You don’t have to live with chronic pain. There is an answer.

Haven CH IROPRACT IC

A New Approach to Pain Relief in Douglas, Cork Haven Advanced Pain Relief and Family Wellness Care, a mul disciplinary, state-of-the-art clinic specializing in the treatment of adult and paediatric musculoskeletal and neurological disorders and the relief of chronic pain, opened its doors early this year in Douglas, Cork. Dr. Michael Clifford, founder of Haven and a respected U.S. Board Cer fied Chiroprac c Physician, U.S. Board Cer fied Physiotherapist, Cer fied Chiroprac c Sports Physician, and a Primary Care Physician in the State of California, took me for a tour of the clinic during the recent open house event, and explained his goals and treatment philosophy. “My purpose,” he began, “is to provide a comprehensive, mul disciplinary approach to treatment, u lizing my medical, chiroprac c and physiotherapeu c training, which has been shown in the U.S. to yield the most effec ve results, but remains rela vely unknown here in Ireland.” Walking me through the spacious, plant-filled, wellequipped clinic, which he describes as “California style”, Dr. Clifford explained what this approach entails. “The most important first step is to provide the pa ent with an accurate diagnosis. A surprising number of people are suffering needlessly, some mes for years, because they have never been given a proper diagnosis, and consequently have never been provided the appropriate treatment for their disorder. O en mes this results in the deteriora on of their condi on over me, causing them significant disability and loss of the quality of their life.” Natasha, the endearingly friendly clinic office manager, offered me a cup of the Starbuck’s coffee and assorted teas provided for pa ents in the small kitchen adjoining the comfortable wai ng area, before Dr. Clifford con nued, “Once I have determined the cause of a pa ent’s pain and dysfunc on, I employ a range of therapeu c modali es that have been proven empirically to be the most effec ve in trea ng the pa ent’s condi on.

My goal is to not only relieve the pa ent’s pain, but to correct and heal the underlying cause to prevent its recurrence, restore op mal health and normal func oning, and avoid the necessity for invasive procedures such as surgery.” Si ng in his small but a rac ve office, Dr. Clifford also discussed the importance of the quality of the doctor-pa ent rela onship in achieving the best healing outcome. “Treatment and healing is a coopera ve endeavor and depends not only on a doctor’s knowledge and exper se, but on clear communica on, respect, and empathy. It is common for pa ents who have a painful condi on to feel anxious, confused, or frustrated, a sense of not knowing what to do or where to turn for answers. For this reason I endeavor to give pa ents all the informa on they need to clearly understand their condi on, its cause, op ons for treatment, and prognosis, so they may make informed decisions. In situa ons in which I diagnose or suspect a condi on that is outside the scope of my prac ce I refer the pa ent to the appropriate medical professional, and if necessary will act as a pa ent advocate. It is also very important that pa ents know they can talk to me, that they can express their fears and concerns and that I will take the me to listen with empathy and respect. Pain has an emo onal and func onal impact on pa ents’ lives, on their rela onships, work and hobbies, some mes their most basic func oning, and it is important that they know I am as invested in their healing as they are. In these ways pa ents are able to develop the trust, confidence, and sense of hope that helps facilitate their treatment and ul mately their healing. Concluding our conversa on, Dr. Clifford said, “My aim, ul mately, is to not only provide pain relief and correc ve healing, but to restore, as much as possible, the joy and freedom with which my pa ents previously lived their lives. And our success is tremendously gra fying.” by Mary Burns

