‘The Rottweiler is self-reliant, good-natured and devoted to its family, although it can be reserved with strangers. It is an obedient breed that is eager to work, however early socialisation and training are essential. Being a versatile breed, it is suitable for service as a working dog or a family companion, provided it is in the hands of a responsible and caring owner. ’

Dog Sports
Chairman's REPORT
Dear Members,
Dog sports are certainly becoming of great interest to the general public with Scent Work, SprintDog TM and Lure Coursing being discussed amongst members and hopefully encouraging new members to DOGS NSW. These popular sports, as well as many others, will be showcased on Saturday 22 March at the Canine Sports Spectacular from 10.00am to 3.00pm at Orchard Hills.
Upcoming Show Events
We look forward on the Show Scene to the following events:
• The AdvanceTM Sydney Royal Dog Show, held at Sydney Olympic Park, from 11 - 22 April
• The Fast N Furious Show, which is a new innovative show on Saturday 17 May, with entries opening on 7 May at 7.00pm
DOGS NSW Media & Government Legislation Committee & Lobbying Councils
DOGS NSW Media & Government Legislation Committee is dedicated to continuing to lobby for our members in situations, such as the Local Council restrictions on the number of dogs held and also the breeding of dogs and cats in a residential situation.
DOGS NSW has made submissions, as a body, to Hilltop Council, Uralla Council, Shellharbour Council, to educate the Local Councils in the fact that DOGS NSW members have a criteria of ethics to meet, in relation to the keeping of dogs under our DOGS NSW Code of Ethics.
All members are urged to speak to Councillors in their own Council areas and keep up to date on any possible restrictions that they may be considering making. All these government issues, in many instances, the timeline for a response is either very limited or made over the Christmas/New Year period, which impedes a timely response.
Please advise DOGS NSW office or your elected Regional Director of any upcoming concerns that may be on the horizon in Council areas.
The current Legislation that DOGS NSW opposed in many areas, contains the non-negotiable BIN (Breeder Identification Number). In consultation with Government officials, DOGS NSW requested exemption, this was not negotiable and no stakeholder input was sought; the only exemption to this is “Working Dogs” who remain on the property. DOGS NSW opposed the term of a six-month female being included in the number of fertile females, this was not negotiable, DOGS NSW did have success in recommending the upper limit of fertile breeding females from 10-20.
On a reflective note, a sad beginning to 2025 with the loss of two long standing members of our Dog World, Mr John Rowles Mr Ray Barratt and Mrs Lea Rushforth.

MESSAGE
Dear Members,
Congratulations to those members who participated in the DOGS NSW Show Dog, Puppy and Neuter of the Year event, and to the winners. This event was held on Saturday evening, 25 January 2025, and hosted by the DOGS Show Committee. Coverage of the event commences on page 7 with images by Noeleen Marmont Photography.
The following day was the Australia Day Show, presented by DOGS NSW Library & Archives Committee. The day had some fun activities along with special presentations by President Lyn Brand of Distinguished Service Awards to Beverley Daines and Lea Rushforth (posthumously).
Coverage of the Australia Day Show commences on page 10 with photos supplied by Cabal Canine Candids and Noeleen Marmont Photography.
Fast Paws Sydney kicked off the year with its inaugural Fun Day on Saturday 25 January, introducing newcomers and their furry friends to the thrill of the newest sport, SprintDog™. DOGS NSW received many testimonials, not only for the Fun Day itself, but also for Fast Paws for their professional, relaxed and fun attitude. Therefore, a few of these testimonials have been included in the coverage of the day, which commences on page 14. Images by VERO FOJT Photography and Alyssa Loveday.
Kate Davidson recently conducted an interview with veterinarian Dr Rob Zammit BVSC, discussing the History, Importance and Genetic Insights of Dog DNA Testing. The resulting article, now appears on page 22, entitled ‘Unlocking the Power of DNA Testing.’
Dogs never cease to amaze, with their zest for life and their power to affect and inspire humans. This statement was never more true after reading many of the stories behind the rescued, heroic dogs that now appear on page 27. Having been honoured as 2025 Australian Dogs of the Year, these dogs have managed to rise above hardship and rejection and now have found their forever homes whilst continuing to give back to humans as therapy, military and conservation-detection dogs.
Our spotlight breed this month is the Rottweiler, a robust breed of great strength descended from the mastiffs of the Roman legions. A gentle playmate and protector within the family circle, the Rottweiler needs early training and socialisation.
Winner of the January Competition, to win a set of four Action Dog books, was Mr Ernie Starling. Congratulations!

DOGS NSW LIBRARY & ARCHIVES COMMITTEE 2025 CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW
The Library & Archives Committee Australia Day Show started bright and early on a beautiful day. As appropriate, we had a Parade of Australian Breeds with a good rollup of exhibits. The Parade was enthusiastically received by the gallery as a history and characteristic of each breed was read out. Participants received a small memento of the day and we are optimistic that the Parade will grow over time.
Our President Lyn Brand was in attendance to present two Distinguished Service Awards to long time members and contributors to the dog community: Beverley Daines and Lea Rushforth (posthumously). See page 13 for more details.
This was followed by the awarding of prizes for best Australian-themed outfit worn by Gents, Ladies and Judges. It was a fun event enjoyed by spectators and the contestants and also good to see exhibitors and Stewards in the spirit of the day dressing the part as well.
