Level 3 Module 1

Lesson 3 Extension | Earth Changes

Working in groups, students observe layers and compare different components of soil.

PREPARATION

For the soil column, provide students with a large clean jar with a tight-fitting lid, soil, water, dish

soap, and a teaspoon. Provide each group with samples of sand, silt, and clay for students to compare with the components in the soil column.

Distribute and read aloud the following procedure sheet to students.

Observe Soil

1. Add soil to the jar until the jar is half full. Break up any large clumps.

2. Add water to the jar until the jar is full.

3. Add 1 teaspoon of dish soap to the jar.

4. Use the lid to close the jar tightly.

5. Shake the jar to mix the soil and water.

6. Set down the jar, and then observe it for 1 minute.

7. Draw what you observe after 1 minute.

8. Observe the jar again 1 day later. Draw what you observe.

9. Compare the samples of sand, silt, and clay with the components in the soil column. Describe what you notice.

10. Compare your observations of the jar after 1 minute and after 1 day. Describe any changes you noticed.

11. Share your findings with the class.

Lesson 8 Extension | Earth Changes

Working individually or in groups, students use stickers to mark locations on an inflatable globe where water and land interact on Earth.

PREPARATION

Provide students with stickers and an inflatable globe.

Distribute and read aloud the following procedure sheet to students.

Identify Water and Land Interactions

1. Think about places where you have seen water and land interact.

2. Find places on the inflatable globe where water and land interact.

3. Place a sticker on the inflatable globe at each place where water and land interact.

4. Share and compare your findings with another group.

1. Read the list of materials in the chart. Research which natural resources are used to make each material.

2. Record your findings on the chart.

Working individually or in groups, students choose an unanswered question or related phenomenon from the module to research or investigate. Students then present their findings to the class.

PREPARATION

Prepare a list of unanswered questions and related phenomena from the module

driving question board. As necessary, curate resources for student research or provide materials for teacher-approved investigations. Consider allowing students to bring materials from home. Prepare to review safety measures with students as necessary.

1. Choose an unanswered question or phenomenon.

2. Research the topic.

3. Prepare a presentation that answers the question or explains the phenomenon.

4. Present your findings to the class.

1. Choose an unanswered question or phenomenon.

2. Design an investigation to answer the question or explore the phenomenon. Your teacher must approve the investigation.

3. Carry out your investigation. Follow all safety measures your teacher reviews with you.

Lesson 3 Extension | Changes in Matter

Working in pairs or groups, students explore how objects or materials change during heating.

PREPARATION

Provide students with safety goggles, heat-resistant gloves, a heat source (e.g., hair dryer, heat lamp, microwave), and containers and objects or materials that can be safely heated

(e.g., butter, chocolate chips). This investigation poses potential hazards. Review safety measures with students, including wearing safety goggles and heat-resistant gloves throughout the activity and handling the heated objects or materials with care. Supervise student investigations.

1. Choose one object or material from the list provided by your teacher. Record the object or material you chose:
