The English Toy Terrier has a short, shiny black coat set off by trimmings of rich redbrown. The breed apparently hasn’t changed much since the 1900s and is recognised by its ‘candle flame’-shaped ears. It is quick of eye, keen of hearing, brave and courageous.

Chairman's REPORT
Dear Members,
I would like to extend my sincere congratulations to the Public Relations Committee, chaired by Angus McIlraith, and to our dedicated DOGS NSW staff: Kerry Christofi, Abby Davis, Kate Davidson, as well as our hardworking Grounds Team led by Chris Gedzyk and Fredy Icao, and the entire Office Staff. Your commitment and extra efforts, even while unwell, were instrumental in the outstanding success of the Canine Sports Spectacular. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with many members of the public already asking when the next event will be held. Please go to the following link to view a copy of a letter from Ms Tanya Davies MP, State Member for Badgerys Creek, providing positive feedback on the event: rebrand.ly/kyyacqa
DOGS NSW commends Shellharbour City Council on the sensible and balanced outcome achieved in the adoption of its “Keeping of Animals in Residential Areas” Policy. In particular, Section 7.6 of the Policy reflects a practical approach that supports responsible pet ownership. Well done to Brad Wenzel, Tiarne Perkis and their local team of DOGS NSW members, who actively contributed and accompanied DOGS NSW President, Lyn Brand and Vice President, Sharon Hannigan, who attended the Council meeting. Their presence and advocacy no doubt played a key role in helping Councillors arrive at this common-sense decision. A copy of the Policy is available for reference at this link: rebrand.ly/d13a90
The Policy can also be viewed on the Council’s website, but the link was not available at the time of producing this edition.
We look forward to the Fast N Furious Event taking place on 17 May 2025; an exciting addition to our calendar that promises to be a spectacular display of energy and skill.
Congratulations are also due to all the winners, Stewards, and Judges involved in another successful AdvanceTM Sydney Royal Dog Show. This year marked a milestone with the introduction of the first FCI Show at our Royal. Special thanks to Director John Bryson for initiating this innovative format, which provided the opportunity for two sets of awards in one show - a fantastic achievement.
Kind Regards
Lyn Brand DOGS NSW President
Her Excellency The Honourable Margaret Beazley AO KC, Governor of New South Wales
Few DOGS NSW members have achieved the membership longevity that Vicki Etherington OAM has reached this year. Vicki first joined DOGS NSW at the tender age of 11 years, so this year marks an incredible 66 years of membership. As Vicki as contributed so much to dogs and DOGS NSW throughout her career and hobby, this edition of DOGS NSW magazine has featured a celebration of Vicki’s achievements, highlighting her dedication and passion for dogs. The feature commences on page 21.
In addition to Vicki, we also acknowledge the work of two other members, Sue and John Causer, and their dedication to the Robertson Agricultural Show Society. Their 35 years of work was honoured, with both of them receiving life memberships of the Show Society, presented by the Society’s President Sharon Makin, at the Championship Show on 15 March 2025. To read more, please turn to page 9.
Sadly, we have lost two great veterans of DOGS NSW, Graeme Field and also George Bartolo OAM. Both will be sorely missed by members and their families. Graeme’s vale appears on page 8, written by Judy Van Der Vegt. George’s vale appears on page 10, written by DOGS NSW Director and friend, Kyle Charnock.
Royal Canin have kindly submitted an interesting article on the ‘Three Common Questions about Milk Replacers’ which appears on page 26.
The spotlight feature breed this month is the English Toy Terrier, an alert, faithful and intelligent companion that is fast-maturing, mentally and physically. It is quick of eye, keen of hearing, brave and courageous. A completely dependable watchdog, the English Toy Terrier is rather suspicious of strangers, giving warning of any unusual noise or visitors. The feature commemnces on page 16.
Marchs’ Competition to win ‘Potty BuddyTM’ washable pads was won by Tracey Hobson, Sarah Elliot, Jenny Moore and Tamara Hargraves. Congratulations!
