38 2026 Australian Dog of the Year
Chairman's REPORT
Dear Members,
I hope everyone had a wonderful festive season and managed to enjoy some well-earned time with family, friends and your dogs. As we step into a new year, I’m feeling genuinely optimistic about what lies ahead for DOGS NSW. We have plenty of good work already underway, and 2026 is shaping up to be a year of real progress.
Over the holiday period I spent some time reflecting on how we can better involve our members in the direction of the organisation. To that end, we’ll soon be asking for nominations to be part of an Organisation Knowledge Tree. In simple terms, it’s an opportunity for members who want to contribute: those with skills, ideas, or simply experience and enthusiasm, to be part of a “coalition of the willing”. It will provide an organisation view of our collective skills and experiences, for those who want to voluntarily participate in project work and strategy; and I’m looking forward to seeing how this can bring fresh energy into what we do.
We’re also on track to deliver our new Strategic Plan in March. The first two workshops have provided excellent feedback and helped us identify the areas we need to focus on most. There’s more work to do, but the direction is clear, and I’m confident the final plan will put DOGS NSW in a strong position for the years ahead. The plan will have a roadmap attached to it, and deliverables, so we can check in on to see how we are performing.
Another change this year will be the introduction of quarterly Members’ Meetings. We want to create regular opportunities for members to hear directly from the Board, ask questions, and stay informed. Better communication and transparency will be a big focus for us throughout 2026.
Dog performance sports continue to grow rapidly, and we recognise the need to plan properly for their future. To support this, we’ll be developing a Dog Sports Performance Disciplines Plan— a vision to help us build and strengthen these areas over time. Our goal is to support Clubs, Judges, competitors and volunteers, so these disciplines can prosper and thrive.
We are also commencing an organisation-wide governance review. This is simply about making sure our processes and structures are robust, modern, and reflective of what a contemporary member-based organisation should look like.
The AdvanceTM Sydney Royal Easter Show (2-13 April 2026), is just around the corner, and many of our members, volunteers, and committees are already deep in preparation. It’s always a highlight of the year, and I want to thank everyone who works so hard behind the scenes to make it run smoothly and be a great success.
Finally, you’ll be seeing more regular reporting from the Board this year. We want members to clearly understand what work is being done and why. It’s important that our decision-making processes are not only sound, but visible.
We’ll also be developing a volunteer framework to help strengthen our presence at public events and give members more opportunities to be involved. Showcasing our organisation to the broader community is something we want to put more energy into, to build on the great work that has been accomplished. Thank you for your ongoing support and your commitment to DOGS NSW. I look forward to working with you throughout the year as we continue building a strong future together.
Warm Regards
Ross Sinclair
Ross Sinclair - DOGS NSW President
PATRON: Her Excellency The Honourable Margaret Beazley AO KC, Governor of New South Wales
Welcome to the first edition of DOGS NSW magazine for 2026! I do hope you all had a very Happy Christmas and New Year!
Congratulations to DOGS NSW member and Australian sheepdog handler Jess Kimpton, who recently made history as the first woman to be part of a team that claimed the coveted Wayleggo Cup at the 2025 Trans-Tasman Sheepdog Test in New Zealand, along with her champion seven-year-old Border Collie, 'Newcomen Stitch'. Coverage of the event commences on page 8.
Amongst other news is coverage of the popular Canine First Aid Workshop, with facilitators Julie Quinn and Narelle Brown, held on Saturday 18 October. See opposite page for coverage.
Features in the edition are as follows:
• Coverage of The Great Cattle Dog Muster, held on 6-7 September 2025 at Muswellbrook, commencing on page 10
• DOGS NSW Grounds Development Championship Shows, held Sunday 26 October 2025, commencing page 15
• Field Spaniel Club of NSW 's First SprintDogTM Trial and First NSW Triple Trial, held on Friday 10 October 2025commencing page 34.
In addition we also have two interesting articles provided by Royal Canin and Vetnex: the first from Royal Canin entitled 'Three Studies Shaping the Future of Pet Care,' and the second article, from Vetnex, discusses how 'Hyaluronic Acid is improving Joint Health in Dogs.'
Puppy Tales launches the 2026 Australian Dog of the Year competition, which celebrates Aussie dogs for their love, courage and fur-iendship with a $20,000 prize pool. Details on the competition appear on page 34.
Sadly we have lost another of our members, Hildegard Schliefert from Hildydane Great Danes, who is remembered in a vale by Kerrie Loseby on page 20.
