activity and play. In the meantime, here are some practical tips to calm the nerves: Dig out that induction letter you got from your preschool manager with details about school bags, timetable, healthy lunches etc. and make sure you are organised in advance, so that you are not unduly stressed on the first few days. Will you walk or drive – decide in advance? Make sure the school-bag and lunch box you choose are easy to manage and think about the best clothes for your child to wear. That doesn’t mean their Sunday best. It means clothes your child

can play in, without fear of paint splashes and clothes that are easy to manage when visiting the toilet. Talk to your child about preschool but resist the temptation of hyping it up too much as the child might be totally underwhelmed with the reality. Refer to the teachers – who you’ve most likely already met - by their first names and tell your child about the other children, the toys, the painting, the play dough and the kind of activities you know that will interest them. Many children have already visited the preschool in advance of term start. If not, you could ask a child you know in the neighbourhood who has attended the group to give your child a rundown on what it’s like. Focusing on the positive aspects of course! In the week before start day explain to your child

that you or another loved one will be dropping and collecting them from preschool and how that will work. Tell your child the two things you, or your minder, will do while they are at preschool to give the child a sense of the short time involved, like going to the bank and preparing lunch. It’s not too long and not long too short – in fact just enough time to have fun before being collected! On reaching the door each morning, smile and treat teacher like a friend. Relax and don’t fuss and let your child know that you’re confident that they can manage. Remember that your child is alert to the emotional messages you send out, so don’t panic and don’t let the child see you crying. If they do, explain that you are crying because this is a happy day. If your child is fine going in on the first day, just walk away and don’t look for problems where none exist. The majority of children will sail in, no problem. Treat yourself to a cup of coffee and a little treat – this is a big day for you too! If your child does cry going in, follow the lead of the teacher. Often children who come in the door crying are okay and laughing five minutes later. Rest assured that if your child is not settling the teacher will contact you.

from Irish Preschool Play Association Make sure to return for pick up on time as children can fret when they see other children leave before them. Don’t expect the teacher to give you detailed feedback in the first two weeks when the whole group is really settling in. If there is any problem teacher will let you know, otherwise no news is good news. After the session, ask your child about the sand, the books, the toys and the other children. If your questions are specific, you’ll get more information. Finally, make sure you are not under time constraints in the first

week of preschool. You’ve got to be prepared to stay and help them settle in – so make sure you

have that flexibility. It is important that your child doesn’t feel pressurised or hurried.

CAO office chaos According to Mr Joseph O’Grady, Operations Manager of the Central Applications Office (CAO), “Access to the CAO website was affected because of a malicious attack from an unknown source on Monday 23 August. The website was available intermittently between 6.10 am and 1 pm, when the problem was resolved by CAO technical staff. The system is being monitored 24 hours a day to ensure continuity of online services. “More than 23,000 online acceptances were recorded by the end of day (5.15pm) despite these problems with the website’s availability. Last year, 22,000 acceptances were made by the end of the first day with, over 95% of total acceptances made online. “We would like to thank students and parents for their patience. People concerned about accepting an offer online can log in to the ’my application’ section of the CAO website to confirm their acceptance has been recorded.” “Acceptances can be also be made by post. There is plenty of time for applicants to accept their offer as the deadline for acceptances is Monday 30th August at 5.15pm. Offers should be accepted

either online or by post, not both. “Our priority is to process offers and accept-

ances on behalf of students and the Higher Education Institutes (HEIs). We

plan to conduct a full investigation into this attack in due course,” he said.
