“Siberian Husky: A thickly coated, compact sled dog of medium size and great endurance, was developed to work in packs, pulling light loads at moderate speeds over vast frozen expanses. Siberian Huskies are friendly, fastidious and dignified. Quick and nimble-footed, Siberians are known for their powerful, but but seemingly effortless gait.”

Dear Members,
Chairman's REPORT
It is a real honour and a privilege to serve as the new President of DOGS NSW. I am very grateful and so proud for the trust our Board and members have placed in me, and I take this responsibility with a great commitment and purpose for our wonderful organisation and the people who make it so special.
The future of DOGS NSW is very bright. We have so many exciting opportunities ahead of us—to strengthen our community, celebrate our shared passion for all dogs, and build on the proud traditions and exciting future opportunities that will continue to make DOGS NSW a leader in the canine world. Together, we can continue to improve member engagement and participation, support responsible breeding and dog ownership, promote all of our wonderful and growing dog performance sports, drive innovation, and enhance the experience for all exhibitors, Judges, volunteers, enthusiasts, and our communities.
There is so much we can achieve when we work together with respect, openness, and a shared vision for the future. I really look forward to collaborating with our dedicated members, Board, Committees, clubs, and volunteers across the state to make a positive and lasting impact.
I would also like to express my heartfelt thanks to our outgoing President, Mrs Lyn Brand, for her outstanding service, dedication, passion, and enthusiasm during her term as President of DOGS NSW. Her leadership and tireless efforts have left an enduring legacy, and we are deeply grateful for her commitment to advancing the organisation and its members.
In addition, I extend my sincere thanks to our outgoing Directors; Lyn Brown, Guy Spagnolo and Stephen Oliver, for their service to the Board over many years, and more specifically over the past three years. Your dedication, experience and commitment have contributed greatly to the ongoing success of DOGS NSW. On behalf of the organisation, I wish you all the very best for the future and look forward to your continued support and engagement with DOGS NSW.
As the festive season approaches, I extend my warmest wishes to all our members, their families and friends. May you enjoy a safe, joyful and relaxing Christmas, and a very happy and prosperous New Year. Thank you for your passion and ongoing contribution.
I look forward to an exciting year ahead for DOGS NSW in 2026.
Warm Regards

BLACKTOWN CITY PET FESTIVAL
DOGS NSW Shines at the Blacktown Pet Festival
Building community, connection, and canine fun in Western Sydney
Words: Angus McIlrath ~ Chair, DOGS NSW Public Relations Committee
DOGS NSW was once again front and centre at this year’s Blacktown City Pet Festival, held on Sunday, 28 September, from 10.00am to 2.00pm.
Following the success of last year’s attendance, DOGS NSW returned with a double stand, offering festival-goers a vibrant hub of information about dog sports, events and membership opportunities.
Engaging
the Community
The stand attracted hundreds of local residents and their dogs, many of whom were eager to discover new activities they could enjoy with their pets. It was inspiring to meet so many families looking to connect with like-minded dog lovers, join clubs and get involved in training and canine sports.
“It was wonderful to see so many enthusiastic dog owners keen to learn, connect and become part of our wider DOGS NSW community.”
Many prospective puppy owners also stopped by to seek advice on puppy school, education and socialisation, demonstrating a growing awareness of responsible dog ownership in the local area.
Our Ambassadors on the Day
Our friendly four-legged representatives were a huge drawcard for visitors:
• ‘Stella’ and ‘Caitlin’ the spirited Miniature Schnauzers
• ‘Deon’ the Doberman, who was delighted to reunite with several families who remembered him from last year.
• ‘Cleo’, our senior Golden Retriever ambassador, kindly on loan from Blacktown Kennel & Training Club Inc.
• And Sue McFadden’s lovable Cocker Spaniels, ‘Dodi’ and ‘Ellie’, who charmed the crowds wherever they went.
A heartfelt thanks goes to Director Mrs Sue McFadden and DOGS NSW Digital Marketing expert Kate Davidson for their valuable support throughout the event and for sharing highlights on social media. Thanks also to Kerry Christofi and Abby Davis for their support with organising DOGS NSW attendance at the event.
Spotlight
on Blacktown Kennel & Dog Training Club
A special mention must go to the Blacktown Kennel & Training Club Inc, who delivered outstanding demonstrations and activities during the festival. Their dedication to dog sports, strong volunteer base, and commitment to community engagement are truly inspiring.
The club continues to welcome new members and puppy owners with warmth and enthusiasm; and, following the festival, they are now working with more than 30 new membership enquiries. An exceptional outcome that reflects both their professionalism and the growing community interest in dog sports.
NEWS
The Blacktown City Pet Festival once again proved the power of community engagement and education. DOGS NSW was proud to be part of such a positive day celebrating dogs, responsible ownership, and the joy they bring to our lives.

The 2025 Royal Canin 50th Anniversary International Spring Fair
WORDS: Christina Rafton Chair DOGS NSW Spring Fair Committee
Preparations for the “Spring Fair” quite literally started immediately after the elections for the Chair by the DOGS NSW Board last November 2024, as this being the 50th year anniversary of the event, it would require some special planning. We wanted to present the best show event over 3 days that YOU, the exhibitor, could experience.