For those members who have reached their 25, 50 and 60 year membership status, we would like to acknowledge these members and thank them for their continuing support of our organisation with a badge and certificate. Please see the recent recipients below.

Vale: Graeme Field
1937 – 2024
Many of you reading this will remember Graeme Field. Graeme passed away peacefully on Christmas Day 2024.
Graeme was a life member of Albury & Border Kennel Club but prior to moving to Albury in the late 1970s, Graeme was an active member of the dog scene in Sydney. Graeme started his interest in dog sports at Werriwa Dog Club, and was a member of DOGS NSW for over fifty years. He served on the Obedience and Tracking Trials Committee and also on the Judge’s Training Committee. Graeme had to resign from these when he moved to Albury.
Graeme was a full panel Obedience judge, an Agility Judge, Tracking Judge, Field Trial Judge, Rally and Gundog Judge. Very few people would have that diverse a skill set. Graeme successfully trialled two Labradors to UD, a Beagle to CDX, a Golden Retriever to CDX and an Aussie Shepherd to UD. He also successfully trialled in Retrieving trials, Gundog and Obedience trials, Tracking and Rally. In addition, Graeme helped his wife Sam train her Irish Setters.
Graeme gained so many titles and ribbons that there are too many to mention. He was a wealth of information, which he happily shared with all those he met.
Graeme was instrumental in introducing positive reinforcement to not only Albury Club but to many other clubs in the regional areas. He mentored many people through the NSW Canine Council Instructor’s Certificate, thus ensuring that his club had qualified instructors available to help general dog owners.
Graeme was President of Albury & Border Kennel Club from 1987 to 1989, and then became Chief Instructor in 1990. He designed and ran many instructor’s courses, building the pool of available instructors at his club. He was also instrumental in introducing both Agility and Rally to Albury.
On the more physical side Graeme helped with the building of amenities, designed the curriculum, judged at numerous trials, and basically instructed every week. He helped hundreds, if not thousands, of people train their dogs to become good citizens and, for many, to become titled dogs in the sporting arena.
You are sadly missed Graeme, not only by your wife Samantha and your family, but by all those who knew you. Rest in Peace.

Honouring a Lifetime of Dedication &Passion Sue
& John Cause r
John and Sue Causer have managed the Roberston Agricultural Show Society Dogs section for longer than most people can remember. However, after 35 years they have decided that it is time to introduce new people to ensure that the show continues to go on. Their work was honoured, with both of them receiving life memberships of the Show Society, presented by the Society’s President Sharon Makin, at the Championship Dog Show on 15 March 2025. In addition, their work was also honoured at a function at the Robertson Public House and kitchen on the 12 March 2025.
Kyle Charnock (Director for the Illawarra & South East Region) represented DOGS NSW and said, “We are celebrating two truly incredible people - John and Sue Causer. We’re not just saying goodbye to their official roles in the Robertson Agricultural Show Society, we’re honouring a lifetime of dedication, hard work, and passion for the dog world and the Robertson community.”
John and Sue’s journey started many years ago with a simple, yet life-changing gift, a Border Collie puppy, which was a Christmas gift from Sue to John. From that moment, their love for dogs grew into something truly special. They became breeders, exhibitors, mentors, and above all, champions of the sport and its people. At one stage John held the Guinness World Record for the largest number of dogs being walked together. He started with 30 dogs, but the final number that completed the course was 24. The current record was established in Korea in 2024 of 38 dogs.
In 1991, when they were approached by Mr Mal Brewster about bringing a dog show to the Robertson Show, they didn’t hesitate. They jumped in, became members of the Show Society, and took on the challenge. Their first Open Show in 1992 had 430 entries, and since then they’ve built the event into an amazing Championship Dog Show with over 16,100 entries across the years. That’s a huge achievement and a testament to their dedication. But John and Sue didn’t stop there. They’ve been involved in so many aspects of the dog world, whether it was running shows for the Southern Highlands Kennel Club for 10 years, serving as Secretary and Treasurer for the Children’s Cancer Charity Committee for over a decade, or dedicating time to the Albion Park Kennel Club since 2014, where John has served as Treasurer.
