The Town Crier

Let’s help one another to do well and prosper! Issue 1 February 2025

Horley Edition

Serving the communities of Horley, Smallfield, Gatwick, Copthorne, Burstow, Outwood, Salfords and the surrounding areas

I am very pleased to present to you the very first issue of this Horley area monthly community magazine.

I hope you enjoy what we have to offer.

This magazine is about making the people of the community better known to one another and the world at large and thereby further empowering the community by showcasing its cultural richness, creativity, enterprise and good will.

The greatest wealth we have is one another.

This magazine is free. Getting published in it is free and will remain free for local charities, clubs, societies, notfor-profit groups and betterment activities.

Local businesses are also a key and crucial component of the community and whilst we are making limited advertising space available to them at generous rates, they are also offered here the opportunity to have their own feature in the magazine free of charge - which amounts, in effect, to a full page of advertising at no cost to them.

Space allocated for paid advertising will be limited to the equivalent of no more than one page of advertising for every four page of articles and features. This derives from my desire to keep the magazine about the community and its people and not have it become a glorified advertising hoarding where informative, helpful or interesting content is overwhelmed by and subordinated to adverts in profusion.

You can find the Town Crier policy on advertising explained in more detail here

Please enjoy this inaugural edition, which comes to you through the generosity and creativity of those who have submitted articles and features.

If you want to share a feature, announcement, news, update, information or even a poem with the rest of the community, please submit it now to horleytowncrier@gmail.com

I’ll always

Trudy Gillard has been a staunch friend of the Town Crier community and I am pleased to present here her unique story

Savour the Flavour !

Trudy Gillard shares the spicey story of her unique chilli sauces

Having been born of Sri Lankan parents I have always loved Asian food.

Inspired by that passion, I have developed my sauces to have a sting in their tail and pack plenty of flavour, to excite your taste buds and, of course, keep you coming back for more!

You will discover that my award-winning sauces are pleasurably versatile and can be used for dipping, marinating or drizzling!

A “Baila” is a ballad in which the poetry is of paramount importance. A ballad is a short poem suitable for singing which was originally intended to accompany a dance. The etymology of ballad is ballare (late Latin/Italian) meaning ‘to dance’. Today the Portuguese word bailar meaning ‘to dance’ is used in the context of a Ball; dançar means ‘to dance’

I started out making these sauces for our large family gatherings, giving away many bottles each year as we all share a love for flavour. Over the years they became a huge favourite of the family; my daughter puts it on everything and my brother even puts it in porridge - although admittedly that might not be for everyone.

I was encouraged to take my passion further and invite more people to enjoy the unique flavour of Baila Chilli Sauce and so here we are, dear reader, with the opportunity for you too to give your palate a real treat.

Even better, until the end of March I’m offering a 10% discount to anyone who mentions they saw this article in the Horley Town Crier!

Find and follow me on Facebook and Instagram and check in there often to discover all things Baila! I’m always experimenting so there’s often exciting new flavours for you to savour.

And please visit my website here.

As well as being a chilli connoisseur I’m also a qualified professional baker and enjoy making sweet treats as well as spicy ones!

You can find me here for professional custom cakes! And while you’re about it, don’t forget to subscribe to my mailing lists.

Love, Trudy

Aunty Jacks PetCare

Hello! My name is Jackie and I am the owner of Aunty Jacks Pet Care.

I grew up having dogs, cats, rodents, different types of caged birds and fish in the family home.

As an adult I always seemed to be looking after family and friends’ pets while they were away on holiday, and thoroughly enjoyed it, so decided to make a go of it full-time and launched the business in 2015.

When I first started the business, I was mainly looking after cats (in their home) and dogs (at mine), but it was clear there was a real need for somewhere for the smaller, more unusual pets to be cared for when their owners were away.

We recently moved to Lee Street in Horley, and I now have a lovely large garden with a couple of outbuilding so have been able to open: The Hare B&B – a small pet hotel.

I have a number of 6ft hutches with attached runs for rabbits and guinea pigs.

Tall metal and wooden cages suitable for rats, chinchillas, degus or ferrets.

And smaller cages for mice, hamsters and gerbils.

I also have space to house an animal’s own cage if I don’t have the right thing here for their stay at mine.

If you’d like to find out more please get in contact: www.auntyjacks.co.uk auntyjackspetcare@hotmail.com

Henry Smith Charity, Horley

Henry Smith Charity, Horley, has been helping people who are facing financial challenges as a result of their social or economic circumstances since 1628.

