A Gordon Setter is an active dog and owners should be prepared to devote time to providing suitable exercise, such as walks, with access to an off-lead area where it can run freely. The breed is very intelligent and responds well to training. The Gordon Setter is patient, loyal and wellknown for its attachment to family.

Chairman's REPORT
Dear Members,
The National Obedience, Rally and Trick Trials event held at our Orchard Hills grounds was a great success. The day started off with great weather, an opening with Kate Parry-Rice singing our National Anthem, to the many competitors - a total of 737 entries for both days. Congratulations to the Obedience, Tracking & Performance Disciplines Committee for staging such a wonderful event.
With the changing times and our acknowledgement that there are so many aspects of companionship we can share with our dogs in the many and varied sports, along with our traditional conformation shows, it was great to see so many rings filled with sports from Obedience to Trick Dogs.
Members have been more vigilant in observing their local council notices and are becoming aware of some councils’ approach or changing attitudes to the keeping of animals. It is important for members to take note of any changes that a local council may be considering to adopt in their keeping of animals policies which can become more restrictive having consequences that will further restrict the breeding and owning of pets.
The Royal Agricultural Society of NSW invited DOGS NSW to provide purebred puppies to the Childrens Hospitals Westmead and Randwick. It was a great opportunity to showcase some lovely purebred puppies to the sick children and a very generous gesture from two of our DOGS NSW members, Sue McFadden and Marilyn Parker.
The promotion of our Dogs On Show event, scheduled for 14 June 2025, is well under way and we encourage as many clubs as possible to attend this great day.
Kind Regards
Lyn Brand
DOGS NSW President
Her Excellency The Honourable Margaret Beazley AO KC, Governor of New South Wales
The Field Spaniel Club of NSW celebrated their very 1st Annual Championship Show on Good Friday, 18 April 2025. With Judge Jouka Leiviska from Finland, a festive atmosphere, and a well organised show, the event was a great success. Coverage of this inaugural event commences on page 10.
Every year, prior to the Royal Easter Show, The Royal Agricultural Society of NSW invite some very special guests to help find the best Show Bag. Over forty children from The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick and the Starlight Children’s Foundation became official Showbag Experts for the 2025 Royal Easter Show. DOGS NSW is very honoured to have participated in this event for the past few years by bringing along puppies for children and adults to pat and cuddle. Coverage of this year’s event appears on page 8.
Socialisation of your canine companion is so important for the health and welfare of your dog, but also makes life so much easier for owners, particularly when venturing out to the vet, going for walks and general contact with other dogs and people. Socialisation should preferably commence at any early age, however the article, which appears on page 19, discusses all aspects of socialisation, even as adult or rehomed dogs.
The spotlight feature breed this month is the Gordon Setter; an intensely loyal breed that thrives in an attentive, loving environment, making a good family dog. Puppies and adult dogs can be quite boisterous, and although they are patient by nature, may not be suitable for households with very young children. Gordons are sensitive and empathic, eager to learn, and need firm but gentle handling. Early socialisation and obedience training are important. The breed is one of the slowest to mature, not hitting prime until three years of age or more. Gordon Setters were bred to run, and require 60 to 80 minutes of vigorous exercise daily. The feature commences on page 16.
April’s Competition to win a copy of ‘The Dog Owner’s Manual’ by Dr Karen Hedberg was won by Kirsty Meikle, Tamara Hargraves, Noelene Black and Raine M Sloss. Congratulations to all winners!

Sick Kids Test Showbags with a Helping Paw from DOGS NSW
In March of this year, the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW invited over forty children from The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick and the Starlight Children’s Foundation to become official Showbag Experts for the 2025 Royal Easter Show. Their task is to have fun and help find the best showbag for Sydney Royal Showgoers.
For these seriously ill children, it is a welcome distraction with balloons, tricksters, face-painting, fairies, ponies, alpacas and puppies to pat.
DOGS NSW is very honoured to have participated in this event for the past few years by bringing along puppies for children and adults to pat and cuddle.
This year, Marilyn Parker and I took three 8-week-old Labrador Retriever puppies bred by Guy Spagnolo. They were a huge hit and just loved every bit of attention. After all, who can resist a Labrador puppy?
At 11.00am, with much excitement, the children attended the showbag reveal. By midday, their job was done and all came out with many showbags and massive smiles. After giving the puppies a final pat, they headed out for lunch and drinks.
