Ireland God Help Us! Dear Editor, God bless poor Ireland. Today I received my payslip for my HSE Pension. I worked as a Home Help for a few years and am now 72. I am in receipt of a “Pension” of 92 cents per fortnight! Every two weeks I receive an official payslip (54c), in an envelope with a 55 cent stamp. Today I got the surprise of my life to find I am now in the Tax Bracket! 18cents tax has been deducted from the 92cents and I am also paying the Universal Social Charge at the rate of 2cents!! What kind of bloody tomfoolery is this? I have written to the Minister for Health and told him to look into it. He’s getting paid enough! We have vat on toilet rolls now at 23% - it won’t be too long till we are back to cutting the newspapers up in squares with the auld piece of string, and the old rain barrel outside the back door. ‘Tis backwards we are going. If it keeps like this, we’ll soon be back to the auld ass and cart!! Petrol will be too dear along with road tax and insurance hikes. We have the Troika, the Banks, the Croke Park agreement and I’m sure my 2 cents USC isn’t going to make much of a difference all that. Ireland God help us ! Give us a break, Enda! Bantry Reader. Cork bridges to undergo repair works Cork South Central TD Jerry Buttimer has welcomed €100 million worth of funding which will be provided for the funding of new, small scale, road safety and upgrading projects. Deputy Buttimer said “despite reduced resources the Minister he is targeting available resources to deliver much needed upgrading works. In Cork these works will include renewal and repair works to bridges. Already work has taken place on the Brian Boru Bridge and work has commenced on the Hibernian Road footbridge. It is also intended that repair works will be carried out on the Christy Ring Bridge, Togher Road Underpass and Mahon Interchange bridge among others across the city. “I understand that the City Council will be advised by the NRA during the course of next week the exact amount of each individual allocation. Grants for regional and local roads will be announced towards the end of this month. “These works are in addition to the on-going major NRA scheme to upgrade the interchanges on the N25 at the Bandon and Sarsfield Road roundabouts. This scheme is one of only six major projects nationally which was commenced in 2011.”

Said my granny to me as she jabbed her bony finger into my chest. I was a little confused and replied, “Noone.” Then why are you wearing it?” I was seventeen and going through my Bob Dylan phase. I was the coolest in black suede boots, black jeans, black polo neck jumper and the piece de resistance, a dark tan suede jacket that I had bought for £12 at a second hand clothing stall in the English Market. This was the item of clothing that she objected to. I merely shrugged at her lack of taste and moved on. Sometimes, when we would ask our father for to do something for us, he would reply, “You’re big enough and ugly enough to do it yourself.” When I use this line on my boys, they get very offended. Children are so sensitive these days. I was coming out of Douglas Park when I came across a boy of about 10 years with a younger child, a girl, in a headlock. As I passed them, he flung her to the ground. I barked at him, “You shouldn’t treat little girls like that.” He sneered back at me and said, “She’s my sister!” I told him that if I ever met his mother,

I would report him. Half an hour later, I met the boy again with his father. They were out looking for me. The father was more upset about the way I spoke to his son, which I admitted was a bit harsh, than the fact that his daughter was being strangled on the street. It ended amicably. The next day, I was in Roche’s Stores coffee shop. Three tables away, a toddler was standing on top of a table with not a single adult within a 20 yard radius. After my experience the day before, I did nothing. A passing member of staff noticed the boy and said to him in a concerned voice, “Where’s your mammy?” She would have been well within her rights to be annoyed because if the boy had slipped and hurt himself, Roche’s Stores would have had a law suit on their hands. But instead she spoke in a soothing voice as she cajoled and coaxed him down and looked around to reunite him with his rightful owner. It’s not always what you say; it’s how you say it.

Celebrity Cruises - Weddings and Honeymoons Did you get engaged over Christmas or over the New Year? Are you already engaged and in the process of planning a wedding or honeymoon? Or maybe you are organising a renewal of your vows. Well, here is another option for you to consider – saying those vows at sea with a captain-performed ceremony! Does this sound like your ideal wedding? Celebrity Cruises offers a range of options to make that day as special as you wish it to be.

