У 2019 році ми «повернулися» до свого міста, Харкова. У нас давно не було так багато проєктів одночасно в Україні, тим більше в рідному місті. Напевно, ми ще ніколи не підходили так серйозно, детально і відразу на декількох майданчиках, до теми колективного житла у сформованому міському контексті. У цьому сенсі хотілося дослідити і спробувати нові тенденції, що виникають сьогодні в типології житлових будинків.

In 2019 we “came back” to Kharkiv, our home town. It’s been a while since we last had so many projects at a time in Ukraine, let alone in the city where we are based. Even more so, we have never taken such a serious and detailed approach - on several building sites at the same time - to the topic of collective housing within the dense urban context. In this respect, we wanted to explore and test new trends that are relevant for modern housing typology.

Ще одним важливим сюжетом цього року була тема людських ресурсів через призму робочого простору, що одночасно сприяє комунікації, освіті та розвагам. Ці процеси, вбудовані в мультифункційну екосистему офісних будівель або навіть цілих кампусів, – тема, що дає великі можливості для просторової організації.

Another important topic of the year was human resources in the framework of working spaces that favor communication, education, and leisure at the same time. Incorporated into the multifunctional ecosystem of office buildings or even larger campuses, these processes set an important agenda that gives vast opportunities for spatial organization.

З року в рік ми продовжуємо нарощувати своє розуміння про середовище для освіти, розширюючи свою бібліотеку просторових рішень, що реагують на різний педагогічний досвід. Важливим новим знанням був проєкт для наймолодших – ясла в Швейцарії. Ця робота дала можливість задуматися про дітей, які принципово відрізняються масштабом сприйняття світу. Це було дуже цікаве завдання – знайти гармонію простору, в якому існують маленькі й дорослі одночасно.

Year after year we keep on developing our understanding of educational environment, and we expand our thesaurus of spatial solutions reflecting diverse pedagogical experience. A crucial moment here was our project for the youngest ones - a creche in Switzerland. The project gave us a chance to think about children whose scale of perception is strikingly different. It was a very interesting task - to find spatial harmony where children and adults can coexist.

Також ми проєктували не тільки для людей. Один з головних реалізованих об’єктів в цьому році був проєкт, сфокусований на конях, їхньому комфорті й спорті, – новий незвичайний досвід роздумів в іншій ергономічній системі. Це був дуже особливий рік.

Besides, we didn’t design for people alone. One of our major built projects of the year was focused on horses, their comfort, and sport. For us, it meant a new level of reflexion in a different ergonomic system. It was undoubtedly a very special year.

Ми пробуємо нові форми взаємодії зовнішнього та внутрішнього. Разом із розвитком технологій та зміною клімату в бік потепління, з’явилося більше можливостей для відкритих просторів. Важливою відмінною рисою наших проєктів житлових будинків цього року, стало використання терас, що є великою цінністю для містян. Простеживши цю тенденцію, ми максимально задіяли в проєктах усі горизонтальні поверхні для проведення часу під відкритим небом. Другим важливим фактором формотворення стало спостереження за тим, як спільноти власників квартир все більше проявляють цікавість до нових форм соціалізації. Тому, практично завжди, на перших поверхах ми передбачаємо велику кількість просторів, що пов’язані зі спільним дозвіллям та освітою. Мешканці разом зможуть визначити призначення цих приміщень. Це допоможе створити умови для добросусідських відносин. Також в цей період з’являється попит на більш щільне

житло, і ми намагалися знайти нові форми компактності. Три будинки, спроєктовані нами в 2019 році, знаходяться на одній вулиці Харкова — Чернишевській. Ця частина міста почала трансформуватися на початку ХХ століття і продовжує змінюватися й сьогодні. На зміну одноповерховій та дрібномасштабній забудові прийшли дохідні шестиповерхові будинки епохи модерну, трохи пізніше — крупні фрагменти конструктивізму, а також з’явилися три нові будинки вже в цьому сторіччі. Було цікаво знайти нові підходи до діалогу в різноманітному оточенні. Також було неймовірно приємно повернутися в цьому році у свій «рідний» будинок — проєкт сімнадцятирічної давності, але вже в іншій ролі – архітекторів інтер’єру. У нас з’явилася можливість ще раз перевірити життєздатність планувальних просторових рішень, які ми закладали в проєкті житлового будинку Carat.

