LOCAL BOXER

TURNS PRO Driven on by a burning ambition to box at the highest level, local boxer Brendan Fitzpatrick has turned professional. He fights his first professional fight on Saturday week in the National Stadium. THERE is a huge attraction on the bill with Kiko Martinez, who defeated Bernard Dunne in the world title fight last year, taking on the French boxer Arsen Martirosyan. Brendan started boxing at a tender age and has been a member of West Finglas Boxing Club for many years. Right throughout the various age groups, Brendan has come out with top honours – winning Dublin, Leinster and All Ireland titles on the way. At amateur level he more recently boxed 81kg and will box at Super middle in the professional ranks. Mention of Bernard Dunne and Brendan is the

first to jump in and tell the Local News', 'I really want to thank Brendan Dunne, Bernard's father who has been a great help to me in improving my boxing as also has Bernard himself, a wonderful help' Over the years the Finglas boxing club has had it

ups and downs but teacher Joe Vaughan and the Fitzpatrick family Joe Kearney and Leo Keogh come in for high praise for keeping the club going when there was no money and very few people willing to help out in training the young boxers. Today the club caters for

boys and girls of the area and can take credit for keeping many youths on the straight and narrow through the discipline of regular exercise and the boxing ethic. We are in the kitchen of Brendan's cousin Johnny Fitzpatrick in Finglas west, as we chat of old times and some of the wonderful victories recent victories Brendan has achieved. Brendan is just back from Belfast where he has been training full time for the past five weeks. Jim Rock and John Breen are the co managers who have taken Brendan under their wing. Jim Rock is on record as saying that he had seen the potential for Brendan some time ago. While we sip tea, Brendan is sticking to distilled water and has set himself a careful diet. 'this is something I have wanted to do most of my life and now I have the opportunity I am not going to waste it. I gave up work a couple of months continued on page 2

worked in the painting and decorating and home improvements industry, but boxing and the lure of boxing at the highest level was too strong ;'I had to prove it to myself that I could do this' he tells us, after admitting that in his teens he had given up boxing and had enjoyed life but always the call

to box was there and he decided to give it 'his best shot' The young woman in Brendan's life is supportive. 'For a while now Tara has known of my burning ambition and while she obviously does not want me to get hurt, she has given me great encouragement.' The women in

Thornton Hall will not address crime problem DUBLIN West representative Paul Donnelly has described the announcement from the Government on the Thornton Hall prison site as yet another indication of this Gov-

ernment’s disastrous attempts to tackle the State’s prison crisis. Mr. Donnelly said: “This Government intends to continue to pour further millions into what is

fundamentally a badly thought out idea. The construction of Thornton Hall is an ill-conceived ego driven projected started by Michael McDowell and continued by Dermot

Ahern. “The Government has already paid under McDowell’s watch, almost €30 million for the original site which had a value of just six million euro. It al-

lowed a further €1.3 million to be spent on purchasing additional land for access. Dermot Ahern has overseen another €10.3 million spent on professional fees and preliminary site

works. This can only be described as a wanton waste of taxpayers’ money.” “The tragedy of this wastage is that much of it could have been put to more efficient use improving prison conditions of the existing Mountjoy prison where chronic over-crowding has created serious health and safety issues.” “Where is the strategy to deal with the increasing rates of imprisonment? The number of prisoners in our system has rocketed over recent years while little to nothing has been done in dealing with the root causes of the massive surge – poverty, disadvantage and addiction.” “Without steps to address recidivism, proper drug and alcohol rehabilitative supports in prisons, educational facilities, addressing the vast number of mentally ill prisoners and their specific mental disabilities, the government's solution is to build Thornton Hall Prison, one only has to look at the American justice system to see that locking up people and increased sentences are not a solution to the underlying problems causing prisons to be bursting at the seams at present.” “By the time the extra cells in Thorn-

ton Hall are built, there will be a need for more to be built unless we fundamentally address penal reform, including the issues of the imprisonment of debtors and fine defaulters and non-violent offenders.” “It is ironic that we have a building in Blanchardstown lying empty that was earmarked for an enhanced probation

and welfare service. Many of these offenders could in fact be 'punished' through a more costeffective and humane community service regime, administered through a properly resourced Probation and Welfare Service.” “The problem of overcrowding in our prison services is completely unsustainable.”

Michaela had so much to live for The principal of the school attended by murdered schoolgirl Michaela Davis said she was a "lovely child who had so much to give and to live for". Terry Allen, head of St Mochta's National School, said the thoughts and prayers of the whole school community were with Michaela's family at this "very sad and upsetting time". He extended his sympathies to the family on their loss. Local Fine Gael Councillor is Kieran Dennison said the whole community was still coming to terms with the situation. "We are all appalled that something like this could happen to a 12-year-old child...It’s going to take a long time for people to get through this," he said.

