"How to Find Love on the InternetThe Science of Internet Dating" The Science of Online Dating Dr Martin Graff Sheds Light On The Intricacies Of Online Romance. Friday 2 May, 8:00pm at Blackrock Castle Observatory Are there gender differences in attraction? Can you really find true love on the Internet? How do people actually portray themselves online? Can you have a virtual affair? In this talk, Dr Martin Graff will examine all of these issues and will draw on current empirical studies on online relationships. He will cover some of the major research work on the online disinhibition effect, which suggest that we disclose more personal information, and do this more quickly in online environments. Dr Graff will also give some factual advice on how to construct dating site profiles, and the way to approach an online liaison with a potential dating partner. With the explosion in the provision of online dating sites, including those dedicated to finding partners for affairs, this will also draw on some of the speaker's own research on online infidelity, asking whether it is possible to have a virtual affair. There will be plenty of time for questions and answers, and all are welcome at this free event. We hope to see you there! Ronnie McGinn’s Poetry Corner It was with deep regret we learned last week of the sudden death of Noel O' Callaghan a popular member of the Douglas Writers Group. Noel a devout family man was also a well known trade unionist and a political activist who was one of the men involved in the final days of Irish Steel. A proud Corkman, he was the elected safety officer at the plant and served on many committees concerned with trade union issues. Before joining Irish Steel Noel had a variety of occupations, from an apprentice at an undertaker's in the city, to cleaning the Control Tower at Cork Airport. In fact it was a pleasure to hear Noel recall his days in the labour force but it was his work with the Health and Safety Acts in Irish Steel that sparked his deep interest in social issues. His was a voice for the worker, for the ordinary person against the faceless bureaucracy of so many organisations today. In his retirement he found a new way of expressing his opinions through the Douglas Writers group where he took part in many public readings. His last appearance was at the Life Long Learning event in the Douglas Library two weeks ago where he read his topical poem on the issue of the Garda whistle-blowers from his book “Frankly Speaking.” His frankly speaking will be sorely missed. To his wife and family we offer our deepest sympathy. May he Rest in Peace. Integrity There are two Garda whistleblowers Who did their duty Exposed their colleagues wrongdoing In the face of adversity They and their families have Been harassed and victimised And by the utterances of The Garda commissioner were vilified For standing by the principle To thine own self be true That you lead by example By what you do It's up to us citizens To outlaw this impropriety Of nepotism and cronyism Ingrained in our society We then will have openness Transparency and accountability And a productive prosperous Country of equality Noel G Callaghan

Douglas Community Park Just to remind newcomers to the area, that Douglas Community Park is a 5-acre park which is on lease to Douglas Community Association from Cork County Council. It is a wonderful place for the people of Douglas to enjoy and stretches from Church Road on the south side, to St. Columba's Terrace (where Tesco Shopping Centre is located) on the north side. There are many amenities available, for example a jogging path of half a kilometre winds around the park, there is a state-of-the-art playground for children up to 13 years, beautiful mature trees to admire and give shelter, and several benches for people to sit and read or just rest and watch the world go by. Cork County Council have plans to provide a kick-about area for youth, to widen the jogging path to include a cycle path, and to put in exercise equipment. The centre is used by many groups throughout the day, including Uni-slim, dance and drama groups, language classes, etc. There is some disruption to the public at the moment for which we apologise, due to the extension taking place at the centre. Date for your Diary! Garden Party at Underwood, Rochestown, on Saturday May 24th If you didn't make the Garden Party last year, now is your chance to put it in your diary. It will be held at the home of John and Helen Fox at Underwood, Rochestown, (from 11 a.m.) where local band Ré Nua will be playing their wonderful repertoire from 2.30 to 5 p.m. You can enjoy a cuppa and cookies and hopefully, some May sunshine, and meet your friends! All proceeds will go to our Building Fund. There is a car park nearby at the Hop Island railway walk within a short walking distance. Community Welfare Officer The hours and days that the Community Welfare Officer attends at the community centre are currently every Wednesday and Thursday morning from 9.30-1. Meals & Wheels Building Fund, Church Collections Thanks to the mass goers at St. Patrick's, Rochestown, Rochestown Monastery and the Church of the Incarnation, Grange-Frankfield who contributed very generously to our recent collection. There's lots to do to get window boxes planted up, green verges tidied, bushes trimmed and multiple other jobs so please show up and join this great crew of civic-minded people who care about how our neighbourhood looks. It gives us all a lift to see the result!