It made us enormously proud to be DOGS NSW members and breeders and one of the most heart-warming experiences to see how much joy this day gives these wonderful children.

The 1st Annual Field Spaniel Club of NSW Show
The Field Spaniel Club of NSW (FSCNSW) is Australia’s first Field Spaniel Club and, on Good Friday, hosted our first Annual Championship Show, smashing a record in the process. We were delighted to have Jouko Leiviskä from Finland as our judge for our 1st Annual Field Spaniel Club of NSW Championship Show. Jouko has judged in almost all European countries, including England and Ireland, plus regularly in Australia.
In honour of Diane Seymour, who introduced the first Field Spaniel to Australia, we created the Diane Seymour Perpetual Trophy. Diane re-introduced the Field Spaniel into Australia in 1989 after falling in love with the breed on one of her trips back to the UK. With the help of Peggy Grayson, Diane imported two Fields, a male and a female, CH. Oldholbans Knight At Arms and CH. Solotown Solitaire. These were to be the first sire and dam of Field Spaniels in Australia.
We were lucky enough to have Diane’s daughter, Diane, at our show to present the Best in Show Perpetual Trophy and Runner up in Show Shields to the winners.

Jo Reimer, Judge Jouka Leiviska and Diane Seymour presenting the Best In Show Perpetual Trophy.
A very special thank you to our generous anonymous donor for sponsoring this magnificent Trophy.
We had over 20 sponsors for our prizes, from individuals and iconic Australian pet brands, with each class winner receiving a prize pack valued at over $350. Our cash prizes were donated by Birdrise Field Spaniels (SA), Daintyfield Field Spaniels (NSW) and beautiful rosettes and sashes by Shevington Field Spaniels (SA).
Held at DOGS NSW grounds, the show garnered 42 entries from exhibitors from all around Australia, a record number of Field Spaniels at a show in Australia.
Congratulations to all our exhibitors and winners of our show; it was a truly special day.
Jo Reimer, who is the owner of our Best in Show, said:
“It is such a privilege to have been awarded Best in Show at the Inaugural Championship Show with my amazing Cilla and to be awarded The Diane Seymour Memorial Trophy. Diane was an early mentor of mine and was instrumental in importing quality Field Spaniels into Australia back in the 1980/90’s. I am personally very thankful to Diane for her foresight and commitment to delivering quality in the breed to this country, as I would not have my amazing dogs without her and her partners in Fields, Yvonne and Robert Lauder.”
“I would also like to recognise and congratulate the club as being the first Field Spaniel Club in Australia. The committee, of whom most are relatively new to the dog world, have done an amazing job of not only pulling together the Club itself, but putting on a world class show and securing quality sponsors from breeders and dog product producers across Australia, all in their first year! They should all be proud of their achievements.”

Julie Morrison who is the owner of our Runner Up Best In Show said:
“To be awarded RUBIS from a record number of quality Field Spaniels was unexpected and an absolute thrill. It was an honour to receive the Diane Seymour RUBIS Perpetual Trophy. It was also my pleasure to sponsor the Veterans Parade and watch these beautiful oldies strut their stuff. Thank you to everyone involved for making this day so special.”
Julie Morrison of Fayemor Field Spaniels kindly sponsored our Veteran’s Parade, which was for all those Field Spaniels who are 7 years of age or older, and consisted of a lap of honour around the show ring as their titles were read out. Every veteran received a Medallion for being in the very first Field Spaniel Club of NSW Veterans Parade.
Our show also featured a Bake Stand, Club Merchandise area for members to try on samples and our highlypopular raffle drum for extra ticket sales.
We had wonderful prizes including tropical holidays, a boat day on Sydney Harbour and more.
The Raffle, Merchandise and Bake Stand helped raise over $3,000 for the club to help set up our club for success.
Our binded catalogue included features about the origins of our Perpetual Trophy, Field Spaniels in Dog Sports, Breeder advertisements and more. It’s now a keepsake for the future to help commemorate the show.
Roslyn Thomas from the Poodle Club of NSW was also in attendance and said “I have attended many shows, over about a fifty-year period. On Friday I attended the Field Spaniel Show, which was, without a doubt, one of the nicest shows I have ever attended. It was well run and the atmosphere amongst the exhibitors was great. It was wonderful to see about forty Field Spaniels all in one place, a sight which has never occurred before. What an educational experience for the onlookers and also the exhibitors. Congratulations, may this be the beginning of many events in the future conducted by this new club.”
