The Archway Theatre, located in Horley, Surrey, presents The Unfriend - written by Steven Moffat (award-winning writer of Dr Who and Sherlock) and directed by Michael Beach.
Performances are at 7:45pm in The Archway Theatre’s main auditorium, on 20-23 and 26-30 August. In addition, there is a matinee performance at 2pm on 23 August.
While on a cruise, Peter and Debbie meet Elsa, a lusty, non-woke, American widow and do the usual thing of agreeing to stay in touch after the holiday. So, when Elsa invites herself to stay at their home in the London, they decide to look her up online. Too late! They discover that deadly danger is on its way and have to find a way of tactfully protecting those they love. This is a hilarious and satirical look at middle-class England’s compulsion to appear nice.
The play is set in two locations. One is a cruise ship; and the other is Peter and Debbie’s home, with a hall, toilet and kitchen - all of which play a part in the story!
As director Michael Beach notes, “This was some challenge, and one that has been met and answered by Eddie Redfern’s brilliant set design. A forestage cruise ship deck - with port holes - followed swiftly by the change to the house with back door, front door, living room, kitchen and downstairs toilet. Eddie’s inspired design managed to include so many crucial elements - and it was realised brilliantly by our wonderful Scenery Citizens team.”
Michael Beach has been a member of The Archway for 20 years and this is the 13th play that he has directed, including Private Lives, The Lady in the Van, Handbagged and My Boy Jack. He has also acted in various plays, including Privates on Parade, The History Boys, Mother Goose and Oliver!.
His first play was Natural Causes, playing opposite Viv Short, directed by Trish Moram. He is delighted that they are all reunited for this production.
He has been a member of Council, stage-managed
and does the bar.
The Archway Theatre is among Surrey's leading repertory drama theatres. Nestled in Horley’s atmospheric railway arches, The Archway Theatre Company has for over 70 years been surprising and delighting local residents and visitors with high quality productions, ranging from Shakespeare and the classics, through modern comedies, musicals and pantomimes, to experimental pieces that push the boundaries of the form.
A member of the prestigious Little Theatre Guild, the Archway boasts a comfortable 95-seat auditorium and a cosy, recently refurbished bar, where audience members and cast and crew can relax and enjoy the anticipation and afterglow of memorable performances.
There are ten main house productions per year, running for ten nights each. In addition, there is a studio space for smaller-scale shows and the Archway's Youth Workshop and Young Adults groups offer fantastic opportunities for the young people of the area to experience the thrill of putting on live theatre.
More information about this production, as well as tickets (subject to availability) for each of the performance dates, can be obtained via The Archway’s website: www.archwaytheatre.co.uk

