CEDIA EXPO/CIX 2025 Q&A Training, Expansion, and AI

With more than 350 exhibiting brands and more than 50 new exhibitors this year, expectations are high for another great CEDIA Expo and Commercial Integrator Expo (CIX). Jason McGraw, CTS, group VP and show director of CEDIA Expo/CIX, Emerald, offered some insights about what 15,000 attendees should expect this week at the Denver Convention Center.

Q: We’re back in Denver for the third consecutive year. Is CEDIA Expo/CIX going to remain in Denver for a while?

Jason McGraw: Denver has been an incredibly popular location for CEDIA Expo/CIX, with 80% of attendees and exhibitors saying they enjoy it as a show destination. It offers everything we look for in a convention destination, including a top-tier convention center and plenty of hotel options. We’re excited to return to Denver again this year and in 2026. Starting in 2027, CEDIA Expo/CIX will return to a rotating city schedule, visiting different cities across the country each September.

Q: This will also be the third year for CIX. How has that show floor space evolved?

JM: While the primary focus of CEDIA Expo remains solidly on custom residential AV systems integration, since launching Commercial Integrator Expo (CIX), we’ve seen consistent growth in both interest and exhibitor participation, especially from brands focused on commercial solutions. Many well-known CEDIA Expo exhibitors have long offered products that serve both residential and commercial markets. But in recent years, we’ve made a strategic effort to expand the joint shows’ exhibitor base by attracting more commercial AV product manufacturers.

That strategy has paid off. The dedicated CIX area on the show floor has grown year over year, providing attendees with a broader and more comprehensive range of AV products and solutions. This growth reflects the reality of today’s integration market. More than half of CEDIA Expo/CIX attendees also work on commercial projects—and with nearly 75% of our audience attending only this event each year, it’s important that the show represents the full scope of their work.

Q: What are some of the hot trends on the show floor this year?

JM: Lighting continues to be one of the fastest-growing product categories at the show. We’re seeing strong momentum not just in low-voltage and LED fixtures, but also in lighting control like automated shades, smart dimming systems, and full light management solutions.

AI is another major trend this year. It’s becoming increasingly embedded in smart home and commercial technologies, from voice control and automation systems to security and energy management solutions. AI is not just a business buzzword—it’s showing up in real-world applications across the integration space.

Security technology is also expanding, with more products on the floor focused on smart surveillance, access control, and integrated safety solutions. Energy management is another growing category, as integrators look to offer smarter, more sustainable power solutions. We’re also seeing a surge in display technologies, especially in direct-view and microLED video walls for both indoor and outdoor applications.

Outdoor technology remains hot as well, driven by ongoing demand for enhanced outdoor living experiences. “Destination Outdoors,” located just across from the convention center and sponsored by key brands Coastal Source, Lutron, Draper and Access Networks, will offer hands-on demos of these solutions in real-world settings.

Q: What are some of this year’s training highlights?

JM: Located right on the show floor, the Smart Stage hosts thought leadership sessions covering a range of hot topics, from cybersecurity and lighting design to home theater and audio trends. It’s a great opportunity to hear from industry experts and get inspired.

CEDIA’s largest educational offering of the year features 100+ sessions across business, emerging technologies, design/build, and technical tracks. Most sessions include new speakers and fresh content for 2025. The CEDIA Education Conference is the annual destination for serious professional development.

Attendees also have access to free manufacturer product training (MPT) sessions during the show. These sessions offer a direct line to what’s new and how to implement it in the field.

The 8K Association (Booth 4501) will host daily sessions on the 8K ecosystem. Plus, IMCCA (Booth 526) will feature daily sessions on AI best practices and tips for AV and collaboration solutions.

Crestron Continues New Product Reveals

BOOTH 1901 It’s hard to miss Crestron’s massive, upfront booth at CEDIA Expo/CIX. Still, it’s not big enough to hold all of the company’s new product announcements, which is why Crestron held a preshow virtual keynote on August 27. The keynote introductions included updates to Crestron Home OS, a new remote control, new keypads, and ConfigurePro, the successor to Crestron’s current “Set-up App” and a big part of its show floor experience.

