President’s Message
N“ational Volunteer Week was held from 19 – 25 May, 2025. This is a timely reminder for us to acknowledge our many volunteers.
Dogs Queensland is a volunteer based organisation.
From our Board members, club committees, stewards, and all those who provide training in so many ways to both our members and the public, we are truly grateful.
Whilst not everyone is in a position to commit to a role within a club or as an official at an event, there will be opportunities to promote responsible dog ownership and to educate the public about Dogs Queensland.
Dogs Queensland will have a promotional stand again at this year’s Ekka which will be held from 9 – 17 August 2025.
We will be seeking volunteers to assist with staffing the stand. Further details appear below.
People attending the show with their dogs can assist on the day by bringing “people friendly” dogs to the stand. The public thoroughly enjoy interacting with
our beautiful dogs. So please do assist when you can.
2025 Brisbane 'Ekka'
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of our members and staff who help make Dogs Queensland a success!!!
Thank you!!!
”Carolyn Ryan

IRISH WATER SPANIEL
The Irish Water Spaniel combines utilitarian function and striking appearance, making it a remarkable breed in both recreational and competitive settings.
Patrik Berger Photography
– Penelope Smith
HISTORY OF THE BREED
The Irish Water Spaniel (IWS) is one of the oldest spaniel breeds, with roots tracing back to the 17th century in Ireland. Known for their prowess as hunting companions, especially in waterfowl retrieval, the breed played a significant role in the development of other spaniels.
The Irish Water Spaniel is believed to be influenced by various breeds, including the Portuguese Water Dog and the now-extinct Tweed Water Spaniel. The breed was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1884. Notably, they have a reputation for being less common compared to other spaniel breeds, but they have maintained a devoted following among enthusiasts who appreciate their unique characteristics.
TEMPERAMENT
The Irish Water Spaniel is known for its lively, intelligent, and independent nature, but can be aloof to strangers. They are often characterised as:
• Energetic: IWS requires regular exercise and mental stimulation due to their high energy levels.
• Intelligent: They possess a keen intelligence and are quick learners but can sometimes display a stubborn streak.
• Affectionate: They can be loyal and affectionate companions, forming strong bonds with their families.
• Playful: Known for their playful demeanor, they enjoy engaging in games and activities, especially those involving water.
SUITABILITY FOR FAMILIES
• Good with Children: The IWS generally interacts well with children and can be a playful and protective companion in a family setting.
• Active Lifestyle: They are best suited for active families who can provide them with the exercise and stimulation they crave. Regular walks, playtime, and swimming are ideal activities.
• Training: Early socialization and obedience training are essential to help curb their
independent nature. They respond well to positive reinforcement techniques.
The Irish Water Spaniel (IWS) is indeed a breed characterized by its unique physical attributes and specialized construction designed for swimming and retrieval. Below is a refined description that incorporates details, emphasizing the features relevant to breed judging and general appearance.
GENERAL APPEARANCE OF THE IRISH WATER SPANIEL
When judging the Irish Water Spaniel, the overall impression should be that of a "keg on legs". This distinctive body shape is crucial as it not only aids in buoyancy and efficiency while swimming but also provides ample room for lung capacity, which is essential for this active breed.
KEY CHARACTERISTICS
• Body Structure: The barrel-shaped body is a hallmark of the breed, allowing for a rolling gait reminiscent of a "drunken sailor" when in motion. This unique movement stems from the breed's standard design, where the combination of loose skin and dense hair contributes to a fluid, rolling effect as the dog moves. When the dog moves at a faster pace he should be seen as having a great reach and drive with the overall power coming from the rear movement .
• characterized by dense, tight curls throughout the body.
On the head, the hair forms soft ringlets that fall towards the nose in a distinct V shape.
This ringlets also extends to the legs and ears, enhancing the breed's unique aesthetic.
Notably, the area beneath the neck features a V-shaped pattern of smooth hair, contrasting with the curly coat.
• Facial Features: The Irish Water Spaniel has a soft expression, accentuated by pleasing almondshaped eyes that range from mid to dark brown, contributing to their gentle demeanour.
Facial features include sideburns and a beard, adding to the breed's distinctive profile.
• Tail: The breed possesses a unique "rat tail," which features one-third tight curls at the base, transitioning to shorter, straight hair towards the
tip. This tail structure further enhances the dog’s swimming capabilities.