This month: JJ’s epic eats visits a local café
Sheila’s Café is located just outside Horley town centre, on Lee street, It is family-owned and run, which already makes it feel friendlier than those big chain cafés.
When mum and I went Sheila and her daughter Amelie were working and both of them are super friendly, they find time to chat with you as well as keeping the food and milkshake orders flowing.
A couple of colourful bistro tables and chairs are outside to soak up the British summer and there is an offer of eat in or takeaway food and drinks.
Tables with benches and chairs, quirky walls and a large customer WC make this café a nice place to sit and catch up with friends or family or a place to work for an hour or so away from your home office if you have one.
Parking? Well, there’s parking right outside, plus a big front window so you can see straight inside. There are only six parking spaces, so if you rock up at a busy time… good luck.
There is a large range of hot and cold drinks and a good variety of lunch options, including jacket potatoes, salads, paninis, baguettes and traditional sandwiches, all with a list of fillings that can be chosen to your taste as well as extras like onion chutney and sauces. As well as the savoury options, there is a big choice of cakes and biscuits, but it is Sheila’s Milkshakes that are Legendary I dare you to try one and not come back for another
I ordered a deluxe Oreo milkshake and I’m telling you, it’s one of the nicest I’ve ever had: cold, creamy, chocolatey, and basically a dessert in a glass.
For food, I went for a bacon and sausage baguette. You get a decent-sized pot of sauce of your choice on the side so you can put on exactly how much you want (genius).
My mum had a bacon, brie, and onion chutney panini, which had loads of filling and chutney.
The food came in 9 minutes and 24 seconds (yes, I
timed it because I was hungry), and it was seriously tasty. Obviously, it’s not Michelin-star fancy, but it’s way better than you generally expect from a small independent café.
But parents: A Warning!Apart from the epic milkshakes, if you bring your kids here, their minds might actually explode because there’s a whole candy corner. We’re talking pick-and-mix sweets, giant jars, and even pre-prepared bags. I nearly forgot to order food because I was too busy staring at the choice of gummy bears.
Overall, the staff are super nice, there is a good variety of food and drink (they also offer platters and you can book the Café for a private party or function) and Sheila is passionate about supporting local events and people.
The café is small but very pleasant, with free parking outside and with a Google review score of 4.9 stars. Anyone with a giant sweet tooth (ME!!!) would be mad not to pop in to tickle their tastebuds.
Basically, Sheila’s Café is chill, tasty, and a bit dangerous if you like sugar as much as I do!
Check Sheila’s café out at 17 Lee Street, Horley.

The Men’s Shed have been very busy, raising £162 at the Horley Carnival whilst demonstrating making Gypsy Flowers, entering a team at the Horley Lions Skittles Tournament, exhibiting a “Memory Chair” of home made wooden flowers at the Methodist Flower Festival whilst celebrating our second vbirthday with a BBQ with our landlords, the Horley Health Hub and a social trip to the Black Horse.
Currently we have a commissions to make some large owl boxes for Langshot Conservation Group and a private buyer.
We are busy replenishing our stock of bird boxes and feeders, bug towers, hedgehog houses, boot and coat hangers, dog beds, bat boxes, garden planters and much more for our stall at the Horley Dog Show on Sunday September 7th. Come along for a chat and buy a very reasonably priced upcycled and handcrafted product.
We can also make planters to order. After the Dog Show we will turn our attention to Christmas, making things to sell at the Leisure Centre Fair on November 22nd and a tree for the Methodist Christmas Tree Festival in early December.
We are open every Tuesday behind the Horley Health Hub, 120 Victoria Road from 9:00am until 15:00pm with two sheds which contain a range of equipment, a large outside area and access to a rest area where we stop for regular breaks and lunch with guys coming and going as they like.
The “Shedders” can be from 18 to 108 years old with a huge range of backgrounds and skill levels, from none to experts but we are a men only group.
We are self funding through subs (£1 a week if you can afford it) or by selling things we have made. If you are interested just pop-in one Tuesday and meet us.

You may be visiting France this year, and if you take the Channel Tunnel, then you will start your journey in the North of France, near Calais, or in Calais itself if you take the Ferry, which I shall be doing soon myself.
But what is there to see in that region? Granted, it is the coldest part of France, and the flattest.
Starting with Calais itself, one can go up the Beffroi, i.e. Belfry that is part of the council offices in the town centre. From there, you have a great view of the area. When I visited, there weren’t too many people so it was quite pleasant.
If you like walking, then a stroll on top of the cliffs is great, you can visit various fortified places, but beware, the wind can be quite strong!
The beaches along the North are very sandy, I used to love going there as a child, and of course you can go into the dunes and still sneak into the many bunkers left from the Second World War. They are now bomb-free, although I do remember in the 70s hearing an announcement from the lifeguards for everybody to come out of the water as an unexploded mine needed to be brought to shore safely. As soon as the lifeguard told us it was safe, we were all back in the water!
In Boulogne, a few miles down the road, head for Nausicaa, the sea life centre; it’s big and makes for a great family day out. Or visit its chateau and museum.
Go further inland and visit Arras, with its beautiful Dutch-style buildings around cobbled squares. It has a great market on Saturdays.
You can visit the many tunnels underneath the squares and the town hall, all of which were dug and given street names by British Empire troops, mostly New-Zealanders ahead of one of the great battles to be fought. The Germans never figured out where those pesky Brits were!
It’s a great bit of history, and a guide will take you back down memory lane. I really enjoyed it when I visited many years ago. When you come out, you can take a horse-drawn cart and go around the old town. You should then stop at one of the chocolatiers that specialise in “Arras tiles”, lovely chocolates that you will find nowhere else.
And what should you eat when in the North?
One of the best things, is moules marinières. It’s our version of fish and chips really. But try also a carbonnade, which is a beef stew cooked in beer rather than wine, as for boeuf bourguignon.
The North being beer country, you will find a plethora of beers, a lot produced by small breweries.
Try Bêtises de Cambrai, a minted sweet, or munch through speculoos, those lovely spiced biscuits, or a pain d’épices, i.e. a spicy bread - something I cannot do without!
And of course, treat yourself to some nice patisseries. When in France, do like the French, enjoy plenty of food! I surely do!

