Hello and welcome to the October edition of the DGB Digital Magazine!

It appears that the usual pre-Christmas bounce hasn’t materialised in the same way it normally does. It did feel like the expected rush was getting underway at the start of September. But as details began to drop about what was to be expected in the coming budget, alongside the dour language from the Government about “tough decisions”, it felt as though that momentum stopped.

We will know soon enough the exact details of the budget and what impacts they are going to have on individuals and businesses.

In other news, it was a busier month on the M&A front with Glasscraft, Saint-Gobain and profine all doing deals. We also took a closer look at the share price performance of some of our biggest publicly traded companies. The news was better on that front!

As we head deeper into the final quarter we will begin looking towards the end of the year and reflecting on the year that has been. Where has that time gone?

We hope you enjoy this months edition of the DGB Digital Magazine!

The question of working arrangements and a four-day working week is back in the headlines as the new Labour government is said to be looking at updating existing legislation to allow more workers access to working one less day per week.

Naturally, this has sparked some debate within our own sector, and whether we think it can work in our industry or not.

A four-day working week

It’s important to note that the idea of flexible working and four-day weeks already exists in our sector. There are plenty of job roles in fenestration which allow people to work from home or remotely. Marketing, admin, and finance positions already have that flexibility. Some people in those roles will already work a shortened week.

Labour plans to strengthen existing legislation to force companies to offer four-day working weeks to all workers. This takes us from a place where the offer is flexible and voluntary to a point where it is mandatory. How quickly this legislation is brought before Parliament remains to be seen. There is a very difficult budget coming up next week which is likely to change the economic landscape of the country, and various international matters may distract the Government from other issues.

But for the sake of this post lets assume they will press ahead with it. How could a four-day working week which is more prevalent affect our industry?

Installers

I can speak with some real-world experience for this part of the supply chain. This is going to be dictated by the homeowners and installers willingness to work four days.

Removing a day per week from an installer’s schedule would naturally extend lead times. The idea of being able to work ten-hour days for four days in the world of installation isn’t that practical. Weather and lack of daylight in the autumn and winter months make that impossible. Therefore it would push lead times up. Something homeowners may not be keen to hear. Something which installation companies might not be that keen on either.

The reality is that most homeowners are going to want installers to be available at least five days per week to work. Their own plans, daily lives and project deadlines will mean for many, four days in a working week simply won’t work.

For the micro-installers, single person installers working out of their homes and vans, they will be the most likely to make a four-day week work for them. Smaller projects and more control over their own schedules will mean they could perhaps make a shorter week work for them. Larger businesses with bigger order books will likely stick with five-day weeks.

Fabricators and systems companies

Systems companies operate 365 days a year. The nature of their operations means they need their staff to be on a constant rotation. I remember when I toured the impressive Eurocell facility a couple of years ago I was illuminated by their flowing operations which run all year long. They explained they work every day of the year, even Christmas, and that required staff to be available.

The complicated nature of systems companies means a four-day week probably wouldn’t work here. At least on the factory floor. Admin and office staff could probably manage more flexibility but when it comes to the manual side of the job then there would be more practical hurdles to manage.

For fabricators though, I think this is one area where it could work. If fabricators could manage their input deliveries from IGU suppliers and systems companies, as well as organise their own deliveries to installers efficiently, then I could foresee a four-day week working out. It would of course depend on demand levels. Boom periods would probably make a shorter week harder to manage. But in quiet times like these, it could probably work without causing much upset to installers. So long as installers get their products on time, I don’t see why it would be a problem.

My own personal feeling is that if you’re officebased in this industry, you’ll be able to make a four-day week work. The nature of office roles allows you to work from home, or anywhere with an internet connection. You can make a shorter week work. But when it comes to the practical side, such as installing and fabricating, the demands to be available from customers means a shorter week likely isn’t going to work on a widespread basis. There are too many variables at play, and cramming another two hours into each of the four days probably isn’t going to be enough to make it work.

We will wait and see what the legislation looks like and how it will affect our own industry once it is announced by the government.

COULD A FOUR-DAY WORKING WEEK WORK IN FENESTRATION?

