Vacation Mode Off, Productivity On
As the last days of summer approach and we prepare to exchange our swim trunks, fireworks and flip-flops for long pants, jackets and weather sensible footwear, it’s not uncommon to feel a sense of sadness as autumn approaches. Regardless, just as seasons change, work continues its rhythm and we look forward to the rapidly approaching holiday season (hopefully!) with excitement and anticipation.
It was amusing to hear my youth group kids this past week bemoaning the fact that school is starting, but when we chatted one on one they almost always confided that they are excited to start their new school year and get back into a routine. (I’m sure their parents feel the same).
I remembered feeling similar feelings of not wanting summer fun to end but craving the challenge and excitement that comes with moving forward in life, and offered words of encouragement to do their best and pursue their interests.
It’s been a busy summer, and we hope you were able to take some time to rest and recharge. Here at TWICE we’re busily prepping for our annual CEDIA coverage and looking forward to the retail madness in Q3 and Q4. Before you know it, we’ll be back at CES in 2024!
It’s interesting that life can seem to stand still or rushes by in a flash, never stopping. Thinking about how busy things have been, I recalled a teacher from my FFA days in Texas relating
what some might call “The Law of the Harvest”, which in simple terms is, “If you want a harvest, you must sow the seed and tend the crop. You can’t plant carrots and expect apples.”
In business terms, our actions (seeds and tending) determine what successes we see later on. It can be easy to look at a single day or data point and wonder why we aren’t seeing the results we want now. Keep in mind that while some seeds sprout and mature quickly, there are others that take years but provide for more than a season. Author Robert Louis Stevenson said, “Don't judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds that you plant.”
What seeds are you planting today? Are you still providing the level of service you did when you started (planted/sowed)? What areas of your business could use a little more tending? Perhaps it’s encouraging your staff and showing them some much needed appreciation. Maybe it’s going out of your way to give back to the community in ways you haven’t before. Whatever your situation, remembering “The Law of the Harvest” can help keep things in perspective.
This month, TWICE brings you all the winners of the 2023 TWICE VIP Awards, and we’d like to thank everyone who nominated products for the 2023 TWICE VIP Awards, and send a hearty thank you to all of you who voted this year. Enjoy the last days of summer and be well. See you at CEDIA!

Your Website Is An Experience Center –Like It Or Not
By Dave Chace, Founder and CEO, Cogent360
In the high-end consumer electronics market, you sell experiences, not stuff. That’s why the industry’s leading dealers and integrators continue to invest in experience centers. The vast majority of your prospective customers, however, your website will be their first encounter with your brand and the products you carry.
It's time to invest in making your web experience as jaw-dropping as an in-person experience center. Websites influence the vast majority of purchases, whether or not the final sale takes place online. The more expensive the product or service is, the more likely consumers are to visit multiple websites while researching their decision. An immersive, engaging website can give a custom electronics dealer a massive advantage—pardon my French here, but most websites are très boring.
As the retail e-commerce world has already discovered, 3D product models and interactive virtual experiences are one of the most effective ways to transform your website into a compelling experience. These tactics are even more powerful in the CI industry, where experience is everything. Here’s how 3D gives you a head start on a digital customer journey.
INSTANT SEARCH RANKING BOOST
Though consumers often go directly to Amazon or another marketplace for smaller items, most people research their major purchases using a search engine. That means Search Engine Optimization (SEO) matters –your website needs to tick all the little boxes that can help get you ranked on the first page of results. Fun fact: 3D is great for SEO.
Investing in 3D for your website gets you an automatic boost: Google actively crawls the web for 3D models and prioritizes those pages higher in its search rankings. The SEO benefits don’t stop there, though. Offering a 3D experience on your homepage encourages visitors to click through, exploring your site further instead of navigating away. This lowers your “bounce rate,” which is also good for your rankings.
TIME ON YOUR SIDE
3D product models – particularly in the context of a rich, interactive virtual experience – can dramatically increase “session duration,” the amount of time a potential customer spends on your site. A virtual environment, like an interactive 3D showroom or model home, can help guide the experience while giving the customer the freedom to explore.
Consumers have been shown to spend up to five times longer “playing” with an interactive virtual experience than they would reading a static page about a similar product or service. That time investment correlates strongly with dollars. Across vertical markets, longer session durations are associated with higher purchase intent. Interactive 3D has been shown to have an especially dramatic effect on sales conversion. Case studies from Shopify have found that customers are dramatically more likely to purchase an item after interacting with it in 3D.
SPEND SMARTER
3D product models are a smart marketing investment, not just because they help your site rank higher and draw customers in, but because they are less expensive than traditional marketing assets. Product photo galleries don’t just look old-fashioned compared to an interactive 3D model; they also cost a lot more to produce and update.
Think about it: A high-quality model allows you to “photograph” a product from any angle or in any environment without the cost of resetting a shoot. You can create magazine-ready lifestyle images without renting and styling a space. When you update your product offerings, you can incorporate the new products into the existing virtual environment. Virtual assets deliver ROI year after year.
A full-scale virtual environment can also deliver massive value and savings outside your website: these lightweight immersive experiences allow you to bring interactive demos to client consultation meetings, tradeshow booths, sales meetings, product trainings, and more at a minuscule fraction of the cost of shipping and setting up physical demos. They’re more exciting, reliable, and dependable than any Pelican case worth of gear.
Most CI companies haven’t substantively changed how their websites work in 20 years. 3D models and virtual environments can give you a slicker site than any of your competitors, positioning you as a 21st-century player while they’re stuck in the 20th century.
A great sales experience starts on your website: when people open your site, make sure they see the future, not the past.

