The Pekingese, a compact toy dog of regal bearing and a distinctive rolling gait, is one of several breeds created for the ruling classes of ancient China. Chairman's REPORT
Dear Members,
2025 DOGS NSW Spring Fair – 50th Anniversary
The 2025 DOGS NSW Spring Fair marked its 50th Anniversary with an event widely celebrated by exhibitors, Judges and visitors as one of the best Spring Fair shows to date. This year’s judging panel featured an impressive lineup of International Judges, including:
• Mr Frank Kane (UK)
• Mr Rony Doedijns (Netherlands)
• Mr & Mrs Sean and Cathy Delmar (Ireland)
• Mr Gerard Paolucci (Argentina)
• Mr Sei-Ichiro Ishimaru (Japan)
• Mr Raymond Yurick (Canada)
• Mrs Audrey Hauptfleisch (South Africa)
• Mr Martin Skeffinton (Ireland)
Entries exceeded the previous year by over 600, reflecting the ongoing popularity and prestige of the event. There was also a notable increase in the number of Specialty Club Championship Shows compared to prior years.
A highlight of the weekend was the attendance of 83 veterinary students from Yamazaki University, Japan, who participated on the Sunday and had the honour of presenting the Best in Show Trophy. Another memorable moment was the formal acknowledgment of first responders who successfully managed a lifethreatening medical emergency at a past event – a gesture that was warmly received by all present.
Congratulations are extended to Chair of the Spring Fair Dog Show Committee, Mrs Christina Rafton, and her dedicated Committee, for their tireless efforts in delivering such a remarkable milestone event.
Great Cattle Dog Muster – Muswellbrook
The Muswellbrook Chamber of Commerce hosted the Great Cattle Dog Muster on 6 September, which proved to be a great success. The event not only showcased Australian Cattle Dogs and Stumpy Tail Cattle Dogs but also helped strengthen the profile of DOGS NSW.
Special thanks to the DOGS NSW Administrator of the event, Mr Glen Vernon and his assistants for coordinating an engaging program that included Conformation shows, Scent Work, Obedience and Trick Dog demonstrations – all of which were enthusiastically received by the public.
Bunnings Spring Festival – Castle Hill
Congratulations are also due to the Chair of the Grounds Committee, Mrs Sue McFadden, and her Committee members for their continued efforts in promoting DOGS NSW, including their participation at Castle Hill Bunnings’ Spring Festival on 6 September. DOGS NSW was allocated a large area for the event, which featured Loretta Rabbitt and her popular dancing dog demonstrations – a definite highlight and crowd favourite.
Rising Interest in Sporting Events
Sporting disciplines continue to grow in popularity, with Sprint DogTM emerging as one of the most sought-after activities. Entry numbers are increasing steadily each month, demonstrating a strong and ongoing interest in these exciting events.
Kind Regards
PATRON: Her Excellency The Honourable Margaret Beazley AO KC, Governor of New South Wales

Thank you
from SQUISHY FACE RESCUE AND REHOMING
On behalf of the Volunteer Team at Squishy Face Rescue & Rehoming, I would like to publicly thank Mr Hugh Gent (OAM) and the Charity Directors on the RNSWCC Health and Welfare Charity Committee for their generous support of our rescue work.
Although our base is on the Gold Coast, our passion for saving the Brachycephalic Breeds leads us to supporting rescue of French Bulldogs, British Bulldogs, Pugs, Boston Terriers, Griffon Bruxellois and Australasian Bosdogs in every state in Australia.
We have an active rescue partnership with the French Bulldog Club of NSW, and I commend the French Bulldog Club of NSW Rescue Officers for their passion, patience and willingness to put the dogs first.
Thanks as well to Dr Karen Hedburg BVSc, Liz Davidson and Lyn Borg, from the French Bulldog Club of NSW, for their support and guidance on obtaining this grant.
Below there is a photo of a lovely fawn girl, who came into rescue, having had an untreated cherry eye and eye ulcer since 2021. This grant allowed us to secure immediate veterinary support, and she is now recovering in foster care, having already met her permanent owners, who can’t wait to start the trial. The monies received will be used 100% towards desexing, BOAS surgery, and will allow us to save dogs that would normally slip through the cracks and end up on the Gumtree merry-go-round.
Our team thanks you from the bottom of our hearts.
Warm Regards
Kelly McClelland, and Dagmar McLean
New Training App could reduce Problematic Behaviours in Dogs
A new study involving animal behaviour experts at the University of Lincoln, UK, has underscored a necessity for the early training and education of puppies in order to mitigate their risk of developing behavioural problems as adult dogs.