DERELICT WAREHOUSE TRANSFORMED EUROCELL LOGIK

Challenges Encountered in Redeveloping a Derelict Site

The redevelopment of a derelict warehouse, alongside the construction of three new apartment blocks in Leicester city centre, presented several significant challenges. Initially, brown aluminium was specified to align with the area’s aesthetic. However, the project’s primary goal was to transform the neglected site into modern, high-quality apartments that would contribute to the wider regeneration efforts in the city centre. In response, Nu Openings proposed the Eurocell PVC-U 70mm Logik Chamfered system in Black Ash and Syncro sliding doors as a more cost-effective and sustainable alternative to aluminium.

This specification change introduced the need for careful adherence to local planning protocols, collaboration with architects, and compliance with Building Regulations. Additionally, the derelict state of the warehouse added complexity to the project. On-site safety during the measurement of every window was paramount, and the team also had to contend with structural irregularities and environmental factors, such as the presence of pigeons.

Innovative Solutions for Modern Apartment Design

Nu Openings, contracted to install the windows and doors, worked closely with Padmore Construction and Eurocell’s Commercial team to overcome these challenges. The choice of the Logik 70mm system was driven by its exceptional thermal performance, achieving a U-value of 1.2, while offering significant cost savings compared to aluminium. Eurocell’s foiled Black Ash finish provided the ideal solution, balancing the need to match local architectural aesthetics with energy efficiency goals.

Steve Carvell from Nu Openings, who spearheaded the specification change, noted the challenge of ensuring that PVC-U could meet both the aesthetic and functional requirements of the project. Eurocell’s Technical team collaborated closely with architects, providing detailed technical drawings and support to secure planning approval, ensuring the project’s success.

Steve shared:

“Convincing the planners and architects to switch from aluminium to PVC-U wasn’t easy. It wasn’t a straight swap – we had to make sure the new material met all the aesthetic,

70MM SYSTEM

structural, and thermal requirements.

“Eurocell’s Technical team played a crucial role in this process, providing detailed drawings and performance data to demonstrate how Logik 70mm could deliver on energy efficiency, durability, and design. The team’s expertise helped us navigate complex planning approvals and ensured that the new specifications not only met but exceeded expectations, ultimately securing the confidence of all stakeholders involved.”

Despite the derelict state of the existing building, which required creating new structural openings for window installations and precise on-site measurements, the installation of over 220 frames has been successfully completed. The project involves more than 1,000 frames, with 90% of the installation carried out internally. This approach has minimised the need for external scaffolding, streamlining the process and reducing the impact on pedestrian safety around the site.

Delivering Cost Savings and Sustainability

Although the project is ongoing, the decision to shift from the originally specified aluminium to the Logik 70mm system has already yielded significant cost savings, while delivering highperformance, energy-efficient windows. The chosen design seamlessly integrates with the surrounding architecture, preserving the city’s identity while offering a modern,

sustainable solution.

Kelly Hibbert, Head of Commercial at Eurocell, highlighted the critical role of acoustic performance in the project, with bespoke glazing solutions designed to meet rigorous noise reduction standards:

“This project extended far beyond aesthetics – the windows needed to comply with strict acoustic requirements. The successful collaboration between planners, architects, and Nu Openings enabled us to meet every aspect of the design brief, transforming a derelict site into modern, energy-efficient apartments.”

“In addition to the performance benefits that the Logik 70mm system brought to this development, Eurocell’s sustainability credentials were also a key advantage. Our products, containing an average of 32% recycled PVC-U, contribute to the construction sector’s increasing focus on environmental responsibility and the complex journey towards achieving Net Zero.”

The redevelopment of the derelict warehouse, along with the construction of three new buildings as part of this project, aligns seamlessly with the broader initiative to enhance both the functionality and aesthetics of the city.

GLASS EXPRESS MIDLANDS OF CO2 IN ONE

Glass Express Midlands has been certified as a leading player in the circular economy of glass, with 203 tonnes of cullet returned to Saint-Gobain UK & Ireland’s Glass Forever scheme in just one year.

The equivalent weight of 16 London double-decker buses, the cullet has been returned to Saint-Gobain Glass’ manufacturing plant in Eggborough, to be recycled into new product. This has prevented 243 tonnes of virgin raw material from being used, in place of recycled glass.

“We’re fortunate to work with a material that is endlessly recyclable, and we are a business that actively places our environmental commitments at the forefront of our operations,” Glass Express Midlands’ Sales Director Fraser Caithness said. “So, when we heard about the Glass Forever scheme, we grasped the opportunity to take part with both hands.”