The overall entries were hugely enhanced by the 25 Specialty shows on the Thursday and an additional Specialty Show on the Friday. Thank you all so much to the Clubs who joined us with their Shows, including the additional Spitz Club Show, held in reverse alphabetical order on the Friday, to coincide with the CACIB Group 5 judging. The Final numbers resulted in totals of 1391 breeds and 69 Neuters on Friday; 1547 on Saturday and 1392 on Sunday, which also had 23 Breeder’s Teams and 291 Sweepstakes entries over the three days. There was a total of 4713 entries, with exhibitors from far and wide, on grounds that, despite very heavy rain the previous week, looked absolutely spectacular. No wonder the atmosphere around the rings and on the field was electric!
The 2025 panel of judges exceeded all our expectations: Mr Frank Kane (UK), Mr Rony Doedijns (Netherlands), Mr Sean and Mrs Cathy Delmar (Ireland), Mr Sei Ishiro Ishimaru (Japan), Mrs Audrey Hauptfleisch (Sth Africa), Mr Raymond Yurick (Canada), Mr Gerardo Paolucci (Argentina), and Mr Martin Skeffington (Ireland). As in previous years, the “Neuter Championship Show” was held Friday during lunch, with various Groups being judged by Mrs Jeannie Montford (NSW) and Mr Aramis Lim (SA). This Best In Show event was held before the Best In Show at the CACIB show, to heighten the importance of the Neuters Show.
29 - 31 August 2025
The usual Friday, Saturday & Sunday ‘Happy Hour’ saw some wonderful people giving of their time to help: Nikki Anastas, John Bryson, Mick Drekovic, Lynette Brown, Stephanie Hanna, Sue McFadden, Kirsten Henderson, Dayna Johnston, Darren Learmont-Smith, with the preparation of the Sausage sizzle and drinks, raffle tickets, etc. Thank you all so very much.
Huge Congratulations to all the Sweepstakes winners and to the Judges over the three days. A sincere thank you for giving your time and expertise to officiate, whilst not being able to enter or show dogs yourself on those days: Mrs Lanie Knox, Mr Aramis Lim (SA), Professor Brian Corbitt, Ms Louise Thomas Van Der Weide, Mrs Jeannie Montfrord, Mrs Diane Fenton, Mrs Kaye Eldred, Mrs Pat Hall and Mrs Carolyn Butler.
Spring Fair would not be complete without the Sports Discipline events and we thank those Committees for organising these events. This year Belinda Mitchell oversaw, with the assistance of Mary Webster, the new and very popular Sprint Dog™ events on both Friday and again Saturday. Leah Perry and Nic Mather from Queensland put the multitude of dogs through the runs, but regrettably high winds curtailed the later Saturday afternoon runs sadly.
The Obedience Trial was conducted on the German Shepherd Oval on the Saturday with NSW Judges Mr Ron Probert, Maryanne Fazekas, Thiery Bennani, Jill Kaldor, Charles Giles, Christiane Diebler and Catherine Crouch assessing the various levels of this discipline over two events.
The judges for Best and Runner Up Best In Show, including Neuters, for each day, only awarded those classes. All other International Judges, qualified with Best In Show status, assessed either Baby, Minor Puppy and Puppy or Junior, Intermediate, Australian Bred and Open in Show. This allowed for earlier podium photos and drive home for the winners, rather than waiting till the very end to begin that process.
The Junior Handler classes winners were Harper Meehan (7 to under 10 years) assessed by Judge Jorja Baxter; Imogen Steer (10 to under 13 years) winning under Judge Kaitlyn Willis and Samantha Page (13 to under 19 years) winning under Judge Jade Morse-Roberts.
The selection of the ultimate top winner from the above mentioned age winners and Charlotte Shah’s top winning Lady & Gentlemen Handler was selected by Raymond Yurick (Canada), having been a professional handler himself, awarded the ultimate winner to Samantha Page (Qld).
Incredible dogs
Sunday saw the Agility Trial judged by Jason McFarlane and Robyn Jones assessing their entrants.
A huge thank you once again to our fabulous sponsors Royal Canin and Plush Puppy, along with Blingy Dog Leads, Delete, Divetalac, Orivet, Vineyard Vet, Show Manager and DOGS NSW.
The photographers covering the shows this year were expanded in number and headed by Chris Chou of ‘Best Shot’, Dana Russo, fulfilling the requirements of photographic records of winners for the days!
To Virginia Gagan-Wilson, Anthony Khamis and all our super-efficient office staff – we literally could not run these shows without your work. And lastly, to the most amazing groundsmen - compliments were flowing from exhibitors and judges as to the superb condition of the rings and your ability to make the whole preparation of the event seem effortless!
Lastly, but most importantly, a show is only as good as the workers behind the scenes. To this, thanks must go our show representative, Gail Marsh who went above and beyond; the office secretariat with Katrina Long plus Jeremy and Ruth Cook of ShowManager. And finally, thanks especially to one amazing ‘team’ of committee members: Mrs Tanya Scales, Mrs Lynda Brandt, Mr Brad Santas and Ms Rebecca Rafton.
Thank you all, here’s hoping we can see you all again in 2026!

THE INTERNATIONAL JUDGES OF SPRING FAIR 2025
International insights, standout moments, and their reflections on the future of pedigree dogs
The Spring Fair once again proved to be a highlight on the Australian canine calendar, welcoming an esteemed panel of international judges who shared glowing feedback on the quality of dogs, the professionalism of the organisation, and the camaraderie of exhibitors.
From Canada to South Africa, Ireland to Japan, each judge brought a unique perspective, yet common themes emerged: worldclass showgrounds, deep quality across the breeds, and the need to continue promoting pedigree dogs for future generations. Meet each one and their personal views of Spring Fair:
President of the Irish Kennel Club, Mr Delmar is steeped in Terrier heritage. Mrs Delmar is a previous Chair of The Irish Kennel Club with vast experience as an FCI International Judge for over 30 years in 32 countries.
• What they looked forward to: Looking forward to judging in Australia again.
• Standout moment: Terrier groups with more finalists than expected. “Usually two or three; here, five or six.”
• Difference in judging: Praised Australia’s dedicated showgrounds: “It makes shows part of society.”
• On pedigrees: Predictability of size, coat and temperament is key. Suggested interactive awards for the public, like Ireland’s Golden Paw Awards.
With over 35 years in Beagles, Mrs Hauptfleisch brings deep knowledge of hounds and working breeds.
• What she looked forward to: Sportsmanship and large numbers of dogs.
• Standout moment: Bulldogs with open nostrils, sound movement and health.
“They were exactly what the breed should be.”
• Difference in judging: Greater depth in young dogs, creating exciting finals.
• On pedigrees: Public education is essential, and so is finding ways to engage younger exhibitors.
Mr Rony Doedijns – NETHERLANDS
Breeds Involved: Finnish Spitz, Tibetan Terriers
Role: All Breeds Judge, former Director of the Dutch Kennel Club
Judging in 72 countries, Mr Doedijns is known for his breadth of knowledge.
• What he looked forward to: The scale of the Spring Fair. “In Europe I judge 90 dogs a day. Here it can be 200.”
• Standout moment: A junior German Shorthaired Pointer bitch, plus excellent Siberian Huskies, Shiba Inu and Samoyeds.
• Difference in judging: Large classes without critiques make for faster but equally competitive rings.
• On pedigrees: “We must return to basics, function and soundness. Always remember the purpose of the dog.”
Mr Sei Ichiro Ishimaru ~ JAPAN
Breeds Involved: Italian Greyhound
Kennel Prefix: Flashshower
An All Breeds Judge, recognised by the JKC/FCI, Mr Ishimaru has judged extensively in 31 countries, at international shows such as Westminster Kennel Dog Show, FCI World Dog Show, plus many Breed Specialty Shows and FCI International Dog Shows. He is President of The Japanese Kennel Club Southern Tokyo Italian Greyhound Club, which is the only Italian Greyhound Specialty Club in Asia.
Mr Frank Kane ~ UNITED KINGDOM
Breeds Involved: Cocker Spaniels, American Cockers, Sealyham Terriers, Beagles, Great Danes, Afghan Hounds
Kennel Prefix: Hirontower
A respected UK Judge and Crufts commentator, Mr Kane is no stranger to Australian rings.
• What he looked forward to: Returning to Sydney, a city he calls a favourite.
• Standout moment: The Gundog group, “All eight finalists could have been winners.”
• Difference in judging: Four days of showing is demanding, but the atmosphere was “like dog shows of old.”
• On pedigrees: Shows must feel inviting and enjoyable, and negativity on social media needs to be tempered.
Mr Gerardo Paolucci ~ ARGENTINA
Breeds Involved: Terriers, Setters, Bearded Collies, Schnauzers, Old English Sheepdogs
Kennel Prefix: B.I.S, Bisvar, Brava’s
Breeder of over 280 champions, Mr Paolucci is known worldwide for his Terriers and Schnauzers.
• What he looked forward to: The evenness of quality across all groups.
• Standout moment: Recognising a Pointer bitch he had awarded Best Puppy in Show two years ago.
• Difference in judging: Australian shows are longer and more intensive.
• On pedigrees: “We must engage young people, even through schools, to safeguard the future.”
Mr Skeffington has judged Terriers across Europe and America, including at the Staffordshire Bull Terrier Club of America. Previously only been to Adelaide.
• What he looked forward to: Quality Terrier and Spitz entries.
• Standout moment: A Scottish Terrier with “loads of oomph” and perfect type.
• Difference in judging: Depth of quality even in large classes impressed him.
• On pedigrees: “Education is vital. Pedigrees give families predictability, reducing the risk of abandonment. We must counter the myths spread by backyard breeders.”
Mr Raymond Yurick ~ CANADA
Breeds Involved: Whippets, Bichon Frise, Fox Terriers, Poodles, Bouvier des Flandres
Kennel Prefix: Brushwood
A seasoned handler and now judge, Mr Yurick has visited Australia for over ten years.
• What he looked forward to: The camaraderie of exhibitors. “Australians always clap and congratulate one another; it’s really special.”
• Standout moment: A young Pointer bitch who was “raw, natural, and exuding type.”
• Difference in judging: He noted Dobermans in Australia appear longer in silhouette with natural ears and tails, unlike cropped styles elsewhere.
• On pedigrees: Show the joy and camaraderie of showing: it’s what sets pedigree culture apart.
Judges’ Shared Refections: A Celebration of Dogs & Community
Across the board, the judges agreed that the Spring Fair offered a worldclass event with outstanding dogs, superb facilities, and a welcoming, sportsmanlike atmosphere.
“This feels like dog shows of old,” said Mr Frank Kane (UNITED KINGDOM). “The camaraderie, the quality and the atmosphere are what makes it special.”
The judges were unanimous in their praise of the Spring Fair:
• Organisation & Grounds: Described as worldclass, with professional stewards and spacious rings.
• Sportsmanship: The camaraderie of exhibitors stood out as uniquely Australian.
• Dogs: From Gundogs to Terriers, Spitz to Bulldogs, judges saw depth and consistency across the groups.
• Future Focus: Education, youth engagement, and public awareness remain vital to ensuring pedigree dogs thrive.
The Spring Fair once again demonstrated why it stands as one of the premier showcases of pedigree dogs. Not just in Australia, but globally.

Siberian Husky
History
The Siberian Husky breed was originally developed by the Chukchi people of northeastern Asia as an endurance sled dog. In 1909, the first large numbers of these Chukchi dogs were brought to Alaska to compete in the long distance All-Alaska Sweepstakes races, and the Alaskan dog drivers quickly recognised the ability of these Huskies from Siberia.
In the winter of 1925, when a diphtheria epidemic broke out in the isolated town of Nome, Alaska, a relay of dog teams brought life saving serum from distant Nenana. The heroic endeavour earned national prominence for the drivers and their dogs. One of these drivers, Leonard Seppala, took his team of Siberian Huskies (pictured left), descendants of the original imports from Siberia, to the United States on a personal appearance tour. Whilst there, he competed in sled dog races and again proved the superiority of Siberian Huskies over native dogs. Pioneer fanciers acquired foundation stock and the breed was recognised by the American Kennel Club in 1930.
Appearance
“The Siberian Husky is a medium-sized working dog, quick and light on his feet and free and graceful in action. His moderately compact and well-furred body, erect ears and brush tail suggest his Northern heritage. His characteristic gait is smooth and seemingly effortless. He performs his original function in harness most capably, carrying a light load at a moderate speed over great distances. His body proportions and form reflect this basic balance of power, speed and endurance. The males of the breed are masculine, but never coarse; the bitches are feminine but without weakness of structure. In proper condition, with muscles firm and well developed, the breed does not carry excess weight.” 1.
Temperament
The Siberian Husky has a delightful temperament, affectionate but not fawning. This gentle and friendly disposition may be a heritage from the past, since the Chukchi people held their dogs in great esteem, housed them in the family
shelters and encouraged their children to play with them. Today, it is charming to observe the special appeal that Siberian Huskies and children have for each other. The Siberian Husky is alert, eager to please, and adaptable. Their intelligence has been proven, but their independent spirit may at times challenge your ingenuity.
“He does not display the possessive qualities of the guard dog, nor is he overly suspicious of strangers or aggressive with other dogs. Some measure of reserve and dignity may be expected in the mature dog. His intelligence, tractability, and eager disposition make him an agreeable companion and willing worker.” 2.
Health
The Siberian Husky is generally a very healthy breed with few inherited health issues. When bred and raised by reputable breeders and well cared for they are relatively “maintenance free.”
Hip Dysplasia is fairly uncommon in Siberians, however, some cases are now being reported. Eye problems such as Glaucoma, Cataracts and Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) occur in many breeds and occasionally in Siberians as well.
Grooming
Siberian Huskies will shed their coat twice a year. Until you experience a Siberian coat drop, only then will you fully comprehend how much coat they lose. Owners must be dedicated to grooming, especially when shedding.
Question: It’s so hot - should I clip my Siberian? Answer: NO... as their undercoat acts as insulation, helping to keep them warm as well as cool.
Suitability
While the Siberian Husky is a fun, free, spirited breed they are not suitable for everyone as they require both physical and mental stimulation daily. They are not happy to just sit in the backyard, as they prefer to be with their family. An active family, who can take their dog for nice long walks and who are dedicated to training and socialising their dog, are most suited to this breed.
Suitability
The Siberian Husky can be headstrong and at times, a challenge, so training may need to be creative. It is strongly recommended to train and socialise this wonderful, ree-spirited breed, starting with puppy preschool and followed by a canine good citizen program or similar.
The versatility of the Siberian Husky makes them an agreeable companion to people of all ages and varying interests. While capable of showing strong affection for their family, the Siberian Husky is not usually a one person dog. They exhibit no fear or suspicion of strangers, and will greet guests cordially. The Siberian Husky may unwittingly act as a deterrent to those ignorant of their true hospitable nature, however, it is not a guarding dog.
Predatory instincts in the Siberian Husky are strong. While the Siberian is normally gentle and friendly with people and other dogs, owners MUST be aware that small animals in and round the home, such as rabbits, birds, guinea pigs and cats, are potential victims of their strong predatory instinct. They are swift, cunning, and patient in their hunting skills.
There is one final characteristic of the Siberian Husky which we must point out - their desire to run! There are many breeds of dogs which, when let out in the morning, will sit in the front yard all day. Not the Siberian Husky. Their heritage has endowed them with the desire to run and their conformation has given them the ability to enjoy it effortlessly. But, one quick lap across a busy street could be the last run they enjoy, ever. Because of this, we strongly urge that NO Siberian Husky ever be allowed unrestrained freedom. Instead, for their own protection, they should be confined or under control at all times. Sufficient exercise for proper development and well-being may be obtained on a leash, in a large enclosure, or best of all, in harness.
Article submitted by The Siberian Husky Club of NSW Inc (May 2015) 1.& 2. Extracts from DOGS AUSTRALIA Breed Standard for Siberian Husky
Siberian Huskies were developed to pull sleds by the Chukchi people of Siberia thousands of years ago. The Chukchi people required dogs that could survive in extremely low temperatures, pull a sled tirelessly day after day, have a love for people to keep the children warm during winter, have a high prey drive to catch its own food and to be intelligent enough to take instruction, but also independently minded and analytical enough to not lead a team into danger. These are traits we see in today’s Siberian Husky which is the combination of an iron-hard working sled dog and a lovable companion.
Siberian Huskies gained worldwide fame in the 1925 serum run to Nome. Teams of up to 20 dogs ran a relay to bring lifesaving serum from Nenana to Nome through the harshest of winter conditions. 20 mushers and over 150 Siberian Huskies transported the diphtheria antitoxin 674 miles in 127 hours to save the people of Nome. The famous Togo led Leonhard Seppala’s team through the most dangerous leg of the relay covering almost 260 miles. The bond between Seppala and Togo is a symbol of bravery and determination in one of history’s most heroic efforts. Togo’s incredible stamina, intelligence and loyalty were vital in saving the town of Nome. The qualities he carried are still being bred for in the working line Siberian Husky today.
The first competitive sled dog race was the 408 mile All-Alaska Sweepstakes held in 1908. Long distance sled dog racing was born. The Iditarod began in 1973 and is the world’s premier sledding race held each year in March. The trail follows the 1925 serum run relay and covers approximately 1049 miles. The Iditarod showcases mushing and sled dog culture which is an integral part of sledding history, and a culture which is still strived for today in sledding communities.
Teams of Siberian Huskies were used for centuries for transportation and exploration to remote locations in harsh conditions that may be impossible to access by any other means of transport. When sledding phased out as a necessity due to the development of vehicles such as snow mobiles, highways and trucks for transportation, mushing continued for recreational purposes, still allowing Siberian Huskies to do exactly what they were bred for.
Sledding has developed and been improvised through-out the world to suit a variety of conditions. Due to the dry and warmer conditions in Australia sled dog racing is predominantly dry-land with one snow race each year. As sled dog racing is for the most part a pastime in today’s world, mushers gather for the pure enjoyment their dogs experience from sledding.
Dry land sledding consists of a musher (the person driving the team), and from 1 to 8 dogs in a team. A scooter is used for 1 to 2 dogs, and a rig for 3 or more dogs. The equipment is specifically designed for dog sled racing. Each dog has a harness, and is connected to a gang line which is a cable filled line that runs from the scooter, rig or sled to the lead dogs tug on their harness.
As the sport has evolved in recent years, further classes have been introduced. These classes include bikejoring where 1 to 2 dogs pull the musher on a push bike, and canicross which is a person running with a single dog. There are also junior, veteran and novice classes which cater for both mushers and dogs at various experience levels. Class distances range from 2km to 8km depending on the size of the team. Experienced and trained dog teams can reach an average speed of over 30km/hr which is quite impressive.
Sled dog racing is primarily held in forests on dirt trails or roads. State forests are typically used for training and events due to allowing dogs, and having campsites for clubs and mushers to utilise. Plus the trails are generally maintained which is vital to ensure the safety of the dogs and mushers while racing. In New South Wales, Wingello and Belanglo Forests are frequently used for racing.
One part of dog sledding that has not changed throughout the years is the bond between the musher and their dogs. There must be a high level of trust between each other to ensure the team and their driver travel around the trails safely. Commands are used to tell the dogs which direction to go, when they need to change pace, and when they need to pass another team or a distraction such as wildlife near the trail.
The dogs at the front of a team are the lead dogs. They set the pace, listen and follow the mushers commands. They also need to be able to read the trail and make independent decisions such as stopping the team if there is danger ahead. Behind the lead dogs are the swing dogs. Swing dogs are generally leaders or leaders in training, and are responsible for swinging the team around corners. Wheel dogs are positioned in front of the rig or sled which is the most physically demanding position. Wheel dogs tend to be the most powerful dogs on the team. For larger teams, dogs positioned between the swing and wheel dogs are called team dogs.
There are two clubs in New South Wales who both hold a number of races and events throughout winter each year. Both clubs are welcoming of enthusiasts interested in sledding, and are willing to provide information on the sport including the benefits for Siberian Huskies to fulfil their original function in harness. The Siberian Husky Club of NSW are proud to honour the breed’s origins by hosting sledding events and showcasing the breed’s purpose.
Siberian Huskies are a high energy and active breed which require ample exercise due to their drive and will to work. They were bred for endurance and enjoy being challenged physically and mentally. Utilising their natural instincts to train and compete in sledding allows them to lead a happy and fulfilled life.

Obedience TRIAL
30 August 2025
We shared the day with our Sprint Dog Trial and I have to congratulate all competitors from both disciplines on how considerate they were with each other, especially as the parking was somewhat restricted, due to the wet conditions of the normal parking areas.
It was an extremely windy day which may have upset some of the dogs’ performance and the magpies occasionally took umbrage at competitors in the UDX ring, but most braved it, so we had very few absentees.
We conducted Two Obedience Trials on the same day and this was successful for entries and our competitors, so we may do this again next year.
A big thank you to our Show Manager Suzanne Hutchins, Trial Secretary Shanelle Corben, and all our Committee members that helped behind the scenes on the day.
Thank you to our Major sponsor, Royal Canin. Also thank you to Rebecca Rafton of the Spring Fair Committee, who organised the beautiful rosettes and ribbons.
We will not forget our Judges that had to adjudicate all day in that terrible wind. Thank you for your professionalism. Thank you to DOGSNSW representative, Bob Watters. Thanks must go to Bill, the best Raffle Ticket seller there is, who helped to raise funds to offset some of our expenses. Last, but by no means least, I applaud our volunteer stewards that did a great job. We could not run a Trial without you.
Congratulations to the winners on the day. Your dogs were amazing in such tough conditions.
It was good to see many Conformation members taking part in the SprintDog™ Trials. If you have time next year also come and look at the skills showcased by our Obedience dogs. It may inspire you further with your beautiful dogs.

Agility & JUMPING TRIAL
31 August 2025
The 2025 Spring Fair Agility Trial was held on 31 August on the German Shepherd Rings at DOGS NSW Grounds. After many postponed competitions, due to wet weather through winter, it was fabulous to have a glorious day to be out with our dogs. There was a definite spring in everyone’s step as they walked the courses set by the judges, Jason McFarlane and Robyn Jones. Jason is one of our newer judges and all the competitors enjoyed his courses. Jason was able to stay focused on his judging and dodge the swooping magpie! Congratulations!
It was clear that the handlers and dogs were competition ready as the standard was extremely high with well executed “blind, front and rear crosses” as well as “backside sends”, “threadles” and “threadle wraps” used to negotiate the course challenges. There were many fabulous runs to watch. I particularly enjoyed watching the dogs attempt the distance challenge in Open Jumping while the handlers performed balancing acts along the edge of the distance line. Agility competitions take a lot of work to run. The help on the day by the handlers that stepped in to help set courses, scribe, assemble, run leads, time keep and pick up bars was appreciated by the committee and the judges. Packing up at the end of the day can be difficult if left to just a few people, however, when many help, the task is much easier. Thank you to those that stayed behind to help.
Lastly, I cannot forget to thank Dawn and Vicki Case for supplying the home-cooked snacks to help the stewards throughout the day.

DEBUTS
SprintDogTM
AT THE 2025 SPRING FAIR
Words Ashlee Peck | Images: Nikki Taylor Photography
For the first time, SprintDog™ was included on the program at the iconic 2025 Royal Canin 50th Anniversary International Spring Fair in Sydney.
Organised by the NSW Convenor of SprintDog™, Belinda Mitchell, and her band of merry helpers, this exciting new sport featured on both Friday and Saturday. It drew plenty of attention, plenty of wagging tails, and plenty of breathless, well-dressed handlers running between show ring and sprint chute!
The Spring Fair debut was met with overwhelming enthusiasm, with demand so high that a ballot was needed to ensure a fair opportunity for those wanting to participate in these events. Time constraints allowed for 130 entries on Friday and 100 on Saturday, with both days receiving over 250 ballot entries each. It was wonderful to see such excitement for a sport that any dog can participate with enjoyment - most dogs can run 100 metres!
SprintDog™ is not a competition, with dogs accruing points over multiple trials based on their speed. The only winners are the happy dogs and handlers. Across the two trials, over 200 qualifications were gained, and more than 35 dogs became eligible for a title.
This achievement was only possible thanks to the tireless efforts of many volunteers (see pictured above). In the weeks leading up to the event a small band of workers organised entries, catalogues, equipment, ribbons, and more; and then kept everything running smoothly across both days. A special thank you goes to Leah Perry (QLD), Nic Mather (QLD), Helen Mosslar (ACT), and Belinda Mitchell (NSW) for judging, lure driving, and most importantly, mentoring so many people from across NSW. Their efforts make the sport as successful, safe, and fun as possible, and one at which many dogs can successfully earn a title.
The track team also deserves recognition, with members travelling from Sydney, Newcastle, Tamworth, Grafton, Queanbeyan, and the ACT. The spirit of generosity and teamwork shone through at every level, reflecting the true heart of SprintDog™ as a community sport.