As dog ownership continues to rise, the need for effective training solutions and a better understanding of dogs’ welfare needs has become increasingly important. Behavioural problems in dogs can bring major welfare concerns for both dogs and their owners and, in worst possible cases, can lead to relinquishment or euthanasia of the animal.
To identify a substantial solution to these issues, the research group assessed the use and impact of puppy training app Zigzag - an educational tool designed to provide puppy owners with unique and easy access to a welfarefriendly training plan.
The groundbreaking findings, published in the journal Animals, are the first to indicate the potential value of dog training apps, revealing a promising association between the use of the Zigzag app and a decrease in the severity of various problematic behaviours in adult dogs. The study focused on a subset of 367 survey participants, specifically those who did not engage in any formal training or exclusively used the Zigzag app. Primary findings were that higher completion levels of the training modules within the app were generally associated with lower odds of having more severe problematic behaviours in the dog. Notably, the study found that app users reported less aggressive behaviour from their puppies towards familiar people, reduced instances of house soiling, and diminished destructive chewing behaviours, barking, and noise fear.
Daniel Mills, Professor of Veterinary Behavioural Medicine, explained: “It is important that puppies receive a good start to life to mitigate the risks of problematic behaviours developing.
“To prevent potential behavioural issues, the education of puppy owners is vital, and the Zigzag puppy training app, among others, provides a way to increase owner accessibility to welfare-friendly educational material.”
Lorna Winter, Co-founder and Head of Programme at Zigzag, added: “For too long, dog owners have been left guessing about how to train their puppies properly. This research proves that structured, positive training through the Zigzag app makes a real difference - not just for today, but for a dog’s entire life.”
The research also emphasises the necessity for further research in this area, which could explore various aspects of training app usage, including mode of delivery and user engagement.
As the landscape of pet training evolves, the Zigzag app stands out as a promising tool for dog owners and by continuing to investigate its efficacy and exploring the broader implications of dog-training apps, researchers can help ensure that puppy owners receive the best possible guidance for their furry companions.
The study was undertaken by the University of Lincoln, Dogtalk and Zigzag Petcare Services Ltd.
A new study which aims to uncover the attitudes of dog owners’ management of their pets has been undertaken by animal behaviour experts at the University of Lincoln, UK.
Eilidh Gilbert, PhD student and survey lead at the University of Lincoln, explained: “This study will also help to inform future research that will dig deeper into what motivates pet owners to choose the dog management methods they use. The findings will not only contribute to academic research but, we hope it will also serve as a resource for dog owners, trainers and policymakers.”

2025 STATE FINAL
The morning of the 2025 DOGS NSW Junior Handler State Final on 3rd August dawned with lessthan-ideal weather, giving us a day of alternating drizzle, sideways rain, cloud, wind and the rarest glimpse of the sun. Nonetheless 23 of our 27 Finalists eagerly presented themselves for registration at 9.00am to await the announcement of their Judge for the day.
This year, the delightful Ms Ayla Douglas from the ACT oversaw proceedings in Ring 1. Ayla has been showing since the age of seven and won Best Overall Handler at the ACT Junior Handler Finals at the age of ten, following this up with Runner Up Handler the following year. She and her mother share the Ayces Dobermann prefix and one of her proudest moments was winning Owner, Breeder, Handler at the 2024 Advance™ Sydney Royal Dog Show. Ayla has also been successfully involved with Fox Terriers (Wire), Welsh Terriers, Boxers, Siberian Huskies, Whippets, Rhodesian Ridgebacks and Shiba Inu.
The first age class to go under our Judge’s watchful eye were the 7 to under 10 years class, with one boy and two girls. These three children worked extremely hard with their chosen dogs to impress the judge with their handling skills, then moved on to the next round with an unknown swap dog selected for them by the Judge. After having 10 minutes practise with their swap dog, the three youngsters returned to the ring to be put through their paces once again, the concentration showing on their faces. After much deliberation, the placings were announced with 1st place being awarded to Rylee Craig, who showed a Dachshund Standard (Smooth) and a Jack Russell Terrier; 2nd place went to Alexandra Grant handling a Beagle and an Australian Shepherd, and 3rd place was Harvey Brooker, piloting an Irish Wolfhound and a French Bulldog.
The next class to line up for judging was the 10 to under 13 years class of nine girls all hoping to make it to the swap dog round. They carefully completed the exercises asked for by the Judge, handling their dogs with gentle hands on the leads. It was a very hard task for Ms Douglas to select the six girls who would make the next round.

