Anti Social Behavior in Douglas Dear Editor As a resident of Alden in Douglas I am appalled at the amount of ant-social behavior in the area adjacent to our estate. The residents of Alden have had to put up with this for years! We have contacted Cllr. Forde, Cllr. Collins and Cllr. McGrath without any success! Gangs of young people, continuously drinking and having God knows what else, at these all night parties, are the cause of much disturbance and of grave concern to the residents. These lands are adjacent to Alden and the South Ring Road! The land owner should be made develop these lands! Dare I suggest that our Councilors Forde, Collins and McGrath request a meeting with the landowner and do something to solve this serious problem so the rest of us can live in peace! Regards Nora O’Brien Alden, Douglas

Customer Service! Dear Editor, At last I have someone who is not trying to rip me off. Most garages seem to think women drivers are stupid but I have at last found one that doesn’t! Macroom Motors who are the main Toyota dealers for West Cork. It all started off with the rubbers surrounding the headlamps on my Toyota getting a bit perished. My car is a ’99 and a great old trooper. Never let me down once in all the year I have had it. I lost one of the rubbers altogether and rang Macroom Motors to see if they could help me. They said they would have to order them and made an appointment for fitting. When I arrived I was offered tea or coffee while I waited (free I might add). Ten minutes, and the job was done. No charge for labour. “ Twas only a small job”. The man pointed out to me that the belt on the power steering was very frayed and would need replacing soon. I told him to order it and said I would come back to have it fitted the following week. Tea or coffee and chocolates while I sat in a nice armchair watching T.V. in the waiting room. Talk about comfort, courtesy and coffee. Sure where would you get it? The staff there are very nice and polite, and as helpful as can be. Top marks to them. I believe they have taken over Lehane’s Garage at Wilton and if the set-up is as good as Macroom they will be a pleasure to deal with. They are an example to all for speed, efficiency and good customer relations. What a lovely world we’d be living in, if all businesses treated their customers so well.

British Humour Is Different “Due to current economic conditions the light at the end of the tunnel has been turned off.”

Yours sincerely, Jody McGlinchey Bantry. Disclaimer: Any views or opinions expressed in these letters are solely those of the individual author(s) and do not necessarily represent those of The Douglas Post.

Poetry Corner with Ronnie McGinn

Sinead Tierney a Co. Clare native, currently residing in New York City sent us this week’s poem. To anyone who has been to the United States or is aware, as we all are, about their problems related to gun control, she succeeds in capturing an atmosphere that rings familiar and almost sidetracks the current and sensitive subject that is generating many controversial opinions, and yet the reader is left pondering as much at the end as at the beginning. It works! And I’m sure you will enjoy reading it and I have absolutely no doubt that it is a subject that will trigger many a conversation.

Wedding Day Stress Here are a few ideas of how to cope with your big day. Get lots of sleep.

Stay organized.

This might seem obvious, but anyone who is facing a big day knows how hard it can be to sleep the night before. Whether it’s excitement or nerves keeping you up, it’s important to find a way to get some quality rest before the big day.

Disorganisation is one of the main reasons things can fall to pieces on a big day. If you make an effort to stay organized beforehand, you’ll be facing much less stress on the big day and you’ll have more time to enjoy all of the festivities taking place around you.

Eat a healthy breakfast. When you’re stomach is full with nervousness, it can be hard to rationalize the benefits of a healthy breakfast, but truly it’s the most important meal of the day. Skipping it could lead to feeling weak all day so make sure to grab some grub the morning of!

Don’t procrastinate. Leaving things to the last minute is certainly a way to cause you to feel panicked. When you’re preparing for a big day, try to get as much done ahead of time as possible so you don’t have to spend time worrying and fretting over the little things.

Ask others for help. No matter what you’re facing in life, asking for help is always a good thing. Many people are afraid to ask, but when it comes to a big day, don’t be. Asking for help is a great to make sure everything gets done and it cuts way down on stress.

Take a time out. Once your big day has arrived, it can be so easy to get swept up in everything that you forget to take a break to just be with yourself. No matter what your role is in a big day event, it’s always helpful to take a little break -- even just a few minutes -- to help relax yourself.

