Chairman’s Message
Attitude Amazing projects have empowered and courageous clients, working with masterful designers using the best materials, methods and suppliers. Insight Back in 2007, I observed a skew in the design market that saw more than 90% of the conversations around design coming from practices, with very little being heard from the demand side - the commissioners. What were the needs of commissioners and how did they think about design?
4
Vision DRIVENxDESIGN was founded to engage with both sides - supply and demand - to celebrate the driving dynamic between the courage to commission a project and the courage to propose a solution. Methods Awards were our first channel to assist that goal, later adding design summits, project films and design executive dinners. After 10 short years, we have created a global movement for a new era of design, an era bedded in the boardroom, driving economic and cultural returns.
Executive Design The rise of executive design took hold in 2014. To use a tech-industry term, we saw a pivot, seeing scores of companies placing design as a key strategic driver, resulting in eight out of the ten most valuable companies by market cap being driven by design. The Experience Economy These industry leaders know that their market value is based in the experience of their customers. Technology is the enabler, experience is the value driver.
Respect Thanks to the 6,000+ brands and 2,500+ studio collaborators, and the millions of design-inspired that we’ve reached. Future Welcome to those just joining us on growing the impact of human centred design. The next 10 years will be exciting, exhilarating and rewarding. Most importantly they’ll be driven by design.
Founder & Awards Chair, DRIVENxDESIGN Mark Bergin

DRIVENxDESIGN Executives Club
Welcome to our loyalty program – recognising significant community contributions. The Design Executives Club is a global network of likeminded design leaders, all working to grow the sophistication and excellence of design in their organisations. The club’s goal is to help address design executives’ needs through providing utility beyond the awards/recognition programs. Throughout the year, club members are invited to exclusive dinners, events and forums to collaborate and share insights, providing peer on peer networking on a global scale. DRIVENxDESIGN.com/DEC
DRIVENxDESIGN Executive Briefings We have been providing strategy/ insight briefings to major brands and studios across the globe for 10 years. The awards engine sees over 7,000 design projects per year, providing unique insights into the macro trends and innovations in the design industry. Since launching the NOW Awards, we have rolled our insights into a quarterly global briefing program across eight markets. DRIVENxDESIGN Executive Tours Since beginning our regular global tours we have noticed a trend – people want to join in. This began with the Design Summits, initially attracting people from across the globe, some travelling to one city, others turning up repeatedly. Being the hospitable people we are, we wanted to turn this coincidence into a definite thing. This year we have five tours before year end, so join us and your fellow design executive peers. The Jury
The NOW Awards
The design award juries are formed from a global panel of over 200 design leaders sourced from Melbourne, Sydney, Hong Kong, Berlin, London, Reykjavik, New York, Chicago and San Francisco.
NOW is a global, monthly, curated design awards program that seeks out and recognises extraordinary design projects.
2018 sees a new phase where all programs are being judged by out of town jury members, minimising potential conflicts and expanding our global view for the projects.
The awards provide timely recognition and industry insights across the global market. Nominations are sourced through recommendations from our 200+ global panel and nominated projects. The nominations deadline is the 10th of each month.
This also gives us the opportunity to promote 40 local design leaders into global markets – another way to extend Melbourne design to the global stage.
Winners are announced on the first Thursday of every month, alongside a podcast discussing the GOLD winners.

St Andrews Beach Brewery Project Commissioner Jane and Andrew Purchase Creator Ewert Leaf GOLD AWARD
Team Ana Calic Toby Ewert
The former training home of Makybe Diva has been transformed into a hospitality venue that emanates a harmonious integration of old and new. With a new lease of life, the existing sites infrastructure has been redefined as a 10-hectare brewery featuring a cellar door, tasting rooms and bars, as well as a variety of indoor and outdoor seating options; accommodating social gatherings and group functions. The unique sites context is celebrated through the conversion of horse stables to intimate booths, that open to a bustling courtyard. These booths have been named after award winning Melbourne Cup horses, subtly connecting the heritage of the building with the user and providing an intimate place for small groups to relax on long afternoons.