Start with something special and you’ll finish with a room you love Let’s be honest, for many of us, the fun part of decorating our home is finishing it. We see ourselves lovingly adding those little personal touches like photos or flowers, finding the perfect lamp or finally hanging that beautiful photo we took last year. And naturally, we plan to enjoy the streams of compliments about our impeccable taste and style! UNFORTUNATELY, before we can reach that pleasant summit of achievement, we need to make big decisions about floors, window coverings, sofas. All expensive items that represent a major commitment. Get them right and we're well on our way. But get them wrong and they’re very hard to hide. Is it any wonder that so many of us end up playing it safe - with neutral floor coverings, neutral blinds, neutral suites. And yes, we can accessorise to our hearts content, but maybe it’ll never be quite the gorgeous, vibrant room we had hoped for. So, we've summoned the help of four experienced Dublin interior designers from pickapro.ie, a website which presents photos and customer recommendations

Pick nothing in isolation. Get all your samples together first for floors, curtains, wall paper, sofas and look at them together. Don’t jump ahead and buy say the sofa first.

2. Don't jump to conclusions Pick nothing in isolation. Get all your samples together first for floors, curtains, wall paper, sofas and look at them together. Don’t jump ahead and buy say the sofa first. You've

3. Keep it consistent Aim to maintain the one style throughout the room and preferably throughout the house, whether your chosen style is traditional, modern, contemporary or of a particular era. If your style is eclectic, choose carefully, as it is a style that can

look very disjointed and messy rather than stylish. 4. Live with your samples I always leave samples with the clients so they can live with them day and night under all lights and circumstances.

Good wallpapers and wallcoverings can be durable and cost effective. For example, it might take 3 days to paint a room because of the preparation and undercoats involved. However, that same room can be papered in a day.

5. Bringing in colour

6. Feature something (but not everything!)

Wallpaper is a really good way of adding extra dimension and colour to a room.

Don't try and make everything a feature! Let the real feature stand out. And keep

depending on application

an open mind on what’s a feature. It could be a fireplace, or maybe an old fashioned chandelier, or a painting.

Beware also the effect that the weather today may have on your decision. "Customers have a strong tendency to pick dark floors in Summer and light floors in Winter. It‘s just something to be aware of.

1. Start with something special

effectively tied yourself down and you won't get the result you want.

7. What's the weather like today

from home improvement professionals to give us a little courage for the trip. Here’s their advice….

Start with something that you love and that excites you - maybe a fabric or a picture or even your favourite teacup. And let that set the theme for the room. You'll find that the rest of your decisions will follow from that. For example, one of my clients started with a shaped chair. Just that simple item, led us to a room that was curvaceous and soft.

Interior Design advice from the professionals at And don't automatically go for a suite, especially if you‘re limited for space. Consider a sofa and some individual chairs or recliners because the chairs that come in a suite are often hugh. 9. Are you a fashionista? If you want a timeless look that won't date, then steer clear of fashions. Stick to what's beautiful and organic, like wood, stone and other natural materials.

8. Remember that showrooms are very big places

10. And finally, don’t be afraid to ask for help

It's a common mistake to buy furniture in a showroom that looks way too big when you get it home. Measure and test before you buy. Use sheets of newspaper to mark out floor area that will be covered. Bring in old chairs and cover them with sheets to get a feel for height.

A consultation with an interior designer at the early stages can save you a lot in the long run. Here’s three reasons why… Reason 1: An interior designer will help you avoid expensive mistakes. It costs the same amount to get a room right as to get it wrong. And a good

interior designer should be able to work to your budget. Reason 2: An interior designer should have a good network of contacts among tradespeople. So, we can get the work done and we know what's good value. Reason 3: Convenience, your interior designer is also your shopper. We know what's out there and bring it to you. So you don't have to run all over town. So that’s it. With a mix of something you love and lots of checking and double checking you can create a room that you can love for ever and that has lots of personality – a room that’s a worthy setting for lots of finishing touches – finally!

www.pickapro.ie would like to thank interior designers, Form Concepts 087 657 2831, Interiors 1850 331000 and Taylored Interiors 01 2888635 for their advice for this article. To see photos of their work, visit www.pickapro.ie You will also find lots of other home improvement specialists – including builders, architects, painters and landscapers. They trained unbelievably hard for this tournament. They trained five days a week during the evenings and even did sessions at 6.30am before school. They are a credit to themselves and their parents. continue to live securely in their homes with confidence, independence and peace of mind”. The Minister said. “The new Seniors Alert Scheme replaced the Scheme of Community Support for Older People on 24th May 2010. Teen care units ordered to close over safety fears HEALTH watchdogs have ordered the closure of two special care units for disruptive teenagers over safety concerns. The Health Service Executive (HSE) was warned to stop sending youngsters to Ballydowd and