Why Mid-Summer Is The “Prime” Time To Attract Shoppers
Prime Day can yield great results for your brand, too
By Julia O’Connell, Director, Deals & Merchandising, Ziff Davis Shopping
Amazon Prime Day 2022 broke records, as consumers purchased more than 300 million items and drove nearly $12 billion in sales.
Prime Day has become the most anticipated shopping event of the year and has overtaken Labor Day as the main late summer retail holiday. However, it doesn’t just generate massive sales for Amazon, it also can pay dividends for retailers and marketers who smartly piggyback on the event to drive their own sales.
Over the years, we’ve seen many retailers offer counter-programming to Amazon, like Walmart's Deals for Days and Target's Deal Days. In 2022, 105 merchants participated in Prime season-specific discounts and promotions across Ziff Davis Shopping brands (which includes BlackFriday.com).
Although Prime Day 2023 is over, now is the prime time for retailers to begin preparing for Prime Day 2024. Prime Day also coincides with the unofficial kickoff of the back-to-school shopping season, so consumers already are more inclined to make purchases compared to other times of the year. Marketing to these shoppers during Prime season could yield an even greater return on retailers’ marketing investment.
Ziff Davis Shopping surveyed 1,000 adult shoppers to uncover Prime Day trends and insights that retailers and marketers can leverage to boost their own sales. Here’s why
midsummer is a “prime” moment to put deals in front of shoppers and how to successfully capitalize on Prime Day to attract and convert new customers.
THE PRIME DAY OPPORTUNITY
To make the most of Prime Day, it’s crucial to understand just how large this shopping event is, the most popular Prime Day retail categories among shoppers, and how the Prime Day audience may overlap with the segments you want to target.
First, 75% of households have an Amazon Prime membership. Most of these households — 81% — also use deal sites, indicating these shoppers prioritize both convenience and price. The group of shoppers Ziff Davis Shopping surveyed closely mimicked these patterns, as 76% of them live in a Prime household.
Prime Day has become ubiquitous, and 96% of the shoppers we surveyed plan to make a purchase. A small percentage will browse and only buy if they spot a can’t-miss deal.
Electronics (59%) and clothing, shoes and apparel (49%) are the most popular categories among consumers by a wide margin, followed by beauty and skincare and the bedding, linens and towels category (24%, respectively).
Consumers plan to divide their loyalties almost evenly between Amazon and other retailers on Prime Day. They’ll spend an average of $250, $150 of which will go to Amazon and the remaining $100 of which they’ll spend with other retailers.
Given these figures, it’s clear retailers who strategize effectively and have the right game plan can capture some of these Prime Day dollars, along with back-to-school shoppers who are ready to buy.
5WAYS TO BOOST MID-SUMMER SALES DURING “PRIME” SEASON
Up your content game
Optimize promotional levers that engage deal-minded and savvy shoppers during Prime Day. Rich editorial deal content and immersive product content is the best way to drive more engagement.
On your direct-to-consumer site or marketplace channels outside of Amazon, think about 360-degree videos and highquality images that showcase your products. Offer flash sales on social media and create optimized product pages with searchfriendly terms and compelling details. Produce sponsored blogs that round up the best deals across your inventory or even advertise your deals on a third-party site.
Start early
Prime season only may be two days, but your campaigns should start well before then and run for weeks — right up to and during Prime Day on July 11th and 12th. Focus on reaching consumers before this shopping event with targeted ads across search, social, the web and mobile.
Amazon often reduces prices on its own branded merchandise right before Prime Day, so offering your own discount and backto-school- deals during the pre-sale period can help you stay competitive and capture shoppers who are already on the hunt for good buys.
Don’t forget about brick-and-mortar
Amazon might have an advantage when it comes to its fulfillment experience because of its same-day and one-day delivery options. But many retailers have an upper hand that the online behemoth doesn’t have: a physical storefront.
Offer buy online, same-day pick-up in-store options to capitalize on your brick-and-mortar advantage. On Prime Day 2022, brick-andmortar retailers experienced a 20% increase in conversions compared to the same period