Broo Brewery Project Commissioner Broo Beer Creator Decibel Architecture GOLD AWARD
Team Dylan Brady Toby Pond Akshay Rajan Matthew Austin Shelley Xu James Bickford Arthur Chen
Decibel’s proposition is founded on the idea that Broo at Ballarat will be more than just a factory, should be more than simply a place of business, and must be more than another public venue. Their scheme knits the brewery, landscape and public spaces into a place and philosophy that the local community can be part of and proud of and will drive a regional and global cultural engagement in sustainable brewing best practice. The design proposes a building and landscape strategy that allows for 100% renewable sources of energy to be generated on site, all waste water to be treated on site, and One Planet certification.

The new London Hotel site features two levels of restaurants, a large function venue and luxury apartments. The relaxed, bayside context has informed the architecture, with clean lines, expansive balconies and a wellarticulated corner. The orientation of the apartments allow them to harness the benefits of the natural environment including natural light, passive solar gain and expansive views. The extensively glazed restaurant activates the street edge whilst the balcony above provides passive surveillance. The finishes palette is sympathetic to the surrounding architecture, combining brickwork, raw concrete, charcoal metalwork and timber soffits. The interior spaces will be treated as an extension of the facade, combining natural textures with luxury finishes and details.

Williamstown Town Hall Project Commissioner Hobson’s Bay City Council Creator k20 Architecture GOLD AWARD
Team Theodore Kerlidis - Project Director Daniel Bright - Project Leader
The project is a restoration and conservation of the Williamstown Town Hall building that was originally constructed in 1918. Over the years, the building has been repurposed and refurbished and the “veneer” of the building had become concealed over time. It was not originally intended that this Town Hall would be remodelled in the way it has been, however it was soon recognised that the building had reached its technical life end. As time went by, the building was falling apart and over eight years k20 Architecture was required to become more involved. The purpose was to restore and conserve the building, so that its life would be extended for another 100 years.

Initially trading as an online store, we took Milligram from a digital space into a physical one. Their first bricks and mortar shop had to reflect their style and appeal to their design-savvy clientele while remaining flexible enough to evolve as they found their feet in a retail environment. Their flagship store offers a completely unique shopping experience. Diverse customisation options provide a level of personal involvement not usually found in a retail store. Customers can use the space in their own unique way which encourages a longer stay and greater interaction with Milligram’s products. Although it exhibits a level of design not usually seen in stationery stores, its nude palette and warm timbers are very inviting and inclusive.

Phoenix Rooftop is a green refuge in the unlikeliest of places. 30-stories high, on an exposed, yet spectacular site in the heart of Melbourne. This garden in the sky allows two down-sizing professionals to retain the joy of outdoor living as they transition from the suburbs to the city. Visible to thousands of officeworkers every day, this project is also a billboard for rooftop gardens. The message reads, ‘our buildings can be greener, both literally and figuratively’. The separate, yet interconnected zones ensure the rooftop is multipurpose space that’s suited to a range of activities, from cocktail parties to intimate family dinners. Functionally, the rooftop provides a kitchenette, storage and, importantly, a green space in the middle of the city.

RMIT’s New Academic Street is a physical manifestation of a new tertiary education user experience, and cements the university as a key part of Melbourne’s architectural fabric. Positioned at the top of Melbourne’s Swanston Street, RMIT’s campus has helped to define how people move through the CBD. Büro North were engaged by Lyons Architecture and RMIT to design an intuitive, engaging, and iconic wayfinding experience for students in collaboration with the broader design team of Lend Lease, Minifie van Schaik Architects, NMBW, Harrison White, and Maddison Architects. Our designed solution embeds wayfinding information to create highly porous and navigable space, which opens up the heart of RMIT’s City Campus to the rest of the CBD.

GOLD AWARD
Team Yaniv Kaufman - Project Manager Justin Zakis - DSP Engineer Leah Heiss from RMIT University - Designer
Until Facett, hearing aid design remained fundamentally unchanged for decades, despite persistent usability flaws. Years of clinical research and client feedback showed us that many people find changing batteries too fiddly, and don’t want to change them in public. And people still worry about the appearance of hearing aids and whether they make them look old. The brief for Facett was to create a beautiful hearing aid that people would be proud to wear while simultaneously solving key usability issues—particularly for those with visual acuity and dexterity problems, and reducing ongoing maintenance costs.