Solas in Palmerstown, Co Dublin, until they were overhauled. Inspectors from the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) reported both premises were unsuitable, inadequate and unsafe for providing

care to children. “The inspectorate requires that the HSE cease the use of both Ballydowd and Solas as a special care facility with immediate effect and not place children in either until the buildings

and campus are brought up to standard and their safety is assured,” the report added. The HSE first proposed to close Ballydowd as far back as November last year after a damning report by

Receiver appointed to apartment complex A receiver has been appointed to the Priory Hall Apartment complex in North Dublin. Dublin City Council recently acquired 27 units in the complex for social and affordable housing. Dublin North East Labour Councillor, Seán Kenny said he was concerned by the fact that there is some unfinished work in the complex. "I'm asking the receiver to issue a statement saying that he will be assessing the unfinished work with a view to completing it, (particularly) in relation to fire safety issues. Mr Kenny also called for the completion of an unfinished road at the complex "which is itself a major road connecting Belmayne with the new Clongriffin Dart station".

HIQA criticised care practices at the unit, which was deemed no longer fit for purpose. However inspectors who visited the facilities, which are on the same site, unannounced in July, found a teenage boy was admitted to Ballydowd as recently as June 30. They stated the environment and physical condition of the accommodation and campus had since deteriorated. Elsewhere three teenage girls remained in Solas, which opened as a temporary unit following a fire in Ballydowd last October. “Overall, inspectors found this unit to be unsuitable for the purpose of providing a good standard of special care,” the report added. The inspectors revealed: - There were 76 instances of physical restraint involving 10 children and 51 of single separation involving nine children since November. - There had been

36 unauthorised absences by eight children, 19 relating to one child and ranged from one to 53 hours. - There had been 36 unauthorised absences by eight children, 19 relating to one child and ranged from one to 53 hours. - Staff went unsupervised and six did not have training in Children First: National Guidelines for the Protection and Welfare of Children. - The quality of files and documents on children were poor. - Disused units open at the rear on Ballydowd contained maintenance equipment, dangerous implements and other objects that posed a safety risk. The HSE revealed Ballydowd will remain open as

an interim measure due to a significant increase in referrals for special care services in 2010. Aidan Waterstone, National Lead for Alternative Care

Services, said the HSE was treating HIQA’s findings as a top priority, adding a full refurbishment programme was under way in both facilities.

Finnegan said that the proposal launched over the weekend by Minister Eamon Ó Cuiv was merely a way of massaging unemployment figures and forcing people into menial work for the

meagre amount they receive in Jobseekers Allowance. Mr. Finnegan said that the fact that the new scheme contained no education or training element tended to confirm the view of many un-

Tourism figures show improvement THE latest figures released by the CSO show that the decline in the number of visitors coming to Ireland from Great Britain, Ireland’s key market, has slowed and is welcomed by Labour Spokesperson on Tourism, Mary Upton TD. Deputy Upton commented: “The number of trips to Ireland by residents of Great Britain in June 2010 was 252,900, a decline of 3% in contrast to June 2009. Although the numbers are down the news is welcome in the light of last month’s reports that visitors had declined by 30%. “However, one must recognise the extent of the battle ahead for Irish tourism. In the past decade the number of visitors from Great Britain in the month of June has always been higher than 252,900 and the 2010 figure represents a ten year low. “On a more positive note, trips from North America and other long haul destinations increased. There has been persistent effort by the tourism sector, frequently with little or no Government support, to stem the haemorrhage of foreign tourists. Much more needs to be done in terms of recovering from the steep decline in tourism activity and its contribution to aiding Ireland’s overall economic recovery. “The Minister

continues to offer no concrete action to help the beleaguered sector. No progress has been made regarding the travel tax, zombie hotels or speeding up the Visa process. We in the Labour Party have laid out our strategy for tourism, ‘Extending the Welcome’, and its importance to the country in terms of jobs and the economy. “Let’s hope that the fall in overseas tourist numbers has been halted and that we can begin to plan for the future of the industry.”

employed people that this was a form of workfare rather than a serious effort to helping people gain new skills or sharpen old ones. “This move once again tries to blame the unemployed for the fact that there are no jobs out there. The vast majority of the 450,000 unemployed people in this country are on the dole queues because of the economic mismanagement of this country by the Fianna Fáil led government. Most of them would willingly take up jobs if they were available but they should not be forced into workfare in order to save the

blushes of Minister Ó Cuiv”, said the Workers’ Party President. Mr. Finnegan said that he was greatly concerned that these schemes might try to replace what had previously been proper jobs with a ‘work for dole’ scheme. Local authorities in particular had shed thousands of part-time jobs and not replaced fulltime staff who might otherwise be doing the type of work these schemes are targeting. “When it comes to jobs and employment government this government is all over the place and is failing utterly to create jobs”, he said.

