Note: The present vase appears to relate to a select group of Imperial celadon-glazed wares, often associated with production in the Imperial kilns under the supervision of Tang Ying (1682-1756). These wares are notable for their high quality and variety of creative form and decoration This particular subgroup of celadon-glazed wares, with decoration carved or molded in low relief, exhibit this variety of form and decoration
These often appear to be inspired by archaic wares, particularly ancient bronzes, but also the wares of the early Ming dynasty. This is evident not only in terms of form, but also in the use of decoration such as archaistic kui-dragon scrolls (angular or more organically foliate in nature), or dense lotus scrolls and lappets, in addition to the incorporation of later auspicious motifs such as Buddhist or Daoist symbols or homophonic symbols such as bats or ruyi scepters
To date, another example of this technically difficult form has not been located. Other Qianlong mark and period celadonglazed vases decorated with carved or molded archaistic kuidragon scrolls are known, but none with this highly unusual
wan-shaped or swastika-form mouth. Wan translates as “10,000”, signifying unlimited abundance or longevity, an auspicious motif, particularly suitable for a birthday celebration or similar important event. For an elaborate celadon-glazed vase with swastika-ornamented ribbons at the shoulders, with Qianlong seal mark in relief, see “Qing Imperial Monochromes the Zande Lou Collection”, Shenzhen, 2005, pp 120-121, no 43 For a pair of Qianlong mark and period celadon-glazed vases with lip in the form of an “Endless Knot” in the Collection of the National Palace Museum, Taipei, see “Catalogue of the Special Exhibition of K’ang-hsi, Yung-Cheng and Ch’ien-lung Porcelain ware from the Ch’ing Dynasty in the National Palace Museum”, Taipei, 1993, p 128, no 101 (one illustrated)
The decoration of these graceful lobed vases, incorporating bats and ruyi-heads is of the more curvilinear stylized manner, is similar to that found on the Qianlong mark and period vase sold at Sotheby’s, Hong Kong, April 8, 2007, lot 708 For other examples incorporating angular kui-dragon scrolls, see the archaistic flask-form vase sold at Christie’s, New York, March 28, 2006, lot 116, decorated with elaborate mirrored bands of kui-dragon scrolls to the neck, body and foot For other examples of celadon-glazed vases with angular kui-dragon scrollwork in low relief, see the vases sold at Christie’s, New York, March 20, 2014, lot 2181; Sotheby’s, Hong Kong, April 8, 2009, lot 1652, and two similar bottle vases, sold Christie’s, Hong Kong, April 8, 2011, lot 3018 and Christie’s, New York, March 22, 2018, lot 771

Provenance: From a Private Shropshire Collection
Note: Double-walled reticulated ( jiazeng linglong) vases may be called the last great Qing innovation in porcelain design, although Qing potters did in fact not invent them at all Already some three hundred years earlier, in the early Ming period, did potters at the Longquan kilns in Zhejiang province come up with this amazing technique, probably so as to provide with this sensational break-through a noteworthy answer to the rising competition from Jingdezhen The present vase is a remarkably close copy of a Longquan example of the early 15th century, such as that in the Samuel P Harn Museum of Art, University of Florida, in Gainesville, Florida, sold in our New York rooms 22nd/23rd September 2004, lot 205 (fig. 1).
While the delicate, exquisitely styled relief designs on the neck and lower part of the present vase have all been translated from the somewhat rough and rustic character of the Ming version into the refined design language of the Qing, the overall decoration of the vase retains all the powerful rhythm of the Longquan original Only one other companion piece appears to be recorded – and these vases were probably made only in pairs – a vase in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Zhongguo taoci quanji [Complete series on Chinese ceramics], vol 15, Shanghai, 2000, pl 85 (our fig 2)
In their bold and powerful aspect these vases are very different from other celadon-glazed reticulated vases, with are equally rare and known only in pairs: compare the pair of octagonal vases, which are also separated today, with one remaining in the Palace Museum from the Qing court collection (Kangxi, Yongzheng, Qianlong Qing Porcelain from the Palace Museum Collection, Hong Kong, 1989, p 440, pl 122), while the other was sold in our New York rooms 12th June 1984, lot 292 and more recently again in these rooms, 2nd May 2005, lot 516. Although similar in glaze colour, decoration technique and style, the octagonal vases are firmly anchored in the Qing aesthetic, with only vague reverberations of Longquan celadon
prototypes The present style may thus represent an early example of this Qing revival technique, where the original was still followed rather closely
Openwork vases imitating Longquan ware are already mentioned in Qing court records of AD 1742, and in AD 1743 Tang Ying submitted a memorial to the Qianlong emperor recording his presentation to the court of a total of nine jiazeng linglong (‘layered openwork’) and interlocking ( jiao tai) vases; see Liao Pao Show’s introduction in the exhibition catalogue Stunning Decorative Porcelains from the Ch’ien-lung Reign, National Palace Museum, Taipei, 2008, pp 27f With its lively, yet elegant and restrained decorative scheme the present example clearly bears the signature of Tang Ying’s craftsmanship and its close stylistic affinity to works from the Yongzheng reign also suggests manufacture very early in the Qianlong period. Eventually, as the development went further and further away from the Ming originals, the discourse with the past so highly treasured by the Qing emperors and other contemporary connoisseurs, was completely lost With the inner core decorated in enamels and in addition made to revolve, and the necks provided with elaborate handles, as in a celadon-glazed example with plenty of gilding, sold at Christie’s Hong Kong 31st October 1994, lot 660, the Longquan origin of this technique is long forgotten Openwork vases imitating Longquan ware are already mentioned in Qing court records of AD 1742, and in AD 1743 Tang Ying submitted a memorial to the Qianlong emperor recording his presentation to the court of a total of nine jiazeng linglong (‘layered openwork’) and interlocking ( jiao tai) vases; see Liao Pao Show’s introduction in the exhibition catalogue Stunning Decorative Porcelains from the Ch’ien-lung Reign, National Palace Museum, Taipei, 2008, pp 27f £3000-£5000