MIDLANDS SAVE 142 TONNES ONE YEAR

In order to return only clean cullet, Glass Express Midlands’ operators isolate all of their glass offcuts into specially designed, cut-proof cullet bags, provided by Saint-Gobain Glass. Once filled, they are then returned on the same SaintGobain Glass vehicles that deliver their glass, maximising resource and fuel.

Since 2021, Saint-Gobain Glass has remanufactured 860 kt of cullet and prevented the use of 1 million kt of raw materials from being used in their production process.

“Through the use of the clean glass cullet that we, and other processors, have supplied, Saint-Gobain can considerably reduce the amount of energy used in the production of float glass, resulting in a product with a lower carbon footprint”, Fraser explained.

“This creates a circular manufacturing economy and means that we can manufacture sealed units with a much lower carbon footprint – a sustainability credential that also benefits our customers.”

As well as its commitment to the Glass Forever scheme, Glass Express Midlands also reduces waste, energy use, and optimises systems throughout its manufacturing process, to create a highly sustainable operation. The latest optimisation software is employed to reduce the amount of wastage, and an ongoing programme of machine maintenance ensures that the factory runs optimally as well as resulting in extremely low rejection rates.

“All of our sustainability measures culminate to save our customers time, resources and money – making them more profitable in the process,” Fraser said. “It also puts us front and centre when bidding for high-profile contracts because we can prove that we are a sustainable manufacturer.”

THE IMPORTANCE OF INSURANCE BACKED GUARANTEES IN THE RENEWABLE ENERGY INDUSTRY

As the world shifts towards more sustainable energy sources, the renewable energy industry is rapidly expanding. Solar, air source and other green technologies are not just trendy; they’re essential for combating climate change and securing a sustainable future. However, with this growth comes a range of challenges for not only installing contractors but customers too. One tool that has emerged as crucial in this landscape is the Insurance Backed Guarantee (IBG). Let’s explore why these guarantees are so vital for the renewable energy sector.

Mitigating Financial Risk

Investing in renewable energy home improvements often involves substantial upfront costs, and the financial risks can be daunting for customers. IBGs provide a safety net for those customers, ensuring that they are protected in case of the unforeseen if the installing contractor ceases to trade. This risk mitigation is crucial for attracting commitment, especially from customers who may be hesitant to trust the process.

Enhancing Credibility and Trust

The renewable energy market is still maturing, and potential customers may have reservations about the viability of a contractor. An IBG acts as a vote of confidence, signalling that an installing contractor is protecting their own legacy as well as providing vital customer protection. This enhanced credibility can encourage further confidence from customers who might be uninformed or sceptical.

Some of those include Consumer Codes that require contractors to provide a minimum of 2 years of consumer protection to all customers. IBGs help ensure compliance with these regulations, making it easier for projects to secure necessary approvals. This is particularly important in markets where regulations are evolving quickly, as it provides an additional layer of security for both installing contractors and customers.

Compliance with Regulatory Requirements

There are some stringent regulations governing the renewable energy sector.

Conclusion

As the renewable energy industry continues to grow and evolve, the importance of consumer protection and financial security cannot be overstated. IBGs play a pivotal role in enabling confidence from customers, vital consumer cover and also protection of a contractor’s legacy and reputation. By mitigating risks and enhancing credibility, these guarantees are not just a safety net, they are a catalyst for growth in an industry that is upcoming.

EUROCELL SHARE PRICE SEES ROBUST GAINS

As of October 2024, Eurocell PLC, a leading UK manufacturer of UPVC products for the fenestration sector, has seen a significant rise in its share price, which now hovers around 169170p. This represents a year-to-date growth of approximately 47.6%, a remarkable performance that far exceeds the FTSE All-Share Index, which has delivered far more modest returns this year(FT Markets)(Stockopedia).

This surge in Eurocell’s stock price reflects the company’s resilience and adaptability in a year marked by both opportunities and headwinds in the broader fenestration and construction markets.