In case you are wondering how this local charity is funded; we are one of about 150 similar local charities across England that receive an annual grant from the Henry Smith National Charity.

Each one was set up in about 1628 in accordance with the Will of Henry Smith who was a City of London Merchant. The Horley Charity is independently registered with the Charity Commission and received a revised Constitution in 2024.

We provide monetary grants to people living within the Ancient Parish of Horley who are facing poverty as a result of their social or economic circumstances. We also provide grants to support charities and community organisations having similar objects to those of the Henry Smith Horley Charity and working within the Ancient Parish for the benefit of the public.

More specifically, we help individuals and families who live in Horley, Salfords, Sidlow and South Earlswood who need clothes and shoes for themselves and their children, including school uniforms.

In addition, we help with funding for replacement cookers, fridges, tumble dryers and other white goods as well as replacement beds and mattresses.

We also help students going into university and technical training who need help with study materials and trade equipment.

This is just a sample of the things we help to fund but however we assist, our aim is to improve the circumstances for each person that we assist.

All you have to do is contact us. There’s no cost or obligation for you. So why not visit our website, download an Application Form, fill it in then email or text it to us. Let’s Dance Mélange!

Let’s Dance Mélange is a dance and social club for people living in Horley, Salfords and surrounding areas.

Inspired by a BBC programme ‘How to Stay Young’ in April 2016, Let’s Dance Mélange was set up as a non-profit making club, with the purpose of providing people the opportunity to dance at their own pace, in a way that improves health, flexibility, vitality and movement over time, and, just as importantly, providing occasional group walks, outings and indoor events for all members, thereby improving well-being and social interaction opportunities.

Let’s Dance Mélange is suitable for any adult who can achieve moderate exercise without causing pain or injury to themselves.

Previous dancing experience is not needed. Any age adult is welcome, although the ethos of Let’s Dance Mélange is to have a pace and music particularly suitable for those aged 50+ years or those getting back to exercise following injury or illness.

The dancing is low-impact dancing for exercise and fun! All the dances are choreographed and led by a professional dance teacher. There is no need to know or remember dance steps, just follow the leader! Each dance can be adjusted to suit individual ability, the dance leader suggests options during the dances for various levels of fitness and individual needs.

Two Let’s Dance Mélange dancing sessions are held each week, they are :

Mondays 7.30pm at Perrywood Sports and Social Club, Salfords

Tuesdays 1.15pm at Horley Baptist Church, Horley

As a not-for-profit organisation Let’s Dance Mélange keeps fees to a minimum.

Dancing sessions are pay-as-you-go, £6 per session.

First dancing session is as a non-member,

thereafter membership of the club is required.

The membership fee is £12 per calendar year (pro rata).

It is a very friendly club where all members, new and old, always receive a warm welcome.

Horley United Football Club The birth of a truly community-focussed football club in Horley

“ club?

with decent non them were on their way to a Horley Vets match and the conversation as always turned to football. Both involved with clubs within Horley at the time felt there was a gap for a truly community focussed football club in Horley, one that balanced achievement with inclusivity, one with a vision to Unite the Community of Horley through Football. So, with a nucleus of a committee and a clear vision in place in the spring of 2023 Horley United FC was born, establishing itself as a 1 star Surrey FA Accredited Club in record time.

To begin they had 4 junior teams in the 2023/24 season and in that season, all teams had huge success, with two of them winning a cup and league promotion respectively.

Over the Summer, success continued with the U10s taking part in the Futsal League against U11 and U12 sides where they were chosen as the ‘standout side’ by the Futsal League.

U13s were winners of the Oakwood Tournament and Faygate 6 a side Tournament.

Their very own Club Treasurer, Dan Reyolds won the New Volunteer of the Year award at the Surrey FA Grassroots Awards 2024.

recruited for the 2024/25 season including a Senior Team, VETS Team and an U9 Girls Team taking the total to 11 Teams.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

The 2024 Horley Carnival was a fantastic opportunity to create further awareness of the club. Despite the weather, we were still able to have our ‘beat the goalie’ competition and held an amazing raffle with prizes all from the local community including the first prize £100 Decathlon voucher.

Following the installation of a new defibrillator at Court Lodge playing fields in July 2024 and working closely with Horley Town Council, a free session to come along and learn how to use the defibrillator was arranged. This was a crucial addition to the area with so many teams training and playing football matches every week.