To ensure that we continue our commitment to being a family-friendly pursuit, we added to the Junior Handler program a Tiny Tots class, aimed at encouraging youngsters to the show scene. The kiddies were thrilled to participate and thoroughly enjoyed ‘handling’ their dog and of course receiving a medallion and their bag of goodies.
To top things off for Australia Day – a thong throwing contest - yes, with great Australian prizes, such as Vegemite, Lamingtons and for the really serious – a Lotto ticket! I don’t intend to miss this next year and I hope you don’t either!
Thank you to all our Judges, Stewards, DOGS NSW Representative, our caterer, the photographers and you the exhibitors. A very special thanks to my Committee for all your input and support in making the show a success, and the day, a pleasant experience. Congratulations to all the winners.

Where the Fun Begins .....
Fast Paws Sydney kicked off the year with its first-ever Fun Day on Saturday 25 January, introducing newcomers and their furry friends to the thrill of the sport in a safe and welcoming environment.
From tiny Chihuahuas to majestic Tibetan Mastiffs, dogs of all shapes and sizes joined in the fun, bringing endless entertainment and energy to the day. Whether they were laser-focused on the lure, or joyfully bouncing down the track in their own unique style, every dog made the event unforgettable.
The day brought together a diverse group of attendees, including members of the Field Spaniel Club of NSW, the Newcastle All Breeds Dog Training Club and participants from other dog sports like Flyball.
, We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the incredible helpers who travelled far and wide to support the event. Your enthusiasm and willingness to learn made a world of difference. A special shoutout goes to Tony Maxwell, our phenomenal Lure Driver and Michelle Gurney, our go-to expert for advice and guidance.
As a club, we’re thrilled to share our knowledge and experience to help grow this sport in NSW. The overwhelmingly positive feedback we’ve received has been truly inspiring and we’re so grateful for the amazing support from the community.

Testimonials Received by DOGS NSW
I recently joined DOGS NSW so that my nervous Australian Cattle Dog ‘Shelby’ could participate in upcoming SprintDogTM trials.
We were so excited to hear that Fast Paws NSW was campaigning to run NSW based SprintDogTM events, as we have a very young baby and are unable to travel to the ACT to give ‘Shelby’ an opportunity to explore her love of chasing anything that moves.
We recently participated in the Fast Paws Fun Day at DOGS NSW, Orchard Hills. Being new to the sport this environment was great for our nervous dog. She was given plenty of space and we, as new dog sport Pawrents, were encouraged and supported by all the volunteers at the event.
The event was very well organised and expectations were clearly set with great instruction given during the morning brief. We knew what to do and felt confident in our dog having success at trying out SprintDogTM
Shelby had a wonderful day and loved having a run after the baggy. We are so grateful for the opportunity that Fast Paws NSW gave us by running such a successful, fun day for all! ~ MARYANN HAY
“We attended the fun day for SprintDogTM by Fast Paws and it was such an incredible day. We had so many dogs and people and everyone was lovely and respectful. As a result of this, the day ran smoothly and enjoyably. I am now a DOGS NSW member and looking forward to the upcoming events we are all attending.” ~ Cat Vella
More Testimonials
“The Fast Paws Sydney Inc Fun Day, rescheduled to Saturday 25 January 2025, was an outstanding success with a fabulous entry, with most dogs qualifying for a second run. This is an achievement, given that many dogs have not been exposed to either SprintDogTM, Lure Coursing or Fly Ball.”
“The Committee provided a full explanation of what SprintDogTM is, the rules of the trial, the ground rules, and who to look out for if competitors required assistance (ie the high-vis vests). Participants were keen to make the day a success - and it was. The Committee were extremely well organised, with a welcome gift for the dogs; signage was clear and concise; members that were in the key positions were briefed on requirements. Each position was manned by an experienced Club member, who also provided training and guidance to others who shadowed each position.”
“All in all, a successful day. Competitors left happy, dogs were tired; and everyone looking forward to the first trial of the season in March 2025.” ~ ALLY TURNBULL
“As a volunteer marshal for both NSW SprintDogTM and Fast Paws Sydney Fun Days, I have had the opportunity to observe and compare events across the spectrum, and I can confidently attest to the exceptional quality and organisation of Fast Paws Sydney.”
“The Fast Paws Sydney Committee has demonstrated their commitment to the sport by:
• Acquiring all necessary equipment to run events successfully
• Exhibiting excellent organisational skills in event setup
• Efficiently coordinating volunteers
The events hosted by Fast Paws Sydney have been met with overwhelming positivity:
• Participants, both human and canine, have expressed high satisfaction
• The lure driver’s expertise has led to remarkable performances, with some dogs achieving personal best times, including my own dog, Schipperke ‘Jax’ (pictured above) who broke his personal best from 35kph to 40kph”
• “I strongly believe that DOGS NSW’s endorsement of Fast Paws Sydney for Sprint Dog events this year would be a valuable step in promoting and expanding this exciting new sport. It would allow more people and dogs to enjoy SprintDogTM competitions without the burden of long-distance travel.” ~ ANNA BARBAGALLO
“My name is Seamus and I took my German Shepherd Dog ‘Blue’ to the SprintDogTM Fun Day. Both ‘Blue’ and I thoroughly enjoyed the day and trying a new dog sport was an amazing experience for ‘Blue’.