SHUTTERSTOCK
the year before, so this online shopping event also can influence offline sales.
Optimize your mobile experience
Much of the action on Prime Day will take place on mobile, so delivering an engaging mobile experience may help you win new customers and compel existing ones to make a purchase.
Many consumers use mobile to pre-shop and educate themselves before they make a purchase. Deliver an optimized experience on both your app and the mobile web and produce dynamic creative ads to give consumers all the information they need to make an informed buying decision.
You also should tailor mobile content to each stage of the customer journey, so use any customer data at your disposal to deliver the most relevant, impactful messaging as customers move through the funnel or app lifecycle.
Continually engage shoppers
There’s a sales long tail with Prime Day, meaning consumers are still open to making a purchase even after this shopping event ends.
Just as you should start early with Prime Day deals, it also pays to keep the discounts and promotional offers rolling immediately after this event. Use the subsequent one to two week-period after Prime Day to continuously market to shoppers, especially since back-to-school season will be in full swing.
You may need to adjust your campaign messaging or even the discounted inventory you offer to better align with what shoppers are looking for post-Prime day, but the extra effort could pay off in incremental sales.
Getting the Most out of Prime Day
Prime Day doesn’t just provide a sales boost for Amazon, it can yield great results for your brand, too. Last year, online retailers experienced a 141% sales bump compared to the year before because of this shopping event, so there’s potential for Prime Day 2023 to deliver similar results.
Smart retailers who employ a range of counter sales strategies — from same-day pick-up in-store options to pre and postPrime Day discounts — will be well positioned to make mid-summer a prime time for boosting revenue.
Tearing Down The TV Walled Garden
By Geir Skaaden, Chief Product & Services Officer, Xperi
The smart TV market has grown exponentially over the past few years, accelerated by the coronavirus pandemic which pushed people to consume most of their entertainment from the comfort of their own homes, and the home entertainment market continues to evolve. Grand View Research predicted that the global smart TV market is expected to expand at an annual rate of 11.4% from 2023 to 2030.
With all this promised growth, smart TV original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and providers are faced with a market of endless potential if they meet consumers’ needs.
The allure of having everything you need with one provider is powerful, especially when it is a well-known brand. When partnering with a well-known TV operating system provider, TV OEMs get the benefit of the operating systems’ name brand recognition and customer base. And while there are benefits, this ends up taking away any consumer knowledge of the smart TV’s brand name and it keeps consumers inside a walled garden, limiting their entertainment options.
THE WALLED GARDEN EFFECT
As streaming has grown exponentially, there has been a consolidation of TV providers, studios and subscription services that work to serve themselves and their advertisers. As the advertising market shifts in a big way from linear programming to streaming, TV
providers, studios and subscription services are heavily incentivized to limit consumer choice and bias search towards the services they own to drive revenue.
Part of the issue is the way viewers’ data is used. Smart TVs rely on having a heavy stream of data from their users, which everyone must opt-in to, because if they don’t smart TVs won’t work properly and, for all intents and purposes, won’t be “smart” – no longer gleaning insights on the viewers’ preferences and interests.
Unfortunately, the economic incentives for big tech TV providers are to use this data to create biased solutions that are geared toward their subscription services and shows, and they limit the full diversity of what is available to keep viewers in their wall gardens. While the situation may sound less than ideal, there are ways to put the power back into the hands of viewers .
A CUSTOM VIEWING EXPERIENCE
When watching TV, people want to sit back and relax, but the current experience is challenging. Most people have a tough time managing which apps and services they have subscriptions to, and the constant shuffle of which streaming service has which TV series or movie causes confusion and frustration.
Current smart TVs are focused on pushing viewers to find our shows and movies in the apps, instead of directly bringing us the content directly. If TV providers focused on making their search content-forward, viewers would have a much easier time finding and watching the content they want. This is where independent platforms come into play.
It’s time to move past the traditional environment where content is difficult to find. On independent, neutral operating systems for TVs, content that is relevant gets pushed directly to viewers regardless of who the provider is. The goal is to help people find content they never knew existed and break consumers out of the walled garden.

Painting The Ship Care
By Henry Clifford, Founder & CEO at Livewire
Afew months ago, Livewire came down with a bad case of low morale. It’s a funny thing, morale. When it’s great, you feel unstoppable, like you could stomp through the floor. When it’s bad, finding the reason why can be like nailing Jell-O to the wall. To some degree, low morale and depression feel like distant cousins — they both come out of nowhere and feel like a weight pressing down on your chest.
This particular slump began around the time I got wind that one of our employees was threatening to leave Livewire. That’s nothing new. People have come and gone from our company over the last 20 years. Most of the time it’s a mutually agreeable decision. Occasionally, it’s someone who passes the “keeper” test (would you fight to keep someone threatening to leave?). I really wanted to keep this employee and, more importantly, figure out what caused things to get so bad for them that they would consider moving on. That way we could put out the fire and leave a fire extinguisher behind for next time.
As I began my investigative journey into our low morale, I kept stumbling on causes which I’d sworn we’d already addressed. In fact, we had addressed many of them…five years ago. Just like a large aircraft carrier, it takes a lot of time to “paint the ship” in a business. By the time you finish, it’s time to start again. Many businesses fall prey to the
“one and done” approach when it comes to implementing lasting initiatives. In this case, I’d fallen flat on my face, trying like hell to implement change, only to be thwarted by my own inaction on the initiatives we already had on the books.
What to do? I considered curling up in the fetal position and crying for my mom. I considered sticking my head in the sand. I also considered yelling, stomping, and screaming. None of these genius ideas really made it past the spit-balling stage. As I drove home yesterday, it hit me like a ton of bricks. We needed to spread out the give-a-damn organizationally in a way that we’d perhaps begun a few times but never sustained. That give-a-damn is personified and summed up with a single word: champion
What on earth is a champion? Imagine someone in your company doing their day job but also excited about keeping an eye on your showroom — making sure you always have the latest technology installed, managing budgets for upgrades, getting comps from vendors, and keeping abreast of the latest and greatest methods for perfecting the “art of the demo.” It’s not the business owner. It’s not necessarily someone on your leadership team. It’s someone in the company who decides to step up and make that part of the business their area of pride (thanks to OneVision’s Brad Camp for giving me that phrase).
Here are a few parts of our business
where we solicit champions to step up and make it their own:
Design Center: If you’ve ever found yourself looking at your demo room or customer show homes and realizing you’ve gotten behind the 8 ball keeping things up to date, look no further than an enthusiastic junior salesperson to help keep things fresh. If you challenge them to plan and budget for upgrades, you’ll be amazed at what they’ll do on their own. We’ve had great success doing this with lighting, 2-channel audio, and videoconferencing.
Equipment Demo: If you’ve found yourself pulled in many directions as an owner, you might feel a slight twinge of guilt around staying fresh with technology. It’s hard work to stay up to date on all the latest gear. We implemented a program where vendors donate gear to us and we assign an employee to review products and present findings to the entire team. We began this a couple of years ago, and it’s had its stops and starts. We’ll be refreshing this program later this year in an effort to keep us all from calcification.
The next time you’re feeling like the weight of the world rests on your shoulders, consider there might be some great people on your team who would love the chance to carry some of that weight. It’s a great opportunity to groom future leaders and can really give you an early insight into a new employees’ work ethic and initiative.

