As soon as the gates opened, hundreds of excited D.C. natives poured into the venue site located right in Kenilworth Terrace in the Northeast. People made their way through our various stations, which included free DTLR giveaways, a gaming center, a Community Outreach area with toiletry giveaways and helpful resources, and so much more.

Washington, D.C., was most certainly the place to be this past summer for our first-ever DTLR Summer Block Party! Alongside our good friends at the U.S. Army, we threw a day-long event that covered all our essential pillars — entertainment, community, fitness and lifestyle.

What happens when you truly are “Better Together?!” A common unity is formed! Every Regional Community Outreach Manager flew in town to participate in DTLR’s first Community Baby Shower! The event took place July 30th and the team set up shop at the Summer Block Party to distribute over 2,500 diapers, wipes and baby accessories to the community. Free raffles kept attendees close by, as we were able to give away highchairs, car seats, walkers and toys for each raffle winner. A special thank you goes out to our community partner The Movement Team for the assist, and an even bigger thank you goes out to our Community Outreach Managers, all dads, for their endless efforts in our communities!

We had performances from the likes of TOB Band, WanMor, OMB Peezy, YungManny, Money Jake, Noochie, WillThaRapper, Young Jose, Kelow Latesha, North Ave Jax and many others.

One of the main attractions was the U.S. Army’s area, which had it all, including an interactive fitness area, multiple information tables to educate our attendees on everything Army-related, and an overall presence that could be felt by everyone. From talking with some of our guests, learning more about what the Army has to offer and how they can be involved was a highlight of the day.

Throughout the day, the main stage area was full of amazing performances. With DJ Cat Daddy on the 1s and 2s, the day was hosted by DC’s finest, Angie Ange, as well as DTLR Radio personalities Tiara LaNiece, Fadam Got Da Juice, Kyle On The Mic and CDK On the Mic. DTLR Radio was also broadcasting live all day long.

One of the final highlights of the day was our hooping and training session with Dallas Mavericks assistant coach God Shammgod. The hoops coach star had the kids at the Block Party beyond excited as they did basketball drills, learned more about basketball and even got some free shoes, courtesy of Puma. Shammgod was assisted by Washington Wizards host Britt Waters. Overall, it was an incredible day and a beautiful start to our Block Party experience.

Each year, DTLR places a branded float in the parade accompanied by the DTLR branded street team truck. This year’s float was hosted by DTLR Radio personalities DJ Commando and King Flexxa, with DTLR staff and family members riding along the parade route. DTLR staff passed out DTLR-branded promotional items to the crowd as the float rolled down Martin Luther King Drive into Washington Park. The love for DTLR was felt from the community this year!

For The past 15 years, DTLR has partnered with the Bud Billiken Parade by donating DTLR gift cards and school supplies to scholarship winners from Chicago Defender Charities. Funds used for our participation in each parade also goes to scholarship recipients headed to college for their freshmen year.

BUD PARADEBILLIKEN

Every summer since 1929, “The Bud Billiken Parade” has united African Americans throughout the city of Chicago in music, dance, food, and laughter. It is one of the only spaces where people can openly and emphatically praise the historic roots that plant us into the South Side of Chicago. The Bud Billiken Parade is more than a procession of bands and floats marching down King Drive, it is a commemoration of our past and a celebration of our future.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeast Ohio provides safe, fun places for kids ages 6-18 to go after school with a focus on academic success, healthy lifestyles, and character development. This project was incredibly special to us because we have current employees that grew up in this Boys and Girls Club, which is located right across the street from our Broadway DTLR store. The project was announced during the 2022 NBA All Star weekend, and the reveal happened just in time for back to school season. DTLR even enlisted the help of one of the club’s youth to assist with the designing of the event T-shirts. We look forward to future partnerships in this community.

DTLR Community Outreach donated the funds for the $100,000 playground, which was designed with input from club kids. The new playground includes new equipment, a rope challenge, rubber mulch padding, benches, and an expanded playground area.