Thank you to Stephen Oliver, our Steward for our 1st Annual Field Spaniel Club of NSW Championship Show for giving Jouko and our exhibitors a warm welcome. A very special thank you to Roslyn Thomas and the Poodle Club of NSW for bringing Jouko to Australia and supporting our new Club.
Thank you Dana Russo for capturing beautiful shots at our show.
The Club was created for Field Spaniel owners, breeders and enthusiasts throughout Australia. Our aim is to preserve and promote this rare breed, through a range of activities for breeders and owners alike, including championship shows, fun and information days for pet owners (and would-be owners) and a range of performance events including Scent Work, Sprint DogTM and other sports incorporating all breeds.
As we look forward, we have plenty of other activities lined up for the club and greater DOGS NSW community ranging from Introduction to Scent Work Workshops through to our Scent Work trial in August. We are passionate about promoting our rare breed and also paving the way for the next generation of Field Spaniels and their owners.

New Study Reveals Dogs’ Remarkable Ability to Listen to Human Speech
A new study conducted by animal behaviour and mammalian cognition experts at the Universities of Lincoln and Sussex, and Jean Monnet University, reveals that dogs may be far better at understanding human speech than previously understood. The group’s research paper, Domestic dogs (Canis familiaris) recognise meaningful content in monotonous streams of read speech), explains that dogs actually ‘listen in’ when we are speaking, even if the speech is not directed at them. According to the findings, dogs possess the neurological capacity to passively sift through information and commands relevant to them when humans are talking.
Humans and dogs have lived symbiotically for over 14,000 years, yet despite our mutualistic bond, there remains a poor understanding of whether dogs do understand what we say. The group investigated whether dogs can spontaneously identify meaningful content in a stream of irrelevant speech that is spoken in a monotone voice.
A mixed group of dogs from a variety of breeds were recruited for the exercise and were each exposed to a stream of speech which contained both relevant commands and irrelevant information, all spoken in a flat tone. Surprisingly, the dogs consistently responded to the commands, demonstrating their ability to extract meaningful verbal content from what was spoken.
Typically, when addressing our canine companions, we deliver commands in isolation with exaggerated intonationknown as dog-directed speech (DDS), which provide vocal cues to the animal to pay attention. This DDS closely resembles the “baby talk”, or infant-directed speech, used with young children.
The implications of these findings have an expansive reach in the field of human-animal interactions and highlight that dogs are equipped with the neural architecture to support speech recognition, that could be advantageous when training service dogs.
Dr Holly Root-Gutteridge, Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Lincoln, commented: “Dogs understand that we say their name to get their attention, and this is almost always paired with a happy ‘baby talk’ speech register because dogs prefer it. We wanted to see if dogs were only responding to this happy voice or if they could recognise their name, even when it was buried in a sentence and delivered in a flat voice.
“We found that dogs could absolutely find their name when presented in a monotone way and buried in stream of irrelevant speech - a prerequisite for comprehending language - and shows how good they are at listening to us. We also discovered that they gave those familiar words about the same degree of attention as the meaningless words spoken in the DDS ‘happy voice’, but less than if we paired up their name and the DDS voice.
“So, this means that they’re listening to us all the time and can pick out their name, but they will pay more attention if you give them both cues. So, “Sheba, come on then” gets more attention from her if you sound eager to see her.”
Project leader, Professor David Reby at the University of Saint Etienne and Visiting Professor at the University of Sussex where the research was initiated, said: “We show that dogs can recognise speech information relevant to them in the absence of the usual prosody we use when we address them.
“The fact that basic verbal information can be perceived by a species that does not speak either indicates that human speech exploits perceptual abilities present in other mammals, or that dogs have a special ear for human speech as a consequence of domestication.”
The research was funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Research Sciences Council.

Gordon Setter
History
The Gordon Setter derives its name from the fourth Duke of Gordon (1743–1827) who established a kennel of setters at Gordon Castle in Scotland. They were bred to find grouse on the rugged, heather-covered moors of the Highlands.
The breed was first recorded in Australia in 1865.
Characteristics
The Gordon Setter’s classic function requires it to quarter the ground searching for game birds by catching their scent above grasses and low-growing bushes, such as heather. The breed is then required to point or set to indicate the bird’s location to its handler and remain in that position as its handler approaches and the bird rises.