Following an intense round of exercises with their swap dogs, the six girls waited with anticipation as the winners of their age class were finally revealed, with the nod being given for 1st place to Miranda Grant who worked with a Dalmatian and a French Bulldog; 2nd placegetter was Olivia Moorby who handled a Whippet and a Cocker Spaniel (American), with 3rd place going to Alex Thomson showing a Shetland Sheepdog and an Australian Shepherd.
Our final class of the day was the 13 to under 19 years class – the largest class with one boy and ten girls, all concentrating hard on putting on that perfect performance of handling skills to give them the edge to move forward to the swap dog round. The minute details of each exercise were carefully scrutinised by Ms Douglas to try and separate these children, and the concentration level for both Judge and finalists was intense. Finally, six competitors who would go through to the swap dog round were selected, and their swap dogs allocated. The six returned to Ring 1 and completed their set tasks with skill and determination. The difficult decision was finally made by our Judge, with 1st place awarded to Pippa Tulk , who impressed with her handling of a Jack Russell Terrier and a Welsh Springer Spaniel; 2nd place going to Jordan Long, working with a Finnish Lapphund and an Australian Shepherd; and 3rd place awarded to Eva Tulk, who showed a White Swiss Shepherd Dog and Border Terrier.
A short break was held to allow our Tiny Tots (see pictured below) to parade around the ring with their dogs – our little stars in the making!
Then…. it’s showtime! Ms Douglas took her place in the centre of Ring 1, and the three class winners entered with their chosen dog, trying to produce that absolutely perfect round and catch the eye of our well credentialled Judge. All were hoping that they would be the one crowned the 2025 DOGS NSW Junior Handler State Final Winner.
A good-sized crowd gathered ringside to cheer on and support the three class winners. The future of dog showing is in their hands, and they welcomed the applause and encouragement from the onlookers.
Pippa, Miranda, and Rylee’s final chance to show Ayla their skill, sportsmanship, style, and expert handling of their chosen breed had arrived, and all three girls put on a fantastic display for the crowd.

JUNIORS
As the Finalists lined up in the ring, they (and the crowd) held their breath, until Ms Douglas finally announced the Overall Winner as Miss Pippa Tulk from the 13 to under 19 years class! Amid cheering from the crowd, Pippa came forward to take her well-deserved place as the 2025 DOGS NSW Junior Handler State Final Winner!
The 2nd placegetter in the class, Jordan Long , took Pippa’s place in the lineup, and skilfully completed the allocated exercise, earning himself the coveted Runner Up award for 2025.
On behalf of the Junior Handler Working Party, I would like to congratulate all the Finalists for 2025. I am immensely proud of the way you worked with your dogs and handled the inclement weather conditions. Well done to each of you, and all the best for your future - you are an integral part and great ambassadors of the purebred dog world. Keep practicing and honing your skills and I hope to see you all at next year’s Final!
We are so grateful to our extremely generous sponsors and supporters – without you we would not be able to run this event to promote and showcase our up-and-coming talented youngsters. Enormous thanks go to DOGS NSW, Moorholme Pet Transport, Royal Canin, ShowManager, It Suits Me, Blingy Dog Leads, ShowAquipment, Michelle Kearney, AT Ribbons, Ingleburn Trophies and Jo Meadows Photography for your continued support to make the DOGS NSW Junior Handler Final a success and a wonderful experience for the Finalists.
Our sincere gratitude to our delightful judge Ms Ayla Douglas from the ACT for driving up to Sydney on her birthday to judge for us, to the very generous swap dog owners, and to Campbelltown & District All Breed Kennel Club for allowing us to use Ring 1 at their show for our Final.
Thanks also to my helpers on the day: Laura Meagher (swap dog queen extraordinaire), Kathleen Fortini (our MC), Debra Cummings (who keeps the Finalists nourished throughout the day) and Melissa Hallworth-Craig (for all her help on the day with setting up and helping to keep the day running smoothly), and the Junior Handler Working Party for their support throughout the year.
2026 will be an even more exciting year for Junior Handlers as we will be hosting the National Finals. If anyone would like to join the Working Party to work on Sponsorship for 2026 – we’d love to hear from you!

8.1 A Khamis 2100041311 to move by Special Resolution
THAT the RNSWCC Articles of Association, Part II – Membership be amended to include a new clause, after Clause 9: Junior Membership, numbered 9A, to read as follows:-
9A Community Membership
(a) The Board of Directors may admit as a Community Member a natural person who has attained the age of 16 years and who wishes to participate in canine activities that do not involve conformation showing or dog breeding, including but not limited to obedience, agility, scent work and other ANKC Ltd recognised dog sports.
