Information About Conservation Works

To facilitate essential conservation works at Richmond Barracks, Dublin City Council Culture Company and Dublin City Libraries will be temporarily adjusting access and use of certain spaces within the building.

During the facilitation of these works, there may be some alterations to our opening hours, schedule of workshops, talks and activities.

On completion of these works, Richmond Barracks will provide an expanded Inchicore Library service from the Gymnasium and continue to offer its rich Culture Connects programme across the rest of the building and site.

We will share regular updates through our website and social media channels.

Try out something new! Join us for workshops, talks, tours and classes as part of Culture Connects @ Richmond Barracks. Culture Connects is our year-round programme that invites people in Dublin to try out new things.

You are welcome to visit us Tuesday to Saturday 10 am to 5 pm, with regular later opening on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. You can take part in one of our many workshops, talks and tours, or simply drop by to visit this historic building, browse in Inchicore Library (also open on Mondays) or enjoy our peaceful garden space.

You can book our events online, in person or over the phone. Bookings for certain events open one month in advance. Please check our website regularly to see the full programme.

We have four guided historic walking tours leaving from Richmond Barracks every week. Join guides Pat Garry, Niall Glennon, Brendan McEvoy and Fergus Whelan and discover the stories of the local area, its residents and their connections to and influence on Irish history.

Dance Delights

Tuesdays 1st to 15th April, 6 pm; duration 1 hour

Try out different dance styles in a relaxed and friendly environment. Led by Dance Artists in Residence Philippa Donnellan and Mia DiChiaro, enjoy moving your body, meet new people and have some fun. No prior experience of dance is needed and you can move at your own pace.

Sing for Fun

Thursdays 3rd April to 26th June, 11 am; duration 1 hour

Sing for Fun is for anyone interested in singing as part of a group to feel good. Join our Artist in Residence for Singing, Michael McCartan, and learn to sing different songs and do fun vocal warm-ups and exercises. No singing experience needed, just a willingness to take part and enjoy yourself. There will be no Sing for Fun on April 17th and 24th.

Exploring Nature Through Art

Wednesday 9th April, Wednesday 14th May and Saturday 17th May, 11 am; duration 2 hours

Explore the beauty of nature through art. Join artist and illustrator Enagh Farrell to learn how to draw native Irish plants using basic drawing and watercolour techniques. During the workshop you can also find out more about the important part these plants play in supporting local biodiversity. Each workshop will look at a different plant each time, so you can book to come to one or as many as you like. No previous experience is needed. Booking for May workshops opens on Tuesday 15th April at 10 am.

Leather Care Workshop

Saturday 12th April, 11.30 am; duration 90 minutes

Get your favourite wardrobe treasures or charity shop finds looking as good as new! Join facilitator Gobnait Ní Néill to discover how to care for your most loved leather bags, belts and wallets using simple techniques. Learn about some of the different cleaners, polishes, waxes and oils and where to find them - as well as how to spot high quality items second hand, and bring them back to life for a fraction of the cost of buying new.

Dance on Film - a film screening

Tuesday 15th April, 7 pm; duration 1 hour

Discover dance through film. Selected by Dance Artists in Residence Philippa Donnellan and Mia DiChiaro, join us to watch inspiring dance on film and discuss it over a cup of tea.

Ukulele for Beginners

Fridays 18th April to 23rd May, 2 pm; duration 1 hour

The ukulele is a great starter instrument for anyone who wants to try playing music for the first time. Led by musician Shane McGrath, each week you will learn some new chords and try out playing a few tunes. You don’t need any previous experience to take part. Ukuleles will be provided or you can bring your own.

Fridays 18th April to 23rd May, 3.15 pm; duration 1 hour

Ukulele for Improvers is for people who have already started playing the ukulele and want to continue to learn. Led by musician Shane McGrath, each week you will learn some new chords and try out playing a few tunes. Ukuleles will be provided or you can bring your own.

Introduction to Oil Painting

Wednesdays 23rd April to 21st May, 6.30 pm; duration 2 hours

Try out some of the basic techniques of oil painting. Join artist Paula Garcia Ibanez to explore composition, tone, colour mixing and brush techniques. Each week will cover a different aspect of painting with oils so you can book to come to one workshop or as many as you like. These workshops are suitable for complete beginners. All materials will be provided.