The Horley United FC ‘BOOT ROOM’ was also launched shortly after the club started.

Continued on next page

Horley United - continued from previous page

A simple but brilliant incentive of a free donate/ swap service of outgrown football boots. This started initially in-house between teams but with the help of some sponsorship from Barclays for shelving and storage boxes we were able to extend to the wider community with drop off locations at Oakwood Leisure Centre, Horley Library and Horley Leisure Centre. The cost of football boots can be very expensive and 6 months later they can be outgrown. This was an opportunity to give something back to the community and kids, parents and carers can make use of the service whether they have boots to donate or are in need of a pair. We didn’t want kids to struggle with the correct footwear and so with this facility everyone can play sports without worrying about the cost.

In December 2024, we took a few of the players to the Surrey FA Headquarters in Dorking to donate over 200 items of the previous seasons kit to ‘Kits 4 Causes’, a UK-based charity that sends donated football kits and equipment all over the world, helping social development organisations and projects as well as proving fun, all through football.

Also in December we launched our referee programme for students in the Horley community aged 14 and over who would like to be a referee with the club. We have a group of students with one just recently completed the FA Referee Course which was fully funded by the club. He reffed his first game last weekend and did a cracking job!

With the 2024/25 coming to an end, we are excited to again be holding our end of season presentation in May with a few important fixtures coming up beforehand including a cup final for the U11 Emeralds and the potential for another league

promotion for the U13s.

OUR VISION FOR THE FUTURE

In terms of next goals, recruitment will soon begin for additional teams to join the Horley United family with a specific interest in all girls teams, U7 and U8. With the announcement of a possible all girls league with the Crawley & District Youth League next season we want to support this as much as we can. We currently have a U9 Girls Team who have enjoyed their first season with the club receiving feedback from the Chairman of the Crawley League ‘Horley United U9 Girls embody everything grassroots football is about’. They also enjoyed a journey to Dorking Wanderers Ladies to be mascots for one of their cup games.

Follow us on social media for an announcement soon about the introduction of ‘Little Ballers’ programme, a weekly football camp for Reception and Year 1 children.

What does the future hold for the club? Next season we would love to have a full pathway of teams of all ages and abilities working towards being a Level 2 FA Accredited Club. Medium term we would love to have our own facility so we can continue to support grassroots sports and the fantastic community of Horley.

Of course, all this would not be possible without the amazing support of sponsorship from our local community. If you are interested in becoming a sponsor for next season and one of our new teams, then please get in touch with the club.

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST

The Archway Theatre, located in The Drive, Horley RH6 7NQ, presents The Importance of Being Earnest, written by Oscar Wilde and directed by Gary Andrews.

Performance Dates and Times

7:45pm: 19 to 22 February; and 25 February to 01 March 2025;

(Matinée) 2:00pm: 22 February 2025.

Tickets cost : £13.50 (non-members); £11.50 (members).

For further Information and Tickets: visit The Archway’s website: www.archwaytheatre.co.uk.

About the Director

Gary Andrews joined The Archway Theatre in 1991 and has since then directed well over 40 productions, as well as acting in countless others. His favourites are the works of Shakespeare and Dickens but he has also directed very different types of plays, recent examples being Jeeves & Wooster in ‘Perfect Nonsense’ and Terry Pratchett’s Wyrd Sisters. In addition, during the Covid-19 lockdown, he directed an audio production of The Importance of Being Earnest.

About the Play

The Importance of Being Earnest was the last of Wilde’s four ‘drawing-room’ plays, following Lady Windermere’s Fan (1892), A Woman of No Importance (1893) and An Ideal Husband (1895). it is a farcical comedy depicting the tangled affairs of two young men-about-town who lead double lives to evade unwanted social obligations, both assuming the name Ernest, while wooing the two young women of their affections.

As director Gary Andrews comments, “ Wilde originally wrote the play with a four-act structure but subsequently cut it down to three acts, which is the version that is most often performed today. “ He further explained, “However, I have gone back to the four-act structure but applied some cuts and combined two of the acts, making for a more evenly balanced evening.

“And, stylistically, I have tried to move the play away from the rather stiff comedy of manners and catalogue of quotations it seems to have become, to reveal the repressed sauciness that is hidden between the lines of the text.