About Celebrity Cruises:

Celebrity Cruises’ iconic “X” is the mark of the world’s top-rated premium cruise line. This cruise line boosts spacious, stylish interiors with dining experiences elevated to an art form and personalized service. With a guest-to-staff ratio of nearly 2:1; the staff service includes trendsetting onboard activities. All these elements are designed to provide an unmatchable experience for vacationers’ precious time. Celebrity Cruises sails to Alaska, Australia/New Zealand, Bermuda, California, Canada/New England, the Caribbean, Europe, Hawaii, the Pacific Coast, Panama Canal, South America, and year-round in the Galapagos Islands. Celebrity Cruises also offers immersive cruise-tour experiences in such places as Alaska, Australia/New Zealand, Canada, Europe and South America. One of the fastest-growing major cruise lines, Celebrity Cruises’ fleet currently consists of ten ships, with one additional Solstice Class ship named Celebrity Reflection scheduled to join the fleet in Autumn 2012.

Wedding Packages

Maybe you are now considering the option of hosting a wedding with Celebrity Cruises. This is a unique way in which you, your significant other and your guests can combine your wedding ceremony and

honeymoon into one complete and special package. Exotic destination weddings have become increasingly popular. Each year, more than 300 couples say “I do” onboard a Celebrity Cruises ship. Celebrity Cruises offers the perfect solution with all-inclusive wedding packages arranged by the dedicated coordinators of The Wedding Experience who coordinate all inport weddings, vow renewals and also help plan weddings to be performed at sea. Celebrity Cruises’ general packages include the services of a local marriage official, a bottle of champagne, wedding cake, floral arrangements and a wedding certificate. A valid marriage license must be obtained from the jurisdiction in which the wedding will take place whether that is in the Caribbean, South America or Canada. The number of weddings permitted on each sailing is limited. Pricing begins at $2,195 and all weddings performed onboard the ship must be in conjunction with a cruise.

Captain-Led Ceremonies With the re-registration of Celebrity Cruises’ seven ships in Malta, it is now possible for captains to perform legal wedding ceremonies at sea. Couples cruising with Celebrity Cruises can now be joined in matrimony onboard

The Village Florist “QUALITY IS OUR BEST SERVICE”

both a docked Celebrity Cruises ship and one sailing through international waters. The captain-performed wedding packages begin at $2,500.

In-port Weddings Fancy an in-port wedding? Engaged couples can exchange vows onboard a Celebrity Cruises vessel while docked in the following ports: Aruba, Baltimore, Barbados, Catalina Island, Cozumel, Fort Lauderdale, Cabo San Lucas, Civitavecchia (Rome), Grand Cayman, Hawaii, Juneau, Ketchikan, Key West, Livorno (Florence), Los Angeles, Miami, New Jersey, New York, Jamaica, San Diego, San Francisco, Santorini, Seattle, St. Lucia, St. Maarten, St. Thomas, San Juan, Tampa and Vancouver.

At-sea weddings Prefer an at-sea wedding? It is important to remember that in accordance with Maltese law, couples who wish to be married by a Celebrity Cruises captain in international waters should allow for at least eight weeks land-based lead time in order to process the required legal documents.

Honeymoon and Anniversary Packages How about your honeymoon or celebrating your anniversary? Celebrity Cruises invites honeymooners and couples celebrating anniversaries to enjoy a romantic breakfast in bed deal. Complete with a bottle of premium champagne, two “special memories” engraved flutes, a flower-filled flexvase, a single red rose, two 100% Egyptian cotton bathrobes, Godiva chocolates and a personalised certificate make this a unforgettable honeymoon or anniversary. Also each sailing which features a honeymoon and anniversary party, the cruise director will invite celebrating couples to enjoy a complimentary champagne toast, cake and dance to live music.

Vow Renewal Packages Not only has there been a rise in exotic destination weddings but the number of couples choosing to renew their wedding vows has increased in popularity too. Celebrity Cruises, in partnership with The Wedding Experience, have two vow renewal packages available to guests: the True Love Knot Renewal and the Aisle to Isle Renewal packages.

True Love Knot Renewal Package

This package includes a ceremony officiated by the ship’s captain in an intimate location onboard the ship, a commemorative vow renewal certificate signed by the captain, recorded ceremony music and a floral bouquet for the bride and matching boutonniere for the groom. It also includes a photography service; one 8x10 photo of the couple with the captain which is then signed by the captain, one 8x10 photo of the ship, a bottle of champagne, two engraved champagne flutes, cake for two and breakfast delivered to the couple’s stateroom.

Aisle to Isle Renewal Package

This package includes a ceremony led by a shipboard ceremony officiant, recorded ceremony music, a bottle of champagne, cake for two, a commemorative vow renewal certificate, a long-stemmed rose for the bride and matching boutonniere for the groom and photography service. Additionally, each Celebrity Vow Renewals Programme can be customised further with á la carte options such as receptions, live music, salon appointments and more.

TuxR Us This well known Cork company started trading after its owner attended a formal hotel function. The difficulty in accessing a city centre location to rent a tuxedo was a genuine hassle. He enquired how this affected booking wedding wear, and learned that the same problem existed. It seemed natural that a mobile service would both solve this situation and prove very popular. Tux r us was launched later that year and has gone form strength to strength. It now boasts a fully stocked store with suits in all colours, and the largest selection of waistcoats and neckwear in the munster area. The delivery and collection of the suits are indeed popular, but it is the “in your own home” fittings for weddings that set them apart.

We have a dedicated staff who love shoes! Understand the importance of glamour and fittings! Shoes which are comfortable as well as beautiful. A lovely selection of bridal footwear from the chic and elegant to stylish heels, the vintage theme still continuous in our low heel courts.

Both Dads and the lads are saved several trips to town. Giving directions to a store can be hit and miss, but the men attending the function will surely know where you live. Some months into their first wedding season, a request was made to attend a residence to dress the men for a funeral. It was remarked by the neighbours at the time, how good a service this was at such a distressing time. Tux r us has seen a tremendous increase in the use of this service in the last few years. It must be very comforting to know that, when so much needs to be taken care of, they are just a phone call away.

The Perfect Dress! Getting engaged is one of the most exciting times of your life! Wedding preparations begin and needless to say ‘The Wedding Dress’ quickly becomes a priority. Your friends will tell you that the experience of trying on wedding dresses is totally different to what you may expect and they are completely right! Many brides-to-be have certain expectations as to what they will like only to find it is the complete opposite that they end up buying. Remember, the only person you are trying to suit is yourself, so don’t be too surprised at what you actually like! The most important thing is not to get too carried away at the beginning and focus on the styles that most flatter your body. From there you will find a beautiful dress with the details you like best. Most shops also offer an array of accessories to complement your dress. Try things on, keep an open mind but only purchase what you feel adds to your look but does not overpower you.

Weddings can also be expensive, especially in these uncertain times. However, setting a budget will help you to decide how much you want to spend on your dress (along with other essentials). Once your budget is set, make sure you shop in the boutiques that cater for your budget. There are many options, including sale dresses, lower cost brands and those in the average to expensive brackets. It also makes sense to shop within a reasonable distance of home as you will have to consider fittings and collection later on. Ask also if the shop does alterations and at what cost. Finally, always make sure your wedding dress shopping is an enjoyable experience. It is something you will probably only do once and it is as much part of your wedding & preparations as anything else. At the end of it you will have your dream dress and all the excitement that goes with it!

Waterford, made using only four ingredients – barley, hops, yeast and water. No chemicals are added to the products, it is unfiltered and unpasteurised and vegan-friendly. Black Rock Irish Stout: A traditional dry Irish stout, full flavoured yet smooth. Roasted barley flavours are nicely complemented by notes of vanilla and aniseed. Enjoy with robust meat dishes or on its own from the shelf. Copper Coast Red Ale: A flavoursome, fruity Irish red ale which uses crystal malt to give a caramel character that is balanced by a light dash of bittering hops. . Confessions of a Bus Conductor By Neil O’Donoghue Identical twins took up employment with C.I.E causing endless trouble for Supervisors trying to distinguish one from the other. An Inspector would detail one of the twins a duty. Minutes later the Inspector would see the guy sitting in the rest room. “Didn’t I tell you to go down to the Statue’, bawls the Inspector. “ That was probably my brother Inspector”.

Condolences to Martin Family We wish to convey our sympathy to our colleague and committee member, Paudie Martin, and his family, on the death of his father, Paddy.

Cork Person of the Year 2012 We were disappointed that our Phil Goodman of the Young at Heart group wasn’t chosen as the overall 2012 winner – but then, Phil is a winner to all in the community of Douglas. We really appreciate the work she has done over the years, the places she taken us to, the educational and social opportunities she has provided such as computer skills, keep-fit, dancing classes, arts and crafts, etc. which has greatly enhanced the lives of the retired people of Douglas. The award went to Liam Casey, founder and CEO of PCH International, a businessman who set up an international supply chain management company in 1996 in Blackrock. Phil, you were in very good company!

Tidy Town Weekly Clean-Up Our Tidy Towns volunteers are back again to their weekly clean-up – some never took the break over the holidays. Just to remind our readers that they meet every Saturday morning at 10.30, and work until noon, picking up litter throughout the Douglas area. You just show up, and they will provide you with a high-viz jacket, a bag and a litter pick.

Volunteers Needed We are drawing up a list of volunteers who can help us out in our fundraising efforts and would be delighted if anyone with a particular talent or idea, contact us at douglasca@eircom. net, by texting us at 086-8917234 or by dropping a note into the centre at the Community Park. You don’t have to be on a committee to help out and people of all ages are welcome.

Office Hours/Monthly Meeting The office is open 3 days a week, Mon. Tue. Friday 9 a.m.-1 pm. If you wish to contact us, or have issues of a community nature you wish us to address, you can always write a note and let it with our administrator, Nicola Forth, or e-mail douglasca@

They provide a service of keeping in regular contact, by way of a friendly social phonecall, to older people within the community. They are supported by volunteers who are HSE-trained and Garda-vetted. Heritage Grants 2012 The Cork City Council Heritage Grant Scheme is aimed at providing core funding in the form of small grants (€200 - €500) for local, communitybased heritage groups and individuals, who are involved in ongoing work that benefits the heritage of Cork City. Examples of eligible activities include holding public talks and meetings, exhibitions, training events, preparation costs for local publications, etc. Activities promoting the importance of all aspects of heritage in local communities and amongst young people are particularly welcome. The closing date for this application is 4pm, Friday, 10th February 2012. For an application form please contact Niamh Twomey, Heritage Officer, Cork City Council, City Hall or Tel 021 4924018 or email heritage@corkcity.ie. This grant scheme is an action from the Cork City Heritage Plan 2007 – 2012. Cllr Kieran McCarthy noted: “the south east part of Cork City has an amazing heritage from sites such as the history and natural wildlife of the Marina to the gorgeous Victorian and Edwardian along routeways such as Douglas Road. I’m interested in helping any group that wishes to promote such heritage plus other areas of heritage interest that are plentiful in this part of the city”. Further ideas for development can be viewed on Kieran’s website, www.corkheritage.ie or on the heritage section of www.kieranmccarthy.ie.

Last week Cork lost one of its finest sons the late John McCarthy. John was the founder of the mental health lobby group Mad Pride. He was the outspoken champion for the rights of those touched by mental illness and was himself diagnosed with motor neurone disease two years ago. Noel Mangier, the well know author of “Is That You Boy” sent us this tribute to John McCarthy. Noel says, it is his “tribute to the great humanitarian that is John McCarthy for I believe his indomitable spirit will always be with us.”

Last Week’s Teazer

This Week’s Teazer

Smart Alec sat In the Biology Class with a smug smile on his face.” What are you looking so pleased about? “ asked the teacher with a feeling of Impending doom. “ I know something that has four legs and two arms” announced Alec proudly. The teacher racked his brains but he could never know. But could think of no creature which fitted this description. What did Alec mean?

A deaf man noticed a bather taking an early morning dip. Just then he saw the tell -tale dorsal fin of a shark approach.

Last Week’s Answer An Armchair

In what way could he communicate with the swimmer?

New Local Phone Number for Care & Repair Age Action has announced that due to the continued expansion of the Care & Repair programme in Cork there is a now a local phone number, 0214536554, which older people can call to arrange to have jobs done around their homes free of charge. Age Action’s Care & Repair service uses a pool of trustworthy volunteer handypersons to carry out oddjobs and DIY work for older people who find it difficult to do these jobs themselves. Some of the jobs that our volunteers can do include changing light bulbs, minor painting and decorating, hanging curtains, minor gardening, minor carpentry and installing smoke alarms. The service is free; clients only pay for the materials used.

For bigger jobs that are beyond the scope of the volunteers, Age Action maintains a register of reliable and honest tradespersons whose contact details can be provided. As well as all of the main trades such as plumbers, electricians, builders etc, they have details for people who service boilers, clean chimneys, clean gutters and many other useful services. Regular social visits to older people can also be arranged. John O Mahony, Care & Repair Development Officer, says “I’m delighted that we now have a local Care & Repair phone number in Cork. This will make it quicker and easier for people to access our services and

I would ask anybody who thinks that we might be able to help them around the house to contact me on 0214536554. I would be happy to chat to people about how we can assist them.” Age Action is Ireland’s leading charity for older people. They believe that Ireland should be the best place in which to grow older. They work to fight discrimination, promote positive ageing and improve policies and services for all older people. Phone: 021-4536554

Fall Prevention Falls put you at risk of serious injury. Prevent falls with these simple fallprevention measures, from reviewing your medications to hazard-proofing your home. Fall prevention may not seem like a lively topic, but it’s important. As you get older, physical changes and health conditions — and sometimes the medications used to treat those conditions — make falls more likely. In fact, falls are a leading cause of injury among older adults. Still, fear of falling doesn’t need to rule your life. Instead, consider six simple fallprevention strategies.

How do I handle mum’s Alzheimer’s?

1. M ake an appointment with your doctor Begin your fall-prevention plan by making an appointment with your doctor. Be prepared to answer questions such as: • What medications are you taking?

3. W ear sensible shoes Consider changing your footwear as part of your fall-prevention plan. High heels, floppy slippers and shoes with slick soles can make you slip, stumble and fall. So can walking in your stocking feet.

• Have you fallen before?

4. R emove home hazards

• Could your health conditions cause a fall?

Take a look around your home. Your living room, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, hallways and stairways may be filled with hazards. To make your home safer:

2. Keep moving Physical activity can go a long way toward fall prevention. Consider activities such as walking, water workouts or tai chi — a gentle exercise that involves slow and graceful dance-like movements. Such activities reduce the risk of falls by improving strength, balance, coordination and flexibility.

Diabetes, what do I do now?

• Remove boxes, newspapers, electrical cords and phone cords from walkways. • Move coffee tables, magazine racks and plant stands from high-traffic areas. • Secure loose rugs with doublefaced tape, tacks or a slip-resistant

We can help you with any health

backing — or remove loose rugs from your home. • Repair loose, wooden floorboards and carpeting right away.

5. L ight up your living space Keep your home brightly lit to avoid tripping on objects that are hard to see. Also:

6. U se assistive devices Your doctor might recommend using a cane or walker to keep you steady. Other assistive devices can help, too. For example: Hand rails for both sides of stairways Nonslip treads for bare-wood steps

Things to do This Week (As snowdrops, crocus, daffodil’s and spring flowers are beginning to make an appearance it’s not any harm to put some grit around them to prevent any snails, who are never far away, from doing any damage. This article might give you a few ideas. Now not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.

Flower Garden

Greenhouse

Check the supports of climbers, repair if necessary and treat with preservative. Take root cuttings of perennials such as phlox, anchusa, Japanese anemones and oriental poppies. Continue planting deciduous trees and shrubs when soil conditions are suitable. Feed early-flowering perennials with bonemeal or general fertiliser.

Sow sweet peas in small pots in gentle heat. Sow cucumbers and melons for growing in heated greenhouses. Sow an early leek variety and prick out into trays. Sow round carrots in clusters in modules for planting out unthinned. Sow alpine strawberries in gentle heat, prick out into small pots and plant in May for a crop this year.

Kitchen Garden Plant new rhubarb crowns in wellprepared soil. Sow hardy broad beans and round-seeded peas under cloches. Feed onion sets and seedlings sown in Autumn with a high-nitrogen fertiliser. Sow lettuce, carrots, turnips and radishes in a soil-based cold frame.

Lawns & Hedges Prune overgrown hedges to 30cm (12in) below final size to allow for re-growth. Finish laying turf by end of the month for rapid establishment. Start preparing sites for sowing new lawns in the Spring.

Water Garden Use a net to clear any floating leaves and plant debris from the surface.

In General Repair and sharpen tools ready for Spring cultivation. Hoe or handweed generally, especially in a mild season when weeks start growth early.

The Way of Things “The Circle will not be mended as long as the People war among themselves. It will not be mended as long as we try to mend the Sacred Circle with broken Circles. We all need to pray on this...” Gary Armstrong (Famous Quotes of North American Indians)

About Organic Gardening and Why it Should Matter to You The definition of organic depends on your focus, but some define it as of, relating to, or derived from living organisms. The chemist’s version uses the word to designate carbon compounds, and that also plays into our garden. But what do most people think of when you say organic? Another definition is simple, healthful, close to nature. Sure, that part fits too. Yet another definition is constituting an integral part of a whole. So what have we got? Organic gardening is a simple healthful way to convert living organisms into carbon compounds in a way that considers the whole of nature and its integral place in that scheme. There, all the definitions in one sentence.

Sounds good, but what does Organic Gardening mean? When man started farming and raising plants, organic was all there was. You

put humus (partial/fully decomposed plant or animal material) back into the soil to maintain fertility and you farmed until the soil gave out. But farming was at the subsistence level, so not a big deal; they moved on when the soil gave out. Mass Production Comes to the Farm Then as farming became organized, we didn’t want to move around as much. People learned to rotate crops and use green manures and leave fallow areas to help keep the soil healthy. Fast forward to modern times: With the Industrial Revolution came a mass move to the cities and very few people producing most of the food. The tractor answered the biggest part of the labour issue and deep ploughing helped with fertility, but fertilization was still very labour intensive as it required huge quantities of manure to get the yields to feed burgeoning cities.