YONGZHENG SIX CHARACTER MARK AND OF THE PERIOD (1723-1735)
天蓝釉水丞 雍正 1723-1735
大清雍正年制款
delicately potted with a compressed globular body of harmonious proportion, rising from a neatly finished foot to a short upright mouth, the vessel is covered overall in a clair-de-lune glaze of exquisite and even tone, ranging from the faintest lavender-blue to a soft misty celadon at the rim The glaze subtly pools around the footring and displays the satin-smooth texture characteristic of the finest imperial porcelains of the Yongzheng reign

The present example, with its flawless surface, elegant proportions and exceptional clair-de-lune tone, represents an outstanding and particularly well -preserved specimen of this highly sought-after imperial form.
The soft, gentle hue of clair-de-lune is one of the most treasured Qing glazes, and was reserved exclusively for Imperial porcelains The colour appears first in Kangxi porcelains it was one of the most successful monochrome glazes created in Jingdezhen during the Kangxi period and was reserved exclusively for imperial porcelains, during Yongzheng period only a very small group has been produced and it has representing the refined elegence of Yongzheng aesthetic; clair-de-lune wares were made in the same eight classic shapes for the writing table, as peachbloom-glazed wares, but are considerably rarer

The restrained elegance of the form, devoid of extraneous decoration, exemplifies the refined aesthetic of the Yongzheng court, which favoured purity of line, subtlety of colour and technical perfection The delicate translucency and flawless surface of the glaze reflect the potters’ exceptional control over glaze chemistry and kiln firing at the Jingdezhen imperial kilns Small water pots of this type, known as shuizhu ( 水注), were used by scholars and calligraphers for moistening inkstones, and their diminutive scale combined with their jewel -like glaze made them treasured objects on the scholar’s desk

莲池鸳鸯纹菊瓣纹定窑盘 宋/元
the interior is crisply moulded with a lotus pond and mandarin ducks, the water teeming with lotus blossoms, seed pods, leaves and floating duckweed, conveying a lively natural scene The lotus leaves are shown variously unfurled or curled, and beneath one large leaf a pair of mandarin ducks meet in gaze as they glide across the water, swimming, playing, or gently resting afloat 14cm diameter
Provenance: From a private English Collection
Note: The body of Ding ware is typically fine, dense and thin, making the use of mould -impressed decoration particularly demanding This piece was formed in two stages: first, a mould was used to press out the chrysanthemum-petal shape while the body was leather-hard; afterwards, a second mould was applied to impress the lotus pond motif at the centre The craftsman needed to maintain a precise and regular form while achieving a clear, crisp impression without distortion an additional technical challenge in the production of this piece
Since the advent of porcelain, celadon dominated ceramic history, and even among the Five Great Kilns of the Song dynasty, four produced celadon wares To achieve a white glaze, the iron content in the body and glaze had to be reduced to below 0.75%, in order to produce a pure white tone –a technical difficulty long pursued by ceramic artisans
The kilns at Dingzhou in Hebei flourished after the mid -Tang dynasty, firing white wares for six to seven centuries Ding ware developed distinct characteristics in different periods Early wares show a white tone with a bluish tinge, while later examples, due to changes in technique, kiln temperature and fuel, display a creamy or pale yellow hue The result is soft and tranquil, reminiscent of a graceful beauty in repose Ancient Chinese artists and ceramic craftsmen were adept at drawing inspiration from nature, and forms based on lotus, sunflower and chrysanthemum blossoms appear frequently in ceramic design
Comparable example: An identical Ding dish, molded with a design of mandarin ducks in a lotus pond and applied with a copper rim, from the Michel Calmann Collection (1977, no MA 4163), is on display at the Musée Guimet, Paris.

Note: This type of Steam Cup is also known as a Butter Lamp in Tibetan culture, and holds a significant place in Tibetan Buddhist traditions, symbolizing the illumination of wisdom The tradition of using butter as fuel for lamps dates back centuries and is deeply rooted in Tibetan culture. Lamps are often intricately decorated with sacred Sanskrit mantras and serve as devotional offerings to the enlightened beings
The Steam Cup or Butter Lamp has appeared in various materials such as cloisonné, silver, porcelain, lacquer, and jade
Use of such beautiful and technically difficult artistic methods to create these lamps reflects the artistry and religious devotion of the Tibetan people
It was a practice of the Chinese Court to donate such exquisite butter lamps to Tibetan Buddhist temples during the Ming and Qing dynasties and this underscores the cultural exchange and the importance of religious ceremonies during that time. The current lot, with ‘Da Qing Qianlong Nian Zhi’ mark, is just such an example of imperial patronage of Tibetan religious culture, likely having be created as a devotional offering to a Tibetan Buddhist temple during the Qianlong period
A comparable example of cloisonné steam cup in the Palace Museum Taipei, Museum No 故琺000095N000000000, also published in the “Ming and Qing cloisonné collection from The Palace Museum, Taipei“ 1999, pl 161,p 74

The figures are elegantly rendered with flowing robes and finely detailed hairstyles, the silk threads subtly shaded to create volume and movement. The composition is animated by cloud scrolls and distant pavilions, suggesting the ascent to the heavenly realm The palette of soft blues, celadons, ivory and russet is typical of high-quality Qing court or workshop production The panel is framed by a wide silk brocade border This impressive tapestry would likely have been commissioned for a celebratory or birthday of Imperial family, conveying wishes for immortality, harmony and divine favour