We experiment with new forms of interaction, both external and internal. As new technologies appear and the climate is getting warmer, we have more opportunities to enjoy open spaces. A important distinctive feature of our housing projects this year was the use of terraces, which is a valuable asset for urban dwellers. Following this trend, we made the most of all horizontal surfaces turning them into spaces for spending time outdoors. Another important factor in our design was connected with the fact that tenants who live in apartment houses are getting increasingly interested in new forms of socialization. That is why, the ground floor in almost all our projects is largely devoted to leisure activities and education. The tenants are encouraged to determine the function of these spaces collectively. This is expected to create favorable conditions for good neighbourly relations. This period also witnesses a growing demand for more compact dwelling, so we tried to find new forms of compactness.

Three buildings that we designed in 2019 are all located in one street - Chernyshevska - in Kharkiv. This part of the city started its transformation in the early XX century, and its evolution is still going on. Low-rise, small-scale development was replaced by six-storey Art Nouveau tenement houses that later gave way to massive Constructivist elements. Three new houses appeared here later, already in this century. So, it was an interesting challenge to find new approaches to dialogue in this miscellaneous surrounding. It was an incredible feeling to come back to our own design from seventeen years ago, but playing a different part - as interior architects. We saw it as an opportunity to once again test the viability of layout design solutions that we envisaged for Carat apartment house.

Переходячи в інший формат, поза тісним історичним контекстом міста, де все підпорядковується парцеляції, освітленості, щільності та ін., ми скористалися рідкісною можливістю створити будинок, що маркує простір як масштабом, так і формою.

The project belongs to a different format, which is different from the dense historic neighbourhoods where everything is governed by parcelling, lighting, density, etc. Regatta project was a rare chance to create a building that accentuates its location both through its scale and form.

Локація проєкту Regatta відрізана залізницею та автомобільною дорогою від житлової забудови. Види на річку Дніпро, мости, Поділ, ландшафтний парк річки Почайна та київські пагорби – унікальний та цінний ресурс. Об’ємне рішення будівель створює максимальне видове розкриття для квартир та прямий контакт із парком. У той же час стилобат формує острів для жителів над інтенсивними транспортними артеріями. Стилобат-острів, сформований паркінгом у центрі й суспільною функцією по його периметру, піднімає житлові поверхи над контекстом.

The plot is cut off from the neighbouring housing estate by the railroad and the motorway. Views of the Dnieper river, the bridges, Podil, the Pochaina landscape park, and Kyiv hills – this is a unique and valuable resource of the plot. The proposed volume offers maximum exposure to the great views and provides direct contact with the park. At the same time, the stylobate creates an inhabited island above the busy thoroughfares. The stylobate creates an island formed by the parking in its core and public facilities along its perimeter. The island raises the residential floors above the context.

Було важливо не розривати зв’язок з озером. Уздовж нього сформована пішохідна вулиця з зонами для активного відпочинку та рекреації, яка також пов’язана із внутрішнім подвір’ям, захищеним від шуму залізниці перфорованою шумопоглинаючою стіною. Внутрішні проїзди організовані паралельно проєктній магістралі.

It was a vital priority to preserve the current connection with the lake. A walking path is created along the banks with playgrounds and sports areas. It is also connected with the courtyard protected from the railroad noise by a perforated noise-absorbing wall. Driveways inside the complex run parallel to the proposed highway.

Новий простір для нової економіки. Рушієм трансформації став бум IT-сектору. Епоха змін задає нову площину і для архітектури. У проєкті Space Factor у відносно невеликому обсязі нам вдалося об’єднати максимальний спектр функцій: ресторан, коворкінг, традиційні офіси, камерний філармонійний хол, фітнес-центр, торгові приміщення та багатофункційні зали, а також відкриті публічні майданчики для заходів. Вкрай важливий аспект проєкту – терасування. Кожен поверх має свій простір “поза домом”, яке може бути місцем для роботи й зустрічей. Пірамідальність та терасування форми дає можливість підлаштуватися під взаємини з масштабом сусідніх будинків, знайти компроміс між освітленістю, як нової будівлі, так і всіх довколишніх. Це вдалося завдяки грі з формою трапеції.