“It is not clear why we need another series of schemes. The same government which is introducing this workfare has over the last few years cut funds for Community Employment schemes. It makes no sense whatsoever to reinvent these schemes when they already exist. It can only be assumed that the new schemes will be far more coercive and will seek to treat unemployed people as malingerers and a burden on the state instead of productive workers who are denied the chance to reach their potential by a rotten system”, said Mr. Finnegan.

Commercial vehicle tax chaos DUBLIN Mid West representative Eoin

O Broin has criticised a proposal from Min-

ister John Gormley to impose a new tax on

the owners of commercial vehicles and

The Henrys were a huge success at a packed East Wall Community Centre concert. It was part of the Northside Music festival series of concerts.

NCT to collect VRT FROM September 1st, the collection of Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) will be the responsibility of Applus+, the Spanish based company currently administering the National Car Test (NCT). Therefore it will no longer be possible to register a vehicle at a Revenue Vehicle Registration Office (VRO). They will carry out a range of tests to verify the specification of the vehicle being presented matches the original manufacturers specification and that on the V5, to ensure that the correct VRT is being applied. This test will help prevent fraud by identifying the correct specifications and trim levels and thus ensuring the correct VRT being applied. It should also help prevent cloning by verifying all of the paperwork. However, it will not address the issue of write-offs being registered in the state as no mechanical inspection of the vehicle will be carried out. Given the inherent dangers of write-offs, Cartell.ie is calling for all imports to undergo a thorough mechanical inspection. Once a vehicle has entered the state, the owner has 7 days to book it in for an appointment and there are 30 days in total to complete the registration process. The vehicle can be taken to any one of the 22 specialised NCT centres for the test. Once the check has been carried out, payment will be taken by Applus+ on behalf of the Revenue commissioners and

a vehicle registration number will be issued. In 2008, Cartell.ie.ie carried out a study of a sample of 4,479 random vehicles imported to Ireland from the UK between 2001 and 2005. From that sample, it was shown that almost one in ten vehicles imported into Ireland from the UK were previously written off. A Category A, B or C write off, will have the fact that it is a write off documented on the UK logbook or V5. However, this data is not making its way from the UK log book to the Irish log book or vehicle registration document (VRC) and the impact of this, is that Irish drivers are in the dark about the cars’ true history. Cartell.ie called for the government to put better systems in place to help prevent the Irish public from driving these cars. This new system should have given Applus+ the power not to register the Category A and B write offs, as these should never return to the road. Indeed these Category A and B vehicles cannot legally be allowed to be registered in the UK. Furthermore a Category C write off should require an engineer’s inspection before being registered in the state because legally in the UK, a Category C write off requires a Vehicle Identification Check (VIC) before it can be re-registered and taxed. The non documenting of the write off is a crucial step that is being missed on importation. It is still very much a case of buyer beware.

called on local Green Party TD Paul Gogarty to justify the proposal. The The tax would penalise licence holders who use commercially registered vehicles for purposes other than work. O Broin said: “The Government have once again demonstrated their ability to invent new ways to take money off people. There is absolutely no justification for this proposed tax, particularly in the current economic climate. “Many small business people and indeed employees use commercial vehicles for purposes other than work. In many instances a commercial vehicle is the only means of transport that people have. “The proposal announced today by Minister Gormley, and supported by his Green Party TDs is targeting many small businesses and working people who are already struggling to make ends meet. "The government is clearly out of touch with the daily reality for business people and their employees. I am calling on Paul Gogarty TD to explain to the people of Lucan, Clondalkin, Plamerstown, Rathcoole and Saggart why they should have to pay such a tax. "For our part Sinn Fein are opposed to this crazy proposal as we are to the other new taxes, such as the water charges and ESB price hike, being introduced by the Green Party and their Fianna Fail partners in government.” Mary Lou McDonald has described the Green’s handling of the public response to his department’s commercial car tax circulation as farcical. “The Green’s have clearly adopted Fianna Fáil’s ‘nod & a wink’ culture. Rather than using his Ministerial office to amend or replace this flawed piece of legislation Minister Gormley has instead advocated that drivers lie in their declaration

in the hope that the Gardaí use their discretion when enforcing the law. The declaration is flawed and the government’s solution to the problem is dishonest. Where else in the world would a government Minister

publicly state that if you tax your car for commercial purposes you must sign a legal declaration stating that you will not use the vehicle ‘for social, domestic or pleasure purposes’ and then in the same breath say Gardaí will use their

discretion when enforcing. What the Minister should be doing is amending the wording of the declaration to enable drivers of commercially registered vehicles to drop their kids to schools in the morning without fear of prosecution.”

