WINS GOLD

By Catherine Blake Move over Imelda May, a 14- year-old girl has become the new toast of the Liberties, scooping a gold medal at the World Kick Boxing championship in Serbia recently. SHANNON McGee, nicknamed, The Liberty Belle, fought of stiff competition from Italy, Ukraine and Cork to bag the gold at the WAKO World Kick boxing championships- the largest championship of its kind in the world, involving 53 countries world wide. A former majorette and the youngest of seven siblings, Shannon McGee, started kickboxing in 2008 at the tender age of 12 at The Liberties Kickboxing Academy For Kids (Fuscos Gym). The talented teenager was instantly bitten by the boxing bug and duly committed herself to three rigorous training sessions per week. Shannon’s outstanding dedication quickly paid off and she competed for the first time nationally in February 2009, scooping the All Ireland Mugendo junior championship title.

Hot on the heels of this stunning debut success, she entered the AKAI/Kickboxing Ireland Leinster championships, where she wowed the judges by effortlessly disposing of all other would-be contenders to become Leinster champion . Next, Shannon set her sights on the All Ireland, AKAI/ kickboxing Ireland, where her impressive performance quickly secured her place as the youngest member of The Irish Kickboxing Team. As part of the National team, Shannon subsequently traveled to Croatia in September 2009, and duly went

on to win a sliver medal, paving the way for this years ultimate triumph. “There is no better feeling than winning that gold,” Shannon told The Local News. “ After I won the bronze I just thought that’s it, I’m going all the way for gold next.” Shannon faced a competitor from Italy for the bronze medal; after successfully seeing her off; she then met a Ukrainian opponent to vie for the silver. Finally the Liberty Belle came up against a girl from Cork (no less) in the final, to secure the gold.” “The atmosphere was amazing, there was about 70

people over from Ireland cheering and going ballistic,” enthused Shannon. “Overall it was a fantastic experience and I made loads of new friends especially from the USA and Turkey. “When I got back to Dublin airport, I was greeted by loads of my extended family and friends who welcomed me with flags and banners.” At school on Monday morning, Shannon was also greeted by deafening cheers by fellow pupils and teachers who queued up to congratulate her. “ I was scarlet with all the cheering,” the modest Shannon laughs, “but it was great to see how excited people were to see my medal and trophy.” Of course the life of a champion is never easy and after a short break, Shannon is back at the gym with coach, Christopher Stringer, preparing for her next fight in Sligo on the October 17th. “ We were over the moon, when she won,” Christopher told The Local News. “Our aim was to qualify and get a bronze medal, then when she got the bronze, I just told her to go all the way. We are all so proud of he, but its back to full on training now to prepare for next year’s fighting season.” catherine@localnews.ie

Local GAA club scoops funding grant By Catherine Blake A LOCAL GAA club was awarded with a grant of €2,000 at a recent celebrity studded ceremony. St James Gaels GAA club secured the coveted funding in the Dublin Bus event attended by Sunderland AFC Chairman Neil

Quinn, and wellknown television personality Mary Kenny. Although, a relatively new club, founded in 1994 – St James Gaels is in fact an amalgamation of two more historic clubs, An Caisleán and Guinness GAA. Both of these clubs had been in existence for

many years but were struggling due to the increasing age profile within their respective base areas. Currently the club caters for both boys and girls, aged between 5 and 18 and has become an integral part of the fabric of this local community.

Cherly Dunne is co-ordinator of the club It means a lot to us to get this grant,” Ms Dunne told The Local News. “We are a local GAA Club struggling year after year to develop our juvenile section for girls and boys with limited funds. “To date we have

relied mainly on parents and ourselves for funds, but things are tight now.” She added: “Sadly the area we live in has become the focus of a drug-related gang war which has intensified over the past few years which makes it all the more important to get these children, boys and girls, involved in sport, playing, coaching, refereeing and so on. “To do this, we need to buy new equipment and replace as needed, jerseys for new teams and replace worn out ones, and funding to run courses and activities for the children, teenagers and adults in the club.” Currently the club recieve €1,000 from Dublin City Council, in addition to membership fees. Last year St James Gaels were awarded €5,000 from Tesco for the development of the girl’s facilities at the club. ”All of our resources are used to fund club activities and all of our coaches, mentors etc are volunteers within the Community,” continued Ms Dunne. “Help with funding frees coaches from the concern of fund raising and allows them to concentrate on prioritising sport in thecommunity.”