Eurocell’s Strong Performance in 2024

Eurocell’s share price has been on an upward trajectory throughout much of 2024, reaching its 52-week high of 182p in September before moderating slightly(FT Markets). This impressive rise can be attributed to a combination of factors, including strategic cost-cutting measures, operational improvements, and a focus on sustainability. The company has implemented initiatives to streamline its operations and increase the use of recycled materials in its products, which have not only lowered costs but also positioned it favourably in an increasingly environmentally conscious market( Yahoo Finance).

Analysts continue to express optimism about Eurocell’s long-term outlook, with many recommending the stock as a “buy.” The company’s dividend yield, currently around 3.26%, adds to its appeal for income-focused investors(FT Markets). Despite economic uncertainties and pressures on the new-build construction sector, Eurocell has been able to offset much of the negative impact through its presence in the repair, maintenance, and improvement (RMI) market, which has shown greater resilience(Stockopedia).

Fenestration Sector Faces Challenges in 2024

The broader fenestration sector, which encompasses windows, doors, and related construction products, has faced a mixed landscape in 2024. The industry has been grappling with a slowdown in new-build projects, primarily due to rising interest rates and broader economic uncertainty, which have tempered demand for new housing. These factors have negatively impacted companies that are heavily reliant on the newbuild segment(Stockopedia)(ShareProphets).

However, the RMI market has been a bright spot for the industry. Many homeowners, wary of economic conditions but still eager to enhance their properties, have turned to renovation and improvement projects instead of purchasing new homes. This shift has helped sustain demand for fenestration products, especially those aimed at energy efficiency and sustainability—two areas where Eurocell has made significant strides (ShareProphets). The company’s emphasis on recycled materials has resonated with environmentally conscious consumers and builders, positioning it well in the market.

Strategic Initiatives Driving Eurocell’s Success

One of the key drivers of Eurocell’s performance in 2024 has been its continued focus on expanding its recycling capabilities. The company now boasts one of the largest plastic recycling operations in the UK, which not only helps reduce costs but also aligns with the growing demand for sustainable building materials. Eurocell’s use of recycled UPVC in its window and door profiles has been a competitive advantage, as sustainability becomes a key consideration for both residential and commercial projects (FT Markets)(ShareProphets).

In addition to its environmental initiatives, Eurocell has also been proactive in managing costs in response to weaker demand from the new-build sector. In its half-year report released in September 2024, the company highlighted its efforts to control expenses

and improve operational efficiency, which have helped to mitigate the impact of the construction slowdown(ShareProphets). These cost-saving measures, combined with its robust RMI sales, have helped Eurocell maintain profitability and shareholder returns despite the challenging market conditions.

Outlook for the Remainder of 2024 and Beyond

Looking ahead, the outlook for Eurocell remains cautiously optimistic. While the new-build market may continue to face pressure due to economic factors such as inflation and interest rates, the company is well-positioned to capitalize on opportunities in the RMI market and the growing demand for sustainable building solutions( Yahoo Finance)(ShareProphets).

Furthermore, Eurocell’s ability to maintain a strong balance sheet, combined with its focus on recycling and cost management, suggests that it can continue to deliver solid financial performance even in a tough economic climate.

Analysts also point out that Eurocell’s valuation, with a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 15.25, is still attractive relative to its growth potential. The stock has consistently outperformed its peers in the homebuilding and construction supplies sector, making it a favoured pick among investors looking for exposure to the fenestration industry(FT Markets).

Eurocell’s share price performance in 2024 has been one of the standout stories in the fenestration sector. The company’s focus on sustainability, combined with effective cost management and a strong presence in the RMI market, has allowed it to outperform the broader market despite the challenges facing the construction industry. With a solid dividend yield and ongoing strategic initiatives, Eurocell appears well-positioned to continue delivering value to shareholders in the months ahead.

HOW OUR SECTOR’S BIGGEST PUBLICLY TRADED COMPANIES HAVE FARED

The fenestration sector, encompassing manufacturers of windows, doors, and glazing, has been navigating complex market dynamics in 2024. Pilkington (UK/Global)

Pilkington, a major global player in the glass manufacturing sector, has experienced a more volatile year. While its high-performance glazing solutions have been in demand, especially as green retrofitting and energy efficiency become more critical in the construction industry, the company’s stock performance has been constrained by external pressures. Global supply chain disruptions and rising energy prices, which are particularly impactful in glass manufacturing due to the energy-intensive nature of the process, have weighed on Pilkington’s share price FT Markets.

