The last Sydney Mint Queen Victoria Halves!

The Sydney Mint And the Half Sovereign…

Following the discovery of gold in Australia in the 1850s, the resulting population explosion, boom in trade and demand for infrastructure saw a rapidly growing need for currency. As a consequence, there were increasingly vociferous calls for a local mint, and Britain ultimately established the first overseas branch of the Royal Mint in 1855 – the Sydney Mint.

Australia’s first official mint, the Sydney Mint was set up in the city’s old Rum Hospital, which had been built during Lachlan Macquarie’s governorship.

It was there that Australia’s first half sovereigns were struck, midway through 1855. Bearing distinctive designs, the first half sovereign types were issued from 1855 to 1866. Following a directive from authorities in London, the original motifs were replaced, with the Sydney Mint striking half sovereigns bearing the Shield (1871-93) and the St George design (1893-1916).

All branches of the Royal Mint – including that domiciled in Sydney – were somewhat reluctant to produce the half sovereign due to the difficulty in striking the coin compared to the larger sovereign. As a result, the mintages of Sydney Mint half sovereigns are very low. In addition, as the lowest gold denomination, the half sovereign was subject to a high rate of circulation, meaning that a huge number were withdrawn due to wear and then re-coined by Australian governments.

Extremely scarce and highly sought after worldwide, we are rarely able to assemble complete Sydney Mint Half Sovereign Collections – making this opportunity very important indeed.

First issued during the Coombs/Wilson signature combination from February 1966, the $1 note was destined to be Australia’s briefest decimal note denomination. Falling victim to inflation, and to the greater durability and economy of a $1 coin, the last $1 note was issued from 1982 to 1984 during the Johnston/ Stone signature combination.

In between the first and the last, the denomination was issued under an additional five different signature combinations – 1967 Coombs/Randall, 1969 Phillips/ Randall, 1972 Phillips/Wheeler, 1976 Knight/Wheeler, 1979 Knight/ Stone – with every one represented in this collection!