AirHood™ is a portable range hood that removes grease, smoke, and cooking odors, and stops oil films from forming on surfaces. It keeps the air and kitchen countertops clean while adding a friendly but non-intrusive touch to any kitchen. It is our vision to make clean cooking accessible to everyone, anywhere, and at any time. Indoor air quality has become a growing concern, and harmful VOCs created during cooking are a key contributor to indoor air pollution which can affect people's health. This revolutionary wearable monitors eye movements to help consumers better understand sleep quality and disruptions that are key to wellness insights and improving sleep.

(or even all three) goes a long way to differentiating your product from a crowded market and putting a spotlight on the hard work that led up to its release.
Each entry is judged by an industry professional. We’re keeping them secret so they can visit your CEDIA Expo booths anonymously, but there is a (very) good chance you’ve seen them in the pages (both web and print) of the brands they represent.
Here are three ways to catch our judges’ eyes:
Tell your story. Your entry form is a blank slate — use it for more than specs, although include those as well! This is your chance to tell the judges the thought behind the creation and building of a product.
First Impressions. Have you had any residential integrators beta-test the product? Provide any kind of feedback? Offer any impression on how your product performs? Make sure to include it.
Life Changing. What kind of impact do you intend this product to have on the installer and the end user? What sets it apart from similar products? You know why it’s better, make sure the judge knows why, too.

LG’s First WOLED Panel Shipment To Samsung Reportedly Underway
Deal comes on the tail end of multi-year negotiations
By Derek Wiley
According to Korean newspaper The Elec, this month will mark the first shipment of WOLED panels from LG to Samsung for a TV that is scheduled to be revealed later in the year. While the shipment is reportedly small, it seems that orders scheduled for next year will be much larger in quantity.
Some are speculating that the panels being delivered are for an 83-inch OLED TV that will feature a LG Display WOLED panel. Based on a report by Business Korea, this TV
is rumored to be announced around the time of IFA.
The Elec’s report also mentions that the ordered WOLED panels require special customization, meaning they must be manufactured at LG’s plant in Paju, South Korea–not overseas in China.
“Samsung has also requested that LG Display develop a WOLED TV panel under the specification it wants,” the report reads. “Sources said Samsung and LG Display are in near agreement that the panels will be 77-inch and 83-inch in size.”

Review: AKG Ara Dual-Mode USB Microphone By Harman
A high-quality, affordable desktop USB mic for content creators and music makers
By Grant Morgan
The AKG Ara Dual-Mode USB Microphone by Harman (model C22) is the latest addition to the renowned AKG brand’s lineup of microphones, and it’s a standout choice for content creators and music makers alike. This dual-mode USB microphone is designed to deliver professional-quality sound with utmost convenience, whether you’re at your desktop or on the go.
FEATURES
The AKG Ara captures high-resolution sound at up to 24-bit, 96kHz resolution, ensuring crystal-clear speech clarity and stunning vocal and instrument tracks. This elevates the quality of your recordings to a professional level, whether you're a podcaster, YouTuber, gamer or musician.
One of the key strengths of the AKG Ara is its versatility. With its two capsule array modes with dual pickup patterns, you have the flexibility to focus on a single voice or instrument or capture everyone in the room.
The directional Front (cardioid) pattern is perfect for podcast hosts, bloggers, gamers, and recording instruments, as it allows you to focus on sound directly in front of the microphone while rejecting noise from other directions. On the other hand, the Front + Back (omni) pattern is ideal for capturing interviews with multiple speakers, tracking multiple singers and instruments, or recording ambient sounds in different locations.
The compact footprint of the AKG Ara
makes it adaptable to any space. It also comes with a weighted, integrated base stand, but you also have the option to use it with a desktop boom arm or a common microphone stand. This versatility ensures that you can position the microphone in the most convenient and optimal way for your recording setup.
Setting up the AKG Ara is easy, thanks to its USB connectivity and its compatibility with almost any device, making it a plug-and-play solution. Whether you're using a Mac, Windows computer, iOS, or Android device, connecting the AKG Ara is as simple as using a standard USB-C connector or an OTG adapter. The microphone also features a built-in headphone jack, allowing you to monitor your audio in real-time without latency issues.
TESTING EXPERIENCE
TWICE was able to get hands-on testing of the AKG Ara and we put it through a series of recording situations in our home office studio setup, primarily as a desktop podcasting mic and an ambient guitar recording mic. Firstly, the recorded sound quality exceeded our
expectations, with the 24-bit, 96kHz resolution delivering exceptional clarity and depth to our recordings. Speaking vocals sounded rich and detailed, and our guitar playing was captured with precision while reaffirming our significant other’s claim that we need to practice a lot more and not quit our day job quite yet.
We liked how easily the selectable focus patterns provided the versatility needed for different recording scenarios, allowing us to isolate individual voices or capture the ambiance of the room. We found the controls on the front of the mic to be intuitive and easy to operate, and it was easy to switch between patterns, adjust the mic volume, and monitor our audio with the built-in headphone jack.
Setting up the AKG Ara with our PC and Samsung smartphone was a breeze, thanks to its plug-and-play functionality. The microphone was recognized immediately without the need for additional drivers or software installations.
VERDICT
The AKG Ara Dual-Mode USB Microphone by Harman is a standout choice for content creators, podcasters, gamers, and musicians seeking professional sound recording. Its ability to capture high-resolution audio and its selectable focus patterns offer versatility and adaptability for various recording scenarios
The microphone's plug-and-play simplicity and compatibility with a wide range of devices make it incredibly user-friendly and at just over $100, it’s a great microphone for budgetconscious content creators.