Despite these challenges, Pilkington has benefited from strong demand in niche markets, such as its self-cleaning and solar-control glazing products. However, analysts point out that the company’s dependence on large-scale commercial projects makes it vulnerable to economic fluctuations, and the uncertainty surrounding interest rates and inflation could further temper its growth prospects in the near term FT Markets Euronext Live.

Saint-Gobain (France/Global)

France-based Saint-Gobain, a multinational giant in the building materials and fenestration space, has had an impressive year. Its share price has risen by around 52% year-to-date, driven by strong demand for its broad range of products, including insulation, glazing, and building solutions. Saint-Gobain’s diversified portfolio and global footprint have helped it weather economic turbulence better than some of its more specialized peers Euronext Live FT Markets.

Saint-Gobain has also been a major beneficiary of the global shift towards sustainable construction. Governments across Europe, the U.S., and Asia are increasing subsidies and regulations to encourage the use of energy-efficient materials, positioning Saint-Gobain at the forefront of this transformation. The company’s ongoing investments in innovation, such as its advanced glazing technologies, have bolstered its market leadership. Analysts remain optimistic about Saint-Gobain’s future, citing its solid balance sheet and ability to capture long-term growth opportunities in the green building movement Euronext Live.

Sector Insights: The Fenestration Market in 2024

The share price performance of these four companies offers important insights into the state of the fenestration sector in 2024. One of the key trends has been the growing importance of sustainability. As governments and consumers increasingly prioritize energy efficiency, companies that provide innovative, eco-friendly solutions—like Eurocell, Deceuninck, and Saint-Gobain—have seen stronger demand for their products. The focus on green retrofitting and renovation has been particularly crucial, as many building owners opt to improve the energy efficiency of existing structures rather than invest in new builds, given rising borrowing costs.

However, the sector also faces several headwinds, particularly from macroeconomic challenges. Rising interest rates have dampened new-build construction activity, while inflation has driven up the costs of raw materials and energy, particularly affecting manufacturers like Pilkington, whose production processes are more energy-intensive. This has resulted in squeezed margins for some players, though others have managed to offset these pressures through cost-cutting measures and operational improvements.

Looking forward, the long-term prospects for the fenestration sector remain positive, particularly as global green building initiatives continue to gain momentum. Companies that can innovate and provide sustainable solutions are likely to remain market leaders, even in a more volatile economic environment. However, managing costs and navigating supply chain challenges will be critical for sustained profitability.

The share price performance of Eurocell, Deceuninck, Pilkington, and SaintGobain in 2024 reflects the broader dynamics of the fenestration sector. While sustainability has driven demand for energy-efficient products, economic headwinds such as rising interest rates and material costs have created challenges. Companies that can balance innovation with cost management are best positioned for success in this evolving market.

BUILDERS’ MERCHANT JULY SALES EDGE UP+0.9% YEAR-ON-YEAR

The latest Builders Merchant Building Index (BMBI) report, published in September, shows builders’ merchants’ value sales in July edged up +0.9% compared to the same month in 2023. There was a small increase in volume sales too (+0.6%) while prices remained flat (+0.3%). But with two more trading days this year, like-for-like value sales were down -7.9%.

July total value sales were +11.6% higher than June, with volume sales increasing by +11.7% and little movement in price (-0.1%). Eight of the twelve categories outperformed Total Merchants including Workwear & Safetywear (+19.8%), Plumbing Heating & Electrical (+15.5%), Ironmongery (+15.2%) and Renewables & Water Saving (+13.7%). Kitchens & Bathrooms (+8.0%) and Landscaping (+3.3%) grew more slowly. With three extra trading days in July, like-for-like value sales were down -3.0%.

In the 12 months of August 2023 to July 2024, total value sales were -5.8% lower than the same period the year before (August 2022 to July 2023). Volume sales were down -9.1% and prices up +3.7%. With four extra

trading days in the most recent 12-month period, like-for-like value sales were -7.3% lower. Categories which fared better than Total Merchants included Workwear & Safetywear (+11.1%), Miscellaneous (+5.3%) and Decorating (+5.1%). The two largest categories – Heavy Building Materials (-7.4%) and Timber & Joinery Products (-9.5%) –declined by more than Total Merchants.

Total value sales from January to July were -5.3% down on the first seven months of 2023.