Michael Short, VP, marketing operations and residential, Crestron, offers some additional details about the keynote product introductions, all of which are on display at Expo: “The Crestron home update is about more music,” he says. “The brand-new remote is a very premium product that has been designed from the ground up for a very particular scenario. And the keypad news involves the Horizon range and some

Destination Outdoors Keynote

Edward J. Blair, Lutron president and vice-chairman of the board, has been announced as the keynote speaker of the Destination Outdoors Happy Hour, cosponsored by Lutron and Coastal Source.

Tonight

The happy hour runs tonight from 4-7:00 p.m., with remarks from Blair and Coastal Source founder/CEO Franco D’Ascanio beginning at 5:45 p.m.

Located at 1417 California Street, across the street from the Colorado Convention Center, Destination Outdoors is a 24,000-square-foot, fully immersive showcase of the latest innovations in outdoor smart technology, including high-performance AV systems, smart outdoor lighting, weatherproof displays, and automated shading solutions.

Blair and D’Ascanio will be sharing their vision on the future of connected outdoor experiences, as well as some exciting product announcements.

beautiful new premium finishes for them, along with a completely new range of keypads.”

What about the news at the show? “Two new partnerships are coming that are launching here at Expo—one to do with door lock and door entry, and another one to do with music,” adds Short. “There are also two pretty major shading design aesthetic feature updates coming.”

All these technologies—and then some—are on display at the Crestron booth and tied together thematically with the “three Cs,” which stands for content, collaboration, and control. “The overarching story of the booth is always going to be Crestron Home and the operating system,” Short says, “but underneath it this year, we’re focusing on those three pillars.”

And while collaboration is a vertical in the commercial market, for Expo, it has a different connotation. “Collaboration for the home for us is the story around the open ecosystem of the platform and the fact that Crestron Home cannot work independently without having a whole sphere of partners that collaborate and integrate perfectly with the platform,” explains Short.

With a new remote, keypads, and shade peripherals, Crestron clearly has design on the mind, which stems from greater interaction with architects and interior designers. Short says it’s a growing area for the company.

Heading into Expo, Short is optimistic about the industry and Crestron’s place in it. “I think dealers are looking for stability right now. Mergers and changes are happening that leave a level of uncertainty,” he says. “We’re at Expo this year to reaffirm that Crestron is the brand in the marketplace for you to hang your hat on and sell, not only from a product standpoint, but also from a business standpoint.”

7 Expectations for CEDIA Expo/CIX 2025

It’s hard to believe another year has passed, but CEDIA Expo/CIX is once again upon us! With just 24 hours of time over three days to see everything on the show floor, these are the top things I’m most excited to see!

1. Big demo rooms: Expo is the place to go for some of the biggest home theater demos. If you gather the best-of-the-best manufacturers and have them put some of their best gear together into a single room, you end up with something magical.

2. Home theater projectors: Expo remains one of the last great bastions for getting a home theater projector demo. What updates will we see to this category? One new model for sure is the Christie Eclipse G3, which will be having its moment.

3. Flagship soundbars: For years, I’ve been expecting to see high-end, premium bars make an appearance and that has started happening. Look (and listen) for the Klipsch Flexus Core 300, which includes Dirac room correction, Yamaha’s True X Surround 90A, which is the first bar to support AURO-3D processing, and KEF’s XIO, which incorporates the company’s Uni-Q driver technology.

4. MicroLED video walls: This technology con-

tinues to develop and impress. Will TCL bring its 163-inch X11H Max to Expo? Will Quantum’s fourth-generation XDR4-8K wall once again be my favorite display at the show, or will Barco’s prototype DCI 6×6 171-inch DV-LED wall be the new darling?

5. The old Sound United brands: Back in 2022, I highlighted Sound United as having the best presence at Expo. Fast forward three years and we’ve seen Sound United sold to Masimo, a medical supply company, and then sold again to Samsung Electronics’ subsidiary Harman International. What is this going to mean for this iconic stable of brands that includes Bowers & Wilkins, Denon, Marantz, Classé, Polk Audio, Definitive Technology, and Boston Acoustics? Hopefully we’ll find out at Expo!