Keep your pets safe this festive season
Dr Anne Fawcett from the University of Sydney’s School of Veterinary Science offers her advice for caring for your pets throughout the festive season.
The festive season can be a busy time of year for humans, but it’s also a very busy time for our companion animals. Summertime is often associated with holidays, social occasions and severe weather, all of which can pose risks to our furry, feathered and scaly friends. Festive social events are invariably associated with tasty foods, often placed within reach of companion animals, which, if not kept under observation, tend to help themselves. Unfortunately, many festive foods are potentially dangerous to pets.
Dangerous foods for pets
• Chocolate contains caffeine and theobromine, which are toxic and potentially fatal to dogs and cats. The darker the chocolate, the more toxic it is.
• Grapes, raisins and sultanas can cause irreversible kidney failure in dogs and need to be kept well out of reach. For the same reason, animals should not be fed or have access to mincemeat pies or fruit cakes/loafs.
• Fatty foods like cheese, ham, pork crackling, bacon, turkey skin, lamb, sausages and the gristle off your steak can lead to nasty diarrhoea but may also trigger life-threatening pancreatitis in some pets.
• Bones can cause constipation, especially if animals aren’t used to eating these, and cooked bones can shatter, causing perforation of the intestines.
• Onions and garlic can be toxic to dogs and cats, and lead to life-threatening anaemia. Onion toxicity can occur in dogs who have ingested a single onion bhaji, or those who simply eat the onions off the barbecue (risking scalding in the process).
• Macadamia nuts are toxic to dogs and can cause dramatic clinical signs including blindness. In small dogs and cats, nuts can also cause gastrointestinal obstruction.
• Food scraps and garbage can be very tempting to dogs and cats. Double bag the rubbish and keep it well out of reach of pets, which have been known to eat kebab skewers, cutlery, plastic kitchen wrap and compost.

Dangerous foods for pets
• Dietary change alone is enough to cause vomiting and diarrhoea in some pets. If you are taking your pets along with you on holidays or to parties, bring their regular diet.
• Ingestion of most parts of the lily plant, including flowers and leaves, can cause irreversible kidney damage in cats. Cats seen licking or eating lilies should be taken to a veterinarian as an emergency.
• Do not leave food gifts under the Christmas tree. Pets have been known to steal and unwrap food gifts.
Toxic Tips
If you see your pet eat something that is potentially toxic, take them to your local or emergency veterinarian immediately as your vet may be able to induce vomiting. This can prevent surgery later on, but it needs to be done immediately as there is a short window of time (sometimes as little as 30 minutes) where this is effective.
If your pet ate a food item, bring any packaging with you. If it is a plant item, bring the plant or take a photo of the plant including flowers and leaves to assist in identification.
Chewing Hazards
• Kebab sticks
• Cutlery coated in meaty juices on
• String off ham/turkey
• Tinsel
• Small toys
• Batteries
Any of the above, and more, can cause life-threatening gastrointestinal blockages. Take your pet to your local or emergency veterinarian within two to four hours to induce vomiting.
Lay off the Hard Stuff
Alcohol and recreational drugs are dangerous to companion animals and they should never be exposed to these substances. Animals could ingest these substances directly or groom them off their fur. If you suspect that your pet has been exposed to alcohol or drugs, take them to your local or emergency veterinarian immediately

Festive Anxiety in Pets
The presence of unfamiliar humans in the house or yard, changes in routine, loud conversation or music, and fireworks can be very stressful for some dogs and cats.
• Never force pets to be social if they are not in the mood.
• Always allow pets a quiet escape where they can withdraw from social activities.
• Some pets may be better off staying home if you’re going to someone else’s place, or boarding if the party is coming to you.
• Pets with phobias of loud noises or fireworks may benefit from medication, but it needs to be given pre-emptively. See your vet if you suspect your pet suffers from anxiety.
Travelling with Pets
Some animals benefit from medication to prevent motion sickness. You will need a prescription from your vet. Organise a consultation before you travel.
• Don’t feed pets a large meal immediately before travel.
• Make sure your pet’s tick prevention is up to date. Use a reputable, APVMA (Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority) registered product that is proven to be effective.
• Find out the details of the nearest local and 24-hour emergency vets before you travel, so you know where to go in case of an emergency.
• Take a supply of your pet’s regular food as dietary change can lead to gastrointestinal upsets.
• Ensure that your contact details are up to date on the NSW Companion Animal Registry, or the relevant State or Territory Registry if travelling interstate with your pet.
Prevent Heat Stress
According to the Australian Bureau of Meteorology, climate change has led to an increased frequency of “extreme heat events”. Dogs in particular are prone to heat stress, which can be fatal.
• Ensure all companion animals have unimpeded access to fresh water.
• Ensure all companion animals have access to shade throughout the day (remember that shade moves).
• Exercise dogs only in the cooler parts of the day (early morning or late evening), and don’t over-exert them (dogs are not the best judges of when they need to slow down and can die from heat stress secondary to over-exertion).

Prevent Heat Stress
• Flatter-faced “brachycephalic” breeds, such as Pugs and Bulldogs, are at particular risk and should be kept indoors, in a cool environment.
• Never leave animals unattended in motor vehicles, or on the back of cars like utes.
