FR.GERRYVISITSDONBOSCOTARLAC,LEADS LAMPSASSEMBLYONTHISYEAR’SSTRENNA

In his annual visitation to the Educative Pastoral Community of Don Bosco Tarlac scheduled from March 13-17, Fr. Gerardo “Gerry” N. Martin, SDB, Provincial Superior of all the Don Bosco Schools in the Philippine North Province (FIN), convened a special Lay Mission Partners (LaMPs) assembly to personally meet with the school’s faculty and staff, March 15, 2024.

The focus of the assembly was to reflect on the year’s strenna, a tradition passed down by Don Bosco himself that provides words of wisdom, serving as direction during the entire year.

This year’s strenna, “The dream that makes you dream: a heart that transforms wolves into lambs,” was at the forefront of discussions during the aforementioned assembly.

Fr. Gerry emphasized that progress cannot be achieved without understanding and embracing the foundation of the institution saying, “We cannot move forward without looking back on the dream at 9.”

Don Bosco’s ‘preventive system’ was also reiterated by Fr. Gerry to the LaMPs as it is their goal to, “teach them [Bosconians] right away the ugliness of sin and the value of virtues.” >continue on page 3

As of now, the construction has reached 90% completion. Opening its doors in August 2024 and providing a new home for approximately 800 Senior High School students, the building’s structure is set to be completed by the second week of April giving ample time for the fit-in of furniture and equipment.

Last January 28, 2024, various activities were held at the Cresendo Estate to further showcase the move of the Senior High School to a new home. A fun run featuring more than 2000 Bosconians and members of the Educative Pastoral Community burn their fats away along the Industria avenue of Cresendo. After which, Grade 10 and 11 students went to the beingbuilt campus to have a glimpse of what’s about to welcome them come August with a campus tour and some Q&A with Ayala Land Cresendo Estate managers. The latter shared Cresendo’s transportation plans which will be highlighted by a transport terminal right across the campus which will connect both National, Regional, and Local public transport routes. Side by side with the campus tour,

Grade 12 student representatives gathered outside the building for a treeplanting activity. 12 trees were planted to mark the 10 sections of each Senior High School level, 1 tree courtesy of the SHS Student Council, and the final one care of the Lay Mission Partners - the Salesian Educators.

Adding to the alumni batches to pledge their support to the endeavor is the class of 1985 headed by Mr. Pipo Soliman who pledged to take care of furnishing the needed furniture and equipment for the clinic. About 20 classrooms and more facilities await batch or individual sponsors. We continue to look for generous groups and individuals to help make this dream of a new, improved, and sustainable Don Bosco Campus come to fruition. Committee meetings and consultations with various groups like DepEd and Ayala Land Inc. continue to ensure a smooth transition toward the endgame. Stay tuned for more updates as the Don Bosco Tarlac Crescendo Project moves closer and closer to its grand opening.

Bosconians reclaim PanaPana Street Dance title two years postpandemic

Georgiena Ann F. David

Tarlac City saw a triumphant return as Bosconians reclaimed the trophy, being champions of the 5th Pana-Pana Festival Street Dance Competition after a two-year hiatus, January 18, at the Tarlac City Plazuela.

Sir Angelo Legaspi, one of the teachers-in-charge, noted the victory as a testament to hard work stating, “Hard work has truly beaten talent – ‘yan ang pinatunayan nila sa buong Tarlac.”

Brenan Marco Cabenta, a member of the props team, shared the challenges faced during their preparation, “Our plan for the said Pana-Pana Festival from the beginning was to be ambitious in all aspects…

so big and ambitious, to the point that we thought we couldn’t finish on the said deadline.”

Bosconians’ reliance on their own capabilities was evident throughout their trainings as there were no professional choreographers that were hired, every element, from prop to costumes was handcrafted by the students themselves, and holidays with their families were also sacrificed.

Amidst the ups and downs, Prince Angelo Ferrer, a grade 11 student and leader of the street dance team, admired his peers’ resilience – one of the most remarkable aspects of their journey for him saying, “Yun po siguro yung pagiging masaya nila kahit napapagod sila.

Alam ko pong mixed emotions pa rin, but at the end of the day, nakangiti sila kahit pagod po sila.

The Don Bosco community did not fail to show its support as students, teachers, and even parents took on roles such as handling make-up duties, assisting the props team in finishing the backdrops and other materials, and even handing out food and drinks to the performers.

“‘Nung the day itself, may mga bata na out of nowhere tumulong… lahat sila inalis nerbiyos ng team. They looked happy…” marked Sir Angelo on the overwhelming support they have received.

