President’s Message
W“e all attend shows and events in the hope that we will have an enjoyable and successful day.
One situation that seems to be occurring more and more frequently, is aggressive dog incidents. Many of these situations may be averted if the handlers monitor and respond to the signals our dogs give us.
Even the best tempered and well trained dogs can react in certain circumstances. It is the responsibility of the handler to control their dog and ensure they are managed effectively in every situation. Whether in the competition ring, or relaxing back at their campsite, dogs must always be under effective control.
One area that is of particular concern is the assembly area at conformation shows. It is imperative that these areas be kept free for dog breeds which are currently being judged, and not used as a place to sit for the day. Show managers and stewards are asked to ensure these areas are kept free from excess dogs to ensure there is ample space for dogs to assemble.
Members reactions in circumstances when an incident occurs can also cause an escalation of the situations. Remaining calm and respectful is essential. We are always under the rules of Dogs
Queensland and behaviour of our members is expected to be polite and respectful. The manner in which an individual behaves in these difficult situations can greatly effect those involved.
Rule 71 Incidents at Sanctioned Events provides full details of the procedure should an incident occur. Incidents at Sanctioned Events – Page 62
Should you be a witness to an incident, please do step up and provide the Event Manager with a statement. Your statement may be critical evidence in ensuring the outcome is fair and just for those involved.

JAPANESE CHIN
The Japanese Chin ... are extremely playful, mischievous and good-natured. They are perfect companions for anyone, from the well-behaved young child to the infirmed elderly.
Josie Haseldine
– Lyn McArthur
Like gaily-wrapped presents beneath a Christmas tree, the Japanese Chin is a bundle of joy, surprise and mischief cloaked in an air of serenity and superiority.
HISTORY
The origin of the Japanese Chin is clouded in the mysticism of Far Eastern ancient rites. Small dogs were known to have crisscrossed the Silk Road accompanying travellers as both presentations of trade and companions on the long journeys. Some of these dogs became the pets of Buddhist Monks, who nurtured and mated various types in their sheltered monasteries: eventually, as gifts to travelling dignitaries. They quickly assumed their rightful position in the Imperial palaces, where they were closely kept and guarded for the Imperial family by private eunuchs who were charged with looking after the little dogs’ every need, every desire. Mere peasants were not allowed to own them as the small dogs became treasures more valuable than gold.
Navigating the globe by ship soon changed the way merchants traded their goods. During the fifteenth century, traders from the west arrived by sea using merchant ships. Looking for good will and favourable deals, they always brought gifts for members of the local nobility and government. Included as items of good will were usually a couple of dogs from the native lands – some dogs were large hunters, while others were of the small lap type. Eventually, these little dogs were crossed with the existing ‘pai’ dogs, whose roots rested with the caravans of the Silk Road, and other varieties emerged. Countries such as Portugal, Italy, Spain, Holland, England, and later the United States, covered the seas in search of trade and wealth – changing the lives of all involved, including the little dogs.
The name Japanese Chin is actually a misnomer for the breed owes its basic origins not to Japan, but to China. It has long been surmised that the Japanese Chin and Pekingese were once the same breed with the Pekingese having been bred out to create the short, bowed-legged, long-back, pearshape bodied breed of dog known today. The Chin is believed to have been kept basically pure, but in searching through Far Eastern works of art dating from the 17th to 20th Century, several patterns
clearly emerge:
1. An early small Japanese dog resembled the old Continental Toy Spaniel of Europe – aristocratic in bearing, square-bodied, up-on-the leg, distinctive long muzzle and luxurious flowing silky coat.
2. The Chinese Chin was the flat-faced, straightlegged, a bit long-backed, parti-colour dog called the Imperial Chin.
3. These two types were blended together to bring about the Japanese Chin of today – dainty, square-bodied, flat-faced, and richly coated, elegant toy breed.
With the exception of a small Dutch trading post and limited contacts through China and Korea, Japan closed its doors in 1636 to the outside world in an effort to prevent foreigners from further influencing their people and culture. This self-imposed isolationist policy lasted for more than two centuries. It was not until Commodore Matthew C. Perry opened Japan in the mid-1850s that Westerners again stepped foot in the country
on a regular trading basis. Perry had been sent to Japan by United States President Franklin Pierce, with the good wishes of Great Britain’s Queen Victoria. Both countries wanted to establish trading posts in the closed Empire. When Perry finally accomplished the task, his ships returned home laden with many Imperial gifts for himself, President Pierce and Queen Victoria. Among the gifts presented were three pairs of small Imperial dogs – one pair for Perry, another for Pierce and a third for Victoria. Out of the six, the only ones known to have survived the voyage were those given to Perry. According to official ships’ logs, Presidential and Palace papers, the remaining dogs never reached their destinations.
Perry gave his two little canine presents to his daughter, Caroline Perry Belmont, who was married to August Belmont. Their son, August Belmont, Jr., served as President of the American Kennel Club from 1888-1915. According to the Belmont family, the two Chins from Japan – one a dog and the other a bitch – were never bred and died as beloved house pets without issue.
TEMPERAMENT AND PERSONALITY
A Japanese Chin is a good companion and
unique breed. They are loving, but independent; eager, but stubborn; snooty, but have a demure temperament. Gay, happy, gentle and good natured. A sensitive and intelligent dog, albeit somewhat independent, whose only purpose is to serve as a companion. Responsive and affectionate with those they know and loves, reserved with strangers or in new situations. Naturally clean, the feisty Chin makes an ideal pet that can thrive in any environment. They will wash each other’s faces and clean their feet at night. They do not like to live in dirty surroundings and are easy to housetrain.
They are amiable with other animals and although they make good watchdogs, they are not known to bark often. Japanese Chin are renowned for their impish antics and catlike nature as they prefer to be on top of things – much as a cat does.
APPEARANCE – SIZE, COAT AND COLOURS
The head is a major breed characteristic. Of the brachycephalic type, it is large for the size of the dog but not overdone and coarse. The skull is round in all directions, but not domed. The Japanese Chin has a round dark eye with a peculiar look of astonishment, a characteristic of the breed.

Jimmy Lundgren
The roundness of the skull between the ears is best seen when the dog is in repose. Because the ears are set wide apart and high, and carried slightly forward, the skull can appear flatter when the dog is alert. This is often seen in pups, before the ear feather has fully grown.
The Japanese Chin is a naturally clean dog. They are easy to bathe and are sometimes referred to as the “wash-and-wear” breed. Their coat seldom mats and they require no special grooming or scissoring. The profuse but silky coat of the Japanese Chin gives him the appearance of a high-maintenance breed, but surprisingly easy to maintain in top condition.
They require brushing a few times a week and a bath every couple of weeks or so, depending on their living conditions. The breed’s nails grow very fast and should be trimmed regularly to keep them short and neat. Their ears should be checked regularly to avoid a build-up of wax and debris that can cause ear infections and teeth should be brushed frequently to avoid dental problems.
Japanese Chins come in Black and White and Red and White.
Japanese Chins weigh 1.8 to 3.2kgs.
WHO ARE THEY BEST SUITED FOR
They like simple living – a plush pile of pillows on the bed is their idea of a perfect spot for sleeping. They are extremely playful, mischievous and goodnatured. They are perfect companions for anyone, from the well-behaved young child to the infirmed elderly. They are good travellers, whether by car boat, plane, or bike basket.
Families with children will find the Japanese Chin to be a wonderful addition to their household. Their gentle nature and patience make them a great playmate for kids, and their small size means they are less likely to accidentally knock over or overpower a child. Singles, couples, and seniors will also find the Japanese Chin to be an ideal companion. For retirees or those who work from home, the Japanese Chin can provide constant companionship without being overly demanding. Because of their small size and moderate exercise needs, they are well-suited to apartment living. They don’t require a large yard, but they do enjoy short walks and playtime.
ACTIVITIES AND SKILLS JAPANESE CHINS EXCEL AT
Japanese Chins are known as a companion toy dog and that is their main purpose in life, however they can compete in Agility and have done extremely well! Therapy Work is another skill due to their ability to remain calm and loving, especially in hospitals or nursing homes.
HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS
Like all breeds the Japanese Chin can be prone to some health conditions. Their average life span is between 10-14 years old.
Some of the more common health issues that an elderly Japanese Chin may suffer from are: Patellar Luxation, Eye Conditions, Heart Disease and Allergies and some skin issues.
If Japanese Chin have a drawback, it is that they are too smart – you cannot own a Japanese Chin, for the Japanese Chin owns you! You sometimes cannot train a Chin, for the Chin trains you! And, from the words of many old breeders – once you have lived with one you will never want to be without one. And, trust me, one is not enough!

Why Annual Health Checks Matter For Breeding Dogs
Annual health checks for breeding dogs are crucial for several reasons – both to protect the dogs themselves and to ensure the health of their offspring.
WHY ANNUAL HEALTH CHECKS MATTER FOR BREEDING DOGS
1. Ensure Reproductive Fitness
Regular exams confirm that both males and females are fit for breeding. Vets can detect:
• Reproductive infections.
• Hormonal imbalances.
• Semen quality or fertility issues.
Healthy dogs = successful matings and healthy litters.
2. Prevent Hereditary Diseases
• Genetic screening and health checks reduce the risk of passing on inherited conditions.
• Breeding only from dogs with clear health status supports long-term breed health.
3. Detect Problems Early
Dogs often hide signs of illness. Annual checks can catch:
• Dental disease.
• Joint problems.
• Heart murmurs.
• Thyroid or metabolic issues.
Early detection means better outcomes and longer breeding careers.
4. Keep Vaccines & Parasites Under Control
• Stay current on core and non-core vaccinations.
• Routine parasite screening and preventatives protect both the breeding dogs and their litters.
5. Improve Pregnancy & Whelping Outcomes
Healthy dams are more likely to:
• Conceive easily.
• Carr y full-term.
• Deliver strong, viable puppies.
Diet, weight, and hormone balance are all checked during annual exams.
6. Stop The Spread Of Contagious Diseases
Some illnesses are silent but highly contagious:
• Parvovirus.
• Intestinal parasites.
• Skin mites and mange.
Annual testing protects your breeding dogs, their mates, and future litters.
7. Maintain Accurate, Responsible Records
Veterinary input helps you:
• Track health and fertility.
• Monitor cycles and timing.
• Build trust with buyers.
Responsible breeders do their homework – and health checks are step one.
Partner with your vet to give your dogs the best care – and your puppies the best start.
A Healthy Breeder Is A Trusted Breeder
Annual veterinary checks are not optional—they are the backbone of ethical, effective breeding. They safeguard the health of your dogs, protect the breed’s future, and build trust with puppy buyers and fellow breeders.
ANNUAL HEALTH CHECK COMPONENTS FOR BREEDING DOGS
Here's a comprehensive guide to what should be included in a yearly health check for breeding dogs:
1. General Physical Examination
• Weight and body condition score.
• Temperature, pulse, and respiration.
• Teeth and gums (dental health).
• Eyes, ears, and skin check.
• Joint and muscle assessment.
• Heart and lung auscultation.
Unsplash
2. Reproductive Health Assessment For Females (Dams):
• Mammar y gland examination.
• Uterine and ovarian health (especially after whelping).
• Vaginal exam if indicated.
• Heat cycle tracking and management. For Males (Sires):
• Breed-specific genetic tests (e.g., hip dysplasia, PRA, EIC).
• Eye certification by a veterinary ophthalmologist.
• Cardiac exam (echocardiogram for breeds prone to heart disease).
7. Nutrition & Weight Management
• Review diet for appropriate life stage and breeding demands.
• Adjust feeding for pre-breeding, gestation, and lactation stages.
8. Behaviour & Temperament Evaluation
• Especially important if breeding for working dogs, ser vice animals, or family pets.
Additional Recommendations:
• Keep detailed health and breeding records.
• Discuss breeding plans and timing with your veterinarian.
• Schedule a pre-breeding health consultation a few weeks before planned mating.

CANINE PHOTOGRAPHY AT ITS BEST
The Dog World magazine has showcased a selection of canine photographers in previous issues – many of whom are contracted to larger Conformation Shows. Dogs Queensland also wish to acknowledge those talented people behind the camera at country shows.
In this edition we highlight Julie Legg from Hoofprintz Photography and her amazing images captured through the lens.
Transitioning from horse photography to the show dog world has been both challenging and enlightening.
I've been fortunate to meet many incredible dog owners who generously share their knowledge and provide unwavering support. Our weekends are now a perfect balance of horse shows and dog shows, keeping things interesting.
Having a couple of amazing girls working alongside me certainly helps cover the busy weekends full of bookings from one end of NSW to the other end of Queensland! However I do all the editing so its always a fun week when everyone hands in the SD cards after a huge event.
I've always loved photography. My parents gifted me my first decent camera for my 21st birthday, and everything took off from there. It was much more challenging 20 years ago when you had to wait for the film to be developed before seeing your photos. I'm continually impressed by the advancements in the digital world and what can be achieved with tools like Photoshop and even a simple phone.
Creating banners and artwork behind the scenes is one of my favourite jobs. We create many advertisements and basic artwork from shows, as well as Facebook pages and website design.
Whenever I have the time, I continue to teach and judge in the horse community, sharing my expertise and passion with others.
I have Jack Russell's at home, and they are my favourite breed. Their massive personalities and strong opinions keep life very interesting.
I'm always eager to capture that perfect photo or have a chat about your breed and their history, so please come and say hi when you see me out and about.

Brookfield Shows – 24 and 25 May 2025
Another Brookfield Show weekend with our two dog shows is done and dusted and what a success it was! A wonderful two days in sparkling sunshine!
For many years this Brookfield Agricultural Show –the biggest little show in Brisbane city – happened the second weekend in May. This year we moved to the third weekend and that was a happy outcome for a few reasons.
For the first time our shows were the same weekend as the Esk Agricultural Show. I had been contacted by Lynda Trotter a few months earlier who indicated that she and Samantha Beedham were looking to start up the dog show at Esk on the Friday before the Brookfield Shows on the Saturday and Sunday. We co-operated over the sub-contracting of our interstate judges, and we hosted the full interstate contingent.
Our shows were tinged with the sadness that Lynda died suddenly just a matter of weeks before the show weekend. Our thoughts have been with her husband, Richard, and her friends and family at this time. Lynda was hugely influential in the Belgian Shepherd breed both nationally and internationally and it is a very sad loss to our dog world. A special Belgian Shepherd parade was held at the Esk Show on Friday 23 May 2025 in her honour. Samantha and her team did a great job
with the successful running of the dog
Brookfield is known for its horse events held on the historic main arena. Due to the torrential rain the weekend before the horse events were cancelled, making the dog shows the main events on the main arena. This move from the school oval at the rear was handled so well by a great team at the Show Society and exhibitors cooperated wonderfully. This has happened a few times before but not since I have been running these shows over the last 13 years. As they say, there is a silver lining to every cloud
As members would know, Brookfield is a show where we encourage the public to engage with us as exhibitors and dog breeders. We are passionate about our breeds and the Agricultural Shows are the best forum to engage with people about our dogs. As part of this process, I like to explain what is going on in the rings as the judging progresses. It’s all about demystifying dog showing and stimulating interest in conformation showing and our other dog sports.
