JJ’s Epic Eats - the Best Grub Guide in Town
Local restaurant claims they have the best omelettes in town – JJ puts it to the test

As it was the school holidays, we had the chance to go out for lunch instead of dinner and try the Portuguese restaurant, Dijo, located just outside the main town centre area of Horley, a 6 minute walk from the Station.

From the outside it looks like a non-assuming café but don’t let looks fool you! Inside it was actually really nice, with close-together tables, lush green plants, and even a whole wall of fake leaves that looked super green and cool.

The menu is varied with lots of fresh ingredients and a good selection of lunch as well as dinner items to suit all tastes, which made it hard to decide what to try. Do I go traditional or do I go for one of my usuals ? – decision made, a bit of both, I went for the DIJO burger and fries while my mum tested the omelette.

My burger was tasty, it was HUGE I could barely fit it in my mouth, it was cooked a little too much for me but with the meaty bacon, cheese, onion and fried egg, it had a great flavour. The fries were crispy and fresh but honestly, fries are fries, they weren’t bad, but nothing out of this world either.

My mum’s chorizo, cheese and onion omelette came in a Portuguese roll (there is an option to have chips and salad instead). She said it was definitely the ‘best in town’, soft, cooked perfectly and with lots of flavour, and when I tried a bite, it was packed with fillings and super delicious.

They also have a dessert corner full of tasty treats, including the famous Portuguese egg custard tarts (pastel de nata). Plus, there was a specials board, with tapas and mainly Portuguese dishes but also some surprises like barbeque ribs.

And for those people who don’t want to sit in a restaurant for hours (yes, I’m looking at you…), they had takeaway coffees and a ready-to-make-up choice of fillings for sandwiches. Oh, and if you fancy eating outside, there’s also an outside European style pavement seating area and a rooftop terrace!

For drinks, I had a “Berry Go Round” smoothie, which had blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries

in it. It was so good that I drank the whole thing in what felt like 10 seconds. The desserts all looked tempting too, especially the pastel de nata, but I was way too full after my giant burger. Instead, I took a fresh jam doughnut home with me, which I saved for later - perfect decision.

Next to the dessert counter, tucked a bit towards the back there is a small shop area selling traditional Portuguese and Spanish foods including seafood and sauces

The service was quick and efficient. It took exactly 9 minutes and 57 seconds for our food to arrive after we ordered, which is pretty speedy, although the restaurant wasn’t that busy. The server was polite and nice, but not super chatty compared to other places I’ve been.

Overall, I’d rate this restaurant an 8.77 out of 10. It’s a very traditional Portuguese spot with quick service, good food, a clean, modern interior, a cool dessert selection, an item shop, and even a rooftop terrace. And about their big claim? From what I tasted, their omelettes really might just be the best in town!

Take a walk to DIJO from Horley station and pick up some fresh treats, stop off on your way along the Balcombe Road for a coffee and a made-to-order sandwich, or make it a destination for lunch or dinner with friends.

Highly recommended!

She was no Lemon

The Archway Theatre, located in The Drive, Horley, Surrey, presents Nell Gwynn, written by Jessica Swale and directed by Michael Thonger.

About the Production

Nell Gwynn is set in the swinging 1660s and begins in the playhouse, in Drury Lane, London. As director Michael Thonger explains, “The play is all about the theatre. It is critical to the story and much of the play’s impact relies on a clear sense of what it would have been like.

“For the set of this production we thought it would be fitting to take audiences straight back to the Restoration with a replica of an indoor stage of that time. It includes period details such as footlights and sconces for the stage-within-the-stage, boxes on the upper levels for important characters and a large symmetrical layout drawn from pre-Palladian classicism.”

“With the restoration of the Monarchy in 1660 came a flowering of fashion trends so long suppressed by the puritan Government of Oliver Cromwell,” comments Felicity Westmacott, who created the costumes for this show. “Flirtatious women shed their wide plain collars and now wore low cut bodices with necklines exposing decolletage and most of their shoulders. Flamboyant men adopted long curling wigs and groomed fancy facial hair. The sober doublet of previous years became a short waistcoat above puffed breeches and a full skirted coat with many buttons was a steep change in men’s fashion, the long time forerunner of what became the frock coat and much later our modern suit jacket.”