“Much of the humour still seems very fresh and modern, so I encouraged the cast to deliver the dialogue more conversationally. This way, it seems less as though Wilde is showing off, and more as though the characters are being naturally witty.”

About the Archway Theatre

The Archway Theatre is among Surrey's leading repertory drama theatres. Nestled in Horley’s atmospheric railway arches, The Archway Theatre Company has for over 70 years been surprising and delighting local residents and visitors with high quality productions, ranging from Shakespeare and the classics, through modern comedies, musicals and pantomimes, to experimental pieces that push the boundaries of the form.

A member of the prestigious Little Theatre Guild, the Archway boasts a comfortable 95-seat auditorium and a cosy, recently refurbished bar, where audience members and cast and crew can relax and enjoy the anticipation and afterglow of memorable performances.

Our ten main house productions per year run for ten nights each. In addition, there is a studio space for smaller-scale shows and our Youth Workshop and Young Adults group offer fantastic opportunities for the young people of the area to experience the thrill of putting on live theatre.

At Al Mayya K9 adoptions we rescue dogs from streets, wastelands, puppy farms and cages, and welcome them into the growing Al Mayya family with the aim of one day finding them their perfect place of refuge.

We have two rescue centres the bigger (main) one is in Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates where the staff go out and rescue the dogs off the streets and so forth. It can hold a couple of hundred dogs at any one time and they fly a few dogs over every couple of months to our UK centre, which is based in Chertsey.

Once here, they will stay in kennels at the Chertsey site - which we’re proud to say, has rehomed 835 dogs since 2015 - until someone adopts them.

The dogs are available for you to meet in Surrey (see pictures) but we do not have a catchment area and have travelled far and wide across the country to find our dogs their forever homes.

We aim to find the best possible homes for each individual dog that we rescue. Our adoption process has been developed with checks and balances to ensure both home and dog are well suited to each other and to allow for a smooth and happy transition.

Please go to our website for our current residents, we often get all shapes and sizes so keep an eye on our socials for new arrivals.

We're not set up for cash donations, but we happily accept blankets, toys or treats to help make kennel life a little brighter for our dogs!

Horley resident Georgia Gillard writes about a rescue close to her heart

Scientists have Discovered that Nobody Knows what’s Going on

Five hundred of the world's top scientists assembled in Geneva last week in a last-ditch effort to achieve a breakthrough in the search for the scientific Holy Grail known, in layman's terms, as "finding out what is going on".

It is a goal that has inspired centuries of research by some of the planet's greatest minds and original thinkers such as Diogenes, Robert Oppenheimer and Al Gore but which has yet to produce the hoped-for breakthrough in human understanding.

At last week's Geneva Conference, then, five hundred of the world's brainiest people put their heads together, compared research notes, explored the latest ground-breaking discoveries in astronomy, astrophysics, microbiology and origami and went all-out to arrive at a final, conclusive answer to that age-old question.

Modern technology has after allespecially since the invention of the British successor to the Particle Collider, the Particle Avoider - enabled scientists to explore the furthest reaches of the universe and the tiniest subatomic particles. In the words of one researcher, "Science is the stethoscope by which we have been able to listen to the very heartbeat of the cosmos."

What took place in Geneva last week was the greatest pooling of scientific knowledge and the most ambitious international scientific effort in the history of the world.

Finally, as the historic conference drew to a close, its findings were announced to a hushed and expectant world.

A press briefing was given by

none other than the renowned physicist and mathematician, Professor Stefan Dorking, who is generally agreed to be the most brilliant person on the planet and a complete genius. He rose to fame courtesy of his theories about the nature of the universe. The theories were made into a book entitled, "Is the Universe Shaped Like a Spoon? And if so, why?"

The book became an overnight best-seller outselling every other book in the Astrophysical Calculus genre, with a massive 10 copies sold in the first week!

Dorking was then generally reckoned to be the smartest bloke on the planet on account of nobody actually understood what he was talking about. The reason for that was obviously that he was so much smarter than the rest of us, everything that came out of his mouth would inevitably be totally incomprehensible. Some doubted his assertion that he had discovered the secrets of how the universe is put together but he was able to reassure the Doubting Thomases by telling them in no uncertain terms that, oh yes he had. And that was obviously enough to confirm his position as the planet's top brainiac.

One critic, the astrophysicist and Cluedo Grand Master, Alberto Einstein (no relation) nevertheless challenged Dorking's theories in a scathing article in the Sun newspaper's Sunday Scientific Supplement entitled, "Cor Wot a Plonker". Even though well over three people read the article, few took heed and Dorking's position as the planet's top brainiac proved unassailable.