“Who really owns Don Bosco?”

Let us try to dig deep and see that it is not just about the ones in charge – the Salesians, nor the teachers. It is about a shared commitment and purpose that goes past job titles.

At first, one might think the Salesians of Don Bosco, the group that started it all, are the main owners. Of course, they bring the spirit, the values, and the big dreams that Don Bosco had. Sure, they do play a big part in keeping Don Bosco's ideas and dreams alive, but owning means more than just being part of a group.

Lay Mission Partners, on the other hand, are the hidden stars, the ‘unsung heroes’ in this story. They are the ones working hands-on in the field – molding the minds and hearts of the youth. They turn Don Bosco's teachings into real lessons that students hold onto even outside the four corners of the classroom.

Yet it doesn't end there. The ‘ownership’ might also include past and present students, parents, and everyone around. Their help, whether by speaking up, giving, or getting involved, keeps the school’s mission strong.

They too become part-owners –keeping Don Bosco’s dreams alive and

making sure they stay meaningful and strong for the ones coming next. So, who really owns it?

Together, we own Don Bosco.

It is not about singling out one group or declaring one specific person. It is not about having things or being in control – it is about sharing a common goal deep in the school's DNA.

It's about everyone... in their own way of keeping the mission going and moving St. John Bosco’s legacy forward in making a transformative impact on the lives of the young entrusted to the institution’s care.

10 COLUMN Reason:Makeitmakesense,Loving-kindness

Don Bosco’s principles – reason, religion, and loving-kindness – have been the pillars of the educative pastoral community’s system, down to our practices as teachers inside and outside the classroom.

Culture shock to some new Bosconians how the students and teachers casually say hi and throw jokes at each other like friends. Little did they know we build this kind of comfort and connection

My encounters and interactions with the students could answer maybe at least one of these questions. One time after dismissal, I talked and explained calmly to one of my students how he was being noisy and distracting during the class discussion. We have been joking around outside the classroom before this happened. He apologized and promised it won’t happen again, and it has not happened again since.

Afraid that we might be fostering an unruly child rather than a respectful and loving one, it has been a challenge to balance loving-kindness and reason, what should weigh more when both are good and right until you realize you can discipline while loving: you can be firm with your rules without shouting, you teach them that the consequences of their actions are not punishments, so, they would understand.

For as long as students still say hi to their teachers in the hallways, outside the four walls of the classroom after they have been held accountable for their behavior, we can be at ease.

It was never loving-kindness over reason, or reason over longkindness, or loving-kindness versus reason, but loving-kindness AND reason. Kids as they may seem, but our Bosconians can understand reasons that come from a place of love and care. One of the learning theories says that meaningful learning stays longer and more effective than rote learning. It is safe to say that meaningful learning in Don Bosco, behavior wise, is through loving-kindness. You explain your reason, should make sense. It will, with loving-kindness.

A pandemic ago, the whole education system had undergone massive adjustments. There were sudden shifts from face-to-face classes to online classes to limited face-to-face setup last year, 2023.

In November 2023, the Department of Education administered a National Achievement Test despite the crucial changes. Don Bosco Tarlac got “very low” mean percentage scores in Math and Science under problem solving with 29.28 and 37.44 MPS, respectively.

Following this, the schools division suggested to strengthen the instruction and assessment.

In addition, they suggest “to look for other factors that might have contributed to these very low MPS.” So, that’s what we’re going to do, straight to the point or sharp points:

There were obvious gaps in the teaching-learning process brought about by the pandemic when instructions and assessments were limited to what could be done online or during the LIMITED face-to-face classes. Rather than addressing these gaps first, DepEd says, “take this test and reflect.” Moreover, the lack of materials from the national level affects

the quality of any school’s preparations. Schools resorted to borrowing materials from each other; materials accounted to one school were used by another. Should we really “look at the specializations” of the teachers in these subjects when we have far-reaching situations like these?

Looking at the bigger picture, are the NAT 2023 results a reliable measure of the students’ capacity in these subjects and the quality of education at Don Bosco in general?

‘24GrandAlumniHomecoming:TogetherasJUAN

After attending the alumni homecoming, I found myself inundated with a wave of emotions and reflections.

Stepping into that familiar environment, surrounded by faces I hadn't seen in years, sparked a profound realization within me.

First and foremost, I was struck by the passage of time. It's incredible how much can change in just a few years. People I once knew as teenagers had grown into adults, each with their own unique paths and stories to share. Some had pursued higher education, others dove straight into the workforce, and a few had embarked on entirely unexpected journeys. Yet, despite our divergent paths, there was an undeniable bond that connected us - the shared memories and experiences of our formative years.