Herbal Workshops

Saturdays 26th April and 12th July, 10 am; duration 3 hours

Learn how to make your own herbal remedies. Join herbalist Maggie O’Keefe to find out about ethical harvesting, methods of drying and infusing plant materials to create your own simple salve, ointments and tonics. All materials will be provided and everyone will get a sample to take home with them. Booking for the July workshop opens on Thursday 12th June at 10 am.

Punch Needle Embroidery

Tuesdays 29th April to 3rd June, 11 am; duration 2 hours

Create beautiful designs with depth and texture from wool. Join artist and maker Niki Collier to discover the techniques of punch needle embroidery and work on creating your own piece. This weekly textile craft session is for absolute beginners, more experienced crafters, or anyone who wants to enjoy being creative and try something new. You can book to come to one workshop or as many as you like.

Thursdays 1st to 15th May, 2 pm; duration 90 minutes

Dip your toe into the world of making. Join comedy and tech whizz Aidan Fitzmaurice to learn simple skills like soldering and creating electronic circuits to complete fun and easy projects. Each week will focus on a different project so you can book to come to one workshop or as many as you like. This will be a gentle introduction to the world of making for absolute beginners. Booking opens on Tuesday 1st April at 10 am.

Creativity and Wellbeing (Friday afternoons)

Explore your creativity and how to develop a more positive sense of wellbeing. Join artist Shannon Jade Wilson to try out activities that give you time to reflect and express yourself, including journaling, writing haikus, and mindful colouring. Detox Your Home

Saturday 10th May, 11.30 am; duration 90 minutes

Learn how you can detox your home from harmful chemicals. Join facilitator Gobnait Ní Néill to learn to spot some of the common ways our homes can be detrimental to our environment and find out ways you can swap to more environmental alternatives or even make your own. You will also learn how to make your own citrus household cleaner to bring home. All materials will be provided. Booking opens on Thursday 10th April at 10 am.

Dance Delights: Creative Adventures

Tuesdays 20th May to 24th June, 6 pm; duration 90 minutes

Explore dance creatively. Join Dance Artist in Residence Philippa Donnellan for a series of lively movement workshops that will introduce you to simple ways of creating dance. Each week we will warm-up to different kinds of music then explore images, music or text to spark ideas and create original choreography. Enjoy moving your body, meet friends and have some fun in this new creative adventure! No prior experience of dance is needed and you can move at your own pace. Booking opens on Tuesday 22nd April at 10 am.

Exploring Abstract Painting (Tuesday evenings)

Tuesdays 10th June to 8th July, 6 pm; duration 2 hours

Make a DIY Terrarium

Wednesday 23rd July, 6.30 pm; duration 90 minutes

A terrarium is a glass container that works a little bit like a tiny greenhouse, keeping your plants moist, warm and protected. Join facilitator Gobnait Ní Néill to create your very own miniature terrarium using jam jars and other glass containers with lids. Learn about how to build up the right layers for drainage, soil and decoration. All materials will be provided. Booking opens on Tuesday 24th June at 10 am.

Make a Nature-themed Mobile

Wednesday 30th July, 6.30 pm; duration 90 minutes

Make and assemble your own decorative mobile. Join facilitator Gobnait Ní Néill and use decoupage, origami and upcycled jewellery. This work is small and detailed, so bring your reading glasses if you need them! All materials will be provided but feel free to bring images or small objects of your own that you might want to include in your design. Booking opens on Tuesday 1st July at 10 am.

Online Book Club

The last Thursday of every month, 8 pm; duration 1 hour

The Richmond Barracks online book club meets via Zoom on the last Thursday of the month. We talk about the month’s book, swap book recommendations and have a chat. Books we read and discuss together include both fiction and non-fiction by Irish and international authors.

Researching Local History

Tuesdays 1st to 15th April, 6.30 pm; duration 2 hours

Have you ever wanted to find out more about the history of your local area? Join historian Dr Declan Brady to learn how to do your own local history research. Each week will cover different ways of finding information about the people and places of your neighbourhood in times past, so you can book to come to one workshop or as many as you like. A History of Housing in Dublin

Wednesdays 9th to 30th April, 6.30 pm; duration 1 hour

Find out more about the history of housing in our capital city. Join historian Donal Fallon to explore the social and architectural history of housing in Dublin. Each of the four talks will cover a different part of the story, from the tenements to Victorian townships, the first suburbs and housing since the 1950s. You can book to come to all of the talks or as many as you like.

Local and National: The Irish Revolution 1913 to 1923

Tuesdays 1st, 8th and 15th July, 6.30 pm; duration 1 hour

Discover local stories from Ireland’s revolutionary period. Join historian Donal Fallon to explore stories like the role of Inchicore’s workers in the Lockout, and the place of Richmond Barracks in the Civil War. Booking opens on Tuesday 3rd June at 10 am.