Beyond their committee work, they’ve also been strong advocates for charity, using their love for dogs to give back to the community. Their work with Ronald McDonald House and the Children’s Cancer Welfare Services has made a real difference in the lives of many families.
John and Sue, your passion and dedication have shaped this community in ways that words can’t fully express. Your kindness, commitment and willingness to help anyone in need have left a lasting legacy, not just here in Robertson, but across the entire dog world.
John and Sue continue to be heavily involved in the dog world through their work with Albion Park Kennel Club, Children’s Cancer Welfare Society and Earthdog.
Your influence, wisdom and friendship will always be part of this event and this community, and they would like to thank everyone that they have met along the way.
So, on behalf of everyone thank you. Thank you for the years of hard work, for the memories, for the laughs and for everything you’ve done to make this sport and this community better. We wish you all the best in whatever comes next, but don’t think for a second that we’ll let you disappear completely!

Vale: George Bartolo OAM
A Lifetime of Dedication to Obedience & Dog Training
George Bartolo joined the Illawarra Dog Training Club in 1972 with his first Labrador, Princess (POIRUA HEARE MAI UD). It didn’t take long for George to become deeply involved in the sport of Obedience trialling. Princess achieved her CD title in just four outings and went on to earn her UD title, competing successfully in both Open and UD levels.
Throughout his time with the Club, George has been a pillar of commitment and leadership. He has served in multiple key roles, including President, Chief Instructor, and Trial Manager over the years. In recognition of his outstanding service, he was awarded Life Membership in 1986 George was widely respected for his deep knowledge, generous spirit, and unwavering commitment to the dog training community.
George’s passion for Labradors led him to train four more exceptional dogs: Scar, Pal, Jack and Zak. All attained their UD titles, with Scar and Pal also earning Agility Dog (AD) titles. Several of his dogs successfully competed in All Age Stakes in Non-Slip Retrieving Trials. In total, George has trained five UD titled Labradors:
• Poirua Heare Mai UD. – ‘Princess’
• Wishmore Palidin UD. AD. – ‘Pal’
• Mosta Count Rogger UD – ‘Scar’
• Tarport Black Jack UD. AD. – ‘Jack’
• Warragulli Bangor CDX. – ‘Major’
• Labraddell Black Charm UD. – ‘Zak’ (title attained May 12, 2018).
Zak gained two qualifications to her UDX title, but sadly she passed away prior to achieving her 3rd qualification for her UDX title.
George’s competitive achievements were outstanding. He twice won gold in Open with ‘Pal’ at the NSW State Obedience Titles, along with silver and bronze medals in UD with ‘Scar’, and a silver medal in UD with ‘Jack’. In 1987, he won the Open Stake at the Queensland State Obedience Titles and placed second in Open with ‘Pal’ and second in Novice with Major at the National Titles held in Queensland that same year.
Beyond competing, George made a significant impact as an Obedience Judge. He began judging in 1992 as a Novice Judge, became an Open Judge in 1994, and reached Full Panel status in 2001. He judged across all levels of Obedience, including Rally-O, and was frequently invited to judge at the NSW State Obedience Titles in Brisbane, He also judged the 2010 Labrador Retriever National Trial.
Since November 2001, George has served as a member of the DOGS NSW Obedience, Tracking & Performance Disciplines Judges Committee, contributing his experience and knowledge to the development of aspiring Obedience Judges in NSW.
George was a long-standing member of the Illawarra Dog Training Club, Committee member, Vice President of the Labrador Retriever Club of NSW and Southern Gundog Society, further demonstrating his lifelong dedication to the breed and the sport.
In addition to his club contributions and judging, George operated a successful dog training business for nearly 35 years. He mentored countless handlers and left a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of learning from him.
George Bartolo was more than a competitor and judge, he was a mentor, a club stalwart and a dear friend. His wisdom, warmth and unwavering passion for dog training will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

DOGS NSW Canine Sports Spectacular .... a resounding success!