Сама «шкіра» будівлі складається з вертикальних бетонних ламелей, що контролюють світлові потоки. Центральний офісний вестибюль об’єднує вулицю з новим суспільним амфітеатром у внутрішньому дворі, що трансформувався у відкриту дискусійну площадку: місце для роботи, відпочинку та концертів. Тут також знаходиться й літня тераса ресторану, куди співробітники будівлі можуть вийти на перерву і розслабитися. Будівля зберігає зв’язок із міським контекстом і різноманіттям форм життя по периметру. Цей район сформувався в кінці ХIX століття як квартал, в якому практично не було сервісів – тут домінувала житлова функція. Але з початком 90-х регіон все більше приваблює до себе торгівлю і стає майданчиком для принципово нової економіки.

A new space for a new economy. The revolution happened when the booming IT industry came into play. All those changes set a new agenda for the architecture among other things as well. Space Factor project was a great opportunity to saturate a relatively small volume with a maximum possible variety of functions. The functional program contains a restaurant, a co-working space, conventional offices, a concert hall, a fitness club, shops, multi-functional halls, and open-air spaces for public events. The use of terraces is a unique feature of the design. Each floor has its own “outside” space that can be used for working and organizing meetings. The pyramid shape and the terraces gave us a way to adapt to the scale of the neighbouring houses and find a compromise in terms of lighting both for the neighbours and the new building we propose. Leveraging the trapezoid form was the key.

The “skin” of the building is made of vertical concrete ribs that control the incoming sunlight. The central lobby connects the street with a new public amphitheater in the courtyard. It’s a new space for public debates, concerts, working, and relaxation. The open-air terrace of the restaurant is also here, where office workers can have a lunch break. Along its perimeter, the building has a strong connection with the surrounding urban context and everything it has to offer. This neighbourhood appeared in the late XIX century as a residential area that had hardly any shops or commercial facilities. Housing used to be the dominant function here. However, in the early 1990s the place became increasingly attractive for retail, so it gradually turned into a space for a totally new type of economy.

Перед початком планування ми ретельно проаналізували наявні пішохідні маршрути та потенційні зв’язки, які можуть сприяти розвиткові каналу, що проходить на захід від ділянки. Це дозволило нам знайти найбільш відповідну локацію для будівлі.

Before planning College in Sion, we thoroughly analyzed the current pedestrian traffic and potential connections that are likely to encourage the development of the canal to the west of the plot. This allowed us to find the most appropriate location for the school.

Для того, щоб зберегти співмасштабність, ми розмістили всі приміщення на чотирьох поверхах. Центральна вісь з’єднує вхід, головний атріум та тренажерний зал. Вікна верхнього освітлення орієнтовані на північ, забезпечуючи таким чином розсіяним світлом циркуляційні простори гімназії. Прозорі стіни спортзалу, який має окремий вхід, пропускають світло в коридори. На першому поверсі розташовані адміністрація та приміщення, які можна орендувати. Класні кімнати знаходяться по периметру на трьох поверхах.

To preserve the scale, all the premises are distributed across the four levels of the school. The central axis connects the entrance, the main atrium, and the gym. The skylight faces the north and invites soft daylight into the school passages. The gym with an individual entrance has transparent walls that bring daylight into the passages. On the ground floor there are administrative offices and rooms available for rent. Classrooms are located on the other three levels along the perimeter of the building.

Східний та південний фасади збираються з готових секцій. U-подібна форма дає вихід на балкон із класів і забезпечує захист від прямого сонячного світла. Частота вертикальних фасадних елементів на західному фасаді працює за таким же принципом, захищаючи класи від прямих сонячних променів в кінці дня. Такий самий метод був застосований і до північного фасаду.

The eastern and western facades are made of prefabricated elements. The U-shape allows classrooms to have access to balconies and protects them from aggressive direct sunlight. The spacing of vertical facade elements of the western facade follows this principle too, as they protect classrooms from direct sunlight in the afternoon. The same approach is used in the northern facade as well.

Головний вхід підкреслено дерев’яними елементами у вигляді колон і лавок для студентів школи. Місце для відпочинку розташоване на сході. Спортивні майданчики зміщені на північ, а місце під можливе розширення зарезервовано на південь від них.