See the big picture. In the midst of big day festivities, it can be hard not to examining all of the details and focus on the tiny things. But if you take a step back and look at the big picture you’ll have a much better perspective when it comes to the day’s little mishaps.

Do something relaxing. If there are a million things to be done for a big day, it seems like it would be crazy to take some time to relax, but that’s exactly what you need to do to make yourself more productive. Plan a spa visit, take a walk, meditate -- do whatever makes you feel at ease!

Deal with your emotions. Big days can come with a lot of emotional baggage and instead of ignoring or avoiding your feelings, be sure to be attentive to them and recognize them. You are entitled to feel how you feel and if you don’t allow yourself to experience your emotions; they’ll most likely get the best of you.

Take deep breaths. There’s usually some sort of mini-crisis when it comes to big days and it’s important that, when faced with such a situation, you take deep breaths. Take a minute or two to breathe and get your mind to a place where you can think clearly. Then react.

Think positively. No matter what goes down on the big day, it’s so, so important to think (and speak!) positively. Quite a few people will probably be in high-stress mode and it is extremely helpful to have someone around to see the positive in every situation. Look for the good -- no matter what.

Have a back-up plan. A great way to really cut down on stress for the big day is to have a back-up plan. If you’re not 100% focused on only one way to do things and you’re open to options, you’ll be a lot less stressed if something goes awry. Be prepared and keep your options open.

Consider other people. It can be very tempting to get caught up in your own situation when it comes to the big day, but take a step back and consider other people and how they might be reacting or feeling. If you do this, you’ll be a lot more compassionate of others (and a lot less likely to focus on the “me” aspect of stress).

Enjoy the moment. Most importantly - live in the moment. No matter what’s going on during the big day, keep in mind this phrase: “This is it.” Most likely, there won’t be another big day like this one so take it all in, soak it all up, and be sure to enjoy every single moment.

Even with all of the planning in the world, there are bound to be situations you just cannot predict when it comes to big events. With all of the little puzzle pieces of the day to be put in place, it’s no surprise that sometimes a piece or two goes missing. But remember: that’s okay. The big day doesn’t have to be perfectly flawless to be amazing. The key when it comes to big events is making the most of them No matter what kind of big day you have planned, there’s bound to be a bit of stress involved. Remember these two things: (1) it’s normal to have stress on a big day, and (2) you can manage your stress, no matter how unfathomable that might seem. You have the power to control how you react and what attitude you choose to have. Whenever you’re faced with a difficult or stressful situation, remind yourself that you can choose, at any time, to be positive. That choice can get forgotten when things are hectic and people seem to be panicking and nervous, but it’s always there. Choose to be positive and whatever you encounter -- a last minute cancellation, a nervous bride, or a missing bridesmaid -- you’ll be able to handle it.

“His wide range of interests kept him involved in so many parts of civic life in Cork, from community organisations to sport and politics. Each time he was involved he gave it everything and inevitably he was a success. This was evident from the positions he held; a former President of the League of Ireland, honorary life president of Kilreen Celtic and treasurer of Ballyphehane Pipe Band. “Dan has left a great legacy of which his family can be very proud. I extend my deepest sympathies to his wife Kathleen and their family. At this sad time for them I hope that they find comfort in the enormous contribution Dan made to his community and support from his very wide circle of friends.”

Lynch’s Pharmacy Winners In National IPN Awards Lynch’s Pharmacy in Douglas, Cork has been awarded the prestigious Irish Pharmacy News Awards in the Innovation in Service Development category for independent Pharmacies. Sheena and Garavan Lynch of Lynch’s Pharmacy, Douglas, Cork have been nominated for an award after they identified a gap between what the customers knew and what they needed to know leading them to develop a pharmacy based health management and information service. The award ceremony took place in Dublin’s Burlington Hotel and was attended by over 400 representatives from the pharmaceutical industry throughout Ireland. Acknowledging the huge importance of these awards to the pharmacy profession, Minister for Health

Dr James Reilly says, "The Irish Pharmacy Awards, taking place in May 2012, are an important opportunity for the pharmacy sector to recognise pharmacists and pharmacy personnel who have made a significant contribution to the improvement of patient care and pharmacy practice in Ireland. I commend those pharmacists who are dedicated to innovation and excellence in patient care." “We believe it is essential that those working in community pharmacies, providing immediate and essential healthcare advice and treatments, are honoured and rewarded as individuals and teams for their outstanding achievements and recognised as innovators.” NAtalie McGinnis Irish Pharmacy News sponsors of the awards.