The Colours of the Weave Really Got Me: Women Working in Kilmainham Mill

Wednesday 2nd April, 6 pm; duration 1 hour

Kilmainham Mill was a flour mill, then a textile mill, then closed in 2000. Women owned the mill and worked there over its lifetime. Join researcher Justine Murphy to explore their stories and what they tell us about the female labour force in Ireland.

Dublin in the Irish Revolution 1912 to 1923

Wednesday 7th May, 6 pm; duration 1 hour

Dublin was central to the Irish Revolution. Join Brian Hughes, author of Dublin: The Irish Revolution 1912-1923, to explore how the city experienced this important period of history.

Tales from the Ranch

Wednesday 4th June, 6 pm; duration 1 hour

The Ranch, a housing scheme on the border of Ballyfermot and Inchicore, has a fascinating history to tell. Join Dublin City Historian in Residence Katie Blackwood, Donal Fallon, and guests as they explore histories as diverse as housing, association football, and the life of local poet Thomas Kinsella.

A History of Dublin’s Hospitals

Wednesday 2nd July, 6 pm; duration 1 hour

Several hospitals near Richmond Barracks have played an important role in the story of Dublin. Join tour guide Pat Garry on this entertaining and illuminating historical journey, looking at the importance of hospitals in the development and history of the city from the 18th century to the revolutionary period.

‘Successor to Tone and Casement’?

Seán Russell and the IRA

Wednesday 6th August, 6 pm; duration 1 hour

Seán Russell was a veteran of the 1916 Rising and Chief of Staff of the IRA in 1938-39. Join historian Gerard Shannon to discuss the life of this important IRA leader of early 20th century Ireland and his impact on Irish republicanism.

Dublin City Historians in Residence

Dublin City Historians in Residence work in neighbourhoods across the city to encourage local people to engage with history, and to promote its sources and discussion, especially the historical collections in Dublin City Library and Archive.

By engaging with local communities and keeping people front and centre of history, the Historians in Residence help the people of Dublin City feel a connection to their local history.

Dublin City Historians in Residence programme is created by Dublin City Libraries, and is delivered in partnership with Dublin City Council Culture Company.

African Drumming Workshops

Saturdays 19th July to 23rd August, 10 am; duration 75 minutes

Take part in free drumming workshops as part of the Big Bang Festival of Rhythm. These workshops will concentrate on the rhythms of the Mandingue people of West Africa. Beginners and improvers are welcome. Drums will be provided or you can bring your own. There will be a performance on the final Saturday afternoon, 23rd August. Participants will be welcome to join the professional drummers for part of the performance. You can book to come to one workshop or as many as you like. Children over 12 are welcome when accompanied by an adult. Booking opens Thursday 19th June at 10 am.

African Dance Workshops

Saturdays 19th July to 23rd August, 11.30 am; duration 75 minutes

Take part in free West African Dance workshops as part of the Big Bang Festival of Rhythm. Each workshop is accompanied by live drumming. Bring water and dress to sweat! You can book to come to one workshop or as many as you like. Children over 12 are welcome when accompanied by an adult. Booking opens Thursday 19th June at 10 am.

The Big Bang Festival of Rhythm Performance

Saturday 23rd August, afternoon; times to be announced

Join drummers and dancers from the Big Bang Festival of Rhythm for a performance in the Richmond Barracks garden. Watch and listen, or join in if you wish. The Big Bang Festival of Rhythm is Ireland’s longest running intercultural festival. Every summer, the Big Bang Festival brings the best rhythm makers in the world to Ireland. Booking opens Thursday 19th June at 10 am.

Bat Walk and Workshop

Tuesday 8th and Wednesday 9th April, 7.30 pm.

Tuesday 15th and Wednesday 16th April, 7.45 pm; duration 90 minutes

Bats are fascinating but misunderstood creatures. Join facilitator Gobnait Ní Néill for bat crafts, bat facts and bat spotting! Take part in a walk along the canal to spot and identify different species using a bat detector. You can even make your own origami bat! Suitable for adults and accompanied children aged 7+. The same workshop takes place each day. To enable as many people as possible to take part, please only book one workshop.

