Train Your Dog to be Nosey

My name is Peta Conwell and I’d like to tell you about my journey into the canine sport of Nosework. This fast growing sport was created to mimic professional detection dog tasks. It started with my tiny Maltese Woody. He was 9, had recently partially torn his cruciate ligament and had 2 eye surgeries (he's now had 4!), but he still had a great joy in life. I read a quote which said that you should give dogs a job, or they'll find one and you might not like what they do! I then heard about Nosework classes and it was described to me that it was like finding food in boxes. “Great” I thought. “Woody is a walking stomach, so that's something he can do!” So I signed up. The benefits for dogs of all kinds is amazing. It’s been a game that Woody and I play when the scary storms are overhead. I play these basic games at the vet to reduce some fear. I play them when it's raining or too hot to go out for a walk. When we do go on walks now, we have ‘sniffathons’ where we stop and sniff all the sniffs. We don't go as far, but my dogs are more relaxed and sleep better after an hour long sniff, than after an hour long walk.

Photos courtesy of Lisa Miller

Nosework has given my mini poodle confidence to work away from me. Its given my anxious/reactive Bichon Frise the skills to be brave in scary situations. I've seen shut down dogs come alive when they are allowed to use their innate abilities within a dog safe environment. There are huge benefits for people too. I've known 7 year old kids who were terrified of dogs successfully work a huge Belgian Malinois in a beginner search. I have seen overarching joy in both humans and dogs when they both find something they can do together which is fun.

It gets better! You can now compete! The structured game of Nosework was developed by some clever dog trainers in the United States (Jill-Marie O'Brien, Amy Herot and Ron Gaunt) who created the National Association of Canine Scent Work. Noseworks was brought to Australia by Marion Brand and the Australian Canine Scent Work is the ruling body currently for Australian Nosework competitions with some hard work done in all the Australian states, and specifically by Debbie Lamprecht in Queensland. My little Woody, nearly blind and at 13 years of age, has passed and been certified on all 3 competition odours. When I teach Nosework, I aim to show students how to read their dogs' body language. When does a dog needs support? When has a dog found odour? When do they need you to back off? I can help you to learn the ropes. With the Australian National Kennel Club soon to be running competitions, there will be trials in Queensland before long. Don't want to compete? No problem. Have fun with your dog and socialise with other dog people. I have a Blue Card and can work with children, but a parent must be present. Contact me for more information or to book into a Course. They are only an hour long and I run two back to back Courses on Tuesday evening at Dogs Queensland’s Durack Sports Grounds.

family to join in with. You can bring any dog of any age, any size, any fitness, socialised or not (humans too). It’s even OK if you’re as fit as a butchers dog, but please don’t bring the cat! You can be part of a team or be a solo challenger to enter The Kryptonite Challenge obstacle course. Don’t stress if you want to be part of a team and none of your friends, family or colleagues wishes to enter. We get lots of solo challengers and if you wish we will help you join a team on the day. Being part of a team will be a massive help to get up, over and through some of the obstacles. All team members will need to pull together and help each other to the finish line. Team size and numbers are totally up to you. K-9 is the first event of its kind in Australia and they are becoming hugely popular. You can check out the reviews and photos on our website. A Sheepdog from Belgium: One breed, four varieties GROENENDAEL – long hair black LAEKENOIS – curly (tousled) coat fawn MALINOIS – short coat fawn with black face mask. TERVUEREN – long hair fawn or grey with black face mask The four varieties of the Belgian Shepherd Dog (BSD) are named in relation to Belgian villages: Groenendael, Laekenois, Mechelar (Malinois) and Tervuren. The BSD was officially recognised in the 1880s, when it was decided to pronounce a national Belgian breed of dog characterised by the typical dogs seen at work in Belgium. Distinguishing it from the continental shepherd dogs seen across Europe, the unique native shepherd dog of Belgium was

typically square and medium-sized with triangular ears, differing only in texture, colour and length of coat. In the late 1800’s these typical dogs were gathered together by dog enthusiasts, and the ones judged as the most beautiful and also having an excellent work ethic were selected as the ‘ideal’. These critiques formed the original BSD Breed Standard, and in 1891, the first Belgian Shepherd Dog Club was formed in Belgium.

In general, the BSD is an obedient and multi-talented breed of dog which can excel at most tasks asked of it, whether that be as a serious dog for working, or as a fun family companion who will also ardently protect those they love. However, their intelligence can also make the BSD difficult to manage if the owner lacks experience with the breed, or does not provide their BSD with daily physical and environmental enrichment activities.

7

The type of work the BSD is often found participating in includes: 99 Herding 99 Guard dog duties 99 Assistance Dogs 99 Police Dogs 99 Tracking and Search and Rescue The types of performance activities and events the BSD can be found enjoying includes: 99 Herding 99 Tracking 99 Agility 99 Obedience 99 Lure Coursing 99 Dock Diving 99 Dances with Dogs 99 Endurance Many Belgian Shepherds also excel at just being family companions, and this they do particularly well!

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE VARIETIES? According to the Breed Standard, there is no difference between the varieties of BSD besides coat length, texture and colour. Shave them off and they should all be the

8

same. The BSD is an elegant, wellproportioned, natural, mediumsized, square dog. They are enthusiastic and quick with a natural tendency to be in motion; elegant and robust, they have very few known health issues. The Groenendael and Tervueren have become the most popular as family companions due to their beautiful appearance and glamourous coats. It has also made them popular as show dogs. The Malinois has been consistently chosen as a Police dog due to the easy-care coat, so has developed a personality second to none when it comes to ‘getting their man’! The Laekenois is also popular as a working guarding dog, historically used to guard the flaxen fields in Brussels. The Laekenois also has the most developed sense of humour, but don’t let this goofy attitude trick you! They are as clever as their other three cousins and need a family who are committed to

training and boundaries.

PERSONALITY The BSD excels not only in herding, obedience, and tracking, but also in protection and law enforcement; drug, bomb and gas detection; search and rescue; sledding; agility; and therapy assistance to the disabled, ill or elderly. This dog is demanding and needs a dedicated owner. They are peopleoriented and want to be with their family; this preference makes the BSD unsuitable as kennel dogs. Belgians are also usually excellent watch dogs and will tell you when visitors are arriving.

LIVING WITH The Belgian Shepherd needs extensive socialisation from an early age and consistent boundary setting (but definitely not harsh training). They make excellent companions … IN THE RIGHT HOMES. They thrive on loving companionship.

The BSD can live in an apartment if sufficiently exercised; they are moderately active indoors, and will do best with at least an averagesized yard to play in. They adapt well to most climates, and the Malinois has proven their ability to adapt to harsher climates, for example, when working as army dogs in Afghanistan. The BSD lives happily in areas such as Far North Queensland and Darwin, as their double coats helps to insulate against the hot weather.

IN A NUTSHELL… Size: Medium Energy Level: Very energetic Exercise Requirements: Like us, BSD’s need to exercise regularly. This can be a long walk or run (after your pup reaches 12 months of age), ball or frisbee chasing or swimming. Environmental enrichment: BSD’s are a very intelligent breed that benefit from different types of enrichment along with exercise; this could include social, occupational,

sensory and nutritional. This will go a long way towards preventing any potential behavioural problems. Age Range: 12 – 16 years Grooming Needs: Moderate. The Belgian is a double-coated breed and will generally shed once or twice a year. Bathe only when dirty and clip nails regularly to keep your Belgian in great condition. All in all, this breed is very much a wash and wear breed, with a desirable ‘no smell’ coat. A quick brush through a couple of times a week, with a grooming session brushing right down to the skin once a week, is generally sufficient grooming, with extra attention at moulting time. Shaving or clipping is not recommended as the dog needs its natural insulation against all of the elements. Possible Health Issues: The Belgian is a relatively healthy breed, although as with any breed of dog occasionally some health problems may occur. It is important

that potential puppy buyers fully educate themselves and talk to many breeders about the health of their pedigree lines (the family tree!). Parent dogs as a minimum should be hip, elbow and eye scored and free of disorders. The puppy buyer should always ask for the parent dog’s health results, and also if there are any known health issues in the pedigree lines. A good breeder will be familiar with any problems and be breeding away from them. DNA testing is now offering full breed profiles and many breeders are utilising this new science to further improve their lines. The BSDCQ supports the Dogs Queensland requirement of DNA testing for parentage as a minimum. Epilepsy is known to occur in some pedigree lines and unfortunately at this stage there is no test available that can assist breeders to eradicate it where transmitted genetically.

9

Make sure there are no known epileptic dogs in your puppy’s immediate family (siblings, parents etc). REMEMBER: You will hopefully have this family member for at least 12 years. DO YOUR RESEARCH. Don’t buy the first cute puppy you see. (and they are ALL cute).

ONGOING ASSISTANCE A good breeder will give you a lifetime of support and beyond for your BSD. Don’t wait until a problem becomes insurmountable before you reach out. Remember, breeders and experienced owners will have already experienced the same problem. There are also many Facebook pages that you can join where there are members with a wealth of knowledge and experience for you to tap into, such as: 99 Belgian Shepherds Australia 99 Belgian Shepherds Dog Club of Queensland

THE BELGIAN SHEPHERD DOG CLUB OF QUEENSLAND The Belgian Shepherd Dog Club of Queensland was formed in 1990. The club aims to promote responsible breeding from health tested dogs, uphold the breed standard, and maintain the working ability of this breed. Our member breeders are Australian National Kennel Club registered breeders of pedigree dogs. The club welcomes members from across Australia, and invite those who share a passion in this breed to join to work together to achieve these goals. The club has members who are active in show, obedience, agility, herding, lure coursing, tracking and other disciplines, but many members are families with a companion BSD. The club offers discounted membership to breeders who sign up their puppy buyers, so ask your

breeder if they are a member of the BSDCQ. Activities offered by the club are as follows: 99 Regular Fun Days at various locations 99 Lure Coursing 99 Conformation Shows 99 Herding 99 Workshops and Seminars 99 Rescue Services Becoming a member of the BSDCQ entitles you to member privileges although many of our activities invite participation from nonmembers too. Trans-Cervical Insemination Dr Jennifer Larsen BAppSc(Hons), BVetBiol, BVSc

What is TCI? Trans-cervical insemination is a non-invasive method used by veterinarians to deposit semen, either fresh, chilled or frozen, directly into the uterus of the bitch. The semen gets to where it needs to be via a rigid video endoscope. Vaginal artificial insemination places the semen into the vagina and they may not penetrate the cervix, this is especially true for frozen semen. TCI means that your bitch doesn’t need to undergo a general anaesthetic or surgery to get semen into the uterus. TCI is the preferred method for improved fertility.

What actually happens when I book my bitch in for TCI? Bitches are inseminated standing and only very rarely require light sedation.

11

12

You are encouraged to help hold the bitch and observe the whole TCI procedure. You will be able to see on the TV screen everything your veterinarian sees. The video endoscope is passed into the vagina. The opening of the cervix is visualised on the screen and a sterile pipette is passed into the uterus. The semen is then deposited into the uterus. The whole process of insemination usually takes around 20 minutes. It will be slightly longer for frozen semen AI but still normally less than 30 minutes.

Planning a TCI For the best results from TCI we need to know when your bitch has ovulated. This involves usually 2 – 3 blood samples for progesterone testing. Knowing when your girl has ovulated allows us to time the TCI to achieve pregnancy and good litter size. It also gives you an accurate whelping date.

What about the dog’s contribution? The dog can be collected, and the semen processed immediately prior to the TCI or fresh-chilled shipped or frozen semen can be used.

Can all bitches be inseminated this way? All breeds from the largest to the tiniest toy breeds have been successfully bred using TCI.

How does TCI compare to surgical insemination? Both procedures place the semen directly in the uterus. The advantage of TCI is that no general anaesthesia or surgery are required to get the semen into the uterus. This means there are no risks associated with general anaesthesia or surgery. TCI is also typically much quicker than surgery and owners can often be on their way home in 45 minutes.

Another advantage is that the vagina, cervix and uterus can be seen on the TV monitor during TCI, allowing any problems with strictures, hyperplasia, fluid pooling or infection to be easily identified. TCI is a non-invasive painless procedure that the team here at Kallangur Vet Surgery have been performing successfully for almost ten years. Here at Kallangur Veterinary Surgery we are a new specialist reproduction clinic, having relocated our practice from NSW in 2017. We are more than happy to answer any questions you may have on TCI or any other matters related to breeding.

INTERESTING DOG FACTS Your dog’s sense of smell is 1,000 to 10 million times better than yours. Depending on the breed, your dog has between 125 million to 300 million scent glands — compared to only 5 million for humans. And the part of your dog’s brain that controls smell is 40 times larger than yours — that’s true, even though the canine brain is much smaller than the human, relative to size. A human’s brain is about 1/40th of their body weight while a dog’s brain is only 1/125th. Don’t feel too smug, though — an ant’s brain is 1/7th its body weight.

Having A Go at Rally ‘O’ Looking for something fun to do with your dog? Or are you already competing in dog sports and just thinking of trying something new? Caroline Strainig explains what Rally Obedience is all about. Years ago, a new instructor joined my local dog training club. Suddenly, clusters of bright orange witches hats with signs on them started popping up. “What the heck is going on?” I thought, and walked over to investigate. “It’s Rally Obedience, a new form of dog obedience developed in the USA,” the instructor told me. “Each sign tells you what exercise to do and you are marked on how well you do them. Unlike traditional obedience, you can praise your dog and offer them

encouragement, so it’s a little more relaxed.” That was in Port Macquarie, NSW in 2014. A year later I moved to Queensland, where the sport had already been warmly embraced by many clubs. Today, Rally O is still very popular in Queensland. In fact, the organisers of a recent Sunshine Coast trial had to appoint an extra judge at the last minute to cater for the larger-than-expected entries, which included 20 competitors in novice alone.

Teamwork and happy smiles all round: Naomi Shaw from Rockhampton competing with her Collie Rough, Willow, at Durack.

Why I Love Rally-O Easy novice exercises The rules describe Rally O as “a fast-moving and motivational sport which demonstrates competency in basic obedience exercises without the precision of the formal obedience classes”.

SHERRI LILLEY

There are four levels: - novice, advanced, excellent and masters and once you have finished these you can go on to compete for a championship title.

SONIA AUSTIN Rally O is a great way of building confidence and fun into the ring and comes with its own set of challenges – and entertainment. These include keeping your dog with you and stopping them running off and learning to read those sneaky signs correctly. It sure keeps you on your toes!

Novice courses are designed to give you an easy introduction to the sport. They are short, on-lead and include many exercises you should already be able to do if your dog has had some basic obedience training, such as heeling on a loose lead and a sit, stand, drop and stay.

ANNETTE DOBSON My dogs enjoy learning new exercises. They like the interactions - chit-chat and praise – we have going through a course. For me as the handler, the possibility of repeating an exercise that has gone wrong is a great confidence booster. Together we have fun, and sometimes a bit of success.

“It’s the suspense of not knowing if you will nail it that keeps me hooked. One moment you can do a perfect run and then the next make a silly mistake.”

JULIA FENTON Rally O offers an opportunity for my dog and I to show off skills learnt in a more relaxed atmosphere than that of the traditional obedience ring, with the inclusion of being able to give vocal encouragement to my dog. These encouragers keep my dog switched on and keen to work.

The courses gradually become longer and more demanding as you progress through the levels, culminating at masters level with exercises such as change of position from a distance. Doing exactly what each sign specifies is challenging, and tests your training, your relationship with your dog, and your ability to put it all together with a judge watching. It’s the suspense of not knowing if you will nail it that keeps me hooked.

DONNA WILLIAMS I love Rally O because I can freely help my dog to focus by providing verbal encouragement and praise. I find this helpful with a young dog just beginning in competitive sports. I believe Rally O also helps the dog control his/her body movement and develop a sound understanding of heel position.

One moment you can do a perfect run and then the next make a silly mistake and do an exercise wrong which costs you 10 points. Thankfully, your dog does not hold a grudge when you do!

CAROLYN RYAN

Great introduction One of the sport’s biggest pluses is that it’s a fantastic way to get some experience before you start formal

I got into Rally O when I was looking for an activity to do with a dog who’d gained his Supreme Ch show title. He knew basic obedience commands but hadn’t been trained for the precision required for obedience trials. I loved that Rally O allows you to talk to your dog, offer praise and even give pats.

Photo: Patrick Berger

I love being able to talk to your dog throughout the course. Providing encouragement and praise makes it more interactive and enjoyable for both dog and handler. I also enjoy progressing through the levels as we gain more confidence and experience. It’s a real team effort.

15

obedience competition, where you cannot talk to the dog during exercises apart from giving commands. In Rally O praise is encouraged and you can also retry up to two stations, with only a small penalty, which makes it much easier to come out of the ring with a big smile on your face. Another advantage is that it is ideal for older dogs and handlers because there is minimal jumping involved, and no jumps at all at the highest level, so it is not physically taxing. My border collie Adam is one of many ex-agility dogs enjoying Rally O.

Sally Sandall competing in Rockhampton with her German Shepherd, Jiri

How to get started Getting started is easy – just contact a club which offers training. You will find a list under the clubs link on the Dogs Queensland website, www.dogsqueensland.org. au. Visit their individual websites to find out which offer Rally O. Many clubs will ask you to do some basic obedience classes with them first as a pre-requisite unless you already have some relevant training. Another avenue is to go along to a competition and

16

watch people in the ring. Everyone is always happy to share their knowledge. You can find trials listed on the Dogs Queensland website under the show/trials link.

Signs on-line You can also print out the signs so you can see what is required and train at home. Just Google “ANKC rules for the conduct of rally-o trials 2016” and look for the signs section. Make sure you get the Australian ANKC site and not the American AKC because the signs are different. Probably the best piece of advice that first instructor gave me was to “Learn the signs!” How right she was. So, take the time to print out those pesky signs and practise so they are second nature before you go into the ring. That way you can relax and concentrate on having fun working with your dog as a team – which is what Rally O is all about. Caroline Strainig is a semi-retired journalist who still writes for magazines and websites. Her dog Adam is the current national masters Rally O champion and the Queensland 2018 Rally O Dog of the Year. She also does puppy home visits for CLEAR Dog Training in Brisbane.

DOGS DANCE Border Collies in restaurant and night club scenes. A surfing Staffie; a skateboarding Silky Terrier; Kelpies and a Papillon bouncing to the classics. Golden Retrievers bopping along, and cross-breeds of various sizes up to all sorts of zany moves. These are just some of the entertaining activities that our dogs get up to in Dances with Dogs competitions, where dogs and handlers demonstrate a skilful, choreographed routine, performed to music. Audiences and competitors alike enjoy the varied routines, music and creativity displayed by handlers and their dogs – both of whom obviously really enjoy what they are doing, says DWD Queensland Club president, Gay Westmore. Gay has been involved in the sport since being introduced to it at a

18

ON THE FLOOR workshop by renowned international presenter, Mary Ray, in 2006. 2019 is the 10th anniversary since the formation of the Dances with Dogs Club and the formal introduction of DWD competitions in Australia. The sport opens dogs’ minds to learning and the results are spectacular. Dogs back up, weave, spin, circle the perimeter of the ring, jump, even ‘say their prayers’ – all in time to the beat! Handlers choose moves according to what works for their particular dog, with the safety of the dog being

19

paramount at all times. It is always amazing to hear the huge variety of foot-tapping, tail-wagging music that handlers come up with. Some of the selections we’ve heard in the past have included music as varied as “Agadoo” (what an ear worm that creates!), “Consider Yourself” (from the musical “Oliver”), “I’m Fair Dinkum”, “Espana Cani”, “Eye of the Tiger”, “Steppin out with my Baby”, “Cowgirl” through to “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” and Brahms’ “Hungarian Dance”. Handlers dress in costumes which reflect the theme of their music. Dogs may wear a fancy collar, but we prefer not to demean them by dressing them in silly costumes.

DWD competitions are held at a variety of venues throughout south-east Queensland. They include Freestyle and Heelwork to Music classes, as well as a rookies class for beginner dogs who aren’t quite ready to compete yet.

How can we change pet breeding and buying for the better? An enterprising cat breeder from New Zealand, Joni Walker, has come up with a plan to make puppy and kitten mills a thing of the past, and hopes to promote world-wide involvement to achieve this. She’s created a website that makes it easy for breeders to find loving homes for their animals and for pet lovers to find responsible breeders. Joni hopes the website will bring greater transparency to the breeding world. The digital world has made it easier for the unscrupulous breeder to prosper, but www.pedigree-pets.com will allow reputable breeders’ reputations to shine.

trust and confidence throughout communities. The website has only just been launched so is in its infancy. At the moment its completely free for breeders to join. Dogs Queensland and other State registrars will confirm memberships of breeders who wish to list on the website. Pedigree Pets goal is for happy, healthy, well socialised pets bred by reputable breeders to be placed into quality forever homes. Homes that understand what is involved with raising a pet, the training, the cost of food