Soccer Nostalgia ( by Finbarr Buckley ) Nicky’s Irish cap is well worth the sixty year wait! NICKY HAYES, the former Evergreen Utd. left-back, recently received his Ireland amateur cap over sixty years after representing his country against The Gold Coast at Dalymount Pk. on Wednesday, August 22nd 1951. Nicky, who is one of the few remaining survivors of the only all-Cork 1953 FAI Cup Final between Evergreen & Cork Athletic, was overjoyed when he opened his post on Wednesday, January 18th last to find his international cap enclosed. ‘ I couldn’t believe it ,’ was the initial response of the lively 86 six-year-old who was twenty-five when he lined out along side fellow Corkonians, Evergreen team-mate Joe Conway & the Cork Athletic pair of Johnny Vaughan & Frankie Hennessy. ‘Money was very tight in those days, and honouring players with ‘caps’ maybe wasn’t the done thing.’ He began his career with Western Rovers before playing a major role in the foundation of Albert Rovers in the aftermath of the war years. Following Evergreen Utd.’s election to the League of Itreland in 1951/52, he quickly established himself in Cork’s second premier team, alongside established stars Big Seanie McCarthy & Con ‘Brasso’ McCarthy. Despite losing out to Mick Taylor in the run up to the ’53 Cup Final, he did have the honour of replacing his team-mate in the final replay at Dalymount on Wednesday, April 29th 1953.

But undoubtedly, the highlight of his playing career remains his representative honour against the touring Southern African XI, who outplayed the hosts before losing by the odd goal in seven. ‘I remember out trainer, Dougie Livingstone telling us to take it easy as the tourists played in their bare feet, with only a bandage covering the toes and a heel pad over the ankles.’ With the sides level at the interval, Waterford’s Danny Fitzgerald having opened the scoring & Darbah equalizing for the visitors, Livingstone quickly informed his charges to get ‘stuck in’ such was the speed and confident touch of their opponents. In the second-half Fitzgerald & Gespar exchanged goals before Vaughan & Fitzgerald stretched the hosts lead. Cape Coast’s striker MacAuley finished the scoring with nine minutes remaining. Hayes took up refereeing along with brother Frank & team-mate Derry Barrett when his playing career finished, going on to become a popular assessor in the seventies. His family wishes to thank the following for their encouragement and support in acquiring his cap : Gary & Bernard Spain who sourced the original match programme, the late Castleview international Davy Morris , whose acquisition of his own cap kickstarted the process, the staff of Cork City Council’s Central Library local history dept. & FAI staff members Philip Behan & Dennis Cruise.

500-Year-Old parachute Leonardo da Vinci wrote in a notebook in 1485, “If a man is provided with a length of gummed linen cloth with a length of 12 yards on each side and 12 yards high. he can jump from any great height whatsoever without any injury.” Alongside was his sketch of how such a cloth might look ( a pyramid shaped parachute). A few week ago, over Mpumalanga province in South Africa, British skydiver Adrian Nicholas was strapped into an exact replica of Leonardo’s design, and lifted to 3 km by a hot air balloon. Parachutists and experts in aerodynamics had predicted that the canvas pyramid would fail. In the event, the 85-kg contraption worked remarkably well -floating so gently for 2.13km before Nicholas switched to a conventional parachute for the final drop that accompanying parachutists had to slow down to stay level. “It took one of the greatest minds who ever lived to design it,” said Nicholas, “but it took 500 years to find a man with a brain small enough to actually go and fly it.”

47 jobs created in Ireland over the last 6 months by Renault French motor company Renault generated 47 jobs in Ireland over the last six months. The jobs were as a result of the launch of Renault Finance, the introduction of ZE ambassadors and the opening of two new dealerships. In August, Renault Finance saw 15 new jobs created in operations, finance and marketing roles. These positions are based at Renault Ireland’s HQ in Dublin, Renault Finance which is headed up by Alessandro Garzia, Managing Director RCI Banque Ireland. In September, following a nationwide recruitment campaign in July to find a number of electric vehicle ambassadors, Renault announced 8 new recruits. These ambassadors are dedicated to the Renault range of electric vehicles and will help to build awareness and assist customers in making informed choices. Also

as part of their responsibilities, the EV Ambassadors will manage internal training, marketing, leads development and network development amongst others. Based in key dealerships around the country, these ambassadors will play a crucial part in the launch of Renault electric range of vehicles. November saw the opening of two brand new premises; Tullamore Motors in Offaly and Dennehy Motors in Limerick. The two new premises will see 24 new jobs created over the next 12 months which is great news for both counties. The new dealerships offer a first class service in new Renault vehicle sales, Renault parts sales, car servicing, contract hire and leasing. They will provide a full range of Renault passenger and commercial vehicles along with the new Renault ZE range that launched in November.