After 7 months of planning, the new playground for the Broadway Boys & Girls Club in Cleveland was finally revealed. With officials and children from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeast Ohio (BGCNEO), we gathered to celebrate the unveiling of a brand-new playground during a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The mural was created by local artist Cody Canty, who provided his artistic genius to create a mural that will live on Mervo’s campus in honor of Elijah. Members of the Mervo Football Program, the Northeast Baltimore community and Gorham family were on-site for the dedication.

member of Mervo’s football team who sustained a head injury in a game during the 2021 season and tragically passed away a few days later. After his passing, his family worked diligently to get the Elijah Gorham Act passed in Baltimore City Schools, which requires all Maryland schools to develop an emergency action plan for every sports venue. Gov. Larry Hogan signed the act into law in April.

With the gracious support of the Nike brand, we were able to distribute 500 pairs of brand-new shoes to students in one of our underserved Detroit neighborhoods, during the annual back to school event sponsored by Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield and National Recording Artist and Detroit Native Icewear Vezzo.

In this Eastside Detroit neighborhood, the event is well known for having tons of resources, book bags, school supplies and fun for students in this community. The attendees were pleasantly surprised and appreciative when DTLR set up to distribute our special giveaways for preschool and elementary-age attendees. It is in the neighborhood where Vezzo’s mother says, “the rapper grew up, and now he’s using his influence to give back to the community.” We appreciate all the resources the Council President Sheffield provided to this neighborhood and look forward to joining their efforts in the future.

From getting new clothes, to making sure they have the supplies, the costs can add up fast for families. In true Dare To Live Right form, we are glad to see the smiles on the faces of entire families. We were happy to join in the organizers passion to send kids off with not only the supplies they need, noting it is also just as important to get them started with confidence.

This event marks the midpoint of a three-year partnership between our two organizations, which was made to adopt the incoming Freshman classes of 2025, 2026 and 2027 and provide them with uniforms, volunteerism opportunities and scholarships.

DTLR Community Outreach celebrated the second year of our partnership with Jalen Rose Leadership Academy (JRLA) to help students prepare for the upcoming school year, as well as alleviate the burden of parents having to purchase uniforms. We donated school uniforms to all the incoming freshman class of the school. Each scholar was gifted with two uniforms, free of charge, and their third will also be free, on behalf of DTLR. Jalen Rose was on- site and expressed his gratitude to DTLR for the support of the school.

BACK HAIRCUTS

We were pleased to partner with the New Balance brand to provide free haircuts and backpacks -- courtesy of New Balance -- to 200 youths on the southside of Chicago. We solicited the services of a local barbershop, where their barbers set up to provide fresh cuts to any school age youth at our 87th and Dan Ryan DTLR location. The families were very appreciative of our efforts.

BACK TO SCHOOL HAIRCUTS

All this shopping was infused with the sounds of DJ Meechie and wheels, and the 93.7 team broadcasting live to give away tickets to various concerts in the city. The Bars I-95 family pulled up, engaging with New Britain’s emcees and customers and speaking to them about the merge of fashion and hip-hop. It was a great day for the DTLR store in New Britain, and an even better day for the community members, who received discounts all day on footwear and apparel, thousands of dollars in gift card giveaways, and free tickets and school supplies.

There was a lot going on in New Britain, CT, on August 27th. It was the last weekend before New Britain’s public schools started the new year, it was the last day of Tax Free Week, and last but not least, August 27th was the grand opening celebration of DTLR’s New Britain location. The community pulled up heavy throughout the evening: kids and parents shopping for back to school and for the free book bags/school supplies, young adults amazed at our selection of the latest fashion and footwear, and the sneakerheads who arrived with tunnel vision, focused on our vast amount of Jordans in stock!

NEW BRITAIN OPENINGGRAND

DTLR Community Outreach recently conducted several nationwide back to school efforts to help students prepare for the upcoming school year – providing them with the essentials they need to succeed, while also helping them feel confident. Throughout the month of August, DTLR donated more than 5,000 backpacks filled with school supplies, such as notebooks, pens, pencils, pencil cases, binders and much more. We also commissioned local barbers and provided hundreds of free haircuts in our stores.