(b) A Community Member:-
(i) shall not be eligible to hold any office under the Articles or to submit their name as a candidate for appointment as a Judge;
(ii) shall not be entitled to vote at any meeting;
(iii) shall not be entitled to hold a prefix or register a litter;
RNSWCC Ltd Annual General Meeting Agenda
(iv) shall not be eligible for nomination to, or election as a member of, the Board of Directors and may not vote in any ballot in any such election.
(c) Subject to the limitations in Clause (b), above, a Community Member shall be entitled to enjoy the privileges of membership including the right to:-
(i) enter and participate in ANKC Ltd approved dog sports and activities conducted by or under the licence of RNSWCC;
(ii) receive member communications and access relevant resources;
(iii) be a member of a sporting or training affiliated club.
(d) A Community Member shall pay an annual subscription equal to 40% of the full membership fee or such other amount as the Board of Directors may from time to time determine.
(e) The application for Community Membership shall be made in the form prescribed by the Board of Directors and shall be subject to approval in the same manner as a standard membership application.
RATIONALE:
This new membership class is designed to provide an inclusive and accessible entry point for dog lovers who would like to be active in canine sports but are not breeders or conformation exhibitors. By offering a tailored membership category that suits their interests and needs, DOGS NSW can:-
Grow its membership base by welcoming a broader spectrum of dog owners and sport participants;
Increase public awareness and relevance of the organisation by encouraging greater community engagement and visibility across all dog disciplines;
Strengthen affiliated sporting clubs by making it easier for new participants to get involved and become part of the formal DOGS NSW framework;
Support the long-term sustainability of canine sports through increased participation, education and connection with our wider membership network.
This proposal does not alter or affect the rights and privileges of existing breeder or conformation members. Instead, it complements current membership categories by opening the door to a wider community of responsible dog owners. This initiative aligns with our mission to be the peak body for all dogs in New South Wales and to support the responsible enjoyment of dogs in every form.
RNSWCC Ltd Annual General Meeting Agenda
8.2 A Khamis 2100041311 to move by Special Resolution
THAT the RNSWCC Articles of Association, Part II-Membership: Cessation of Membership, Clause 10(d) which reads as follows:-
10. A person shall cease ipso facto to be a member of RNSWCC: (d) If the annual subscription for the forthcoming membership year payable pursuant to Article 14 has not been paid within 30 days of the end of the previous membership year; (11/17)
Be amended to read:-
10. A person shall cease ipso facto to be a member of RNSWCC: (d) If the annual subscription for the forthcoming membership year payable pursuant to Article 14 has not been paid by 30 June of each year within 30 days of the end of the previous membership year ; (11/22)
RATIONALE
This amendment seeks to update Article 10(d) to reflect the transition to a common membership expiry date of 30 June, which was introduced in 2018 to simplify administration and provide consistency across the membership base.
Under the previous system, membership expirations were staggered, and members were given only one month’s notice to renew, however, under the current structure, renewal invoices are issued from 1 April each year, providing all members with three full months’ notice to renew their membership by 30 June. Therefore, the continuation of a 30-day grace period into July is no longer necessary.
In fact, maintaining this grace period undermines the clarity and purpose of the common expiry date, creating confusion among members as to when their membership actually ends. More importantly, it complicates the administration of Board elections, as the Articles define voting eligibility based on financial membership. Retaining a grace period creates inconsistencies between the Articles and practice, making it harder to determine eligibility with certainty.
By amending Article 10(d) to state that membership ceases on 30 June if the renewal has not been received, the organisation will:
Reinforce the consistency and purpose of the common renewal date,
Reduce member confusion around expiry and renewal deadlines,
Ensure compliance with the Articles regarding election eligibility,
Improve the integrity and accuracy of electoral roll preparation,
Streamline administrative processes and communications.
This amendment represents a practical and necessary alignment of the Articles with current operational procedures.
RNSWCC Ltd Annual General Meeting Agenda
Finally, Australian law does not mandate a grace period for membership payments. Australian law places the responsibility of setting terms and conditions, including grace periods for membership payments, on the individual organisation or club. Therefore, whether a grace period is offered, and for how long, is determined by the specific membership agreement between the organisation and the member.
