Integrators Can Build Business through Collaboration
By Nina Snyder
Collaboration is crucial for integrators to build their business, said Chip Wade, a keynote speaker at CEDIA Expo/CIX 2025 in Denver. Wade shared his journey from HGTV host to business owner on Thursday morning in “Beyond the Blueprint: Where Innovation Meets Intention.”
An Atlanta native, Wade earned a degree in mechanical engineering from Georgia Tech, but his career path hasn’t followed the traditional blueprint for success. He took a detour into the media industry when he auditioned for HGTV.
Wade appeared on Designed to Sell in 2007, marking his first foray into the home improvement arena. He also hosted Elbow Room on HGTV for four seasons, from 2012-2015. ‘featured innovative solutions for families looking for more space in their current homes.
In 2008, Wade founded Wade Works Creative, an architecture and design, real estate, and production company. While the company only has three employees, Wade has established relationships with other home professionals to complement his expertise.
Wade said integrators should focus on developing relationships with designers, architects, and contractors, who often receive the first call from homeowners about projects. “A lot of my business comes from relationships I’ve built over the years,” Wade said.
While the end consumer might not know what an integrator does, establishing relationships with designers can help integrators start the process before any work is done on home renovations. “By the time the contractors come in, there’s a lot of stuff in

motion,” Wade said.
In his presentation, Wade shared a three-step process to create home installations that exceed expectations for the consumer: Identify challenges and needs, brainstorm and be curious, and create a vision that excites.
He also emphasized that he provides his customers with multiple scenarios that showcase the latest in smart home technology. Customers might not be familiar with all the latest technology; integrators should focus on the experience that the technology provides rather than on detailed specifications.
“We do a lot of upselling, but I call it vision casting,” Wade said. He also underscored the importance of providing 3D renderings to showcase the designs. Wade offered a glimpse of some of his unique projects, which ranged from a sunken art studio to a topographical wall printed on laminate.
While Wade serves as the main point of contact, he encourages integrators to approach installations as a team effort. He also said challenging projects can be frustrating, but they can also offer integrators a chance to shine.

CEDIA Expo/CIX show management joined with exhibitors AiSPIRE/WAC, Crestron, Nice, Sonos, Sony, and URC for Thursday morning’s ribbon-cutting ceremony to open the 2025 Exhibit Hall.

8K Association Presents ‘The Big Picture’ at CEDIA Expo/CIX 2025
By Grant Morgan
4K is currently king in the CI channel, but as the 8K content ecosystem continues to mature, the availability of digital content and games is expected to rapidly grow. The 8K Association (Booth #4501) is at CEDIA Expo/CIX 2025 to inform and educate integrators about the need to see the bigger picture of 8K and all the opportunities related to it.
“Our goal at CEDIA Expo is to showcase how 8K technology provides a more immersive and superrealistic viewing experience and delivers a powerful ‘wow’ factor that goes far beyond the reach of conventional 4K,” says Juan Reyes, executive director, 8K Association. “Additionally, 8K is the first home entertainment platform that combines the best of the latest AI innovations, making it ideal for the CI channel.”
“Survey after survey has shown that home entertainment is still the biggest revenue generator by far in the entire CI channel,” says Marc Finer, founder of Communication Research. “We think the opportunity for 8K is a very exciting opportunity, and we believe these developments may represent a big part of the future of this industry.”
The 8K Association is exploring the roadmap to

8K adoption with expert-led panels on 8K hardware, 8K content, and cable/device integration throughout the show, with two sessions available for Expo attendees on Friday, Sept. 5. The 11 a.m. session discusses the latest games, documentaries, sports, and upscaled 8K content from AMD, The Explorers, 4BY4, and Spin Digital. The 2 p.m. session addresses the current and future 8K capture, cable, and device integration, featuring top executives from AudioQuest, AVPro, and BZBGEAR.