The Dublin Property Specialists

For advice on property sales and lettings in the Dublin area prospective vendors and landlords are well advised to phone Wilson Moore Estate & Letting Agents the recognized Dublin property specialists. “Vendors are keen to appoint a company that will supply them with an excellent service as it’s what people should expect and deserve nowadays in these difficult economic times” says Christina Wilson. “This period of uncertainty is continuing and the property market is suffering because of this” comments Patrick Leonard the Sales Director of Wilson Moore. “However we have noticed in recent times that purchasers who up until now have been reluctant to view, make offers or agree to purchase are now becoming more active and seem keen to commit to buy in the near future” he adds. Christina continues by saying “there is fantastic value available at the moment and anyone considering trading up to their perfect area or dream home may never get a better opportunity to

do so !” Likewise people who are currently renting should think about owning their own home instead as Patrick explains “when you are paying rent you are in fact paying a mortgage it’s just not your own!”. First Time Buyers should seriously think about entering the market at the present time and check out the mortgage options which are currently available. The letting market is not easy at the moment but Wilson Moore are still looking to list suitable properties for quality tenants on their books. Any landlord who has a property which is vacant at the moment should phone them with the details as soon as possible. Wilson Moore’s customer friendly offices are open from 9.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. Monday to Friday and Saturday 10.00 a.m. to 12.00 noon. If you have any queries about selling , letting , buying or renting in the Dublin area then contact them on 1890 80 80 80 for an appointment.

In these recessionary times, locating the best bargains has become somewhat a national obsession! Rest assured however, you will find no better value than at The Liberty Market, Meath street. Boasting a virtual treasure trove of high fashion, top brand make up and household goods, the Market is Dublin’s best kept secret! Undoubtedly The liberty Market is a bargain hunters paradise, however it is so much more too- serving as the dynamic social hub of the area for over thirty six years! In fact, the volume of bargains you will find here, can be matched only by the volume of lively banter among customers and traders alike. As I wield my camera to take a picture of one stall-holder, Larry Murphy, from the wool shop (the only wool shop for miles, I’m assured)- one of his regular customer’s quips, “Ah don’t photograph him, he’s so ugly he’ll break the lens.” This was met by an eruption of laughter by all in earshot . “ Well you wouldn’t want to be sensitive around here love,” Larry laughs. And it’s clear, this is all just part of the regular repartee here at the market. Milling around the treasure trove that is The Liberty Market, the shopper is treated to a myriad of products including plants, clothes, CD’s, high end makeup, designer hand bags and angel crystals to name but a few. The first customer I bump into is Kay Kavanagh, from Ballyfermot, “ I come here shopping every week because its cheaper and the people are just lovely, I also have relations living near by and we meet up here- it’s very sociable like that.” Next, I meet mother and daughter team, Betty Donoghue and Catherine Mulraney from Rialto. “Ive been coming here for years for the bargains,” said Betty. “ I used to bring her with me (pointing at Catherine) when she was small. Catherine adds: “ I was very young the first time I was brought here, but I remember it vividly, you could say it’s a family tradition at this stage, I love it here.” Patricia Dwyer grew up in The Liberties but is now living in Inchicore, “ I come here because I really like the what’s on offer, its both good value and quality, Catherine ( the Stall owner) is great, if I bring an outfit home and find out it doesn’t really suit me, she will change it, no problem.”

Patty McGuinness from Crumlin adds: “Ah it’s great value here, they always give us bargains and most of the stuff here is half the price of the high street.” Breeda Murphy from Tallaght quipped:“I come here every Friday morning, the clothes are as good if not better than you’d find in the shops in town and they have unusual stuff too. The price is about 50% less than you’d pay anywhere else, I love it for clothes and atmosphere too, I’d recommend it to anyone.” Another mother and daughter duo, Christine Byrne and Theresa Farrell, tell me they’ve been coming here for ‘Donkeys years’. “I know for a fact that it’s cheaper here than anywhere else,” says Christine. “My mother used to bring me here for the bargains and then we’d go to the grotto to light a candle afterwards.” adds Theresa. Angela Kennedy from Crumlin tells me: “I’ve been coming here religiously for thirty years, Catherine( stall owner) has a great personality, and a great range of bags. She will even replace your bag if anything happens it. I bought a bag here last year and when I went to Puerto Rico on holidays, everyone on the plane was asking me, where did I get the bag? Bags like these are colossal prices in other shops in town but not here.” Teresa Fay made the journey all the way Wexford with the sole purpose of shopping at the market. “I was born in the liberties so I’ve been coming here since I was a child. Every body is so friendly here, in fact I met my friend Anne O’ Reilly here about 15 years ago when I was shopping and we’ve been friends ever since.” Anne O Reilly traveled from Naas, “it’s a big day out for myself and Teresa to come here. we catch up on the gossip and bag some great deals in the process. The make up here in particular is great brand quality and value.” So what are you waiting for?.. Defy that recessionary pinch, and make The Liberty Market your first port of call.