The Fastpaws Sydney team that organised the day were fantastic and extremely helpful with DOGS NSW so I have all the information on upcoming events, including the Canine Sports Spectacular.”

Mandatory breeder identification
New mandatory breeder identification provisions will apply to anyone breeding dogs, whether regular breeders, occasional breeders or those with accidental litters. This enhances transparency of dog breeding activities across NSW and assists people in acquiring a puppy to know that they are buying from a reputable breeder
From 1 December 2025, anyone breeding dogs will be required to obtain a Breeder Identification Number (BIN), with some exceptions as detailed below. All existing BINs for breeding dogs will be cancelled on 1 December 2025. This means before that date:
• Breeders currently holding a voluntary BIN will be required to re-apply in order to comply with the new arrangements and provide updated details.
• Anyone using a membership number of a recognised dog breeder organisation will need to apply for a BIN, as these will no longer be accepted.
• If a dog becomes pregnant unexpectedly and the person in charge does not have a BIN they must apply for one either within 14 days after becoming aware of the pregnancy or 7 days after the dog gives birth, whichever comes first.
You must be 18 years or over to be a registered dog owner in NSW.
There are exemptions to having to apply for a new BIN, including:
• Farmers breeding working dogs for the purpose of working on the land on which they were bred will be exempt from obtaining a BIN whilst they remain on that land.
• Designated rehoming organisations who have custody of seized or surrendered dogs, and where one of these dogs is already pregnant or becomes pregnant accidentally, their Rehoming Organisation Number – known as a RON, will be accepted in lieu of a BIN.
There are also new rules for rehoming organisations that provide clear directions regarding breeding puppies.
If a designated rehoming organisation intentionally breeds dogs, it must obtain a BIN by 1 December 2025 to comply with the new mandatory identification rules.
The applications for BINs and RONs are administered through the NSW Office of Local Government, with fees applying
New offences for failing to obtain a BIN will apply:
• For individuals - a maximum of 100 penalty units ($11,000), or 6 months imprisonment, or both; and for a corporation, a maximum of 500 penalty units ($55,000).
• Penalty notice offence of $500 for individuals, and $2,500 for a corporation. Reminder to Members that the NSW Legislation, Prevention Of
Lifetime breeding cap for dog litter limits and record keeping
A mandatory lifetime litter cap, setting out the maximum number of pregnancies and types of births will apply to all adult female dogs. Breeders will also be required to keep records of all births.
From 1 December 2025 a dog is limited to a maximum delivery of 5 litters or up to 3 caesareans litters, whichever comes first. Veterinary approval must be obtained before a dog becomes pregnant for a third time, if that dog has had two previous caesarean deliveries. The approval should certify that another birth will not pose a significant risk to the dog's health, and the existing maximum litter limit will still apply.
Written records must be made by breeders within 14 days of delivery and kept for three years in order to show on request. The records must specify:
• date of delivery
• mode of delivery - whether caesarean or other
• a copy of the veterinary certificate if veterinary approval was required
• the details of the veterinarian who performed the caesarean if it was required.
Reminder to Members that the NSW Legislation, Prevention Of Cruelty to Animals, Timelines and Requirements are as
New offences for breaching lifetime litter limits:
• For individuals - a maximum of 1000 penalty units ($11 0,000), or 2 years imprisonment, or both; and for a corporation, a maximum of 5000 penalty units ($550,000).
• Penalty notice offence of $ 1000 for individuals, and $5000 for a corporation.
New offences for breaching record keeping requirements:
• For individuals - a maximum of 100 penalty units ($1000), or 6 months imprisonment, or both; and for a corporation, a maximum of 500 penalty units ($55,000).
• Penalty notice offence of $500 for individuals, and $2,500 for a corporation.
Minimum number of staff for dog breeding premises
Mandatory staffing ratios for dog breeding premises are being brought in to ensure proper and sufficient care for dogs.
From 1 December 2025, a dog premises must have a minimum ratio of one staff member present for every 20 dogs. The person who manages or controls the premises must also ensure each dog receives proper, sufficient care, food and water. This requirement does not require 24 hours a day care, unless there are circumstances where dogs may need additional care and supervision due to illness or under the advice of a veterinary practitioner.
Staff includes people working full-time or part-time, being an employee, a volunteer, an owner or manager, or family member of the owner or manager and must be aged 14 years and over.
For the purposes of the ratio, a dog over 12 weeks is counted as one dog, and a litter of dogs under 12 weeks of age will be counted as one dog, in recognition of the critical role played by the female parent.
The minimum number of staff is to be calculated by dividing the number of dogs at the premises by 20 and rounding up to the nearest whole number. For example, if there are 30 dogs at the dog premises, 30 must be divided by 20, which equals 1.5. 1.5 must then be rounded up to the nearest whole number, which gives a result of 2 staff members.
There is an exemption for dogs being bred for assistance animal purposes if the owner or manager is a member of either the International Guide Dog Federation or an accredited member of Assistance Dogs International.
Reminder to Members that the NSW Legislation, Prevention Of Cruelty to Animals, Timelines and Requirements are as follows
New offences for breaching the staff to animal ratio and proper care requirement will apply:
• For individuals - a maximum of 400 penalty units ($44,000); and for a corporation, a maximum of 2000 penalty units ($220,000).