“One of the challenges that we’re hearing from within the organizations is ‘where’s the content,’ and we’re demonstrating some of that here at CEDIA,” adds Reyes. “We’ve got some great content from IMAX, MGM has provided us with a clip from West Side Story, and Warner Bros. has provided us with a clip from 2001. These are all 8K scan content that just looks amazing, so be sure you stop by to take a look at these incredible examples.”
“There are certain things that humans cannot unsee, because when we experience the next new thing, our expectations change forever,” says Jason McGraw, group VP and show director of CEDIA Expo/CIX. “This occurred when 1080p HD essentially replaced 720p, when 4K replaced 1080p, and it’s now happening as 8K emerges as the new threshold for excellence. It’s beginning to have a compelling impact on gaming, sports, entertainment, and commercial applications.”

State of the Industry: Integrators Are Optimistic
By Nina Snyder
After a bumpy start to 2025 due to turbulence from tariffs and political instability, integrators are increasingly optimistic about the industry, according to a Thursday panel at CEDIA Expo/CIX 2025.
“The State of the Industry” brought together CEDIA representatives and industry leaders to discuss the outlook for the rest of the year in an event moderated by Zachary Comeau, editor of CE Pro magazine.
“There’s not a lot of economic headwinds that we’re hearing about right now,” said Patrick McCarthy, executive director of Azione Unlimited, a smart home association in Chester Springs, PA.
Daryl Friedman, global president and CEO of CEDIA, also said the economic outlook has improved in the second half of the year. “It’s been a roller coaster of a year,” he acknowledged, but added that it’s “ending up a lot better.”
The majority of integrators say business is “excellent” or “very good,” according to a sentiment survey conducted by CEDIA. The Professional Smart Home

Sentiment Survey also found that 72% of integrators are planning to hire additional technical staff in the next 12 months.
Experts on the panel echoed the optimism of the survey results. Jim Pearse, president and CEO of Prosource, said the commercial side of the integration industry felt the effects of tariffs through the delayed timing of some projects. “There were an awful lot of projects that maybe the customers paused to commit
Lutron Brings It All Together
By Anthony Savona
BOOTH 1912, ROOM 106, AND DESTINATION OUTDOORS
If you’re wondering what Lutron has been up to since last year’s Expo, the answer, based on this year’s exhibit, is listening to dealers. Examples of this directive are seen throughout the booth, but perhaps nowhere as cleanly as the “Wall of Lighting Families.”
“At Expo, we’re formalizing Lutron’s intelligent lighting families,” says Lutron VP Ben Bard. “We’re formalizing the fact that Ketra, Rania, and Lumaris are full families of lighting at three different price points for the luxury market—all provide intelligent lighting with dynamic and wireless control.”
According to Bard, dealers often express how difficult it is to execute jobs across brands because color temperatures may vary. “Lutron has created a native experience that has taken that complexity head-on and made sure that these products all work together in the best way possible so that you can use and interchange them to meet the price that you need,” he explains.
In addition to formalizing the product lines, Lutron has also made strategic additions to them, including new Ketra and Rania D2 Remodeler downlights, as well as new Rania lamps and longrun Rania Natural White tape light.
Dealers aren’t the only ones with a wish list for Lutron—and interior designers and architects have also been heard. “One of the key learnings we’ve had with shades is that having price points to match colors and fabrics throughout the house is important,” Bard says. “If a designer picks fabrics, they don’t want to pick other fabrics in different spaces. So, having the Triathlon Select shade in coordinating bracket colors and in the full family of Lutron fabrics allows designers and dealers to hit the right price point for clients.”
The company has also been busy on the software front. For starters, its app now features Lighting Designer Mode, which gives dealers and designers precise control over every light in the house. The Lutron Luxury Experience app also has a new Shade Visualizer, a high-fidelity design helper for shades.
to, and now they’re beginning to come through,” Pearse said.
In contrast, the residential side of the integration industry experienced a rush to buy products before tariffs went into effect. “We saw kind of an uptick in the second quarter where people were frontloading projects due to the tariffs,” said Chris Whitley, executive director of the Ellipsys Commercial Technology Group based in Scottsdale, AZ.
While business continues to be strong for integrators, panelists recommended keeping an eye on interest rates and the larger market for home builders.
“Having interest rates come down will certainly spur homebuilding,” said Hank Alexander, director of Oasys Residential Technology Group. Lower interest rates could also inspire homeowners to move to larger houses and upgrade their technology, he added.
The next trend on the horizon is AI technology, and McCarthy recommended that integrators get ahead of the curve. “Your clients are going to start asking about AI,” he said. Pearse also advised attendees to “look hard at how AI is deployed through these products.”