Young At Heart with Phil Goodman Summer is here and we look forward to the bright days and the balmy evenings, basking in sunshine (I live in hope). We all need that vital vitamin D, which we get from the sun, and it helps boost our immune system. This time of year we need to be extra vigilant of bogus callers, putting pressure on elderly and vulnerable people to part with large sums of money for proposed work on their house. There are of course many honourable people carrying work for people, but sadly there is the other type too. The trip to Amsterdam, Antwerp, Ypres and Brussels was enjoyed by all. We went to the Island of Ireland Peace Park, a memorial for Irish and Ulster Irish who died in World War 1. The 35 metre tower was built with bricks from Ireland. There are also record books with names of the dead. We saw the Menom Gates, built by the British Commonwealth. Every evening they perform a full ceremony here and play the last post in memory of the soldiers killed in World War 1. We visited Our Ladies Gothic Cathedral, famous for its Rubens paintings. We had a tour of the European Parliament, which was very informative, and enjoyed lunch hosted by M.E.P Brian Crowley. Congrats to Aidan O Dwyer and Maura Deasy who won the dance competition, Kathleen Swanick who won the Easter bonnet competition and Maureen Philpot and Tom Deasy who won the community quiz. Our next trip to Dublin is to Board Gais Theatre to see “Singing In The Rain” on the 27th of May. We stay over night and on the 28th we visit Glasnevin Cemetery where Daniel O Connell, Michael Collins, Eamon DeValera and many others are buried. We will also visit the botanic gardens. We wish Declan Foley all the best on Sunday the 27th in City Hall. Contact me for tickets at 4363867. We need your support for the fund raising table quiz for Deirdre O Reilly on May the 9th at 8.30. Dee suffered a massive, life altering stroke on December 22nd. She spent 3 months in CUH, and is now undergoing intensive therapy at the national rehab hospital in Dublin. Dee is the mother of two young children and was a friend herself to many, tirelessly raising funds for many charities...Marymount, Simon etc. Funds are needed to modify her house and get her home to her two little girls. Tai-Chi, Painting, Knitting, computers, bingo, indoor bowls all finish in May until August. We start our weekly day trips with a visit to Griffins garden centre on Wednesday the 14th of May. On Wednesday the 30th of April at 10 am in Douglas G.A.A hall, Arena McSweeney will give a health presentation talk on Cardio vascular health and nutrition. You must book this screening beforehand. We extend our sincere sympathy to Theresa Hanover and family on the passing of Frank, much loved husband and father. ISSUE#1017-1018

Ulcerative Colitis

Ulcerative colitis, an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that causes chronic inflammation of the digestive tract, is characterized by abdominal pain and diarrhea. Ulcerative colitis usually affects only the innermost lining of your large intestine (colon) and rectum. It occurs only through continuous stretches of your colon, unlike Crohn's disease, which occurs in patches anywhere in the digestive tract and often spreads deep Broadale into the layers of affected tissues. Symptoms: Ulcerative colitis symptoms can vary, depending on the severity of inflammation and Maryborough where it occurs. For these reasons, doctors often classify ulcerative colitis according to its location. Hill Causes: Like Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis causes inflammation and ulcers in your intestine. But unlike Crohn's, which can affect the colon in various sections, ulcerative colitis usually affects one continuous section of the inner lining of the colon beginning with the rectum. No one is quite sure what triggers ulcerative colitis, but there's a consensus as to what doesn't. Researchers no longer believe that stress is the main culprit, although stress can often aggravate symptoms. Instead, current thinking focuses on the following possibilities: 1. Immune system. Some scientists think a virus or bacterium may trigger ulcerative colitis. 021 436 69 23 The digestive tract becomes inflamed when your immune system tries to fight off the invading microorganism (pathogen). It's also possible that inflammation may stem from an autoimmune info@intervene.ie reaction in which your body mounts an immune response even though no pathogen is present. 2. Heredity. Because you're more likely to develop ulcerative colitis if you have a parent or sibling with the disease, scientists suspect that genetic makeup may play a contributing role. Treatments and drugs: The goal of medical treatment is to reduce the inflammation that triggers your signs and symptoms. In the best cases, this may lead not only to symptom relief but also to long-term remission. Ulcerative colitis treatment usually involves either drug therapy or surgery. Doctors use several categories of drugs that control inflammation in different ways. But drugs that work well for some people may not work for others, so it may take time to find a medication that helps you. In addition, because some drugs have serious side effects, you'll need to weigh the benefits and risks of any treatment. Lifestyle and home remedies: Sometimes you may feel helpless when facing ulcerative colitis. But changes in your diet and lifestyle may help control your symptoms and lengthen the time between flare-ups. Diet: There's no firm evidence that what you eat causes inflammatory bowel disease. But certain foods and beverages can aggravate your symptoms, especially during a flare-up in your condition. It's a good idea to try eliminating from your diet anything that seems to make your signs and symptoms worse. Stress: Although stress doesn't cause inflammatory bowel disease, it can make your signs and symptoms much worse and may trigger flare-ups. Stressful events can range from minor annoyances to a move, job loss or the death of a loved one. When you're stressed, your normal digestive process can change, causing your stomach to empty more slowly and secrete more acids. Stress can also speed or slow the passage of intestinal contents. It may also cause changes in intestinal tissue itself. Although it's not always possible to avoid stress, you can learn ways to help manage it. For more information on managing and treating ulcerative colitis contact Garvan at Lynch's Pharmacy on 4366923.