6. Pickleball on the show floor: For the second year, we held a pre-Expo pickleball meetup. If you didn’t make it to that event, you can still pickle at Expo at the back of the hall (Booth 1551). If I’m not at a meeting or a demo, there’s a good chance I’ll be there!

7. That “new” thing: What will drive the next growth opportunity for the CI channel? What will be new in automation, lighting/shading, and surveillance? Will we see AI driving our next-generation installs? Let’s find out!

CEDIA Encourages Members to Join Advocacy Efforts

CEDIA urges members to get involved in advocacy to educate local lawmakers about the integration industry. And at yesterday’s panel discussion, “Fight for your Rights! Join CEDIA’s Advocacy Efforts,” experts discussed the importance of advocacy and education.

“The technology we work with is exciting, and it’s critical for the clients we serve,” said Darren Reaman, director of government affairs at CEDIA.

However, one of the challenges integrators face is being lumped together with electricians or security firms. CEDIA is lobbying for a distinct code for integrators in the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) and the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes.

The NAICS and SIC codes would help integrators access federal funding for workforce development and other programs. Even without the codes, Andrea Rokicsak, co-founder of AV Imagined, successfully accessed grants designed to bring unemployed or underemployed people into the workforce.

“Every single state has federal workforce development dollars that flow through the workforce agencies,” Rokicsak said. The grants, which also

covered tools, helped offset the costs for training four new technicians for AV Imagined for a period of three months.

Another key focus of CEDIA advocacy is keeping an eye on local laws that would require unnecessary permits or certifications for integrators. Integrators are generally exempt under Class II or Class III, but some lawmakers use voltage as a cutoff instead, which can affect integrators.

Will Breaux, director of business development

Future-Focused Education Program Set for CEDIA Expo/CIX 2025

CEDIA is unveiling a reinvigorated education program for CEDIA Expo and Commercial Integrator Expo 2025. This year’s curriculum, presented during the CEDIA Education Conference from September 3-5, is designed to deliver real-world insights, foster cross-industry collaboration, and provide clear pathways for ongoing learning.

“This year, we started from the ground up,” said Paul Dolenc, vice president of education & training at CEDIA. “We’ve moved beyond the familiar formats and topics and instead leaned into what integrators need now and in the future. The result is a program packed with diverse voices, advanced topics, and clear takeaways.”

The program features five tracks, covering business, emerging technologies, technical, certification, and design and build with classes tailored for both integrators and designers. Within these areas,

newly developed courses comprise a wide spectrum of business-critical subjects, such as “EV Charging Infrastructure: The Next Frontier in Home Energy,” “Creative Lighting Design: Practical Steps to Knock It Out of the Park,” “Energy Management & Microgrids: What Integrators Need to Know,” and “The Last 5%: Completing Projects with Excellence.”

The education program includes a collaborative format, with nearly all sessions featuring two or more presenters or panel discussions, offering contrasting perspectives from integrators, manufacturers, and thought leaders. CEDIA has also ensured that there is a clear next step to the training, with attendees receiving links to white papers, CEDIA Online Learning, and related sessions to continue the training journey.

“CEDIA board member Amanda Wildman has

for Unlimited Integration, shared a story of lobbying against a law in Houston by speaking before local officials. “We explained more in detail why you don’t want your local integrator to pull a permit to put speakers in your home,” Breaux said.

Laws at the local level can vary widely, but CEDIA keeps tabs on upcoming legislation for issues that would affect the integration industry. Recent examples of CEDIA efforts include language on tariffs that integrators can include in contracts. The boilerplate language drafted by attorneys references possible price increases due to tariffs. “Tariffs are obviously on everybody’s minds and how it will impact you,” said Daryl Friedman, global president and CEO of CEDIA.

Upcoming advocacy events include a Day on the Hill slated for March 2026 in Washington, D.C. Friedman urged integrators from across the country to attend the event, which helps to build awareness of the integration industry.