And while all that is great news for dealers and designers, it isn’t even the biggest launch for Lutron here at Expo. That title belongs to the company’s new Native by Design Partner Program. Some of the launch partners include Coastal Source, Cerno, Leon, Niche Modern, and Hartmann & Forbes.
“There are lots of applications—such as outdoor lighting, specialty lighting, and framing projectors—where Lutron doesn’t provide a solution, but our customers need one,” says Bard. “The Native by Design program natively integrates Lutron technology into best-in-class products from leading luxury brands.”
“State of the Industry” panelists expect a better second half of the year for integrators.

CEDIA, NKBA Release Findings from Joint Research
By Grant Morgan
At the 2025 CEDIA Town Hall meeting, held on Tuesday, Sept. 3, Daryl Friedman, global president and CEO of CEDIA, and Bill Darcy, global president and CEO of NKBA | KBIS, discussed the results of new, exclusive joint research between CEDIA and NKBA | KBIS about the evolving collaboration between the smart home and design and build communities.
Tricia Zach, director of research, NKBA, presented key findings of the U.S.-based research study examining the current state of technology integration in home design to the Town Hall attendees. She also highlighted how integrators can capitalize on the growing need for integrated tech in the design community, particularly in the whole home market.
According to 75% of respondents, homeowners are currently the driving force for smart home integration, illustrating a client-driven demand for increased partnership. Looking ahead, 61% of respondents indicated that integrated technology is a “must-have” feature of the future, echoing the need for collaboration to be a priority upfront.
“The future of tech integration is bright,” said Zach. “Right now, 36% of the NKBA audience sees

Tricia Zach, director of research, NKBA
integrated tech as a must-have. But looking ahead, that number jumps to 57% in just a few years. This growing expectation that integrated smart tech is going to play a significantly larger role in kitchen,
bath, and whole home design is a really strong signal about where the market is headed.”
“You’re in the most rapidly evolving space, which makes your job more challenging,“ Darcy told attendees. “People aren’t looking for gimmicks. They want practical solutions that make everyday living easier, more efficient, and more connected.”
Other findings Zach presented include the use of scalable tech by designers when cost is a major factor, and how integrators can use earlier project collaboration to their advantage to help build repeat customer relationships.
While demand and expectation for smart home integrated tech are rising, the research showed an old foe still plagues CEDIA and custom integrators.
“The good news—and the bad news—is that this research is showing that the awareness level is the barrier,” said Friedman. “Once your clients and homeowners know what this [integration] is, and what it can do, and what technology can do for their homes, they want it and they want access to it. By increasing awareness, we’ll break that barrier.”
The full report is available at NKBA.org and CEDIA.org, with free access for NKBA members and CEDIA members.

‘Heritage’ and ‘Partnership’ Provide Core Themes for Sony
Kathleen Thomas, head of custom integration sales at Sony Electronics (Booth #2502), offers a look into the thought process behind the company’s CEDIA Expo/CIX 2025 exhibit, as well as the trends that are shaping the custom installation market.
This is your first Expo as the head of the Sony Custom Integration Channel. How has this changed how you approach the show?

supporting their CI business with products and support that make their projects better.
What are Sony’s priorities and goals for Expo?
Kathleen Thomas: I wanted to bring a different vibe to the booth this year. One of the things I love about the CI industry is that, while we all strive to execute at a high level, we are not a stodgy, stuffy industry. It is a place of fun and a lot of camaraderie. I wanted to create a space rooted in celebration and partnership. I want people coming into the booth to feel that Sony is on their side,
KT: We have a core theme of “Heritage” and “Partnership” that permeates every part of the booth, from 60 Years of ES museum to our 7th year winning King of TV with the Bravia 8 II. The new Bravia 7 projector is a product of direct customer feedback—they needed a cost-effective solution for multiple aspect ratios and moderate-sized theaters that didn’t sacrifice picture quality. The CLED theater this year brings together many of our industry friends like Wisdom, Stewart, Leon, Cinematech, DMF, and Crestron to create a real-world media room space.