The following efforts took place in various DTLR regions, which were powered by our own District and Store Managers. We want to send a huge THANK YOU to all that participated in giving back to their own communities.

DARE TO EDUCATE BACK TO SCHOOL 2022 FLORIDA EVENTS

With our Florida regions going back to school early every year, we kicked off our efforts at the top of August. The DTLR outreach team focused on the education pillar of our mission this month by joining with our community partners to help alleviate the financial stress placed on parents for back to school season.

We sponsored four of our partner organizations’ back to school giveaway events. These events were held in Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Gainesville, and Orlando. In these cities, we were side-by-side with former NBA player Alonzo Mourning, Rapper Kodak Black, the City of Miami, and Community Activist Benny Blades. Across these four events, over 4,000 book bags stuffed with school supplies were distributed, along with fresh produce, PPE items and other resources.

During the last weekend of August -- in partnership with Adidas -- DTLR Community helped local students in three of our cities have a Fresh Start to the upcoming school year by providing free haircuts, backpack giveaways, and mental wellness handouts. A pop-up barbershop was set up at the stores where students could get free haircuts from local licensed barbers. Backpacks and mental wellness handouts were passed out to all that received a haircut, as well as other students that were in the store at the time of the event. It is always an amazing feeling to get students ready for the upcoming school year by helping them feel confident, while providing supplies and a bit of relief to the families in our communities.

The Fresh Start events were held at stores in Richmond, Detroit, and Philadelphia, where we provided 100 haircuts and 200 bags filled with our special school supplies at each location. Major shout out to Adidas for bringing our vision of Mental Wellness School Supplies to life this year. Mental Wellness initiatives were the newest part DTLR’s back to school giveaway items this year; distributing Mindfulness Journals for Teens and Positive Affirmation Coloring Books for our younger students, along with items to help combat anxiety and stress, such as Push and Pop-It notebooks and pencil cases. With our new items, we are confident that our student recipients will be well prepared for all this school year throws their way.

Thanks to our partner Nike, we enhanced the Training Day with a 360-photo booth to collect data from students, passed out DTLR swag bags filled with DTLR branded promo items and raffled off DTLR gift cards along with exclusive Nike sandals gifted in DTLR branded shopping bags. Over 3,000 students were in attendance and were thouroughly entertained by our host, CDK on the Mic and our special guest, DJ Low Key. All in all, it was a great way to kick off the tour!

HOWARDUNIVERSITY

“The Real HU,” aka Howard University welcomed their students back to campus by having them all come together to “rep Their city!” It all took place August 17th from 5-8 pm in “the Valley” -- an open area in the middle of campus. Collaborating with DTLR & Nike, we gifted students Nike footwear, DTLR gift cards, and more. To turn this annual “get together” up a notch, DTLR took over the entertainment with Quick Silva providing the music, Fadam and Jaycee on the mic interacting with students and hosting all giveaway activations!! Though it began to storm, eventually resulting in a shut down, we rocked out with HU’s new first-year class till the last minute, allowing them to rep their city and receive all that DTLR had to offer.

We came, we saw, we conquered — our Morgan State University stop of the Welcome Back Tour was a major success. With our partners at Nike and Jordan, we had the Morgan State student body partying all afternoon and evening as they embraced the new school year. Set up right outside of the Student Center was our Fresh Fit station where hundreds of Morgan State students who RSVPed in advance were able to get some brand-new gear, courtesy of Nike. We had a gaming center, a 360 photo booth, food trucks and so much more for the students to engage with.

With DTLR Radio’s own Fadam Got Da Juice and Kyle On The Mic handling hosting duties, the main stage was jumping well before our first artist came on to perform. The student body flooded the field and waited anxiously for our many performers, which included the likes of Jacquees, Dusty Locane, Rah Swish, DJ Quicksilva, Money Jake, Kyle Gee and so many others. We featured emerging artists as part of the Barz on the Yard contest, we had dance offs from the likes of TSU Terry and some kids from the crowd, and we gave away DTLR gift cards. We had a ball! The energy was tremendous from the moment we opened the gates, until the last music note hit. It’s safe to say we welcomed Morgan State back to the school year in a major way.