Experts have discovered that efforts to save the environment from the weather and other threats have not gone far enough in so far as the air still has carbon dioxide in it and people have been inexplicably reluctant to adopt the highly recommended Stone Age lifestyle that rejects the evils of civilization in favour of lives that are less harmful to the planet by virtue of being much shorter.

Genius methods of reducing carbon dioxide emissions such as making bovine flatulence illegal, making it mandatory for every citizen to hold their breath several times a day and scrapping frivolous luxuries such as the economy have shocked scientists the world over by failing to produce the hoped-for result of reducing CO2 levels below that necessary to sustain plant life.
And so the climate keeps happening despite being told not to by Klaus Schwabb, Al Gore, the Mainstream Media and other wise and completely benign sources with absolutely no hidden agenda whatsoever - the latter fact proven beyond dispute by government edicts forbidding anyone to say otherwise.
But the government and its parent organisation - the international charity SAAO (Save An Aged Oligarch) - have left no common-sense unturned in their effort to phase out carbon dioxide and thus save the planet if not the actual people living on it.
Top secret scientific research that cannot be revealed for top secret reasons has revealed that the process known as fermentation, used in the production of beers and similar beverages produces effervescence which, it has been discovered, is due to the release of the terrifying planet-killing gas, carbon dioxide.
The amount of carbon dioxide produced daily by fizzy beverages has been shown to far exceed that produced by automobiles, flatulence or people breathing out and this makes beer a Greenhouse Beverage that could turn the entire planet into a giant sauna!!!!!
But further research has revealed that fizzy drinks, including sparkling spring water, are also Greenhouse Beverages that release equally terrifying amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and these and beer are responsible for the unprecedented warm weather that afflicted large swathes of the planet this summer with temperatures described by experts as "often as high as normal" and believed to have been warm enough to defrost frozen chickens or melt the brains of politicians.
Therefore the government, unswervingly devoted as it is to environmentally friendly economic-suicideby-carbon-neutral, is preparing new legislation that will make the production and consumption of beer, sparkling drinks and similar threats to democracy illegal.
Politicians are reported to be confident that the ban on beer will result in the planet not spontaneously combusting any more than usual and a world free of the evils of beer will bring the nation cause for much rejoicing.
The situation is now believed to be so dire that the Secretary General of the UN, having declared Global Boiling just before the cold weather set in, has now declared Global Effervescing, which he has dubbed with statesmanlike gravitas, "even more terrifying than the boiling thing."
Meanwhile, in the UK members of the SAAOsponsored environmental activist group "Just Stop Beer" have held sit-ins across pub doorways and glued themselves to pub landlords. The police have the situation under control, however, and are keeping them supplied with sandwiches.