In some countries, the Gordon Setter is used as a utility Gundog and, as such, is required to find and retrieve other game as well. In Australia today, it is a multi-purpose dog, being a willing obedience dog and a devoted and loyal guardian.
Temperament
A Gordon Setter is an active dog and owners should be prepared to devote time to providing suitable exercise, such as walks, with access to an off-lead area where it can run freely.
The breed is an intelligent animal and responds very well to training, which ideally should be started early on in your dog’s life. It also makes a very good house dog and is patient, loyal and well-known for its attachment to its family.
Appearance
The breed standard describes the breed as a ‘stylish dog, with galloping lines’. It is approximately 62–66cm in height and the male weighs around 29.5kg, with the female usually smaller at 25.5kg. The most striking aspect of its appearance is its black and tan coat, which is moderate in length with fringing on the ears, belly and tail.

SPOTLIGHT
Health
Breeders of the Gordon Setter have been very diligent in monitoring their dogs for Hip and Elbow Dysplasia and, as a result, the incidence of these problems is low.
Another health issue that has appeared in the past few years is Late-Onset Progressive Retinal Atrophy (LOPRA), where affected dogs will slowly go blind from the age of about 9 to 10 years. Most breeders use DNA testing to screen any dogs they use, and it is hoped that this problem will be minimised or disappear in a few generations. The Gordon Setter generally lives 12–14 years.
Maintenance
Good feeding and grooming will keep your Gordon Setter looking its best. The coat should be regularly brushed and any knots in the longer parts removed. Eyes and ears should be checked and cleaned, and feathering between the toes should be trimmed to avoid painful knots forming. The breed should of course be kept flea and tick free. The Gordon Setter Club of NSW provides field days where correct grooming techniques are demonstrated.
Suitability
The Gordon Setter makes a great dog for an active person or family. It is loyal and trustworthy and thrives when involved in family life. The breed is intelligent, willing to please, cooperative, and as a result, has been very successful at Obedience work. Many have also competed successfully in Agility, Tracking, Jumping and Flyball as well as in the show ring.
The Gordon Setter is generally very good with children and can run and play well with dogs of other breeds.

How to Socialis e your Dog
Did you know that socialisation helps reduce stress and anxiety in your dog? It also makes many other facets of their and your life easy, from vet visits to bonding, to their overall health. That’s why it’s important you regularly introduce your dog to other dogs and people from an early age, giving them time to play and interact.
But how’s the best way to introduce your dog to new friends? While you can help your dog de-stress and reward good behaviour after the fact with a dog treat, there’s more to it than just giving your dog positive reinforcement afterwards. Here’s how you should approach socialisation with puppies, adolescent dogs, seniors and rescue dogs:
Socialising Your Puppy
When it comes to raising a puppy, it can feel like a full-time job. You’re being woken up multiple times every night, they don’t do well being left alone, and they’re fearful of new things, dogs and strangers. But it makes sense. Much of the world doesn’t make sense to your puppy. They’re like a baby, and they need guidance while moving through their new world.
The learning window for your dog needs to be addressed during their early life — from about one month of age to five months. Yet how do you properly train them during this time, helping them learn the ropes so they can socialise with ease?
Feeding Time
A simple way to work with your puppy on comfort around others is to see how they react while they’re eating. A major issue for dogs is resource guarding - instances where your dog will either steal from others, or become incredibly defensive of the things that are theirs.
A simple way to work on this is to regularly approach them while they’re eating (or playing with a new toy). For instance, if they’re at their feeding bowl, walk up behind them as they eat and lightly pet them on the butt. Similarly, if they’re chewing on a dog bone, try and reach out and take it from them, for a moment. If they react aggressively, act as if they hurt you. It might sound cruel, but it’s a simple way to show them that they shouldn’t hurt those who are nice to them - that they shouldn’t bite the hand that feeds.
White Noise & more
Noise can be harmful to a puppy. It won’t harm their hearing, but it’s going to perturb them, causing discomfort that could lead to barking and reactivity. So take the time to get them used to the various things in your home and elsewhere. This includes the sound of music, your car, bicycles, skateboards, vacuum cleaners, washing machines, fans, and more.
H aving Time Alone
Another key issue that extends to socialisation is ensuring your dog is okay being alone. The truth is that your dog is going to be alone throughout the day, particularly while you work. If your dog is not okay with it, they’re going to
Having Time Alone
get antsy, stressed, anxious and upset. This can all lead to the emergence of bad behaviours, such as acting out aggressively to other small slights. One of the simple ways to work on this is to work at crate training.
Crate training can be tough, especially with a puppy, but with patience it can make a big difference in your dog’s life
Socialising YOUR PUPP Y
Approach them while they’re eating
Get them used to the various sounds
Ensure your dog is okay being alone
Be sure to keep aggresssion at bay
Get them used to being touched
A good idea is to slowly get them used to their crate. It might not sound like much, but it’s a simple way to teach them their crate is a safe space, not a place of discomfort. That time alone can, soon enough, become a place of comfort that will lead to better interactions with new people and dogs
Keep Aggression at Bay
Similar to the issue of resource guarding, your dog might naturally be inclined to be aggressive to others, especially if they take them by surprise or invade their personal space. Help curtail this as soon as possible by working on positive reinforcement (and reminders). They act aggressively towards you? Act as if they hurt you. They snarl at another dog while out on a walk? Remove them from the situation until they calm down. Finally, start rewarding them when they act well. It will teach them there’s a benefit to being calm around others. This is especially important once they start teething.
Handle them Regularly
You need to get them used to being touched and groomed by others, whether they be dogs or people. Throughout the day, take time to pet their head, ears, belly, paws, and back. These are minor ways to get them used to being touched. Eventually, they’ll begin growing accustomed to it and will start welcoming it, seeing it as a sign of both comfort and love

Socialisation & your Adult Dog
Socialising an adolescent and adult dog is all about creating routines. Dogs do best when they have a routine to work from, as it provides them with a means to understand their dayto-day life.
What does this involve? It’s a mixture of keeping them puppy-like and playful and giving them a routine they can understand, as well as regularly rewarding them for good behaviour, like handing them tricks.
Watching their Playtime
One of the best things you can do is just introduce your dogs to other people and dogs, watching their behaviour the entire time the interaction takes place. You’ll want to make sure they’re comfortable and aren’t showing signs of aggression. However, if they are showing aggression, don’t worry.
That and barking are natural signs of discomfort in dogs. It doesn’t mean they want to cause harm, they just are unsure about what’s happening and want to keep themselves safe.
If you’re worried about those around you, remove your dog from the situation until they calm down and then try again. It requires patience, but it’s a worthwhile way to teach your dog.
Creating Social Time
Along with watching them while they play, you also need to create social time for your dog. This could be setting up a doggy playdate with a friend’s or neighbour’s dog or bringing your dog to the dog park. This time is for you and your dog to hang out with some other people. It’s also a great time to let your dog socialise and watch their behaviour as they play. If they ever seem stressed or are getting a little snippy with other dogs, calmly call their name and take some time away from the pack to calm down.
Senior Dogs Still Like to Have Fun
They may say an old dog can’t learn new tricks, but they can. It just takes time and patience. So don’t feel overwhelmed if your dog ever seems uneasy or annoyed while trying to get them to meet new people and dogs. With some consideration, your senior dog can gradually get used to having fun with new people and dogs.
Frequent Walks Work
First off, make sure to get your dog outside on a regular basis. Similar to seniors and isolation, senior dogs that don’t socialise enough can gradually get serious behavioural and health issues. They need mental stimulation as much as physical exercise.
Best of all, by taking them outside on walks, they’re getting a mix of physical and mental activity. They’ll also be able to say hello to passing dogs, people and outdoor animals.
Get to the Dog Park
Similarly, if your dog is up for it, it’s a good idea to take them to the dog park. While they won’t be able to play as gleefully as the other dogs around, especially the puppies, they’re more than likely going to show signs of their age.
But if they still don’t seem comfortable with that many dogs, slowly work up to it, which leads into your final means of senior socialisation.
Have Friends Over
Make sure to have friends come over too, along with their dogs, if they have them. It will get your dog used to having other people within their personal space. If they’re not used to it, they’re likely to get defensive. By regularly having others over to your place, you’ll get your dog used to seeing new faces, especially in a place they consider to be their safety zone. That can help towards softening their reactions outside of the house too, as they’ll be more comfortable having other dogs and people approach them.
Socialising Rescue Dogs
Lastly, what do you do when socialising a rescue dog? One of the biggest problems while working on socialisation with a rescue dog is that they already have too many things they’re trying to get used to. This ranges from new sounds, climbing stairs, walking on a leash, hearing and seeing cyclists, and more; especially if they were never raised in a home and are only accustomed to living in the wild.
What you’re most likely going to see is behaviour indicative of discomfort and fear:
• Flattened ears
• Constant bodily licking
• Regular yawning
• Darting and hiding
• Whining
• A tucked tail
• And much more
You need to take your time. Don’t rush your dog into situations where it’s clear they’re uncomfortable. If they’re showing signs of discomfort, let up and give them space. You want to make sure they’re comfortable with whatever it is you want them to do, rather than simply trying to force them into it. While a little pushing can be useful in uncomfortable situations, you should always try to take your time, never pushing them too hard.
Negative Experiences have their Impact
In addition to added fear and stress, your rescue dog might also show signs of aggression when interacting with new people and dogs. It’s not a sign that they’re naturally aggressive. It’s just a sign that they’ve been abused in the past, whether in a home or in the wild, and that they’re putting up a very strict guard. Signs to look for include:
• Lunging on leash
• Snarling and growling at others
• Grimacing at dogs walking nearby
• Excessive barking
Socialising RESCUE DOGS
Don’t rush your dog into uncomfortable situations
Keep socialisation encounters brief
Following every encounter, reward your dog
Slowly increase the amount of their exposure Consider seeking out professional help
If they’re showing the above signs, you should move far slower than if they’re showing apprehension. The problem with aggressive behaviour is that it can cause fear in other people and dogs. It could even lead to them getting bit, as well. Take your time and, most of all, consider seeking out professional help. A professional trainer will be able to work one-on-one with you and your dog, as well as in groups with other dogs and owners, to gradually take care of their behavioural issues.
Socialising your Rescue effectively
Some simple tips to keep in mind, when it comes to socialising your dog, include:
• Keeping socialisation encounters brief, so your dog doesn’t feel overwhelmed. Introduce them to another dog, let them sniff one another, give them positive reinforcement, and then move on.
• Similarly, always keep your interactions positive. Following every encounter, reward your dog, whether it be with praise or a treat. This gradually teaches them that they’re doing something good by interacting positively with another dog or person.
• Work your way up to bigger fish. Not literally, but start your dog off with small, low-stress interactions and move up to larger encounters. For instance, don’t start them off at the dog park. Instead, try to have one-on-one greetings with other dogs and people. This will be less overwhelming for them. Once they start getting used to that, you can begin increasing the amount of their exposure.
Wondering how to socialise your dog?
It all takes time. Don’t rush it! Take it one step at a time. With preparation and patience, you can effectively socialise your dog until they become comfortable meeting new people and dogs.

Designer breeds top the list of dog insurance claims for common illnesses and disorders
If you think designer dogs are healthier, then you may want to think again. New claims data from Petsy reveals that popular designer dog breeds are topping the list for claims, outpacing many purebreds. With many marketed as low-shed and hypoallergenic, these ‘high-end hybrids’ may be trendy, but they’re also triggering some of the most common (and costly) health problems in Aussie households. Read more below.
Our loved pooches may be our best friends but, just like us, they can be susceptible to a range of health issues that can impact their quality of life. Now, new data based on pet insurance claims has revealed the most claimed conditions affecting household dogs, helping pet owners spot potential problems early.
Petsy, one of Australia’s leading pet insurance providers, has released its own claims data, identifying the top nine most common dog illnesses and disorders, the breeds with the highest number of claims for each condition, and the average age of the canine when the claim is made.
Petsy found that the top three most claimed illnesses are frequently seen among designer breeds. For instance, the number one condition: gastro-intestinal and digestive system disorders – is among Cockapoos (a Cocker Spaniel-Poodle cross breed), impacting them at the average age of 2.4 years.
Skin disorders are especially common among Tamaruke Miniatures (a cross-breed Labrador or Poodle with smaller breeds like Miniature Poodle, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel or Dachshund), affecting them at an average age of 2.6 years. This designer mix is often marketed as having a non-shedding, hypo-allergenic coat, however the ‘Poodle’ in these breeds, and their dense curly non-shed coats, may make them more susceptible to skin irritations and sensitivities. (1)
Sheepadoodles (Old English Sheepdog-Poodle crosses) top Petsy’s list for ear disorders, typically experiencing issues around 2.2 years. Their floppy ears create closed, warm and humid ear canals that can encourage bacterial and yeast infections.
