A Fireworks Display of Color at Common

If you have had the opportunity to drive past the Douglas Common in the past few weeks, we hope you are enjoying the riot of color the lilies on the banking have been providing.

The Common has a wonderful history of people joining together to create this beautiful addition to the Town of Douglas. The Douglas Common itself dates back to 1746 when the Town of Douglas was incorporated after being established in the 1730s on land set off from

Sherborn. The Common quickly became the focus of civic activity, and roads were laid out from surrounding towns to that area. However, its importance as a nexus of economic activity declined in the 19th century as industrial activity grew along the Mumford River in East Douglas, which also benefited from the arrival of the railroad.

The Town Common is currently part of the Old Douglas Center Historic District and the home of the Douglas War Memorial which includes the Soldiers

Monument and 2 original Griffin 3” Ordnance Rifles dating back to the Civil War. When Douglas was celebrating its 250th Anniversary, the Common Preservation Society was formed. The Society’s goal was to rejuvenate the Common. Around that time the suggestion that a gazebo be built on the Common was unanimously accepted by the Society and major fundraising began to raise the funds to provide materials for the gazebo. Over the past 27 years, the gazebo has continued on page 8

Uxbridge Youth Soccer Teams Win M.A.Y.S League Championship

U14 Division 1 Girls (pictured above). The U12 Division 2 Boys (pictured at left) went all the way to their championship game falling to top-seed Auburn.

This spring, The Uxbridge Youth Soccer League had one of its most successful seasons in its 40-year history.

Three travel teams qualified for the Midland Area Youth Soccer playoffs, including the U14 Division 1 Boys, the U14 Division 1 Girls, and the U12 Division 2 Boys.

The playoffs, which took place this June, featured the best youth soccer teams across Central Massachusetts. The U14 Boys team claimed the #1 seed and advanced directly to the semi-finals. They won their semi-final game 6-1 and moved on to the championship game to face Shrewsbury. It was a tight game, but the boys triumphed with a double overtime goal with 30 seconds left, winning 3- 2 and claiming the U14 Division 1 Boy’s Championship.

The U14 Girls held the #2 seed and faced Holden in the semi-finals, defeating them 2-1. In the championship game, the girls played hard on a rainsoaked field and defeated #1 seeded Shrewsbury 2-1 to claim the U14 Division 1 Girls Championship.

Both teams moved on to the Massachusetts Tournament of Champions against the best in the state. They both represented Uxbridge well, winning a round-robin tournament game.

The #2-seeded U12 Boys Division 2 team played well in the MAYS league playoffs, winning a quarterfinal game against Shrewsbury 5-2. They defeated Holden in the semi-finals 2-0 before falling to top-seeded Auburn in the championship game.

Registration is now open for the fall soccer season. Limited spots remain in the travel program, for grades 3-10, with the season kicking off in late August. If you are interested in playing, please sign up as soon as possible.

The In-Town program for PreK-3 to Grade 2 will begin in early September in coordination with the new England Revolution Academy. Registration is now available and will be open through the end of August. The program is an excellent opportunity to introduce children to soccer under the expert guidance of a new England Revolution Academy coach.

David Moura, currently the Dean of Students at Uxbridge High School, has been named the President of the Massachusetts High School Football Coaches’ Association. He has previously served the organization as a vice president, recording secretary, and league representative.

“I am very honored to serve as the President of the MHSFCA for this coming year,” said Mr. Moura. “Our outgoing President Tom Bingham did a tremendous job this past year taking on initiatives such as the current playoff proposal while getting football coaches from Central and Western Mass more involved with the Association. My hope is that I, along with our executive committee, will continue to do the great work that was done by our predecessors and give our coaches the resources and guidance that they may need as the season unfolds.”

As President of the MHSFCA, Moura will oversee the operations of the executive committee. The association sponsors coaches’ clinics, events for student-athletes, and all-state teams for students, while also offering feedback and guidance to state committees on such topics as practice procedures, game scheduling, and playoff formats. The MHSFCA also sponsors a Hall of Fame that recognizes the contributions of outstanding coaches across the Commonwealth.