When judging the Irish Water Spaniel , I always say approach the breed confidently, don’t speak over the top of them and I always suggest checking the teeth at the end of the examination.
The Irish Water Spaniel combines utilitarian function and striking appearance, making it a remarkable breed in both recreational and competitive settings. Their distinctive coat patterns, combined with their barrel-shaped body and engaging expression, highlight the importance of proper conformation in maintaining the breed's historical roles as a water retriever and versatile hunting companion.
In summary, the Irish Water Spaniel's appearance embodies both beauty and practicality, reflecting its evolution as an efficient gundog dog. When judging the breed, an appreciation for these attributes is crucial in supporting the preservation of its breed type.

Whelping Boxes
Whelping boxes – also known as nesting boxes or birthing boxes – are essential for providing a safe, controlled environment where a pregnant dog (bitch) can give birth and care for her puppies. Here’s a complete guide to understanding and choosing the right whelping box:
WHAT IS A WHELPING BOX?
A whelping box is an enclosed area designed to:
• Give the dam (mother dog) a safe, quiet, and clean space to give birth.
• Contain the puppies safely during their first weeks of life.
• Prevent accidental crushing of puppies by the dam using rails or bumpers (also called pig rails).
• Keep the area warm and sanitary.
IDEAL FEATURES OF A WHELPING BOX
1. Appropriate Size
• Big enough for the dam to stretch out comfortably.
Ian's Whelpers
• Small enough to prevent puppies from straying far from her warmth.
2. Pig Rails
• Bars around the inside edges to stop the mother from accidentally squashing her pups against the sides.
3. Low Entry Door
• Easy for the mother to enter and exit, while still containing the puppies.
4. Non-Slip Flooring
• Ensures puppies can grip the floor, reducing risk of injur y (like swimmer puppy syndrome).
5. Easy to Clean
• Materials like plastic or sealed wood are good; some use removable liners or absorbent pads.
6. Temperature Control
• Heat lamps or heating pads may be added for warmth, especially in cooler climates.
TYPES OF WHELPING BOXES
TYPE
DESCRIPTION PROS CONS
Plastic Durable, easy to clean Lightweight, waterproof Can be pricey Cardboard (e.g., Dura-Whelp boxes)
Wooden (DIY) Custom-built at home Fully customizable Heavier, needs sealing to resist moisture
Puppy Playpens Adaptable spaces with Multipurpose May lack pig rails with Liners soft or plastic lining
Disposable Single-use, Cheap and easy Not durable, Cardboard budget-friendly absorbs moisture
CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE
• Change bedding daily (puppy pads, vet fleece, or clean towels).
• Disinfect the box every few days with pet-safe cleaner.
• Check temperature: keep it around 29–32°C (85–90°F) during the first few days.

CANINE PHOTOGRAPHY AT ITS BEST
In the last of our series showcasing exceptional canine photographers in the Sunshine State we point the spotlight on images taken by Tracy Hopper from TAK Photography.
While many Members would know Tracy from the number of hours she spends behind the lens at Conformation Shows – particularly podium shots, many dog enthusiasts may not be aware she's also available for studio and location bookings.
THROUGH THE LENS: Where Canine Passion Meets Photography
There's a special magic that happens when two passions intersect. For me, that moment came in the early 2000s when I acquired my first pedigree Staffordshire Bull Terrier, creating the perfect subject for a love of photography that began in my teenage years.
I still remember the weight of my father's Pentax 35mm in my hands – a trust that I wouldn't drop his prized possession and my gateway to capturing life's fleeting moments. Those early experiences taught me something crucial: the best photographs don't just document; they reveal what others miss.
The dog show circuit presents unique photographic challenges. From the API show weekends to Western Classics and Dog of the Year events, I've documented the passion of the dog community. What began as photographing my own Staffies expanded to helping friends, then to official photography for Breed Specialties, and eventually to All-Breed Shows, and now to running a Portrait Studio while earning several awards along the way.
Whether in studio settings or natural environments, the fundamental challenge remains: honouring the subject's true essence within the frame.
As dog enthusiasts, we understand that our time with these remarkable animals is limited. Photographs freeze moments that would otherwise exist only in memory. They immortalize that perfect stance, that joyful expression, that defining characteristic that made each dog uniquely special.
In a world dominated by smartphone snapshots, there remains profound value in approaching photography with intention. The difference between a casual photo and a thoughtful portrait isn't just technical quality—it's the ability to reveal character and tell a story without words.