• Penalty notice offence of $ 1000 for individuals, and $5,000 for a corporation.
Sale or transfer of dogs
Requirements to provide identification numbers for the sale or transfer of dogs will be changing.
From 1 December 2025, any advertisement for the sale or transfer of dogs born after 1 December 2025 must include the animal’s microchip number and the breeder’s identification number, or in the case of a rehoming organisation where the identity of the breeder is not known, a rehoming organisation number. In circumstances where an advertisement is not made, this information must be provided to the pu rchaser before or at the time of sale.
For dogs born before 1 December 2025 For dogs born from 1 December 2025
• dog microchip number, or
• a relevant breeder identification number, or
• rehoming organisation number allocated under the Companion Animals Act 1998
• a microchip number, and
• the breeder identification number allocated under the Companion Animals Act 1998, or
• a rehoming organisation number allocated under the Companion Animals Act 1998

There are some exceptions to these new arrangements:
• If a dog being sold or transferred is 6 months of age or older and the relevant identification and registration information required under the Companion Animals Act 1998 has been recorded in the NSW Pet Registry, the dog’s microchip number is sufficient.
• If a dog being advertised is 8 weeks of age or younger and it is not microchipped, the microchip of the female parent must be displayed and be clearly identified as the female parent. It is important to note that any dog must not be re-homed (sold or transferred) before they are over 8 weeks of age.
• If the dog being sold is a retired greyhound, the greyhound racing industry participant number allocated under the Greyhound Racing Act 2017 may be used in lieu of a breeder identifi cation number, however requirements for the animal’s microchip number still apply.
Reminder to Members that the NSW Legislation, Prevention Of Cruelty to Animals, Timelines and Requirements are as follows
New offences for breaching the requirements to provide identification during sale or transfer of dogs will apply:
• For individuals - a maximum of 150 penalty units ($16,500), or 6 months imprisonment; and for a corporation, a maximum of 750 penalty units ($82,500).
• Penalty notice offence of $ 1000 for individuals, and $5,000 for a corporation.
Animal Welfare Code of Practice – Breeding Dogs and Cats
It will become mandatory for all dog breeders to comply with the Animal Welfare Code of Practice – Breeding Dogs and Cats (Breeding Code) to ensure improved animal welfare outcomes for dogs in NSW.
From 1 December 2029, mandatory compliance will be required for all dog breeders, regardless of whether the breeding was intentional or otherwise, with the Breeding Code. Any person breeding dogs is also required to take steps to ensure all staff members comply with the Breeding Code of Practice, or relevant provisions of the Breeding Code for persons breeding dogs.
The Government will consult with stakeholders on the Breeding Code and make any necessary amendments prior to being mandated, to ensure it is fit for purpose for all breeders.
It is important to note that the current requirement to comply with the Breeding Code continues to apply for those businesses who breed dogs, or cats, for fee or reward.
New offences for breaching the requirements to comply with the Breeding Code will apply:
• For individuals - a maximum of 50 penalty units ($5,500), or 6 months imprisonment; and for a corporation, a maximum of 200 penalty units ($22,000).
• Penalty notice offence of $ 500 for individuals, and $1,500 for a corporation.

Rottweiler
History
History indicates the Rottweiler is likely to have descended from the ancient Roman drover dogs. Roman armies used drover dogs to move cattle; live meat would last longer than carcasses, so this breed was used to guard and drove the cattle while the soldiers marched.
Around 700 AD, the town of Rottweil in Germany was established and the drover’s dog was bred with the local dogs. The most desirable were kept for qualities like strength, endurance and intelligence, and thus the Rottweiler Metzgerhund, or butchers’ dog, was established. These dogs were used to pull carts for the butchers and to carry the money in satchels around the neck.
The Rottweiler met rather hard times when the driving of cattle was outlawed and its role in pulling carts was replaced by donkeys and the railroad. It soon found new roles; between 1901 and 1907, the Rottweiler was used as a police dog and in 1921, the Allgemeiner Deutsche Rottweiler Klub was formed in Germany to safeguard the Rottweiler’s future
Appearance
Classed as a medium to large dog, the Rottweiler is correctly proportioned, compact, powerful and noble. It is black in colour with clearly defined markings of rich tan on checks, muzzle, throat, chest, legs and also over both eyes and at the base of the tail. The male is measured between 61 and 68cm at the withers and the female is 58 to 56cm at the withers.
Temperament
The Rottweiler is self-reliant, good-natured and devoted to its family, although it can be reserved with strangers. It is an obedient breed that is eager to work, but it does not need to be trained to guard, as this is a natural instinct. The size and strength of the Rottweiler will cause problems if you do not establish yourself as the ‘pack leader’ in the household when the dog is young.
Early training and socialisation are also essential for a Rottweiler. All experiences should be positive, but firm and consistent behaviour will earn this breed’s respect.
Suitability
Overall, it is a wonderful breed that craves companionship; a Rottweiler will be happy as long as it is with you, whether that means laying on the couch or running a marathon. It is a very versatile breed that is suitable for service as a working dog or as a family companion. Provided it is in the hands of a responsible and caring owner, it is well suited to all types of family life. Due to its strength and size, this breed must always be supervised with young children.