Having Advance as a major sponsor and on site with their Ambassadors to advise the public on nutrition and dog breeds is a real bonus too. Of course, the wonderful fruit and goodies baskets for each General Specials class both days has become quite a tradition. This is sponsored by

Kenmore Fresh and the Brookfield Show Society. I first saw such baskets at another Agricultural Dog Show in the Brisbane Valley and thought it was so appropriate. And this year we had Mrs Lyn Brand sponsor the shows with her super Delete product. It was great seeing the public flow down on to the main arena and engage with so many of the exhibitors and their dogs. I received great feedback from a number of exhibitor breeders who received numerous quality puppy enquiries and enjoyed the interaction in a lovely atmosphere. This has been happening on the school oval too, but this weekend was a great opportunity to raise the profile of our dog shows.
The team at the Brookfield Show Society is so supportive and very keen to continue to raise the profile of the dog shows. Perhaps we can
have Junior Handlers again and make a special attraction of this event in the Long Yard in front of the main arena. There may be ambit to have a stall with different breeds and puppies being showcased at set time slots, perhaps with Advance involvement. I would be interested in feedback on these and any other initiatives. Dog sport displays also come to mind.
There are advantages to being a committee of one with the Brookfield Show Society dog shows but I would welcome expressions of interest from those with an interest in getting involved with this wonderful event. It is a great show society to work with. I can be contacted on the following email: ulla@leatherwoodlodge.com.

The conformation ring setup was changed this year to one more like those in Germany, the homeland of the German Shepherd Dog, ensuring a more seamless experience for both exhibitors and spectators. A large ring was divided for individual assessments and smaller classes, then opened up for larger ones—providing great viewing for spectators.
CONFORMATION
German judges Christoph Ludwig (SV, Germany) and Harald Hohmann (SV, Germany) evaluated more than 250 entries in both Long Stock Coat (LSC) and Stock Coat (SC) conformation categories.
Herr Ludwig oversaw LSC Dogs and Bitches as well as SC Dogs, and Herr Hohmann judged SC Bitches.
Cinderhof Cerseii AZ took out the Gold Medal Stock Coat Bitch and Gabmalu Liberte AZ was awarded the Long Stock Coat Bitch Gold.

Adding to the festive atmosphere was Saturday night’s function, a chance to reconnect with friends from across the country and welcome international visitors. Exhibitors, judges, and spectators gathered to unwind after a day of competition and toast to the breed’s enduring legacy.
Sunday night’s trophy presentation drew an impressive attendance, with a rich trophy table supported by an array of generous sponsors from within, and outside, the German Shepherd Dog community.

Breeder Alert –Puppy Scam Websites
Dogs Queensland has become increasingly aware of Puppy Scam Websites using legitimate Dogs Queensland Registration and Queensland Breeder Identification (BIN) Numbers to sell puppies. Dogs Queensland Registration Numbers are obtained from legitimate websites such as Dogs Queensland or DogzOnline, where they are displayed as required by the Queensland Government.
Please see the Queensland Dog Breeder Fact Sheets for regulations and guidelines for Queensland Dog Breeders.
An example of a typical scam is:
• A Dogs Queensland Membership number is lifted from current advertising on the internet.
• The scammer researches and obtains personal details of the breeder including name, suburb, prefix.
• A domain name similar to the Kennel prefix is registered on an offshore registry.
• Once the breeder has ceased advertising the litter of puppies a new website is published.
• No physical address or phone numbers are advertised on the website.
• The seller avoids permitting you to physically see the cyber puppy and only sends non genuine pictures.
• The seller insists on only accepting payment by a crypto currency or a funds transfer.
As a breeder what can you do to avoid being an unknowing victim of a Puppy Scam:
• Regularly Google search the internet for websites using a similar Domain Name as your Prefix.
• Put a warning notification in your online advertising to alert buyers to check any website they are looking at is legitimate.
• Encourage puppy buyers to verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland and make direct in-person contact with you.