Mike Rigby, Managing Director of MRA Research which produces the BMBI report says: “A vast improvement in July’s weather wasn’t enough to gee up the UK construction industry, as output fell -0.4% overall with five out of nine sectors decreasing in volume according to the latest ONS data. Private commercial new work (-2.4%) and private housing repair and maintenance (-1.7%) contracted the most, reflecting the caution felt by businesses and homeowners thanks to election uncertainty and the still fragile economy.

“A new government has an opportunity to

put some of those worries to bed. However, contradictory signals coming from the Prime Minister, Chancellor and Ministers have confused businesses and recent voters, by dashing expectations while still dangling pre-election promises of much better times to come.

“Promises to build 1.5 million new homes and sort out the planning system chokehold have lifted confidence in the construction industry and its supply chains. And a cut to interest rates in August was warmly welcomed by mortgage holders. But GfK’s Consumer Confidence Index’s -7-point fall in the overall index last month, and down is an early warning to the Government. All five measures in the Index are down, but the three forward-looking indicators are well down. Our personal financial situation for the next 12 months, down -9; our view on the general economy for the coming year, down -12; and the major purchase index, down -10 are bad news for the economy. Together with the withdrawal of winter fuel payments and the Chancellor’s grim warnings of a painful budget, consumers have taken the Government’s economic black hole alert to heart. Given that consumer confidence underpins consumer spending, which underpins economic growth, which the Government wants, the Prime Minister’s and Chancellor’s dire warnings could be a costly own goal”.

Set up and run by MRA Research, the BMBI – a brand of the Builders Merchants Federation – is a monthly index of builders’ merchant sales and the most reliable, up-to-date measure of Repair, Maintenance, and Improvement (RMI) activity in the UK. The index is based on actual sales from GfK’s Builders’ Merchant Point of Sale Tracking Data, which captures value sales out to builders from generalist builders’ merchants, accounting for 88% of total sales from builders’ merchants throughout Great Britain. An in-depth review, which includes commentary by sector experts, is provided each quarter.

July’s BMBI report is available to download at www.bmbi.co.uk.

TOUGH PAS24 UPDATE

PUBLISHED IN SEPTEMBER

The discovery last year of new door lock attack methods that could defeat most door locks shocked the industry, prompting the BSi to publish a tough new PAS24 update. Adding the tools to test for the new attacks to the PAS24 update mirrors the change made by Sold Secure to the Diamond (SS312) standard earlier this year. While achieving the standard is significantly tougher, it keeps our standards one step ahead of the burglars.

Nick Dutton, CEO of Brisant-Secure, explains: “The battle with burglars never stops. When lock makers became aware of these four aggressive attack methods last year, the bad news was that most locks would be defenceless against burglars using them. So, the BSi consulted extensively and has acted decisively. But adding these new tools makes the updated PAS24 the toughest test yet.

“Like the BSi, BrisantSecure is always looking to be one step ahead of new attack methods, which is why we’re the first to have a lock successfully tested and accredited with the new tools. The process of having sellable locks is long, and not one we’d want to start when the changes

were first announced. Once you’ve thought of the innovations behind the concept, there’s the lock redesign, and IP (Intellectual Property) checking. Then there’s the tooling production and testing to prove the new locks work before you can progress to production and shipping. Normally that would take two to three years. However because our patented ALPS technology was accredited in March, our customers can expect to see Ultion with ALPS technology rolled out very soon. Another Ultion first!”

PAS 24:2022+A1:2024 became the ‘current’ standard on 30 September.

£6M BIOFUEL TRIAL AT GLASS FUTURES AND PILKINGTON

A major industrial trial was successfully undertaken this month as part of a Glass Futures project to identify and demonstrate a variety of economically and technically suitable lowcost bioderived fuels for a range of industrial glass and ceramics sites with furnaces of varying designs and scales.

In previous Industrial Fuel Switching (IFS) round 1, phase 3 projects, Glass Futures demonstrated the feasibility of a number of biofuels such as for use in glass furnaces and identified fuels that emit circa 80% less Scope 1 CO2 than traditional natural gas. However, these fuels were found to be typically 2-3 times more expensive than natural gas and therefore, economically unattractive.

