Try out something new this Spring! Join us for workshops, talks, tours and classes as part of Culture Connects @ Richmond Barracks. Culture Connects is our year-round programme that invites people in Dublin to try out new things.

You are welcome to visit us Tuesday to Saturday 10 am to 5 pm, with regular later opening on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. You can take part in one of our many workshops, talks and tours, or simply drop by to visit this historic building, browse in Inchicore Library (also open on Mondays) or enjoy our peaceful garden space.

You can book our events online, in person or over the phone. Bookings for certain events open one month in advance. Please check our website regularly to see the full programme.

We have four guided historic walking tours leaving from Richmond Barracks every week. Join guides Pat Garry, Niall Glennon, Brendan McEvoy and Fergus Whelan and discover the stories of the local area, its residents and their connections to and influence on Irish history.

Poetry Workshops

Friday 10th January 10 am and 2 pm; duration 2 hours

Join poet Colm Keegan in a workshop inspired by our exhibition The Archive Within Us. Explore how your own stories connect with history, and write your own poems inspired by personal memories and treasured objects. This is a chance to reflect on what we remember and why, while sharing creativity and experiences with others. The same workshop takes place on Friday morning and afternoon. To enable as many people as possible to take part, please only book one workshop.

Introduction to Ceramics

Wednesdays 15th, 22nd and 29th January, 6 pm; duration 2 hours

Try your hand at ceramics and learn some of the basic techniques of this artform. Led by artist and designer Liz Walsh, each week will focus on making a different object, including a plant pot, a pot holder and a mug. You can book to come to all the workshops or as many as you like.

Sing for Fun

Thursdays 16th January to 10th April (except 20th February), 11 am; duration 1 hour

Sing for Fun is for anyone interested in singing as part of a group. Join our Artist in Residence for Singing, Michael McCartan, and learn to sing different songs and do fun vocal warm-ups and exercises. No singing experience needed, just a willingness to take part and enjoy yourself.

Exploring Weaving and Embroidery

Thursdays 16th January to 13th February, 2 pm; duration 2 hours

Explore two of the ancient crafts of Ireland - weaving and embroidery. Join artist and maker Niki Collier for this weekly textile craft session for those who enjoy being creative and want to try something new. Learn different weaving and embroidery techniques and work on creating your own piece. You can come to one workshop or as many as you like.

The Moving Choir

Fridays 17th January to 7th March, 2 pm; duration 90 minutes

The Moving Choir is a series of singing and dancing workshops that are open to anyone who wants to try something new in a fun and relaxed environment. Join Artists in Residence Michael McCartan and Mia DiChiaro on a creative journey that connects voice, body, and rhythm. No prior experience of singing or dance is needed. You can come to one workshop or as many as you like.

Ukulele for Beginners

Tuesdays 21st January to 25th February, 6 pm; duration 1 hour

The ukulele is a great starter instrument for anyone who wants to try playing music for the first time. Led by musician Shane McGrath, each week you will learn some new chords and try out playing a few tunes. You don’t need any previous experience to take part. Ukuleles will be provided or you can bring your own. You can come to one workshop or as many as you like.

Ukulele for Improvers

Tuesdays 21st January to 25th February, 7.15 pm; duration 1 hour

Ukulele for Improvers is for people who have already started playing the ukulele and want to continue to learn. Led by musician Shane McGrath, this is a relaxed and fun space to keep improving your ukulele skills. Each week you will learn some new chords and try out playing a few tunes. Ukuleles will be provided or you can bring your own. You can come to one workshop or as many as you like.

Introduction to Printmaking (afternoons)

Brigid’s Cross and Brídeog Workshop

Friday 31st January, 1pm; duration 90 minutes

Brigid’s crosses and Brídeog dolls are made to celebrate St Brigid and the pagan festival of Imbolc. Join Eco-Gardener in Residence Polly RowleySams to make your own Brigid’s cross or Brídeog doll ready for St Brigid’s day on the 1st of February.

Exploring Fabric Printing

Tuesdays 11th and 18th February, 6.30 pm; duration 2 hours

Explore fabric printing techniques with artist and designer Liz Walsh. On the 11th of February learn how to carve a lino block and use it to print a repeat pattern onto fabric. On the 18th of February learn how to block print onto fabric using Indian wood blocks. You can book to come to one workshop or both. Booking opens Tuesday 14th January at 10 am.

Felted Hearts

Thursday 13th February, 12:30 pm; duration 1 hour

Create a beautiful felted heart for the person you love this Valentines Day, or keep it for yourself! Join artist and maker Niki Collier for this fun craft workshop. Booking opens Tuesday 14th January at 10 am.

Make

a Botanical Relief

Wednesday 26th February, 6.30 pm; duration 2 hours

A relief is a wall-mounted sculpture. Join artist Liz Walsh to learn how to use plaster and local plants to create your own unique decorative botanical relief. All materials will be provided, though you are welcome to bring leaves and flowers to use in your work. Booking opens Tuesday 28th January at 10 am.

