Chairman’s Message

In 2021 we celebrated the third year of the Brisbane Design Awards. Amidst the ongoing tumult of 2021, it was fantastic to see so many courageous, excellent and diverse design projects entered into this year’s awards. We started this program to recognise the creators and commissioners behind the outstanding design-lead projects within the commercial, community and government sector that are leading us into a better future. We are now well over a year into this global pandemic, but things are no less chaotic. Social, political and economic upheaval have become the familiar state of affairs and we have been thrust into an expedited process of learning and unlearning. The world is in flux and now more than ever the focus needs to shift towards a circular future that involves a sustainable environment, social equity and a strong economy.

4

These are the pillars of a better future, and it is the designer’s role to bring us there faster. Much of this process is about getting acquainted with discomfort and harnessing the power of uncertainty to help us become better problem seekers and solvers. 2021 is all about being comfortable with the uncomfortable and those who are willing to do so will be the ones who thrive in this new era. Over the last eleven years, DRIVENxDESIGN has worked tirelessly to establish the world’s largest network of Design Award Programs. In 2021, our twelfth year, we have been continuing to evolve the awards to best reflect the future we are interested in creating. That is why we have introduced the Better Future category, which rewards projects that tackle issues of economy, environment, equity, or all three. We want to celebrate and recognise those who are excelling in these areas by creating projects that are actively accelerating us into a better future faster.

Shanghai Design Awards 2020

This year we have also been continuing to grow The Design Exec Club. The DEC is a continually expanding global network of leading design professionals who share a unified passion for a better future. As a global hub for collaboration and shared insights, the Design Exec Club’s goal is to address the needs of design executives and grow the sophistication and excellence of design within organisations. Fuelled by unchartered and exciting conversations, we enable current and future leaders through knowledge exchange, networking and an impressive leader’s toolkit. The members of the Design Exec Club are united by a common goal for a Better Future. It is all about how we can ensure the best possible future for our grandchildren’s grandchildren. Since the beginning of the pandemic, we have gathered some of the leading executive minds from across our Australian, British, European, American and Asian markets to record our weekly Town Hall episodes.

By the end of 2021, we will have published 85 Town Hall episodes, each full of questions and insights that respond to the constantly evolving world around us. Each week the conversation also continues with the Better Future SPOTLIGHT, a series of one-on-one, in-depth discussions with design executives that shine a light on the design individuals that are true catalysts for change. Through both our DRIVENxDESIGN and Design Exec Club platforms we are proud to recognise and reward the thought leadership that is going to create a thriving circular economy. We want to celebrate those with the courage to make it a reality. Again, congratulations, thank you for being a part of our vision and keep maintaining your courageous stance.

Chan Town is an AAAA National Scenic Area with a total planned area of almost 7,000 hectares We’ve been hoping that there could be a showroom space to focus on display of the planning of the town and its development blueprint. We have visited the town many times, and always been touched by the grand natural landscape and scenery while wandering around. Therefore, we intended to design a piece of architecture emerging from and then being integrated back into the natural landscape, hoping that the architecture does not disturb the senses of time and space of the site.

With this project, Greentown China has completed its three contemporary project series and has committed to creating the works with strategic importance. At the unremarkable corner is the entrance. The hotel is composed of two functional groups. The north building group consists of supporting public facilities and concentrated guestrooms, while the south zone is a villa guestroom area. The designers cleverly make use of a 50-meter-long civic greenbelt near the main entrance, which is situated on the south side of Xinyuan Avenue, to create an open but also enclosed Chinese-style entrance space, thus producing a secluded atmosphere. Separate accesses to catering area and villa guestroom area are specially designed to facilitate flow dispersion.

This new holiday house on Minjerribah embodies calmness simplicity, so its occupants can enjoy being immersed in nature at the beach. Influenced by local campsites – where cooking, gathering and sleeping zones are united under a large tarpaulin – the house incorporates essential functionality in a compact footprint, beneath an elegant butterfly roof. Built for three families, it comfortably accommodates up to 10 people. Sleeping and bathing spaces are deliberately small, while the communal area is generous and opens up to views of the sea and surrounding bushland. This openness enhances the sense of being “on holidays”. The local Jandai word Moongalba, or “sitting down place”, beautifully describes the simplicity of spending time here. This is a deliberately simple house that inspires a feeling of escape from everyday life, where people can spend time in nature with friends and family, just like the Minjerribah campsites and beach shacks of old.