Summer Busking, Had Me A Blast: Top Tips For Beginners To Busking
Audio setup suggestions from Shure for aspiring street musicians
By Laura Davidson, Market Development Manager at Shure
Have you ever sat outside in a park or at a restaurant and thought “Wow, I’d love to hear some music right now?” Thankfully, with the warmer weather and the summer upon us, busking is about to pick up full steam to provide us all with the proper ambiance for outdoor activities. Busking can be a great way for local and amateur musicians to make a few bucks and get exposure, but there are a lot of rookie mistakes that can happen to make a busker go from desired detail to noisy nuisance. If you’re looking to get into busking this summer, here are some tips for a seamless session:
THE TROUBLE-FREE TROUBADOUR
The nature of busking means you’ll be on the go fast and often – meaning bringing around an entire four-piece band is likely not the most efficient way to get from one venue to another. When you’re schlepping your equipment around town, keep in mind that you should stick to the non-negotiables:
• Amplifier – This is arguably the most important piece of equipment for you to
carry around. An amplifier will ensure people can hear you and makes certain you don’t completely blow out your voice by trying to project your voice past its limits. Since this is the most important, it’ll also be the most expensive. For beginners, I highly recommend checking out Reverb, an online marketplace to buy used music gear where you can get great quality amps for half the price. If you’re looking to invest a bit more, the BOSS Cube Street II is my pick – it has
incredible sound and is battery-powered for easy travel purposes.
• Microphone – You can have the best amp in the world, but it can only make you sound great when paired with a great microphone. While there are a lot of microphones on the market, it’s easy to see why the Shure SM58 is the gold standard – it is the world’s most famous mic for a reason. The mic’s state-of-theart shock mount keeps your sound free of vibration and the iconic windscreen makes it a breeze to have clear and crisp audio even when it’s, well, breezy. Its durable construction is made to withstand being tossed around in bags, cars, trains, and more. It’s not too expensive either – a nice plus.
• Tablet – Unless you have a photographic memory (and bless those that do) you’ll need to have your music in front of you while performing. Instead of carrying around sheet music and a stand, consider bringing a tablet to digitally hold all your music – most mic stands will have attachments that make this easy.
BUSKING IN THE BIG BUCKS
Many people use busking to scrounge up some extra money – so how do you best capitalize on that? Most spectators don’t carry around a ton of cash or singles with them, so bringing a small sign with digital payment methods is a great way to make it easy for people to leave you tips. Make sure you have all the big players included –Venmo, Zelle, Cashapp – so that everyone has an option.

SCN Hybrid World Review: Why Jabra Evolve2 65 Flex Headset Might Be The Right Fit For Your Office
Amazing ANC and a really useful app help set this headset apart
By Mark J. Pescatore - Systems Contractor News
As someone who has used more than his fair share of average and low-end headsets, it was nice to have the opportunity to test the Jabra Evolve2 65 Flex. This is a highperformance headset that is built for long days and noisy offices.
SOFTWARE ASSISTANCE
The free Jabra Direct software provides a platform for changing several settings for a more personalized performance. It also provides access to a five-band EQ, which gives you some control over the overall tone of your music, but it can also cause noticeable distortion if you set the treble too high. Probably best to keep the presets in place until Jabra can provide a software update.
I preferred Jabra Sound+, an app that you can download for your phone and offers some nice features. For one thing, the EQ in this app did not cause distortion. I was very pleasantly surprised with the “Soundscape” option, which offers a variety of background noises—from white noise to a babbling brook—to mask your environment. There’s even MySound, which provides a short hearing evaluation that can help tailor your audio experience based on your hearing.
A major selling point for the Evolve2 65 Flex is comfort. It is honestly one of the most comfortable headsets I’ve ever worn.
Between its lightweight design (less than 5 ounces) and what the company is calling Jabra AirComfort Fit, it’s easy to wear this headset for long periods of time.
NOW HEAR THIS
I tested the Jabra headset on phone calls and videoconferences, with no audio complaints from either side of the conversation. Incoming calls sounded crisp and clear. Bonus points for Jabra ClearVoice technology: I turned on some music for one call, but the microphone did a great job filtering the background noise. One feature I appreciated was the ability to mute the mic by moving the boom arm up (and unmute when you pull it back down). You can also flip the boom arm down to answer a call.
The Evolve2 65 Flex has very good sound reproduction for conversations and music. The headset had no problem maintaining its Bluetooth connection to my phone within 100 feet, but connectivity distance was significantly less when using the Bluetooth adapter connected to my Microsoft Surface.
Above everything else, what really sold me on the Evolve2 65 Flex was its ANC technology. As a native Floridian, I know the importance of planning for hurricane season. So, I decided to put the headset, which does not feature closed-back headphones, to the ultimate test: Play “Maybe Later,” a delicate ballad from Lowen and Navarro, while testing my portable generator.
You’ll be happy to know my generator started with the first tug of the pull cord. What’s more impressive is that I could clearly hear the music, delivered wirelessly from my iPhone via Bluetooth, while standing over said generator. With the ANC enabled, the very loud engine registered more like a dull hum. The performance was truly impressive.
The Evolve2 65 Flex is not an inexpensive headset. In fact, at $329, it’s one of the pricier choices on Jabra’s website. But it’s a great solution for tech support personnel in a busy office or travelling team members trying to stay focused between flights.