The main entrance is articulated with the help of wooden elements – columns and benches that are actively used by the students. In the western part of the plot there is a space for recreation. Sports grounds are located in the north, and the area reserved for future territorial development extends south of them.

Важливим новим дослідженням 2019 року був проєкт для наймолодших – ясла в Швейцарії поблизу Женеви. Це було дуже цікаве завдання – знайти гармонію простору, в якому існують маленькі й дорослі одночасно.

A creche in Switzerland near Geneva - a project for the youngest ones - was an important new research of 2019. It was a very interesting task - to find spatial harmony where children and adults can coexist.

Головною ідеєю проєкту Crèche de Prangins стала гра масштабів. Масштаб усіх архітектурних елементів дублюється для дорослих та дітей. Це стосується вікон, сходів, меблів і тд.

The suggested design for Crèche de Prangins toys with a variety of scales. The scale of every architectural element is duplicated for adults and children. This applies to windows, stairs, furniture, etc.

Нові ясла є ще однією невеликою, але важливою ланкою в громадській інфраструктурі містечка. Для нас важливою метою було не тільки вбудуватися в існуючий контекст, а ще й не стати перешкодою для зв’язків та видових коридорів із сусідньої школи.

The new day-care center is another small, but very important link in the urban infrastructure of this little town. Our major goal was to enter the current context without disrupting existing connections and sightlines from the neighboring school.

Ми завжди раді співпраці з ініціативами від мистецтва. Це, на наш погляд, найбільш вдячний клієнт, з яким завжди дуже приємно працювати. Цього разу, це була молода театральна трупа «Прекрасні квіти» і колектив Бієнале молодого мистецтва, що проходила 2019 року в Харкові. Театральний перформанс «Alice in Wonderland» – сучасна інтерпретація парадоксального твору Льюїса Керола. У цій книзі перетинаються відразу декілька важливих станів, які не просто описати словами. Передати їх мовою кінематографу з усіма спецефектами й технологіями ще складніше, а поставити це в театрі для статичної сцени без механізації було вкрай важко. Практично всі куточки сцени були інтерпретовані й задіяні трупою у різноманітних сюжетах. Це забезпечило рух у просторі від авансцени в глибину. Відбувається постійна зміна масштабів та героїв, які задають феноменальність «керолівських» перевтілень.

Ми поєднали три компоненти: традицію пізнього ренесансу з посиленою перспективою, зворотню перспективу візантійської ікони та частково конструктивістську мову. Вийшло парадоксальне поєднання протилежних масштабів і точок зору, що знаходяться в один час, в одному місці. Воно накладається на досить рутинну для багатьох городян атмосферу бару або кафе, додаючи нотку повсякденності в площину тягучого мінливого простору. «Аліса в країні чудес» – напевно одна з найбільш феноменальних книг за останні 200 років. Її обговорюють квантові фізики, психологи й художники у нескінченних читаннях, відкриваючи нові неймовірні взаємозв’язки. До такого снаряду ми підходили дуже обережно, тим більше без досвіду подібних сценографічних робіт. Хоча, будь-яка архітектура є, у певній мірі, сценою театру.

We are always happy to collaborate with cultural initiatives. We think they make the most grateful clients who are always pleasant to work with. This time our clients were a young theatrical group “The Beautiful Flowers” and the team of Biennale of Young Art 2019 that took place in Kharkiv. The theatrical performance “Alice in Wonderland” is a modern interpretation of the paradoxical book by Lewis Carroll. The book has several important transformations which are difficult to describe with words. To portray them with the help of cinematography, with all its special effects and technologies, is possible, but it is even more complicated. But putting in on a static stage without mechanical devices was extremely challenging. The actors used and interpreted almost every corner of the stage in various scenes. This helped to organize movement from the proscenium upstage. There is a constant change of scales and characters that reflect the remarkable “Carrollian” transformations.