The ribbons may fade and trophies gather dust, but a powerful image of your dog in their prime will always bring you back to the joy and beauty of your journey together. After all, dogs give us so much in their brief time with us. Preserving those memories through thoughtful photography isn't just documentation—it's an act of gratitude.

Breeder Alert –Puppy Scam Websites
Dogs Queensland has become increasingly aware of Puppy Scam Websites using legitimate Dogs Queensland Registration and Queensland Breeder Identification (BIN) Numbers to sell puppies. Dogs Queensland Registration Numbers are obtained from legitimate websites such as Dogs Queensland or DogzOnline, where they are displayed as required by the Queensland Government.
Please see the Queensland Dog Breeder Fact Sheets for regulations and guidelines for Queensland Dog Breeders.
An example of a typical scam is:
• A Dogs Queensland Membership number is lifted from current advertising on the internet.
• The scammer researches and obtains personal details of the breeder including name, suburb, prefix.
• A domain name similar to the Kennel prefix is registered on an offshore registry.
• Once the breeder has ceased advertising the litter of puppies a new website is published.
• No physical address or phone numbers are advertised on the website.
• The seller avoids permitting you to physically see the cyber puppy and only sends non genuine pictures.
• The seller insists on only accepting payment by a crypto currency or a funds transfer.
As a breeder what can you do to avoid being an unknowing victim of a Puppy Scam:
• Regularly Google search the internet for websites using a similar Domain Name as your Prefix.
• Put a warning notification in your online advertising to alert buyers to check any website they are looking at is legitimate.
• Encourage puppy buyers to verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland and make direct in-person contact with you.
• Ensure puppy buyers check communications are made with verified contact details.
• Encourage puppy buyers to meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.
Dog Tales My Hero
‘The bond between a human and their dog is unlike no other.’
– Charles Schluz
This true story recounts the unbreakable bond between a girl and her Rough Collie, a connection that endures to this day.
Tasha scanned the depths of her kitchen cupboard, her gaze fixed on locating the candles she was certain she had placed there. Shifting a bottle of furniture polish, her eyes landed on the three candles she sought. A smile stretched across her face as she retrieved them from the cupboard's shadowy recesses. Now, her only task was to recall the lighter's whereabouts. A quick rummage through a nearby drawer yielded the familiar gadget that she needed. Candles held a special charm for Tash; their gentle glow and sweet fragrances invariably soothed her.
The recent days at work had been particularly demanding, and she eagerly anticipated the simple pleasure of lit candles, a show on television, and a comforting glass of wine. From his bed in the corner of the room, Arlo, her devoted Rough Collie, observed her familiar ritual. Their small duplex was their sanctuary, a space Tash had lovingly transformed into a cosy haven for both of them.
A soft hum escaped Tash's lips as each candle's wick caught the light. The final candle found its place in her bedroom, the thought of drifting off to sleep surrounded by the calming scent of lavender held a peaceful anticipation. With a glass of wine poured, she sank onto the plush cushions of the couch. She let out an audible sigh. A gentle thump of Arlo's tail greeted her reaching hand as she stroked his soft fur. Arlo was her constant companion, joining her on every possible outing, with the long weekend hikes holding a special place in their routine. A mental note formed – new trail shoes were a necessity, and a fleeting thought of their cost crossed her mind. Her savings were diligently accumulating, each dollar bringing her closer to the cherished dream of owning her own home.
She savoured a sip of wine and smacked her lips, the subtle fragrance of the candles mingling in the air. Reaching for the remote, she switched on the television, eventually settling on an engaging show. Leaning back into the comforting embrace of the cushions, a sense of tranquility finally washed over her.
The insistent rhythm of Arlo's barks began to weave its way into Tash's peaceful slumber. Opening one eye, she saw Arlo nudging her face with his wet nose. A groan escaped her lips; her dream had been particularly enjoyable. ‘Arlo, enough', she murmured, her voice still thick with sleep. She turned onto her side, she buried her face back into the soft cushions. The couch, with its inviting plushness, often became a temporary substitute for her bed during late-night movies. Undeterred, Arlo let out another series of sharp barks. Tash attempted to ignore him. Arlo then darted to her bedroom before returning to sit expectantly at the edge of the couch, a low whine and growl rumbling in his chest. Still, Tash remained unresponsive. Once more, Arlo repeated his frantic journey to the bedroom and back, his barks growing more urgent. Annoyance began to prick at Tash's grogginess. Finally forcing herself to sit up, she blearily regarded her persistent canine companion. Arlo then made a beeline for the sliding door, his agitation escalating with each passing moment.