• Avoid walking dogs on hot roads/footpaths as these can cause burns to the paw pads.
• Consider getting a small portable pool so your dog can lie in cool water and reduce their body temperature in a shady space.
Smoke from Bush Fires
With bushfire smoke an almost daily reality for many Australians this summer, considering how you exercise your pet or expose them to the smoke is important.
• Dogs need regular exercise, but during high smoke and smoke haze days keep this to a minimum. Aim for ‘clean air’ breaks.
• Avoid exercising your pet outdoors at the peak of any smoke incidents.
• Be aware of any pets with pre-existing airway conditions or heart disease. They are particularly vulnerable to the effects of smoke. FEATURE
Smoke from Bush Fires
(continued)
• For animals in hutches or aviaries, it is important they are kept well-ventilated.
• Ensure you regularly change your pets’ water supply, which can be contaminated with ash.
• Wash your pets more regularly, as the ash can stick to feathers and fur.
• If your pet is displaying signs of struggling with smoke, take then to the vet.
Pets Owners
& STRESS
Six in 10 pet owners reveal they prefer to spend time with their pets when feeling stressed, according to new survey
If you would rather hug your pet than talk to your partner after a stressful day then you’re not alone. A new global survey of over 30,000 pet owners,(1) commissioned by Mars, the leading pet care business, and Calm, a leading mental health company, found that the majority of pet owners (58%) prefer to spend time with their pet when feeling stressed – more than those who say their partners (32%), family (23%), or even children or friends (both 18%). In fact, 83% of people surveyed believe their pet has positively impacted their mental wellbeing.
Mars and Calm have teamed up to celebrate the special bond with pets through a series of pet-inspired content for pet lovers to support their wellbeing.
The global survey across 20 markets, highlights the powerful ways our pets improve our mental health and wellbeing. From encouraging us to switch off in our day-to-day with breaks from screens, work and chores, to offering silent comfort when words feel too much, the findings paint a striking picture of how pets are helping millions of people around the world find peace in an always-on world.
Pets: the silent wellbeing guides always by our side
Sometimes, it’s not what they do – it’s just that they are there. More than half of pet owners (56%) say their pets provide company without the need to talk during stressful times. While others find chatting to their pet a help – with nearly a quarter (23%) saying their pet provides a space for them to express worries or concerns without expecting a response. A huge 84% of pet owners say the simple presence of their pet is relaxing, offering a sense of calm that doesn’t require words or actions.
“While we love our pets, we often don’t realise how much they give back,” said Dr. Tammie King, a specialist in human-animal interaction and Senior Research Manager at the Waltham Petcare Science Institute. “Reframing your pet’s daily ‘interruptions’ as loving reminders to pause, breathe and be present can be a powerful wellness tool. Research shows that touch-based pet interactions can boost oxytocin levels in humans.(2) The findings of this survey will help more people reflect on and acknowledge the little wellbeing moments pets nudge us towards on a daily basis.”
Pets Owners & STRESS
A look, wag or a boop: the survey also reveals how our pets’ behaviours give us daily nudges towards better wellbeing habits:
• Stepping away from the daily grind: Almost eight in 10 (78%) say their pet reminds them to pause and take a break from work, chores or tasks, with 50% saying this happens daily – a gentle reminder to stop, breathe and reset
• Calming the mind: 73% of owners say their pet encourages them to stop overthinking or worrying – helping them feel calmer and more centred
• Time in the great outdoors: 73% of pet owners say their pet encourages them to spend time outside, turning walks with a pet into wellbeing
• Even screens take a backseat when pets are around: 77% say their pet encourages them to take a break away from screens – and for half (50%) it’s a daily reminder to unplug, a vital counter to constant scrolling and digital burnout
Dr. Chris Mosunic, Chief Clinical Officer at Calm said:
“We know that small, intentional moments of calm can have a big impact on our overall wellbeing, and our pets have an incredible way of guiding us there. A quick dog walk, or cat cuddle at our desk when they stroll in front of the screen, can provide a simple moment to reset and recharge. We’re proud to partner with Mars and bring this data to the forefront to highlight the potential of our bond with pets and help more people discover the wonderful wellbeing benefits our relationship with pets can bring.”
The survey marks the launch of a first-ofits-kind partnership between Mars and Calm which aims to explore and celebrate the deep connection between people and pets as a force for everyday wellbeing.
Turning insight into action, Mars and Calm have teamed up to create new content to help support wellbeing while nurturing the bond with your pet. The Mars x Calm content collection is a series of pet-inspired content to help you relax, reflect and recharge. This is Calm’s first collection created just for pet lovers and inspired by the mutual relationship between people and their pets.
To celebrate the partnership, Mars and Calm launched a social search to find touching stories from pet owners of their pets that showcase the power of the human-animal bond. Pet owners have the chance for their pets’ story to become the inspiration for exclusive Calm content on kinship.com/petsandwellbeing.*
As part of this search, Mars and Calm launched My Pet Guru – an interactive quiz available on Kinship. The tool identifies one of six pet wellbeing superpowers based on responses to five simple questions, designed to help pet owners recognise and celebrate the unique ways their pets support emotional and mental wellbeing.