If you think that time's behind you, the angel said,
You err, for time in greater measure lies ahead,
So open up your eyes and lift your gaze,
Light the self-made fuse that sets your stars ablaze.
Create your future road and take it where you make it wind,
Look ahead and leave the dead of past regrets behind,
Feel yourself reborn with each new step you take
And know each choice you make flings wide time's gate.
Embrace the never-ending tale you script
And know you are the author and the star of it,
Each poignant episode and intriguing twist
Agift or curse bestowed by your own authorship.
So take this fragile world of soft and yielding clay
And from it fashion kindly better days,
For it surrenders yet to the gentler touch
To love responds, to a heavy hand not near so much.

With Wimbledon now wrapped, I’m loving wearing the world-famous tennis tournament’s official clothing collection for 2025!

Back in Surrey, with BBQ season now in full swing, I was invited to an afternoon of fun, flames and feasting at an exciting star-studded Surrey event with celebrity chefs Sam Evans and Shauna Guinn.

Cooking up a storm on the coals, ‘fire chefs’ Sam & Shauna created and served up a veritable feast on Charcoal and Gas Napoleon Grills at The BBQ Shop in Woking, where following a chilled welcome drink, we learned how to prep and cook a great steak and indulged in fabulous food samples fresh off the grill.
Grilled to perfection by the TV presenters and restaurateurs - whose smoky Chimichurri recipe was out of this world! – our delectable delights were perfectly paired with wines from Domaine des Jeanne Winery and Thatchers Cider, while we were also treated to a BBQ accessories masterclass by the BBQ shop team and browsed their fab new products.
“We had such a fun day at the BBQ Shop with our lovely friends Napoleon Grills,” Sam & Shauna told me as we said our fond farewells. “It brought a tear to our eyes to see the OG Hang Fire lovers out in style. Thanks to everyone who came and ate and drank. Let’s do it all again soon!”
Costa del Horley!
Finally, on home turf here in Horley, we recently relished a fab family feast al fresco with a veritable Spanish feel at the fantastic Costa Del Sol Tapas Bar and Restaurant.
Sipping refreshing sangria whilst sampling a selection of tantalising tapas, we also indulged in freshly cooked paella at this traditional tapas eatery, which is one of our fave local haunts and a family-run business offering a warm and friendly atmosphere with authentic Iberian cuisine.

For a true taste of Spain and a mouthwatering meal full of flavour in a family friendly restaurant, we couldn’t recommend Costa del Horley more highly!
‘Til next time, happy summer!

If you belong to or are active in the communities embraced by this magazine, you can promote yourself, your community activity, charity, club society, special interest, hobby, cause célèbre or small local business in it.
Free promotion
If you are a charity or not-for-profit club, society, association or group, you can promote free of charge. In exchange, if you can contribute a small donation this will be appreciated. Donations are not obligatory but in the interests of fairness, those who have helped with donations will, where need arises, be given priority in proportion to their generosity.
As we want to avoid the Town Crier becoming just another advertiser in which articles play second-fiddle to advertisements, we ask that where possible you submit an article about your charity, activity, event and so forth that will provide an interesting and engaging read. Such articles can be any length up to about 600 words and should be accompanied where possible with some pictures that will help grab attention plus any contact/ website/social media details you would like people to have.
Having said that, we will also do our best to place your announcements, event promo and so forth so please do send them in.
Best formats for images are JPEG and PNG.
If you are a local for-profit operation we will provide one free advertorial-style article per business. As described above we are looking for something that will engage, inform, inspire or interest our readers. Length can be up to 600 words, which would give you a full page of free advertising. Please also provide some pictures and full contact/website/social media details. Alongside the opportunity for a free advertorial we also provide very affordable advertising space (see below).
Another way to promote your enterprise (whether for-profit or not-for-profit) is to become a columnist for the magazine providing a monthly article that gives people advice and tips from your area of expertise - a great way to promote your competence and good will. In exchange for providing interesting material for our readers and abd erhapsa small donation you get monthly free advertising. To apply to have a column please email the editor at egtowncrier@gmail.com and we’ll give your proposal fair consideration.
In order to avoid becoming just another advertiser over-filled with ads, we are making only a limited amount of space available for advertising. This amounts to the equivalent of one page of advertising for every four pages of articles. It is to the benefit of advertisers in any case to have a magazine full of content people will want to read without a barrage of advertisements competing for their attention.
Advertising costs are being kept low and amount to the equivalent of roughly £10 or less per week for a quarter page ad. Our full pricing structure can be found here
To give further value for your paid advert, while you have a paid ad running in the magazine we will not run a paid ad for a competitor selling the same product or service. Where your ad clashes with a free advertorial by a competitor the advertorial will be placed in a different part of the magazine and every effort made to have your paid ad appear earlier in the magazine. Our policies regarding paid advertising are further explained here
We have also made advertising space available on the Town Crier website. See the details here
The door is also open for you to submit humorous/ satirical articles, poetry and verse, “how-to” tips and advice, interesting/entertaining news and titbits, recipes etc and if we publish your submission you can include a link to the website of your choice.

