Orthopedic Chiropractic Care for Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain HOW ARE YOU FEELING? Are you living with chronic musculoskeletal pain caused by degeneration or 'wear and tear' of your joints? Do your legs or arms feel heavy and do you have difficulty walking or carrying bags? Perhaps you have shoulder discomfort and restricted movement, or been diagnosed with a 'frozen shoulder?' Do you have difficulty blow-drying your hair or reaching up? Is the nagging pain getting you down? Do you get frequent headaches and perhaps neck pain and stiffness? Can you wake up with neck pain? HOW WE CAN HELP YOU? We have devised a unique treatment combining the gentlest of chiropractic manipulation to move joints and bones that are irritating your nerve endings causing the pain receptors to fire up. This 'soft' chiropractic doesn't stress the ligament attachment of multiple bones, especially in the spine, and so it is possible to move individual vertebrae rather than block segments. This allows your spine to rebalance more naturally without excessive force or rotation of the joints. Tendon attaches to muscle which connects to bone. And so, both muscles and bones must work in tandem to allow unrestricted movement. Therefore, combined with 'soft' chiropractic, we also use a unique set of orthopaedic therapy skills devised from training in neuromuscular techniques, physical therapy, osteopathic and a skill set that comes with over 10 years of experience in soft tissue, manual palpation and musculoskeletal diagnostic skills. YOUR PRACTITIONER Dr Joanna Daly DC is a General Chiropractic Council registered chiropractor and a Licentiate of the Royal College of Chiropractors, who is trained in Physical Therapy, Neuromuscular and Osteopathic techniques. THE CLINIC At present, we operate from very comfortable premises at the 'Health and Wellbeing Centre' in the beautiful town of Kinsale, where we are able to offer a very unique service that is personally tailored to your specific needs, based on assessment and diagnosis of your condition. Whilst at our clinic, your treatment time is solely dedicated to you – we never leave you alone in a room. If we have treated you before in the Douglas area, home visits are available. So you can enjoy all of the benefits of the same treatment but in the comfort of your own home (only available to past patients or new patient referrals).

COST OF TREATMENTS Orthopaedic Chiropractic - 45 minutes €50 Credit/Debit Cards accepted. Call: 021 4772445 - Dr Joanna Daly D.C., MChiro, LRCC, MCAI, UCA, NMT, BSc (Hons) Kinsale Health & Wellbeing Centre, Emmet Place, Kinsale, Co. Cork. www.kinsalechiropractic.com

Life as a Vet Student ~ Being a Final Year Veterinary Student ~ Aisling O’Keeffe Ever since I was little I've loved animals, but more importantly perhaps, I've also had an interest in 'fixing' sick animals. I was always bringing home sick birds and rabbits, feeding stray cats etc. With the points for veterinary in the leaving certificate being so high, it always seemed a bit unattainable to me, I never thought I'd actually get it. When I got offered veterinary medicine in the CAO I was over the moon, I triple checked it before I told anyone just to make sure. I always remember what my guidance teacher said to me after I got into veterinary, A veterinary degree can take you so many places and can give you so many opportunities. The traditional image of a vet, is of course treating small or large animals, but you can also go into the department, research, zoo animals, exotics, specialisation etc. The field of veterinary is very large, therefore the scope of what you can do is too.  I had a few preconceived ideas before I started vet school; would everyone be really competitive? Would the study schedule be hectic? Do you have to fend for yourself? When I started lectures however, everyone was really nice and friendly. The lecturers offer all the help they can and are always there to talk to you if you are having difficulties with something. Of course, studying is a major part of the course. Looking back now, I didn't do half as much studying for my leaving cert compared to what I did and do in vet school but the difference is that veterinary is what I decided to do and what I decided to commit to and study for and that makes a huge difference. No one really enjoys studying all the time, but when you enjoy the course material and find it really interesting then it's a lot easier to sit down and study it. Veterinary made me grow up very quickly, not alone did I have to move away from home, but in comparison to secondary school, I now had sole responsibility for my study and work, no one will spoon feed you in college, your work will show through your results and assessments. Being a vet student requires a lot of hard work, determination and motivation. You have to keep your end goal in sight, which is in 5 years time having your dream job as a vet. Being in final year now, that goal is getting quite close for me. People keep saying to me "Wow, five years in college, you must be sick of it by now" but it's actually the opposite. Final year is spent in the veterinary hospital in UCD and is very practical and hands on. Through all the work experience I've done, I know that I love the practical aspect of veterinary so I'm really looking forward to spending a year in the vet hospital. All going well, I'll qualify in June 2015as a veterinarian. A few years after being in practice, I hope to get a further qualification either in small animal surgery or neurology.  Four years of study later, if I could go back I'd still do the same thing all over again. To be a vet student is a privilege and to be a vet that can help animals and make a difference, and to have people trust you with their pets is even more so. Veterinary is what I study, but it's also my hobby and what I love, and to be able to work in something that I feel that passionate about, makes me feel quite lucky.