Denon’s New Wireless Earbuds Are Bose And Sony Rivals That Can Measure Your Hearing
The clever buds can create a bespoke listening profile
By Harry McKerrell - What Hi-Fi?
Denon has launched a new PerL range of wireless earbuds. Standing for “Personalised Listening”, the PerL earbuds hope to stand out from a fiercely competitive market by using parent company Masimo’s patented “Adaptive Acoustic Technology” (AAT), which allows users to create a personal audio profile for a unique listening experience.
The new PerL range consists of two models, the premium Denon PerL Pro and
the Denon PerL.
According to Joe Kiani, Founder and CEO of Masimo: “The era of one-sound-fits-all is over. PerL automatically figures out the optimal sound for each individual to cater to your unique ears... With the launch of PerL, we are transcending the listening experience (and) we can’t wait to have our customers join us in this new paradigm.”
Using Masimo’s expertise in medical technology solutions, the AAT feature is designed to automatically measure your hearing, to create a profile perfectly tuned to
you by measuring faint otoacoustic emissions (OAEs). These OAEs are analysed to determine how sensitive a person’s ears are to given frequencies, with the AI-powered Denon PerL app then adapting the sound accordingly to provide a more bespoke hearing profile.
In terms of audio quality, Denon claims “a streaming experience similar to listening to a CD”. To that end, the PerL Pro provides support for Qualcomm AptX Lossless audio and also spatial audio courtesy of Dirac Virtuo. The Pro also support Bluetooth 5.3, adding aptX Adaptive, aptX Classic, AAC and SBC to the aforementioned Lossless codec.
The cheaper, standard PerL model also features implementation of AAT, with Bluetooth 5.0 supporting the AAC, SBC and standard aptX codecs, but with no support for spatial audio. There’s no two-way multipoint connectivity for the base PerL model, either, but this is a feature offered by the more premium PerL Pro counterpart.
Battery life for the PerL Pro is eight hours on a single charge, with a total of 32 hours with the charging case via a USB-A to USB-C connection. Quick charge provides an hour of playback from a five-minute boost. By comparison, the standard model offers six hours of battery life on the earbuds, totalling 24 hours with the charging case. A ten-minute charge, meanwhile, gives an hour of playback.
Both models offer ANC, with a transparent “social mode” which lets in some exterior sound for better environmental awareness. The PerL Pro boasts eight microphones in contrast to the standard PerL model’s four for upgraded noise cancelling, automatically adjusting the level of cancellation according to the amount of environmental noise.
The Denon PerL Pro and PerL will cost $349 and $199, respectively.
A limited number of these wireless earbuds are currently available for purchase at Denon. com in the US only. The models will arrive in the UK in autumn, and a full global launch is expected to roll out “later this year".

LG Is Refocusing Its TV Division, Which Means You’ll See More Ads On Your OLED TV
LG’s plan to expand its TV business hinges on webOS
By Lewis Empson
LG Electronics has announced that it will begin taking its TV business in a new direction starting this year, in line with its connected smart home ambitions. It’s hoping to become a “smart life solution company”, but what does this actually mean? And how will it change how you use your LG OLED TV? Well, unfortunately, the biggest change seems to be more ads.
During a speech in Seoul, LG CEO William Cho announced that the TV division will spearhead the forthcoming development of LG as a whole, as well as some of the specific
changes we can expect. The smart life solution company refers to adding its technological expertise into smart homes, transport and commercial situations, whereas the TV strategy seems to be focused on webOS.
LG's strategy here is to include more advertising within the operating system and more ad-supported services on webOS, with a focus on expanding LG Channels; the brand's free-to-stream competitor to the likes of Pluto TV and Samsung TV Plus. Considering the higher level of ads on screen was a pet peeve of ours expressed in our LG OLED G3 and OLED C3 reviews, we're not entirely on board with this new direction.
While the idea of more ads being loaded onto our already rather expensive LG OLED TVs doesn't exactly enthuse us, LG promises that it's all part of a grander scheme to evolve it into the connected smart life company that it aims to be. This includes further integration with LG's smart home ecosystem for a connected home, as well as expanding LG's TV division past the hardware and into a fully-fledged 'media and entertainment service provider'. Call us old-fashioned, but we prefer our TVs to prioritize the watching and gaming experience, however, only time will tell as to how the future of LG TVs will pan out.

TCL Moves Further On From Roku, Starts Shipping Amazon Fire TV-Powered Smart TVs In The U.S.
By Daniel Frankel - NextTV
Nine years ago, China’s TCL shipped the first smart TV’s powered by the Roku TVOS.
The proverbial "hey, you got chocolate in my peanut butter!" concept transformed the nascent smart TV industry. Wired at the time called it "the first TV worth using," with the intuitive Roku OS replacing the typically clunky user interfaces found on most off-the-shelf TVs at the time.
Last year, powered by what had been an exclusive software licensing agreement with Roku, TCL surpassed Korea's LG as the No. 2 smart TV supplier in the global market, controlling over 11% of pie, second only to Korea's Samsung. Roku, meanwhile, rode the partnership to become the dominant TVOS supplier in North America.
But the strong, exclusive bond so successfully leveraged by TCL and Roku has frayed.
Three years ago, TCL started shipping smart TVs to the U.S. powered by Google's Android TV OS (and later Google TV). By January 2022, TCL said it was selling around 10 million of those Googlepowered TVs a year.
Meanwhile, earlier this year, Roku started making its own TVs. Two weeks ago, TCL announced that it was starting to develop its own TVOS.
And further and further apart the two companies continue to move.
The latest (yes, we've waited until the seventh graf to tell you this): TCL has also now partnered with Amazon and will soon bring an iteration of its Q6 line of midrange QLED display sets to America powered by the Amazon Fire TV OS.
The new Q650F line of Amazon Fire TV-powered TCL sets is available in 55, 65 and 75 inches with 4K resolution and 60Hz
refresh rates. Prices start at around $450.
TCL already introduced in the U.S. Q6, Q7 and QM8 series product lines powered by the newer Google TV OS earlier this year.
As for Amazon, it's notable that TCL entered a sponsorship deal with the NFL in January and has subsequently carved out arrangements with individual NFL teams including the Atlanta Falcons and Seattle Seahawks.
For its part, Amazon is now the exclusive home of NFL "Thursday Night Football." So synergy opportunities to leverage the Fire TV ecosystem probably await.