8.2 C Rafton 2000121100 to move by Special Resolution
THAT the RNSWCC Articles of Association, Part III-The Board of Directors –Chairman and Deputy Chairmen, Articles 39 to 41, which read as follows:-
39. At the conclusion of the annual general meeting or as soon thereafter as may be practicable the Board of Directors shall, subject to Article 39, elect from amongst their number:

40. (a) No person may hold the office of Chairman for more than 3 consecutive years;
(b) a person who has held the office of Chairman for 3 consecutive years is not eligible for further election to that office until the conclusion of the next succeeding annual general meeting.
41. Notwithstanding Article 38, the first Chairman and Vice-Chairman of RNSWCC shall be the persons who immediately prior to the adoption of these Articles held the positions of President and Vice-President of the Association. (b) a person who has held the been elected to hold office of Chairman for 3 consecutive years or part thereof; is not eligible for further election nomination to that office until the conclusion of the next succeeding annual general meeting.
41. Notwithstanding Article 38, the first Chairman and Vice-Chairman of RNSWCC shall be the persons who immediately prior to the adoption of these Articles held the positions of President and Vice-President of the Association. The persons thereby elected shall hold office until the first annual general meeting of RNSWCC.
RATIONALE
The intent of the original Article was to limit the term of any individual from serving in the office of President for more than 3 terms, evidenced on Page 10 of the 1991 ‘Memorandum of Association and Articles of Association’ which states that exact word: “term” In 1993, this changed to 3 ‘years’ and I have been unable to find any change as having been altered via a Notice of Motion on Agendas between those dates.
Legal interpretation now states that any person who wishes to be elected to the position of President can do so past the intended 3 x number of days in those years. An absence of a few weeks or months allows this restriction to be negated. That was never the intent, but rather to align itself with the 3 x 365/366 days re the election of Directors from the various Regions.
9. MEETING CLOSED.
Please note that members attending the AGM should ensure that your membership is financial as this will be checked upon entry.

Pekingese History
An ancient Chinese legend tells of a lion that fell in love with a little monkey and was faced with a choice – it could keep its size and power, or sacrifice them for the companionship of the monkey. The lion chose the monkey, and various versions of the legend have the Pekingese as either the lion, having sacrificed its size, or the offspring of the lion and the monkey. Told either way, the legend reflects the proud, noble bearing of the Pekingese.
One of the oldest breeds, the Pekingese is named for the Chinese city of Peking (now Beijing), where the little dogs were kept by members of the Chinese Emperor’s household. Pekingese were seen as sacred dogs and could only be kept inside the walls of the Forbidden City, the Chinese Imperial Palace built in the 15th century. The penalty for anyone found with a Pekingese outside the walls of the Forbidden City was death.
In 1860, when British and French forces invaded the Forbidden City, it is said that they found five Pekingese guarding the body of an elderly aunt of the Emperor who had chosen to commit suicide rather than face the revolutionaries. Four female and one male Pekingese were taken to England by Lord Hay that year. One of those Pekingese, named ‘Looty’, was given to Queen Victoria, and the others to English nobles who bred them. Around the turn of the century, Pekingese were given as gifts to prominent people in several countries, and the breed soon gained popularity around the world.
Pekingese were first shown in England in 1904. Many early champions are pictured in the Hutchison’s Dog Encyclopedia and British society pages as the Pekingese became highly fashionable after the Great War in the 1920s and 30s. According to Babs Godbold’s book, Pekingese of Australia, Pekingese arrived in this country not long after the United Kingdom and United States. There is even a story regarding dogs being sold back to China after the imperial court stopped breeding after the emperor’s abdication.
Characteristics
The Pekingese is small, well-balanced and ‘surprisingly heavy’ when picked up, according to the standard. It should have a sense of dignity and quality, enhanced by a high-set tail, carried slightly curving over the back, with long feathering.
IMAGES: Above: Submitted by Dr Hilary du Cros, Owner: Dannielle Mondon. Below: Kellie Jane Photography. Submitted by Kylie & Sam Paine. Opposite Page (top): Submitted by Kate Connell. Below: Submitted by Kylie & Sam Paine.
Temperament
The Pekingese is an alert dog and inquisitive about what is happening around it. When aroused, the Pekingese has a unique expression – its eyes come alive. According to the standard, it is ‘fearless, loyal, aloof but not timid or aggressive’. Loyalty is one of the strongest Pekingese qualities; it would protect anything it thought belonged to it.
As former temple guardians, they can be excellent watch dogs. Your Pekingese will give the alarm to wake up your larger guard dog, who will then see to the intruders.