• Ensure puppy buyers check communications are made with verified contact details.
• Encourage puppy buyers to meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.
Teacup Puppies: Health risks & the truth behind the trend
"Puppy farmers are now advertising “teacup Griffons” for sale as 'rare' or 'unique'. The word “ teacup “ is an automatic red flag as no reputable breeder would use this word". Michelle Parker Brian – Ballilol Griffons and President the Country Griffon Bruxellois Club of NSW.
– Maria Arnold, Perfect Pets
Every few years there seems to be a puppy fad or trend gets hold, and the latest is the return of the 'teacup'. A growing number of ads for "Teacup Puppies" are being reported – maltipoos, poodles, and other variations – promising 'adorable, healthy, vaccinated puppies ready for their forever homes'. According to Michelle Parker Brien –President of the Country Griffon Bruxellois Club of NSW, there's also been a very real surge in ads for “teacup Griffons” which is raising alarm bells as the breed is becoming increasingly sought after and prone to exploitation by 'for profit' breeders. This spike in teacup puppy ads is deeply concerning and highlights the urgent need for clear, factual information for anyone considering one of these dogs.
WHAT IS A TEACUP PUPPY?
“Teacup” is a marketing term for dogs bred to be much smaller than a proper, healthy size – often under 2 kg (4.4 lbs) as adults. There is no official or scientific definition, and no responsible breeder
or association recognises “teacup” as a legitimate category. The term is often used by puppy farmers or 'for profit' breeders to create a sense of rarity and justify higher prices.
HOW ARE TEACUP DOGS BRED?
Teacup puppies are often bred from the smallest (runt) puppies in a litter. Because not every litter has a runt, some breeders resort to inbreeding or other risky practices to consistently produce tiny dogs. This focus on size over health increases the risk of inherited and developmental health issues.
• Extreme fragility (high risk of injury from minor accidents)
• Difficulty with medication and anaesthesia (higher risks due to small size)
• Greater vulnerability to injuries, temperature changes, and stress.
THE ETHICS OF TEACUP BREEDING
No responsible breeder uses the term “teacup” or deliberately breeds for extreme smallness. Michelle Parker Brien explains:
“When people deliberately breed for extremes in anything, it just opens it up to health problems... A reputable breeder will never use the word ‘teacup’ or sell at an increased price as ‘rare’. It isn’t rare. Don’t be fooled or played for a sucker by these people. They only breed for profit with no concern about the long term prospects of the puppy."
A properly bred small dog should be within a healthy weight range for its breed. Very occasionally, a puppy may be smaller due to health issues - an ethical breeder will always disclose this and never charge a premium or market the dog as “rare.”
RED FLAGS WHEN BUYING A PUPPY
• Use of the term “teacup” in ads or conversations
• Non-refundable deposits before meeting the puppy or seeing health documentation
• No health testing or documentation for parents
• Claims of “rare” colours or sizes with high price tags
• Refusal to allow visits or answer questions
HOW TO FIND RESPONSIBLE BREEDERS AND CLUBS
Perfect Pets connects you with fully verified Dogs Australia (ANKC) breeders who follow a strict code of ethics and care standards. For advice and support, you can also find breed clubs and associations here.
Teacup dogs may look cute, but their tiny size comes with significant health risks and ethical concerns. If you want a small companion, choose a dog that is an appropriate, healthy size, and always ensure you're dealing with a reputable breeder.
Any breeders who’d like another avenue to connect exclusively with Dogs Australia (ANKC) Breeders can join for free here, or contact info@perfectpets. com.au for more information.

Dances With Dogs Club Of Qld Seminar
– Maree Rablin
The weekend of 7-10 June 2025 was one the Dances With Dogs Club of Qld have been waiting a long time for.
This was the seminar with international guest presenter Anastasiia Beaumont which was held at the beautiful indoor Double J Agility Arena in Mudgeeraba.