THE Government is to extend the Electricity Allowance to cover the cost of the 5% Public Service Obligation (“PSO”) levy on domestic electricity use with immediate effect. Welcoming the decision Chris Andrews TD. said: “The Electricity Allowance, which is under the control of the Department of Social Protection’s Household Benefits Package, is being in-

creased immediately to cover the levy being applied to household electricity use. The cost of the PSO levy to domestic electricity customers is €2.73 a month, or €3.10 including VAT.” The Electricity Allowance is currently administered to 340,000 customers at an annual cost of €184 million. Job security fears grow THE National Workplace Survey findings today that 33% feel that their job security has decreased since 2008 mirrors a recent survey of 781 Irish employees by investment company, AXA Financial. The AXA Financial study found that almost a third (32%) of Irish workers are worried or have some concerns about retaining their jobs. The most worried are those aged 35-44 with 39% expressing at least some concerns about job security. Women of all ages (34%) appear slightly more vulnerable about their job secu-

rity than men (30%). The survey which covered 1,000 consumers in total across the country was conducted for AXA Financial by Irish market research company, iReach in mid August. The jobs question related to those in employment or 781 respondents. "The positive finding is that the majority of people or 68% remain reasonably confident about their job security," commented David Walls, Director, AXA Financial. Bus stop IDs mean improved access for passengers AS PART of Dublin Bus’ Accessibility Programme, 2,700 new Bus Stop IDs will be erected on Dublin Bus stops across the Greater Dublin Area. The new bus number identification system will help customers with a vision impairment to fully identify a Dublin Bus stop and its exact number. These new Bus Stop IDs include a black vertical number plate which will be installed onto the bus pole at 1400mm above footpath level. The stop number will be printed in both large font and in Braille on the plate. The project will not only make bus stop numbers more legible for customers with a vision impairment, but will also ensure that Real Time Passenger Information (RTPI) will be

accessible for all. When implemented next year, customers will be able to ascertain RTPI via text message, or www.dublinbus.ie and at bus stops. In order to access this service online or via text, customers enter the bus stop number which they wish to travel from. They will then be issued with the routes that service that stop and when the next bus on each route will arrive. The new IDs will ensure that all customers can access this service. As part of its commitment to providing a service which is accessible to all, Dublin Bus also runs a Travel Assistance Scheme. This free service provides individuals with reduced mobility, sensory impairments or

learning disabilities with practical advice on using Dublin Bus, DART and Luas services. A full-time Dublin Bus Travel Assistant consults with bus customers and designs and tailors a travel plan for each individual, collecting them from home and accompanying the individual for the first few times that they use the service, ultimately leading to independent travel for the customer. Currently, 88% of the Dublin Bus fleet is low floor wheelchair accessible and it is expected that the total fleet will be accessible by 2012. 70% of all Dublin Bus routes are accessible, while 50% of Dublin Bus stops have been installed with low floor accessible kerbing.

Beware when buying a used car FOLLOWING on from RTE's The Consumer Show which aired last night, the SIMI is reiterating the need for consumers to be extremely careful when they are purchasing a used car. Last night's programme highlighted the awful consequences of not undertaking a number of key checks when it comes to buying a used car. In both case studies, the aggrieved consumers had either purchased their car from a private seller or a non SIMI dealer, which meant that redress was not an easy option even in the light of the major issues that were uncovered about their car. If either the written-off car or the car with outstanding finance was purchased from an SIMI dealer, the responsibility would have been on the dealer to clarify these issues in advance of offering the car for sale, and in the event they failed to do so, the customer would have been entitled to redress from the dealer. In the event that the customer had experienced difficulty in this regard, they can avail of the Society's Consumer Complaints Service which is

free of charge to consumers and whose decisions are binding on the SIMI member garage. Alan Nolan, Director General of SIMI commented, “The SIMI has long highlighted the importance of getting a full history check on a used car. Our Car History Check service was setup for SIMI members to establish if the car has outstanding finance, has been imported from the UK, with full UK history including previous mileage information and if the car was ever used as a taxi. Some write-off information is available from the Department of Transport but very little data is available from insurance companies here. In the UK, they have a very effective system aimed at informing the consumer on the degree of damage that was done to a car from 'Category A' (total write off and the car should be scrapped) to 'Category D' (the insurance company deemed the repair of the vehicle too costly relative to the value of the car). In Ireland, there is no such system and we are only allowed to know

Irish singles love or money? Irish singles are more concerned with the state of their hearts than the state of their wallets, according to a recent survey conducted by Ireland's largest online dating site, AnotherFriend.com. When asked if they would date someone “from the opposite end of the financial spectrum”, an impressive 63% of AnotherFriend.com members said “yes”.

which cars should have been scrapped. Much more information on damaged cars needs to be made available by insurance companies to protect car buyers and road users generally.” Nolan continued, “It is imperative that consumers know as much as they can about who they are buying from and as much as they can about the car they are buying. Earlier this year, SIMI established www.beepbeep.ie, a used car website which only carries cars for sale from SIMI member dealers that have been fully Car History checked. This means that if a problem was to arise with the car, the consumer is protected by Consumer Law and in addition, has access to SIMI's free Consumer Complaints service, which aims to help resolve such issue as quickly and effectively as possible. If you are considering buying a used car, make sure to ask your SIMI dealer for a Car History Check certificate which was designed to give you peace of mind that the car you are buying has a clean history based on the available data sources.”

However, when the results are broken down by gender, it is clear that men and women's opinions differ greatly. While 74% of men would be happy to date someone in a different financial situation, just 50% of women said the same. Women are evidently much more concerned with the contents of their partner's bank account. 23% of them gave a definite “no”, in contrast with a mere 12% of men.