The new Manning, Doncaster brand serves to highlight the building’s union between the natural and urban environments, as well as offer a premium and established to appeal to an affluent, local Asian-Australian target market. The materiality of Manning was a really important part of the proposition. Everything had been specifically chosen in order to portray the residences as unique, bespoke and prestigious. The plants used in our imagery referenced the types of timber within the building. We also used this timber to create frames for the images in our display suite. Textures and tones from tiles and stone were used as backgrounds within our printed collateral and we even recreated one of the textures on the cover of our brochure.

Thomas Chipman Organic Chips packaging Project Commissioner Yarra Valley Snack Foods Creator Davidson Branding Team Alan Morrison - Design Director Grant Davidson - Strategy Amelia Ropé - Project Manager Alan Morrison - Designers Matt Forbes - Finished Artist Yarra Valley Snack Foods - Writer
Over time packaging for the Thomas Chipman has strayed in slightly different directions with each new segment introduced. To help fulfil the aspiration of being ‘the most loved organic chip brand in both the health and mainstream supermarket aisles’ a brand repositioning and revitalisation was required. The new design strongly calls out the brand’s organic credentials and works cohesively across the range of corn, potato and vegetable chips. The design was carefully crafted so that it could work successfully in the health and mainstream aisles. Using the Thomas Chipman portrait as a strong brand mnemonic vastly improved shelf stand out. A ‘Chipman wink’ GIF was also created to spread the fun across social media and digital channels.

LUMES was designed to surprise and delight visitors, creating a sense of discovery where interest and colour reveals itself from behind the timber panelling. The goal was not to reveal a ‘picture’ or a distinct ‘image’ but to reveal a moving canvas of colour and light felt by visitors and staff moving through the department. The joint goal with Cabrini Hospital and DesignInc was to maximise the space with interactive experiences that children could intuitively use. LUMES offers a digital and physical world that combines seamlessly, immersing children in a positive digital experience that truly feels like a dynamic part of their environment.

Monash University Guidelines Project Commissioner Monash University Creator Büro North GOLD AWARD
Team Soren Luckins - Creative Director Christopher Thorpe - Wayfinding Strategy and System Design Meredith Earls - Design Direction and Concept Development Ashleigh Adams - Industrial Design Justine Lesmana - Graphic Design
Monash University is one of Australia’s largest universities, and was struggling to create a consistent user experience across it’s buildings. The lack of a usable and simple standard meant the University was creating different ways of using each of their 72 facilities. Further, the implementation and design costs of their wayfinding signage was prohibitively high, leaving less money to spend on high quality education facilities for their students. Working with Monash University’s Building and Planning division, the new Monash University Guidelines create a unified internal wayfinding and signage system for use across all of the University’s facilities, and deliver this as a document which could be used by everyone from architects through to faculty members.

Monash University’s Low FODMAP Diet™ was already changing the lives of IBS sufferers, but there was great potential to do more. With millions of people to reach at home and abroad, Monash University needed to raise the profile of their revolutionary research, bring a raft of offline systems online, and give their locally successful app a leg up to reach international markets. For this, they needed more than a pretty website, they needed a website with international appeal developed to incorporate an ecosystem of connected parts and custom componentry, and they needed it in under three months.

A subsidiary of leading lighting solutions provider Aglo Systems, Mondolux is new to the Australian lighting market. The brand boasts a full range of on-trend, quality lighting products, and its locallybased warehouse eliminates the lengthy delivery times many of Mondolux’s competitors face when shipping products from overseas. Evolution 7 were tasked with designing a premium, polished website that both showcased Mondolux’s products and catered to the needs and busy schedules of its core customers. Because the website serves as a primary marketing tool for the brand, design, functionality, and a smart, smooth user experience were critical for success.

Established in 2009, AEMO is Australia’s independent energy markets and power systems operator, responsible for the day-to-day management of the wholesale energy market, as well as providing critical planning, forecasting and power systems information and security advice. Despite this, few people outside of the energy industry knew of AEMO’s existence. Their power was being overwhelmed by commercial producers, suppliers, retailers, politicians and the media. AEMO approached Hardhat for a digital solution to this challenge, that had to accelerate their arrival into the conversation on Australia’s energy and create a platform that would engage new audiences. 104