Fourth on the list are leg, hip, and shoulder disorders, which are most often seen in Australian Cattle Dogs and Blue Heeler crosses in Petsy’s data, with cases emerging at an average age of 3.2 years. It’s no wonder, with these working breeds requiring lots of physical exercise, putting them at risk of joint wear and tear.
Pure breeds start making an appearance halfway down the list of most claimed illnesses and disorders. Eye disorders are most claimed in British (English) Bulldogs, at an average 3.1 years of age. With their flat facial structure, this breed often suffers from inward-turning eyelids, cherry eye (2) and dry eye, which can cause irritation and vision problems.
Paw injuries appear most frequently for White Swiss Shepherd Dogs, at an average 2.9 years. This powerful, medium to large breed of dog has an active lifestyle, which may contribute to paw-pad injuries such as embedded grass seeds, torn nails and cysts.
Tumours, warts, cysts, growths and abscesses rank highest among Saint Bernards, leading to insurance claims when the dog is, on average, 4.6 years – the oldest average age in Petsy’s list. This is likely due to their large size and predisposition to bone cancer and lymphoma (3). Their heavy skin folds may contribute to the formation of cysts and abscesses.
Respiratory system disorders are seen more in Pomeranians, usually surfacing at 2.8 years. Toy breeds with short muzzles can be prone to tracheal (windpipe) collapse that can cause coughing and wheezing (4).
Rounding out the list are urinary system disorders, with Hungarian Vizslas the most frequently affected, appearing at an average of 2.4 years of age. This breed has a predisposition to bladder and kidney issues such as urinary stones and urinary tract infections.
Monica Limanto, Founder of Petsy, says: “We Australians love our pets as part of family. Of the two-thirds of households that own a pet, half own a dog (5), and 14 per cent of household spending goes towards vet services (6).
“Before choosing a designer, cross or pure breed, you should know how to care for it, and it’s important to understand the potential health issues the breed could encounter. Some breeds are more at risk of common illnesses or disorders, so regular vet check-ups for preventative care and to detect any early symptoms are essential to ensure they live long, high-quality lives.
“Owners can easily take proactive steps to manage their dog’s health and wellbeing. Medical treatments for chronic illnesses and disorders can be costly, which is why it is important to take out pet insurance before any health issues arise, so that owners don’t have to worry about unexpected vet bills.”
Monica shares her 7 tips for looking after your dog:
1. Regular vet check-ups
Take your dog to the vet at least once a year to check for any emerging diseases, parasites and to ensure they are up to date on their vaccines, worming and preventative care. Puppies, older dogs and those with chronic health issues might require more regular visits.
2. Wash and groom your dog every 6-12 weeks
Depending on the breed, your dog will benefit from a DIY or professional clean and groom every 6-12 weeks to keep its skin and fur healthy, reduce shedding and matting to prevent possible skin infections. It’s a good idea to brush long-haired dogs a few times a week.
3. Ensure your dog exercises every day
Exercise, such as regular walks and play sessions, prevents obesity and is important for a dog’s heart health. However, different breeds require different levels of exercise. When choosing a breed, make sure you’re aware of how much exercise it will need. While small breeds, such as a Dachshund, only require 30-60 minutes of low intensity exercise per day 7, a high-energy breed such as a Border Collie or Afghan Hound needs at least 2 hours of exercise a day.
4. Maintain a Healthy Diet
Dogs require a healthy and balanced diet with high-protein sources to support the growth and maintenance of their muscles and organs. Make sure that all their necessary vitamins and minerals are included in their daily meals. One to two meals a day is adequate for adult dogs, while puppies usually need three to four meals.
5. Know what isn’t good for your dog
Most owners know chocolate is toxic to dogs, but did you know they also can’t have macadamia nuts, grapes, raisins, onions and garlic? Make sure all dangerous foods are out of reach to keep your dog healthy. This includes cooked bones, which can splinter and cause internal injuries.
6. Monitor any unusual behaviour
Dogs tend to know when something is wrong. If they start sleeping more, lose their appetite, stop drinking water or have excessive thirst, start vomiting, or have diarrhoea, organise a visit to the vet as soon as possible.
7. Take out pet insurance early
Having insurance for your dog early in its life helps to cover unexpected illnesses or accidents, giving you peace of mind and helping you afford necessary medical treatment. Make sure to review the policy details, including any exclusions or waiting periods, so you’re well-prepared for future vet expenses.