Seasonal Affective Disorder Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a condition where you develop symptoms of depression in the darker winter months each year. In Ireland and other countries north of the equator, the symptoms usually develop sometime between September and November and continue until March or April. Symptoms tend to be worse in December, January and February. At least 1 in 50 people in Ireland are thought to have SAD. Many more, perhaps as many as 1 in 8 people, have ‘winter blues’ - a less severe form of the condition. SAD is less common in countries near to the equator where the hours of sunlight are more constant and bright throughout the year. SAD usually first begins between the ages of 20 to 30, but it can develop at any age.

‘For Help with your Health’ 14 - Thur 31 January ’13

It affects four times as many women as men.

• Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or uselessness.

Light therapy for seasonal affective disorder

What are the symptoms of seasonal affective disorder?

• Poor motivation. Even simple tasks seem difficult.

When symptoms develop in the winter, they are similar to those that occur in the non-seasonal ‘ordinary’ type of depression. The following is a list of common symptoms of depression. You may not have them all, but several usually develop:

• Poor concentration. It may be difficult to read, work, etc.

This treatment consists of sitting in front of a special bright light for a session each day and/or using a dawn simulator. Light intensity is measured in lux. Ordinary light bulbs are not strong enough as they only give out 200-500 lux. To treat SAD you need a light source of at least 2500 lux (about 10 times that of ordinary light bulbs).

• Low mood for most of the day, nearly every day. Things always seem ‘black’. • Loss of enjoyment and interest in life, even for activities that you normally enjoy. • Abnormal sadness, weepiness.

often

with

• Sleeping problems. • Lacking in energy, always tired. SAD can markedly impair quality of life in winter. Symptoms tend to improve and go fairly quickly in the spring, over a week or so. Some people develop great bursts of energy and creativity in the spring. In a small number of cases, as spring arrives the mood changes from depression into an abnormal ‘high’ and elated mood (mania or hypomania).

Carrigaline Community News Carrigaline Macra National Indoor Soccer Finals. Carrigaline Macra mens indoor soccer team consisting of Andrew Daunt, James Walsh, Philip Sweetnam, Colin Ross, Shane Ross, Patrick O Sullivan and Ollie Cronin competed as Seandun winners in the Macra National indoor soccer finals in Gormanston, Co Meath on Sunday 13th January last. 24 teams from clubs around the country took part. There were 6 groups each consisting of 4 teams and the winners of each group went through to another group stage consisting of 2 groups of 3 and the winners of the 2 groups battled it out in the final. matches comprehensively in the first group stage and qualified for the next group stage where they beat Camross and drew with Bree Macra to reach the final where they faced Castlereagh Macra from Co.Roscommon.In a closely contested match Carrigaline were unlucky to go down 2:1 to their opponents and finished National runners up which was a great achievement for the club.As a result of finishing runners up the club can compete again in the competiton next year when they hope to go one step further. The ladies finals also took place on the same day and was won by Cork club Berrings Macra.

Know Your Rights : School closure due to bad weather Question: My daughter is sitting her Leaving Certificate in June 2013. What happens if we have a spell of bad weather this winter and her school closes? Will the days lost be made up?

school has to close in the New Year due to bad weather, the school authorities may shorten the midterm break by staying open up to and including Wednesday 13 February 2012.

Answer: Post-primary schools are obliged to open for 167 days per year. The decision to close a school rests with the school management authority. Any decision to close is taken in the interest of children’s safety, having assessed the local risks and having consulted, as appropriate, with school transport operators.

Students in Junior or Leaving Certificate classes may be due to take an oral or practical test during the time a school is closed during severe weather. If this happens, the State Examinations Commission will contact your daughter’s school to make alternative arrangements.