The first of five trials* kicked off with a successful industrial-scale trial at Pilkington UK Limited’s (part of NSG Group) Greengate site in St Helens as part of a project funded by the UK government under the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero’s (DESNZ) IFS 2, phase 2 programme, funded within its Net Zero Innovation Portfolio.

Not only will the project develop a detailed understanding of these fuels, their availability and potential CO2 savings but it will also assess their compatibility with Carbon Capture Utilisation & Storage (CCUS) technologies in a project led by C-Capture**, demonstrating the potential to remove CO2 from the flue gas emissions.

Glass furnaces and ceramics kilns are predominantly fired using natural gas due to ease of supply, and while the glass industry is already embarking on a range of new technologies to decarbonise glass melting, it is vital that these essential industries continue to find viable low-carbon alternatives to gas.

In March of this year, trials on Glass Futures combustion test bed facility provided valuable insights into the combustion properties of biofuel oil, alongside other biofuels, and the confidence to progress a selection of these fuels for trials on commercial glass furnaces and ceramics kilns.

Habib Khosroshahi, project team manager and programme lead for IFS said: “Having demonstrated the capability of these biofuels at our facility earlier this year, we are excited to progress this technology to industrial-scale trials, working alongside our members to truly test their suitability for commercial implementation, towards a lowercarbon future for the glass and foundation industries.”

The project brings together partners from two essential industries, glass and ceramics. Partners include major glass manufacturers such as Ardagh Glass Packaging, Encirc, NSG Group and O-I, as well as the UK’s largest manufacturer of shaped refractories DSF Refractories & Minerals Limited.

Caio Mendonça, R&D Senior Decarbonisation Technologist at Pilkington UK, said: “This groundbreaking trial is an exciting step towards net-zero and highlights our dedication to sustainable innovation within the glass industry. By testing biofuels at an industrial scale, we are pushing the boundaries of what is possible and demonstrating the power of cleaner, low-carbon alternatives to natural gas.

“This project is not just about reducing our own carbon footprint but also paving the way for the entire industry to transition towards more environmentally friendly practices. The insights we gain will help to accelerate the development of practical, cost-effective solutions that can be implemented across the sector.

“We look forward to continuing this journey alongside Glass Futures to pioneer a greener future for glass manufacturing.”

Steve Rotheram, Mayor of the Liverpool City Region said: “Glass Futures has a central role in our mission to decarbonise the Liverpool City Region. This initiative not only aims to transform the global glass industry, but it’s also creating new jobs and developing skills which are essential for the industries of the future.

“I’ve been really impressed by the collaboration that’s got us to this place, it’s a great example of how partnership working can really amplify the talent that exists in the Liverpool City Region and beyond.

“It’s exciting to see Glass Futures take the next step, trialling low-cost biofuels which could enable the production of zero-emission gas more cheaply while contributing to the UK’s net-zero mission.”

EXTENDING SUMMER INTO AUTUMN AND WINTER

Off the back of a below-par summer and with winter fast approaching, many homeowners are looking to extend their homes’ access to the outdoors. But as Brits, how do we get that feeling of being connected to the outside, without leaving the warmth and comfort of our homes in the cooler months?

Whether it’s a living area in need of more light, or a conservatory that requires easy access to the outdoor space beyond, a floorguided sliding door system can brighten up any room, offering effortless access and uninterrupted views, according to Bohle Area Manager, Lance Conway.

“With FloorTrack from Bohle, you can create a transparent partition wall that elegantly separates living spaces and outdoor areas”, Lance explains.

“You can choose between two floor tracks: one version is recessed into the floor, whilst the other features an attached running track that be mounted as well. We’ve also added the ability to incorporate ramp profiles to create barrier-free transitions. This gives installers the flexibility to create both stunning and functional architectural designs for their customers.”

In line with the demand for ‘bigger and better’ glazing, FloorTrack can incorporate between three and five sliding elements with a maximum width of 1.1m each, or alternatively, total widths of over 10m can be achieved thanks to connecting elements available from Bohle.

“I read a study that said that limited natural light at home generally rates their physical and mental well-being lower than those with ample natural light in their properties”, Lance says.

“Our mental wellbeing is so intrinsically linked with our access to the outdoors and to natural light, and there’s no better way of achieving this than through uninterrupted floor-to-ceiling glazing.