Our spotlight breed for this month is the Pug, a small dog with a big and effervescent personality. Known for it's wrinkled muzzle and expressive communication skills, this breed certainly has a charm of its own. See page 22.
November's 'Tailortails' Competition Winners were Dave Chung and Vickie Harris.

We wish to extend our sincere thanks to DOGS NSW for their invaluable contribution to the success of the recent Canine First Aid Training Workshop held at your venue.
The feedback from participants clearly reflects a highly positive and informative experience. The evaluation results indicate a wellreceived session, with 18 attendees from a wide geographical area across New South Wales, leaving both happy and well informed. The session had an overwhelmingly positive feedback and suggestions to expand similar opportunities in the future.
Special thanks go to Angus McIlrath, who warmly welcomed us on arrival and provided outstanding support throughout the day. We were also delighted by the generous hospitality from Sue McFadden and Louise Patterson, who joined Angus with providing lunch, which exceeded expectations and was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
The venue itself played a significant role in the success of the event: with ample parking, open space and well-equipped kitchen and facilities creating an ideal environment for learning and networking.
We are truly appreciative of DOGS NSW’s commitment to bringing this valuable training to both members and the wider community.

Australian Sheepdog Team Claims Victory in New Zealand!
NSW Sheepdog Handler Jess Kimpton makes history as the first woman on a winning Australian team to take out the prestigious Wayleggo Cup!
Words: Caroline Zambrano
Australian sheepdog handler Jess Kimpton has made history as the first woman to be part of a team that claimed the coveted Wayleggo Cup at the 2025 Trans-Tasman Sheepdog Test in New Zealand, alongside her champion sevenyear-old Border Collie, 'Newcomen Stitch'.
The international event, held from 31 October to 1 November, pitted the best handlers and dogs from Australia and New Zealand against each other on a challenging hybrid course testing precision, teamwork and instinct. Each team guided three sheep through four obstacles, with the top-performing team taking home the sport’s most prestigious honour.
Australia triumphed by a landslide, with a team total of 688.25 points to New Zealand’s 626.75. Jess was not only the first and only woman to be part of a winning Australian team, but also the third woman ever to qualify for the Australian Trans-Tasman Team, and only the second from New South Wales. Her personal scores were Round 1: 85.25 and Round 2: 88.
“I’m over the moon. It is an incredible feeling to have achieved this,” Jess said. “There’s always a strong rivalry with New Zealand, but it’s built on good sportsmanship. Being out there to win for our country has been an honour. This win isn’t just ours; it’s for everyone who’s supported us along the way, from the local trial community to the Australian team selectors who believed in us.”
The 32-year-old from East Kurrajong, NSW has been trialling in three-sheep working dog trials for around 15 years and training sheepdogs for more than 12, alongside preparing her own dogs for national competition.
She grew up in a dog-sport family on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. At age four she ran her first agility course with her mum’s dog and later trained two chickens to weave poles and run tunnels just to prove she was ready for a dog of her own.

Jess’ achievements, however, span more than Border Collies, who she trains and mostly breeds under the Quickstep prefix (which Jess shares with her mum and breeds reining bred Quarter Horses).
She earned Australia’s highest herding titles with a Samoyed and Shetland Sheepdog on sheep, ducks and cattle. Her Shetland Sheepdog 'Fox', is the only of the breed to attain his Herding Champion title.
Beyond dogs, Jess has also competed in equestrian events with reining horses and has trained animals for film and television, including for the films Rams and The Fall Guy, and the TV series Colin from Accounts.
Jess earned her spot on the Australian team after standout results at the NSW Selection Trial in Bungendore. Despite many competitors running multiple dogs, 'Stitch' was her only eligible entry. Finishing in the top three secured her a place on the NSW team, which went on to compete at the Ted Gaby Interstate Challenge at the Supreme Australian Sheepdog Championships in Northam, WA.
There, the NSW team placed second, and Jess and 'Stitch' led the way with the highest overall score for the team. Their result ranked them in the nation’s top four, earning one of just four coveted positions on the Australian team!
Breaking barriers in a male-dominated sport
Sheepdog trialling has been part of Australia’s heritage for more than 150 years, with the first recorded trials held in Forbes, NSW in 1870. Today, the sport remains male dominated. Jess is only the third woman ever to qualify for the Australian Trans-Tasman team and just the second from NSW.