However, adds Felicity, the lower classes could not afford the new clothes and fabrics of their masters. “But they emulated all that they could within their means. Actors and of course the new lady-actresses led working people with fantastical fashions on the stage.”

This play contains themes of a sexual nature.

About the Director

Michael has been performing at the Archway since 2021. Over the past couple of years you may have seen him in What You Will, Wild and Much Ado About Nothing. He has a predilection for historical theatre, particularly works from the 16th, 17th and 19th centuries.

This is Michael’s first time directing for the Archway, although he has directed for various groups throughout Surrey. His last production as director was 2023’s The Tempest with Pitchy Breath Theatre Company.

Live Like Lords & Ladies with a Wonderful Stay at Langshott Manor

By far my fave hotel in Horley and the surrounding area is the delightful Langshott Manor, as wonderfully showcased in Julie’s fantastic cover photo for this month’s issue of the Horley Town Crier.

My husband and I spent our wedding night here in 2010, with the whole family joining us the following day for a delectable afternoon tea, and we have enjoyed celebrating our anniversary at this award-winning historic hotel pretty much every year since, always staying in the magical master suite - Anne Boleyn.

What’s more, our cousin was SO impressed with Langshott Manor, she held her own wedding there, too!

With fabulous food and the all-new curated 'Lovely Langshott' overnight experience on our doorstep, discover 'Tudor with a twist' as you live like Lords & Ladies for the day, night or longer . . .

We were unable to make last year due to my husband’s diagnosis of acute leukaemia (AML) – hence I set up the above-mentioned Triple C (Cancer Care Community at www.thetriplec.co.uk) - but all is well now, thankfully, so we will be back at this romantic escape again this autumn for sure!

Fab Family Days Out at Godstone Farm

Finally, for top family-friendly days out with the kids, among our preferred places to go is Surrey's own Godstone Farm, which I have nominated for 'Best Family Fun' at the Surrey Awards in the past.

Maintaining its proud heritage and family business feel, this fab farm set in the stunning Surrey Hills is home to over 500 animals and is accommodating to all, also running exclusive SEND sessions in the Play Barn - Surrey’s biggest soft play centre - for those with special sensitivities and needs.

Discover, explore and play at this fantastic farm park, offering animal interactions, a dinosaur trail, sand pits, plus a massive adventure playground.

Following our visit, I sent a ‘herogram’ to Caroline and Andrea in the team, who went out of their way to welcome us and kindly gave my son Harry and his friend Viola special hands-on ‘VIP' treatment, allowing them to assist with placing animals, reptiles and birds back in their pens after petting time. This was such a special treat for Harry, who absolutely LOVES animals and is keen to be a vet when he grows up.

For affordable, free-range family fun come rain or shine, visit this local gem for a top family farm adventure, with exciting forthcoming events in store this autumn, such as the brand-new monster-sized Halloween Adventure and Fireworks Festival – a dazzling display with a festival feel.

Photo: Godstone Farm Fireworks

Taking place for the first time this October, the farm will be filled with thrilling entertainment, offering an exhilarating toboggan run (‘til dusk), sparkling ‘low-noise’ fireworks, lasers, captivating fire acts, towering stilt walkers, glowing LED butterfly actors and jugglers, a kids’ mini disco, plus a chance to experience the huge outdoor playground after hours. www.godstonefarm.co.uk

Dan was raised in Redhill, Surrey. He founded DJS Moves in 2019 after serving with The Princess of Wales’ Royal Regiment for 15 years.

His parents live in Redhill, and his sister and nieces live in Horley. Dan’s wife, Jade, was raised in Horley and attended Oakwood School, then Reigate College before relocating to the coast. Her parents still live in the same ‘Horley’ house she grew up in.

DJS Moves have just added another van to our fleet, now five vans of various sizes are working all over the UK and Internationally – including regular trips to Ireland. We are always looking for new drivers, so if you think you could offer our customers exceptional service, we would love to hear from you.

We are excited and pleased to make time to support more residents, business and the local council where we grew up and have asked Jade’s sister Kate, to come on board with the family business.

You may already know Kate (who also attended Oakwood school) from being the co-founder and trustee of the not-for-profit community groupInfinity Space to Grow. She can be found every Friday running their support group called ‘Bloom’ which is upstairs in the Regents Hall at Horley Community Centre.

Kate has been a qualified teacher for 25 years and has taught in many local schools. She has been tutoring lots of children who live in Horley for the past 5 years.