Business community calls for immediate action to stem jobs crisis IBEC Dublin, the group that represents business in the region, have said the most recent CSO unemployment statistics highlight the devastating effect of the economic downturn as the region’s unemployment rate hit 11.5%. The group said that the Govern-

ment and its agencies should focus on getting people, particularly graduates, back to work as a matter of priority. Commenting on the Quarterly National Household Survey (QNHS) Q2 2010 statistics released last week, Matt Moran, IBEC

Meath Street.

regional director, said: “The Dublin region has been devastated in the last number of years by job losses, with the unemployment rate having increased from 5% in Q2 2008 to 11.5% in Q2 2010. The Government must act quickly and decisively to avoid

the problems of the late 1980s and early 1990s. Every effort to get people back into work should be supported. “Young people in particular are being hard hit by the lack of jobs, and many are finding emigration to be their only option for finding work. This is a national tragedy that is affecting the whole country. The business community would like to see the Government do everything in its power to keep these talented young individuals in Ireland. “The Government needs to support programmes that place participants in real jobs in the marketplace to enable a meaningful transition back into paid employment once the economy recovers. Existing schemes such as the FÁS work placement

programme should be scaled up and new initiatives, such as a national graduate internship programme, should be created. “The Government needs to remove the barriers that are acting as disincentives to people taking up these places. Currently, graduates taking part in unpaid internships are able to keep their social welfare benefits, but companies are not allowed to offer any additional benefits or payments. We would like to see the Government introduce a national bursary scheme that would allow companies to top-up graduates' social welfare benefits, which would in turn make participation more attractive for graduates. “The Government must also

strengthen job search incentives to encourage people back to work as soon as demand picks up. Benefits should be conditional on par-

ticipation in job search schemes – claimants should be required to show evidence of job search, attend frequent interviews with emp-

loyment counsellors, apply for vacant jobs, comply with other instructions and implement a personal action plan,” concluded Mr Moran.

Bulbs not bonfires EACH year, bonfires cause damage to humans and animals, destroy open spaces and create litter in our communities.

This year South Dublin County Council is asking all communities to get involved in protecting our County.

The Bulbs not Bonfires campaign is part of a strategy to encourage communities to direct material away from

bonfires. Communities who have successfully managed to prevent a bonfire where there was one last year can apply

for the Bulbs for Bonfires scheme and South Dublin County Council will provide daffodil bulbs to plant in their open

spaces. “This is a wonderful way to celebrate Halloween in a positive way in the community – resi-

dent associations and community groups who have prevented damage to their open space will be rewarded and the colourful endorsement of their action will be present for years and years to come “ said Mayor Eamonn Maloney He added “I encourage all communities to get involved in this campaign. Celebrate with flowers in Spring and stop the destruction of our landscape” Resident associations and community groups who are eligible should apply on South Dublin

County Council’s website www.sdcc.ie or contact info@sdublincoco.ie. Other initiatives arranged by South Dublin County Council to prevent bonfires include; Organised WEEE collections in many areas throughout the County, Arranged free access to the Civic Amenity, Ballymount for South Dublin County Council customers with their waste charges card on Saturday 30th October. Ongoing enforcement of anti litter and dumping legislation.

Team, Bluebell Addiction Advisory Group and the Canal Communities Local Drugs Task Force and together with their local football club St Patrick’s Athletic FC they will be working to encourage young people to lead healthy and active lifestyles. A five week drug education program and a five week soccer skills coaching program will be run in tandem at four selected schools in the area. The students’ involvement in both aspects of the program will be encouraged and at the end all participants will be presented with their “Give Drugs the Boot” certificates and goodie bags at. Give Drugs the Boot began this week with 6th class students from Our Lady of Lourdes School in Inchicore and Saints midfielder James O’Brien was on hand to help kick the programme off. “Having footballers from St Pat’s involved in supporting the programme and endorsing our educational messages to young people will be hugely beneficial”, said Michelle Gallagher from the Inchicore Community Drugs

Team “it’s a different approach and one which we hope will be very successful”. St Pat’s Club Promotions Officer Declan White welcomes the opportunity for the Airtricity league clublub to work with local agencies “highlighting the dangers of all types of drugs to young people needs to be done but it needs to be done in the right way, and the club is delighted to be working alongside trained professionals in this area ”. ÉIRÍGÍ councillor Louise Minihan has slammed proposed legislation that would see begging outlawed on the streets of Dublin. Cllr Minhan has criticised the proposal, as it will do nothing to address the root causes of poverty. Minihan said: This legislation currently before Leinster House, which would see the homeless, the poor, drug addicts and alcoholics arrested for begging, clearly exposes the establishment’s distain for the most disadvantaged in our society, and makes no attempt to address the real issue’s that force people to beg on the streets. ‘ All this legislation will achieve, is the further alienation of the most isolated in our society.’’ Funding and resources must be given to the frontline services working with the marginalised. The state must invest in youth services and education to put a stop to the vicious cycle, and funding for addiction services must be made a priority, to help those who most need it. Minihan continued: ‘A country should be judged on how it treats the most vulnerable in that society. It is clear from this legislation that we live in a profoundly sick society, and must seek an alternative.’