Christy is not in the best of health at the moment and is currently being cared for in a nursing home, but he has written a lovely poem for us. Get well soon Christy and please, please write lots and lots of poems. Friends Written with a pen, sealed with a kiss If you are my friend, please answer me this Are we friends or not? You told me once, but i forgot So tell me now, and tell me true So i can say "I'm here for you" Of all the friends I've ever met You're the one I won't forget And if i die before you do I'll go to heaven and wait for you I'll give the angels back their wings And risk the loss of everything There isn't a thing I wouldn't do To have a friend just like you. Cork Deputy Lord Mayor Cllr. Nicholas O’Keeffe with Pete Duffy and his new DVD Children of Mother Jones

“Children of Mother Jones” A new song on Cork's rebel daughter, trade union leader Mother Jones has been launched at City Hall by Deputy Lord Mayor, Cllr. Nicholas O'Keeffe. “Children of Mother Jones” by musician Pete Duffy tells the story of the Cork born woman who exposed child labour in the mines and mills of America. Born in Shandon in 1837 and baptised in the North Cathedral that August, Mary Harris left for America where she married union organisor George Jones. She later lost her husband and four children to an outbreak of yellow fever. She then became an organisor for the mine workers and fought against child labour. Deputy Lord Mayor O'Keeffe, launching the new song, said the upcoming Spirit of Mother Jones festival will further enhance the radical reputation of Cork's rebel daughter. “Her pioneering trade unionism is today an inspiration to many people who continue to strive to improve conditions for workers across the world.” Cllr. O'Keeffe also paid tribute to Pete Duffy for the new song and to the organisors of the festival for highlighting Cork's role in world trade unionism. Send your poem to 'The Poetry Corner' /Douglas Post, Unit 29C, St Patrick's Mills, Douglas or you can email it direct to ronniemcginn@eircom.net. If possible keep your poem to 20 lines. You may choose any subject you like, in any form you like as long as it's original. We look forward to hearing from you. RonnieMcGinn