The inaugural DOGS NSW Canine Sports Spectacular was a landmark event, aimed at increasing public engagement, promoting membership growth and fostering enthusiasm for various canine activities. The event was meticulously planned and executed with the support of the DOGS NSW Public Relations Committee plus a wonderful team of DOGS NSW Affiliated Clubs, Working Parties, Committees and enthusiastic, dedicated volunteers, all working together to ensure the day was a brilliant success.
The event commenced at 10.00am, with Erskine Park Rural Fire Service efficiently managing parking, plus St John Ambulance was on-site for any medical assistance. The official opening was presided over by President Lyn Brand, who introduced the guest of honour, Mr. Mark Rusev, Electoral Officer representing Mrs. Tania Davies MP, State Member for Badgerys Creek. Dr. Robert Zammit presented lucky door prizes and emphasised the importance of canine companionship and engagement in canine sports. Our fabulous MC Lynda Brandt was on hand throughout the day, informing everyone of what was on and where and when events and demonstrations were about to commence.
Channel 7’s Sunrise attended the event, prior to its opening, to promote the day activities, and filmed SprintDogTM and a mini Flyball demonstration with Dr Rob Zammit, along with Kath Purkis, Field Spaniel Club of NSW President, commentating and answering questions about the day. It was great coverage for the event and a wonderful start for the day!
A diverse range of canine sports and activities were then showcased throughout the day, including:
• Agility Demonstrations: Olivia Benson, representing the Agility Committee, co-ordinated two rings for demonstrations and public participation and had wonderful participation.
• Obedience & Basic Training: Louise Patterson engaged the Blacktown Kennel and Training Club to present obedience demonstrations, with over 20 members participating in co-ordinated black and white uniforms.
• Obedience and Rally: Carol Domsalla, along with the Obedience, Tracking & Performance Disciplines Committee presented both Obedience and Rally demonstrations and try-outs on the day, which were enormously popular. They also won the sporting activity of the day!
• Drafting: Sandra Wesselink, from the Sporting Committee, organised a drafting ring, allowing public participation with draft-style dogs.
• Herding Demonstrations: Director Ann Moy transported dogs and ducks for engaging herding demonstrations, with the Herding Working Party successfully guiding ducks through obstacles.
• Earthdog: Convenor Sue Causer led the Earthdog Working Party in practical demonstrations, enabling public participation.
• Scent Work: Angela Sallway orchestrated Scent Work demonstrations at the rotunda, managing long queues of interested participants. This activity also won 2nd place as the sport of the day!
• Sheep Herding: Kathryn Griffith, President of Herding NSW, coordinated sheep herding demonstrations, which were both educational and entertaining.
• SprintDogTM and Lure Coursing Demonstrations: The newly affiliated Fast Paws managed sprint demonstrations and try-outs, a highlight of the event as well as Lure Coursing demonstrations.
• Interactive Retrieving Demonstrations: Rebecca Braid organised interactive Retrieving demonstrations and try-outs in Rings 7 and 8.
• Dances With Dogs & Trick Dog: Loretta Rabbit showcased dancing poodles, and conducted multiple public classes and demonstrations for both sports with her team, keeping the public quite engaged.
• Live TV Coverage: Kath Purkis arranged a live cross to Channel 7 Studios, where Monique Wright and David Woiwood featured Keeshond puppies, thanks to Marilyn and Tracey Parker. This was featured prior to the footage taken of the SprintDogTM and Agility filming where Dr Rob Zammit and Kath were interviewed.
• Breed Parade: Following the official opening, a grand Breed Parade was held, featuring various dog breeds such as Tibetan Spaniels, Pugs, Australian Terriers, Scottish Terriers, Basenjis, German Shepherd Dogs, Alaskan Malamutes, Dobermans and more. The Tibetan Breeds Club of NSW won the prize for the most popular breeds at the parade.
Awards & Prizes
Sponsored prizes were presented at the official opening for the most popular and engaging sporting activities of the day. First place went to Rally, while second place was awarded to Scent Work. Additionally, the Field Spaniel Club of NSW received the award for Best Breed Stand.