Health
This breed can suffer from hip and elbow dysplasia, and responsible breeders are working to ensure this problem is under control. Both hip and elbow dysplasia can be partly inherited and partly environmental in cause. Responsible breeders always ensure owners understand their responsibility in the careful growing of the puppy. The National Rottweiler Council of Australia ensures that all state club members have their breeding stock’s hips and elbows scored, and that they obtain clear certificates for eye and mouth disease.
The Rottweiler generally has a lifespan between 10 and 12 years.

Unlocking the Power of Dog DNA Testing : History,
Importance and Genetic Insight s
An Interview Dr Rob Zammit BVSc ~ Written by Kate Davidson
The field of dog DNA testing has become an invaluable tool for pet owners, breeders, and veterinarians. It offers insights into breed identification, hereditary diseases, and the genetic makeup of dogs, revolutionizing animal care and breeding practices. Below, we explore the history of dog DNA testing, its significance, and the crucial genetic issues it can help address.
The History of Dog DNA Testing
Dog DNA testing began gaining traction in the late 1990s and early 2000s, coinciding with advancements in genetic research and the completion of the Human Genome Project. Early efforts focused on identifying single-gene disorders in specific breeds, with copper toxicosis in Bedlington Terriers being one of the first hereditary diseases mapped to a specific genetic mutation.
Through collaboration between breeders, veterinarians, and researchers, the DNA responsible for copper toxicosis was identified as an incomplete dominant gene. This breakthrough enabled targeted breeding programs that gradually reduced the prevalence of the condition. Since then, genetic testing has expanded to encompass hundreds of breeds and a wide array of genetic traits, from health risks to physical characteristics.
The introduction of consumer-grade DNA tests in the 2010s brought this technology to everyday pet owners, offering breed identification and health screening through simple cheek swabs. Today, DNA testing is a global industry, with laboratories in the United States, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand offering specialised services.
Why Dog DNA Testing is Important
1. Improving Canine Health
DNA testing helps identify genetic predispositions to diseases, enabling proactive care. Breeders can use this information to select mates that minimise the risk of passing on hereditary disorders. For example, knowing whether a dog is a carrier of conditions like hip dysplasia or progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) allows for informed breeding decisions.
2. Ensuring Breed Integrity
DNA testing can confirm parentage and breed purity, a vital step for breeders to maintain accurate records and avoid accident crossbreeding. In regions like Queensland, progeny DNA testing is mandatory, ensuring that puppies are correctly matched to their sires and dams.
3. Ethical Breeding Practices
Open registries and genetic transparency help eliminate hereditary diseases over generations. Testing ensures that carriers of recessive diseases are not unknowingly bred with other carriers, thereby reducing the prevalence of genetic disorders.
4. Personalised Care for Pet Owners
For pet owners, understanding their dog’s genetic risks allows for tailored veterinary care, dietary adjustments and lifestyle choices that enhance the dog’s quality of life.
Genetic Issues & DNA Markers
Dog DNA testing identifies a variety of genetic markers associated with diseases, traits, and other hereditary conditions.
Common Genetic Issues Identified by DNA Testing
1. Copper Toxicosis (e.g., in Bedlington Terriers): A liver disease caused by the inability to process copper, linked to an incomplete dominant gene.
2. Hip Dysplasia: A polygenic disorder causing joint problems, common in large breeds like German Shepherds.
3. Eye Conditions: Cataracts, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), and other inherited eye diseases are identifiable through genetic testing.
4. Cardiomyopathies: Disorders affecting heart muscles, such as dilated cardiomyopathy, are common in breeds like Dobermans.
5. Degenerative Myelopathy: A progressive spinal cord disease similar to ALS in humans, commonly found in German Shepherds and other breeds.
Understanding DNA Markers
DNA markers are specific sequences within a dog’s genome associated with particular traits or diseases. By comparing a dog’s genetic data to known markers, labs can identify whether a dog is:
• Clear: No copies of the mutation.
• Carrier: One copy of the mutation (not affected but may pass it to offspring). A dog can be a carrier and also affected as in the case of incomplete dominance.
• Affected: Two copies of the mutation, likely to develop the associated disease.
The Process of DNA Testing
Dog DNA testing typically involves a simple cheek swab, which collects cells from inside the dog’s mouth. The process includes:
1. Sample Collection: Use sterile swabs to gather DNA, avoiding contamination from human contact.
2. Microchip Verification: Ensure the sample matches the dog’s identity to maintain integrity.
3. Laboratory Analysis: Labs analyse the sample for breed identification, parentage, or specific genetic conditions.
Some conditions may require a blood sample for more precise results. Advanced tests may be sent to specialised labs in the United States, Europe, or Australia.
Challenges & Opportunities in Dog DNA Testing
While dog DNA testing is a powerful tool, its effectiveness depends on the quality and reliability of the laboratories. Mistakes highlight the need for standardised practices and regular cross-verification of results with international labs. DNA testing has the potential to eradicate hereditary diseases in dogs and even inform human genetic research. However, ethical considerations remain. The misuse of DNA editing technology, such as removing traits like fear, raises concerns about unintended consequences and the potential for harm.
Conclusion
Dog DNA testing is a transformative innovation with the potential to eliminate hereditary diseases, improve breeding practices, and enhance veterinary care. From identifying copper toxicosis in Bedlington Terriers to screening for breed-specific conditions, DNA testing has already changed the landscape of canine health. With continued advancements and ethical practices, it holds promise not only for dogs but also for broader genetic research that may benefit all species, including humans.