Decisions on how to make up for lost days will be taken locally by the school authority, following their assessment of tuition lost. The Department of Education and Skills Circular 0034/2011 provides guidance for schools in relation to making up for time lost due to unforeseen closures, including severe weather. Where other measures are not considered adequate, the school may decide to shorten the February mid-term break. Post-primary schools are due to close for a week, from Monday 11 February 2013 to Friday 15 February 2013 inclusive. So, if your daughter’s

But it rhymes nicely in Spanish In an attempt to change their reputation for being brutal and corrupt, federal police in Mexico offered a summer camp for 3,000 children as young as 6. TV stations covered the camp activities, and even made national broadcasts of the children singing a song the police taught them: “I never had a father, and now I never will, the only one I had, I killed,” the kids chanted. Second verse: “I never had a mother, and now I never will, the only one I had, I put into a home.” And the third: “I never had a sister, and now I never will, the only one I had, I threw into a ditch.”

Young @ Heart by Phil Goodman

There is no doubt the older generation know how to enjoy themselves as we witnessed on Sunday afternoon at the Lord Mayors Tea Dance in the City Hall. Austerity and recession forgotten as the Corks pops orchestra conducted by Evelyn Grant were truly magical, the ladies dressed in beautiful ball gowns and the gents just as elegant danced the afternoon away. On Monday our Young at Heart Group went to the local cinema to see Les Miz. It was wonderful. I recommend you go and see it,. After the film we went back to South County for dinner, fantastic, enjoyed by all. Painting and Art Therapy Classes start back next Monday 4th February at 2pm in GAA Hall. These classes inspire confidence in different ways as you are painting to your own ability. All very therapeutic. Colour means different things to people. Paint with a free hand maybe the sky, water, fields etc. The sky has so many shades of blue each time you look it is different. So keep looking up “painting also allows you to show your feelings through colour”, as well as offering companionship in a relaxed atmosphere. Reminder to people to apply for the Pendant alarm which is 100% grant funded. These alarms offer security and independence in your own home and peace of mind to your family knowing help is at hand within 15 seconds if needed. Care-Ring phone link is a friendly phone call to people in the community many of whom are unable to leave there homes and look forward each week to our call. We are a listening ear for people to talk, sometimes we may be the only voice they would have heard that day. If you know someone who would benefit from this service please let us know, you can contact me on 4363867. If you would like to represent Douglas in the over 60s talent competition which takes place on the 19th February in St Columbas Hall. The winner will take home the Luke Philpott Perpetual

trophy. If you can sing, tell a story or a poem, we would love to hear from you. There is much to be gained from community activities, forget the bad weather, the recession, keep active join us every Thursday in the Library for Tai--Chi, from 10-45 to 11-45 all welcome! Sean and his wife, Aoife, had been debating buying a new car for weeks. He wanted a pick-up-truck. She wanted a fast little sports-like car so she could zip around through the traffic in town. He would probably have settled on any old pick-up-truck, but everything she seemed to like was way out of their price range. “Look!” she said. “I want something that goes from 0 to 200 in just a few seconds. Nothing else will do. My birthday is coming up so surprise me!” Sean did just that. For her birthday, he bought her a brand new bathroom scale. Nobody has seen or heard from him since.

You were a flower in our garden of life, That garden is empty, now you are gone, Our thoughts are confused as emotions run rife, But here in our hearts, you will always - live on..

Deegee Dogtraining Services, Glanmire Living with a misbehaving dog can put a lot of pressure on the owner and family, in many cases the dog simply cannot be seen to be part of the family any more. Once we understand why our dog is doing what he/she does, we can implement a plan for rehabilitating the owner/dog relationship. I am committed to using only kind, gentle, reward-based methods with all dogs I help : these methods make learning fun for a dog, they make the dog want to learn and please its owner. And all the while, treating our dogs with respect and gentleness can only help the bond between owner and dog. The next group classes will be starting in Douglas Community Centre and Ballyseedy Garden Centre. These sessions use an effective and gentle approach aimed to help your dog achieve normal health and wellbeing again. I set up DEEGEE DOGTRAINING SERVICES to help train people to understand and train their dogs. I

Family Ties with Geraldine Blake

“Who told you that suited you?” “Who told you that suited you?” said my granny to me as she jabbed her bony finger into my chest. I was a little confused and replied, “No-one.” Then why are you wearing it?” I was seventeen and going through my Bob Dylan phase. I was the coolest in black suede boots, black jeans, black polo neck jumper and the piece de resistance, a dark tan suede jacket that I had bought for £12 at a second hand clothing stall in the English Market. This was the item of clothing that she objected to. I merely shrugged at her lack of taste and moved on. Sometimes, when we would ask our father to do something for us, he would reply, “You’re big enough and ugly enough to do it yourself.” When I use this line on my boys, they get very offended. Children are so sensitive these days.