But from the start, I have said that the methods and techniques and ways of thinking that I have shared with you here can benefit everyone whether they are in crisis or doing very well thank you. However, it is more often in a time of crisis that people look for and most need some help in getting through an experience that is difficult, unpleasant and possibly new and confusing to them. Unfortunately, with the current economic downturn, property price corrections, unemployment and the credit crunch surrounding us and coming at us from all angles, we have all found ourselves in changed circumstances. So now we have a situation that is common to pretty much everyone and a real life example of where we can all use the material that I have been sharing here. Throughout this series I have been talking about feeling better. The daily news this year would hardly help anyone to feel better. There is such a sensational focus on bad news. And bad news affects everyone negatively. And yet, if you are to be at your best, you need to be feeling good! Then you are giving yourelf the best chance to succeed. So in this issue of The Local News I am going to start with this live situation and apply what I have been writing to surviving this credit crunch/economic crisis/ recession. We cannot always control what thoughts come into our head or are put into it from outside. But we CAN decide whether or not to continue thinking them. And, most of the time, we CAN actually decide what to think about or focus on. And this is going to be our first step in getting in good shape to succeed in this difficult period. I have always talked about goals and targets and they are what determine our mood, give us motivation and energy. Things we need in difficult times. Most people being affected by all of this gloomy news are undoubtedly focussed on all of the negative aspects, this is what they are thinking about and this is why they are feeling down, worried, demotivated and scared. So, before the next article I want you to start to take control of what you think about and focus on the majority of the time. I want you to start to focus on your goal. And if you are wondering what that goal is, what I want you to begin focussing on is where you want to be and what you want to be doing when this recession is over. There is not much that most of us can do about what is happening to the economy in general right now. So there is no point in focussing on and worrying about the general situation. But there is a lot you can do about your own future. If you do not have a destination, you just wander and drift and never get anywhere. If you have a destination, goal or target then you can decide your route and begin your journey there. We will start doing that in the next issue. See you then. THE summer has gone and the harsh thoughts of going back to school are prevalent in the minds of all the young kids the dreaded homework, early mornings are things all young kids hate. Headlice is very common in young children particularly between ages 4-11

years and it often occurs when kids return to school as they are in close contact with lots of others so the Headlice infection can easily spread. Many parents feel embarrassed that their kids have Headlice but they should not as it is very easily treated. The best way to

check for Headlice in your child is with a fine tooth comb over a white piece of paper. The hair should be damp to make the combing process easier and less painful. Such a check should be carried out regularly say once a week particularly behind the ears and around the nape of

the neck. The presence of live lice will require a treatment, please ask your pharmacist to recommend a specific product for your child. All the products offer different advantages for different people for example certain products are more suitable for asthmatic patients or people with sensitive skin. Examples of products available at McKee Pharmacy are Derbac M, Lyclear, and Hedrin. As prevention is the best option there are numerous Headlice repellent sprays available and the use of Tea Tree shampoo is also helpful as a natural repellent. Another common childhood complaint is that of the Threadworm. Usu-

ally parents will notice first signs of the child scratching his or her bottom, this is a classic symptom of the threadworm as it is caused by an allergic reaction to the substances in and around the worms eggs laid around the anus. Itching is generally worse at night. Persistent scratching can lead to secondary infections which may require referral to a doctor so it is important to identify the presence of an infection sooner rather than later. The appearance of cream coloured thread like objects in the faeces is not uncommon. Parents should remember to treat all members of the family at the same time even if only one person has symptoms. It

s important to cut fingernails short so as to avoid tearing skin but also to prevent the transmission of eggs. Hands should be washed before eating and also showering before bed and in the morning to wash away any eggs will help too. Vermox liquid or Vermox tablets are available at McKee Pharmacy and can be given to children from the age of 2 years upwards, so please contact Fiona on 8361203 or call in if a treatment is required. In my next article I will be discussing Asthma. Contact Fiona in McKee Pharmacy, 2 McKee Road, Finglas to discuss all your families health needs. Tel 836 1203.

Call for ‘morning-after pill’ to be available over the counter PHARMACISTS are renewing calls for the 'morning-after pill' to be available over the counter. At present, women who wish to take emergency hormonal contraception require a prescription from a doctor. The Irish Pharmacy Union (IPU) said its members have the skills to dispense such drugs and provide appropriate advice and counselling to patients. "It is important that patients get timely access to

"should never be the only form of contraception used" and said pharmacists

emergency hormonal contraception and many often find it difficult to get a prescription at the weekend," said spokesperson Kathy Maher, a pharmacist in Co Meath. "Pharmacists sh-

ould be able to provide such a service and this could be done with appropriate advice, counselling and within agreed protocols." Ms Maher emphasised that the morning-after pill

could also refer patients back to their GP where appropriate. The IPU repre-

sents around 1,800 community pharmacists across the country.