Samsung TVs Just Got A Major Accessibility Upgrade — What You Need To Know
Meet SeeColors, now easier to access than ever
By Malcolm McMillan - Tom’s Guide
Accessibility features are an important part of choosing the best TV for you and some Samsung TVs and computer monitors just got a serious accessibility upgrade.
Samsung has announced that SeeColors mode will be added to its 2023 TV and monitor lineup. Specifically, the feature will be added to Samsung’s Neo QLED TVs, QLED TVs and OLED TVs, as well as its smart monitors. SeeColors will also be available on the Samsung G95SC gaming monitor. This announcement was made after the organization TÜV Rheinland awarded Samsung a “Color Vision Accessibility”
certification for its SeeColors feature.
SeeColors is aimed at those with color blindness or other color-related vision impairments. It offers viewers nine presets that change the red, green and blue levels to ensure that users with these vision impairments can differentiate between colors no matter what they're watching.
INCREASED ACCESSIBILITY IS TRENDING UP
This isn’t the first accessibility feature aimed at those suffering from colorblindness that
we’ve seen in recent weeks either. A recent deep dive into the Android TV OS 14 beta showed that Google seems to be working on its own Color correction accessibility feature to allow those with color vision deficiencies to better view TV shows and movies on Google TV or Android TV.
Similar to SeeColors, this feature would offer users picture presets that correct colors to ensure those with color blindness or similar issues can view colors distinctly. However, Google’s possible feature has the presets sorted by the type of color blindness that one is suffering from. The three presets are Deuteranomaly (redgreen), Protanomaly (redgreen) or Tritanomaly (blueyellow). There is also a Grayscale option.
SeeColors has been around as a separate application for some time now — since 2017. But now, the accessibility feature will be available directly from the accessibility menu on eligible TVs and monitors. All you need to do is download a software update on your eligible TV or monitor.
Samsung has not said when the software update will be available, but the indication is that it will be available soon if it isn't already. Hopefully, this feature will be available in the accessibility menu by default on future Samsung TVs and monitors.

Your store is stocked with the latest bleeding-edge technologies for sale. But how do your customers know how much each of those high-tech wonders costs? Likely via decidedly low-tech paper or plastic price tags.
It may be time to make your shelf labels as high-tech as the products for sale on your shelves. Earlier this year, the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) released a new scalable, low-power, and secure wireless standard and specifications for e-paper electronic shelf labels (ESL).
ESLs have been around for nearly two decades, but lack of standardization, a combination of high cost and low ROI rationalization, and ESL vendor technology silos have stalled their widespread adoption. This new Bluetooth ESL standard removes many of these roadblocks and will allow ESL vendors to standardize their products. Retailers will be able to mix and match ESL products from different vendors and shop on performance rather than technology.
Standardization, according to a new report from the Bluetooth SIG detailing the new standard, “enable ESLs to become just one part of a wider smart retail wireless network that is able to aggregate and analyze data from several different use cases and devices to generate more intelligent insights and services.”
For consumer technology retailers, the new Bluetooth ESL standard offers a vast array of pricing, promotional, and operational advantages over old-fashioned printed labels that include automatic updates for more accurate and dynamic sale, competitive-matching, and omnichannel pricing alignment; better real-time inventory tracking and management; additional customer access to product, stock information, and product reviews; and, the ability to combine with NFC and QR
codes to link to additional information online.
“The introduction of the Bluetooth electronic shelf label (ESL) standard will help minimize barriers to ESL adoption to unlock the next phase in retail digital transformation and deliver better outcomes for both stores and shoppers,” says Chuck Sabin, senior director of market development for the Bluetooth SIG.
When combined with Bluetooth proximity services and mobile devices, Bluetooth ESLs also can help provide tailored proximity-based promotional offers or upsell recommendations and help monitor traffic around certain products or in-store.
“With Bluetooth ESL, retailers can respond swiftly to pricing adjustments, market trends, and promotional strategies to drive meaningful interactions with shoppers while also gaining valuable customer behavior data to uncover growth opportunities and increase profitability,” Sabin adds.
Considering the depth and breadth of Bluetooth, the new standard promises future scalability. As the report notes, the Bluetooth ESL standard “is likely to enable a much wider number of Bluetooth chipset and ESL solution providers to address the market, while Bluetooth chipset solutions and reference designs specifically addressing the requirements of the ESL market are likely to emerge. This will enable greater product choice, increased competition, a larger supply of products and wireless chipsets, global availability, faster time to market, and collaboration from a wide number of players across the value chain.”