I was coming out of Douglas Park when I came across a boy of about 10 years with a younger child, a girl, in a headlock. As I passed them, he flung her to the ground. I barked at him, “You shouldn’t treat little girls like that.” He sneered back at me and

said, “She’s my sister!” I told him that if I ever met his mother, I would report him. Half an hour later, I met the boy again with his father. They were out looking for me. The father was more upset about the way I spoke to his son, which I admitted was a bit harsh, than the fact that his daughter was being strangled on the street. It ended amicably. The next day, I was in Roche’s Stores coffee shop. Three tables away, a toddler was standing on top of a table with not a single adult within a 20 yard radius. After my experience the day before, I did nothing. A passing member of staff noticed the boy and said to him in a concerned voice, “Where’s your mammy?” She would have been well within her rights to be annoyed because if the boy had slipped and hurt himself, Roche’s Stores would have had a law suit on their hands. But instead she spoke in a soothing voice as she cajoled and coaxed him down and looked around to reunite him with his rightful owner. It’s not always what you say; it’s how you say it.

Things to do This Week Now that February is here, and the daffodils are already peeping out, it’s time to think of the days ahead. We’ll try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing. Now not everything in this article may apply to you or to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.

Flower Garden

Lawns & Hedges

A Carousel is GREAT FUN Brainteazer Last Weeks Teazer: A train crossing from France into Germany suffered a terrible accident exactly at the border. According to international law in which country should the survivors be buried ?

Last Week’s Answer. You don’t bury survivors.

This Week’s Teazer: Ali ben-brahim was a salt dealer, every day he went to the market with two huge sacks of salt tied to his donkey. One hot day, as they passed along the banks of the Tigris River, the donkey broke free from Ali and plunged into the cool water. When the salt-seller finally got the beast to leave the river, it immediately noticed that much of the salt had dissolved was therefore 26 - Thur 31 January ’13

considerably lighter. After that, no matter how hard Ali tried, he could not prevent the donkey from diving into the river and ruining its load of salt. But when it came to lateral thinking Ali himself was no slouch. One day he loaded up the donkey and, as usual, the animal plunged into the river. Then it learned its lesson and never tried that trick again. What had Ali done?

Douglas Hall FC by Finbarr Buckley Umbro U-12 Local Cup Douglas Hall 2 ; Riverstown 1

The Hall edged past the visitors at windy Moneygourney on Saturday morning. After conceding a penalty, the hosts responded by conjuring an equalizer before half-time, when the lively Eamonn Kiely drove a free-kick to the back of the net. The second half was evenly contested as both teams searched for the winner. The deadlock was finally broken by Kiely, who tucked away a through ball from Kevin Collins. Credit must go to both teams for providing such an entertaining game in such difficult conditions. Best for the home side were Eoin Coughlan

and a man- of- the- match performance from Jack Ryan. Umbro U-16 National Cup Douglas Hall 2 ; Buttevant 3

Buttevant won this cup tie through their determination to never give up as throughout the match they were outplayed by a Hall side who created many scoring chances but failed to convert them into goals. Luis Franco and David Barry scored for the Hall with Eoghan O’Leary and Diermuid O’Mahoney superb throughout. FOOT-NOTE: The Club Management wishes to thank all players, coaches & parents who recently helped out with our Church Gate collection.

Passage AFC notes Jamie O,Sullivan has made the U13 Cork representative squad. This is big news for us as a club because Jamie plays with the clubs U13s who play in Division 3. It’s very hard to be selected for the Cork sides if your playing outside the Premier and 1st Division. It’s a huge endorsement of his talent and great plus for the club. As a result of waterlogged pitches due to the heavy rain all the clubs games this week were cancelled.

