Australia’s rare 1967 Goose $1 Silver Proof!

An iconic element of Australian numismatics, we are delighted to present the rare 1967 Goose Dollar in stunning Proof quality!

Seen by many as the ‘Crowning Glory’ of any serious decimal collection, the 1967 Goose $1 was designed by Andor Mészáros – the man who created designs that came so close to being chosen in 1963 for Australia’s decimal coinage. Based on the motifs of his entries for the new decimal 2c and 20c, Mészáros’ Goose $1 design won an Australian Coin Review (ACR) competition that was held in response to the rather controversial absence of a $1 coin denomination when Australia’s new decimal currency was unveiled.

Somewhat tongue-in-cheek, the Goose $1 design was officially submitted to the Commonwealth. Unsurprisingly, it was officially rejected. This led the ACR to have the Goose $1 privately minted by medallists John Pinches of London. Struck from 28.70g of sterling silver, and spanning an imposing 38mm in diameter, the mintage of the plain edge 1967 Goose $1 Proof was a mere 750. With many lost or mishandled, the Goose $1 is rare in the exquisite quality seen here.

Notable for the significant eye-appeal, being underpinned by rich, attractive toning, and sharp detail in Mészáros’ iconic designs, this extremely rare Australian Crown Pattern is sure to be snapped up instantly. Don’t miss this opportunity!

We are delighted to present the 1966 Wavy ‘2’ 20c –one of Australia’s rarest issued decimal coin types!

With a huge number of coins required for the decimal changeover in 1966, Australia sought the assistance of Britain’s Royal Mint. Thirty million of the 5c, 10c & 20c denominations were struck in London, and among the thirty million 20c coins would ultimately be found the 1966 Wavy ‘2’ 20c type. Probably caused by a simple and slight variation in the production of some of the dies, the 1966 Wavy ‘2’ 20c is distinguished by the obvious upward curve on the top of the baseline in the ‘2’.

With most 1966 Wavy ‘2’ 20c coins suffering extensive circulation, this key variety is undeniably scarce in about Uncirculated quality.

Complete Collection in Unc!

An irresistible opportunity, Downies can now offer you the chance to secure all TEN different types of the Australian 1966-84 $1 banknote series – with every note in glorious Uncirculated condition!

An historic presentation, the $1 banknote series plays a unique role in the history of Australian numismatics. First issued during the Coombs/Wilson signature combination from February 1966, the $1 note was destined to be Australia’s briefest decimal note denomination. Falling victim to inflation, and to the greater durability and economy of a $1 coin, the last $1 note was issued from 1982 to 1984 during the Johnston/Stone signature combination.

In between the first and the last, the denomination was issued under an additional five different signature combinations – 1967 Coombs/Randall, 1969 Phillips/ Randall, 1972 Phillips/Wheeler, 1976 Knight/Wheeler, 1979 Knight/Stone – with every one represented in this collection! Indeed, this comprehensive aggregation features BOTH the Phillips/Wheeler Commonwealth of Australia AND Australia banner types, and the three different Knight/Wheeler issues – including the highly sought after DBP Test note type!

An important element of Australian history, available at an unbeatable price, the Complete 1966-84 $1 Note Collection is now $135 off current market value! Presented in a Deluxe Lighthouse Album & Slipcase – valued at $85 but yours FREE! – we have a tiny number of sets available. Immediate action is essential!