DJS Moves has also just been accepted as one of the new sponsors for ‘Horley United FC’. We are excited to be sponsoring a newly formed local club with the community that supported our family.

When growing up in Horley our cousins and siblings have learnt musical instruments, played

sports and joined in with social activities with many of the community that now run local clubs and events.

V French Recipe of the Month

This month I thought I mayonnaise, something one cannot do without in France. This is how my mum used to make it and how I make it too. I will put it in English and French just for fun.

Ingredients/Ingrédients

1 egg yolk/1 jaune d œuf

A pinch of salt/une pincée de sel

Some pepper/un peu de poivre

A spoonful of Dijon mustard/une cuillerée de moutarde de Dijon

A few drops of lemon juice/quelques gouttes de citron

Vegetable or sunflower oil/huile végétale ou de tournesol, about 300ml/environ 300ml

Separate the yolk and the white, keep the white aside for later to use in another recipe if you wish/Séparez le jaune du blanc d’œuf, gardez le blanc d’œuf pour l’utiliser plus tard si vous le désirez.

Put the yolk in a bowl and add a pinch of salt, some pepper and a few drops of lemon juice and mix with a fork/Mettez le jaune dans un bowl, ajoutez une pincée de sel et du poivre ainsi que quelques gouttes de jus de citron, mélangez à l’aide d’une fourchette.

Add the mustard and mix/Ajoutez la moutarde et mélangez.

Add a small amount of oil while mixing continuously/ ajoutez un filet d’huile en mélangeant continuellement. You should have a thick mixture/le mélange devrait être épais.

Keep adding oil, a bit at time, mixing continuously/ Continuez d’ajouter l’huile, petit à petit, en mélangeant continuellement.

Taste it, add more salt, pepper or lemon juice to taste/ Goûtez, ajoutez un peu plus de sel, de poivre ou de jus de citron selon votre goût.

Et Voilà !

Goes well with chips, tuna, hard-boiled eggs, etc/ Accompagne bien les frites, le thon, les œufs cuits dur, etc.

Enjoy ! Bon appétit !

ABit of a Fixer Upper?

Revealed: the historical roots of fact checking

This article has been thoroughly fact checked and had all verifiable facts removed by

Amid the current furore over "fact checking" by Facebook, the media and other bastions of righteousness that have never been known to tell fibs, it has been forgotten that Fact Checking is far from new.

Recently unearthed documents, discovered by researchers in an old hat box that had been gathering dust in the basement of the Tower of London, reveal that fact checking dates from the Middle Ages when it was used extensively to relieve the minds of the hoi poloi and riffraff of the burden of heresy.

As you know, heresy is synonymous with lying, whilst gainsaying the assertions of the Very Best People is as bad as terrorism and this, evidently, has always been the case.

We cite here the translation from the Latin of two ancient parchments now safely installed in the British Museum's, "Thought Control Through the Ages" section. Both were originally issued by "Ye Office of ye Grand Inquisitor, Department of ye Wytch Burnings and ye Facte Checkinge" in 1492 and 1528 respectively.

The First Document says:

Hear ye O men of faith, ye statement by ye heretic Simon Galileo of ye Borough of Scunthorpe that ye Earth goeth around ye sun be FALSE.

It hath been thoroughlie FACTE CHECKED by ye completely sensible facte checkers of ye Order of ye Brothers of Veritie, which be renowned for its impartialitie in matters of ye Truth.

Ye Order of ye Brothers of Veritie hath been established last Michaelmas Eve for ye purpose of defending ye righteous from ye onslaught of ye unapproved factes. Its Holy Fact Checkers are completelie worthy of thy trust for they have credentials most impeccable, although these and their identities must be withheld for reasons of securitie.

They have consulted ye experts of ye Inquisition which be ye most thorough repositrie of veritie known to Man, and have thereby proven conclusivelie that ye Sun goeth around ye Earth but avoideth Englande.

For his crime most heinous Mr Galileo hath been ordered to be suspended for a term of six months until he cometh to his senses. If he feeleth this penaltie be too harsh, Mr Galileo may lodge an appeal to have it commuted to suspension by ye thumbs instead of ye genitals.

And the Second:

Behold, the Almanac of Ethelbert Nutter, part-time blasphemer of Chipping Sodbury doth contain ye FAKE NEWS.