Top 10 tips for getting ready for preschool

With the introduction of the ECCE scheme (Early Childhood Care & Education) more children than ever will start preschool shortly. Irene Gunning, CEO of Irish Preschool Play Association (IPPA) which represents 50,000 families nationwide – nearly a quarter of whom are in Dublin through its membership of crèches, preschools, after school and parent & toddler groups, has the following tips to get the children and the parents off to the best possible start. The majority of parents already have their child’s name down on their chosen local preschool, but for those who don’t there is still time to contact their local preschools and check availability. Parents should visit the preschool and chat to the manager about how it operates, start time, finish times, lunch policy, the typical daily routine of children and whether the service is part of the ECCE scheme and if there are optional extras to

consider. A shortcut to consider is to check in with your local county childcare committee who can give you a list of the ECCE registered preschools in the area and details about the ECCE scheme and answers to frequently asked questions are up on the website of the Office of the Minister for Children & Youth Affairs www.omc.ie Once the place is booked most preschool managers will give you an induction letter or talk through the practical ways to get your child off to the best start and what to expect from day one. Preschool teachers are ready for the settling in phase and are totally committed to ensuring that the child is comfortable and happy from the start. You will see that the preschool curriculum is a gentle stepping stone onto the education ladder, where children meet and make new friends, learn the importance of turn taking and sharing and most impor-

tantly build in their own confidence and life skills through a child centred quality programme of activity and play. In the meantime, here are some practical tips to calm the nerves: Dig out that induction letter you got from your preschool manager with details about school bags, timetable, healthy lunches etc. and make sure you are organised in advance, so that you are not unduly stressed on the first few days. Will you walk or drive – decide in advance? Make sure the school-bag and lunch box you choose are easy to manage and think about the best clothes for your child to wear. That doesn’t mean their Sunday best. It means clothes your child can play in, without fear of paint splashes and clothes that are easy to manage when visiting the toilet. Talk to your child about preschool but resist the temptation of hyping it up too much as

the child might be totally underwhelmed with the reality. Refer to the teachers – who you’ve most likely already met - by their first names and tell your child about the other children, the toys, the painting, the play dough and the kind of activities you know that will interest them. Many children have already visited the preschool in advance of term start. If not, you could ask a child you know in the neighbourhood who has attended the group to give your child a rundown on what it’s like. Focusing on the positive aspects of course! In the week before start day explain to your child that you or another loved one will be dropping and collecting them from preschool and how that will work. Tell your child the two things you, or your minder, will do while they are at preschool to give the child a sense of the short time involved, like going to the bank and preparing lunch. It’s not too long and not long too short – in fact just enough time to have fun before being collected! On reaching the door each morning, smile and treat teacher like a friend. Relax and don’t fuss and let your child know that you’re confident that they can manage. Remember that your child is alert to the

emotional messages you send out, so don’t panic and don’t let the child see you crying. If they do, explain that you are crying because this is a happy day. If your child is fine going in on the first day, just walk away and don’t look for problems where none exist. The majority of children will sail in, no problem. Treat yourself to a cup of coffee and a little treat – this is a big day for you too! If your child does cry going in, follow the lead of the teacher. Often children who come in the door crying are okay and laughing five minutes later. Rest assured that if your child is not settling the teacher will contact you. Make sure to return for pick up on time as children can fret when they see other children leave before them. Don’t expect the teacher to give you detailed feedback in the first two

from the Irish Preschool Play Association weeks when the whole group is really settling in. If there is any problem teacher will let you know, otherwise no news is good news. After the session, ask your child about the sand, the books, the toys

and the other children. If your questions are specific, you’ll get more information. Finally, make sure you are not under time constraints in the first week of preschool. You’ve got to be pre-

pared to stay and help them settle in – so make sure you have that flexibility. It is important that your child doesn’t feel pressurised or hurried.

the college year as a well a deposit which usually amounts to one month’s rent. The most common problems that arise for students are over repairs and the standard of accommodation and the non-return of rent deposits at the end of the tenancy. Exercising caution at the beginning can help to avert these common problems. Aideen Hayden, Chairperson of Threshold, said: "Following the release of CAO thirdlevel offers, many college-goers are presently seeking private rented accommodation. It can be an anxious time for both parents and students who may feel under pressure to take the first place they see. Our advice is not to panic as it is a renter’s market and students have more choice than ever before. "Every year Threshold gets calls from parents and students who experience problems because they have booked accommodation over the phone without viewing it – you need to exercise the same caution in renting accommodation as you would in accessing any other service. It is worthwhile to shop around and view a number of properties before making a decision on where to rent and what to pay". "Our experience is that a poor decision made at the beginning of the year can lead to problems later. It is crucial to view a property thoroughly to avoid problems such as dampness and poor heating during the winter months. It is also important to deal with a reputable landlord or agent to ensure that you will not be at a financial loss later. Landlords are legally obliged to provide rent books, or receipts if you have a lease, and if this is not the case then you can expect problems down the line. Local Threshold offices and college accommodation offi-

cers will be aware of landlords who regularly rent to students and it is worth getting in touch to find out more. " “Threshold is aware of apartment scams involving people pretending to be landlords. Be partic-

ularly vigilant if a prospective landlord is looking for a cash payment in advance. Never hand cash to someone in the street and always meet the landlord in the property. Pay the deposit and first month’s rent by

cheque or bank draft and get the landlord’s bank details for future payments. With so many students seeking accommodation at this time, families must take precautions to avoid bogus landlords".