Breed Club Participation
Numerous breed clubs actively engaged with the public, showcasing their unique breeds. Participating clubs included: Field Spaniel Club of NSW Inc, The Collie Club of NSW Inc, Australian Kelpie Club of NSW Inc, Bearded Collie Club of NSW Inc, The Doberman Club of NSW Inc, The French Bulldog Club of NSW Inc, German Shepherd Dog League Inc, Newfoundland Club of NSW Inc, Papillon (Dog) Club of NSW Inc and The Tibetan Breeds Club of NSW.

Sponsors and Support
The success of the event was made possible through generous sponsorships, including support from Knose and other key sponsors, including Royal Canin, Blackdog, Vetnex, Marellan Show Ribbons and the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW.
Special appreciation is extended to Mrs. Lynda Brandt, the event MC, for her excellent coordination of the day’s proceedings and also Dr Rob Zammit for his interraction and presentation of the Breed Parade and promotional work throughout the day for the event.
Impact and Future Plans
The event successfully increased public interest and potential membership for DOGS NSW, with over 900 contacts collected via QR check-in. These leads will be used to foster long-term engagement and given the overwhelming positive feedback, the committee is now planning to establish the Canine Sports Spectacular as an annual tradition.
Acknowledgments
This event was a collective effort, and special thanks go to the dedicated DOGS NSW staff including Kerry Christofi, Abby Davis, Kate Davidson, Chris Gedzyk and Fredy Icao as well as committee members Mara Bontempo-Ross, Rebecca Braid, Kath Purkis and Sue McFadden, who also provided exceptional catering. Many thanks to John Maclean, Louise Patterson, Tom Mangan and Lyn Mansfield. Thanks must also go to our wonderful photographers, Jo Meadows and Noeleen Marmont for capturing all of the wonderful moments of the day.
The inaugural DOGS NSW Canine Sports Spectacular was a resounding success, thanks to the dedication of our members, affiliates and volunteers. As we look ahead, we encourage all members to participate and contribute to the growth of our great dog-loving community.

Distinguished Service and Life Membership Awards
These awards exist to recognise the valuable contribution of individuals to the current and future existence of the organisation. In particular, the Awards System, described below, is intended to recognise a wide range of factors, more than simply by being a long-term Member. It also seeks to create awards so that significant contributions to DOGS NSW may be recognised appropriately.
The two Awards available to Members are:
1. Distinguished Service Award
2. Honorary Life Membership
The award of Life Membership is the highest honour that DOGS NSW can bestow on an individual. It is conferred on those who have made an exceptional contribution to the existence and advancement of the organisation. The aim is to make life membership hard to obtain so that it is respected by members and valued by recipients
PROCEDURE
Members wishing to nominate a fellow Member for either Award may apply to the Office for the appropriate Nomination Form.
Each form must be completed by two Members, in good standing and lodged with the Office prior to the advertised closing date for nominations. All nominations are to be treated in the strictest confidence.
Nominations will be referred to the Honours Working Party for due consideration to be followed by the Working Party’s recommendations to the Board of Directors.
AWARD CRITERIA
1. Distinguished Service Award
The
for a minimum period of 15 years.

The Nominee must have demonstrated significant, sustained and high quality service enhancing the reputation and future of the overall organisation particularly to the administration, development and promotion of the canine world.
Exceptional Criteria
Should a member lack the membership precondition, but it can be demonstrated that the member has provided outstanding and meritorious services to DOGS NSW, then a nomination may well be warranted.
NOTE:
The members of the Honours Working Party are of the view that should a nomination not be successful, further nominations for that nominee should not be considered for a minimum period of three years.

English Toy Terrier
History
The English Toy Terrier can be traced back through the centuries, having been bred from the Manchester Terrier, which was previously known as the English Black and Tan Terrier. Dr Caius mentioned the Black and Tan Terrier in 1570 when writing to a friend, and Dogs: Their History and Development, published in 1927, mentioned that the Black and Tan Terrier was described in The Hours of the Virgin in approximately 1500. The English Toy Terrier has had a chequered career, being used for rodent control in earlier times. It was likely found onboard ships and on farms, and was later used for sport.