His spurious and mischievous claim that ye Earth be probablie "at least a half a million years olde" be FALSE.

Ye Facte Checkers of ye Most Holy Inquisition have examined these claims most thoroughlie and without bias or agenda of any kind and found that they be without foundation or truth.

Ye science be settled on ye matter and for his false claims ye aforementioned Nutter be roundly condemned and equalie roundly set on fire.

Promote Yourself in the Town Crier

If you belong to or are active in the communities embraced by this magazine, you can promote yourself, your community activity, charity, club society, special interest, hobby, cause célèbre or small local business in it.

Free promotion

If you are a charity or not-for-profit club, society, association or group, you can promote free of charge. In exchange, if you can contribute a small donation this will be appreciated. Donations are not obligatory but in the interests of fairness, those who have helped with donations will, where need arises, be given priority in proportion to their generosity.

As we want to avoid the Town Crier becoming just another advertiser in which articles play second-fiddle to advertisements, we ask that where possible you submit an article about your charity, activity, event and so forth that will provide an interesting and engaging read. Such articles can be any length up to about 600 words and should be accompanied where possible with some pictures that will help grab attention plus any contact/ website/social media details you would like people to have.

Having said that, we will also do our best to place your announcements, event promo and so forth so please do send them in.

Best formats for images are JPEG and PNG.

Free Promotion for Local Businesses

If you are a local for-profit operation we will provide one free advertorial-style article per business. As described above we are looking for something that will engage, inform, inspire or interest our readers. Length can be up to 600 words, which would give you a full page of free advertising. Please also provide some pictures and full contact/website/social media details. Alongside the opportunity for a free advertorial we also provide very affordable advertising space (see below).

Become a Columnist

Another way to promote your enterprise (whether for-profit or not-for-profit) is to become a columnist for the magazine providing a monthly article that gives people advice and tips from your area of expertise - a great way to promote your competence and good will. In exchange for providing interesting material for our readers and perhaps a small donation you get monthly free advertising. To apply to have a column please email the editor at egtowncrier@gmail.com and we’ll give your proposal fair consideration.

Paid Advertising in the Town Crier

In order to avoid becoming just another advertiser over-filled with ads, we are making only a limited amount of space available for advertising. This amounts to the equivalent of one page of advertising for every four pages of articles. It is to the benefit of advertisers in any case to have a magazine full of content people will want to read without a barrage of advertisements competing for their attention.

Advertising costs are being kept low and amount to the equivalent of roughly £10 or less per week for a quarter page ad. Our full pricing structure can be found here

To give further value for your paid advert, while you have a paid ad running in the magazine we will not run a paid ad for a competitor selling the same product or service. Where your ad clashes with a free advertorial by a competitor the advertorial will be placed in a different part of the magazine and every effort made to have your paid ad appear earlier in the magazine. Our policies regarding paid advertising are further explained here

We have also made advertising space available on the Town Crier website. See the details here

The door is also open for you to submit humorous/ satirical articles, poetry and verse, “how-to” tips and advice, interesting/entertaining news and titbits, recipes etc and if we publish your submission you can include a link to the website of your choice.

Free first trial session still on at either of our venues until the end of September!* Just come along and try us out!

Mondays: Salfords - 1930 at Perrywood Sports & Social Club

Tuesdays: Horley - 1315 at Horley Baptist Church* ...details on our accompanying leaflet

[*NB The dance session on Tuesday 23 September at Horley Baptist Church has been moved to Monday 22 September; the start time remains the same at 1.15pm; this is a temporary measure - we will be back to normal the following week as shown above and on our leaflet]

In the meantime, here is an interesting clip from Michael Mosley’s BBC Radio 4 series, ‘Just One Thing’, in which he talks about various research into the benefits of dance; this included a 12-year study

of 50,000 adults which showed dancing was linked to a reduced risk of stroke or heart attack as well as 40 studies which showed the impact that dance movement therapy had on mental health: (Ref: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/ articles/1Hpr6R1f4M7f8Qc6fPGH2hg/why-dancing -is-the-best-way-to-enhance-your-brain-and-fitness)

For Dr Mosley’s full BBC podcast on the benefits of dance, please click on the following link: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m0017cfl

It is clear there are wide-ranging benefits of regular dancing on physical and mental health, particularly in older adults, but the most important thing is..... fun!

Any queries, please email letsdancemelange@outlook.com ...or just turn up!