nology that will be shipping next year. What can integrators expect?
KT: Sony announced our RGB technology a few months ago, but we are perfectionists. This is a product that has been in development for years and is a huge leap in the evolution of TV performance. Sony’s implementation is unique and built on the innovation that blew everyone away in last year’s Bravia 9 backlight demonstration. While we aren’t showing it at the booth, we will be fielding questions about the technology and will have opportunities for dealers to interact with the product very soon.
In terms of trends, which Sony products are most in demand from integrators?
KT: There definitely has been a trend toward bigger and better. We have seen huge growth in our CLED video walls and large screen sizes, as well as premium TVs like the Bravia 9 and Bravia 8 II. We are looking forward to what RGB is going to bring in terms of high-performance large screen sizes.

Trinnov Audio Announces Next-Gen AltitudeCI Processor
By John Sciacca
Calling it not just a new processor but a “new chapter for the industry,” Trinnov Audio (HPA208) unveiled its new AltitudeCI processor, the company’s first new processor in eight years, which is expected to beginning shipping in Q4 of this year.
Arnaud Destinay, Trinnov Audio’s sales director, stressed that the AltitudeCI is not a replacement for the current Altitude product lineup, but rather meant as a complement. Performance-wise, it will perform identically to existing models, but the AltitudeCI is designed for next-generation applications with the ability to natively support Dante and Ravenna/ AES67 AoIP technology.
Designed to bring Trinnov performance to more systems and budgets, the new AltitudeCI has a starting price of $11,000 for a base 7.1-channel system. However, the system employs a scalable licensing model and is fully upgradeable to 64 channels for a full DCI/Atmos pro integration, allowing clients to only pay for what they need.
Owners will be able to upgrade through their dealer to “unlock” more channels through software to meet their needs. Upgrades are available in twochannel increments at $1,250, making a 16-channel version capable of 9.1.6 retail for $16,000, with a 32-channel system retailing for $26,000.
Trinnov Audio has long held a “no new box for new features” promise to existing customers, with a 10-year history of delivering new performance features at no additional cost to existing Altitude owners. Some of these upgrades include support for DTS:X Pro, adding four additional channels for Altitude16 and 32 owners, and the breakthrough WaveForming

bass-management processing released recently.
The AltitudeCI is unique in that it allows for flexible, hybrid connections to amplifiers, simultaneously supporting all its output connections, including eight analog audio, 32 AES/EBU digital, and 32 Dante/ AES67.
To simplify network connections, the AltitudeCI has three Ethernet connections, allowing one connection to the local network for control, with two other traffic-segregated connections for DirectLink connection to AoIP amplifiers. The processor also features four 8K30/4K120 HDMI 2.1 inputs and two outputs, along with a coaxial and Toslink optical digital input.
Along with the AltitudeCI launch, Trinnov is releasing a Dante input card for its existing Amplitude16 amplifiers, allowing a single cable Ethernet connection to the new CI processor. This card will be field-installable on all existing Amplitude 16 amplifiers. Plus, coming to all Altitude processors via a free firmware update is an upgraded user interface designed to simplify installation and create a more consistent experience.

Performance In-Wall Subwoofer & Backbox
The Bass You Crave. The Integration You Demand.

In the pursuit of immersive audio and modern design harmony, today’s listeners expect more than just sound—they expect a truly captivating experience. They want thunderous bass that elevates music, movies, and games without compromising the clean lines of contemporary living. Architectural audio has come a long way, offering discreet, innovative solutions that blend effortlessly into the home. But when it comes to bass—the emotional core of every soundtrack—compromise has long been the standard. Conventional inwall subwoofers often fall short, delivering inconsistent, unpredictable results and underwhelming performance. The walls meant to hide them often limit their potential.
Until now. The Paradigm SFC12-SYS redefines what’s possible, fusing uncompromising lowfrequency performance with elegant, discrete integration. It’s not just about saving space— it’s about elevating sound. No trade-offs. No guesswork. Just the bass you’ve always wanted, precisely engineered and perfectly tuned for the spaces you live in.