DOUGLAS COMMUNITY NEWS Your community news proudly sponsored by Douglas Credit Union Douglas Writers Group The next meeting of the Douglas Writers Group will be held in John O'Sullivan's (Business Centre), Douglas on Friday 12th Sept at 5.30 pm. The Douglas Writers Group meets on the 2nd Friday of every month at 5.30pm. Shamrock Lawn The newly formed Shamrock Lawn Residents Group have set up their own face book page. Just go to Shamrock Lawn on Facebook to see what they're up to. Douglas Tidy Towns Anyone walking about Douglas cannot but notice the huge effort that has been made by Tidy Towns volunteers who planted myriad tubs and planters in our public spaces but also the fantastic effort made again by the business people of Douglas which make both East and West Villages a pleasure to wander through or drive by. You can see some of these in a selection of photos taken around the area. The Tesco tall wall garden under the Douglas overpass is absolutely stunning with the planting in amazing condition, including lots of purple buddleia to attract butterflies and flowering plants, huge blooms of blue and white agapanthus and the blazing orange montbretia. It makes the walk from East to West Douglas along that stretch of road a pleasure. Close by, the garden by the ring road underpass in Douglas East is show-stopping at present with several large castor oil plants, again with agapanthus, giving a great display. Do take note as you drive by…it will lift your spirits. Unfortunately, keeping spirits high can sometimes be hard to maintain for the Tidy Towns' volunteers who put in so much effort as there has been some vandalism, such as plants being taken and pots being overturned, which is a pity. Great bargains in plants have been available in several local outlets this summer and make great presents for your friends and family. The Fingerpost Roundabout is lacking colour at the moment, but the rose beds that were there had to be replaced as they had succumbed to disease, and one cannot replace new roses in the same beds as they wouldn't thrive. But plans are afoot by McDonalds Restaurant, who sponsor the landscaping of this area and their landscaper, John McCarthy, has plans to replant it in the autumn with new shrubs that will bed in over winter. We look forward to seeing the new scheme. Meals & Wheels This service will be operating as normal over the summer months, delivering nourishing food, cooked from fresh every morning (except Sunday) at the community centre and delivered to the client's home by a driver, all on a voluntary basis. Dressing For Our Age

I was asked the question some time back "Should women dress age appropriate?"

My answer to the question "everyone should dress age appropriate from the very young to the mature". Between the ages of 26 and 29 we start to develop our own individual sense of style. By our 40s and 50s we know a distinctive style and right or wrong we tend to stick with it. Clothes are a visual insight to our character and personality. I don't believe the way we dress should reflect how long we have been around, I will always encourage women to embrace change and new style trends. The key to dressing well is to always be aware of the message you want to send out. The golden rule for all age groups is to show skin appropriately and equally important to dress for our individual body shape. As we mature so does our body the way we dressed at 35 may not be as flattering at 55, be receptive to change, revive, recharge and relish the fact you can be age amazing and on trend. Timeless pieces include jeans if you are not a fan of the skinny opt for the very flattering boyfriend jeans. A leather cropped jacket is a classic piece and looks very smart with a nice dress and statement jewellery. Add flair with accessories, shoes, handbags, scarves and belts. For a smart, classy age amazing look avoid the following: Mini skirts, shorts and crop tops. Never wear anything too low, too short or too tight and if you are wearing a low cut top do not pair with a short dress/ skirt and vice versa. In the words of Coco Chanel "style never goes out of fashion"

Writers Group Meetings

In the modern universe of poetry there is a tendency to have no rules, the advantage being it opens the door to all creative thought and removes the barriers that can inhibit the contributions of many introverted and talented writers. This is the great advantage of progress, yet it can be very refreshing and reassuring to come across a new poem written in a traditional style such as our poem this week is from Francis O'Keeffe of the Douglas Writers group. Francis has given us a roundel, a form of verse used in English language poetry devised by Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837–1909), which he derived from the French Rondeau . It makes use of refrains, repeated according to a certain stylized pattern. A roundel consists of three stanzas in nine lines plus a refrain after the third line and after the last line. The refrain must be identical with the beginning of the first line: it may be a half-line, and rhymes with the second line. Writing a roundel is not an easy task, it taxes the brain but it can be fun once the initiation is overcome. Thanks you Francis for restoring my faith in literature! Well done! The Black Ash Bus