Appearance
A leonine appearance is suggested by the thick-set body, distinct waist and long, straight coat with profuse mane forming a cape around the neck. The Pekingese has a coarse topcoat with a thick undercoat, of all colours and marking except albino or liver – particolours are predominantly white and evenly broken. Pigmentation on nose, lips and eye rims must be black.
The head should be large and rectangular, and the broad, wide skull should be flat between the ears. The placement of the ears is important to the appearance of the skull – low ears will lend the skull a ‘domed’ look, while ears set too high will make the head appear square.
The muzzle should be almost as wide as the broadest part of the skull, short, wide and well-cushioned, with a firm, wide underjaw; it should not overhang the chin. The Pekingese nose should be short, broad and black, with large, open nostrils. Eyes should also be very dark, round and lustrous.
All colours are permissible except for liver, albino and merle. It was said that this characteristic was bred into Pekingese so there would be one to match almost every colour in the imperial wardrobe. Miniature or “Sleeve Pekingese” (less than 3kg) were said to be small enough to be carried in same by courtiers. Miniatures or “Minnies” still appear in present day litters occasionally. For its small size, the Pekingese is surprisingly sturdy. Dogs weigh up to 5kg, and bitches up to 5.4kg

Health & Maintenance
The breed was developed in the mostly cool temperate climate of north-eastern China. During the summer months, care should be taken on hot days to allow exercise only in the early morning and in the evening. It is double-coated and dogs will require a certain amount of maintenance if kept in full coat. This requires daily brushing and washing monthly (less in winter). It can be simpler to keep a non-showing Pekingese trimmed in a ‘puppy cut’. It is also a flat faced breed and will suffer eye problems, if attention is not paid to the careful removal of dirt from facial creases and around the eyes. Use a cotton wool ball dipped in warm water and a few drops of gentle shampoo or use pet eyelid wipes. Ears and paws should also be checked and/or trimmed regularly as yeast infections are a risk. As an ancient breed, Pekingese have fewer health issues than some more recent breeds or cross/designer breeds.

Pekingese in Popular Culture
Pekingese have appeared in numerous films, most notably as Peg in Disney’s ‘Lady and the Tramp’ movies. Another memorable character is Mr. Woo in the 1936 film Stowaway, a Pekingese belonging to Shirley Temple’s character. More recently, a cheeky appearance of a Pekingese in Sofie Coppola’s film, ‘Marie Antoinette’, despite being way before any left China. Looty has a whole episode of the ABC podcast ‘Stuff the British Stole’, dedicated to their story and Facebook video (with Marc Fennell narrating: https://fb.watch/2fMBd-JX9v/). And, who could forget Tricky Woo in the James Herriot books and TV Series ‘All Creatures Great and Small’. Notorious for having ‘flop bot’ and going ‘crackerdog’.
Pekingese became the favourite breed of film stars and other celebrities during the twentieth century. They were pictured with Shirley Temple, Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, Joan Rivers, Betty White and the French Ballet impresario, the Marquis of Cuevas. The Marquis would drive round Paris in his Black Rolls Royce with a backseat full of white Pekingese. Pekingese remained highly popular until the late 1970s. It was not unusual then to see the Open Dog class at the Sydney Royal Easter Show overflow the ring with superb champion dogs.
Dr Hilary du Cros is a long-time Pekingese owner and breeder, who started showing Pekes when she was 10 years old. Her dogs have travelled with her internationally and are principally from North American and European bloodlines. Zhen Kennel’s current focus is on healthy, sound dogs with typical Pekingese temperament that makes them the ultimate companion dog. Black and tans, blacks, creams and other heritage colours are our specialty.

5 fascinating facts about fibre
Dr Justine Schellekens
1. You might be surprised — fibre isn’t so simple
Fibre may seem boring, but it’s actually quite complex. It’s a vital part of plants—think of it like their outer skeleton, helping them stand tall.
As a non-digestible carbohydrate, fibre can’t be broken down by digestive enzymes in dogs, cats, or humans. The sugar units are linked in a special way, unlike digestible carbohydrates such as sugars. While fibre doesn’t provide energy or calories, it plays a fundamental role behind the scenes.
Fibre is often categorise by its properties:
• Solubility – Does it dissolve in water?
• Viscosity - Can it thicken and form a gel?
• Fermentability – Can gut bacteria break it down (ferment) and use it?
Figure 1: Total Dietary Fibre.