Sustainable Saturdays: Reuse and Repair Workshops

Saturdays 12th April, 10th May, 14th June, 12th July, 9th August, 2 pm; duration 90 minutes

Use your creativity to keep textiles out of landfill, chat and meet new people. On the second Saturday of each month join Change Clothes to learn different ways to repair or upcycle your old clothes. Each month will cover something different, so you can book to come to one workshop or as many as you like. Please check the website for more details. Booking for each workshop opens one month before it takes place.

Nature Spotting with Smartphones

Tuesday 20th May, 1 pm and 6 pm; duration 90 minutes

Have you ever wanted to learn more about nature near you? Join facilitator Gobnait Ní Néill to find out how you can use traditional and modern ways to identify, count and report your sightings. Bring your smartphone or tablet so you can get started with some free apps to sharpen your skills. We will have some spare tablets to use if you don’t have your own. The same workshop takes place on Wednesday afternoon and evening. To enable as many people as possible to take part, please only book one workshop. Booking opens Tuesday 22nd April at 10 am.

How Does Your Garden Grow?

Thursday 17th April and Thursday 15th May, 1 pm; duration 1 hour

Gardening workshops for adults that offer advice and inspiration for firsttime or more experienced gardeners. Join Eco-Gardener in Residence Polly Rowley-Sams to learn how to start growing plants and vegetables and get the most out of the growing season. This workshop is suitable for all levels, from complete beginners to keen gardeners. The workshop will take place outside, so please dress appropriately for the weather.

Native Irish Trees

Tuesday 22nd April, 2 pm; duration 90 minutes

On Earth Day, learn about the native trees of Ireland. Join Eco-Gardener in Residence Polly Rowley-Sams to find out how to identify different native Irish species and discover the important role they play in supporting biodiversity. Make a cyanotype print of a leaf that you can bring home with you. This workshop will include a short walk to a local green space. This workshop is suitable for adults and accompanied children aged 7+.

Plant Swap and Community Garden Meet Up

Thursday 8th May, 12.30 pm; duration 90 minutes

Join Eco-Gardener in Residence Polly Rowley-Sams for a plant swap and community garden meet-up. We will be swapping plants, sharing gardening tips, talking about the community garden and spending time in the garden together. Arrive or leave any time between 12.30 pm and 2 pm. Children are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult. Booking opens Tuesday 8th April at 10 am.

Biodiversity Walk

Saturday 14th June, 11 am; duration 1 hour

€5 full / €3 concession

Discover the biodiversity of Inchicore on a microscopic level! Join Eco-Gardener in Residence Polly Rowley-Sams on a biodiversity walk and get a close-up view of the ecology of the local area. Using magnifying lenses you will be exploring nature up close - prepare to discover some unexpected wonders! Suitable for adults and children aged 7+. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Richmond Barracks Community Garden Drop-in Gardening Tuesday to Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm

Self-guided Biodiversity Worksheet

Tuesday to Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm

Explore the garden with our self-guided worksheet for children. Made by local children and Eco-Gardener in Residence Polly Rowley-Sams. Learn about the importance of biodiversity and protecting the natural environment with games, drawing and some fun facts. Pick up from the reception desk or download from richmondbarracks.ie/biodiversity.

Little Crafters

Join us for a weekly themed craft session for children aged 1 to 5 and their grown ups. Led by crafter and educator Lisa O’Connor, each week we will be getting creative, exploring different materials and having some fun! This includes a messy play activity, so wearing less-loved clothes is advised! Children must be accompanied for the duration of the workshop.

Little Gardeners

Fridays 9th to 30th May and Tuesdays 1st to 22nd July, 11 am; duration 1 hour

Little Gardeners is a workshop for babies, toddlers and young children aged 5 and under and their parent or carer. Led by Eco-Gardener in Residence, Polly Rowley-Sams, let’s enjoy time exploring the Richmond Barracks garden and its biodiversity together! Dress for the weather as the workshop is outside and wear clothing you don’t mind getting dirty. Booking for the July workshops opens on Tuesday 3rd June at 10 am.

Chime in and Play: Music and Movement

Children aged 18 months to 5 years and their parents and carers will enjoy these movement and music workshops. Join musician Shane McGrath, and explore different music styles, play, sing, move and have fun! Booking opens Tuesday 6th May at 10 am.

Make and Create Family Drop-in Workshops

Make and create together at these family friendly drop-in workshops. Each Saturday join a different artist to explore art and crafts and enjoy being creative together. This is a drop in workshop so no booking required, just show up and have fun! Suitable for all ages but children must be accompanied by an adult. Places may be limited.