Previously an assistant coach at UMass-Dartmouth, Dartmouth High

School, and Dighton Rehoboth Regional High School, Moura also served as head coach at D-R, helping the team advance to Gillette Stadium and a Super Bowl bid in 2018. He has maintained a presence in coaching since arriving at Uxbridge, as he serves as a volunteer coach with the Spartans for

both football and track and field. As Dean of Students, Moura assists with the daily operations of the school; the bulk of his responsibilities include the coordination of Uxbridge’s robust internship program, which is a hallmark of UHS’ nationally recognized career pathway programs.

Uxbridge High School Athletic Hall of Fame Inducts Class of 2023

The Uxbridge High School Athletic Hall of Fame will induct its Class of 2023 in a ceremony scheduled for november 11. This year’s class features nine standout student-athletes, one coach, and for the first time, an entire team. While connecting the storied athletic past of UHS to its present, the Hall of Fame strives to recognize and honor deserving athletes, coaches, teams, and contributors for their impact and accomplishments.

The induction of the Class of 2023 will take place at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, november 11th, 2023 at Blissful Meadows Country Club, located at 801 Chocolog Road in Uxbridge. Individual tickets, priced at $50 each, will go on sale in September for the event. Inquiries regarding the event can be directed via email to uhshalloffame@uxbridge.k12.ma.us, or to the Secretary of the Committee, Chuck Paszkewicz, at cpuhshof@gmail.com.

This year’s induction class includes:

1981-82 Boys Basketball Team

The team credited with inspiring a new tradition of excellence at Uxbridge High School, the 1981-82 boys basketball team won the first district championship in school history. They finished with a record of 18-5. Coached by Mark Donahue and Dean Tourangeau, this will be the first group inducted in the “team category” to the UHS Athletic Hall of Fame.

Allison Cahill, Class of 1999

Arguably the best basketball player ever to play at Uxbridge, Allison graduated as the all time leading scorer in basketball holding the boys and girls record of 1446 varsity points. She was an excellent long range shooter for Coach Dean Tournageau’s squad, with a game-high of 42 points, which still stands as the secondbest single game performance in school history. She was also a captain of the softball team at UHS. A graduate of Princeton University, she was a collegiate 1000 point scorer, graduating in 2003 after serving as the team captain in basketball. Allison plays professional tackle football as quarterback for the Boston Renegades. She has played on teams that have won 7 national Championships: 3 with the Boston Militia and 4 with the Renegades. She is in her 20th season in the league, and she just surpassed 25,000 career passing yards.

emily Cahill, Class of 2013

Emily has been elected to the Hall of Fame in her first year of eligibility, having completed one of the most storied track and field careers in school history. She holds numerous school records competing in both indoor and outdoor track and field (considering the school did not have a track facility at the time). She set and broke - and continues to hold - school records in the high jump, triple jump, 100 meter hurdles, and 200 meters, and she also was part of a team that set the school record in the 800-meter relay.

Dan Clarke, Class of 1994

Dan Clarke excelled in Cross Country, Basketball, and Baseball as a Captain and All Star. He earned 10 varsity letters and played on District E champion teams in both basketball and baseball, while also earning a place as an individual in the Massachusetts Cross Country Championship race.

In his senior year, Dan was selected the Boys XC Coach's Award winner, named to the First Team All Academic in Basketball, won a District E Athletic Director Award, and was chosen Spartan of the Year.

Meghan (Gaskell)

Creighton, Class of 2002

A rare four year varsity player in three sports, including field hockey, basketball, and softball, Meghan was a three time MVP for Coach Joe McCourt’s softball team. The crafty pitcher holds the school record for career strikeouts (725) as she compiled a 23-1 record her senior year. She amassed 224 strikeouts in a single season (2000-01) besides holding the school record for 61 varsity career wins on the mound. Also a feared hitter at the plate, Meghan ranks 4th all time with 113 hits in her varsity career. The multi talented athlete was named to multiple First Team All Star squads for all three sports as well as being recognized with the Coaches Award for those sports. Meghan went to play four years at Babson College, named League MVP her senior year while earning second team All American.

Mark Donahue, Coach & Athletic Director

Mark Donahue becomes the third coach inducted into the UHS Athletic Hall of Fame. In a coaching career that spanned parts of four decades, Mr. Donahue was the longtime head basketball coach, amassing 397 career victories, three Clark Tournament championships, and two district titles. In 35 years, his teams advanced to the state tournament 28 times. He also coached girls cross country, compiling a record of 195-32. He was inducted into the Massachusetts Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2014. He also served UHS as its athletic director before retiring from the post in 2015.