Hay Fever Hay fever, also called allergic rhinitis, causes cold-like signs and symptoms such as a runny nose, congestion, sneezing and sinus pressure. But unlike a cold, hay fever isn't caused by a virus. Hay fever is caused by an allergic response to outdoor or indoor allergens, such as pollen, dust mites or pet dander. Hay fever is common — it affects more than 1 in 5 people. Some people have symptoms year-round. For others, hay fever symptoms get worse at certain times of the year, usually in the Broadale spring, summer. Hay fever can make you miserable and affect your performance at work or Maryborough school, and interfere with leisure activities. Symptoms Hill Hay fever symptoms usually start immediately after you're exposed to a specific allergy-causing substance (allergen) and can include: Runny nose and nasal congestion, Watery or itchy eyes, Sneezing, Cough, Itchy nose, roof of mouth or throat, Sinus pressure and facial pain, Swollen, blue-colored skin under the eyes (allergic shiners), Decreased sense of smell or taste. Your hay fever symptoms may start or worsen at a particular time of year, triggered by tree pollen, grasses or weeds, which all bloom at different times. If you're sensitive to indoor allergens, such as dust mites, cockroaches, mold or pet dander, you may have year-round symptoms. Many people have allergy symptoms all year long, but their 021 436 69 23 symptoms get worse during certain times of the year. Causes info@intervene.ie During a process called sensitization, your immune system mistakenly identifies a harmless airborne substance as something harmful. Your immune system then starts producing antibodies to this harmless substance. Treatments and drugs The best hay fever treatment is to avoid the substances that cause your reaction. If your hay fever isn't too severe, over-the-counter medications may be enough to ease your symptoms. For more bothersome symptoms, you may need to take prescription medications. Medications for hay fever include: Nasal corticosteroids, Antihistamines, Decongestants, Cromolyn sodium, Leukotriene modifier, Nasal ipratropium and Oral corticosteroids. Lifestyle and home remedies It's not possible to completely avoid allergens, but you can reduce your symptoms by taking some steps to limit your exposure to them. Lynch TD A+ FOR LOWER SCHOOL COSTS Labour TD Ciarán Lynch has welcomed the publication of Barnardos' School Costs Survey, which shows back to school costs falling at primary and secondary level. "The recent report by Barnardos' shows that progress is being made in getting down the cost for parents of sending their child back to school. Labour in government has moved to deal in particular with two of the major contributing factors - the cost of school books and the cost of uniforms. “In the most recent Budget, €15m was provided to enable primary schools across the country to set up school book rental schemes. All primary schools stand to benefit from this fund, with €6.7m for schools to set up new schemes, and €8.3m for schools that already have existing book schemes. “Lower-income parents will benefit in particular from this funding, as DEIS schools with receive €150 per child towards setting up of book rental schemes, while other schools will receive €100 per child. “In a separate move to tackle the cost of school uniforms, schools have been sent ballot papers in order to survey parents on whether they would prefer the option of generic uniforms, or the wearing of uniforms at all. These surveys would then feed into Boards of Managements' decisions on each school's uniform policy. This is a fair and transparent means of allowing parents have their say on what is another major factor in back to school costs. “I am also encouraged that parents who were previously entitled the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance will automatically qualify for the 2014 payment, and will not have to re-apply. The Allowance is a crucial support for low-income parents towards the cost of school uniforms and shoes, and the Government paid nearly €48m under the scheme in 2013. “Notwithstanding the investment the Government has made in this area, major challenges remain, and I look forward to working with new Minister for Education Jan O'Sullivan in tackling back to school costs for parents.” 1035-1036

Take a Load off Your Spine Who doesn't know how to use a backpack? Load it up and strap it on right? Did you know that a backpack has the potential to alter posture and add stress to your child's still growing spine? The proper purchase and use of a backpack is critical. When you're out looking for a backpack it's important that you find one that fits your child properly. It should not hang down below the waist more than 4 inches. The backpack should have two padded and adjustable shoulder straps and a waist strap to take the majority of the weight on the hips.. Look for symmetrical pockets so that items can be loaded and kept separate and at the same time remain in balance. It is important to distribute the weight evenly. A fully loaded backpack should not exceed 15% of your child's body weight. As the experts on posture, spinal alignment and its effect on your health, let us help you find the best backpack for your child. My suggestion is the “Chiropak” backpack Time for a Physical aka Body NCT? When was the last time you had a physical exam? How about your children? Does your car get an NCT more often than you get your spine checked for subluxations? Take a proactive approach to health; schedule an appointment today. We will examine you to determine how your body is functioning. Special attention will be made to check your spine and nervous system since this is your “master control system.” Not only are we looking for anything currently wrong, we're looking for signs of future ailments and ways to correct them, naturally. Most observe that ours is the most complete examination they've ever had. Chiropractors are trained to notice the signs of potential health problems before they become serious. If we find something abnormal, we'll offer a natural healing solution. Remember, we're here to help you, your family, and your friends live more active, healthy, and happy lives. Let us help you be healthy all year-round! If you ready to start preparing for the upcoming school season and your overdue your “body NCT”, then call us today on(021) 429-2445 and book an