Céilí Mór Dún Richmond

Bígí linn le haghaidh oíche ceoil, rince agus spraoi. Join us for a night of music, dance and fun. Céilí caller and sean nós dancer Louise O’Connor will be calling out the dance steps, so this céilí is ideal for novices and less experienced dancers. Be prepared to make use of your cúpla focail and have a lot of fun! This is an alcohol-free event for adults. Booking opens Wednesday 5th February at 10 am.

Creative Drama for Beginners

Fridays 7th March to 11th April, 11 am; duration 2 hours

Try out acting and express yourself creatively through drama. Join theatre maker and drama teacher Carmel Rooney for these beginnerfriendly drama workshops. Learn acting techniques, improvisation, and storytelling. Build confidence and have fun with like-minded people. No prior experience necessary. Booking opens Friday 7th February at 10 am.

Dance Delights

Tuesdays 11th March to 15th April, 6 pm; duration 1 hour

Try out different dance styles in a relaxed and friendly environment. Led by Dance Artists in Residence Philippa Donnellan and Mia DiChiaro, enjoy moving your body, meet new people and have some fun. An Introduction to Researching Local History

Tuesdays 11th March to 15th April, 6.30 pm; duration 2 hours

Have you ever wanted to find out more about the history of your local area? In these workshops led by historian Dr Declan Brady you will learn how to do your own local history research. Felting: Making Art from Wool

Wednesdays 12th March to 16th April, 6.30 pm; duration 2 hours

Explore the art of felt making with visual artist and maker Niki Collier. Each week will be an opportunity to learn about felting, experiment and create your own piece. You can come to one workshop or as many as you like.

Monthly Supper Clubs at Richmond

Barracks

Wednesdays 8th January, 5th February and 5th March, 5 pm to 7 pm

Join us for a supper club. It is a perfect opportunity to enjoy some wholesome hot food before attending one of our workshops or talks, or to drop in for some food and a chat if you’re in the area.

FoodCloud Kitchen will be serving a menu of seasonal food which will include a drink, a main course and a dessert, all for €10. Food will be available from 5 pm with last orders at 6.30 pm.

Places are limited so booking in advance is advised.

The Archive Within Us

Wednesday 8th January, 6 pm; duration 1 hour

Join Margaret Roche, Colm Keegan, Claire Halpin and Evan Musgrave for a panel discussion about the exhibition The Archive Within Us, the importance of personal histories, and how they intertwine with the national historic record.

Richmond Barracks and the 1867 Fenian Rising

Wednesday 5th February, 6 pm; duration 1 hour

In this talk, historian Donal Fallon will explore the infiltration of Richmond Barracks by the Irish Republican Brotherhood, and historian Fergus Whelan will recount his family’s involvement in the fighting. Fergus Whelan has written several studies exploring Irish revolutionary history and is a tour guide with Dublin City Council Culture Company.

Curfews in Dublin 1920 - 1921

Wednesday 5th March, 6 pm; duration 1 hour

Join Historian in Residence for Dublin Central Elizabeth Kehoe for a fascinating talk exploring how ordinary people were impacted by the curfews imposed during the War of Independence. Elizabeth will share the story of Mary Rigney whose perilous journey home one evening illustrates the dangers of the curfew for those involved in the conflict.

The Richmond Barracks online book club meets via Zoom on the last Thursday of the month. Sustainable Saturdays: Clothing Repair Cafe

Saturday 11th January, 2 pm; duration 90 minutes

Repair, don’t replace! Join Change Clothes for a quarterly clothing repair cafe. Change Clothes is a community based clothing reuse hub. Bring your worn-out garments or charity shop finds and learn to mend, patch, or alter them. Reduce fashion waste, save money, and extend the life of your favorite clothes. No sewing experience is needed and all skill levels are welcome.

Sustainable Saturdays: Reuse and Repair Social

Saturdays 8th February and 8th March, 2 pm; duration 90 minutes

Upcycle your old clothes into new treasures with Change Clothes! Use your creativity to keep textiles out of landfill, chat and meet new people. These workshops are family friendly, children should be accompanied by an adult. Booking opens Wednesday 8th January and Saturday 8th February at 10 am.

Biodiversity Walking Tour

Take a closer look at the biodiversity of Inchicore with Eco-Gardener in Residence Polly Rowley-Sams. You will learn about the ecology of the locality and discover some unexpected local treasures. Suitable for adults and children aged 7+. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Building Living Willow Structures

Thursday 20th, Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd February, 1 pm; duration 2 hours

Learn how to make large-scale living structures with willow. Join EcoGardener in Residence Polly Rowley-Sams for these fun and relaxed hands-on workshops. Learn about this natural, sustainable and versatile material and help us build a structure in the Richmond Barracks garden. You can book to come to all three workshops or as many as you like. Seed Swap and Community Garden Meet Up

Friday 28th February and Saturday 1st March, 12 pm; duration 1 hour

Join Eco-Gardener in Residence Polly Rowley-Sams for a seed-swap and community garden meet-up. We will be swapping seeds and plants, sharing gardening tips, talking about the community garden and spending time in the garden together. You can come either day or both days, whichever suits you best. Children are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult. Booking opens Tuesday 28th January at 10 am.