In Australia the breed was quite popular around the 1960s, though it faded in popularity over time until the 1990s when there were only two breeding pairs left in the country. Since then a concerted effort has been made to boost the gene pool. Several key sires with links to Australia’s standard have been imported, which has vastly improved temperament, conformation and acceptance of the breed. Care has been taken to adhere to the correct English Breed Standard, while avoiding extremes in the breed and fashion fads.
Temperament
The English Toy Terrier is a toy dog with terrier-like characteristics and no hint of frailty or weakness. Overall it is a very active dog that has a great zest for life. It is an alert, faithful and intelligent companion that is fast-maturing, mentally and physically. It is quick of eye, keen of hearing, brave and courageous. A completely dependable watchdog, the English Toy Terrier is rather suspicious of strangers, giving warning of any unusual noise or visitors.
Appearance
The English Toy Terrier has a short, shiny black coat set off by trimmings of rich red-brown. So much attention has been paid to colour and markings that the breed apparently hasn’t changed much since the 1900s and is recognised by its ‘candle flame’-shaped ears. English Toy Terriers are 25 to 30cm at the shoulder, with terrier characteristics. Its long, slightly arched neck leads to a narrow and deep chest. It is slightly rounded over the loin.
Health
The English Toy Terrier is relatively free from health issues and its average lifespan is 9–13 years. Dr Rob Zammit BVSc cautions that slipping kneecaps and poor hip joints can occur in English Toy Terriers. When buying a puppy, check that the parents don’t suffer from these problems.
Maintenance
The English Toy Terrier is easy to care for and requires bathing only when really necessary. It has a very short, singlecoat so very little brushing is required. A damp cloth will rejuvenate the gloss and sheen.

Suitability
his breed is suitable for both the elderly and young active families, as it requires very little exercise. Although a daily walk will benefit both owner and dog, it is quite active and catlike, with a tendency to exercise itself. Being a small dog it makes a good flat-dweller if space is restricted. Over the years people have tended to mollycoddle this breed; however, bearing in mind its origin as a rat hunter, it really is a terrier in a toy’s body.
The English Toy Terrier makes a great companion dog and just needs to be with you. It is not a dog to be left in the backyard and forgotten.

THREE COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT MILK REPLACERS
1.
“Should a milk replacer be part of my maternity toolkit?”
There are several reasons why milk-replacers may become necessary, either as a ‘top-up’ or as the sole source of nutrition. As you know, some first-time mothers may struggle with their maternal instincts. Alternatively, the bitch may be unwell or unable to produce enough milk, especially if she has a large litter. Toxic milk syndrome occurs when some puppies in a litter develop diarrhoea or colitis, despite the dam showing no clinical signs of mastitis. Studies suggest this may be linked to subclinical mastitis, which can be detected by examining the milk for increased neutrophils¹.
Even if the bitch appears to be managing well, it is crucial to closely monitor the puppies, as inadequate weight gain can often be the first indicator of a problem, suggesting that additional support is needed. We recommend weighing your puppies daily after birth to track their progress. Recent studies show that any puppy losing more than 4% of its birth weight within the first 48 hours has a significantly higher risk of mortality and may benefit from supplemental feeding¹-³.
Other risk factors for neonatal mortality may include:
• A low birth weight and low Apgar score ²,⁴. If you aren’t currently Apgar scoring your pups it is definitely worth looking up how to do this, as it will really help you to identify any potential weaker puppies so you can offer them immediate additional nutritional support.
• Litter heterogeneity (weight difference between biggest and smallest puppies in a litter) - If a significant weight variation is observed within the litter, it should be considered potentially at risk.
• Puppies from large litters. If the litter size is bigger than is typically expected for that breed, the puppies are more likely to be of low birth weight.² Using supplemental milk replacers from birth in this instance can provide nutritional support for
2.
“All milk replacers are the same.”