Starting strong
: how reusable potty pads can set puppies, breeders and new owners up for success ~ by Louise Newman
Is it plausible to think that we can train puppies, as young as 8 weeks of age, to seek out a surface to toilet on? It sure is! Now, imagine if you included that surface in your puppy packs.
Regardless of the style of accommodation: house, terrace, apartment, traditional rooms or open plan you live in – your puppies would have that familiar surface to guide them where to toilet. You can imagine the joy, praise and delight that new owner would feel. Not just for their puppy, but also their gratitude for your, input to make their lives, and adjustment to being puppy owners, significantly easier.
Using potty pads could be one of the easiest and most effective options for toilet training because they provide consistency to aid learning, set clear boundaries, allow for positive reinforcement opportunities, and support your longterm relationship between puppy and owner.
Furthermore, thick reusable potty pads, offer additional benefits, including environmental sustainability, cost-effectiveness, and comfort for puppies.
But as always, the devil is the detail:
• Firstly, they come in a range of colours. I would very much choose blue and yellow pads since these, whilst not designer colours, make it extremely easy for the dog to see and locate.
• Then they have nonslip backs. Given that the fashion is to have a tiled or floorboards in homes. Sliding injuries are a real issue for the puppies.
• They are thick, which is brilliant for absorbency … but also, that they are not going to blow over and flip in the wind, which for me is one of the way puppies find themselves chewing poor alternatives.
• They are tough- the double stitch seems to reduce the effect those puppy sharp teeth can have on blankets towels etc.
• They are washable, so they can be used repeatedly.
• They are good for the pocket, good for sustainability and some are made from recycled material, too.
These reusable pads can start off as a surface on the floor of a whelping pen. The rubber backing means they do not let the cold from the floor come up and they also function as an insulation layer from the heat of the lamps.
Then you can start introducing the bright blue and yellow ones when the pups open their eyes and start exploring more. That way they are not seen as novel or as a toy to be mouthed and tugged.
Many breeders already participate in ENS (Early Neurological Stimulation) and ESI (Early Scent Introduction), and yes, you can use a scent to encourage the pups to investigate a pad and capture toileting to start your reinforcement of using the pads. This is exactly what we do in puppy school, and it has made such a different. Once, where puppies would hold on and not feel confident enough to toilet in class, now they are happy to indicate they need to toilet and know to use the mats!
The scent and standout colours of the mat serve as a clear signal for puppies, encouraging them to toilet in the designated area. This training can easily transition to toileting outside, or in a specific area of the home. Additionally, these reusable pads can be repurposed as protective mats for sofas, car seats or even as lightweight mats to take on walks later down the track.
Start potty pad training early
But truthfully this is working the solution backwards (training a puppy in class to use a potty pad and transferring it to their home). Would it not be simpler if the training happened from the start?
Not all puppies come to puppy school and sadly not all puppy schools offer the same level of quality. Even with the best intentions, many new owners are unprepared for the time and commitment a puppy requires. As we know, puppies demand significant time and attention.
Having disrupted routines means many puppy owners find themselves being pulled in different directions with less time to get things done, which often leads to stress, lack of patience, arguments and tears. Not the stable setting we would wish for anyone – never mind an impressionable puppy.
Now imagine taking one of those stressors away. Mess is a big stressor; you all know the time and energy it takes cleaning up after a litter. We could help this simply by introducing these reusable potty pads in the whelping pen.
However, I would argue that the greatest benefit of training your puppies to seek out a surface for toileting, is that it helps with socialisation. Puppies trained this way are often allowed more freedom within their homes and when visiting others. This increased freedom exposes them to a variety of sounds, smells, surfaces, objects, people (including their sounds, scents and clothing), and other animals.
Pups that have more positive social experiences tend to have a better relationship with people, kids and their owner, as shown by research from Purdue University.
Training a pup is so much more than toilet training.
Supporting new owners by teaching puppies to use a designated toileting area with a quality potty pad, such as the premium and durable Potty Buddy™, can set them up for success and make the transition to their new homes smoother.

Other benefits to dog breeders using reusable potty-training pads are:
• Protection for your floors and carpets – breeders showcasing puppies to potential buyers, maintaining a clean and appealing environment is essential.
• Stress-free solution for pup and owners – pads can serve as a transitional tool for puppies moving into homes with limited outdoor access or during training periods.
• A thoughtful breeder’s choice – by using potty pads, breeders demonstrate their commitment to raising well-socialised, clean and well-cared-for puppies. Also highlighting this practice can enhance a breeder’s reputation among potential buyers and within the breeder community.

Australian Dog of the Year 2025 ELLE, Border Collie, Gold Coast QLD
Nominated Charity Recipient: Deaf Dog Rescue Australia
Elle is a deaf, rescue dog who was abandoned at 8 weeks of age. Despite her challenges, Elle has overcome every obstacle with resilience and an unwavering spirit, She has become a source of comfort and joy for those she meets, providing emotional support to people in need and helping to break down barriers for those who may not fully understand the challenges of living with a deaf dog. Her unique ability to connect with others through her sense of touch, sight and intuition is truly inspiring.