Foxes invade local resident’s garden By Catherine Blake LOCAL woman, Celia McDonald, from Walkinstown

has been left fearing for the lives of her two grandchildren

aged three and seven after four feral foxes set up permanent residence in her back garden.

Ms McDonald’s fear for her grandchildren’s safety was heightened in the wake of the incident

involving two ninemonth old babies, Lola and Isabella Koupparis, who were mauled by a wild fox as they slept in their cots the UK some months ago. Both of the English infants suffered arm injuries and one received serious facial injuries. Ms McDonald told The Local News the family of foxes have set up a den in the garden of her Greenhill’s home and have been living in her bushes for the last four months. “Its terrible, whenever my grandchildren come over,

which is fairly regularly, we have to keep them inside the house,” said Ms McDonald. “We can’t let them out to play because we are afraid the foxes might attack them. It’s the middle of the Summer and its awful not to be able to let them out to run around the garden” She continued: “We rang the Dublin Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (DSPCA) but the lady we were speaking to said foxes are protected wildlife and that we are not allowed to

use traps or poison to get rid of them. So basically we have lost the use of our garden and there seems to be nothing that can be done about it.” Ms McDonald maintains it’s not just her grandchildren’s welfare she is concerned about, but her own and her husbands too. “On one occasion, I walked out into the garden and one of the foxes was quite near me. I waved a stick at it, but it didn’t run away it just stared at me with a menacing look and it sent a chill down my

spine.” The Local News was unable to make contact with the DSPCA but a member of the ISPCA said that the foxes were ‘not’ in fact an endangered species, however laying traps or poison was ‘not permitted under any circumstances’ to get rid of the foxes. “ I’m not sure what we are going to do, we feel a bit like prisoners in our own homes and we don’t know when they will go away, if ever,” said Ms McDonald catherine@localnews.ie

Cathy Kelly returns to Crumlin By Catherine Blake

INTERNATIONALLY renowned author, Cathy Kelly, caused quite a stir in the Ashleaf Shopping Centre, Crumlin, recently where not only did she sign copies of her new book - but also picked out the lucky winner of a brand new car. Brenda Hogan, from Clondalkin was the recipient of the spanking new Ford Focus and expressed her shock and delight when Cathy Kelly rang her personally to tell her the good news. Currently Cathy, whose last book spent a hugely impressive 6 weeks at

the number one spot in Australia last year, is promoting her new book: ‘Home Coming.’ I caught up with Cathy afterwards to talk about the book and ask her about her hugely successful literary career so far. Cathy can you tell us a little about your new book? A: “Well it involves a few interesting women including an 84- year- old returning emigrant, Eleanor who has not set foot in Ireland since leaving for New York at age 11 and a 26 –year-old actress Megan, who has spent most of her life courting the pa-

parazzi. It’s my 12th book to date and I still find the process very exciting.” Did you always want to be a writer? A: “Well as a child I always lived in my imagination. I absolutely loved the book Jane Eyre and got so drawn into her life, but I never thought I had the confidence to do write a book myself. However, I did love writing and when I left school, I studied journalism in Rathmines. After that I went on to work in The Sunday World for a few years, which is where I started to write my first novel. When my first three novels were successful, I gave up my job with The Sunday World as working two jobs meant I had no life! I was a bit selfconscious about my novel writing initially, as people tend to think it is autobiographical. Of course who you are colours your writing but none of what I have

written is autobiographical. Is the life of a novelist a lonely one? A: Well I do miss the banter of the newsroom, being at the heart of breaking news and knowing things before anyone else. But its funny, when I gave up journalism to write full time, I met a whole bevy of new people, such as publishers

from all over the world I and chat to them on the phone quite regularly- so no I wouldn’t say it’s a lonely life. Also the characters you create in a strange way become a type of company too for a writer. What is your normal workday routine when writing a novel? A: I get up at

6.30am read for 20 mins. Then I bring the dog for a walk, after which I bring my 7- year- old twins to school. After that I pretty much write for the day, with a break for lunch and phone calls of course. You know I used to live beside where the Ashleaf Centre is now and I used to walk my dog all around this area.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers? A:Its funny, I get asked this all the time. I’m just back from Australia and there’s a writer there called Courtney Byrne, who in my opinion gave the best advice when he said: what writers need is bum glue! It’s the discipline to sit at the computer and

just get it done. What I would add personally is that you should always write from the heart. You won’t write a good book if you are only focusing on the intellectual level of: Who is my market? Will they like it? The important is just let it flow and be yourself. catherine@localnews.ie

High living costs, below average Government spending on health and education, short holidays and late retirement have kept the UK firmly at the bottom of the list - below countries including Spain, France, Germany and Poland. France has taken the top spot for the second year running. The findings show that people in the UK and Ireland have the poorest quality of life, while the French and Spanish enjoy the highest. The UK pays the highest prices for food] and diesel yet spends below the European average (as a percentage of GDP) on health and education. People in the UK work longer hours, retire later, and receive less annual

to die two years younger than their French counterparts. France, which has topped the index for the second year

running, enjoys the earliest retirement age (joint with Poland), spends the most on healthcare (11% of GDP) and has the longest life expectancy in Europe. Its workers also benefit from 36 days holiday a year - compared with just 28 in the UK - and it comes only behind Spain and Italy for hours of sunshine.