A common misconception is that any milk will suffice for newborn puppies. However, canine milk is unique: it’s more energy-dense, is twice as rich in protein, fat, calcium, and phosphorus compared to other species, all of which contribute to healthy growth. Cow and goat milk, being higher in lactose, may be harder for puppies to digest. Human milk replacers should be avoided as they contain starch, which puppies can’t digest during their first few weeks. Homemade formulas are also risky due to the difficulty in replicating the nutritional balance of canine milk and ensuring sterility.
Energy (kcal/L)
Proteins (g/Mcal)
Calcium (g/Mcal)
Phosphorus (g/Mcal)
Lactose (g/Mcal)
Osmolality, the osmotic pressure from dissolved particles, is crucial in milk replacers. If a milk replacer has high osmolality, it can lead to osmotic diarrhoea, a serious condition for newborn puppies who are 84% water⁵. Ensuring the milk replacer has the right osmolality is essential, and formulas designed specifically for puppies are made with this in mind.
While there are many milk replacers available, not all may meet the puppies’ nutritional needs. Some formulas contain beneficial components like DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), prebiotics, and maltodextrin, supporting cognitive development, digestive function, immune health, and overall growth. The bitch’s ability to produce DHA during lactation is limited¹, so supplementing newborn puppies with DHA has been shown to aid in the development of cognitive and ocular functions. Some milk formulas contain prebiotics, like fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS), which help promote digestive health and contribute to immune system development by supporting a healthy balance of microbiota.
When using a milk replacer, always remember to check the puppy’s body temperature first. Newborn puppies have a limited ability to regulate their body temperature, and if they are too cold, their digestive system won’t function properly. Ensure that the environment is warm, and if the puppy is cold, gently warm before feeding.
Reconstitution errors are the most common issue when preparing powder-based milk replacers. Follow the manufacturer’s water-topowder ratio, as more is not always better. Mixing with other milk types, such as goat’s milk, may alter osmolality and cause digestive issues. Don’t forget to stimulate the puppy to urinate and defecate after feeding.
Figure 1. Average composition of dog, cow and goat milk¹
3. “Diarrhoea during weaning is only of viral or bacterial origin.”
Diarrhoea can slow growth rates and increase the risk of mortality⁶, as gastrointestinal issues are a leading cause of death in puppies under one year of age⁷. But diarrhoea during weaning isn’t always caused by viral or bacterial infections. At this stage, puppies are still developing their digestive systems: they lose the ability to digest milk but haven’t fully adapted to digesting starch. Environmental factors such as stress, high temperatures, or excessive humidity, as well as changes in diet, can contribute to diarrhoea during weaning. It’s also important to consider that certain parasites, like coccidia and Giardia, can also be implicated.
At weaning, which typically begins around 4 to 4.5 weeks of age, it’s important to ensure a smooth transition from milk to solid food. If kibble is introduced, it should be rehydrated in the first few weeks to make it easier for puppies to eat and digest. Using a canine milk replacer instead of water during the first week can help ease this process.
During weaning, puppies’ digestive systems are still immature and more fragile than in adults. Therefore we want the diet to be as digestible as possible. Digestive safety is essential for puppies because puppies are very sensitive to dehydration, a common consequence of diarrhoea.
Avoid free feeding during weaning, as this is a recognised risk factor for weaning diarrhoea. Research has shown that feeding puppies four meals per day during weaning improves stool quality by reducing digestive workload⁸.
For steady and healthy growth, BABYDOG MILK is formulated to closely match the bitch’s milk, with high energy and protein levels. Its unique formula dissolves instantly and completely, leaving no sediment and creating a smooth, homogenous mixture. Enriched with DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid, it aids in brain development and helps an immature immune system. It also has the right amount of lactose and prebiotics for optimal digestion.
OUR STARTER MOTHER & BABYDOG range offers tailored nutritional solutions to support puppies during weaning, from 1 to 2 months of age. Enriched with DHA for brain development and learning, it also contains a blend of prebiotics, and highly digestible proteins to promote a healthy intestinal balance. The formula supports a strong immune system with nutrients including Vitamins E and C. Additionally, the STARTER range meets the high energy needs of the bitch during late pregnancy and lactation.