Looking for Talent in All the Right Places
By Nina Snyder
Finding and retaining talent in the integration industry starts with raising awareness of career paths, according to experts at a panel discussion, “How to Grow your Talent Pipeline and Expand your Workforce Development Footprint,” at CEDIA Expo/CIX on Wednesday. The importance of training and certifications also proved to be a hot topic of discussion.
Ray Holland, senior engineer with Blacksheep Engineering, said a college degree is not the only path to success in today’s market. “We need to expose

“Students are going to come out of there ready for the workforce in the residential space,” Guertin said. CEDIA is also in the process of working with
Skyworth’s Artistic Expression
By Anthony Savona
For each of the three years that Skyworth USA has exhibited at CEDIA Expo (Booth #1033), its booth has gotten bigger, reflecting not only its position in the custom integration market but also the literal size of its offerings.
“This year’s CEDIA Exhibit is focused on the expansion of our Canvas Art TV products,” says Michael Gleason, director of sales, Skyworth USA. “We’re introducing the world’s first 100-inch Art TV, with the goal of building dealer excitement and driving sales. In addition to the 100-inch, we have new 86-inch and 75-inch models that are on display.”
Skyworth is introducing its Canvas Elite line of Art TVs, which offers a higher picture quality than the other Canvas models. The Canvas Elite line features Skyworth’s OmniView Matte Screen technology, which is a three-layer screen that delivers OLED-level performance from MiniLED displays. Spec-wise, these models feature a 4K UHD QD-MiniLED panel with more than 1,000 local
dimming zones, 2,000 nits of peak brightness, and a 144 Hz refresh rate.
“Last year, I traveled around the country and listened to dealers, and they all talked about how they sold a lot in the Art TV category, but they hated the fact that the picture quality wasn’t what they were used to selling in homes,” explains Gleason. “We heard them, and this Canvas Elite line addresses those concerns.”
Houston City College to set up a similar program.
Guertin also encourages CEDIA premium members to take full advantage of their memberships. Some companies don’t realize that CEDIA membership includes training and certification for their employees.
The good news is that integrators are looking to expand their operations as the market continues to grow. “The acceleration of the adoption of technology in homes is growing exponentially,” said David Weinstein, chairperson of the CEDIA Foundation, the nonprofit arm of the organization.

That interaction with dealers and the resulting products is a big part of Skyworth’s strategy, and the company is in the process of forming a dealer council to formally get more of their ideas. “We’re doing all that to get their opinions and make changes based on that,” Gleason adds. “I could think I know everything about the product, but these people are in the trenches dealing with customers every day, and they know a lot more than we do.”
While Skyworth is finding success with Art TVs, they are also displaying their portable monitor, as well as their popular full-sun and partial-sun outdoor televisions.
With the company 100% committed to the custom installation market, Skyworth wants to be known as a resource for dealers. “We have a vast rep network and wholesale all over the country and, in some places, we even work on a direct basis with the dealer,” he says. “We have policies like easy, free freight requirements to the dealer. We are very easy to do business with.”

Attendees were encouraged to consider their clients’ lifestyles when considering the focus of their showroom, as well as showing clients what is possible by meeting them where they are in their purchasing journey. “If you tell the right story with intention, then it [the showroom] will be successful,” added Steele.
“A showroom for a showroom’s sake is not necessarily going to lead to more sales,” Wiersma agreed. “Having a clear story for your client and for your
team about how it is to be used is a big piece. The showroom experience is about building trust and building relationships.”
“If you’re going to do a showroom, it’s going to cost some dough,” quipped Chorney. “But quality is not defined by square footage, and it’s not defined by dollars. The mistake that’s been made in the past is too much focus on brands and less focus on explaining who you are, what your brand stands for.”
The panelists also said a showroom can be used to soothe designers who may be nervous about how the technology will change their vision. Plus, attendees were encouraged to keep bringing value back to the table and look for ways to use the spaces they have by showing the processes for installation and final look.