Elle competes in agility and obedience competititons with her human Robyn Adair, and relies on sign language to communicate. She is a school therapy dog and helps children who are anxious or are having a difficult day. She also helps with behaviour management, where children earn reward cards to come and do tricks with Elle. This also helps educate students in how to communicate with her using sign language.
Robyn and Elle work together to teach children about how to approach dogs correctly and to ask the handler if they can pat their dog. Elle is a favourite visitor in the school’s staffroom and office, where she instantly adds smiles and laughs to the room. She knows exactly who needs a fur cuddle and will go straight uo to them and sit at their feet. Elle loves joining in on dress-up days with the children and has a sneaky way of encouraging anyone who walks into her office to play a quick game of ball with ther. Elle is event included in the staff photo!
“Elle’s story exemplifies perseverance and the incredible bond between humans and animals. Her ability to overcome challenges and provide such meaningful support to others is a shining example of why we celebrate dogs through this award. Elle’s journey is a testament to love, resilience and the extraordinary ways animals enrich our lives,” says Awards Founder Kerry Martin.
People’s Choice Awards
DAPHNE, Tibetan Spaniel.Melbourne VIC
Nominated Charity Recipient: Second Chance Animal Rescue
Daphne is a 12 year old former therapy dog who suffered a severe brain injury after being hit by two cars on Boxing Day 2023. She wasn’t expected to survive, let alone walk, see or eat independently again, says her guardian, Michelle Jackel.
But Daphne defied the odds and within a week, she began eating on her own, and within months, she was walking, running, and even jumping! She regained vision in her right eye and maintained her signature sassy, stubborn personality, proving her indomitable spirit.
Before her accident, Daphne was a Pet Therapy dog at Lort Smith Animal Hospital. Michelle hopes they can return to this role, inspiring others with brain injuries and showing that recovery is possible.
“I hope people are inspired by Daphne’s story and are not as quick to lose hope in challenging circumstances, even if the prognosis is grim. And that miracles can happen. Daphne’s head injuries were so severe that we were told she wouldn’t make it through the day. And yet here she is a year later, proving everyone wrong.” he says.
Daphne’s journey continues to give hope to everyone she meets, including her vets and physiotherapists, who now see new possibilities for dogs with severe brain injuries.
Awards Founder Kerry Martin says, “The People’s Choice Award is a celebration of community spirit and love for our incredible dogs. Daphne holds a special place in the hearts of so many, showcasing the power of connection between dogs and their people. Daphne’s story is one of incredible determination and resilience, reminding all that the bond we share with our dogs can inspire hope and healing.
ARAS (All Rescues Are Special) Medal
BEAR, Border Collie X Koolie, Sunshine Coast QLD Nominated Charity Recipient: IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare)
“ A new award in the 2025 Awards - the ARAS (All Rescues Are Special) Medal, is proudly sponsored by The Saltiest Dog. The Medal celebrates incredible rescue dogs and the humans behind them,” says Awards Founder Kerry Martin. “This award goes to Bear, who highlights the power of second chnaces and the extraordinary potential within rescue animals when they are given the love and support they need. I couldn’t have imagined a more fitting inaugural winner. Thank you to The Saltiest Dog for their heartflet support of this special new award in 2025!”
Bear’s original guardians got him as a puppy but soon had to surrender him, as he was a handful. After ongoing issues with several families, Bear’s last guardinas were threatened with eviction from the damages he was creating in the home. The family contacted the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Detection Dogs for Conservation team, who was actively looking for their next detection dag to be trained with finding koalas (in collaboration with IFAW).
Bear found his ‘forever home’ with the director of the Detection Dogs for Conservation, Dr Roamne Cristescu, who said, “Quickly we knew Bear ws ‘the one’, read for the challenge of finding live koalas. While many dogs are able to find loala scats, not many can find live koalas as they are resting high in trees. Now Bear is an integral part of search and rescue efforts to locate koalas suffering from vehicle hits to bushfires to diseases. He has saved over 100 koalas!”
Bear’s work is also important for research into the resilience of koalas after fires. Bear was on the ground during Black Summer. In many areas local koala populations were decimated by the fires, so every animal Bear saved made a difference; many were released back into the wild and some since had joeys. Bear’s work has been featured in documentaries, and he is even in his own called “Bear, Koala Hero”.
Dr Cristescu says Bear’s story is about “the bond between dogs and humans, and how special working together as a team is. Bear went through several families and places where he didn’t fit in, and in the end, he not only has fun, helps koalas, but also has his own movie as a hero! Bear’s story is one of second chances and finding your tribe.”
The Saltiest Dog’s Owner /Founder Kate Opitz says, “I truly believe that the right dog finds us, when both need each other the most. Bear is the perfect example of finding the right place, the right home and the right family at the right time. All rescues are special, and every dog deserves a chance to find the place they belong.
Paws-itive Change Award & Special Mentions
The Paws-itive Change Award recognises inspiring stories of transformation brought about by dogs in our society, with a kind donation from Pet Circle. This year’s award goes to ‘Sunday’ (Sydney NSW), who became the first Australian animal to undergo an osseointegration procedure, involving a hybrid Cobalt-Titanium implant in her tibia, after her leg was amputated as a puppy (see pictured right). ‘Sunday’ has made a pawsitive impact on the lives of other dogs. Her groundbreaking procedure has paved the way for other dogs to access innovative treatments and inspired advancements in human medical care, creating a ripple effect of positive change for countless lives.
