Chairman’s Message

In 2021 we celebrated the sixth year of the Hong Kong Design Awards. Amidst the ongoing tumult of 2021, it was fantastic to see so many courageous, excellent and diverse design projects entered into this year’s awards. We started this program to recognise the creators and commissioners behind the outstanding design-lead projects within the commercial, community and government sector that are leading us into a better future. We are now well over a year into this global pandemic, but things are no less chaotic. Social, political and economic upheaval have become the familiar state of affairs and we have been thrust into an expedited process of learning and unlearning. The world is in flux and now more than ever the focus needs to shift towards a circular future that involves a sustainable environment, social equity and a strong economy.

4

These are the pillars of a better future, and it is the designer’s role to bring us there faster. Much of this process is about getting acquainted with discomfort and harnessing the power of uncertainty to help us become better problem seekers and solvers. 2021 is all about being comfortable with the uncomfortable and those who are willing to do so will be the ones who thrive in this new era. Over the last eleven years, DRIVENxDESIGN has worked tirelessly to establish the world’s largest network of Design Award Programs. In 2021, our twelfth year, we have been continuing to evolve the awards to best reflect the future we are interested in creating. That is why we have introduced the Better Future category, which rewards projects that tackle issues of economy, environment, equity, or all three. We want to celebrate and recognise those who are excelling in these areas by creating projects that are actively accelerating us into a better future faster.

Hong Kong Design Awards 2021

This year we have also been continuing to grow The Design Exec Club. The DEC is a continually expanding global network of leading design professionals who share a unified passion for a better future. As a global hub for collaboration and shared insights, the Design Exec Club’s goal is to address the needs of design executives and grow the sophistication and excellence of design within organisations. Fuelled by unchartered and exciting conversations, we enable current and future leaders through knowledge exchange, networking and an impressive leader’s toolkit. The members of the Design Exec Club are united by a common goal for a Better Future. It is all about how we can ensure the best possible future for our grandchildren’s grandchildren. Since the beginning of the pandemic, we have gathered some of the leading executive minds from across our Australian, British, European, American and Asian markets to record our weekly Town Hall episodes.

By the end of 2021, we will have published 85 Town Hall episodes, each full of questions and insights that respond to the constantly evolving world around us. Each week the conversation also continues with the Better Future SPOTLIGHT, a series of one-on-one, in-depth discussions with design executives that shine a light on the design individuals that are true catalysts for change. Through both our DRIVENxDESIGN and Design Exec Club platforms we are proud to recognise and reward the thought leadership that is going to create a thriving circular economy. We want to celebrate those with the courage to make it a reality. Again, congratulations, thank you for being a part of our vision and keep maintaining your courageous stance.

Famous for its iconic skyline and cityscape, not many people know about Hong Kong’s unique nature reserves and park culture whereby 70% of the city is, in fact, covered by greenery. With this unique nature of greeneries so close to the city, we sought to connect this significant correlation between ‘City and Parks’.

CBRE’s Hong Kong office exemplifies the ‘City and Parks’ concept. Design elements are derived from the contrast between Hong Kong’s skyscrapers with its country parks, nature reserves and urban gardens.

Hong Kong micro café increases 50% of its space by swinging a pair of pivot doors

The shop is only 8.8sqm while the minimum size of food counter in Hong Kong needs to be 6sqm. That means the space reserved for customers would only have 2.8sqm. Thanks to the licensing area that the landlord actually allows the shop to spill out its seating 1.8m away from the shopfront, that would let the café gain 4.6sqm more for the loose furniture.

The studio has increased Black Sugar Coffee 50% of its space, which used to be only 2.6m wide and 3.4m long, by swinging a pair of pivot doors.

A pair of big pivot terrazzo doors has become the key elements in the design to link up the cool exterior to the warm maple wood interior. While the shopkeeper opens the shop every day, the big swinging gesture has become a new ritual to the customers. 32

In response to windows only on one side and mundane space, we create perfect bonds between environment, space, and life. We reorganize the layout to avoid a disconnection between smaller units and the environment. Through architectural approaches, we create appropriate living areas and visually extended scales within limited spaces. By using gray bricks, we integrate an epitome of the city for the relationship between architecture and environment.

In this case, the homeowner likes to have sufficient indoor sunlight and adequate air convection; since the initial planning stage, he hopes to reduce the thick partition walls and cabinets, and use the vertical penetration layout method to let the sunlight enter the room and penetrate into the corners. The overall layout is simple, focusing on functionality, removing complexity, and giving the space a sense of stability and comfort.

The key for this interior design project is to integrate 4+1 respective styles—the common area and four bedrooms—into a holistic appearance. Attentive to details, the designer creates a harmonious style through techniques like the connecting of Eastern images with the decorative moldings and accentuating the dragon-shaped marble pattern, matching teal leather and turquoise textiles in both common and personal spaces, and using similar gold accents throughout the whole unit. The designer successfully gives this residence a diverse yet coherent appearance, and satisfies all family members’ distinctive tastes and preferences.

The design should be personalised for each family member, beyond just catering to their aesthetic taste and preferences. For example, the stylish black bedroom is for adult son and earth-toned colour (elegant master bedroom) for retired couple. MILKY WAY is a high-end wedding store that aims to be dreamy, inclusive and creative. The interior design is inspired by the hem and fishtail of the wedding dresses, this inspiration is also imbedded in the flowy doubled-layered light belt that goes around the celling of the entire property. To bring in some ocean elements, the customized-made light is in shape of abstract fish. The usage of white and gold combined with the arched lines and the hidden light belt presents the overwhelming sense of futurism and also a relaxing vibe.

The series of Chinese New Year collaterals were specially designed for the wealth management bank, Bank Julius Baer and can be used as both festive gifts and collectible items. The design concept inspired by Chinese porcelain dates to the historical tradition of collecting Chinese porcelain objects as they were considered to be a form of fine art. Aptly named “Imperial Porcelain” for its ties to the ancient imperial family tradition, the series consists of a pouch, paper carrier bag, red packets and carrier box, adorned with motifs that are commonly found on these fine porcelain art. Lotus flowers and peaches represent purity and longevity and tie in strongly with well-wishes and common greetings used during the festive Chinese New Year season. They celebrate at once; a rich Chinese culture and history repackaged in modern presentation and represent the Bank’s desire to honour and respect diverse and different cultures and its deep appreciation for it.

Hong Kong Design Awards 2021

One of the most common and detrimental accident amongst children is their fingers being trapped in doors. We offer the most innovative and sustainable door safety solution to prevent trapped fingers in door and avoid injuries. And we are proud to invent the first Finger Protected Door in the world. Unlike traditional ‘Quick Fix’ protective solution such as C-shaped device made of foam for door hinges and finger shield, which could easily fall off, are less durable and could not be used for fire rated doors that require closing. The concept of our Finger Protected Door is to provide a long term sustainable and durable solution for a life-long finger protection that applicable for all type of doors, including fire rated doors. We achieve this by integrating the protective device within the door frame and door body; the embedded device means the hinges are completely sealed off and therefore fingers (or any objects) would not be in contact with the hinges, thus prevent fingers being trapped in door to prevent injuries. 79