At the state level, the State Captain program is looking for volunteers to serve as a point of contact for individual states. Another opportunity to get involved is by attending monthly meetings of the CEDIA Government Affairs Committee to stay informed. “You will absolutely make a difference,” said Friedman.

been the driving force behind the program’s structure,” continues Paul. “She drew on her deep industry experience to identify what’s most relevant for today’s integrators. Her work has completely transformed our approach, and her clarity brought a fresh vision to life, and it’s now shaping how we’ll build future events.”

Elevating Projects with Lighting

“Lighting is fun!” enthused Ryan Donaher, owner at Apex Technologies, during the “Creative Lighting Design: Practical Steps to Kickstart Your Design Journey” panel session at the 2025 CEDIA Education Conference. The panelists provided expert insights on key factors and industry trends that integrators and designers could implement to bring a more intentional, artistic approach to their projects.

Donaher was joined by Patrick Laidlaw, director of business development-integration, WAC Group; Jennifer Kirkpatrick, director of sales, Proluxe by American Lighting; Jenn Mallet, CEO at Level Up Your Home, with industry and media veteran Tony Monteleone, founder and president of Monteleone Consulting, moderating.

A powerful design element that shapes mood, highlights architecture, and transforms spaces, lighting is key to creating meaningful experiences but is often the last thought in many projects. What can integrators do to get lighting front and center in their projects?

Understanding what is most important to your clients will give you an edge on how to light a

space and what fixture options to offer your clients. “You’ve got to take control and step into the space,” Mallet encouraged session attendees.

Emerging lighting trends identified included new opportunities in the media and home lighting space. For example, integrators can set up lighting features that coordinate with their client’s favorite team scoring, or mood lighting that corresponds with shows or other events. Other trends include Pixel and motion lighting, the rise in permanent holiday lighting fixtures and programming, and an increase in security features that are helping keep homes better lit and interactive when security events occur.

The panelists also shared their top tips for integrators and designers looking to incorporate more lighting into their projects. “If you want to be serious about selling lighting and elevating your business,

Competition is Fierce and Fun at CEDIA Pickleball Meetup

On Tuesday, more than 60 CEDIA professionals from around the globe—including dealers, manufacturers, installers, public relations, media, and CEDIA employees—got together at 3rd Shot Pickleball in Wheat Ridge (about 15 minutes from downtown Denver) for this year’s second annual industry pickleball meetup.

I was the event organizer, and this year we rented out the entire club of 13 courts, which allowed us to accommodate more players and spectators. The event raised enough money to donate more than $4,000 to help the CEDIA Foundation provide scholarships and grants to fund education, certification, and career development in the industry.

Players were divided into three skill groups (advanced, intermediate, and beginner) and competed in a round robin format across eight matches with different partners and opponents for each game, giving the maximum opportunity to mix it up with a large group of industry peers.

Last year’s winner, Gordon van Zuiden of Daisy Co., was unable to defend his advanced title due to injury, which opened up the opportunity for a new champion. Congratulations to Andrea Rokicsak, founder and CEO of Gumbuni, who took gold in the advanced group. Chase Bouchard of Crestron took silver, while JD Falslev of TruAudio grabbed bronze.

Brian Smith of Hunter Douglas won the interme-

diate bracket, with Ryan Lindstedt of Origin Acoustics taking second and Tommy Brand of Phantom Sound grabbing third. In the beginner bracket, Soren Winther of L-Acoustics won gold, while Paige Jones of Level Up Automation earned silver and Stephen Paul Goodhue of Liquid Automation took bronze.

Coastal Source Launches Ovation

IC

Outdoor Speaker

BOOTH 1918 Ovation by Coastal Source redefines what an in-ceiling outdoor speaker can be, delivering powerful, full-range sound in a discreet, weatherproof design. Engineered for performance first, Ovation transforms patios, cabanas, and breezeways into immersive listening spaces without compromising architectural aesthetics.

Unlike typical in-ceiling speakers built for speed over sound, Ovation features a patented elliptical design that allows a driver nearly twice the size of a standard 6-inch speaker to fit through a grille 15% smaller. The result: bigger, richer sound with less visual impact. A circular ribbon tweeter ensures silky highs and uniform dispersion, creating a wide, natural soundstage that often inspires the first reaction: “Where’s the sub?”

