Teaching with Geodes
DUET BOOKS After building their retelling and letter-sound recognition abilities through Module 1 and 2 books, students are ready to transition into decoding words, phrases, and simple sentences with Duet Books. These Module 3 and 4 books are designed to be read by an emerging reader with the support of an adult, or more advanced, reader. As students read these books, they apply their phonics learning—growing in independence, accuracy, and stamina.
ROUTINE TO CONSIDER FOR DUET BOOKS 1. Read the title aloud. Then direct students to the back of the book and read the teaser aloud. 2. On page 1, have students read the text assigned to the child independently, using a subvocal technique such as a whisper phone. 3. Then read the adult text and any text features, including captions and labels, as students follow along in their books. 4. Repeat steps 2–3 for the remaining pages. To maximize student engagement and practice, ensure that each student is given the opportunity to read as many child-read parts as possible. For example, in small groups, all students may read the child-read text subvocally at their own pace while the teacher listens carefully to each student in turn. Then the teacher can read the adult-read text as all students follow along in their books. When the teacher stops reading, that is the cue for students to begin reading the next child-read text section. Following practice with the teacher, consider allowing students to continue practicing the child-read portions of the text independently. If students have mastered the Level K phonics learning, as specified by the Fundations® scope and sequence, they may be ready to access the whole text of select Geodes. See page 46 of this teacher resource for specific titles with more accessible adult-read text. For additional information on how to support students as they read Duet Books, see pages pages 43–46 of this teacher resource.