The numbers drawn for this weeks lotto were 4, 14 & 26. There was no winner of the lotto. €50 winners were, Dubs C/O John Fahy and Sean C/O Mags. Next weeks Jackpot is €850. The well-behaved setter was dressed in a frock coat to match the bride’s dress.

Tramore Athletic Club U 13 Local Cup Tramore Ath 4 Leeds ‘A’ 1

The opening exchanges were tense and tight with both sides battling for midfield supremacy. Joseph Cregan was prominent and when he linked up with Eoin O’Donovan on 12 mins it led to the opening goal, with O’Donovan’s shot deflected in by an unlucky defender. Tramore continued to dominate but a resolute Leeds defence, well-marshalled by their excellent number 5, kept themselves in the game. Harry Forsyth was introduced just after half time and only 2 minutes on the pitch he doubled Athletic’s lead with a good finish, but killing off the game was briefly postponed just 60 seconds later when Leeds pulled one back from a corner despite the valiant efforts of Jason O’Mahony clearing the initial header off the line. If Tramore had lacked a bit of pace in the first half the introduction of Andrew O’Connell at half time began to put a bit of zip in to the attack and on 43 minutes he restored the 2 goal advantage, racing clear from the defence on the half way line and finishing with a lovely left foot shot. Four minutes later Forsyth finished the scoring with his second to seal the victory. Tramore Athletic A 4-0 Carrigaline Utd ‘A’

On a heavy pitch in Tramore Park, the lads produced a fine display to advance to the next round of the local cup. Tramore started brightly, having plenty of possession and creating lots of chances. The pressure told after twelve minutes when Loughlin Mc Grath slotted home to give Tramore the lead. It didn’t take Loughlin long to double the advantage when he finished from close range to make it two nil to Tramore. Loughlin is showing fine form at the moment having now scored three times in two games. Tramore were playing really well now and when team Captain Alex Walsh scored a fine goal from outside the box, Tramore went in at half time looking comfortable at 3-0 up. Carrigaline improved their performance in the 2nd half and made it difficult for Tramore to create further chances. Jonathon Kearney continued to dominate proceedings in the middle of the park while Ryan O Leary was having a great game on the right wing. Tramore’s fourth goal came with five minutes to go when substitute Ben Healy slotted home. U 12 Local Cup Douglas Hall A 2 Tramore Athletic 4

A depleted Tramore Athletic squad

due to illness and injury travelled to Douglas Hall for the first round of the U12 local cup. This game was always going to be a tricky tie for Athletic on an unfamiliar Astroturf surface and 2 mins into the game didn’t help themselves by going 1 down. A common feature of Tramore’s performances this season is conceding early and giving themselves an uphill battle for the rest of the game. Some good perseverance by Robert Cashman earned Athletic a free kick on the edge of the ‘Hall box on the quarter hour mark. The resulting free kick rebounded from the ‘Hall keeper and Killian McGowan was on hand to drive a ferocious shot into the back of the net. An injury to the dependable Tadhg O’Mahony forced the left full to come off and was replaced by a very impressive 2002 player Jay Gubbins who was called up late onto the squad. Tramore were now in full flow and McGowan began to dictate the proceedings along with Foley and Luke Burton. Tramore were now playing some superb possession football and Douglas Hall were chasing shadows. Good link up play with Conor Foley on the left led to the third goal of the game with McGowan firing in from distance. Just before the break hard working Zach Burton put Foley through and the forward finished with aplomb. Tramore were good value going into the break at 3-1 but the second half was a different proposition. Against the slope and a driving wind ‘Hall started to come into the game more and soon were rewarded with a penalty when keeper Conor Purcell collided with the ‘Hall centre forward. The penalty was converted and now Tramore had to dig deep. The back four were resolute and solid defending by quartet of Gubbins, Towe, Al Salihi and Daly, kept the best of what Douglas could throw at them at bay. Athletic were counter attacking very effectively and found it difficult to convert several 1 on 1 situations. Burton was taken down in the ‘Hall area with 5 mins remaining on the clock and McGowan stepped up and dispatched the resulting penalty into the goal for his hat-trick. And so it finished 2-4 to Tramore Athletic who now look forward to the next round. It was a timely boost and hopefully they can carry that form into the league over the coming weeks.