Built to defy the elements, Ovation pairs corrosion-resistant aluminum grilles with UVstable, weatherproof materials that thrive in salt, sun, snow, and heat where ordinary speakers fail.

Sony Teases Game-Changing Next Generation Display Technology

Fresh off its BRAVIA 8 II (K65XR80M2) QD-OLED being crowned “King of TV” at this year’s Value Electronics’ TV Shootout — Sony’s seventh consecutive King of TV title — the company is already looking ahead to its next-generation flagship display.

This all-new display panel architecture will feature independent RGB LED backlighting, which isn’t just an evolution of Mini LED technology, but rather a fundamental shift in how TVs deliver light, color, and contrast.

According to Sony’s Technology Manager, JT Austin, the new RGB LED backlighting is the culmination of over two decades’ worth of work and research that began with the implementation of local dimming, dating back to the original Sony Qualia fullarray RGB LED backlit display released 20 years ago. Sony further evolved this technology by implementing its Backlight Master Drive technology in 2016; however, the resulting picture quality improvement from these new displays is so profound, Austin compared it to seeing 4K for the first time.

The new RGB LED backlighting further advances the backlighting control Sony introduced recently in its BRAVIA 9 series, allowing each RGB color to light independently, resulting in high color purity and images with a vibrant, wide color gamut.

While the BRAVIA 9 features 22-bit dimming, the new technology is equipped with Sony’s proprietary advanced backlight control technology, designed to maximize the panel’s advanced characteristics, with a total of 96 bits of processing dedicated to scene-adaptive control. This enables faithful reproduction of delicate hues and subtle gradations of light across every corner of the display, more accurately delivering the content creator’s intent. By individually controlling the brightness of the densely packed RGB LEDs, bright areas and specular highlights won’t be clipped, and will adjust the nuances in dark areas without crushing blacks.

Additionally, with a full array of RGB LEDs instead of the current white or blue LEDs with color filters, the display will deliver dramatic increases in color volume and brightness, covering over 99% of the DCI-P3 color space and approximately 90% of the BT.2020. Austin said this new tech delivers

unprecedented brightness and will be the brightest display Sony has ever released, with the ability to achieve peak brightness levels over 4000 nits, matching the performance of Sony’s BVM reference studio grading monitor. Further, it will be able to reproduce subtle color differences and accurate colors without color shifts.

The new displays will leverage all the advantages of Mini LED in terms of brightness, while also eliminating many of the challenges. Specifically, the new display will dramatically reduce visible blooming, increase contrast, produce better black levels, and greatly improve off-axis viewing. It will also unlock significantly larger screen sizes. Sony wasn’t specific on just how large, but, according to Austin, “It opens the opportunity to expand screen sizes beyond what’s possible with OLED.”

Speaking of OLED, this is not meant as an “OLED killer,” but rather a best-of-bothworlds technology that delivers superior black levels and blooming control than Mini-LED, along with higher brightness and color volume than OLED technology, allowing it to better fill installations where larger and brighter screen sizes are required, and when no-compromise performance is demanded in bright or open concept rooms. Further, its wider

viewing angles make it ideal for large spaces, while still producing reference-level color accuracy that matches the professional reference monitors used by Hollywood studios and colorists.

“The Custom Integration Channel is always at the forefront of performance and innovation,” said Kathleen Thomas, Sony’s Head of Custom Install Channel. “Their customers want the best, and what Sony brings to the table with our unique RGB implementation is a revolution in picture performance. This is the culmination of years of development and technological innovations.”

Driving this next-gen picture will be the latest iteration of Sony’s acclaimed XR processor, optimized for the new RGB LED panel and utilizing AI to cross-analyze hundreds of thousands of picture elements at once to optimize color, clarity, contrast, motion, focal point, and depth.

While the recent “King of TVs” win proves that Sony continues to lead in OLED performance today, the next era of large-screen, high-brightness, coloraccurate TVs is already on the horizon with Sony’s RGB backlight technology.

Unfortunately, you won’t be able to experience it on the CEDIA show floor this year. According to Thomas, “We look forward to 2026 being the year of RGB”, with a launch expected in Spring, so you’ll need to stay tuned. However, staff at Sony’s booth are aware of the new displays and are able to discuss them, so feel free to bring your questions as you look at this year’s top technologies!