This spring and summer the Douglas Simon Fairfield Public Library has been hosting programs for children such as Music and Movement at the gazebo. The gazebo is also available for private activities provided a Common Use Permit is obtained by contacting BettyAnn McCallum at 508476-2675. The Common Use Permit fee is $50 and is used completely for upkeep of the Common.

The volunteers from the Douglas Common Preservation Society have had a very busy and productive year following along with the original goals of the Common Preservation Society to rejuvenate and beautify the Common.

Spring has brought many projects. We removed all the grass around the monument, replaced it with mulch and planted with red geraniums and hostas, which were donated by Karen Sherlock. All benches have a new coat of much-needed paint, and the light poles

Also, the massive job of weeding the entire banking where the lilies bloom and spreading mulch has been completed. We would like to thank Chris Staruk, from Staruk Trucking and Excavating, for his donation and delivery of 20+ yards of mulch for the beautification of the Common, and thanks to the Douglas Police Department for providing the detail to protect us while we were spreading the mulch! Many thanks to Bill Porter and his crew from WHP Trucking for all their assistance with our big projects.

In May we started our Daffodil Drive to raise donations to purchase more than 1200 daffodil bulbs which will be planted this fall. We expect the Common to be as beautiful in the spring as it is now during the summer.

Looking toward the future, we have plans for a Concert on the Common with Kayla Drew on August 4th from 7-8 p.m. no fee to attend, but donations to the Douglas Common Preservation Society will be accepted.

Faith Kennedy of Hummingbird

Holistic Center will be offering “Discover Tai Chi on the Common” on August 19th from 9-10 a.m. $10/person

We are in the process of organizing a Yard Sale/Vendor Sale on September 9th on the Common from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. More information will be available on the Douglas Common Facebook page.

Our most recent addition to the Common, thanks to a very generous donation, is a large planter filled with flowers in memory of Brenda Ballou, “Who dedicated her time, talent and vision to help create this beautiful Common for the Town of Douglas.”

There are plans for the electrical box to be painted this year with a beautiful Douglas-themed mural thanks to local artist, Suzanne Maddocks-Gagnon.

While the Town does a wonderful job of taking care of tree and grass maintenance, volunteers and donors have been responsible for the rest of the work it takes to care for the Common. Coming together to show their pride in our Common, the heartwarming support of volunteers spending the time to get things done and the monetary support of our many donors who help fund purchases of materials is what makes Douglas special. It truly takes a Village!

The Society is in the process of applying for a grant from the Mass Cultural Council for next year, with assistance from Jennifer Zifcak of the Douglas Cultural Council.

There are two ways you can help to continue our efforts to beautify the Common...either contact Lynn Paresky at 508-561-6210 to be a part of the volunteer group who garden or decorate, or help cover costs by sending a donation to Douglas Common Preservation Society, 76 nW Main St., Douglas, MA 01516. Checks made payable to Douglas Common Preservation Society or by Venmo@Kathleen-Sugrue-Richards. note it is for Daffodil Drive.

Taft STEAM Team grows crops with hydroponics and then donates food

In the Spring of 2023 school year, Taft School STEAM Lab had formed a partnership with the Fork Farms with hydroponics in the classroom. The Taft STEAM Lab was able to purchase a single flex farm in March when Ms. Gallerani was awarded a grant from MassCue. A flex farm is an indoor, vertical hydroponic system. It does not require soil, pesticides, or herbicides. The system has 288 plant spaces and can produce 25 pounds of leafy greens each grown cycle. This is an opportunity for students to be given a hands-on learning experience of the plant life cycle, where food comes from and new farming technology. In May, students started planting Green Star Lettuce, Cinnamon Basil and Cilantro in rockwool to start growing. The Green Star Lettuce was picked to eat a healthy food for a STEAM snack.

The Cinnamon Basil was picked for the purpose of sensory for students who do not have strong vision. The Cilantro was picked by Ms. Gallerani's  English as a Second Language Learners as their favorite spice to use at home! The students were extremely excited to transplant the seed-

lings  in the flex farm, where they would continue to grow until harvest!