U.S. Tech Industry Remains Global Leader As Consumer Preferences Change
Mid-Year Forecast offers in-depth analysis of U.S. technology industry’s role as a deflationary economic force
By CTA
New research from the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) projects U.S. technology retail revenues to reach $488 billion in 2023, a $3 billion increase from CTA’s January forecast. CTA’s monthly inflation tracker shows 76% of consumers are spending the same or more on technology products and services than a year ago. However, CTA anticipates continued pressure from inflation and predictions of a recession will decrease consumer spending in the second half of 2023.
This trend highlights consumers’ willingness to keep spending and the industry’s role as a deflationary force amid ongoing economic uncertainty. Tech advances help improve productivity and combat inflation. Productivity gains come from greater efficiencies that rely on new technologies and better deployment of technology.
“U.S. consumers are leaning into software, services and streaming, and are enjoying the incredible value of affordable smart speakers, TVs and smart phones,” said Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of CTA. “As former Department of the Treasury Counselor Steven Rattner noted recently, new technologies can serve as a deflationary force for the economy. Our industry’s dynamic nature improves the customer experience and propels industries to discover innovative and more efficient methods of driving commerce."
Consumer technology industry revenues will remain
roughly $63 billion above the prepandemic high of $425 billion in 2019.
NOTEWORTHY TRENDS:
Overall industry average wholesale prices will decline 1% in 2023 at a time when inflation remains elevated and other industries continue to see rising prices. LCD TVs (-5%), laptops (-2%), smart speakers (-5%), smartwatches (-4%), wireless earbuds (-1%) and home game consoles (-7%) are projected to decrease in price this year.
Cloud-based game streaming and multiplayer access will see 10% revenue growth by the close of 2023. Fitness subscription services will also grow 25% over the same period.
Foldable smartphones will gain significant popularity, with 12.1% growth projected from 2023 through the end of 2024.
Despite slower than average TV sales, OLED TV revenue is estimated to grow 7% to $3.4 billion by the end of 2023.
Portable gaming console revenue will jump 50% this year, to $1.6 billion.
Public policy has a pivotal role in the technology industry’s economic trajectory, and CTA advocates for policies that
support American innovation and protect consumer interests. Shapiro added, "To bolster the success of U.S. businesses, we should forge new trade agreements with America’s friends and allies and stop arbitrarily punishing companies for growth and success.”
METHODOLOGY
CTA employs a consensus methodology to compile its forecasts, gathering estimates of expected annual total industry volumes from manufacturers, retailers, industry analysts, publications and other sources. These estimates are then averaged and adjusted based on additional qualitative inputs, year-to-date trends, CTA consumer research and historical growth rates. Multi-year projections cannot account for unpredictable factors such as pandemics or changes in trade laws, interest rates and federal policy.

Josh.ai Brands Itself As A Full Control Solution
While Josh.ai launched in 2015 as an advanced AI for the custom home, it has since grown into a complete control solution. Through years of development refining robust integrations, innovative features, and purposeful design, the Josh.ai platform has laid the groundwork for smart homes going forward. This evolution has culminated in a new control solution for CI dealers.
JOSH.AI AS A FULL CONTROL SYSTEM
As the industry’s mindset evolves, Paul McGuire from Konex AV (CA) speaks for many Josh.ai dealers when sharing his personal experience: “I was introduced to Josh back when it first started, but never got involved. I was then given a takeover job from another dealer that had installed Josh in a project, and I realized how easy it was — it auto-senses everything. Josh was more than just voice — it’s touch, voice, and text — and it convinced me that Josh is superior. I think the Josh platform is the right approach moving forward, and I’m using Josh in all my jobs. Josh changed my thinking as to how I program things.”
As a dealer-only product, Josh.ai is protective of its pricing information in order to preserve generous margin for its partners. When comparing the price points for various control offerings, McGuire looked at the overall costs of selling Josh.ai, and has “…sold eight systems so far. What I love is that Josh takes all the custom programming out of my
hands. When I look at overall costs, it actually is cheaper for me to use Josh. Josh comes with a great app that is customized automatically, but doesn’t need me to program anything, saving me and the client money. Josh includes voice as well, so it’s a no brainer for me. If you present it to a client this way, instead of as hardware and software line items, Josh is an easy sell.”
For professional installers seeking a modern control experience to present their clients, the Josh App combined with any of Josh.ai’s compatible remotes offers a full suite of intuitive tactile interfaces.
For clients looking for simple control without the need or desire to give voice commands, the Josh App’s settings menu provides the ability to disable microphone access. The Josh App equips users with remote accessibility when away from home and an attractive interface when presented on a wallmounted iPad.
JOSH.AI IPAD APP
A robust platform for personalization, the Josh App provides seamless control over everything an intelligent home has to offer. Clients enjoy a layout that includes quick access to their system’s settings, custom dashboards, devices, areas, and scenes. In addition to configuring a scene with devicespecific adjustments, Josh.ai’s Natural Language Scene Editor empowers users to type or voice dictate a scene’s activations and conditional automations.
With Josh Core and Josh Micro, installers
have an accommodating option for a control processor to fit any project. While Josh Core has been designed to fit in the rack with a co-developed Middle Atlantic shelving solution, Josh Micro can also run on POE and simply sit on a rack shelf. By deploying Josh Core and Josh Micro via POE, a direct connection to the local network ensures a reliable experience.
A differentiating feature with all Josh.ai’s integrations include auto-discovery of partner products, enabling rapid configuration and seamless control. Once a Josh Micro or Josh Core is deployed in a new environment, it instantly connects to the local network and begins detecting compatible devices for a reduced setup time when compared to other control platforms. Within seconds, users can freely interact with their surroundings through the Josh App.
After deploying a Josh.ai system, installers can use the remote support tools in the web-based Josh Portal (with no proprietary software to download). Josh.ai also diligently updates its integrations to ensure compatibility with new models and features to proactively support its connected device ecosystem. Josh.ai systems receive over-the-air software updates on a bi-weekly cadence, including new capabilities and integrations.