Residential Lighting Best Practices Guide 2025

Produced by in Cooperation with

The Light Lady’s Guide to Lighting Design

Every space tells a story, and lighting plays a central role in shaping how that story is experienced. At the heart of exceptional residential lighting design is the intelligent application of layered illumination. It’s not about just filling a space with light — it’s about crafting an environment that responds to how people live, relax, gather, entertain, work, and learn. Getting it right starts at the beginning with Layers of Light: Ambient, Task, Accent, and Decorative. By strategically combining and independently controlling these layers, integrators can create lighting environments that are both visually dynamic and functionally adaptable.

Specify the Right Color Temperatures

The selection of appropriate Correlated Color Temperatures (CCTs) is crucial for creating specific moods and optimizing visual comfort in different areas. Understanding of Correlated Color Temperature (CCT) is essential for you because CCT directly shapes how a space feels, as well as how finishes, materials, and furnishings are perceived. When working alongside Interior designers and architects, lighting choices are not just technical; they are aesthetic and emotional decisions.

• 2700K–3000K: This range emits a warm, inviting glow, ideal for creating cozy and relaxing atmospheres in private spaces such as bedrooms, living

rooms, and dining areas. It promotes a sense of calm and comfort.

• 3500K: Offering a more neutral and balanced light, 3500K is conducive to productivity and clarity. It’s well-suited for kitchens, home offices, and general workspaces where sustained focus is required.

[Pro Tip: Exercise caution with color shifting 3500K +, which tends to dim with a grey hue, skewing white color. It is always best to know background colors if selecting a static Kelvin temperature.]

• 4000K+: Providing a cooler, more crisp light, this range is best for utilitarian spaces like garages, utility rooms, and workshops where maximum clarity and visibility are paramount. [Pro Tip: Exercise caution when mixing 2700K (warm) into a 4000K (very cool)-lit space. The contrast is so shocking that I have seen people squint in the space.]

• Warm Dim: Warm Dim LEDs replicate incandescent bulbs by shifting color temperature as they dim, from a cool 6000K to a warm 1800K. Natural, inviting, and energy-efficient, this lighting is ideal for homes and hospitality. [Pro Tip: Exercise caution with warm dim lighting; lumen levels drop significantly with color changes. Verify that the “orange/pumpkin color hue” is acceptable to avoid undesirable effects.]

• Tunable White: Tunable White lighting systems allow users to adjust both intensity and color temperature (CCT) independently, typically

Flowing Luminous Ropes of Illumination Trapeze Cascade

• 360° Seamless Illumination, Zero Pixelation – A continuous, rope like form emits uniform ambient glow across its full circumference, creating an elegant, uninterrupted visual statement.

• Unrivaled Color Precision & Versatility – Featuring our proprietary TruColor™ RGBTW technology, Trapeze 360 delivers over 80,000 true-to-life white tones (1500K to 6500K) and a palette of 16 million dynamic colors for unmatched creative flexibility at 463 lumens per foot.

• Advanced Control Options – TruColor™ RGBTW and Tunable White versions integrate with modern control systems, including Control4, Crestron, DMX, Elan, Josh, Lutron, RTI, Savant, Vantage and others, offering creative flexibility for integrators.

within a range of 2700K to 6500K. [Pro Tip: Exercise caution here, too. Tunable White technology offers unprecedented control over the feel and function of space, but that flexibility comes with a serious responsibility: ensuring visual and experiential consistency across rooms.]

Dim Everything—Intelligently

Modern lighting design demands dimming, not as a luxury, but as a core feature. Integrators must select appropriate protocols like phase-cut or 0-10V, ensuring smooth, flicker-free operation. This requires careful matching of LED drivers, dimmers, and control systems.

Ensuring absolute compatibility between the chosen driver and dimmer is paramount to prevent performance issues, premature fixture failure, or undesirable results. [Pro Tip: Exercise caution — manufacturer data is a starting point, not a guarantee! Many reputable manufacturers publish compatibility charts and test results, and these resources are invaluable. But lab conditions are not your project conditions. Voltage variation, environmental factors, control system complexity, and even fixture placement can impact real-world performance. A component that works “on paper” may behave differently in your space, with your loads, and your wiring conditions.]