Create Garden Habitats

Tuesday 4th March, 1 pm; duration 90 minutes

Learn how to create nature-friendly habitats for insects and animals. Join Eco-Gardener in Residence Polly Rowley-Sams to find out about the different things you can put in place to support biodiversity in your garden or workplace. Suitable for adults.

Self-guided Biodiversity Worksheet

Tuesday to Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm

Explore the garden with our self-guided worksheet for children. Made by local children and Eco-Gardener in Residence Polly Rowley-Sams. Learn about the importance of biodiversity and protecting the natural environment with games, drawing and some fun facts. Pick up from the reception desk or download from richmondbarracks.ie/biodiversity.

Native Irish Animals: Shadow Puppet Workshop

Tuesday 14th January at 3.30 pm; duration 1 hour

Make and perform with your own hand-made shadow puppets. Join Eco-Gardener in Residence Polly Rowley-Sams for a shadow puppet making workshop exploring native Irish animals. Children do not need to be accompanied by an adult but adults are invited to watch a short performance with the puppets at the end of the workshop.

Chime in and Play: Music and Movement

Fridays 24th January to 28th February, 3 pm; duration 1 hour

Children aged 18 months to 5 years and their parents and carers will enjoy these movement and music workshops. Join musician Shane McGrath, and explore different music styles, play, sing, move and have fun!

Make and Create: Family Drop-in workshops

Saturday 18th January to 8th February; drop-in any time from 12.30 pm to 2 pm

Make and create together at these family friendly drop-in workshops. Join visual artist Susan Leen to try out fun activities each week, including self portraits, shapes and collages. This is a drop-in workshop, so no booking required; just show up any time from 12.30 pm and stay as long as you wish. The workshop finishes at 2 pm. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Young Artist Camp

Tuesday 18th, Wednesday 19th and Thursday 20th February, 11.30 am; duration 90 minutes

€10 or €15 for families with more than one child taking part Looking for something fun and creative to do in the mid-term break? We have just the solution! Join artist Kate Escolin for a three-day long Art Camp for children aged 9 to 12. Learn how to develop your ideas from initial sketches to finished artworks. Explore new projects each day, from zine making and comic making to illustration and character design. This will be a creative space where mistakes are welcomed and exploration is encouraged! Booking opens Saturday 18th January at 10 am.

Sketchbook Club

Tuesdays 4th March, 1st April and 6th May, 6 pm; duration 90 minutes

Sketchbook Club is a friendly and relaxed space for teenagers and young adults to draw, make art and make friends. Hosted by artist and illustrator Kate Escolin, Sketchbook Club encourages fun and playful art-making and provides a safe space to create art in a relaxed environment. Everyone is welcome, whether you are an experienced artist or just starting out. All art materials are provided but feel free to bring your own sketchbook.

Family Céilí Disco

Saturday 8th March, 3 pm; duration 60 minutes

Bígí linn le haghaidh cóisir dioscó don teaghlach ar fad! Join céilí instructor and musician Louise O’Connor for a family friendly céilí disco! Have fun dancing simple céilí dances, followed by some disco dances, to get all ages stamping, shuffling and practicing their haon, dó, trí’s. Suitable for children aged 5+. Children must be accompanied by a parent or carer but everyone is encouraged to join in!

Ancient Irish Writing

Saturday 8th March, 11 am; duration 60 minutes

Discover the ancient Irish writing system of Ogham. Try your hand at writing in this ancient language and create your own Ogham stone with modelling clay or drawing.

Inchicore Library at Richmond Barracks

Richmond Barracks is also home to the Inchicore Library, operated by Dublin City Libraries. The library offers a range of adult fiction and nonfiction material, a selection of young adult material and a junior library. A range of books on Dublin are also available in the library’s Dublin Collection. Items can be reserved online and collected at Inchicore Library. Printing and photocopying facilities are also available.

Library Opening Times

Inchicore Library now has extended self-service opening hours in place. This means the library is accessible to the public from Monday to Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm each week.

Library staff will be in the library from 10 am to 1 pm and 2 pm to 5 pm from Monday to Thursday every week and on alternative Fridays and Saturdays. If you have any questions about this please enquire with library staff or email inchicorelibrary@dublincity.ie.

Each month Inchicore Library runs a number of groups that are open for anyone to join.

The Toddler Group meets Wednesday mornings from 10 am to 11 am.

There is a Sensory Playtime Session from 11 am to 12 noon on Monday 13th January, on Monday 10th of February and on Monday 10th March.

The Knitting Club meets on Thursdays from 3 pm to 4.30 pm and both experienced knitters and beginners are welcome to join in. It is a drop in event, no booking needed.

The Movie and Book Club meet on the third Monday of the month at 2.15 pm to discuss a book and its film adaptation.

The Junior Book Club for budding readers aged 7-9 meets on the third Tuesday of the month.