"We advise every student and parent seeking rented accommodation to review the practical advice on the Threshold website and to contact their nearest Threshold office if they have any questions.”

Ireland takes home the Bronze Medal A near capacity crowd was on hand last week at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada for the 9th annual World Hip Hop Dance Championship Finals. Culminating a week of competition that brought together the largest number of street dance crews (198) representing the largest number of nations (28) in the event’s history, the top crews in Junior (8-12), Varsity (13-17) and Adult (18 +) divisions competed for gold, silver and bronze medals. Japan took home the Gold in the Junior Division followed in 2nd by Canada and Lil Hustlers representing Ireland taking the bronze Medal. Lil Hustlers are a Hip Hop Dance Crew from Streets Ahead Dance and Performing Arts in Santry Dublin. The Crew has 8 members aged 8 to 12yrs, they are Gwen McCarthy (Glasnevin), Chloe North (Swords), Zacc Milne (Glasnevin), Jake Conway Byrne (Finglas), Amy Delaney (Finglas), Chloe Simpson (Finglas), Roger Bejenaru (Malahide Road) and Lauryn Masterson (Navan). The team have been training hard since they qualified for the world championships back in March, ‘It has been hard going for them, they have had to train at least 5 hours each week and all their spare time has been spent trying to fundraise the €1600 needed per dancer to represent their country at world level’ said their coach Taz aka Tara Treacy. ‘Unfortunately, Hip Hop dance although one of the most popular young peoples activities, doesn’t receive any funding in Ireland’. To secure their bronze medal, first Lil Hustlers had to qualify in the preliminary stages of the competition. This seen them up against 25 teams from all over the world, and they qualified for the semi final in 7th position. The very next day saw them compete against 12 teams and an outstanding performance saw them jump an amazing 6 positions to qualify for the World Finals in 1st position. The final was intense, and outstanding performances from the 6 other nations meant the scores were extremely close. Lil Hustlers were delighted to pick up the bronze medal and bring it home to Ireland. Their coach Taz commented ‘It was an emotional final and to see them on the platform with their medals while the Tri- Colour was raised behind them made me so proud that all their hard work had paid off.’

Action needed on back to school costs LABOUR Councillor Henry Upton has said the crippling costs faced by families as children return to school over the coming days will place an unprecedented pressure on many families. “With more and more and more people now out of work, and many others on reduced incomes, and already under severe financial pressure, this is a problem that the Minister for Education Mary Coughlan needs to take by the scruff of the neck. “Labour has previously published the findings of research indicating that it can cost as much as €1200 per child to cover the costs of uniforms, books, voluntary contributions, stationery etc. The fact of the matter is that with a bit of lateral thinking on the part of the Minister and a bit of political will, many of these costs could be reduced

dramatically. “For instance, many schools require students to wear a specialised uniform which can prove to be particularly expensive when compared to those available in the chain stores. “Minister Coughlan needs to put much greater pressure on schools in this regard. I don’t accept the view that schools are entirely independent and that the Minister is powerless to act. At the very least she should publish a set of guidelines for schools in this regard, to ensure that all families are given the option of purchasing the less expensive uniforms. “In addition schools should operate guidelines on the type of sports gear required to avoid pressures on parents to purchase designer labels. The Department of Social and Family Affairs and the Department of

Education and Science should assist schools in formulating these guidelines. 'The Minister must also put greater pressure on schools to operate a book rental scheme. These schemes are operating in many if not most schools around the country, but there are still many where they are not. Book rental schemes can save families hundreds of euro and the Minister must incentivise schools to put such arrangements in place. “I also believe that there should be an up-to-date review of the Aid for School Books Grant Scheme to take account of changing prices and changes in the use of textbooks and that the National Council for Curriculum Assessment should consider the cost of school books when drawing up new or amending existing curricula. “The cost of run-

ning a school is all too often being passed on directly to parents in the form of voluntary contributions and various administration fees, but this cost could be reduced if schools could in some way pool their purchasing power. “An Garda Siochana secures substantial savings from service providers like the ESB by having one account that covers all stations. There is no reason that the Dept of Education could not negotiate such a deal for our schools. Indeed there is no reason a similar arrangement could not be put in place for the providers of other goods and services such as cleaning and stationery. “Finally, as highlighted by the Labour Party, the arrangements in place in the HSE for processing applications for the Back-To-School Allowance have proven

to be completely inadequate. A massive backlog has built up and it is clear that thousands of fami-

lies who are entitled to receive payment under the scheme will not receive it in time. The response

this week where the HSE has reallocated staff to speed up the processing of these applications is too

little too late, and these steps should have

been

taken

weeks ago.”