Is it too late for me to register to vote in the local elections next month? Answer You can still be added to the register for the local and European elections which will be held on Friday 23 May 2014. The Register of Electors is published every year on 1 February but the closing date for submitting changes to the last draft Register was November 25 –before you moved to your new address. The legislation will put the Children First Guidelines on a statutory footing. “Today is a landmark day for child protection in Ireland, with the publication of the Children First Bill 2014. The commitment to publish this legislation is a key feature of the Program for Government, as well as being a recommendation of the 2009 Ryan Report Implementation Plan. “From day one this Government proved it takes the matter of child protection very seriously with the appointment of the first ever Cabinet Minister for Children, my colleague Frances Fitzgerald TD. I commend Minister Fitzgerald for living up to her responsibilities in this area; this is the first time that key elements of Children First Guidelines will be put on a statutory footing since they were first published in 1999. “The Children First Bill is crucially important in ensuring best practise in child welfare and child protection. The Bill will ensure there is an explicit requirement on mandated persons to report child protection concerns to the Child and Family Agency (Tusla) including among others: medical practitioners; registered nurses; teachers; social workers; Gardaí; psychologists; members of the clergy; pre-school child care staff ; child protection officers of religious, sporting; cultural, recreational and educational organisations offering services to children.“The Bill also forms part of a suite of child protection legislation which already includes the Criminal Justice (Withholding of Information on Offences against Children and Vulnerable Persons) Act 2012 and the National Vetting Bureau (Children and Vulnerable Persons) Act 2012. “The Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children, of which I am Chair, will be actively involved in the passage of this legislation. We will be examining the Bill in detail when it reaches Committee stage. I look forward to working closely with Minister Fitzgerald in bringing about this positive new initiative for the protection of children in Ireland.” ISSUE#1017-1018

FASHION MONOCHROME MAGIC Black and white is more popular than ever, with leading designers including Chanel, Givenchy and Marc Jacobs once again showcasing some stunning SS2014 collections based on the timeless trend. With some clever investment in key pieces, your wardrobe will take you straight from Spring/Summer to Autumn/Winter. Also remember to combine items already in your wardrobe with new purchases to create a number of new looks.

GETTING THE LOOK The basics include a white or black jacket, white trousers, white skirt and a couple of white tops or embellished shirts to add texture. The customary summer jeans in black or white are another perfect item for mixing and matching in a monochrome wardrobe.

THE WHITE-OUT Dressing head to toe in white is a huge trend. Wear a white jacket and white trousers with a white lycra stretch tee-shirt or a frilled blouse. Add a pop of colour from the seasons pastel palette with flat Oxford shoes or sandals and a simple neck piece. Bring the outfit from day to night with a gold or silver statement neck piece, a glitzy clutch and killer heels. To totally change the look simply swop the trousers for a skirt using the same accessories.

WHITE ON WHITE Very similar to the above but using different textures to enhance form and shape. Perhaps a soft long sleeved knit top over white trousers or a lace shirt tucked inside a cotton skirt for a polished look.

MONOCHROME Achieve this look by introducing some black staples already in your wardrobe. For an effortlessly chic look opt for colour-blocking. Wear the standard little black dress with a plain white jacket. For daytime keep accessories simple, wearing a white neck piece on a white dress or vice versa with the black. For evening transform with a flash of bold colour in the form of a large red clutch and red heels for a modern twist on the monochrome trend.