Just Add Power’s MC-QX MaxColor 4K60 Tiling and Warping Encoder
Sony Teases Game-Changing Next Generation Display Technology
Fresh off its BRAVIA 8 II (K65XR80M2) QD-OLED being crowned “King of TV” at this year’s Value Electronics’ TV Shootout — Sony’s seventh consecutive King of TV title — the company is already looking ahead to its next-generation flagship display.
This all-new display panel architecture will feature independent RGB LED backlighting, which isn’t just an evolution of Mini LED technology, but rather a fundamental shift in how TVs deliver light, color, and contrast.
According to Sony’s Technology Manager, JT Austin, the new RGB LED backlighting is the culmination of over two decades’ worth of work and research that began with the implementation of local dimming, dating back to the original Sony Qualia fullarray RGB LED backlit display released 20 years ago. Sony further evolved this technology by implementing its Backlight Master Drive technology in 2016; however, the resulting picture quality improvement from these new displays is so profound, Austin compared it to seeing 4K for the first time.
The new RGB LED backlighting further advances the backlighting control Sony introduced recently in its BRAVIA 9 series, allowing each RGB color to light independently, resulting in high color purity and images with a vibrant, wide color gamut.
While the BRAVIA 9 features 22-bit dimming, the new technology is equipped with Sony’s proprietary advanced backlight control technology, designed to maximize the panel’s advanced characteristics, with a total of 96 bits of processing dedicated to scene-adaptive control. This enables faithful reproduction of delicate hues and subtle gradations of light across every corner of the display, more accurately delivering the content creator’s intent. By individually controlling the brightness of the densely packed RGB LEDs, bright areas and specular highlights won’t be clipped, and will adjust the nuances in dark areas without crushing blacks.
Additionally, with a full array of RGB LEDs instead of the current white or blue LEDs with color filters, the display will deliver dramatic increases in color volume and brightness, covering over 99% of the DCI-P3 color space and approximately 90% of the BT.2020. Austin said this new tech delivers

unprecedented brightness and will be the brightest display Sony has ever released, with the ability to achieve peak brightness levels over 4000 nits, matching the performance of Sony’s BVM reference studio grading monitor. Further, it will be able to reproduce subtle color differences and accurate colors without color shifts.
The new displays will leverage all the advantages of Mini LED in terms of brightness, while also eliminating many of the challenges. Specifically, the new display will dramatically reduce visible blooming, increase contrast, produce better black levels, and greatly improve off-axis viewing. It will also unlock significantly larger screen sizes. Sony wasn’t specific on just how large, but, according to Austin, “It opens the opportunity to expand screen sizes beyond what’s possible with OLED.”

Speaking of OLED, this is not meant as an “OLED killer,” but rather a best-of-bothworlds technology that delivers superior black levels and blooming control than Mini-LED, along with higher brightness and color volume than OLED technology, allowing it to better fill installations where larger and brighter screen sizes are required, and when no-compromise performance is demanded in bright or open concept rooms. Further, its wider

viewing angles make it ideal for large spaces, while still producing reference-level color accuracy that matches the professional reference monitors used by Hollywood studios and colorists.
“The Custom Integration Channel is always at the forefront of performance and innovation,” said Kathleen Thomas, Sony’s Head of Custom Install Channel. “Their customers want the best, and what Sony brings to the table with our unique RGB implementation is a revolution in picture performance. This is the culmination of years of development and technological innovations.”
Driving this next-gen picture will be the latest iteration of Sony’s acclaimed XR processor, optimized for the new RGB LED panel and utilizing AI to cross-analyze hundreds of thousands of picture elements at once to optimize color, clarity, contrast, motion, focal point, and depth.
While the recent “King of TVs” win proves that Sony continues to lead in OLED performance today, the next era of large-screen, high-brightness, coloraccurate TVs is already on the horizon with Sony’s RGB backlight technology.
Unfortunately, you won’t be able to experience it on the CEDIA show floor this year. According to Thomas, “We look forward to 2026 being the year of RGB”, with a launch expected in Spring, so you’ll need to stay tuned. However, staff at Sony’s booth are aware of the new displays and are able to discuss them, so feel free to bring your questions as you look at this year’s top technologies!