“There are no distracting sightlines or clunky hardware – with FloorTrack it is literally a clear gateway to the world outside of our homes.”

Easy breezy

FloorTrack is available in three finishes – white, anthracite grey and anodised aluminium –offering the opportunity for installers to suite the hardware to the customer’s existing window and door colour scheme.

Installation is a breeze thanks to easy access to the height adjustment of the partition wall on the side of the system, which can be conveniently adjusted when installed and guarantees perfect alignment of the glass panes.

“When you’re dealing with a sliding door that has upwards of three large, heavy panes, the last thing you want to be doing is tying yourself up on site for hours on end trying to get the panes to sit straight”, Lance explains.

“We’ve made the installation of FloorTrack quick and easy, reducing the installer’s time on site without compromising on the longevity and quality of the product.”

The end caps of the glass profiles have a built-in catch function – together with the mechanical rubber buffers, the partition can be closed gently, with a latch ensuring secure locking. It can be opened again quickly using the foot, offering quick and easy access to the garden for the homeowner, whilst simultaneously protecting them from any unwanted guests.

The fittings are all also anodised and offer the corrosion protection that is necessary for

outdoor use, ensuring that installers won’t face any maintenance headaches in the long run.

Enhancing spaces

“We’ve seen the popularity of FloorTrack really increase in the post-Covid era”, Lance says. “People are more connected to the outdoors and want that feeling of being in touching distance of their gardens and nature.

“And that shouldn’t be limited to summer when we can physically sit outside.

“With FloorTrack, installers can bring the feeling of summer to the homeowner all year round, creating a high-margin, high-impact architectural design feature that enhances their property.”

KOMBIMATEC OPEN DAYS SHOWCASE CUTTING-EDGE CNC MACHINERY FOR ALUMINIUM AND PVC FABRICATION

Kombimatec, Leighton Buzzard, a leading UK manufacturer of machinery for the window, door, and curtain walling industries, is pleased to announce the success of its recent open days event 17th-19th September, which attracted a wide range of industry professionals eager to see the latest innovations in aluminium and PVC profile fabrication.

The open days featured live demonstrations of Kombimatec’s advanced machinery, giving visitors the opportunity to experience first-hand how these systems are transforming the manufacturing process. The event was designed to cater to both aluminium and PVC fabricators, with tailored demonstrations for each material type.

For aluminium-focused attendees, the spotlight was on the DGS530 Electronic Double Mitre Saw. Visitors saw how aluminium profiles were cut with precision, while a self-adhesive label, containing a barcode for profile identification, was automatically printed during the cutting cycle. This barcode is essential for tracking the profile throughout the production process and feeding data into subsequent machines. The seamless workflow continued with the AMC328 Machining Centre, where a Datalogic scanner was used to scan the barcode. This immediately identified the part, activating a 3D simulator that allowed operators to verify the routing details for the specific piece. Once confirmed, the operator loaded the profile into the AMC328, and the machining cycle ran smoothly.

For PVC-focused visitors, Kombimatec demonstrated the fabrication of the innovative Mech/Part Weld Joint. Profiles were first cut with mitre and straight-end preparations before being fed into a CNC routing machine. These profiles were then welded using the 2HD/MW Welder, resulting in high-quality joints that simulate the appearance of traditional wooden windows, while leveraging the cost-efficiency and durability of PVC. This new welding technique impressed attendees, highlighting how fabricators can achieve a premium aesthetic with minimal effort, making it an attractive option for manufacturers looking to offer high-end solutions at a competitive price point.

“We were delighted with the success of our open days,” said David Parsons, Director at Kombimatec. “The live demonstrations of both the aluminium and PVC processes allowed our visitors to see how our machinery integrates cutting, tracking, and machining into an efficient production flow.

The response was overwhelmingly positive, with many attendees impressed by the precision and versatility of our systems.”

Throughout the event, Kombimatec’s expert team was on hand to answer questions, provide insights into the latest industry trends, and discuss how manufacturers can implement these technologies into their production lines to improve efficiency and product quality.

The open days not only showcased Kombimatec’s dedication to innovation but also served as a valuable platform for networking and knowledge exchange among industry professionals.

With the success of this event, Kombimatec plans to host similar open days in the future, offering more opportunities for manufacturers to see first-hand how the company’s CNC machinery can meet their production needs.