Thus, Dorking found himself to

be the spokesperson for his fellow scientists and yesterday, announcing to the world that the huge scientific effort to find out what is going on had drawn a complete blank and, he explained, "We do not in fact have a ruddy clue."

He went on to explain further that in fact the more science finds out about the universe, the more weird it looks.

"In fact, all the evidence points to the fact that," he said, "the universe is very weird indeed, if in fact it is really here at all, which we are not sure about although, like most people, we are sincerely hoping that it isn't."

Moreover, it became evident that as a result of last week's revolutionary attack on the very roots of human ignorance, that nobody else knows what's going on either.

"Everybody assumes" Dorking explained, "that even if they themselves do not know what is going on that there must be someone somewhere who does. Well, we have finally discovered that there isn't."

A further discovery was made during that fateful week in so far as it is now known that the only people who know even less about what is going on than . . . er, people are psychiatrists.

I’m Trudi, and I am the Monday Horley Town Slimming World consultant. I have been the Monday consultant for the last 6 months and I'm loving the role. Since losing weight myself, I feel so privileged to be able to support others on their own journey.

At my heaviest I was almost 20 stone. I never believed I could lose weight but I knew I needed to do something because my weight and size was now affecting my day-to-day life, especially when it came to my young children. I avoided taking the children to certain places, such as trampoline parks, because I knew I was too heavy to join in. If they needed help, I wouldn’t have been able to.”

I joked about whether I would fit in the seats on rides with theme park ride attendants. Furthermore, I would avoid the rides that I knew may be a bit snugger to save my embarrassment.

In May 2022, I decided to walk through the Horley Town Slimming World doors. I was welcomed by the consultant Clare O’Connell.

Clare explained food optimising and Body Magic (the unique exercise programme). But, most importantly, IMAGE (Individual Motivation And Group Experience) therapy - group! With no humiliation or judgement, week on week I was supported by my consultant and fellow members.

In the first 6 months I lost 4 stones. Then in October 2023 I was selected to run the 2024 TCS London Marathon as part of the Slimming World team raising money for Cancer Research UK. Running the London Marathon was one of my proudest achievements.

In the summer 2024 I hit my 7 stone target the week before becoming the consultant of my very own group!

Since then, I have welcomed many new members whilst continuing to support the members that I lost my weight with.

Slimming World has literally changed my life. I’m now the active Mum I always wanted to be. I have achieved what I thought was impossible, running over 26 miles, and I now run my very own group. Feeling and being healthier and happier is priceless.

If, like me, you would like to lose weight eating foods that you enjoy and never needing to be hungry, go to www.slimmingworld.co.uk to find a group near you.

If you would like to attend my group. We are at Horley Baptist Church, Court Lodge Road, Horley, RH6 8RG

Every Monday 5.30pm & 7.30pm

I Made You Wonderful!

Churches for Horley are hosting a “Made You Wonderful” World Day of Prayer 2025

World Day of Prayer is a global ecumenical movement led by Christian women who welcome you to join in prayer and action for peace and justice. More at their website here

Women from the Cook Islands extend a warm welcome as they lead us in the World Day of Prayer 2025, inviting us to reflect on the theme: ‘I made you wonderful.’

This stunning group of 15 islands in the South Pacific boasts a rich and vibrant Māori heritage, deeply rooted in faith, community, and a profound connection to nature. As we come together in prayer, we join a global movement that amplifies the voices, hopes, and concerns of women from all walks of life.

World Day of Prayer is an international, ecumenical event that unites over 120 countries in a continuous wave of prayer. The journey begins in Samoa, flowing through Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and the Americas, before concluding in American Samoa a powerful 38-hour global prayer chain.

Each year, the service is carefully prepared by women from a chosen country, with the theme selected years in advance. Once written, the service is reviewed by the International Committee in New York, translated, and shared with National Committees across the world. From there, it is refined, discussed, and adapted for local communities.

In 2025, the women of the Cook Islands have crafted a service that will be celebrated worldwide including right here in our community. All are welcome to join us at St Bartholomew’s Church on Friday, March 7, at 1:30 PM, as we gather in solidarity with millions of others, embracing faith, unity, and the powerful message:

Connection, Conversation and Creation

Horley Men’s Shed is one of nearly a thousand Sheds that make up the UK Men’s Shed Association. The Shed concept started in Australia in the late ‘90s to bring guys working on their own in a shed together to share ideas, chat and make friends. These days good mental health and wellbeing are very important, around 90% of “Shedders” surveyed reported decreased depression, reduced loneliness and better connections.

