About section: An account of the illustrated story.
Book Notes: A section of Inside Geodes that offers flexible teaching opportunities for each book.
Context paragraph: A paragraph that orients students to the characters and setting portrayed in the illustrations throughout the Sound Search Books. Each page spread includes one Context paragraph.
Duet Books: Books designed to be read by a child and an adult reader. The child-read text is marked with a triangle icon, while the adult-read text is marked with a circle icon. These are the book types featured in Modules 3 and 4.
Focus Concept: The phonetic concept that corresponds to a unit in the Fundations® scope and sequence.
Focus Letter Sound(s): The letter sound(s) that correspond(s) to a unit in the Fundations® scope and sequence. Note that in the Sound Search Books, Focus Letter Sounds are listed rather than Focus Concepts.
Fundations® Decodable Word: A word students can sound out based on their current knowledge of phonics. In
Geodes, words are considered decodable if they contain phonetic concepts that correspond to the taught skills in the Fundations® scope and sequence.
Fundations® Trick Word: A high-frequency word that commonly appears in written English.
module: In Geodes, a module refers to a collection of books that share a connected topic. In Wit & Wisdom, a module refers to a unit of study.
More section: A short, informational selection that expands on and enhances the content in the Geodes. This section is on the inside back cover of each book.
My Geodes: A take-home, markable book that includes all four books in a set. Each module has four My Geodes.
Oral Recurring Content Words: A small collection of content-based words aligned with the topic of a module. While these words are beyond students’ current decoding abilities, students are encouraged to use this vocabulary when discussing ideas in a module or synthesizing their knowledge on a topic. These words are included in the Book Notes for Modules 3 and 4.
page spread: A pair of pages to be viewed together. For example, in Sound Search books, pages 2–3 would be one page spread.
set: A collection of books that share a common subtopic related to the module’s topic.
Sound Search Books: Books that assist students in boosting their letter-sound recognition skills by having students find pictures associated with the sound of a given letter. This is one of the book types featured in Modules 1 and 2.
Sound Search section: A page spread at the beginning of the Sound Search Books that lists select illustrations and corresponding words that begin or end with the Focus Letter Sounds featured in the book.
Task paragraph: A paragraph that sets the purpose for students’ letter sound search. Each page spread within the Sound Search Books includes one Task paragraph.
teaser: A text excerpt plus a question placed on the back cover of each Geodes book to develop student curiosity.
Wordless Picture Books: Illustrated, wordless, story-based books that build students’ understanding of basic narrative sequence. This is one of the book types featured in Modules 1 and 2.