Figure 2: Properties of common fibre sources.¹
Not all fibre types are created equal. Soluble fibre attracts water, giving it a high-water holding capacity. Soluble fibres (like oats and barley) are generally fermentable, while most insoluble fibres (like cellulose) aren’t – but there are exceptions, such as psyllium, which is soluble but doesn’t ferment easily. Some fibres are “mixed” with both soluble and insoluble properties.
Since no single type of fibre does it all, many commercial foods combine different fibres to support digestion and help shape a healthier gut microbiome, both now and in the long term.
2. Slow or fast? Fibre sets the pace 3. Prebiotic power
Dietary fibre supports digestive health and stool quality in healthy dogs and cats. However, factors like size, age, energy needs, and stress can affect stool quality as well as the type and amount of fibre needed.
Both soluble and insoluble fibres affect gastrointestinal (GI) transit but in different ways:
• Soluble fibre: when in contact with water, soluble fibre (pectins, gums, oligosaccharides, etc) forms a gel that slows down GI transit.
• In contrast, insoluble fibre adds bulk to stools and stimulates peristalsis (intestinal muscle contractions).² Since it mostly passes through the body unchanged, it helps move things along by improving stool consistency and increasing volume.
Research highlights the essential role of gut flora in gastrointestinal health and immune function. The gut microbiota, along with the intestinal mucosa, acts as a barrier against harmful pathogens. In addition to this protective role, these beneficial bacteria help metabolise food, detoxify harmful substances, and compete with pathogens for nutrients and space.³ Disrupting this balance can lead to allergies, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and diarrhoea.⁴
Some fibres are prebiotics, which stimulate the growth and activity of beneficial bacteria. Diets rich in prebiotics support the growth of healthy gut flora, helping to prevent and manage gastrointestinal disorders.
Two common prebiotics are:
• Fructo-oligosacchardies (FOS): Made up of fructose and glucose, FOS promotes the growth of beneficial bacteria. In breeding bitches, FOS has been shown to increase IgM antibody levels in milk, supporting puppies’ immune health.⁵
• Mannan-oligosaccharides (MOS): Derived from yeast cells, MOS work differently. They prevent harmful bacteria from attaching to the intestinal lining and enhance the body’s immune defences.
4. Postbiotics explained
When prebiotic fibres are fermented by beneficial gut bacteria, they not only support the growth of these microbes but also produce valuable by-products called postbiotics. One of the most important groups of postbiotics is short chain fatty acids (SCFAs).
SCFAs serve as a primary energy source for enterocytes (the cells lining the gut). By fueling these cells, SCFAs help maintain a strong gut barrier, support the protective mucus layer, and play a key role in helping to reduce inflammation within the digestive tract.⁶
5. Using fibre to combat diarrhoea, constipation and more
Diarrhoea & Constipation
Fibre-enhanced diets have shown benefits in managing acute diarrhoea.⁷ In one study, dogs fed a high-fibre diet (6.1 g/100 kcal TDF) had better faecal scores than those on a lower-fibre diet (1.5 g/100 kcal).⁸ Another trial with 59 dogs with acute colitis showed that a psyllium-enriched diet improved clinical outcomes more effectively than metronidazole alone.⁹
More fermentable fibres can help manage both diarrhoea and constipation in pets by regulating stool water content. They work by making loose stools firmer and hard stools softer.
Colitis
Increasing fibre in the diet helps bind bile acids. When bile acids are broken down, they can damage the colon, causing increased fluid and mucus production. Adding insoluble fibre stretches the colonic muscle, helping to restore normal bowel movements and reduce straining.
Obesity & Weight Management
Fibre plays a useful role in managing obesity in dogs by reducing the energy density of food. Soluble and viscous fibre types slow gastric emptying, while insoluble fibre increases food volume, promoting satiety.10 This can help lower voluntary energy intake.
Diabetes
Certain viscous fibres such as psyllium, may reduce post-meal blood sugar spikes by slowing gastric emptying, delaying small intestinal transit, binding glucose and water, which reduces intestinal absorption.¹¹
Fibre – how much?
While fibre offers numerous health benefits, too much can cause digestive discomfort. Excess fibre may lead to increased stool volume, frequency, and reduced palatability, as well as decreased digestibility of key nutrients like proteins and minerals. Excess fermentable fibre can draw water into the intestines, potentially causing osmotic diarrhoea.12
Though not classified as an essential nutrient, fibre is crucial for maintaining health and managing diseases. Its use must be tailored to each individual pet, as the right type and amount of fibre vary depending on the condition and the pet’s unique needs.