Horley Men’s Shed is still in its infancy and based behind the Horley Health Hub, 120 Victoria Road where we have recently expanded from one to two sheds with a range of equipment and have access to a rest area. The Health Hub are very supportive by providing the facilities and help. We have also received financial support from Horley Lions, materials from Tone Scaffolding and large tins of wood preservative from Ronseal.

We are open every Tuesday from 9:00am until 15:00pm stopping for regular breaks and lunch with guys coming and going as they like. The “Shedders” can be from 18 to 108 years old with a huge range of backgrounds and skill levels, from none to experts. We are a men-only group, and we have also welcomed local asylum seekers from around the world and some special needs adults. We occasionally have a social evening which usually means going for a meal together.

Some of our “Shedders” like to work on big projects, special events like the Christmas Tree Festival over the road at the Methodist Church where we exhibited a tree made from old pallets, others work on smaller items or finishing things to sell such as bird boxes, planters and the like, whilst some are happy just to chat with a cup of tea and a biscuit. Everyone is keen to share knowledge, skills and even tools whilst repairing all sorts of things.

We are self-funding through subs (£1 a week if you can afford it) or by selling things we have made, usually from upcycled materials which we have sold on stalls at the Leisure Centre Christmas Fair and the Horley Carnival, both of which we will be attending again this year.

If you are interested just pop-in one Tuesday and meet us.

Growing Together

At the heart of St Bartholomew’s Church, a small idea has blossomed into something much bigger. The Church Spire Community Garden (CSCG) is more than just a place to grow food, it is a space where people come together, support one another, and care for the environment.

The idea behind CSCG was simple: transform an underused space into a thriving garden that provides fresh produce for the Horley Food Bank and community kitchen while creating a welcoming place for people to connect. But making that vision a reality has been a journey full of challenges, learning, and unexpected rewards.

Bringing people together has been the most rewarding part of this journey. Whether it’s

volunteers getting their hands dirty, or people simply enjoying a space to connect or share a cup of tea with homemade cake, the garden is becoming a hub of community life. Along the way, we learned that having a project like this isn’t about doing everything alone it’s about listening, adapting, and inspiring others to be part of something bigger.

The impact of CSCG is already visible, from the collection of tools donated, the allotment beds taking shape to the friendships forming in the garden. But this is just the beginning. With more support, we can grow further, reach more people, and continue building a stronger, greener, and more connected community.

If you’d like to get involved or support the Church Spire Community Garden, we’d love to hear from you. Let’s grow something amazing together.

Launching on Sunday 23 March 2025, Franklin Music Centre is an exciting new venture which brings together music and community in a creative space.

It is run by Dr Nikki Franklin and Dr Mireille Hebing, who have actively been promoting community building through music in the area for several years.

Franklin Music Centre is developing a dynamic and creative music network, a meeting place for local musicians, teachers, choir leaders and related professionals. Located at St John Centre, Earlswood, we welcome you to join the network and participate in our events, with opportunities for musicians to lead workshops and performances.

Alongside developing the music network, we offer a series of events including a monthly concert series, featuring postgraduate performers from the Royal Academy of Music and local, professional concert musicians.

We offer workshops in vocal technique, band skills, composition, music theory, Samba drumming and a range of professional development skills.

We are very proud that Franklin Music Centre has become a registered Trinity College of London Examination Centre at St. John’s.

We believe that music contributes to the development and wellbeing of individuals and communities and aim to give opportunities to develop and support music making at all levels, whether leading to future careers and wider learning, or as a leisure activity.

Visit our new website, www.franklinmusic.net for more information and to book any of our events.

Concessions are available for those on low income.

Horley Flower Club Celebrates 65 Years

Horley Flower Club is celebrating a remarkable milestone - our 65th anniversary this year!

Founded in 1960, our club has been bringing together flower enthusiasts for decades, and 2025 is set to be a year full of special events to mark our Blue Sapphire Anniversary

We meet on the first Tuesday of each month at 7:30 PM at Regent Hall, Albert Road, Horley, RH6 7JA where we enjoy inspiring floral demonstrations, workshops, and great company.