As conversations flowed and laughter filled the football field, I couldn't help but reflect on the significance of those high school years. Back then, it often felt like an endless cycle of classes, exams, and social drama. But in hindsight, those years were a crucial chapter in shaping who we've become today. The friendships forged, the lessons learned, and even the challenges faced all played a role in molding our identities.

Moreover, the reunion served as a reminder of the importance of staying connected and "United as Juan". Life moves fast, and it's easy to lose touch with people who were once an integral part of our lives. Yet, reconnecting with old friends reminded me of the value in nurturing those relationships, even as we navigate the complexities of adulthood.

WEAREFINALLYHOME

The alumni of the 1999 batch of Don Bosco Tarlac recently celebrated the annual grand alumni homecoming event dubbed "Together as Juan." It was a momentous occasion marked by excitement, camaraderie, and nostalgia, commemorating the enduring spirit of the Bosconian ethos. However, the path leading up to this event was not a walk in the park. It was a journey filled with hurdles that tested our mettle and strengthened our bond.

The journey of the DB99 batch was a magnificent tapestry woven with threads of both challenges and triumphs. As the batch navigated the various twists and turns of activities to fundraise, we embodied the admirable qualities of resilience and grit instilled within us in the formative years of our lives at our beloved alma mater.

Our collective achievements and individual successes became the cornerstone of these efforts, marked with a sense of grandiosity and splendor that truly fit such a remarkable group of individuals.

"Misadsad Tana" was the word everyone awaited as we gathered all our networks and talents to pull off the suavest fundraising ever.

The event's highlight for me was the conferral of the esteemed "Natatanging Bosconian Award" for 2024, a distinguished honor recognizing exceptional levels of excellence and service in an alumni's chosen industry. This accolade, for me, was not just a personal achievement but a testament to our entire batch's shared values and aspirations. It symbolized our journey from the classrooms of Don Bosco to the pinnacle of our professional and personal achievements, mirroring the journey of every Bosconian and our unwavering commitment to greatness in service to others.

The narrative of the DB99 batch is a chronicle of resilience. We faced a multitude and variety of emotions, clashes of perceptions, and tests of bonds.

MISADSAD TANA

But perhaps most importantly, the alumni gathering prompted me to reflect on the concept of growth and change. Seeing how far we've all come since those high school days filled me with a sense of optimism for the future. It served as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the endless possibilities that lie ahead.

Leaving the reunion, I felt a renewed sense of gratitude for the journey that brought me to where I am today. It was a poignant reminder that while high school may be a chapter of our past, its impact continues to resonate in our present and shape our future.

Yet, we emerged stronger, united and imbued with a more profound sense of purpose. Our reunion was a testament to the unwavering bond and commitment we picked up from the Salesians during our time at the school: "Do not put off till tomorrow the good you can do today," from the words of the founder Don Bosco himself.

The alumni homecoming was a heartwarming testament to the influence of education and the strength of a community. Attendees renewed their commitment to upholding St. John Bosco's legacy, ensuring continued growth and success for future Bosconians. I am proud to be part of the DB99 batch.

The DB99 grand alumni homecoming was an outstanding event, a true celebration of a journey marked by struggles and victories. It served as a powerful beacon of hope and an invaluable source of inspiration for the alumni present and the Bosconian community. It reinforced the timeless values that Don Bosco cherished, and its impact will be felt for years. As the night echoed with the familiar hymn of gratitude and pride, the DB99 batch stood tall, embodying the school's spirit and our community's values. The Alums of Don Bosco Tarlac are stalwarts of a legacy that will continue inspiring and guiding future generations.

THE FRIENDSHIPS FORGED, THE LESSONS LEARNED, AND EVEN THE CHALLENGES FACED ALL PLAYED A ROLE IN MOLDING OUR IDENTITIES. “ “

It was this vision that started it all, and as Bosconians, we are all party to Don Bosco’s dream.

If you are here now, it is because you have been called to participate in that dream. The two main protagonists in Don Bosco’s dream were our Lord Jesus Christ and our Mother Mary. We have been lead here to make Don Bosco’s dream a reality.

Like Don Bosco, we too are given a mission by the blessed Mother. To be instruments of Joy and peace in this failing world. A world falling to materialism and hatred. Of fake relationships, and distorted notion of love.

The youths of this world, the youths in our communities, the barangays you are a part of, need you to lead them back into the fold. Be leaders of men.

But to do these, you need to first; make yourselves knowledgeable and skillful. Learn the different trades and be professional men and women yourselves. Respected in your own fields.