Eric Basset, Renault Ireland Managing Director:

“These are good news stories for Ireland in these difficult times. We are delighted to welcome RCI Banque, the ZE ambassadors and the two new Renault dealerships. We are pleased to help create much needed employment in a sector that has suffered so badly over the past number of years. All in all this is good news for Renault and a well needed boost to the Irish workforce”.

G.A.A. FOCUS By Pat Harrington Snippets from the local and National Scene Hurling Championship Draw

The draws for the senior hurling championship has thrown up some interesting pairings. Glen Rovers and St. Finbarrs is a hugely traditional fixture which in times past would have drawn huge crowds. But times have moved on and competition from other sports has seen attendances dwindle. Clubs now have three chances to progress, meaning they can lose two games and still go forward. The Glen have been most impressive in recent years, reaching a county final in 2010. The Barr’s had a fine win against Érin’s Own last year but failed miserably in their next outing. It may have been just a slip on the day but The glen look to be more likely winners.

Midleton vs. Bishopstown

Midleton are now very similar to what the Bishopstown were a few years ago – winning both minor and under 21 county titles. For some reason the town have disappointed since then, making little or no impact. The East Cork side to progress here. Cloyne vs. Sarsfields

Cloyne certainly surprised me last year with the progress made. Sars have been the kingpins over the past few years and have a new manager this year in Pat Ryan. This is of course a local derby and is not to be look on as a foregone conclusion. I’d favour Sars here this time. Newtownshandrum vs. Killeagh

The Baron is back as manager but Newtown’s problem is the number

Grangevale AFC League AUL 1A Rathcoole 0 – Grangevale 2

Grangevale bounced back from the 2-3 defeat to Crescent in last weeks City Cup game with a deserved 2-0 victory over Rathcoole Rovers in Cooney Park on Saturday afternoon. Birthday boy Paul O’Halloran started in goal and was protected by a back four of Dan Cronin, Keith O’Callaghan, Shane Kennedy and Colin McSweeney. Damo O’Callaghan, John Harris, Ross Farrell and Colin Murphy (C) made up the midfield with Dave O’Connor and Mark Hackett up front. Top scorer Adam Cann was unavailable for this fixture due to work commitments so Dave O’Connor got the nod to start alongside Hackett up front for this encounter. Rathcoole started brightly and should have gone one up after 6 minutes when their striker had an open goal but failed to make contact with the cross. This was a let off for The Vale and seemed to spur them into action. The soft underfoot conditions made this game difficult but when the lads managed to get a passing game going they looked very dangerous. In fact, the opener came from a great passage of passing

play in the 19th minute involving Harris, O’Callaghan, Farrell and Hackett, culminating in O’Connor finishing coolly. The Vale were unfortunate not to be 2-0 ahead soon after, but Hackett’s shot came back off the upright and was cleared. At half time it was all to play for. Rathcoole began the second half as per their tactics in the first, opting for the long ball on most occasions which the Grangevale defense were coping comfortably with. The second goal came thanks to great work on the left flank by O’Connor and Murphy was on hand to fire home from close range. Maher replaced Hackett and Holland was introduced to replace Farrell. The game got scrappy towards the end and unfortunately Holland was dismissed in the 88th minute for a second bookable offense. Despite being a man down, all the good play came from the visitors and Maher was unlucky to see a last minute effort go narrowly wide. The Vale were glad to hit the road home with all three points in the bag and ensure that they will still be in second place in the league table for next Sunday’s visit of Millstreet Celtic, kick off 10.45 in Grangevale Park.

of players they will have involved with the county. This is a distraction which can interfere with preparation. Killeagh have some talented players coming up but my opinion is it must be Newtown. Na Piarsaigh vs. Douglas

Na Piarsaigh will start the season with plenty of experience. Last year four of their six starting forwards were under 21. They can be a bit of an enigma at times. 2010 in the opening round against the Glen they were awesome, but failed to build on that display. Douglas on the other hand has too many dual players. In 2010 they seemed to be progressing nicely, reaching the semi-final. 2011 proved to be most disappointing as the squad failed to match the performances of

the previous year. The squad of 2012 will need to step up their play as big performances will be required of them. Three of the 2011 defence have to be replaced; perhaps some of last years minors might step up. Perhaps the Northsiders have more potential bur with the right mindset Douglas could surely rattle them. Seán O’Brien has been appointed coach to Na Piarsaigh. Seán is a former Midleton centre back and was part of a very successful team. He has coached Cork intermediate hurlers to two all-Ireland title as well as leading Blarney to County, Provisional and all-Ireland success, also at intermediate level. Carrigtwohill vs. DeCourceys

This could be an interesting clash.