Eliminate Glare with Better Optics and Controls

Visual discomfort, diminished visibility, and ocular strain are direct consequences of glare, whether direct or indirect. Proactive spatial planning is recommended to mitigate these effects.

• Beam Spread and Shielding Data: Analyze fixture specifications, like beam spread and shielding, to select fixtures that minimize glare using deep-set optics, baffles, and diffusers.

• Smart Programming: Beyond fixture selection, intelligent control programming is crucial. This means providing granular control over

light levels, allowing occupants to adjust illumination to their personal comfort and task requirements.

Create Architectural Impact with Accents

Accent lighting is far more than just aesthetic enhancement; it’s a powerful tool for creating high-end, immersive experiences and adding dramatic impact to a space. Integrators can leverage accent lighting to:

• Highlight Features: Draw attention to architectural details, artwork, sculptures, or decorative elements.

• Enhance Ambiance: Create mood and depth within a room, transforming a space from merely functional to visually captivating.

• Custom Keypad Scenes and App Interfaces: Offer users intuitive control of accent lighting (art lights, toe kicks, wall grazers, niche lighting) via custom keypad scenes (e.g., “Art Mode,” “Entertain”) or accessible app interfaces for high impact. n

BOOTH #C1320 At CEDIA Expo, DMF Lighting has introduced Artafex Linear with PhaseX, the latest evolution of its linear lighting system. This new solution combines the sleek, modular design of Artafex Linear with the advanced digital capabilities of Artafex PhaseX technology, delivering a unified platform for tunable white lighting, ultra-smooth 0.5% dimming, and simplified integration.

A single PhaseX gateway can now control both recessed and linear fixtures seamlessly. Artafex Linear with PhaseX enables full tunability over a standard two-wire home run. This breakthrough eliminates the need for additional wiring, simplifying installation and making it possible to retrofit existing two-wire static white tape light installations with a fully tunable, digital solution. By transforming legacy wiring into a platform for dynamic, addressable lighting, DMF opens the door for integrators to deliver advanced lighting experiences in both new construction and retrofit applications — without the disruption or cost of pulling new home runs. Your Starting Lineup

Picking Your Lighting Vendors

For a guy that hasn’t been to a sporting event in years, I was surprised to find myself using a sports theme for this article about lighting vendor selection. So, for those of you into basketball, I apologize in advance for any inaccuracies. And for those of you that are not into sports, bear with me a bit. This is, after all, really about lighting business strategy.

There are few thrills like sitting right behind the home basket at a Big 10 basketball game, and during my undergraduate years at the University of Illinois, I felt the rush many times. My girlfriend and I took advantage of cheap season tickets for students and, by the time we were seniors, got the best seats in the house. We could hear every word spoken by the players, saw every emotion on the coach’s face, and had to duck flying balls more than once. When we were up by two points with 30 seconds to go, the noise was incredible.

It was a lot less fun when we were ten points behind, and if it was a losing

year we would sit around, armchair critics at our worst, and wonder why our highly paid coaches could not put together a winning team.

If you feel like you are losing the lighting game more often than winning, or if you are just getting started, you can benefit from a good hard look at your recruiting strategy. Your team of vendors is just that — your team — and your success in this season will depend not just on your coaching ability, er, sales ability, but also on your lineup.

“Choosing vendors is easy, I just want the best in class.” That’s great, but let’s be honest: no basketball team will be successful if it is made up of the eight best centers in the country. You need point guards, forwards, passing guards…and a deep bench in each category if you want to play against all kinds of teams and win. Similarly, there are some “big names” in the lighting category right now, like DMF and Lutron, and both are great players but cannot play all the positions. So how do you pick a winning lineup? Check their stats, evaluate their sportsmanship, and consider your conference competition.

FEBRUARY 16 - 19 | AUSTIN, TEXAS

Lightapalooza is the custom integration industry’s premier destination for lighting mastery—an independent, expertly curated gathering where integrators, designers, manufacturers, and reps unite to learn, evolve, and lead.