Time to change Leaving Cert Sinn Féin Deputy Leader Mary Lou McDonald has congratulated Leaving Cert students receiving their exam results and noted the time has now come to make progressive changes to the Leaving Certificate education cycle. “I wish to congratulate all students who sat their Leaving Cert this year and received their results. This is an exciting day for most but for those who are disappointed with their results it is important to stress that they have options. So much importance is put on today’s results and particularly now in the context of the current recession. But in the big picture of life this is just one milestone and if results received today are not what some students hoped for they have options in an alternative course or college or indeed repeating the Leaving Cert exams next year. “Education Minister Mary Coughlan’s response to the obvious shortfalls of the Leaving Cert course, particularly the declining standard in math’s results with over 4,000 students failing the exam, has been disappointing. The sciences results are also an important issue of concern with an 8% failure rate in chemistry, 2,000 pupils failed biology and physics results have declined for the second year in a row. The Ministers indication today that bonus points for Leaving Cert math’s could be introduced by 2012 does not address the fundamental weakness of the current math’s and sciences Leaving Cert cycle. This is not simply a case of students needing an incentive to work harder, the fact is the current Leaving Cert cycle not fit for purpose. In some schools across the city and country Honour’s Leaving Cert math’s take-up is as low as 10%. How can we build a ‘knowledge economy’ on such a shaky foundation? “Society in the 21st Century needs thinkers and doers. Everyone agrees that Leaving Cert is very much about rote learning with little emphasis on practical tasks and problem solving. We need fundamental reform of how critical subjects, including languages, are delivered and exams are structured, and we need a more holistic approach to math’s and sciences with better teaching supports for second level teachers.”

It’s the best thing that ever happened to me”. Going back to education has opened up a new world to me and new opportunities and new people.’

JOHN:* “I just couldn’t handle exams at all. It was a great shame really because if I had the Inter Cert leaving school, life would have been much easier,” ANITA:* “You don’t realise until you get older the things you missed out on. I mean you’re not going to go anywhere in life without an education. There’s no way my daughter will leave school early. She won’t be like me leaving at 12,”

Great value and excellent food in Finglas LAST Sunday after a hectic day of family commitments and outdoor activities I decided to pay a visit to the Rose Garden Chinese Restaurant in Finglas Village. Its actually located on top of the Bottom of the Hill Pub in Finglas Village. I had driven past on several occasions and noticed that they have an a fantastic deal on at the moment. The deal itself is all you can eat from a set menu for the terrific price of only €9.90 .The offer runs from Sunday to Thursday. There is also a special deal on for Friday & Saturday evenings which is an early bird special for only €13.90. I decided that there was no time like the present to try the restaurant as I was decidedly peckish, as too was my other half. First of all there is generous parking

outside which is a definite plus. The restaurant itself is quite large and comfortable with a warm welcoming atmosphere. The predominant colours in terms of decor are reds and greens which complement the very comfortable leather upholstered chairs and my particular favourite - long sofas. The waitresses were very nice and welcoming and explained to us that we

could order whatever we wanted on the menu and when finished could order more. So to the main event the food! Myself and my companion tried a selection of starters, which all arrived together and obviously are cooked freshly to order. We had spring rolls, chicken rolls, barbecue spare ribs, chicken satay and there were dips and sauces to accompany them all. Let’s just say the plates

were empty when being removed from the table. We found the food fresh tasty and good quality. There was quite a few in the restaurant, but this did not affect service. We relaxed and enjoyed our wine and beer while deciding on main courses. After much debate we settled on chicken curry, beef with black bean sauce, beef with satay sauce and sweet and sour sauce

and to accompany this little lot we had fried rice and chips. There is quite a good selection of drinks available from decent wines to beers but you will definitely need a drink to wash down all this delicious food. The pleasant waitress brought the rest of our not inconsiderable meal served with a nice gentle manner. In fact there is a very laidback vibe in the restaurant and we felt under no pressure to eat up and go which can be the case with some of the ‘all you can eat’ places. Believe it or not empty plates were yet again the order of the day. The food was well presented and there was good sized portions of it. The vegetables were really fresh and crisp and the meat itself was tender so the

quality was really excellent. Dessert was simply not an option as we simply could not eat any more. I can honestly say as did my companion, that we really enjoyed our visit to The

Rose Garden and we will be back and will have no hesitation in recommending the restaurant. This is an ideal place to bring a few friends to enjoy good food at a great price and

you will definitely be back as will we.