Make a Jam Jar Terrarium

Wednesday 23rd July, 11 am; duration 90 minutes

A terrarium is a glass container that works a little bit like a tiny greenhouse, keeping your plants moist, warm and protected. Join facilitator Gobnait Ní Néill to create your very own miniature terrarium using jam jars and other glass containers with lids. Learn about how to build up the right layers for drainage, soil and decoration. Children should bring at least one of their grown-ups to help with the fiddly bits! Booking opens on Tuesday 24th June at 10 am.

Make a Nature-themed Mobile

Thursday 31st July, 11 am; duration 90 minutes

Make your own nature-themed mobile at this family friendly workshop. Join facilitator Gobnait Ní Néill to learn to assemble a simple handmade mobile using paper, string and treasures collected from nature to decorate your home. Sketchbook Club

Tuesdays 1st April, 6th May, 10th June and 15th July, 6 pm; duration 90 minutes

Sketchbook Club is a friendly space for young people to draw, make art and make friends. Hosted by artist and illustrator Kate Escolin, Sketchbook Club encourages fun and playful art-making. Everyone is welcome, whether you are an experienced artist or just starting out. All art materials are provided but feel free to bring your own sketchbook.

Zine and Comic Workshops

Tuesdays 13th May to 3rd June, 6 pm; duration 90 minutes

Get creative in this weekly whizz-bang introduction to zines and comics. Join comic artist and illustrator Kate Escolin to draw, create stories and make something different you can bring home with you each week. You can come to one workshop or as many as you like. Acrylic Painting for Young Artists

Tuesdays 1st to 29th July, 1 pm; duration 90 minutes

Discover techniques for painting with acrylics. Join artist Paula Garcia Ibanez for weekly workshops for younger artists aged 13 to 16. Explore composition, tone, colour mixing and brush techniques. Each week will focus on something different so you can book to come to one workshop or as many as you like. These workshops are suitable for beginners and improvers. Learn about Easter traditions from Ireland and other countries, and find out how the tradition of chocolate eggs came about. Decorate your own egg and take part in an Easter egg hunt in the garden. The same workshop takes place on Wednesday and Thursday. To enable as many people as possible to take part, please only book one workshop.

Magical May Bushes

Thursday 1st May, 3.30 pm; duration 1 hour

In many parts of Ireland, it was traditional at the start of May to decorate a bush with ribbons, egg shells and flowers. Make your very own magical May bush in this workshop and learn about the history and folklore of Bealtaine.

Ancient Rome

Culture Connects

Culture Connects is a year-round programme that invites people in Dublin to try out new things.

We offer ways for people to make and create together, to share ideas, and connect through culture and conversation. We plan activities based on what we learn from listening to people. More workshops for April to August will be added to our website on an ongoing basis.

Easter and Summer Camps

We run a programme of short camps for children and teenagers during school holidays.

Places are very limited, so advanced booking is advised.

There is a small charge of €10 for the three days for one participant, or €15 for two or more participants in the same family, to go towards the cost of equipment and refreshments. Drinks and light snacks will be provided.

Parents or Guardians will be asked to complete a permission form before the camps.

Inchicore Library at Richmond Barracks

Richmond Barracks is home to the Inchicore Library, operated by Dublin City Libraries. The library offers a range of adult fiction and non-fiction material, a selection of young adult material and a junior library. A range of books on Dublin are also available in the library’s Dublin Collection. Items can be reserved online and collected at Inchicore Library. Printing and photocopying facilities are also available.

Library Opening Times

Inchicore Library now has extended self-service opening hours in place. This means the library is accessible to the public from Monday to Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm each week.

Library staff will be in the library from 10 am to 1 pm and 2 pm to 5 pm from Monday to Thursday every week and on alternative Fridays and Saturdays. If you have any questions about this please enquire with library staff or email inchicorelibrary@dublincity.ie.

Each month Inchicore Library runs a number of groups that are open for anyone to join.

The Toddler Group meets Wednesday mornings from 10 am to 11 am.

There is a Sensory Playtime Session from 11 am to 12 noon on Monday 14th April, on Monday 12th May, on Monday 9th June, on Monday 14th July, and Monday 11th August.

The Knitting Club meets on Thursdays from 3 pm to 4.30 pm and both experienced knitters and beginners are welcome to join in. It is a drop in event, no booking needed.

The Movie and Book Club meet on the third Monday of the month at 2.15 pm to discuss a book and its film adaptation.

The Junior Book Club for budding readers aged 7 to 9 meets on the third Tuesday of the month.