Second, listen to mama Mary’s teachings of bringing ourselves closer to her son Jesus by praying the Holy Rosary, regular visits to the Blessed Sacrament, saying regular confessions and receiving regularly the Holy Communion. The seed of Faith planted in good soil. These actions will give you strength of the Spirit.

And the third, show your love for others not by words but through deeds. Showing kindness to those who need it most. The person who has been neglected, dejected and despised by others. If you do these, you turn the wild animals into sheeps just as the dream showed. The world looks for peace, but it defines peace as the absence of war and conflict. No my dear boys and girls, peace is achieved by conquering hatred and replacing it with “agape “ true love and kindness.

To sum up my three points. Don Bosco’s dream at 9 is the framework of Don Bosco’s Preventive System. Reason, when you are able and capable of giving it through proper training and education, Religion, when you listen to Mama Mary’s teachings of drawing us closer to her Son Jesus Christ through prayers, confessions and regular communion, and finally Loving Kindness, it is the fruit of the first and the second that will flow outwards from you as Bosconians and by God’s Grace Future Salesians of Don Bosco.

Quoting from the holy scriptures. “If you keep My commandments, you will remain in My Love, just as I have kept My father’s commandments and remain in His Love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.” John 15:10-11

Now dear bosconians, the question I now ask you is, what is your own dream @ 9?

To whom it may concern,

Before I came to this institution, I was deprived of things l always wanted to do. The things that make me happy, and all the things that make me stand out. These are all because of professional changes.

But when I stepped into the four pillars of this institution. I saw an opportunity that will truly contribute not just to my career growth but also to my personal growth.

To my dearest New Generation Lay Mission Partners, Don Bosco Tarlac is such a lifechanging world; and a good training platform for providing the best of the best opportunities that they can offer.

Of course, in every industry, there will always be struggles or issues that we will surely encounter. There are some professional aspects and personal.

That’s why, this newsletter is a symbol of strength and a driving force that echoes the same fervor of a true Salesian educator. FROMTHEEDITOR Editor-In-Chief Karl Karl Karl ABOUT THE EDITOR The Editor-In-Chief is the current Institutional Research Officer of Don Bosco Tarlac He is also the Co-Chairman of the Institutional Research Council which manages the research culture within its reach 12

It has been ten months since I became the Rector of this institution, and I still want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to all the Educative Pastoral Community (EPC) of Don Bosco Tarlac. Your unwavering dedication, tireless efforts, and countless sacrifices have been the foundation of success for Don Bosco Tarlac.

The day before the competition of the Pana-Pana Festival 2024, I was asked to give an inspiring message to our students who just had their final practice and preparation. I have seen the dedication and effort they have put into this piece of presentation. Many of them even sacrificed their Christmas break. All of them went home late after a strenuous practice or working on the props. Appreciative of all the work our Lay Mission Partners and students have done I shared with them a speech that came from a movie “Friday Night Lights” (2004). The character coach Gaines gave these inspiring words.

“Being perfect is not about that scoreboard out there. It's not about winning. It's about you and your relationship with yourself, your family and your friends. Being perfect is about being able to look your friends in the eye and know that you didn't let them down because you told them the truth.

And that truth is you did everything you could. There wasn't one more thing you could've done. Can you live in that moment as best you can, with clear eyes, and love in your heart, with joy in your heart? If you can do that gentleman - you're perfect!”

I can truly say our Bosconians and LaMPs became ‘perfect’ to each other. And I wish to say this to every member of the EPC. We have successfully staged many events and competitions and have emerged victorious. Besides Pana-Pana Festival 2024, we topped the TCPEIA competitions in sports and academics, at the Boscolympics among other Don Bosco schools. We have been recognized by various government agencies as centers of excellence that could serve as examples to society such as the DOST, DepEd, and DOLE.

I could not but be proud of our Bosconians who have shown us that they truly are becoming the Servant-Leaders Don Bosco wished them to be and ‘good Christians and honest citizens’ our society needs. The heart and soul of our institution are the faculty and staff. Their commitment to shaping the young minds of our students, fostering dreams, and creating a nurturing environment is commendable

where recognition, awards, and appreciation for our school are truly visible. Despite challenges, they stood tall, ensuring our students receive the best education possible.

That’s why as we walk through this year, making history, I am proud to present to everyone the Volume 2 Issue 1 series of 2024 of FORZA, the official newsletter of the Rector’s Office. Here we are writing more and highlighting every achievement that we have. We are proud to share these with everyone. Continue helping DBTITarlac achieve its vision and mission. In return, Don Bosco Tarlac promises its best to provide commendable deeds for the whole community.