Tasha rubbed her face and adjusted her glasses. ‘Arlo, you’re being a real pain now! What on earth is wrong?’ she gently scolded. Arlo responded with a wagging tail and a soft whine, his brown eyes fixed on her with a pleading intensity. As Tash continued to observe his unusual behaviour, an unsettling feeling began to stir within her. Could he be trying to tell her something important? She frowned, the last wisps of sleep finally receding. Arlo’s barks grew more insistent, each one punctuated by a frantic dash towards the door. A sudden surge of curiosity propelled Tash off the couch. Arlo mirrored her urgency, racing back to the bedroom before stopping directly in front of her, his imploring gaze accompanied by a soft whine.
Then, it struck her – the candles! Her eyes darted to the kitchen, where the flickering remnants of two candles remained, one reduced to a mere stub, the other barely alight. Tash sprang into action, quickly extinguishing the nearest flame. She then hurried to her bedroom, where the final candle burned. The sight that greeted her sent a jolt of fear through her – hungry flames were already licking at the edge of the blinds, and faint trails of smoke curled in the air.
Tash chided herself for her forgetfulness and her
procrastination in fixing the faulty smoke alarm. She had been putting off phoning the company for the last two weeks! Without hesitation, she grabbed the encroaching blind and blew forcefully at the tenacious flame. It danced defiantly, resisting her efforts. Taking a deeper breath, she blew again. The orange tendrils of light flickered but stubbornly remained. One final, determined exhale finally extinguished the threat, leaving behind a small, waxy remnant. Tash took a steadying breath; it had been a dangerously close call. Black smudges smeared across the bottom of the blind.
She turned to Arlo, who had been a silent, watchful presence throughout the ordeal. A soft whimper escaped him, followed by a slow wag of his tail, as if understanding the averted danger. Tash knelt down and wrapped her arms around her loyal companion. A chilling thought crossed her mind, sending a shiver down her spine – what if Arlo hadn't been there?
hero,’ she whispered into his fur. Arlo responded with an enthusiastic wag of his tail and gentle licks to her face. After one last grateful squeeze, Tash gathered the offending candles and tossed them into the bin.

Vale - Eileen Jones
Eileen Mavis Jones, born on 31 January 1930, and passing on 17 April 2025, was a dedicated figure in the dog show community and married to Vic Jones – a Life Member and Honorary Councillor of Dogs Queensland. Eileen's journey in the world of dog showing began when she requested a Cocker Spaniel as a gift during her pregnancy with their daughter, Margaret.
For 72 years, she supported Vic by caring for their dogs, nurturing litters, and assisting him in his roles as President and Vice President of various clubs, including the Gundog and Heavy Breeds Club, which he revitalized in the 1960s.
Eileen was known for her hospitality, often entertaining judges at home and working tirelessly in the canteen. As Margaret grew up and participated in dog shows, Eileen was always by her side, providing unwavering support.
A passionate lover of American Cocker Spaniels, Eileen had a special bond with a notable dog named Dolly – the first of her breed born in Australia. Vic later bought another from the same kennel but as Eileen spoilt this girl, she
would only show for her.
At a Brisbane Royal one year, Joe Braddon, a well known judge from the UK, refused 1st place and handed Eileen a 2nd place ribbon. Eileen gave it back to the judge and walked out of the ring.
The President of the CCC Henry Phillips, was so angry he took it to the ANKC annual meeting to have a rule that no judge can refuse a first place.
This rule still stands today, so we can thank Eileen for it.
Throughout her life, she travelled the world with Vic on his judging assignments, meeting many esteemed breeders and judges.
Eileen leaves behind a loving family, including her husband, daughter, six grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, and one greatgreat-granddaughter.
Her contributions to the Queensland dog community and her warm presence will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

SprintDog - Nearly 12 months later!
– Nic Mather (Queensland State Representative: Dogs Australia National SprintDog Committee)
What a massive 10 months it has been. SprintDog became an official Dogs Australia sport on 1 July 2024. Since then there’s been no turning back.
Queensland has dogs ranging from untitled, all the way to SprintDog Master officially gained by “Chewie” (Owner by Penny & Aaron Parker) –CHEWIE SPRD.M CAM.