Great value and excellent food LAST Sunday after a hectic day of family commitments and outdoor activities I decided to pay a visit to the Rose Garden Chinese Restaurant on South Circular Road over the Bird Flanagan Pub. I had driven past on several occasions and noticed that they have an a fantastic deal on at the moment. The deal itself is all you can eat from a set menu for the ter-

rific price of only €9.90 .The offer runs from Sunday to Thursday all night, and also Friday and Saturdays until 7.00pm. They describe it as a Special Hong Kong Style Buffet. and there are over 5o dishes to choose from I decided that there was no time like the present to try the restaurant as I was decidedly peckish, as too was my other half. First of all there is gen-

erous parking outside which is a definite plus. The restaurant itself is quite large and comfortable with a warm welcoming atmosphere. The waitresses were very nice and welcoming and explained to us that we could order whatever we wanted on the menu and when finished could order more. So to the main event the food! Myself

and my companion tried a selection of starters, which all arrived together and obviously are cooked freshly to order. We had spring rolls, chicken rolls, barbecue spare ribs, chicken satay and there were dips and sauces to accompany them all. Let’s just say the plates were empty when being removed from the table. We found the food fresh

tasty and good quality. There was quite a few in the restaurant, but this did not affect service. We relaxed and enjoyed our wine and beer while deciding on main courses. After much debate we settled on chicken curry, beef with black bean sauce, beef with satay sauce and sweet and sour sauce and to accompany this little lot we had fried rice and chips. There is quite a good selection of drinks available from

decent wines to beers but you will definitely need a drink to wash down all this delicious food. The pleasant waitress brought the rest of our not inconsiderable meal served with a nice gentle manner. In fact there is a very laidback vibe in the restaurant and we felt under no pressure to eat up and go which can be the case with some of the ‘all you can eat’ places. Believe it or not empty plates were yet again the order of the day.

The food was well presented and there was good sized portions of it. The vegetables were really fresh and crisp and the meat itself was tender so the quality was really excellent. Dessert was simply not an option as we simply could not eat any more. I can honestly say as did my companion, that we really enjoyed our visit to The Rose Garden and we will be back and will have no hesitation in recommending the restaurant.

This is an ideal place to bring a few friends to enjoy good food at a great price and you will definitely be back as will we. Already The Rose Garden are taking bookings for their Christmas and New year evenings. For just €14.90 you can enjoy a full 4 course meal. They also have a takeaway menu with a generous offer of a free starter for anyone spending over €15. See more details in their advertisement on the back page.

Caring for carers THERE’S good news for the 160,000 carers in Ireland in the form of Caring Hands, a new support programme for carers of people with arthritis – the single biggest cause of disability in Ireland. Caring Hands has been developed by Arthritis Ireland in association with Home Instead Senior Care to help carers learn about arthritis, understand more about its symptoms and realise how they can support someone with arthritis to live a full and independent life. By participating in a free half day workshop, carers will learn about arthritis, what the ‘pain cycle’ is and how to break it, the importance of exercise, and the benefits of relaxation methods. They will also receive some practical tips on improving communications between the carer and the person being cared for, as well as information on treatments for arthritis, and how to identify medical priorities. Ultimately, and most importantly they will learn about self management and how to provide help and assistance while enabling the person with arthritis maintain as much mobility, independence and control over their life as possible. Each workshop is delivered by a team comprised of a trained Home Instead employee and a person living with arthritis. This ensures that the knowledge received is truly valid in the home care setting. All participants will receive a full Carers Pack to take home which can be referred to time and again. These workshops will take place in 17 locations nationwide over the next 12 months. Early registration is essential as these workshops are likely to prove extremely popular. According to Grainne O’Leary Head of Education and Support Services

with Arthritis Ireland, many people see their carer’s role as just part of what they do as a wife, husband, brother, sister, son or daughter. However, the value of their contribution should not be underestimated, and the role that they play individually and collectively is significant. “We provide practical information and support to a large number of carers of people with arthritis through the National Arthritis Helpline. Consequently, we identified a need for some additional hands on supports tailored to the specific and particular needs of those caring for people with arthritis. We are delighted to be working in partnership with Home Instead Senior Care to address these needs and to support the work of our national helpline in the provision of support to carers of people with arthritis.” To mark the launch of this pioneering programme, Arthritis Ireland and Home Instead Senior Care have developed an information booklet 'Caring for A Person with Arthritis’ which is available free of charge from Arthritis Ireland. To request a copy of the booklet, to register for the Caring Hands Workshop or to speak to someone about caring for a person with arthritis contact Arthritis Ireland’s National Arthritis Helpline on LoCall 1890 252 846 or visit www.arthritisireland.ie.