Here, education is the heartbeat. Our product-agnostic training empowers you to own the lighting conversation, deliver extraordinary client results, and elevate your business.

As the trusted authority in residential lighting education, Lightapalooza is the movement redefining the future of the CI channel.

Certification not only means that I have learned the material, but also gives me more confidence in speaking with clients and colleagues.

The Stats: Product

Numbers are the easy part, but you have to know how to read the numbers if you want to make a smart call. Stop by any booth at a tradeshow or conference and you will hear passionate vendors tell you why their product is better than the next one. This is great, but you need to sit down and spend a few minutes really digging into comparison of one product lineup over the next. If one has a CRI of 97 and the other 96, does it make much of a difference? What if the lower CRI product has a larger tilt radius? Not even sure what I am talking about? Then you may need a little professional help to sort it out. It can get tricky, fast, so don’t feel like you have to go it alone.

Sportsmanship: Service

They don’t always make the headlines, but some of the best recruits in sports are those that are kind, encouraging, and supportive of the entire team. In lighting, you need vendor partners that will support and encourage you, not just make continuous demands. Services can vary, but I often find myself preferencing the brands that pick up my phone calls, help me out of a jamb, and, let’s face it, are just plain pleasant people to be around. You might have great product, but if every conversation leaves me a little miffed, you will be low on my list.

Conference: Competition

Why do we put together teams, whether in sports or in business? To win. And to win, we need to know who we are up against. Let’s take an imaginary brand X. They have the stats, very solid product, and their team is always responsive when you call. But they also sell to the distributor down the street and online. Keep looking. Or perhaps you find a great brand with great product and a fantastic team, but their fixtures cost twice what is being sold in your market. Maybe they are great as a starter, but you’ll need someone on the bench you can bring in when price becomes an issue.

Let me wrap up with a little bit of practical advice: recruit a balanced team. We find that most companies do one or two things well, but not everything. Lutron’s new Rania is great, but they don’t make a step light. AiSPIRE’s Ventrix is sweet, but they don’t make a bendable linear grazer. Proluxe has a solid RGBTW linear product, but you’ll need to look elsewhere for an in-grade, wet-listed uplight. I usually want between around five vendors for a good product mix on any given project. Hmm…five players for a starting lineup? That rings a bell.

Okay, go get ‘em, coach. (Sorry, I couldn’t resist). n

Looking Forward to Lightapalooza 2026

For integrators who’ve embraced lighting design and fixture specification — or those just beginning to explore the opportunity — Lightapalooza 2026, taking place February 16–19 in Austin, TX, represents more than a conference. It’s a movement.

Born out of the need for structured lighting education in the custom installation space, Lightapalooza is the first dedicated event built from the ground up for integrators seeking to lead in lighting. It provides a learning-first environment that empowers attendees to elevate both their knowledge and their business model.

What makes it unique? Education is the main attraction. From hands-on sessions to high-level design theory, the event’s curriculum is agnostic, deep, and immediately applicable. There are dedicated tracks for business owners, designers, and project managers — ensuring every role in your company leaves with tools to improve outcomes.

This isn’t theory without application. Many sessions are led by working professionals, including elite integrators, design collaborators, IES experts, and fixture manufacturers. The result is a pragmatic, forward-thinking perspective you won’t find anywhere else.

Lightapalooza has become known for its community atmosphere. Attendees routinely cite the energy, the collaboration, and the willingness to share as reasons they keep returning.

With the expansion of the SHINE certification program, new training partnerships, and a brand strategy that places education at the center, Lightapalooza 2026 is not just an event — it’s an investment in professional evolution.

Who Should Attend Lightapalooza?

• Integrators entering the lighting category who want a trusted place to start.

• Established firms who are offering fixtures and design services and want to elevate their professionalism and credibility.

• Project managers and field leaders who are looking to reduce risk and deliver more consistent outcomes.

• Design-minded team members wanting to strengthen their ability to collaborate with architects and interior designers.

• Business owners who are looking to turn lighting into a sustainable, scalable revenue stream.