“These days you’re just another competitor,” said Jess. “The women in the sport cheer each other on, and we’re proving we’re not just making up the numbers, we’re competitive!”
Jess credits her success in sheepdog trials to the unwavering support of her family, the partnership she shares with 'Stitch', and her philosophy of guiding dogs to use their natural instinct with confidence and empathy.
“Stitch is more than a ‘trial dog’; she’s my partner,” she said. “When we’re in sync it’s magic. She’ll even ‘tell me’ when I’m wrong. It’s a true partnership – almost like we can read each other’s minds.”
When it comes to training sheepdogs, Jess explained, “I reward what’s right, calmly block what isn’t, and let the dog learn to make good choices. Confidence is everything in the dog and in the handler. You can’t push sheep around a course; you guide them.”
Balancing motherhood and sheepdog trialling
Today, Jess balances motherhood, sheepdog trialling and life on her Hawkesbury Valley acreage, where she and her husband Morgan are raising their young daughter Evie along with sheep, horses, chickens, a cat and a team of six Border Collies aged from eight months to 15 years.
“I’m so lucky to have the support I do to keep doing what I love – working sheep – even as a mum,” said Jess. “When Evie was younger, I thought the dream of competing might be over. But I proved myself wrong; you can be a mum and keep chasing your dreams.”

DOGS NSW proudly congratulates the Muswellbrook Chamber of Commerce and Industry on the outstanding success of the GCDM Free Family Fun Day, a vibrant community event held biannually that continues to grow in popularity and impact.
This year’s event drew an impressive crowd of over 7,500 attendees, transforming the grounds into a lively festival atmosphere that celebrated local culture, family fun, and the incredible world of pedigree dogs.
As proud sponsors of the event, DOGS NSW extends its congratulations to all participating sponsors, whose support helped make the day a resounding success.
A major highlight of the day was the two Championship Conformation shows, showcasing excellence in the Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog and the Australian Cattle Dog. These shows not only celebrated the heritage and versatility of these dogs but also promoted responsible dog ownership and the value of purebred dogs. There were over 250 entries across all disciplines: championship classes as well as dog sports.
Adding to the excitement, Dog Sports took centre stage with trials in Obedience, Rally, Trick Dog and Scent Work, with the two iconic breeds, plus Australian Working and Associate Register dogs competing. Spectators were treated to impressive displays of skill, teamwork and the deep bond between handlers and their dogs.
The Great Cattle Dog Muster continues to be a shining example of how community, culture and canine excellence can come together to create a memorable and meaningful event. DOGS NSW is honoured to be part of this celebration and looks forward to supporting future editions of this fantastic day.

DOGS NSW GROUNDS DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE CHAMPIONSHIP SHOWS ~ Sunday 26 October 2025
The DOGS NSW Grounds Development Committee was very pleased to present two fundraiser Championship Shows on Sunday 26th October 2025.
A huge thank you to the judges (pictured right), and stewards who gave up their time to support our shows and to our committee and volunteers, we could not do what we do without you.
This year, we extended our fundraising efforts with the assistance of Les Bradney and Jackie Hardwicke by conducting an online auction via our Facebook page. Collectable items were donated by Les, Jackie, Barbara Killworth, Doreen and Sean O’Donnell which at closing raised $1,895.00.
We then set up a Market Stall at the Show, which was manned all day by our committee member Darren Learmont-Smith and volunteer Brian Martin which raised a further $1,050.00. Thank you to everyone who donated so many quality items.
Our Event Sponsorship Manager, Kath Purkis and her team ran the raffle with amazing prizes raising a further $1,150.00. Congratulations to Mel Tinker on winning the Luxury Harbour Cruise for 8 people and Kim Rogers the Pitt Water Luxury Cruise for 8. Kath also made up the prize packs with Alyssa Jade and Sammy Anne which were fantastic.
In the kitchen Liz Wells and Angus McIlrath organised lunch for our officials which everyone agreed was delicious. Thank you also to Trish Cutler who came in after judging and helped clean up, always the worst job of the day. Many thanks to the DOGS NSW Grounds staff for setting up the podium and General Specials ring; it was much appreciated and certainly added to the atmosphere of the shows and to Barbara Killworth who managed to photograph every ribbon shot.
