Breeder Alert –Puppy Scam Websites

Dogs Queensland has become increasingly aware of Puppy Scam Websites using legitimate Dogs Queensland Registration and Queensland Breeder Identification (BIN) Numbers to sell puppies. Dogs Queensland Registration Numbers are obtained from legitimate websites such as Dogs Queensland or DogzOnline, where they are displayed as required by the Queensland Government.

Please see the Queensland Dog Breeder Fact Sheets for regulations and guidelines for Queensland Dog Breeders.

An example of a typical scam is:

• A Dogs Queensland Membership number is lifted from current advertising on the internet.

• The scammer researches and obtains personal details of the breeder including name, suburb, prefix.

• A domain name similar to the Kennel prefix is registered on an offshore registry.

• Once the breeder has ceased advertising the litter of puppies a new website is published.

• No physical address or phone numbers are advertised on the website.

• The seller avoids permitting you to physically see the cyber puppy and only sends non genuine pictures.

• The seller insists on only accepting payment by a crypto currency or a funds transfer.

As a breeder what can you do to avoid being an unknowing victim of a Puppy Scam:

• Regularly Google search the internet for websites using a similar Domain Name as your Prefix.

• Put a warning notification in your online advertising to alert buyers to check any website they are looking at is legitimate.

• Encourage puppy buyers to verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland and make direct in-person contact with you.

• Ensure puppy buyers check communications are made with verified contact details.

• Encourage puppy buyers to meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.

With its flowing coat, bright eyes, and exuberant personality, the Bearded Collie is not just a pretty face. It’s a devoted working dog with centuries of history behind it. Whether bounding through an agility course, herding sheep on a farm, or warming a family’s heart and hearth, the Bearded Collie is a breed that offers both function and friendship.

The Bearded Collie is known for a combination of charm, intelligence, and exuberance that sets it apart from other breeds. Full of playful energy, Beardies are often described as clowns. Their light-hearted, happy-go-lucky attitude makes them entertaining companions. They have a natural sense of fun and often find creative ways to engage their families. Perhaps the most iconic trait, the “Beardie bounce” is an enthusiastic, joyful leap often seen when the dog is excited or greeting people. It perfectly captures the breed’s zest for life and enduring optimism. The breed’s expressive eyebrows and flowing fringe often give it a comical, human-like facial expression – part of the reason many people find them so endearing.

A GLIMPSE INTO HISTORY

The Bearded Collie’s origins can be traced back to Scotland, where it was developed as a hardy and intelligent herding dog. While the exact details are difficult to verify, it is believed that Polish Lowland Sheepdogs were brought to Scotland in the 1500s and bred with local herding breeds. This cross resulted in a shaggy, agile, and alert dog suited to the rugged Scottish Highlands and the demanding work of managing sheep and cattle.

The breed became a staple of Scottish farms, prized for its stamina, independence, and ability to work in tough terrain and weather. Known historically as the “Highland Collie” or “Mountain Collie,” it was renamed the “Bearded Collie” due to the distinctive long hair under its chin that resembles a beard.

Though the breed nearly faded from existence

in the early 20th century, a revival began in the 1940s thanks to British breeder Mrs. G.O. Willison, whose dedication re-established the modern Bearded Collie.

Mrs. Willison’s journey began in 1944 when she acquired a brown puppy named Jeannie of Bothkennar. She soon discovered that Jeannie was in fact a Bearded Collie, and this unexpected encounter marked the start of a lifelong passion. She later acquired a blue puppy named Bailey of Bothkennar, and together, these two dogs became the foundation of the modern Bearded Collie breed. Mrs. Willison’s breeding efforts under the “Bothkennar” kennel name revived and formalised the breed standard, paving the way for its eventual recognition by major kennel clubs.

BEARDED COLLIES IN AUSTRALIA

The Bearded Collie was introduced into Australia in the 1960s, following the breed’s formal recognition by The Kennel Club in the UK in 1959. The first recorded Bearded Collies in Australia were imported from the United Kingdom by early enthusiasts who were captivated by the

breed’s appearance and working ability. These early imports laid the foundation for the breed’s development and popularity in the country.