Anastasiia Beaumont has been involved in ‘dog dance’ since 2013 and currently competes with her dogs Yuki and Salsa (both Border Collies). Through her business, DogDanceMania, she has conducted training and workshops in France and Europe (including workshops in Switzerland, Belgium, Poland, Estonia, Italy, United Kingdom, Spain and Israel).
Some of her achievements in competition include:
• Winner of the European Challenge 2018 (Grand Prix France)
• Finalist of the OEC 2019 in freestyle
• Vice European Champion 2021 (OEC individual results)
• 1st place: World Championship 2022 (team results)
• DDI French Champion in HTM and Freestyle 2024
• Finalist, Romania’s Got Talent 2024. Examples of her routines can be found on Youtube at: https://www.youtube.com/c/ anastasiiabeaumont/videos
Saturday started with getting to know each other as Anastasiia worked one on one with many handlers, which included beginners through to advanced competitors.
During these sessions handlers showcased what their dogs could do. Anastasia then went through different aspects of our training that could help improve handler’s skills and ideas that could help our dogs maintain concentration better and work better during performances.
Just before lunchtime we learnt what it is like to be the dog, with a fun session on “How to know what your dog is feeling”.
By partnering up with another person, one being the handler and one being the dog (you could pick your own breed to be LOL). Handlers learnt about timing, when to give their dog/ person the commands for moves that had been choreographed by Anastasiia, whilst being in sync with the different timing in the music.
The complexity of this exercise is to place handlers out of their comfort zone, just like our dogs must feel sometimes. Trying to remember new choreography, listening to the timing and cues in the music whilst still giving the commands and giving the dogs plenty of time to do the required moves. This can be quite confusing, and it gives the handler a vision of how our dogs often feel if things are not trained correctly.
There was plenty of laughing done during this session as many handlers got lost in the choreography and many of the dogs/people weren’t quite so obedient. But we definitely got to know how our dogs can often feel.
Sunday was quite cool, so we started off with a warmup which consisted of stretching and warming up our bodies as we were about to learn some of Anastasiia’s own choreography.
We learnt how to use our arms, heads and eyes while calling the commands our dogs needed to perform this beautiful choreography. Most handlers thought they would not look as graceful as Anastastiia but they were pleasantly surprised with themselves. Once again, a good fun session which warmed our bodies and filled our hearts with laughter to start the day.
During the afternoon more one on one sessions with many different problems solved and many handlers having “light bulb” moments when Anastasiia showed us how things could be done easier by changing just a few little things in our training.
Monday was Advanced Day with many of our advanced handlers and dogs working together.
During these sessions our advanced handlers got to pick Anastasiia’s brain on how to break down and learn the more advanced and often complex moves and choreography. It is always a priority to learn how to perform these moves safely for our dogs.
Tuesday was private lessons with Anastasiia.
It was lovely to have a fresh set of eyes on how we are training here in Australia. It was even better to see so many brilliant minds and dogs all working together to improve the sport of Dances with Dogs. Lots of notes and video were taken to remember everything we learnt.
While here in the sunny but chilly Gold Coast Anastasiia got to see many of our iconic Australian animals at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary and also go whale watching, and to a performance at the Australian Outback Spectacular as well seeing all over the Gold Coast from the dizzy heights of the Q1 building.
It was hard to say goodbye as Anastasiia as she heads off to Sydney for another seminar. But I’m sure we will have her back here in Australia in the future.
The Dances With Dogs Club of Qld would like to wish Anastasiia safe travels and all the very best wishes as Anastasiia starts preparing for her own competition session with her amazing Border Collies, Salsa and Yuki.

An Historic First For North Queensland! Burdekin
Canine Club Inc. hosts the region’s first SprintDog™️ Trials!
– Donna Mulholland
What an exciting weekend it was for the North Queensland dog community! The Burdekin Canine Club Inc. made history by hosting the very first SprintDog™️ trials ever held in North Queensland – and it was an unforgettable event filled with enthusiasm, achievement, and community spirit.
SprintDog™️ is a unique and thrilling sport where dogs don’t compete against each other but instead race the clock to earn points and titles based on their own individual performance. It’s all about personal bests, progress, and celebrating every dog’s unique ability – and North Queensland dogs rose to the occasion!
Across the two-day trial, one of the most exciting highlights was the performance of Gabby, a local whippet who had never tried SprintDog™️ before. Gabby’s natural talent and determination saw her earn enough points to be awarded the Novice SprintDog™️ (N.SPRD) title – all within a single weekend! Her handlers, and the crowd, were absolutely thrilled.
She wasn’t alone. Eight more local dogs came incredibly close to achieving their own N.SPRD
titles, a clear sign that the potential for this sport in our region is sky-high. Even more inspiring is that for most of the dogs and their owners, this was their very first time participating in SprintDog™️, making their achievements even more impressive.
A proud milestone came on Sunday’s first run, when the Burdekin Canine Club Inc. recorded a flawless round – every single dog completed their run successfully with no excusals. It was a moment of pride for the club and a testament to the care, training, and enthusiasm of all involved.
Competitors and supporters joined us from as far as Tasmania, Brisbane, and Rockhampton, showing the growing interest in SprintDog™️ around the country. But the heart of the event was truly in North Queensland, with most of the entries coming from local dogs – many of whom were trying the sport for the first time.
On Saturday afternoon, after the official runs, we hosted a fun training session. This allowed dogs who were excused earlier in the trial, and those not entered, to try out the sport in a supportive,
relaxed environment. This was one of the highlights of the weekend – filled with wagging tails, laughter, and lots of learning.
The positive feedback from attendees and spectators was overwhelming. Many spectators were inspired by what they saw and are now asking how to become Dogs Queensland members and register their dogs as associates so they can participate in future events!
A weekend like this wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication and support of so many wonderful people:
A heartfelt thanks to Dogs Queensland for giving us the opportunity to host this historic event:
• Nic Mather, whose knowledge, guidance, and passion for the sport helped bring it all together.
• Our amazing judges and operators, Leah Perry and Nic Mather, for their professionalism and support throughout the weekend.
• Karen Gordon, who handled catalogues and ShowManager paperwork behind the scenes.
• Julie Howarth, for her incredible effort in organising our team, mentoring the committee, and bringing the essential timing gates.
• Penny Parker, who came up from Brisbane with Nic and Leah to take photos for us.
• And of course, to all the wonderful exhibitors and their dogs, who embraced this new sport and made the weekend truly special.
Congratulations to Naomi Shaw who passed her practical judges assessment and passed her practical Lure Operator assessment to now be a Recognised SprintDog™️ Lure Operator. Being based in Rockhampton, Naomi will be an asset to the SprintDog™️ community.
Thanks to the overwhelming support, enthusiasm and laughs, the Burdekin Canine Club Inc. is already looking into hosting more SprintDog™️ trials in the near future.
North Queensland has officially joined the SprintDog™️ community — and we’re just getting started.
“BEST…. WEEKEND…. EVER!”

• Encourage puppy buyers to verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland and make direct inperson contact with you.
• Ensure puppy buyers check communications are made with verified contact details.
• Encourage puppy buyers to meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.
As a buyer what can you do to avoid being a victim of a Puppy Scam:
• Verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland.
• Ensure communications are made to verified contact details.
• Meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.
• If paying online, use a credit card or PayPal where you have a degree of buyer protection.
• Check website is an established site with a website security certificate.
• Avoid websites without physical address or phone numbers.
• A sk for proof, including ANKC registration papers and veterinary health records for any puppy.
Importantly you should report any suspect sites or advertising to the ACCC ScamWatch website. Please let us know about any suspect websites too by contacting Dogs Queensland on 3252 2661 or by email at info@dogsqueensland.org.au.
