BEST OF 2022

The Tech & Learning Awards of Excellence: Best of 2022 celebrate educational technology from the last 12 months that has excelled in supporting teachers, students, and education professionals in the classroom, for professional development, or general management of education resources and learning. Nominated products are divided into three categories: Primary, Secondary, or Higher Education.
Tech & Learning’s panel of expert judges scored each nominated product on ease of use, value, versatility, and utility. Those products that score
highly across the criteria were named winners.
“This year’s nominated products reflect some of the trends we’re seeing in education: a greater focus on wellness, new features added to products to create flexibility for a variety of learning environments, new ways to assess student mastery and personalize learning, and a focus on providing equitable access to technology for all students,” says Christine Weiser, content director for Tech & Learning. “Our judges were impressed with the breadth of these new products and the industry’s willingness to embrace innovation to support all students. Congratulations to the winners!”

SURVEY QUESTION:
Other than ChatGPT and AI writing tools, what do you think will be the biggest edtech trend in the next year? Answer here
Each and every year since 2012, I set out to challenge myself and my readers to a set of bold predictions around the edtech space. Yes, I usually sprinkle in some pop culture and politics (Oprah running for president in 2020 didn’t happen–maybe The Rock in 2028?). But mostly these center around innovation in and around the classroom learning space.

In reflecting on this past year and previous years, there are times when my predictions hit the mark, such as when I guessed that Texas would give up its Pearson testing contract. Others took time, like when I predicted in 2013 that a device other than iPads would rule the classroom (hello Chromebooks!). Mixed in with the successes are some failures of course, such as when I predicted self-driving school buses in 2016 (still a chance!).
This year, it’s a mixed bag. Many of these are on the verge of reality while others may never happen. So without further ado, I present to you my 2023 bold predictions.
A Look Ahead with Carl HookerWith the release of open source tools like ChatGPT, it’s finally at the classroom doorstep. This coming year will be extremely vital to the future of AI in schools. Will we ban it or embrace it?
Much like when schools started rolling out their device programs, I can see a future where there are VR mobile labs that teachers can use to immerse students in a certain environment.
• Elon Musk tries to become James Halliday
Elon will go full on Ready Player One and create an Oasis for education, a place where kids from anywhere in the world can connect and learn via some sort of VR mechanism.
• Remote teaching fills in the gaps
Rather than trying to find a teacher to teach a single course, such

as computer science, schools in the future will outsource courses to remote educators.
• The “shopping mall” school is launched
For the full article with the reasoning behind these predictions, visit k12leaders.com.
During the Tech & Learning Innovative Leadership Summit in December, one team of innovative educators came up with the idea that with big box stores going out of business in recent years, former shopping malls could be used as educational space.
• Cybersecurity becomes cool again
Putting multiple cybersecurity tools under the same roof makes more and more sense for schools trying to stay ahead of the next ransomware attack.
• Wireless displays make classrooms truly mobile
As more classrooms move away from the “sage on the stage” model with interactive white boards, wireless displays could be a nimble solution that truly makes presenting mobile.