Over the years, dedicated Australian breeders played a key role in strengthening the local gene pool, importing dogs from top kennels in the UK, New Zealand, Sweeden, Italy and the United States. The Bearded Collie quickly found favour not only in Conformation Showing but also in Herding, Obedience, and Agility circles.

Today, Beardies are a beloved breed in Australia, recognised by Dogs Australia and regularly seen in dog sports and on family farms. While still a relatively uncommon breed, the Beardie community in Australia remains passionate, closeknit, and committed to preserving the breed’s unique character.

TEMPERAMENT AND PERSONALITY

The Bearded Collie is often described as a joyful, affectionate, and intelligent dog. Its bouncy, exuberant nature makes it a natural clown, delighting its family with silly antics and endless enthusiasm. Beardies are known for their optimistic attitude—a trait affectionately referred to by fanciers as the “Beardie bounce.”

Despite their playful nature, Bearded Collies are also sensitive and people-oriented. They form strong bonds with their families and typically do not do well if left alone for long periods. Beardies are social animals who crave interaction, whether it’s with humans, other dogs, or even livestock.

Their herding instincts are still strong, so you may find a Bearded Collie trying to herd children, other pets, or anything that moves. They are also highly trainable and quick learners, although their independence can mean they sometimes prefer to do things their own way. Positive reinforcement, consistency, and patience are essential when training a Beardie.

Key Temperament Traits:

• Intelligent and quick-witted

• Energetic and playful

• Loyal and affectionate

• Alert and responsive

• Sensitive and people-oriented

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS

The Bearded Collie is sometimes mistaken for the Old English Sheepdog due to its shaggy coat,

but the two breeds are distinct, with the Beardie being leaner and more agile.

Bearded Collies are medium-sized dogs with a sturdy, athletic build. Males typically stand between 53 and 56 cm (21–22 inches) at the shoulder, while females are slightly smaller at 51 to 53 cm (20–21 inches). Their weight usually ranges from 18 to 27 kg (40 to 60 pounds), depending on factors such as sex, diet, and activity level. Although they have long, flowing coats that give them a soft appearance, Bearded Collies are anything but delicate—they are strong, agile, and well-built for both herding work and active family life.

The most distinguishing feature of the Bearded Collie is its double coat, made up of a soft, dense undercoat and a long, flat, harsh outer coat. The naturally shaggy coat hangs straight and parts down the middle, often covering much of the face and giving the breed its signature “bearded” appearance. Bearded Collies are born dark, typically in shades of black, brown, blue, or fawn, but their coats often lighten significantly as they grow due to the presence of the fading gene. This

gene causes the coat colour to gradually pale during puppyhood and adolescence, with black puppies often fading to slate grey and brown puppies to a lighter beige or tan. Interestingly, as Bearded Collies continue to mature, their coat colour can darken again slightly, settling into a more stable adult shade by around three to four years of age. The degree of fading and darkening varies between individuals. Recognised coat colours include black, blue (a steel-grey tone), brown and fawn (a sandy, light beige). All colours may come with or without white markings, and some dogs may also display tan points, especially when young.

GROOMING AND MAINTENANCE

Bearded Collies require a significant grooming commitment. Their long, thick coats are prone to matting if not brushed thoroughly at least two to three times per week—daily grooming is ideal, especially during seasonal shedding.

Without regular brushing, mats can form close to the skin, causing discomfort and potential skin problems. Many owners choose to keep their Beardie’s coat trimmed for easier maintenance, especially if the dog is not being shown.

EXERCISE AND ACTIVITY LEVELS

The Bearded Collie is an energetic breed that thrives on activity and mental stimulation. Originally bred for herding, Beardies need daily exercise to stay happy and healthy. Beardies excel in dog sports such as:

• Agility

• Obedience

• Herding Trials

• Rally

• Dances With Dogs

• Tracking They also enjoy interactive games and puzzle toys that challenge their intelligence and channel their energy into constructive outlets.