We were fortunate to have secured very generous sponsors namely Royal Canin, Knose Pet Insurance, Sires on Ice,Vebopets, Di-Vetelact, Delete, Orivet, Dogzonline, Blingy Dog Leads, Debbie’s Doggie Creations, Daintyfield Field Spaniels, IV San Bernard Australia, Canine Rose Hip Vital, BX Earth, Wonderfur, Snout Snacks, Oi Fetch, Bilpin Honey, Eye Envy, Marrow Z, Fetch n Bark, Pup Republic, Canine Vital, Sniff and Eat, Zami Pet and Marellen Show Ribbons.
The Handler classes were very well received, everyone winning a beautiful lead donated by Karen West of Blingy Dog Leads. They were stunning. Tiny Tot Handlers a definite must for those running shows. These kids are our future. We were pleased to be able to add support to the Share the Dignity Charity which is a passion of our member and friend Tanya Scales. Every little bit helps, and your donations will put a smile on someone’s face.
We congratulate all the winners and say thank you to everyone who took the time to say how much they enjoyed the day; it certainly makes it all worthwhile.
Our committee continues to grow: Angus McIlrath, Liz Wells, Kath Purkis, Sara Scott, John McLean, Aaron and Lauren Brooker, Darren Learmont-Smith, Cherie Bryson and so many wonderful volunteers. We embrace every event and adventure with a smile and positive attitude.
This time last year we had raised $15,000.00. We are now close to $60,000.00.
If you think you might like to become involved in our activities, we are always looking for new volunteers. Please contact Sue McFadden at glenbriar1@gmail.com or Angus McIlraith at angus.mcilrath@gmail.com for more information.

Hildegard Schliefert
Hildydane Great Danes
Hildegard was well known in the dog show world from as long ago as the 1980s. She will be remembered by many for her beautiful Harlequin Great Danes. You would see her arrive at the showground in her rather large bus with many a Dane head protruding from the windows. It took an army of friends to help put up her show tent and to stake out the dogs,as we did back in the day.
Hilda's early life was spent in Germany during World War II when she was just a child. Hilda always said that exercise was a very important part of your life, and she went onto become the Decathlon Champion in Germany. This then led to her joining Ice Capades (a world renowned ice skating show with only the very best ice skaters in the world). It was during this time that she met her husband-to-be. He insisted that she marry him but Hilda was more intent on travelling the world. Eventually her husband wore her down and she went to live with him in the Philippines where she raised a family of seven children. She lived in palatial residences and enjoyed a very privileged life.
After some years Hilda and some of her family moved to Melbourne. It was here that Hilda's love of Harlequin Great Danes began. I am told that she cut quite a glamorous figure inthe show ring with her stunning outfits.
Hilda did eventually move to Sydney (Box Hill) and lived on her 8 acre property with all her many Danes. It was at this time that she began importing some of the very best Great Danes from all over the world. Not something for the feint -hearted, as in those days the cost of flying a Great Dane into Australia and then spending six weeks in quarantine was exorbitant.
Hilda always gave freely of her time to mentor new breeders ans was more than happy to help out with breeding stock if required.
Apart from the Conformation ring, Hilda also loved to get her dogs involved on other disciplines such as Obedience. Here again, her dogs excelled, with many titles being awarded.
Hilda helped to promote the Great Dane breed, with many appearances on Burke's Backyard, Harry's Practice and other television appearances.
Hilda continued to show her Great Danes until she was well into her 70s.
Sadly Hilda passed away in early 2025, but she will always be remembered for her love of the Great Dane breed and for the happiness she brought into so many peoples lives when they purchased a beautiful dog from her.

Pug
History
Originating in China, the Pug is considered one of the oldest canine breeds; its story can be traced back to around 700 BC at the time of Confucius and prior.
It was imported into Europe from China in the 16th century with the aid of the Dutch traders and soon became a favourite of royal households throughout Europe.
In Holland, the Pug became the official dog of the House of Orange after a Pug reportedly saved the life of William, Prince of Orange, by giving him a warning that the Spaniards were approaching in 1572. When his grandson, William III and his wife Mary II, later travelled to England in 1688 to take the throne from James II, they took their Pugs with them. By 1790 the Pug’s popularity spread to France where Josephine, Napoleon’s wife, depended on her Pug (called Fortune) to carry secret messages under its collar to her husband while she was imprisoned at Les Carmes.
Today, the Pug is a popular companion worldwide, although it is known by many other names; ‘Mops’ in Germany and Holland, ‘Mopsi’ in Finland, ‘Carline’ in France and ‘Doguillo’ in Spain.
Temperament
A dignified and intelligent dog with great charm, the Pug has amazing communication skills; its expressive and wrinkled muzzle, body language and the varied sounds it makes clearly tell its owner what it wants and how it is feeling. It is an even-tempered dog that is both lively and happy. It can be strong-willed but is rarely aggressive.
Appearance
Today, the Pug is a square, stocky dog with a deep chest and well-developed muscle. It has a large, round head with wrinkles and a strong, thick neck that is slightly arched. The eyes are dark with no white showing when looking forward. The tail is curled, with a double curl being considered perfection. The Pug moves with a slight roll of its hindquarters. The only colours available are various shades of fawn and completely black. The fawn Pug features a black muzzle, ears and trace (a line from head to tail).
Maintenance & Grooming
The Pug’s facial creases need to be kept clean to avoid irritation and infection. The top of the nose is prone to becoming dry and cracked, and may require an application of pawpaw ointment to keep it in good condition. Despite a short coat, the Pug sheds profusely. The fawn Pug appears to shed more hair than its black counterpart. A shedding tool is useful and this task is best performed outside on a table, as the amount of coat removed is often astounding.
Health
Generally, the Pug is a tough, small dog with a lifespan around 12 to 15 years, however, because of the breed’s love of food, it can be prone to obesity. This can be easily avoided with exercise and a healthy diet. As the Pug’s face is flat, its eyes are more susceptible to damage than dogs with muzzles. The breed can be prone to skin disorders or reactions to pollens or grasses.
Suitability
The Pug seems to have an affinity for children and is robust enough for a good game. Being an adaptable dog it is equally happy to sit quietly with you and watch television. It is generally a quiet dog; its bark is quite muffled, making it good for unit living.
The Pug has been bred purely as a companion dog and thrives on being involved with its human family, so is not to be left alone in the backyard.

Science in Action: Three Studies Shaping the Future of Pet Care
Veterinary medicine is continually evolving, with new discoveries reshaping how we understand and care for animals. Much like in human medicine, research drives this progress—providing the evidence-based insights needed to improve health, wellbeing, and quality of life.
For veterinarians, breeders, and owners alike, continuous learning is essential to making informed, compassionate decisions that truly benefit animals. Ultimately, research and education unite everyone who cares for pets in the shared goal of helping them live healthier, happier lives while advancing the future of both animal and human care.
Waltham Petcare Science Institute
The Waltham Petcare Science Institute—owned by Mars Petcare—is a globally recognised leader in scientific research and innovation in pet nutrition and health. Based in Melton Mowbray, UK, the institute has been advancing the science of pet care for more than 50 years.
Working in collaboration with leading universities, veterinary professionals, and industry experts, Waltham conducts world-class research to improve the lives of pets around the globe. Its work spans a broad range of fields—including nutrition, behaviour, and the human–animal bond.
Among its many achievements, Waltham has developed growth charts using data from tens of thousands of healthy animals—providing breeders and veterinary professionals with an invaluable tool to assess and monitor puppy and kitten growth.
The institute also leads efforts to promote sustainability in pet nutrition, pioneering the use of microalgae as an alternative, renewable source of omega-3 fatty acids. This innovation helps reduce dependence on fish-based oils while supporting marine ecosystem preservation.
Beyond nutrition, Waltham’s research explores the human–animal bond, showing how pets positively influence emotional and physical wellbeing—especially in children. All studies undertaken by Waltham meet rigorous animal welfare, ethical, regulatory, and legal standards.
To bring Waltham’s work to life, I’ve summarised three recent research projects that demonstrate how cuttingedge science is advancing knowledge in nutrition, genetics, and the human–animal bond.
1. Real-world diagnostic potential of bacterial biomarkers of canine periodontitis
Periodontal disease is common in dogs but often underdiagnosed, as early stages show few visible signs. Accurate diagnosis typically requires general anaesthesia for dental probing and radiographs.
In this study, researchers investigated the use of specific bacterial biomarkers—bacteria present in the mouth—as diagnostic tools for periodontitis. By analysing saliva or oral swabs, they aimed to detect these biomarkers non-invasively, providing a quicker and less stressful alternative to traditional methods. The findings showed that certain bacterial profiles correlate with both the presence and severity of periodontal disease.
The team analysed plaque samples from 127 dogs undergoing dental procedures, both conscious and anaesthetised. The qPCR assay achieved an accuracy of 77.7–80.9%.
This molecular screening tool could enable earlier detection of periodontal disease in conscious dogs, helping veterinarians identify cases that require further investigation or treatment. By enabling earlier intervention, such tools have the potential to improve both oral health and overall quality of life for dogs.
2. A splice donor variant in SLAMF1 is associated with canine atopic dermatitis
Canine atopic dermatitis (CAD) is a lifelong inflammatory skin disease causing itching, irritation, and secondary infections. Affecting up to 30% of dogs, CAD arises from a complex interaction between genetics and environment. Using data from more than 28,000 dogs, Waltham scientists conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) to uncover genetic risk factors.
Their work revealed a significant variant in the SLAMF1 gene, located on chromosome 38. SLAMF1 encodes an immune system protein involved in cell signalling, and a splice donor mutation was found to disrupt its normal function—potentially doubling the risk of CAD. This variant appeared frequently in French Bulldogs (71%), Boxers (40%), and Labrador Retrievers.
The discovery identifies SLAMF1 as a promising target for future treatments and a potential biomarker for genetic testing. Breeders may eventually use this insight to make informed breeding decisions that reduce CAD prevalence, while maintaining genetic diversity across breeds.

3. Effects of human-animal interaction on salivary and urinary oxytocin in children and dogs
This study looks at how spending time with dogs affects oxytocin levels, a hormone linked to bonding and social connections, in both children and dogs. Researchers measured oxytocin in saliva and urine during three activities: playing with their pet dog, playing with an unfamiliar dog, and playing alone (control). They also studied how genetic factors, like oxytocin receptor gene methylation (OXTRm), influence behaviour and oxytocin responses.
Key Findings:
• Children’s Oxytocin Levels: Oxytocin was higher when children interacted with dogs compared to playing alone. Looking into their pet dog’s eyes (shared gaze) boosted oxytocin, showing the importance of a close bond.
• Dogs’ Oxytocin Levels: Pet dogs had increased oxytocin during play, while unfamiliar dogs showed a decrease. This suggests familiarity plays a role in oxytocin release.
• Genetic Influence: Children with higher OXTRm levels released more oxytocin when playing with their pet dog but less during solitary play.
Together, these results show how meaningful human–animal interactions can foster emotional wellbeing and strengthen the human–dog bond. The findings may also have implications for the use of therapy dogs in supporting children’s social and emotional development.

2025 NSW State & National RetrievingTrial Championships
The village of Hartley, NSW, provided the perfect setting for the 2025 NSW State and 54th National Retrieving Trial Championships, held across two weekends in September. Competitors, judges, volunteers, and supporters from every corner of the country gathered to test their skills, enjoy the camaraderie of the sport, and celebrate the working retriever at the highest level.
The NSW State Retrieving Trial Championship started the competition with 34 dog and handler teams entered, followed by the National the weekend after, which featured an impressive 38 teams. Both trials were set across Hartley’s diverse terrain, offering challenging tests that reflected real working conditions. Handlers and their dogs rose to the challenge, showcasing many impressive retrieves.
A wonderful variety of gundog breeds took part, including Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, German Shorthaired Pointers, a German Wirehaired Pointer, and a Springer Spaniel, each showcasing their natural working abilities, having been trained to the highest standard.
Our sincere thanks go to the Judges for their professionalism, fairness, and thoughtful run setting. Their commitment ensured that each retrieve was both achievable and a true test of skill, providing an engaging and rewarding experience for the dogs and their handlers.
No Championship of this scale is possible without the tireless efforts of volunteers. From preparing grounds and managing logistics to catering, stewarding, and countless behind-the-scenes jobs, the contributions of so many individuals ensured the smooth running of every day. The Championship Sub-Committee is deeply grateful to all who gave their time and energy so generously.
We extend a special thank you to our sponsors; from gundog breeders and retrieving clubs in NSW and across Australia, to businesses supporting the gundog community. Their generosity provided vital resources, prizes, and hospitality, allowing us to host a top-quality Championship. Without their support, organising events of this scale wouldn't be possible, and we sincerely value their dedication to our sport.
These Championships were more than just a competition; they were a celebration of the dogs and of the people who dedicate their time to training, trialling, and supporting the sport. Every dog and handler team demonstrated the countless hours of work that go into reaching this level, and every competitor should be proud of their achievements.
On behalf of the NSW RAFT Championship Sub-Committee, I thank everyone who contributed to the success of the 2025 NSW Retrieving Trial Championships. Hartley will be remembered as the backdrop to an outstanding showcase of our sport, and we look forward to the next opportunity to come together as a community.

HyaluronicAcid
& Joint Health in Dogs
Hyaluronic acid (HA), also known as hyaluronan or hyaluronate, is a non-sulfated glycosaminoglycan that occurs naturally in joints and other parts of the body including eyes and skin.
In the joint, HA is found in the cartilage and synovial fluid, it is a viscous, gel-like substance that acts as shock absorber and lubricant to keep joints moving smoothly. HA can also help the growth and development of joint’s cartilage and bone by promoting the growth of new cells and tissues, and further, it has anti-inflammatory properties and plays an important role in reducing joint inflammation and pain caused by injury or tissue degeneration.
As pets get older or develop osteoarthritis, the amount and quality of hyaluronic acid (HA) in their joints naturally decreases. When there isn’t enough healthy HA, the joint can’t stay properly cushioned or lubricated. This can lead to increased friction between the bones, causing discomfort, stiffness, reduced mobility, and difficulty with everyday activities. Supplementing HA helps restore this joint lubrication, supporting smoother movementmuch like topping up engine oil in a car to keep it running properly.
HA has been used for more than four decades for joint health in dogs, horses and humans. There are 2 types of HA treatments available globally, intra-articular injection or oral supplementation, both have been demonstrated clinically effective in alleviating articular pain, slowing degeneration of articular cartilage, or managing osteoarthritis in dogs.
Commonly, the intra-articular injections are used to treat knee or other joint pain caused by osteoarthritis in patients who have already been treated with pain relievers or other treatments without satisfactory outcomes. The injection has faster action but cost more and it normally requires intervention by a veterinarian. Oral supplementation is cheaper and is an easier option to use in home.
In Australia, intra-articular injection is only available for horses in veterinary space (not currently available for dogs), and oral supplements have very limited supply due to the price of the ingredient that is typically high. Vetnex’s Hyaflex mobility care products fill the gaps for effective joint HA care in dogs, they are formulated with HA and other proven joint ingredients including glucosamine, chondroitin, New Zealand green lipped mussel, turmeric extract and others. These ingredients have their own mechanisms and synergistically work together to achieve the best outcomes. Hyaflex is available in the dosage forms of soft chew or powder; both are manufactured in Australia in the APVMA approved manufacturing facilities, and Hyaflex Mobility Chews is a listed veterinary medicine with the APVMA.

The Field Spaniel Club of NSW has always been committed to celebrating the versatility of our beloved breed. 10 October 2025, marked a particularly special milestone in our club's history. Our first-ever SprintDog™ Trial wasn't just an event, it was a testament to what our community can achieve when passion meets dedication.
From the moment competitors arrived at the venue, the energy was palpable. Dogs of all breeds gathered, tails wagging with anticipation, while handlers prepared for the fast-paced sprint runs ahead. The meticulous planning was evident in every detail, from the clearly marked assembly areas to the efficient flow between check-in, measuring, and the sprint zone itself.
What made this trial truly outstanding wasn't just the execution of the event itself, but the spirit of participation it fostered. Watching handlers and their dogs work together in this exciting discipline reminded us why we're passionate about dog sports in the first place. The SprintDog™ format offers something unique - pure, fun, speed, that showcases the natural athleticism our dogs possess, regardless of their primary sporting focus or age.
Behind every successful event are the unsung heroes who make it all possible. Our Trial Secretary, Steph Betts, and Trial Manager, Kath Purkis, deserve special recognition for their tireless work in bringing this vision to life. Their attention to detail, from coordinating volunteers to ensuring safety protocols were followed, created a seamless experience that allowed everyone to focus on what matters most - celebrating our dogs & having fun!
Field Spaniel Club of NSW' President Kath Purkis said ”The first ever FSCNSW SprintDog™ Trials were a huge success and I would like to thank everyone involved in the lead up to the event, at the event and after the event. It was the first time in NSW that a club has held three consecutive days of Trials & we were the first Breed Club to have a SprintDog™ Trial at DOGS NSW. It’s a fun sport that dogs of all ages, shapes and sizes can do; and it has brought me closer to my dogs. Seeing so many exhibitors experience the magic of SprintDog™ has been truly rewarding and I look forward to supporting other breed clubs to hold their own SprintDog™ Trials in 2026 and beyond. If you haven’t tried it yet, I recommend you enter an upcoming trial, to see what it’s all about. A special thank you to Chris Gedzyk and the Grounds Staff at DOGS NSW who helped me make our event a success.”
We're also deeply grateful to our sponsors and exhibitors who believed in this new venture from the start. Their support not only helped make this trial possible but strengthened the bonds within our broader dog sports community. From premium supplement providers to equipment suppliers, each partner played a vital role in our success.
FEATURE
The turnout exceeded our expectations, with participants traveling from across Australia (QLD, NSW, ACT & VIC) to be part of this inaugural event. Their willingness to embrace something new, to step outside their usual competition routines, speaks volumes about the adventurous spirit within our community. Every run, every cheer, every moment of camaraderie contributed to an atmosphere that truly embodied the best of dog sports.
“Judging the Field Spaniel Club of NSW’s inaugural three day SprintDog™ trial was an absolute pleasure. What makes this sport so special is its inclusivity, it truly welcomes everyone, from pedigreed champions to much-loved family pets, including those who are differently abled. SprintDog™ is fostering a wonderful sense of community and bringing much needed new energy and people into the dog world.”
~ Denni Maxwell, SprintDog™
Judge.
As we reflect on this milestone, we're filled with excitement for what lies ahead. This first SprintDog™ Trial has set a high standard, but more importantly, it's opened the door to new possibilities for our club and our members. We've proven that we can successfully host diverse events that challenge our dogs in different ways while maintaining the supportive, family-friendly atmosphere that defines the Field Spaniel Club of NSW.
Exhibitor Sami Raines said “Opalyght’s first litter made their debut on the Sprintdog™ track this year. Dam Evagrin Into The Mystic achieved her first title, while her progeny also earned their initial Sprintdog™ titles at the Field Spaniel Sprintdog Trial: Opalyght Gunz A Blazing JC, Opalyght Girl On Fire, and Opalyght Fighting Fire. It was a very special moment as a breeder and I am very proud of them all.”
To everyone who participated, volunteered, sponsored or simply came out to cheer - thank you. You didn't just attend an event; you helped create a new tradition. We're already looking forward to welcoming you back at future SprintDog™ Trials and continuing to grow this exciting addition to our club's calendar.
Testimonials
Here's to many more sprint events, wagging tails and unforgettable moments together.
SprintDog™Judge Ally said “The Field Spaniel Club of NSW conducted the first triple SprintDog™ Trial in NSW from 10 -12 October 2025. As one of the new co-hort of SprintDog™ Judges, I was fortunate to be contracted as co-judge for the event with Denni Maxwell (NSW). We thoroughly enjoyed the appointments and congratulate the Club on an efficient trial, despite reaching the average maximum temperature for each Trial. All dogs ran their 1st run; many qualifying runs, and titles gained – Congratulations!!!!. Congratulations also to Kath Purkis (President and Trial Manager) and Steph Betts (Vice President and Trial Secretary) who guided the Stewards and flow of dogs, making a wonderful day of sportsmanship for this explosive new dog sport. As a special mention, to the volunteer stewards ... Thank you for helping be part of this fabulous triple Trial. Tally – ho!!
“The Field Spaniel Club of NSW ran a successful ballot process over the 3 trials held 10-12 October. With over 250+ entries received for each trial, a lucky 121 dogs per day got to run down the track at DOGS NSW. A big thank you to volunteers from all over NSW and the ACT that helped fill our track team and ensured we ran a smooth day for all participants.” ~ Steph Betts, Trial Secretary.
Exhibitor Justine Teo attended with her Gordon Setters and said “It was our first ever SprintDog ™ trial and we had a great time! The event was so well set up and everyone was so welcoming and friendly. The club ran a very generous raffle and that added an extra bit of fun as well. Well done Field Spaniel Club of NSW! We can’t wait to enter more trials and continue with this wonderful sport.”
Lure Operator Tracy Davis from Victoria said ~ “ I took a trip up to Sydney to drive the lure for the Field Spaniel Club of NSW SprintDog ™ event. The enthusiasm and sportsmanship were wonderful to see, and the Sydney crew made me feel so welcome. It was a real pleasure to be part of such a fun and well run event. I can't wait to come back!
Field Spaniel owner & exhibitor Melissa Egan said ~ ” We had such an incredible weekend at the Field Spaniel Club SprintDog trial! It was amazing to see all the passionate dog owners with their pooches. My girl, Indi, did some very speedy running and had a blast. She also really enjoyed all the pats she got throughout the day! Very grateful to be part of such a wonderful club."