A little thank you goes a long way The first ever National Thank You Day will take place this year on Thursday November 25th. Organised by the Irish Hospice Foundation (IHF), the idea is straightforward; it’s an opportunity for people to simply say ‘Thank You’ - to anyone and for anything. The IHF wants to encourage people all over Ireland to take stock and to reach out to the people in their lives who have made a difference. This could be for a significant life event or something as simple as a kind word or act. A big aim of IHF National Thank You Day is to raise funds for the Irish Hospice Foundation so "The Thank You Book" (a gratitude journal for everything that is positive and great in your life!) and a fantastic range of Thank You cards will be launched on Thursday, 21st October. The cards and book are beautiful and full of messages from celebrities such as Gabriel Byrne, Brendan Gleeson, Martin Sheen, Sheila O' Flanagan, Brian Friel, Christy Moore, Sinead O’Connor, Maeve Binchy, Gay Byrne, Fiona Looney, Cecilia Ahern, Niamh Greene, Rita Ann Higgins and Seamus Heaney among many others. Well known producer Bill Hughes came up with the idea for the Thank You campaign and award winning designer Steve Averill has overseen the design. "The Thank You Book" is modelled on the popular gratitude journals in the US. It provides an opportunity for individuals to capture their reflections and thoughts or simply things they feel grateful for. The book includes inspiring messages of thanks from celebrities and the general public. No one is mentioning material things. It is full of thanks for relationships, health, family, pets, mountain walks and other wonderful things! The journal is edited by Roisin Ingle and Marie Murray the psychologist has a short piece about the art of practising gratitude and how it can benefit us in everyday life. Scientific research has shown that people who express their gratitude daily are 25% happier and significantly healthier than those who don’t—and doing so takes as little as a minute a day! So the Irish Hospice Foundation hopes to get the whole country saying Thank You for all that is good in their lives. “The Book of Thanks” will represent the sixth in the line of Irish Hospice Foundation publications, following on from such successful ventures as the Whoseday Book (1999), Peter & the Wolf (2005), LifeStory (2007) and Zest!(2009).

Be your own life coach Clinical Hypnotherapist

KIERAN FITZPATRICK advises in his regular column on how to achieve your goals. IN THE LAST issue of The Local News we started the project of applying all I have been writing here in the past towards succeessfully surviving this current recession which is pretty much affecting everybody in some way. In the last article, I said that lots of bad news, like we’ve been hearing daily this year, affects people’s moods and when we are feeling down, we have less energy, determination and motivation. The very things we need when times are tough! I was saying how what we think about affects our mood, but that we can choose what to focus our thoughts on and so can actually choose how we are going to feel. So I was suggesting that we focus on something positive, something that makes us feel good, fills us with motivation, determination and energy. My suggestion was that you focus on where you want to be when this recession ends. Now that you have decided this, let’s refine it some more. It is as if we’ve got a tool to shape our future and we are going to sharpen it. How do we get to feel better, more motivated, positive and optimistic? How do you use your goal to pull you through this and get you in a positive mood. We are going to learn maybe just one technique, skill or exercie each week, because these take a little practice at first before they become second nature and easy. Especially if you have been inclined to think and act in a more negative way naturally in the past. First, double check that this goal that you have chosen is something that would REALLY make you happy. If that is the case, here’s what we’re going to do first. Find a bit of quiet time for yourself. This could be in bed, (when you wake up first thing in the morning is actually a good time for this), out walking, on the bus, in fact anywhere that you are doing something that doesn’t require concentration and where you can daydream. This time need be only a couple of minutes a day if you’re busy. Then let yourself begin to imagine or daydream yourself after the recession, having achieved your deam or goal. Do not consider yet how you are going to get there. (We will get to that in time). But at the moment it is as if we are just locating where we want to go on the map. As you daydream about having already achieved your goal, begin to fill in the details. Here, the key is in the detail. And imagining and including as much detail as possible is the start of us working towards achieving this goal. It is important to be IN your daydream. Do not be looking at yourself in it. Be there, looking out through your own eyes, hearing with your own ears and most importantly getting to experience how it will actually FEEL to be in that position. Look around you at the material things that surround you, your home, your car, your colleagues, your family and friends. Be there relaxed and in good health. (Things I’m presuming that you will want for yourself). Remember to include everything! If necessary, over a few days write a list of things you want. One third of us are skipping breakfast 30% PEOPLE in Dublin are failing to eat the most important meal of the day, with a staggering 49% of them spending under five minutes preparing and eating breakfast each day. Lack of time and having too much to do was cited as the main reason for skipping the most important meal of the day by 36% of Dubliners. The results are according to a new study into breakfast behaviour by Kraft Foods Ireland which recently launched Belvita Breakfast Biscuits into the Irish market. Belvita are the first specially designed breakfast biscuits to be made available to Irish consumers. The Breakfast Report found that, with 32% of the population skipping breakfast, Ireland is a close second only to Britain in Europe’s breakfast skipping table. 34% of Britons skip breakfast compared to only 17% in France, 18% in Italy and just 13% in Spain. The study also showed that almost one in 10 women in Ireland (nine per cent) never eats breakfast. All this is despite the fact that 58% of people in Ireland admit to feeling happier and more energetic when they do eat breakfast.¹ One of Ireland’s leading consultant dieticians, Sarah Keogh, commented, “This new research shows that many of us are skipping breakfast even though we know we feel better when we have it. Nutritionists recognise breakfast as one of the most important meals of the day and people who skip breakfast find it much harder to get their recommended daily amounts of iron and other vitamins. “People who eat breakfast have better concentration levels and find it easier to maintain a healthy