Raffeen Creek Pitch&Putt Notes by Brendan Hayes There was a bit of history as well as low scoring in Navan on Saturday as Raffeen Creek's Charlie Morrissey became the first Cork winner of the Eugene McCarthy Cup in five years after he shot a second round of seven under par to go with an opening round of four under. Congratulations to Charlie All Ireland -16 Champion, also to David Howard who finished forth just two shots behind Charlie. Charlie and Dave were also part of the Cork team who won the Inter County championship from Dublin, all this would not be possible without the help of Raffeen Creeks juvenile coach Donal Field who has donated a lot of his time in the development of the youth section of the club. Dave Ahern is doing very well in the Dutch open at Orvelte was in second place before going to print. Well done to Weeshie Murphy who won the Inter section of the Lavanagh scratch cup at the ESB coarse recently. Other news,Raffeen Creek golf club are in the process of taking over the running of the sports complex in Pfizer we in the Pitch and Putt club wish them every success on this ambitious project and we will assist them in any way possible. SPORT Frankfield Golf Club Frankfield Golf Club capture Carroll Cup The annual Carroll Cup was contested at a warm and dry Frankfield Golf Club on Saturday, resulting in a victory for the host club. The Carroll Cup is competed for by Mahon, Rafeen, Cobh, Fernhill and Frankfield Golf Clubs for members of 18+ handicap and aged 35+ on Jan.1st. The course was excellently presented but, as a result of the prolonged dry summer, the conditions proved extremely challenging for all competitors and local knowledge was a big asset to the hosts, who ran out convincing champions at the end of the competition. Cobh Golf Club will host the competition in 2015 and is eagerly anticipated by the competing clubs, Free Sub Qualifier 30th +31st August. Matchplay Finals on the 30th August start time 1.00p.m.

Cork v Wexford Senior Camogie Replay After the excitement of last Saturday its back to the drawing boards for Cork and Wexford after a injury time goal threw Wexford a life line just when cork looked to have done enough in the Liberty Insurance All Ireland Semi final. It is a huge task ahead of the girls and Cork supporters are urged to make the journey to Walsh Park at 2.30pm on Saturday and get behind our team. We must also get behind our camogie team this Saturday, these girls are putting in huge efforts and are so deserving of support they wear the red and white jersey with pride also so please support them. It’s a short journey from Cork to Waterford just over the road from Youghal and maybe if it a nice day a stop off at the seaside would be in order also, so lets get behind our team, it’s a 2.30pm throw in and clubs and the general 1035-1036 .

Cork South Central Fine Gael TD, Jerry Buttimer, has called for an urgent meeting between newly appointed Minister for Transport, Paschal Donohoe, TD, management at Cork Airport and Cork Airport Development Council. Deputy Buttimer said that the meeting was necessary so that the Minister can be made aware of challenges and opportunities facing Cork Airport. “Cork Airport is the second busiest of the three State Airports and last year welcomed 2.3 million passengers. Because of the important role the airport has in facilitating economic activity it is imperative that the Minister is fully appraised of challenges and opportunities facing Cork Airport. “I have written to the Minister outlining some of the challenges facing the airport. I have also suggested to the Minister that he should meet with the management team at Cork Airport and with the Development Council. This will allow him to hear directly from those involved on a day to day basis and it will give him a detailed understanding of the local situation. “Cork Airport is the gateway to the world for the entire southern region, its success not only benefits Cork, it can help the national economy. We must ensure that the policies being implemented enable Cork Airport to reach its full potential. This will help to attract and maintain businesses in the region and it will help to grow that important tourism sector. “The needs of Cork Airport should be communicated directly to the Minister by those groups who rely on it and by those who manage the facility. It is not in the interests of Cork Airport that the Minister should only hear from Departmental officials and representatives of the wider DAA group. Local meetings with key stakeholders will ensure that the Minister is fully aware of what is required for growth and expansion at Cork Airport.” PAGE 21

This Week’s Teaser Joshua Shrimp had been a sailor for forty years and in that time he had been right around the globe many times. However, he always spent his nights in bed and on dry land. How? PREVIOUS ISSUE’S SOLUTION Brain Teaser Last week’s Teaser: Old Silas Greenfield died and left each of his grandchildren the same bequest. Sam spent all his having a good time. Dave wasted his and Suzy used hers wisely. The old man had been determined to treat the grandchildren equally, and in a way he did, but each got a different sum of money. How? Last Week’s Answer: The old man had given them time. He left each of them the equivalent of their annual salary so that they could have a year to do what they liked.