AYear of Celebration

Our Blue Sapphire Anniversary kicks off in April with a buffet supper and celebration cake for our members. One of our very own members will share his journey to becoming a demonstrator, and we’ll be treated to live music to make the evening even more special.

In May, we’re heading to the Rural Life Living Museum in Farnham for a delightful day out, and in July, we invite everyone to our annual flower show on Saturday 5th July at the English Martyrs Church Hall on Vicarage Lane.

Expect stunning floral displays, homemade cake, and a welcoming atmosphere perfect for a summer afternoon!

As we move into autumn, we have more exciting plans, including a special celebratory lunch in September and a demonstration by the talented Graham King, one of the best in the field. To round off the year, we’ll be hosting a festive wreath-making workshop in December, with more details to be announced on social media.

Join Us!

It’s a fantastic time to get involved with Horley Flower Club, whether you’re a seasoned florist, a keen gardener, or simply someone who loves flowers and good company.

Be well,

do well Let’s help one another!

This section is open for people to share their health tips and advice, whether from a professional standpoint or simply wanting to share something that has worked well for you.

So we’ll kick-start this feature with a very workable tip from David on how you can handle insomnia.

Remember, if you have a successful action or some knowhow regarding health and wellbeing that you think could help your fellows, please send it in.

And if you so desire, be sure to include your name, contact details, website etc.

The address to send your helpful advice is horleytowncrier@gmail.com

Acupressure remedy for insomnia

This I believe is an acupressure technique, which I found by chance and discovered works very well for me when I have trouble – as I often do going to sleep. Nine times out of ten I’m fast asleep within minutes of doing this simple action and the sleep tends to be restful. Once or twice I even fell asleep in the middle of doing it.

Give it a try and see whether it works for you.

• Step 1: hold up your hand as shown in the photo.

• Step 2: locate the small indentation just under the hand bone as marked in the photo.

• Step 3: using firm gentle pressure with your other thumb, press the spot once a second for 20 seconds.

• Step 4: then hold your thumb on the spot firmly for a further minute and a half or slightly longer.

And that’s it! Sleep well!

One of the successful ways of protecting your health and wellbeing is eating well.

So tips for healthy eating definitely need to be featured in this magazine.

Plus, we will feature a monthly healthy recipe in “Recipes that Won’t Kill You”.

You are invited to help the community by contributing a Recipe that Won’t Kill You or advice on healthy eating and, indeed, healthy living in general.

A third feature we intend to run in upcoming issues is a food-growing section, so we are looking for advice, successful actions and similar input from people who grow their own crops, are a dab hand at allotmenteering, raise chickens and so forth. In particular, we are interested in articles by people who grow organically, chemical-free, no-dig permaculture and so forth.

So if you have anything you’d like to tell the community about any of the above, please submit a writeup to horleytowncrier@gmail.com

Horley Lions Club

Horley Lions Club CIO Registered Charity No. 1179840

Serving Horley, Reigate, Redhill and the surrounding Villages

The Horley Lions Club has now been active for 60 years and most members of the local community will have come across us in some way. We organise events throughout the year to raise funds and bring the community together.

It is the funds raised from our events that allow us to help local people. In 2024, we donated to local and national charities so that that they could continue their invaluable work. On an international level we work with the Lions International Foundation to support Humanitarian efforts such as the war in Ukraine and the recent earthquake in Morocco where US$100,000 was made available to the local Lions Clubs.

The Horley Lions now have a membership of 34 active volunteers all committed to supporting our local community. It is these people who pay for the running of the Lions Clubs so all the profit made goes to Charity.

If you would like to learn more about joining the Horley Lions or want to be part of our events, you can log on to the Horley Lions website www.horleylions.org.uk or you can email activities@horleylions.org.uk.

Shot Full of Rock and Friends!

Introducing Shot Full Of Rock Ltd, home of the rock opera theatre script ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Is Dead… But Not For Everyone!’.

This fast-paced and entertaining script was originally workshopped live over three nights in London with full cast and fivepiece band incorporating 70s classic rock covers woven into the show.

Shot Full Of Rock & Friends are currently recording brand-new, all-original songs and underscores, written exclusively for the script’s humorously-dramatic storyline with its compelling and quirky characters.