weight. Any convenient, portion controlled and specially designed breakfast alternative that makes it easier for more of us to eat a balanced breakfast more often can only be a good thing.” Of those of us that do eat breakfast, the research showed that we are bottom of the European table in the time we spend preparing and eating it, at just nine minutes compared to the UK, 9.8 minutes, France, 13.6 minutes, Spain, 14.9 minutes, and Italy, 11.2 minutes. 62% of Irish people in their 30’s spend less than five minutes preparing and eating the most important meal of the day.³ Sandra Gahan, Marketing Manager at Kraft Foods Ireland, said, “The research shows that while most of us understand the importance of breakfast, our increasingly busy lifestyles are prohibiting many of us from eating breakfast every day. “For decades people in continental Europe have enjoyed eating biscuits for breakfast where it’s part of their breakfast culture and where breakfast biscuits rich in cereal are recognised as part of a nutritious, balanced breakfast. Belvita Breakfast has been specially designed for breakfast. Each individually wrapped portion provides just the right amount to get a good start to the day in a format that enables people to enjoy them their way as part of a balanced breakfast – whether at home, on the go, or at work.” 37% of people say that they skip breakfast because they have no time and have too many other things to do in the morning, which, alongside not being able to face food at that time of day or not being hungry (38%), is the biggest reason people give for not having breakfast. One third of skippers choose to stay in bed longer (29%) and a quarter is spending time on their appearance each morning instead of having breakfast.

New mental health awareness campaign EUROVISION legends Johnny Logan and Niamh Kavanagh have launched an innovative new mental health awareness campaign, Lean on Me, aimed at encouraging friends and family to support those affected by depression. The singers teamed up with Bray Gospel Choir to deliver a surprise performance of Bill Withers’ classic song ‘Lean on Me’ to passers by and lunchtime shoppers. The launch, which coincided with European Depression Day, took place in the Royal College of Physicians with the musical performance on South King Street. With an estimated 400,000 people in Ireland experiencing depression at any one time, the Lean on Me campaign, supported by Lundbeck Ireland and Aware, has been developed to dispel the myths surrounding depression. Its aim is to encourage better understanding of the condition, and, above all, empower people by provide support to those affected and encourage them

to seek treatment if necessary. The campaign includes an interactive website – www.leanonme.net which provides detailed information on the causes, symptoms and impact of depression. Speaking at the launch two-time Eurovision winner Johnny Logan explained why he got involved with Lean on Me: “Lean on Me has an important message – be a friend to lean on. I know that I wouldn’t be where I am today without the support and love of my friends and family. “ Niamh Kavanagh commented “Just by being a friend to someone affected by depression you could help them on the road to recovery. The campaign challenged my perception of depression. It uses a different approach to encourage better understanding, empower you to provide support to those affected and, encourage them to seek treatment.” Kerry based GP Dr Eamon Shanahan emphasised the crucial role played by family and friends in sup-

porting a loved one with depression. “Studies have shown that the support of friends and family can help improve the recovery outcomes for those with depression,” he said. “Indeed, the World Health Organisation says that ‘psychological support from family, friends or health providers is powerfully protective in depression. I encourage anyone who is concerned about a friend or family member to visit the Lean on Me website to learn more about the ways in which they can provide this valuable support.” The campaign was developed following a survey (1) on depression which looked at the prevalence of depression, stigma surrounding the condition and the support experienced by those affected by depression. The survey found that almost half of respondents (48%) said that they had experienced depression at some time in their lives, with over 80% of respondents saying that they knew someone affected by depres-

sion. The survey also found that over half (55%) of those who had experienced depression at some point in their life, did not tell their family and friends, with 75% saying that they withdrew from family and friends. There were a number of reasons for this, with 28% saying they were too scared, ashamed or overwhelmed; 18% thought they would not understand and would turn away from them; 57% didn’t want to burden them with their problems and 29% didn’t know how to tell them.As well as information on depression, www.leanonme.net features a downloadable leaflet, “How to Say Lean on Me”, which provides information on how to begin a conversation about depression, and advice on supporting a friend who is affected by depression. The site also features a Friend Clip feature, which gives visitors the opportunity to star in their own ‘Lean on Me’ video and share it with a friend.