RED & YELLOW SHOWS 15 JUNE 2025
They say you wake up in the morning and never know what the day will bring. This was one of those days. We started off well with a lovely entry, thank you exhibitors, smooth-running rings, thank you to our Judges and hard working Stewards, a very welcome lunch, thank you to my wonderful Committee and Friends of the Library. Beautiful memories of the winners, and many thanks to our photographers, Noeleen Marmont and Barbara Kilworth.
During the lunch break an exciting class of seven Tiny Tots came into the show ring. Thank you to the parents and helpers, the Judge, and of course the well trained ‘doggies’. Despite a thwarted escape attempt by a ‘furbaby,’ every Tiny Tot was a winner, cheered on by the gallery. We need to start our handlers off ‘young’ and continue to encourage.
Early in the afternoon show a Gundog exhibitor experienced a medical emergency in the ring. Thankfully a swift response by medically trained exhibitors, using the AED until the Paramedics arrived, ensured a positive outcome. Thank you DOGS NSW for the AED unit and many thanks to all for your assistance and cooperation in clearing access for the emergency response units.
Thanks again to the Committee:Tom Mangan, Sina Castiglione, Louise Patterson, Belinda Wilson, Douglas Mackay, Sharon Patterson, Robin Mackintosh, Hilary Pedersen, Pat Thomas and Friends Sue Evans and Laurie Wheeler.
On 9 August 2025 the Obedience, Tracking & Performance Disciplines Committee conducted the 2025 Endurance Test. Whilst heavy rain was forecast, the morning started with sunshine and it kept dry during the test.
Handlers and dogs train sometimes up to 12 months to get the dog and handler fit, and the dog used to running next to the bike at a certain speed.
The Test is conducted over three different surfaces, such as bitumen, unsealed roads, dirt tracks, grass, etc, with the total distance of the course being twenty kilometres (20 kms).
The distance is split into three segments: 8km, 6km and 6km, with rest breaks in between.
The object of an Endurance Test is to demonstrate the dog’s ability to work after being subject to a certain degree of physical strain, without showing signs of undue stress or lack of constitution.
The Test is carried out with the dog travelling at a suitable pace (approximately 10kph) for three separate durations. This places an increasing load, not only on the dog’s internal organs, such as the heart and lungs, but on many other aspects of the dog’s physical structure and temperamental characteristics.
Taking part in an Endurance Test does not only build a close relationship between handler and dog, but it is also fun to get out for the day with fellow competitors enjoying the physical activity with your dog.
The group (maximum of 20 dog/handler teams per Judge) consisted of bike riders, e-bike riders and runners.
We had dogs from all different breeds and backgrounds. From a Giant Schnauzer and a Standard Poodle to a small Associate Register Dog, all fit and eager to run.
A willingness test is conducted in the beginning and the end, to make sure the dog is willing to work at the same manner, before and after the test.
After a short briefing from the Judge, Kirstin Molloy (NSW), the group gathered and got their first Vet check. Thanks to Jennifer Green, our Vet, with her crew of veterinary students, the dogs were happy to be examined and given the “green” light to compete.
ENDURANCE
The competitors were lined up behind the pacemaker Rick Loft, and with the OK from the Judge (who amazingly ran the whole way along the group), the keen dogs, riders and runners took off.
Samantha Ibbot-Cordi, who usually organises the Endurance Test, was in attendance this year as an E.T. Judging Candidate.
Timekeepers Wayne Mansfield and Sandra Gluck, made sure that the pacemaker kept to his speed, and it was lovely to hear the chatter and good spirit within the group.
After the second and final willingness test (a short obedience test on leash) the Endurance Test was concluded, and the competitors then received their Endurance Qualification and a sash.
It was a great day out with amazing sportsmanship and fun.
The presentation and some refreshments for officials and competitors were waiting in the DOGS NSW Amenities Building after the Test. This was the place and time to share experiences of the day: from a selfbuilt bike, with a handle bar which was back to front (which the competitor noticed after the first 6km), to the dogs who were expecting to run some more, and still keen after the last km.
Thanks to Lyn Mansfield DOGS NSW Representative, Stewards and helpers. Many thanks to our sponsor Royal Canin.
Pauline Hartwell was present to oversee the event and she shared her experiences from her own Endurance Tests, which gave great insight to how dog sports have changed over time.
If you are interested in competing and training for an Endurance Test, entries are open to Dogs Australia registered dogs (Main, Limited, Associate and Sporting Registers), aged between 2 and 8 years.
We are looking forward to next year and hope to see you there.