IDEAL HOME AND OWNERS

The Bearded Collie is not a couch potato breed. While they are gentle and affectionate companions indoors, they thrive best in homes where they receive ample time, attention, and physical activity. Ideal owners include active families with children who want a playful and engaging dog, experienced dog owners familiar with the needs of high-energy breeds, and individuals interested in dog sports or outdoor pursuits. Beardies are particularly well-suited to rural or suburban homes where they have room to run and explore. They typically get along well with other dogs and household pets, especially when socialised from a young age, making them a

harmonious addition to many multi-pet families.

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

Bearded Collies are generally a healthy and resilient breed, though like all purebred dogs, they can be prone to certain hereditary conditions. Common health concerns include hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism, autoimmune diseases such as Addison’s disease and AIHA, allergies or skin issues, and progressive retinal atrophy (PRA). Regular veterinary care, a balanced diet, and appropriate exercise help maintain their health. With proper care, most Bearded Collies live between 12 to 14 years, and many remain active well beyond that.

DID YOU KNOW?

The Bearded Collie gained widespread recognition when it starred in Disney’s 1959 film The Shaggy Dog. The film’s popularity helped spark renewed interest in the breed, particularly in the United States and later in Australia.

In a 2022 Pepsi commercial, a Bearded Collie named Rugby captured attention with his charm and lively energy, highlighting the breed’s playful personality. Decades earlier, in 1964, a vintage magazine advertisement for Gaines Burgers Dog Food featured a Bearded Collie, showcasing the breed’s appeal and helping to cement its place in popular culture.

WHEN DO YOU KNOW IT'S TIME TO SAY GOODBYE?

It's one of the hardest things any pet owner can go through. Knowing when it's time to euthanise your dog depends on their quality of life and their overall well-being. Here are some signs and considerations that can help guide you:

Quality of Life Indicators

Veterinarians often use a "Quality of Life Scale" to assess an animal's comfort. You might ask yourself:

1. Pain – Is your dog in chronic pain that can't be managed with medication?

2. Hunger – Are they still eating and drinking on their own?

3. Hydration – Can they stay hydrated, or are they frequently dehydrated despite help?

4. Hygiene – Can they control their bladder and bowels? Are they clean and free of pressure sores?

5. Happiness – Do they still show interest in their favourite people or activities?

6. Mobility – Can they get up and move around comfortably?

7. More Good Days Than Bad – Are their good days still outnumbering the bad ones?

If you're seeing a decline in most or all of these areas, it might be time to consider euthanasia.

What Your Vet Can Help With Your vet can assess:

• Pain levels

• Disease progression

• Whether treatment is still helping

• How comfortable your dog truly is

A compassionate vet will never rush you, but they can help clarify when letting go might be the kindest thing.

What Some People Say Helps

• "Would I want to live like this?" as a way to empathise.

• "Am I keeping them alive for them or for me?"

• "Do they still have joy?" — A tail wag, a response to affection, etc.

In the End

If your dog is suffering more than they're living — if they’re no longer themselves — it may be time. Euthanasia is an act of love when there's no more healing left to offer.

Meaningful ways to remember your dog

When a beloved dog passes, remembering them can be a deep source of comfort. Here are some meaningful and personal ways to remember your dog:

Personal Memorial Ideas

• Create a Memory Box: Fill it with their collar, tags, favourite toy, photos, a lock of fur or a paw print mold.

• Paw Print Keepsake: Many vets offer a clay or ink paw print after euthanasia. It’s a beautiful, tangible way to remember them.

• Custom Portrait: Commission or print a painting or illustration of your dog to hang in your home.

• Ashes Jewellery or Urn: If you cremated them, you can keep a small amount of ashes in a pendant or custom urn.

Emotional Remembrance

• Write a Letter to Them: Say everything you didn’t get to say. Tell them what they meant to

you, and how they changed your life.

• Create a Photo Album or Scrapbook: Capture the silly, sweet, everyday moments in one place.

• Plant a Tree or Garden: A living tribute that grows over time and honours the life they lived.

• Anniversary Ritual: Light a candle, take a walk in their favourite place, or share stories on the anniversary of their passing.

Spiritual or Reflective Ideas

• Make a Playlist: Songs that remind you of them or bring comfort.

• Memory Journal: Write down stories or habits you loved — the way they tilted their head, their bark, how they slept.

• Donate in Their Name: To a local shelter or rescue group, so their life continues to bring goodness into the world.

Saying goodbye to your dog is one of the most heartbreaking acts of love but remembering them can be a beautiful way to honour the life you shared. Whether it’s through keepsakes, personal rituals, heartfelt letters, or simple moments of quiet reflection, these memories can help carry you through the grief. Your dog may no longer be by your side, but their spirit, joy, and unconditional love will always live on in your heart – a bond that time or distance can never break.

Keeping In Contact

A long time ago, I bred a Cavalier litter. It was memorable for a number of reasons. It was my first litter and the puppies were born while I was in the midst of dealing with a court case by a vexatious litigant, the insanity of which I had never previously encountered.

I was stuck in the Supreme Court all day Friday, sick all weekend with the flu, and the litter was born in the early hours of the morning of Monday, 4 August 2014 – just before I had to appear in court yet again (same case), this time in the Court of Appeal. I was tired and exhausted. I had organised for someone to sit with my newborn litter while I attended court and my best laid plans failed. So, I was grovelling with

the Registrar early on Monday morning for a one day extension in order to find someone reliable to assist in looking after mother and babies. The catch – due to safety concerns, I somehow had to persuade the Registrar not to tell the other party why the extension was required. Fortunately, my unusual request was granted and I was given a day's grace so that I could ensure that my newborn puppies were supervised.

After all the trouble I had been through in planning and producing this litter, I wanted to keep the entire litter for myself. Not at all practical but perhaps understandable in the circumstances. Friends who lived nearby had watched the puppies playing in my garden while walking past every day and asked whether

perhaps they could have one. One of those puppies I named Jewel. She was trouble from the get go, being the one who had held up traffic during whelping. She also turned out to be the wild child of the litter and enjoyed causing havoc wherever she went. Eventually, I relented and allowed Jewel to go live with my friends. My friends had a great sense of humour and this was definitely the right home for her very endearing but strong personality and wild antics. Unfortunately, my friend moved across the ditch to New Zealand taking little Jewel with her. Apart from worrying about her having to undertake such a long trip, I was devastated as it seemed so far away.

Jewel had the life I always would have wanted for any puppy I bred. She was a force of nature –chasing quail and rabbits and pretending to be a Gundog with her buddy and partner in crime, a Springer Spaniel. Time passed. However, we always made an effort to keep in contact through emails and photos. I received regular updates regarding her progress and adventures in life. I also received reports of her naughtiness and “poor life choices” from time to time. I am sure that she received counselling whenever this occurred. So, even though the dog I bred was so far away in distance, she seemed closer.

I did manage to visit Jewel in the early years. It was wonderful to see how happy she was and how loved by her family. The same court case dragged on and on. The years passed, work, life and the pandemic intervened to prevent us from travelling and it just became too complicated to make the trip across the ditch. However, we always made the effort to keep in contact.

So, it was a long time before I saw her again. Finally, I managed to make a trip over to New Zealand last year. The court case which had dragged on for so many years had finally ended. Why not catch up with my friend and the dog

I had not seen for so long. Our reunion was a moment I will never forget. At first, she did not recognise me – not by sight. However, when she sniffed my scent, it was beautiful to see the recognition dawning on her face. They say a dog always remembers their breeder. In this case, it was definitely true.

Unfortunately, that was the last time I ever saw Jewel. I was upset when I received the email notifying me of her passing. However, I called her family and we laughed about how funny and adventurous she was and cried together about how much she would be missed. At least I know that she had a lovely life with long walks every day and running free. The closest you can get to heaven on earth for a dog.

One of the important and sometime challenging things is keeping in contact with puppy buyers. After all you have invested of yourself (time, money and resources) into bringing puppies into the world and raising the litter, it is then so difficult to let puppies go to their new homes. You worry about what life they will have. As responsible breeders we do everything possible to give them the best start in life. However, it is also a life-long commitment.

It is important to keep in contact with the owners of the dogs you have bred – whether it's just by way of email or catching up at breed club picnics and other events. That way, you at least know about the life of the dog and, if possible, how long they lived.

It is also useful in tracking the health and longevity of the lines – important information for a breeder to know. This is also important to maintain and improve the health of the breed. If you stay in contact, these people are also more likely to come back to you for their next puppy.

Further, if circumstances change and things don’t turn out, it is then possible to offer to assist. Based on my experience as a Club Secretary it is surprising how many people forget who the breeder was and where they came from. If you don’t maintain contact, the owners are less likely to attempt to find you and you don’t know where the dog may end up. It is also another reason to ensure that those with ownership and/ or custody of the dog are provided with all the requisite documentation. If the dog ends up with a breed rescue, they will hopefully get in touch with the breeder to let them know in case you wish to take the dog back or assist in rehoming.

Dogs Queensland Furthest Active Members

We are a small dedicated Labrador Retriever kennel located in Weipa, Far North Queensland, Australia. We began our Labrador journey in 1994 in Rockhampton, Central Queensland where we travelled to North Queensland and Far North Queensland for shows until we moved to Townsville (NQ) and now Weipa (FNQ). Our kennel prefix is Mahelu, which is derived from the first two initials of our three sons. We have bred about eleven litters of Labrador Retrievers and 1 litter of Pugs since 1996.

I (Michelle) have been involved in the ‘dog world’ since 1965 – my father bred and showed Pembroke Wesh Corgis (1960’s to 1970’s) in Central Queensland.

This love of the dog world saw me showing again in 1994, but with our forever breed the Labrador Retriever. Although Brett and I have been absent from the show scene on occasions (due to our remote location) we have always followed the breed in Australia and across the world.

Our involvement over the past 30 years started with Obedience, Agility and Endurance Tests, but mainly Conformation Showing. It was due to family life that we couldn’t do it all so we continued with Conformation Showing only. Now that we are near retirement we are planning to

Our set up for travelling – 'Annie' our caravan and 'Ruby' our car.

campaign our dogs in Conformation, Obedience and Scent Work, once we have moved to the East Coast.

Weipa Far North Queensland…. where is this you may ask? We are 800km North of Cairns on the Western Coast of Cape York. When we travel to our ‘local’ show we have 250kms of dirt and some 550kms of bitumen. The road North from Laura is called the Peninsular Development Road or PDR. With our 4 dogs it can take us up to 12 hours to drive to Cairns, depending on how many ‘toilet’ stops we need.

There isn’t a ‘dog community’ in Weipa, well not a purebred community – we do have CAPS rescue for unwanted dogs and puppies.

In Weipa, we get to see beautiful sunsets over the ocean, camp in amazing locations in Cape York and spend time with our family and dogs. We were members of Dogs Queensland from 1994 to 2016/17 when we let our membership lapse due to our very remote location and the difficulties we found attending shows when we were both working fulltime. We have also been members of the Labrador Retriever Club of Queensland, Rockhampton Kennel Club, Townsville Kennel Club and Thuringowa Kennel Club but also let these lapse when we moved to Weipa. It will soon be time to move to the East Coast (once again), hence we re-joined Dogs Queensland in 2022 and started travelling for a few dog shows.

The sign to Weipa.

With our return to the Confirmation Ring, we re-joined the Labrador Retriever Club of Queensland and the Ingham Kennel and Obedience Club (this will be our local club).

Last year we packed up our little crew of two Labrador Retrievers and travelled to Brisbane for the Labrador Retriever Speciality Shows and GunDogs and Heavy Breeds shows before we hooked up our van Annie and trekked all the way down south for the 14th Labrador Retriever National in Adelaide.

On our way down and back we attended a few ‘local’ shows through NSW and Victoria, where we were welcomed by unknown exhibitors. Once in Adelaide, us ‘Northerners’, froze our backsides off! It was windy, raining and cold! But not as cold as the shows at Dubbo on our return where it got below minus 6 degrees! Brett said “We aren’t heading below the Tropic of Capricorn in winter time”. Now keep in mind our temperature is usually 35 degrees or more in Weipa and maybe 18 degrees just one night in winter! Yes, we were cold and so were the dogs as they were both ‘out of coat’! This trip was a 10,000 km round trip – we are dedicated to our breed and our hobby.

We are currently travelling around Queensland again, in our van Annie to attend a few North Queensland shows, before heading south! We'll only travel to Brisbane this time to attend the EKKA, then north again to attend a few shows and Scent Work trials. All up we will be ‘away’ from home for 4 months. We enjoy camping and catching up with so many friends we have made over our 30 years of showing and always bring the best dog home, regardless of their wins or lesser placings.

Our dogs tend to grow their coat during the summer! Yep, to insulate them against our heat, then ‘blow their coats’ once a year around May/ June just before winter! Go Figure! We hope this changes when we move!

Dogs are our retirement plan, otherwise we would be stuck at home looking at each other wondering what to do! We hope we can continue in our hobby while we are able to and enjoy the company of other Labrador breeders and show friends.

Vale Margaret Alderton

It is always interesting to find out how people came to get involved with their chosen breed. In Margaret Alderton’s case it all started when her young son Ray told his parents he wanted a dog, and not just any dog. He wanted one like his television idol Lassie. Well Margaret and husband Ted decided that a Collie was too big for their household and after some research discovered the Shetland Sheepdog which was smaller should still satisfy young Ray’s requirements of having a pet that resembled Lassie

Ted had the last say on the matter though and insisted that if they were buying a pedigree dog

then they should go all the way and get involved in showing.

And so it all began in 1971 when Margaret and Ted purchased their first Sheltie from Pat Atkins of Kismet Kennels followed up in 1972 with a bitch Abovin Allegretta out of the first litter bred by John and Val Wishart. Allegretta titled in 1973 and late that year whelped Margaret’s first Champion Hjalti Caesar Gallant under her newly registered kennel prefix and went on to produce 8 Australian champions under her Hjalti prefix. Margaret then purchased Kismet Tartan in 1997 and later titled him.

In 1995 Anne Davies purchased Shelsian Simply Flash and asked Margaret if she would like to be Marika’s handler. Margaret successfully showed

Marika through to her Grand Champion Title with a Specialty Best in Show and numerous Best in Group wins along the way – Anne later signed ownership over to Margaret. The ensuing friendship that developed with Marika’s breeders, Ian and Cheryl Spangler, led to Margaret later owning and/or campaigning and titling Ch Shelsian Exquisite, Ch. Shelsian Sutherland, Ch. Shelsian The Traveller and Gr. Ch. Shelsian Believe Itr Not (her beloved “Ripley”) in Queensland. Margaret’s Shelties always lived in the house and were very spoilt members of her family.

Margaret maintained membership of the Shetland Sheepdog Club of Qld from its inception as a Social Club and then its full membership with C.C.C. in 1974, and served for many years as a committee member and office bearer. She also served as a tireless and dedicated worker for numerous All Breed Clubs. She was made a Life Member of the Shetland Sheepdog Club of Qld. She was also made Life Member of the Pine Rivers Kennel Club, Dayboro Show Society and the Working Dog Club of Queensland.

Around the 1980’s Margaret started showing a Briard of Cec and Hazel Oxford called Boris, Scodan Bon Ami, a dog she said was magnificent and won a lot of Groups and Best in Shows. Later she showed another of their dogs, called Andre, Nabrisse Andre Noir

She was a great handler and a wonderful groomer – her dogs always looked immaculate and trained to perfection.

After the passing of her husband Ted, Margaret continued showing her dogs, remaining very independent living on her own with her beloved Shelties and could always be relied upon to pitch in and lend a hand whenever she was needed to help out. In later years, with her ailing health, she maintained her involvement in the dog world by ticket writing for many shows, a job that she performed confidently and really enjoyed. She was always up for a chat with her many friends and acquaintances at the shows and will be sadly missed.

Margaret leaves behind a son, Ray.

RIP our lovely friend and dog lover.

Welcome To Zone 2 News!

Let’s Talk, we need to have a conversation

… the Conformation Dog Show Calendar

– Katrina Santas Director Zone 2 Representative

Well, we all love our dog shows, sports and activities with our vast array of dog breeds and the fun we have with our friends when we get together. From time to time and over time, all these great events start to clash, coincide and just don’t allow each others' activities to work in a practical manner in the calendar of events, let alone our day to day lives.

Dogs Queensland’s Show Dates Working Party (of which I am a member, together with fellow board members: Gordon Mayne (Z3), Duncan McAllister, Barbara Murfet, Bill Smith and Convenor, Tim Thomas) are working through a process to review the conformation show calendar.

As you could expect, this is a lengthy process to look at the shows across the state (of which we are all aware is a huge landscape), to see if we can better manage our dates, clashing shows, distance between shows and the opportunity to help clubs thrive and build exhibitor participation. I know, I know, we’ve heard it all before … but we have to try to get it together.

We expect these changes will not take effect until 2027 as they will take time and there could be

judges already contracted, venues that cannot change dates and negations to be discussed.

So what does this mean for Zone 2 clubs?

Well, we know that upper Zone 2 works pretty well in coordinating their shows with Zone 3 in an attempt to maximise show entries and keep the income flowing for the clubs to survive. We also know that these shows have little effect on Zone 1 shows or Zone 1 shows affecting them. It is likely that there may be little change to be had here.

What we do know, is that the middle and lower area of Zone 2 are dramatically affected by shows held at the same time. We further know that shows conducted in Zone 1 severely effect entries and club survival in the lower, and to some degree, the middle area of Zone 2.

Let’s just look at July 2025 just past … three All Breeds Shows were held at Bundaberg but Specialty Shows including group specialities were held at Durack. This equated to low entry numbers for the Bundy shows, even with three interstate judges presiding and the hiring of undercover rings in an attempt to entice and increase numbers. But alas, entries could not get near 200 per show and the club suffered a significant loss.

Shows in Gladstone two weeks later tried the same – three interstate judges to entice our Brisbanite friends to enjoy our great regional locations. All Breed Shows were also held at Durack at this time. Again, entries did not reach 200.

Our Zone 2 clubs rely on the support of exhibitors and members from the Zone 1 area to actively participate in and enter our shows to keep our shows alive – Sweepstakes are conducted, Junior Handlers are always held, onsite camping facilities are available and entry fees kept low. Yes, we conduct shows in Zone 2 to support our Zone 2 members, but we need the support of Zone 1 members to help these clubs stay alive into the future and not be forced to fold.

Yes, there are other contributing factors, such as the rising cost of living, work commitments, travel time – clubs could also do more fundraising to support their shows but at the end of the day, entries are still needed as without entries, there is not a show.

So, this is part of why the Working Party is looking at show dates across the state and may come up

with some varying ideas that will be shared, but we need to start somewhere and improve on our calendar to make shows and exhibiting viable in all parts of the state.

• If you have any questions, please ask.

• If your club has dates that cannot be changed (eg. only weekend provided by council due to other events held at a showground) then let us know.

• If you have judges already contracted for 2026 and 2027 that cannot be changed, then pop us a note.

• If you want to move your dates and try to separate away from other clubs shows, talk to us and let us help.

• If you want to combine two weekends back to back between two clubs to entice entries by producing a cluster or circuit, let us know some details.

We need to start working together. We need to start this process somewhere. We need to support each other. And we need to improve to keep our sport alive.

Let’s start this conversation and be a part of the decisions together. In the first instance, please email any questions, comments, feedback and / or information to the office, attention to Rob Harrison at rob@dogsqueensland.org.au with the heading of 2027 Show Calendar Review.

I’m ready to help, would like to hear from you and am happy to have conversations to take to the Working Party. Let’s get this happening … let’s work together on this and improve our calendar so we can all keep participating in the fun we enjoy with our dogs and our friends.

Thank You to our Sponsors

Dogs Queensland would like to both thank and acknowledge the following businesses who kindly donated to the Dogs Queensland Ekka Show Bags - your support is greatly appreciated!

SCENT WORK IS GOLDEN

Scent Work is an extremely popular sport in Queensland, with officially sanctioned events being held from 2021 onwards by sporting and breed clubs. The Golden Retriever Club of Queensland was one of the very first breed clubs to elect to host a Scent Work Trial, commencing with their Inaugural Novice Class Scent Work Trial in 2023. Held in conjunction with their Specialty Show event in July each year, this has proven to be an extremely popular event in the Queensland Scent Work calendar.

2025 has proven to be no exception, with 63 dogs competing in over 150 searches under Judges Kim Dawson (QLD) and Jeanette Durante (QLD) on Saturday 5 July 2025. The atmosphere was fun and enthusiastic, with a number of firsttime competitors achieving success at the trial. Congratulations to everyone who participated, and to the element and overall winners.

All images showcased on pages 47 and 48 are courtesy of Ash Harriman.

THE ULTIMATE DOG GROOMING BRUSHES IN THE WORLD.

REGULAR PIN BRUSH

WOODEN PIN BRUSH

A brilliant grooming brush for all coat types & a favourite for puppies. 100% anti-static natural wooden pins smooth the coat and prevent flyaways. They delicately loosen knots and reduce pulling on the coat to prevent breakage while massaging the skin to revitalise natural lustre.

Ideal for grooming all coat types. Perfect for most coats that require a pin brush for drying, refreshing a coat or maintenance brushing. Ideal for blow-drying and particularly necessary on coated breeds.

EXTRA LONG PIN BRUSH

LONG PIN BRUSH

Popular grooming brush for many full coated or longer coated breeds that require a slightly longer pin length to enable efficiency and ease of brushing and drying. An ideal brush for blow-drying many breeds.

A brush specifically designed for dogs with that extra-long coat length and ideal for very long flowing coated breeds. The 35mm rounded polished pins enable ease of brushing and drying of extra-long coat types.

THICK PIN BRUSH

A pin brush with thicker pins for those thick, dense, and hard to get through coats. Many breeds have coats that don’t allow a “normal” pin brush to efficiently brush and dry. This thick pin allows the pins to penetrate these coats to ensure the coat roots to coat tips are correctly and thoroughly brushed.

ANTI-STATIC PORCUPINE BRUSH

A finishing/styling brush for softer to a lighter density double coats Porcupine pins will remove tangles and loose coat. Dialon pins easily get through the coat while the 100% black boar bristles have a gentle yet smoothing effect of the coat. The perfect finishing brush to use on ¾ dry coats, maximising contact with the coat to finish to the dry style and result you require. This brush has the ability to flatten, straighten and reduce wave to coats when drying.

SOFT SLICKER BRUSH

100% PURE BRISTLE BRUSH

This is your soft, delicate and silky coat type brush, yet also perfect using on shorter coated breeds for a smoothing and polishing Suitable for all breeds and essential for smooth or short coated breeds. The best brush for gentle finishing.

Our Ultimate Soft Slicker is brilliant in abolishing loose hair, de-matting and individualising all coats of various types and lengths It can easily get through the densest of coats with a resulting finish and hair separation to the coat is like no other slicker. The softness of this slicker allows the perfect finish when drying or brushing on multiple coat types. The very best slicker on the market. Used & trusted by top winning show dog’s owners and handlers worldwide.

POWDER APPLICATION BRUSH

Designed for applying powders to Show Dogs and shaped to enable groomers to place powder in hard to reach areas. Features horse-hair bristles.