We used a combination of three elements: tradition of the Late Renaissance with its enhanced perspective, the inverted perspective of Byzantine icons, and a bit of Constructivism. As a result, we have a surprising mix of contradictory scales and viewpoints that coexist at the same time and place. The atmosphere of a bar or a cafe in the background which is rather common for most city dwellers adds a bit of humdrum to the viscous and constantly changing space. ‘Alice in Wonderland’ written by Lewis Carroll is probably one of the most remarkable books in the last 200 years. It is discussed by quantum physicists, psychologists, and artists who keep reinterpreting the book, never failing to dig up new and surprising details. We approached this charged “missile” with great caution, especially considering that we have no experience in stage design. Anyway, what is architecture if not a stage in a way.

Замість пам’ятника – Людина.

Monument gives way to People.

Концепт-проект «Інфобокс» розроблений для Бієнале молодого мистецтва 2019 у Харкові. Головна ідея павільйону в тому, що людина може піднятися на п’єдестал, стати на місце колишнього пам’ятника Леніну й подивитися на місто та свою роль у ньому по-новому.

We developed the Infobox concept in the framework of Biennale of Young Art 2019 in Kharkiv. The main idea of the pavilion is to allow anybody to climb the pedestal, take the place of the former Lenin monument, and have a look at the city and one’s role in it from a new perspective.

Після Другої світової війни частина плацу перед Держпромом перетворилася на стихійний лісовий фрагмент – сад. Композиція проєкту сформована на осі трьох важливих символів міста: Держпрому, місця, що звільнилося після повалення пам’ятника Леніну, і саду в центрі площі. Дивним збігом обставин стала співзвучність структури харківського майдану Свободи з концепцією самої Бієнале: «Здається, я заходжу в наш сад».

After WWII, the square in front of Gosporm partly transformed into a spontaneous garden that looked like a forest. Compositionally, the designed pavilion lies on the same straight line together with three other important elements: Gosprom – the main landmark of the city; the place that has been vacant ever since the statue of Lenin was toppled; and the garden that occupies the central part of the square. It’s an amazing coincidence that the layout of the Freedom (Svobody) square in Kharkiv is in sync with the Biennale’s concept – “Looks like I’m entering our garden”.

Welcome on board! Давно назрівала ідея створити стіл великого розміру з дуже тонким торцем, що поєднав би в собі легкість та масштабність. В даному випадку довжина становить три метри. Пошук форми привів нас до кораблебудівної техніки: структури шпангоутів та бортів. Цей образ являє собою подорож, певну кают-компанію. Збільшення шпангоутів ближче до кіля посередині, дали можливість досягти, з одного боку, дуже високої міцності, з іншого — візуальної легкості за рахунок асоціації з плавними лініями корабля. Ми не впевнені, але є відчуття, що він буде дуже добре плавати.

It has been our long-standing ambition to create a large table with a very thin end face that would unite lightness and grandeur. In this case the span is as big as three meters. Our search for ideas brought us to shipbuilding technique, i.e. the structure of ribs and boards. The whole look and feel of the table makes you think of voyages and saloons on a ship. The ribs get thicker as they approach the keel in the middle, which adds strength on the one hand and ensures visual lightness on the other, callings up associations with the gentle curves of a ship. We are not absolutely sure, but we have a feeling that it will hold on water very well.

Харків — місто, сформоване безліччю кампусів. У певному сенсі, він сам як кампус. Його структура складається з різноманітних згустків, між якими існують деякі розріджені зони. У Харкові було реалізовано багато утопій ХХ століття. Частина з них показала стійкість, інші переживають складні часи. Є підстави для нового випробування цієї дуже характерної типології кампусів, пов’язаних з університетами, заводами, військовими академіями, дослідницькими центрами та ін.

Проект цікавий тим, що він є самодостатнім кампусом, який вбудований у ще один кампус Харківського фізикотехнічного інституту: одного з найстаріших і найбільших центрів фізичної науки в Україні, заснованого ще в 20-і роки. Це була одна з досить відомих дослідницьких інституцій в Радянському союзі.

Ми використали цілий ряд планувальних структур, об’єднавши різні техніки: сітчасті, лінійні, аморфні вітальні плями й вільну організацію. Забудова прилягає з одного боку до гольф-клубу й ніби добудовується до поля для гольфу по периметру. Пейзаж з водоймами й пагорбами залишається недоторканим.