This recipe is my own invention - which is to say adapted from another recipe.
Follow these easy steps and you wind up with a “Snickers” -style sugar-free chocolate bar that is totally delicious and highly nutritious.
1.I use a plastic box that once held the rice portion of my Chinese takeaway.
2. In the plastic box or similar container, place about 15 pitted organic dates.
3. Press them down very firmly until they form a thin layer across the bottom of the container (see picture)
3. Over the layer of dates spread a thin layer of organic peanut butter (I use crunchy but you can use smooth if you prefer).

4. Next, sprinkle a thin layer of ground nuts. I use walnuts but you can use any nuts you prefer. And/or you can sprinkle a thin layer of home-made protein powder (see my recipe in the March Town Crier here).
5. Next, sprinkle a thin layer of Stevia natural sweetener (do not use sugar if you value your health). You can vary the amount as you prefer. I use about two teaspoons-worth.
6. Now make your chocolate as follows:
• Place on quarter-cup of organic coconut oil in a saucepan and heat gently until it melts ( this does not require much heat and should only take a couple of minutes).
• When all the oil has melted, switch off the heat and mix in a quarter-cup of organic cacao powder. This gives you your chocolate which you can the pour over your “Snickers” -style creation.
7. Place your creation in the freezer for a couple of hours after which you will find you have created a delicious and very healthy confection.

Not long to go before Let’s Dance Mélange is back in action!

NB: We are offering a *free taster session* at any of our dance sessions during September! See details on our leaflet...
A little background to our source of inspiration nine years ago:
During the making of the BBC television series, ‘How to Stay Young’ with Angela Rippon (2016), a German study was featured which compared the effects of dancing and the effects of gym exercise on levels of fitness and strength in adults over 60.
The study found that the dancers showed superior results in strength, fitness, and suppleness compared to those in the gym group, based on scientific and medical tests - the dancers saw a 15 per cent improvement in muscle strength, while the gym group had little difference. Dancing stimulates more muscles, tests your flexibility, uses your brain and improves your balance.

In an interview earlier this year with the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing, Angela Rippon was asked, “Can you tell us more about the scientific evidence that clearly demonstrates the physical and mental health benefits of dance?”
Ms Rippon replied:
“....When I began researching material to back up my ‘Let’s Dance!’ Project (2 March 2025), I found so many reports from medical and scientific researchers, all concluding that dance is one of the best all round exercises for mind and body, for any age and any level of experience and fitness. It ticks all the boxes. I have some 15 reports on my desk all outlining the incredible benefits of dance in maintaining and improving health and fitness....” [Ref: https://www.istd.org/discover/news/angela-rippon-on-lets-dance/]
So it seems clear that dancing is measurably better than going to the gym! It’s great for social connection.... plus, it’s definitely more fun!