In this season of reflection and gratitude, let us move forward bound by appreciation. Together, we’ve celebrated victories and forged a resilient community. As we step into the next chapter, let our collective efforts continue shaping a brighter future for future generations.

Thank you and All the best to everyone!

RECTOR’S MESSAGE

I am a Bosconian, a man or woman of PRAYER.

I am a Bosconian, a man or woman of CHARACTER. Vhernadette Subaran, "As a first time adviser na naging parte ng kanilang spiritual retreat, natutunan ko na every student has their own situation at home. And that, as their adviser, I should make a home at school, through me and their classmates, to have a place where they can be at ease and just be kids." Ito ang ibinahagi ng first time adviser na unang beses din maranasan ang spiritual retreat sa Don Bosco Tarlac.

I am a Bosconian, a man or woman of SERVICE. .

"Kahit mahirap man ang route (sa Mt. Talamitam), kinaya namin.

I am a Bosconian, a man or woman of EXCELLENCE.

The power to change: Jesus transforms us into a better one

One of my favorite philosophers once said “All things pass and nothing stays, and comparing existing things to the flow of a river, you could not step twice into the same river.” (Plato, Cratylus 402a) As we all know, change is the only permanent in this world therefore we must cherish every moment of our life.

There are a lot of things that we can learn about change. First, we must embrace change, embracing change may be hard but it will allow us to let go of the past. It will also give us a better opportunity, and it will allow growth to take place. Second, we must learn to detach. It is so hard for us to detach ourselves especially when it is pleasurable but sometimes, we need to let go and accept the reality that it is only temporary.

Third, limited time, from the moment we are born we are to die. Time is limited so must enjoy every moment. And lastly, acceptance. It is the best thing we can do.

We are now in the season of easter. It is the season that changes everything. As Fr. Ben affirmed, “no one will come near to Jesus without changing.” He likened Jesus to a burning wood. Jesus is like a fire that gives light into the world especially when He rose from the dead. We can’t go near the fire without changing just like going near to Jesus.

There are a lot of accounts in the Bible that show whoever went near Jesus has changed their lives. The blind see the dead arise, the sick are cured, etc. These are just a few proofs that you will change if you go to Jesus. I experienced change when I went to Jesus. He changes me a lot, I feel more relaxed, comfortable, and secure. He showed His love for me even though sometimes I abandoned Him. He makes the move for me to become a better person. Most of the time, He didn’t answer my prayers maybe it will not be good for me or sometimes I just need to wait for the right time before He will answer. Just keep on praying to Him and thank him because He had done so many things but you just didn’t recognize them.

Time is bound, we must enjoy every moment because we don’t know what will change later on. Don’t be afraid of it, we must move forward. If we wanted to change ourselves, we must go to Jesus. We must change for the better. If you want your life to have meaning, search for Christ.

Don Bosco Technical Institute Tarlac Triumphs as Overall Champions at Boscolympics 2024

The long-awaited Boscolympics, a testament to sportsmanship and camaraderie, returned to the arena after a hiatus induced by the pandemic. From March 1st to 3rd of 2024 , the halls of Don Bosco Makati reverberated with the echoes of competition as seven schools vied for glory in a multitude of disciplines including Basketball, Volleyball, Football, Futsal, Table Tennis, Badminton, Chess, and Taekwondo.

Don Bosco Technical Institute

Tarlac emerged as the indisputable victors, clinching the coveted title of overall champions. Led by their resilient delegates, they showcased unparalleled prowess, dominating various sports throughout the Boscolympics.

The event commenced with the stirring words of Venerando P. Medrano, the President of Don Bosco Athletic Association (DBAA), and a seasoned coach hailing from DB Tarlac. His remarks ignited the fiery spirit of competition as athletes from the different Don Bosco schools in the Philippine North Province (FIN) converged on the playing grounds of DB Makati.

Reflecting on the challenges faced during the Boscolympics, Mr. Medrano highlighted the need for extensive training, particularly for elementary students who had to rediscover their athletic potential amidst the pandemic-induced disruptions. Despite these obstacles, the athletes' enthusiasm and dedication shone through, embodying the true spirit of sportsmanship.

Following intense battles on the field, the Boscolympics culminated in an electrifying awarding ceremony held in the Savio Dome Here is the list of winners from Don Bosco Tarlac in each category:

With medals adorning their chests and memories of hard-fought battles etched in their hearts, the athletes of Don Bosco Tarlac stand as shining examples of determination and sportsmanship, embodying the true essence of the Boscolympics.