Superior Valley підключається до вже сформованого району П’ятихаток і є його розширенням. Новий кампус орієнтований на сучасні індустрії й перш за все на зростаючий IT сектор. Після організації такої інтервенції, ми дуже сподівалися, що вони заживуть єдиним цілим, одним організмом, разом із новою спортивно-курортною зоною (полем для гольфу й

Інфраструктура нашого нового кампусу має форму розкритої руки. Зелені “пальці” поділяють основну ділянку на 5 різних груп. Дуже важливим фактором була взаємодія відкритих житлових дворів з луками, полями та лісами, пошук гармонії й нових зв’язків рекреаційного та забудованого простору.

Кампус розрахований на 10 000 потенційних мешканців. Перед нами стояло непросте завдання — запрограмувати спосіб життя всього містечка, передбачити сценарії й алгоритми використання просторів з різними функціями: житловою, робочою, торговою, освітньою, спортивною, рекреаційною та ін.

Kharkiv is a city formed by many campuses. In a sense, it’s like a campus itself. Its structure is made up of all sorts of clumps with some sparse zones between them. Many utopias of the twentieth century were realized in Kharkiv. Some of them have shown stability, while others are undergoing difficult times. There is a reason for a new prove-out of this very characteristic typology of campuses that are associated with universities, factories, military academies, research centers, etc.

This would provoke a rediscovery of the qualities of the established environment.

The Superior Valley project is exciting as it is a self-sufficient campus that is integrated into another campus of the Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology: one of the oldest and largest centers of physical science in Ukraine founded in the 20s. It was one of the most prominent research institutions in the Soviet Union.

We used a variety of planning structures, combining various techniques: mesh, linear, amorphous vital spots, and free organization. The site is adjacent to the golf club on one side and sort of being built up around the perimeter of the golf course. The landscape with ponds and hills remains untouched.

Superior Valley joins the already established Piatikhatky district and is an extension of it. The new campus is focused on modern industries and, above all, the growing IT sector. After organizing such an intervention, we hoped that they would stay as a whole, one organism, jointly with a new sports and resort area (a golf course and a tennis club).

The campus is designed for 10,000 potential residents. We had a difficult task — to program the way of life of the entire town, to provide scenarios and algorithms for the use of spaces with a variety of functions: residential, work, shopping, educational, sports, recreational, etc.

The infrastructure of our new campus is in the shape of an open palm. Green fingers divide the main area into 5 different groups. A very important factor here was the interaction between open courtyards and meadows, forests, and fields, as well as the search for harmony and new connections between recreational spaces and built environment.

У мальовничій місцевості на північній околиці міста протікає річка Харків. На високому правому березі розкинулися зелені пагорби, а пологіший лівий берег зайнятий лугом, де знаходиться кінно-спортивний клуб. Близькість річки й рельєф ділянки істотно вплинули на формування комплексу. Основні будівлі розміщені на верхньому плато, тоді як ділянки, що лежать ближче до води й тому потерпають від повеней, виділено під лугові левади.

The Kharkiv river flows amidst the picturesque surroundings on the northern outskirts of the city. Its high right bank is covered with green hills, while its lower left bank is a meadow which is now home to an equestrian club. The vicinity of the river and the topography of the plot had a major impact on the complex layout. All the main buildings are placed on the elevated plateau, whereas the low-lying areas which are prone to flooding are transformed into paddocks.

Комплекс знаходиться неподалік від окружної дороги. Від шуму машин його захищають яблуневий сад і об’єм критого манежу. Углиб ділянки від приміщення відходять три «пальці» стаєнь, за ними — левади й відкритий манеж із глядацькою трибуною. Праворуч від адміністративного блоку знаходяться спеціальні споруди для тренувань.

The complex is not far from the ring road. The traffic noise is managed with the help of an apple orchard and the volume of the covered riding hall. Three “digits” of the stables abut on the riding hall. They are followed by the paddocks and the open-air riding hall with a spectator stand. To the right of the administrative block there are special structures for horse training.

Фронтони адміністративного блоку та стаєнь виконано з необроблених дубових колод. Вони підкреслюють тектоніку, акцентують вхідні портали й контролюють світло, що потрапляє всередину приміщення.

The gables of the administrative block and the stables are made of rough oak trunks. They emphasize the tectonics, accentuate the entrances, and control the sunlight that gets inside the building.