Insect Bites and Stings Signs and symptoms of an insect bite result from the injection of venom or other substances into your skin. The venom sometimes triggers an allergic reaction. With Phil Goodman Ireland is like many other developed countries, facing serious challenges within the economy, system. The current health status of people living in Ireland and their lifestyle trends are leading toward a costly and unhealthy future. Health means everyone achieving his or her potential to enjoy complete physical, mental and social well-being. Healthy people contribute to the health and quality of the society in which they and play. Health is much more than the absence of disease or disability; it is an essential resource for everyday life, and an asset for human development. People living in Ireland are now living longer than ever before, but not all are living these longer lives in good health. By 2020 type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease is expected to rise by 20 to 30%. Also by 2020 the number of adults with chronic diseases will increase by around 40% with most of the conditions affecting those in the older groups. Health Ireland was recently launched, Headed up by Keith Wood, former Irish rugby player. The team is guided by the aims of Healthy Ireland. I am delighted to be part of the team, of which there are 38 members from around the country. I look forward to working with others to improve the health and well-being of our older people, where well-being is valued and supported at every level of society and is everyone's responsibility. Our outing to the Galway Bay Hotel for a few days was terrific. We paid a visit to the stunningly beautiful Kylemore Abbey and took a cruise on Loch Corrib, all enjoyed in glorious sunshine. Last week our trip was to Sherkin Island, a peaceful and unique place. This week we go for a cruise on the lakes of Killarney, next week we go to Kenmare Bay Hotel for a few nights and do the Beara peninsula and visit Garnish and enjoy the scenery in that beautiful part of the world. If we were guaranteed good weather in Ireland I am sure most people would stay at home. We have the best food, scenery and people. Know Your Rights: Lost Passports Question I am going abroad for the first time. What should I do if I lose my passport while I am travelling? Answer If you are an Irish citizen currently living abroad, travelling or on holiday abroad and your Irish passport is lost, stolen or misplaced, you must contact your nearest Irish embassy or consulate immediately. You will be asked to confirm the loss in writing or, if you are applying for a new passport, to include the details in your passport application. You must also get in touch with the local police and report the loss of your passport. You should request a written statement that you have reported the loss of your passport to them. A member of the police authority in the country in which you are staying must witness this statement. You will need this statement to get an Emergency Travel Certificate (valid for one journey) or an Emergency Passport (valid for a restricted amount of time) from an Irish embassy or consulate. If you are travelling on a multi-stop journey, where you will pass through more than one jurisdiction, you will need a new Irish passport. Again, you must report the loss of your passport immediately to your nearest Irish embassy or consulate. If there is no Irish embassy or consulate in the country where you are, contact the embassy of another EU member state. It will get in touch with the nearest Irish embassy on your behalf. An embassy of another EU member state cannot issue you with a new Irish passport, but can issue an Emergency Travel Document. It may be useful to carry a photocopy of the personal data page of your passport with you when travelling or scan an image of that page and email it to yourself. Any passport reported as lost or stolen is no longer a valid travel document and you should not try to travel on a passport which has been reported as lost or stolen. Further information is available from the Citizens Information Centre below. Know Your Rights has been compiled by Blackrock Citizens Information Service which provides a free and confidential service to the public. Tel:0761 076930 Address: Convent Road, Blackrock, Cork. Gardening Things to do this week

As usual we try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week. Flower Garden Lift and divide bearded irises once they have finished flowering. Remove any dormant sections from the centre of the clump, and replant the fresh new shoots. Finish planting out summer bedding plants in borders, baskets and containers. Fill gaps with large argyranthemums, fuchsias or pelargoniums. Remove faded flowers on perennials such as lupins and delphiniums. Early pruning often encourages a second flush of flowers late in the season. Cut the flower-spike down to just above a new shoot or leaf, and give each plant a generous liquid feed to encourage fresh growth. Remove the seedheads from aquilegia to prevent them from spreading.

on rooted cuttings of pelargoniums, argyranthemums, fuchsias and other plants as soon as the roots have filled their pots. Take cuttings from the non-flowering shoots of shrubs and climbers. In General Some trees and shrubs have a habit of producing unwanted shoots from their base, or from the stems of those trained as standards. These can regularly be seen growing around rowan trees, sumach and older fruit trees. Cut them cleanly away with secateurs to prevent them sapping strength from the plant. Cut out plain green shoots growing on variegated shrubs to prevent them spoiling the appearance of your shrubs.

Kitchen Garden The following vegetable crops can be sown directly outside: lettuce and salad leaves, radishes, kohl rabi, spring cabbage and endive, plus dwarf French beans for a late crop. Winter spinach can be sown from July to September. Never let onions go short of water or their yield will be severely reduced. Water plants thoroughly once or twice a week if conditions are dry, and keep down weed competition by hand or using a hoe. Sideshoots on cordon gooseberries and currants should be pruned back to about five leaves or 10cm (4in) long. The natural drop will thin out a heavy fruit crop to some degree, but it is worth lending a hand. Pick off any small, damaged or diseased fruits to leave those remaining spaced 10cm (4in) apart. Lawns Mow it at least once a week, twice if possible, and finish by cutting the edges neatly. Feed lawns, if this hasn't been done already, and treat any weeds and moss. The clippings can usually be mixed into the compost heap, but remember to discard them for the first few mowings after applying weedkillers.

PAGE 16

Greenhouse Never let crops in growing bags go short of water. Standing the bags on gravel trays or on reservoirs with wicks through the base can prevent drying out. Biological pest control can be used at this time of year against whitefly and red spider mite. Pot

The process has already commenced and Council has allocated €250,000 for 2014 to initiate the process. This will be used for public realm improvements and for measures to address run-down and vacant buildings. A 5 year Action Plan will be prepared to guide the longer term implementation of the Strategy.