College Corinthians AFC It was a great weekend for our three under 12 teams as they all recorded victories with our Premier side winning a seven goal thriller against Lakewood while Corinthians A & B squads both progressed in the opening round of the local Cup. Our Under 16 Premier and Under 17 A squads maintained their 100% league records with solid victories. Schoolboys Section Under 12 Premier Division Lakewood Ath. 3 Corinthian Boys 4

Corinthians started the game well and attacked from the start with some very good passing moves creating a number of chances, none of which were taken. All this pressure eventually paid off when a Conor Russell free kick which the keeper couldn’t hold was followed in by Rory Doyle and finished to the net. Lakewood equalised from a corner right on half time meaning it was all to do for the second half into a strong wind. To their credit Corinthians battled for everything from the start and were rewarded when a superb through ball from Conor Russell was seized upon by Rory Doyle and finished calmly to the net. This lead didn’t last long though as a clearance out of defence was volleyed into the air and looped over Colin O Mahony in the Corinthians goal giving him no chance. Corinthians showed a great attitude and determination from this point and a well worked passing move was finished to the net by Conor Fagan. Corinthians extended their lead a few mins later when Adam Coleman played in Daniel O Donovan who squared it to Conor Fagan to finish. The game had one last twist when Lakewood scored from another corner with the last kick of the game. Patrick Buckley, Padraig Nash, Mark Cronin and Colin O Mahony did well in a great squad performance. Local Cup Kanturk 0 Corinthian Boys A 5

Corinthian Boys B 2 Carrigaline A 2 (Cors won 5-3 on pens)

Corinthians B won a very exciting local Cup clash with Carrigaline A in dramatic circumstances as they squeezed through in a penalty shoot out. Playing with a strong wind in the first half Corinthians led 2-0 nil at the break but Carrigaline fought back scoring twice to force the game into extra time which brought no further goals. Under 16 Premier Division Corinthian Boys 2 Blarney Utd. 0

Corinthians made it twelve league wins out of twelve with this latest victory over Blarney. It certainly wasn’t easy as Corinthians struggled to turn possession into goals against a well organized Blarney side. The breakthrough eventually came when Darren Black scored from close range and Vas added a second near the end. Corinthians now only need one more victory to clinch the Premier League title. Under 17 College Corinthians A 3 Douglas Hall 1

College Corinthians were lucky to win a tough contest with Douglas Hall looking sharper and hungrier for success. Corinthians scored within the first few minutes and scored again before half time to make it 2-0. Greg Barry got both goals. In the second half Douglas Hall playing with the wind hit the crossbar twice and scored a goal to make it 3-1. They missed some good opportunities and Kieran Dineen made some good saves for Corinthians.Jason Higgins scored in the second half to make it 3 for Corinthians. Best for Corinthians on the day Greg Barry,Gus Lewis and Jason Higgins and Brian O Leary Underage Section

After a slow start, Corinthians got into their stride when Adam Murphy scored the opener after 10 minutes. Up to that point Kanturk had the better of the play without creating any clear chances. Once Corinthians took the lead there was no way back for the home side. Corinthians scored again before the interval when Dylan Fenton broke onto a through ball and found the net before the Kanturk goalkeeper closed him down. In the second half two more goals, one each for Adam and Dylan closed out the game before Jack O’Sullivan finished the scoring

with a great sole run and shot on goal. Other than the goal scorers, John O’Sullivan at right back played well, creating the third goal and Brian Freeman and Sam O’Sullivan on either wing played well.

Underage training takes place every weekend in Corinthians and new members are always welcome. Training times are as follows Saturday

Fishing Trip One Saturday morning he gets up early, dresses quietly, gets his lunch made, puts on his long johns, grabs the dog and goes to the garage to hook up his boat to the truck and down the driveway he goes. As he gets to the street he realizes it’s worse than he thought: there is snow mixed in with the rain, and the wind is blowing 50 mph. Minutes later, he returns to the garage. He comes back into the house and turns the TV to the weather channel. He finds it’s going to be bad weather all day long, so he puts his boat back in the garage, quietly undresses and slips back into bed. There he cuddles up to his wife’s back, now with a different anticipation and whispers, “The weather out there is terrible.” To which she sleepily replies, “And can you believe my stupid husband is out fishing in that crap?”