Much of the recording so far has taken place at The Hive Rooms Recording Studios in Horley

Featuring the superb rock vocals of Doris Brendel and X-Factor finalist Ben Mills, two of these preview tracks are available to listen to alongside the character lyrics on the Shot Full Of Rock Ltd website’s ‘Music’ page www.shotfullofrock.co.uk/ music .

You’ll also find links to download from Bandcamp or Amazon and you can hear the preview tracks wherever you love to listen to music!

See www.shotfullofrock.co.uk/news and follow their Instagram www.instagram.com/shotfullofrock for lots more on the script, the music and future releases!

The community has many fine poets so it is fitting that we have a section in the magazine where they can be featured. Please don’t be shy and go ahead and submit a poem or two for inclusion here.

This section is open for children as well as adults so please state your age when submitting if you are under 14. The address, as ever, is horleytowncrier@gmail.com.

And just to get this section started here’s a poem from yours truly.

Calling all Poets! WELCOME!

you movers and shakers, you takers of chances and daredevil dreamers.

Come, you poets and painters, designers and sculptors, make your romances, play your staves, your lines, your rhymes, your speeches on the stage of the mind’s eye.

Come, you whose art delivers meaning to the meaningless dark, light the humdrum with your hopeful glances and sagacious glimpses of worlds imagined out of the void turning to the rhythm of your quickening dances.

Come, surfing the ages with a song on time’s breakers. Speak of your castles and towers in the loudest of whispers.

Raise cathedrals of sound with a sweep of your bow, the caress of your keys, the kiss of reeds that free the bars of song and sunlight through the stained glass you made in the blank slate of oblivion.

Come, caress the ivories that birth new formations, like sculptures of light on mountainsides forming portraits of the morrow that smile in their dawning and with the deftest of fingers strum the chord that wakens the acorn of creation in the hearts of our children.

Come, be the oak in the fresh light of morning, the drum of its heartbeat, the thrill of life pulsing

ARECIPE THAT WON’T KILLYOU

I thought it would be a great idea to have a recipe page in each issue where you can share your healthy organic, recipes. With the food industry often feeding us poor-quality junk, we can do a great deal to help ourselves and one another in the food recipe department.

So just to get the ball rolling, here is a recipe for chocolate you can enjoy without shortening your life! Or anyone else’s for that matter.

Make your own sugar-free healthy organic chocolate

This is very easy to do with a remarkably tasty 100% organic result.

Melt one half cup of organic coconut oil in a saucepan. Go gently because the oil has a low melting point. Stir continuously.

Once all the oil is melted, turn down the heat and sprinkle in about 3 teaspoons of natural sweetener such as inulin or stevia. You can vary the amount according to your preference. You can vary the quantity according to how much of a sweet tooth you have. Personally, I find that 3 teaspoons work for me.

Sprinkle in one half cup of organic cocoa powder though a fine-mesh sieve to make sure you don't get any lumps. Stir continuously.

Once everything is mixed (it takes a minute or so) remove from the heat and put the mix into a mold. I use a tin lid that is about the size and shape of a large chocolate bar but you can use whatever you want, such as an ice-cube tray.

Allow to cool a bit then place in the fridge for an hour or so until it is hard.

You now have a basic bar of plain chocolate.

You can also grind up some nuts and sprinkle a fistful of these into the mix if you want. I use walnuts or cashews.

Also if you want to get a bit more fancy pour the molten mix into an ice-cube tray so that you’ll wind up with about a dozen small individual chocolates.

And you can vary this even further ( I recommend this) by putting a small dollop of sugar-fee jam into each “cube” before the mix has set. That way you end up with chocolate pieces with soft fruity centres. I use St Dalfour jam and prefer strawberry but you can use whatever flavour you want.

The beauty of this is not just that it is easy and healthy, it enables you to have unique chocolate tailor-made to your own taste.

Do you know a recipe that would help others eat healthy?

You do? Then please share it with the community. Send it to horleytowncrier@gmail.com

Submit!

The door is now wide open for your submissions for the March issue. Here’s a rough guide to the type of features we are looking for:

• Information, news, updates, announcements about your club, society, charity, good cause, art, event, community activity, show, service or small local business.

• Promote yourself as an artist (photographer, painter, sculptor, band, musician, composer, film-maker, cartoonist etc.)

• Healthy wholesome organic recipes

• Humour and satire

• Poetry and verse

• Book and film reviews

And I’m sure there are many other topics I haven’t thought of so be daring, be creative! Get in touch.

Email: horleytowncrier@gmail.com