The yard depicts an elegant Chinese ink wash painting where cranes rest or flap wings on water surface, and acts as a prelude to the interior of the sales center. The design extracts classical elements of Bvlgari rings, and translated them into distinctive circular structures. The design adopts modern approaches to reinterpret Oriental elegance in the era, while at the same time blending Chinese ink wash aesthetics into the space.

GND starts from “bounded” to “unbounded” design concept in the landscape creation of Foshan Meisha Bilingual School. In terms of external design, the square in the campus opens to the city, promoting the integration between them; while in terms of internal design, the form of combining “gallery, courtyard, lane and platform” in Chinese traditional architecture is adopted for creating a borderless space integrating architecture, landscape and interior as a whole. Through making full use of space, a multi-dimensional space for learning, living and interaction is hence created.

Adviceline Injury lawyers is a leading personal injury practice that has been helping Victorians get their lives back on track for more than 50 years. The firm had a website that was clunky and difficult for content administrators to update. Navigation had also become very difficult for users, and the site was in need of a design refresh. This project involved a complete rebuild of the site, beginning with a content audit and strategy to redesign the site’s information architecture. The outcome was a vastly simplified and more intuitive information architecture and a much cleaner design that more appropriately reflects the firm’s positioning in the market.

As Australia’s first industry super fund, LUCRF Super is no stranger to leading the way. When it partnered with Luminary to rebuild its website, LUCRF Super’s vision was more than just a new site. True to its philosophy of always putting members first, it wanted to completely redefine the industry benchmark for online user experience. At the heart of this project was a very simple mission: ‘to create a friendly and helpful experience for members and employers’. The key objectives were also fairly straightforward: to drive member retention through an improved digital experience, and to support growth through direct member acquisition. What was remarkable, however, was the extent to which LUCRF Super was prepared to go to comprehend and deliver on the needs of its audience.

Cancer Council is the nation’s leading cancer charity, and the only Australian charity working across every aspect of every cancer – from research to prevention and support. The national office, Cancer Council Australia (CCA), had not updated its website since 2012. As a result, its presentation, content and structure were outdated and in need of a major overhaul. With an ageing CMS, security, stability and ease of maintenance had also become problematic. Rather than attempting to conduct a ‘bandaid fix’ of the existing site, CCA decided to start afresh, switching platforms and completely rebuilding the site.

The brand engaged Luminary to help it bring its vision to life. The result was Ivory Coat Food Check – an interactive tool to help pet owners work out the amount and type of food to feed their dog or cat, based on a range of factors including age, breed, size and activity level. Food Check has been extremely well received in the market and has successfully raised brand awareness for Ivory Coat. Brisbane is a city that has been slowly, but resolutely, working its way from near ‘country-cousin’ obscurity to ‘6th on the list of world’s most liveable cities’ superstardom. The Kangaroo Point peninsula, where Thornton is being built, sits just across the river from the city with a waters-edge ‘grandstand view’ of this remarkable transformation from sleepy little town to new world city. The Thornton Brochure needed to be less brochure and more book - to tell not just the story behind the remarkable collaborations that shaped this remarkable residential tower and its exceptional location; the materials chosen for the exterior and interiors and the corresponding elite craftsmanship, but the bigger story of Brisbane and everything that would be readily on your doorstep if you chose to become a resident.

Seeing is believing. How do you sell something exclusive and rare that doesn’t even exist? You have to make people believe it does. John Chrysostom said, “it is through the eyes that desire enters the soul”, but we were 12 weeks away from our first renders. We needed to make the project come alive in this interim period, so we could begin to gauge interest for the project in the relatively niche market of buyers with $6m plus to spend on a ‘downsizer’ or a ‘Brisbane weekender’.