The Late Frank Hanover Sr. The Late Frank Hanover Sr was a gentle gracious man with a warm sincere smile, well read and articulate, we found him to be a very interesting man to listen and talk to, someone who could understand and appreciate your personal point of view. He was probably always first into The Douglas Village Shopping Centre looking for the latest copy of the Douglas Post and if it wasn’t there he’d call to our office inquiring about the delay. We miss him and we miss his encouraging enthusiasm , the management and staff of the Douglas Post would like the offer our sincere sympathies to his wife Theresa and to the entire Hanover family. Lynch TD TRAIN AIRLINE STAFF TO SPOT HUMAN TRAFFICKING

Labour TD Ciarán Lynch has said that airlines must play their part in tackling human trafficking, by providing their staff with training to enable them to identify its victims.“In a reply to a Parliamentary Question I tabled, Minister for Justice, Alan Shatter, informed me that the Irish and UK governments have put together a training resource for airline staff on identifying evidence that a passenger is a victim of human trafficking.“Airlines are on the frontline of the effort to tackle this heinous crime. I am urging Irish airlines in particular to play their part, by using the online resources that the Department has provided. “The Department's dedicated anti-human trafficking website, blueblindfold.gov.ie, offers information on human trafficking and provides an email address and freephone number to enable reporting suspicions of human trafficking. Passengers too can play their part, by being on the lookout for evidence that a fellow passenger is a victim of trafficking.“The Minster also informed me that an updated National Action Plan on combating Human Trafficking is in the pipeline, and is being currently drafted. This will reinforce the government's current efforts." Cllr Ciarán Lynch meeting with the Douglas Young at Heart Group at Leinster House

My Plan to dramatically improve the condition of Roads and Footpaths The condition of many roads and footpaths in the Douglas area leaves a lot to be desired. I believe that the condition of roads and footpaths can be dramatically improved by taking the following 3 steps: 1.Tackling the excessive amount of health and safety regulations – While health and safety in the workplace is very important, Cork County Council's interpretation of the health and safety regulations ensure that Council workers have to abide by much higher health and safety standards than private contractors do. Cork County Council's interpretation of health and safety regulations has made the repair of roads and footpaths less efficient and more expensive and has resulted in millions of euro of taxpayers' money being wasted every year. The solution to this problem is for Cork County Council to apply health and safety standards which are on a par with those used by private contractors. 2.Lifting the recruitment embargo on employing Council workers - The embargo on recruiting Council staff has led to a dramatic decline in the number of Council workers. If the recruitment embargo on outdoor road maintenance staff was lifted, the Council would be able to employ more Council workers to repair and maintain roads and footpaths. 3.Employing more private contractors - The employment of private contractors would be a fast, efficient and cost effective way of repairing and maintaining roads and footpaths. It would be fast because private contractors would want to get the job finished as soon as possible so that they could move on to their next job. It would be cost effective because if a private contractor's tender is too high he would not get the job. It would be efficient because if a private contractor did not do the job properly he would not be employed by the Council again.

For appointment / Consultation:

I believe that if these steps are taken it will ensure that roads and footpaths are repaired and maintained in a much more efficient, timely and cost effective manner.

INDEPENDENT INDEPENDENT

BUSINESS OWNERS NEED CLARIFICATION ON PAY PARKING Independent councillor David Boyle calls for clarification on Fine Gael's position on pay parking in Douglas. The controversial pay parking regime has been introduced 2 years ago amid much controversy. It was intended to free up parking in the village but instead has lead to much negative publicity. In the first year of operation of the pay parking regime nearly 3,500 tickets were handed out. Even so, the on street parking system lost nearly €30,000 in revenue. Last week saw a new FG candidate in the election call for 1 hour free parking to be introduced. This comes a number of weeks after FG shot down the process of introducing 1 hour free parking in the village. The vote was lost 18-17. Cllr Boyle says, “As someone who has campaigned to have the bye laws in Douglas changed The Douglas Post Designed & Created by for the 2 years, I find it incredible that a Fine Gael candidate has stated that he wishes to have the bye laws amended. Fine Gael have rejected all attempts at amending the bye laws in Douglas. They have refused to Unit 29e Saint Patrick Woollen Mills, Douglas, Cork. listen to the concerns of the businesses in Douglas. They have rejected their claims that pay parking is having a negative effect on the area. They have sided with Cork County Council management at every opportunity against these businesses owners. The vote to amend the bye laws was recently lost 18-17 with all Fine Gael members voting to reject a public consultation. All elected Fine Gael members will follow the party whip and continue to put the interests of Cork County Council management over the interests of ordinary businesses owners. I am calling on all Fine Gael candidates to clarify their position on this".

Gardening The change in the weather last weekend might not agree with Things to do everyone. But every wind that this week blows brings something good to somebody. Even ill winds of mischance and calamity – often carry as they go, the seeds of Providence, so that out of trouble comes some happy consequence. We'll try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week. Flower Garden Continue sowing hardy annuals wherever there is a need for colour; Sow extra in spare ground for cutting. Mulch lilies outdoors with compost, and feed those growing in pots. Watch out for black fly on philadelphus, elders and other shrubs, and spray. Kitchen Garden Tuck straw or special mats around strawberry plants to keep the fruit clean; do this before plants begin to sprawl. Remove grease bands from fruit trees and burn. Cut asparagus spears regularly, but not from new plants. Remove flowers from perpetual strawberries for heavier crops later in the year. Sow kolh-rabi little and often, and every 3-4 weeks for young tender crops. Support peas before they make their first tendrils. Erect supports for runner and climbing French beans. Thin out autumn rasberry canes to 10cm(4in) apart, and tie in as they grow. Lawns & Hedges Continue mowing, twice weekly, for a fine finish if the grass is growing vigorously. Greenhouse Remove greenhouse insulation; apply a light speckle of shading to the glass. Start feeding early tomatoes and continue removing sides-hoots. Sow runner and climbing French beans in pots for planting out in 3-4 weeks time. Sow surplus half-hardy annuals for greenhouse pot-plants. Continue pricking out bedding and move older seedlings to the cold frame to harden off. Keep newspapers handy in case of sudden night frosts. Plant tomatoes in unheated greenhouse if not already done. PAGE 24

Water Garden Watch out for pondweed starting to multiply in a warm season. In General In dry weather spray new conifers and evergreens with water or an anti-desiccant. Keep all new shrubs trees and fruit well-watered in a dry season, and remove weeds to reduce competition. Treat fence panels and supports with timber preservative. When spraying fruit and other plants in flower, do so in the evening when pollinating insects are not about.

Fota Wildlife Park Pick Names for Baby Giraffes “After over 1,000 suggestions in 3 weeks, Fota Wildlife Park have picked the names Aideen and Fáda for their two Giraffe Calves. The names were chosen for their meaning by the wardens at the Cork Attraction from the hundreds of suggestions that came from families and schools. “We chose Aideen for the female calf as it means little fire which suits her personality, whilst Fáda was chosen for the male to represent the long neck giraffes have” added Stephen Ryan head of marketing for Fota Wildlife Park. The first born was Aideen on January 25th to mother Bláithín and father Walder, two days later Fáda was born to mother Sapphire and father Tadgh. The calves now become the youngest of a herd of Rothschild giraffe at Fota Wildlife Park, which are one of nine races of giraffe found in Africa. The winning names were chosen by Caroline Dalton from Cork who was the only person to pick Aideen, whilst Fáda was a popular choice with it being suggested 10 times for its meaning long. Gurrane National School Junior Infants were randomly picked and get the prize of a class tour to see the calf up close at Fota Wildlife Park.

Speed Limit Review in September In my view, there are many examples of inappropriate speed limits on our local roads. Last year the Government set up a national Speed Limit Review Body which issued its report in November. This report was extremely disappointing with few recommendations of any significance. One of the key issues the Review Body examined was the default 80 km/h speed limit on local and minor roads. This speed limit applies in the absence of a specifically set speed limit and unfortunately it exists on a number of very minor roads The national report essentially fudged this issue and simply recommended changing the 80 km/h signage with signage of a different colour. This is a complete waste of resources and a meaningless exercise. Given the Review Body's failure to address this issue, I sought clarity at the recent Full Council meeting as to when proposals will be accepted by the County Council for speed limit changes. The response to my motion stated that the Council will be undertaking a comprehensive speed limit review in September coming. This is an important process and will give members of the public the opportunity to make submissions proposing speed limit changes. This can mean proposals to increase or decrease existing speed limits and will provide an opportunity to address the 80 km/h limit on some very minor roads. If you would like to share your views on this issue, please do not hesitate to contact me.

LAST WEEK’s CROSSWORD ANSWER’s

“The little Scottish island of Moray boasts the grandly titled “Bridge over the Atlantic” (The locals gloss over the fact that, at this point the Atlantic is only a few feet wide). The bridge is only single track and every morning McLeod the postman drives his van at breakneck speed over the bridge and onto the island. However, every morning the local milkman drives his van at similar speed across the bridge as he leaves the island. Neither could ever bring himself to give way, so why is there never an accident? DIGITAL PROJECTION IN ALL SCREENS

“The parish clerk of a West Cork town received a small parcel from Germany addressed to Mr. Alfred White, she checked the telephone directory but could find no one listed under that name. However, when she inquired at the local pub she was told by some of the town's old timers that there had been an Alfred White and that after World War 2 , he had married a German and settled in Frankfurt. What was in the parcel?” Last Week's Answer. Mr White was , or at least his ashes. His last request was that his remains be interred in the local cemetery. The German authorities did not know who to address the urn to and so came up with a rather strange solution to their dilemma. PAGE 31