The Puppy Tales team found all the finalists and many other nominations to be amazing dogs, but would like to give a Special Mention to finalists Fly: (Ulverstone TAS) and Ruzie (Sydney NSW).
“Fly and Ruzie may not have taken home the top awards, but their stories remind us that every dog plays a role in shaping lives and spreading joy,” says Kerry. Fly (RIP) was a therapy dog, touching the lives of veterans, at-risk youth and children, building confidence and providing comfort. Fly played a pivotal role in the Dolly’s Dream campaign, raising awareness about bullying and promoting safety for vulnerable individuals. Ruzie is an ocean-loving, surfing dog who retired from her role as a Seagull Patrol Dog at Sydney Harbour to spend more time with her family, offering comfort and support as they navigate a challenging time.
Prizes and donations to charities
Amid exceptional entries, selecting a winner once again proved challenging for the Puppy Tales team. At the end of the day, every dog is a winner! Winners, nominees and voters received prizes worth $20K, including $1,000 donation by Puppy Tales to the Australian Dog of the Year winner’s preferred charity and $250 to the People’s Choice’s nominated charity.
Nominations for Puppy Tales Australian Dog of the Year 2026 are now open at: https://puppytales.com.au/australian-dog-of-the-year/
Funding to improve the transitioning and rehoming of animals used in research
Three NSW based animal welfare organisations will share in $2.45 million to fund the rehoming of animals following their contribution to important scientific research projects.
The Minns Labor Government’s Research Animals Rehoming Grant Program supports organisations to find forever homes for cats, dogs, guinea pigs and other animals after they have completed their involvement in research.
With this investment and a suite of initiatives, including the recent passing of the Puppy Farm Bill introducing mandatory regulation of dog breeders, the Government is delivering on its commitment to modernise and strengthen the state’s animal welfare environment.
The animal rehoming organisations to receive funding are:
• Animal Welfare League (AWL) - $825,000
The AWL will continue its re-homing pilot program including building a wing at its site for dogs and cats from research establishments to transition them and then find new homes post-retirement.
• Blacktown Animal Rehoming Centre - $800,000
The centre plans to build a “real life room” at their current facility. The room will simulate a home environment to allow animals previously used in research to undertake rehabilitation and help them move on to the next phase of their lives.
• Liberty Foundation Australia - $825,000
Liberty Foundation will scale up its rehoming work with small animals such as guinea pigs, rabbits, rats and mice, including new education and volunteer programs to raise awareness and encourage more people to adopt an animal from research.
The Rehoming Grant Program funding is part of a broader $7 million investment to enhance positive welfare outcomes for animals, both during and after use in research, including identifying alternatives to replace animals in research.
The vast bulk of cats and dogs used in research are either part of programs designed to taste test new pet foods or as part of animal medicine test programs run through vet clinics with the approval of the animal’s owner.
Minister for Agriculture and Western NSW, Tara Moriarty said:
“The Minns Labor Government is committed to improving the welfare outcomes of all animals and in this case that of research animals.
“This $2.45 million in funding will make a real and proven difference and is dedicated to improving animal welfare outcomes by supporting specialist organisations to successfully rehome research animals.
“Effective rehoming requires education and a coordinated, cooperative approach, and that is why the NSW Government is supporting this by working with research, rehoming and animal welfare organisations to achieve the best outcome for research animals when they retire.”
NSW CEO Animal Welfare League Stephen Albin said:
“AWL NSW is pleased to be one of the recipients of funding from this important program, it will assist us rehome the animals that come into our care, regardless of their origins.
“Our commitment involves enhancing each animal’s socialisation skills by understanding their past, respecting their individual needs, and providing a safe and protected sanctuary here at our Kemps Creek Shelter.
“We offer every animal, including those from research, high-quality veterinary care, behavioural improvements, including walking animals four times daily, nutritional enhancement and careful matching with potential owners.
“Our unique ‘Hope to Love’ journey allows for prolonged stays demonstrating our dedication to animal welfare.”
Paula Wallace, Director Liberty Foundation Australia said:
“Liberty Foundation is delighted to be awarded funding as part of this unique grant program, which will help us provide a lifeline for animals moving from research establishments into the community.
“We know that small animals coming out of research settings can transition well into people’s homes as pets and companions and this funding means we can provide this opportunity to more animals.
“This funding comes at a crucial time, when more research establishments than ever before are wanting to work with us to provide the best possible outcomes for animals after their time in research.
“Funding like this is vital for small charities like Liberty Foundation to give us the helping hand we need to scale up our activities and share the wonderful message of rehoming with more people.”
Brad Bunting Mayor of Blacktown City said:
“This NSW Government grant will further support Blacktown City Council’s vision to help animals transition to happy, comfortable lives while changing community perceptions around rehoming pets.”
“The ‘real life room’ at the Blacktown Animal Rehoming Centre (BARC) is a practical step toward easing the transition of retired research animals back into the real world, giving them the chance to live happy and comfortable lives.”
“BARC is a state-of-the-art facility built to give animals the best chance at finding loving permanent homes. Designed with world-leading research, it sets a new standard for animal welfare, creating a welcoming space where pets in need and families searching for their perfect companion can come together.”