At this point, Chewie is the only dog in Australia to have achieved the title of SprintDog Master. Penny who not only has been our resident photographer for SprintDog and Lure Coursing, has now competed with her dogs in three different states. Hard core dedication that is!
The sport attracts dogs and their owners from all “walks of life”. We have dogs who have never done anything other than Conformation Showing or lounging about the house coming along to chase that trash bunny, all the way up to dogs competing in many sports such as “Barney” the Papillon (AG.CH 300. SAILOZ MOONRAKER GD. ADM. ADO. JDM. JDO. SDX. SPDM. N.SPRD TK.I.) or “Spud” the Associate with his list of accolades (SPUD RN. SWE. SWX. SWV. TK.I. N.SPRD. CAM. SWC. TSD. SWI. SWM).
When I thought about where SprintDog would fit in, it was a sport for those who always wanted to see if their dogs would chase a lure but were not sure they would do Lure Coursing (and many have started at SprintDog and continued on with Lure Coursing very successfully), but also a sport where those who retired from Lure Coursing could still chase the trash bunnies. If you hadn’t been told that “Enzo” the American Staffordshire Terrier (RIZENSTAR NEVER LET ME GO(AI) CAX.) was 9.5 years old, in the photo below you’d have thought he was well and truly still a young stud!
“Chewie” – CHEWIE SPRD.M CAM. “Enzo” – RIZENSTAR NEVER LET ME GO(AI) CAX.
The atmosphere at a SprintDog Trial is electric. Handlers are either grinning from ear to ear or being as loud and as exciting as possible but when “Spencer” the Puli is running (NARNIA SUPER STAR) there is dead silence whilst we wait for Spencer to cross the finish line.
Spencer had smashed the unofficial trials but caught a case of stage fright as it seems when the sport became official he decided to give his family mini heart attacks. Then one day his favourite human Ben, donned the famous pink jumper and he did it. The surrounding exhibitors cheered so loudly when his little cluster of cords made it across the finish line signalling the flag drop. There may have been some wet eyes in the house. Spencer is now over the halfway mark to his Novice SprintDog Title.
We started the year off with a tribute (an adaptation of “the Fourth Hound” / “The Fourth Dog” by Cindy Ackerman) to our furry friends lost in the last 12 months, with those who lost dogs standing in the start box and all other exhibitors lining the shute in support whilst the lure was run down the track, one more time.
“Look not at the line For I am not there But out on the track
I am everywhere. No need for a catcher
Nor a slip lead I run like the wind
With determination and speed. Watch for me on the lure
I’ll be in full stride
I’ll be the one running With friends at my side. After all the dogs have run The trial comes to its end I’ll watch over you Your ever faithful friend. So when you hear “Tally-Ho!”
In your memory, I will run... For I am your dog and I’m still having fun!”
The SprintDog Community have really come together to make great progress on the dedicated SprintDog Track. With the help of Dogs Queensland, the track now has one side fully fenced with the other side expected to be finished in June 2025. Little by little the grass spreads and grows. It’s been quite a journey which of course has been plagued by rain in true SprintDog fashion, but each step is a step further and the future is looking very exciting.
The Inaugural Dogs Queensland SprintDog Subcommittee Trial will take place on the 6 July 2025 with all going well will be on the new track! On 21 and 22 June 2025 SprintDog will appear in Far North Queensland with Burdekin Canine Club holding two SprintDog Trials at Home Hill Showgrounds.
The sport now has 6 Judges and 5 recognised Lure Operators, with more in training.
If you’d like to find out more about the sport or holding a trial, email the Dogs Queensland SprintDog Subcommittee on sprintdogsubcommittee@dogsqueensland. org.au
Until next time, Tally-Ho!

• Encourage puppy buyers to verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland and make direct inperson contact with you.
• Ensure puppy buyers check communications are made with verified contact details.
• Encourage puppy buyers to meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.
As a buyer what can you do to avoid being a victim of a Puppy Scam:
• Verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland.
• Ensure communications are made to verified contact details.
• Meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.
• If paying online, use a credit card or PayPal where you have a degree of buyer protection.
• Check website is an established site with a website security certificate.
• Avoid websites without physical address or phone numbers.
• A sk for proof, including ANKC registration papers and veterinary health records for any puppy.
Importantly you should report any suspect sites or advertising to the ACCC ScamWatch website. Please let us know about any suspect websites too by contacting Dogs Queensland on 3252 2661 or by email at info@dogsqueensland.org.au.