The students were tasked with monitoring  and recording the growth of the plants and checking the water quality. In June, it was finally time for Harvest! The students were extremely excited! Sam, a representative from Flex Farm, came down from new Hampshire to spend the day in the STEAM Lab harvesting  our crops. The students were able to harvest their lettuce and basil and immediately get to taste their crop. The students were extremely  proud and loved the taste of the lettuce! The students harvest roughly 28 pounds of lettuce in a month!!!

All access lettuce was given to Taft School families and donated to Mendon Street Kitchen for parents to try their lettuce! As STEAM Lab continues this amazing project in the fall, the ultimate goal is for the students to continue to learn about the science and technology of growing their food. The harvest lettuce would be given to the school's cafeteria for staff and students to have a local source and healthy meal.

Weaving Community through Art & Music at the Alternatives’ Whitin Mill

ValleyCAST, the arts and culture arm of Open Sky Community Services, is proud to announce the return of its Free Summer Concert Series featuring an incredible line-up of local bands playing a wide variety of popular music. Enjoy Rock n' Roll, Big Band, Country, Folk, new Orleans Jazz, Bluegrass, Classic R&B, Funk, Reggae, Blues, and even a Symphony Orchestra.

The concert series, now in its 14th year, is one of ValleyCAST’s most popular events at the Alternatives’ Whitin Mill drawing hundreds of people yearly.

This year the series kicked off with a special event on Thursday, June 29th.

Two bands played back-to-back in the Dennis H. Rice Community Plaza on the same night as the opening reception of the new interactive Weaving

Community exhibit in the Spaulding R. Aldrich Heritage Gallery at the same location. Hundreds of people participated in the event.

The Free Summer Concert Series continues every Thursday evening on the plaza from 6:00–8:00 p.m. through August 31st at the Alternatives’ Whitin Mill, 50 Douglas Road, Whitinsville. In case of inclement weather, the concerts move indoors to the Singh Performance Center at the same location.

Concert goers are invited to wander in and out of the Heritage Gallery during the concerts to explore the Weaving Community exhibit. Interactive displays and two looms are set up in the gallery for people to try their hands at weaving and participate in community weaving projects with their neighbors.

There are also examples of weaving on exhibit by local artists and weaving organizations where one can learn about textile weaving, basket weaving, loom weaving, and read a brief history of weaving. They can also sign up for weaving workshops offered in August and again in the fall.

The Weaving Community exhibit will be open to all concert goers from 6:008:00 p.m. on Thursday nights and during regular gallery hours MondayFriday 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The last day of exhibit is during ValleyCAST’s Art & Music Makers Festival on Sept.30th from 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

“We are so excited to present our Weaving Community exhibit during our Free Summer Concert Series this year. People will enjoy music by talent-

ed, local musicians and they will learn about and participate in community weaving with their neighbors.” says Cristi Collari, Director of Community Outreach.

The Blackstone Valley Art Association and The Worcester County Camera Club have collaborated to showcase the art exhibition for extended hours from Oct. 20 – 29 in the community room of the library. Additional weekday and Sunday hours have been added.

Photography and all forms of twodimensional artwork are welcomed, with a maximum of four entries per artist. The Art Call will remain open until midnight of the day, 500 entries are received. All artwork meeting acceptance criteria will be displayed online. Visit https://smallstonesfestival.org/ to submit artwork.

A distinguished panel of six jurors

will select 144 works to appear in the exhibit and cash prize winners in fine arts and photography categories.

Awards include first, second and third cash prize winners and juror’s choice (six awards). A popular choice award for each category will be voted by viewers. Cash awards are $500 for first; $250 for second; and $100 for third place. The hardbound exhibition catalog will feature the juried artwork and will be sold online.

The Festival co-chairs Carolyn Kinloch-Winkler of the Blackstone Valley Art Club and Sue Cardosi of the Worcester County Camera Club are working with a committee of eleven to provide a free fine art and photography

festival for the greater central Massachusetts community.

Fun activities at Plummer Place

growing the generations

Plummer Place, Home of the northbridge Senior Center, hosted another intergenerational program called “Growing the Generations” for older adults in the community and local Daisy/Brownie Girl Scout Troop #65224.  Amy Cowen, program and volunteer coordinator of Plummer Place, and Krista Kugler, Daisy/Brownie troop leader, coordinated the opportunity where the girls were able to enjoy a morning with some older adults planting many different kinds and colors of flowers, appreciating one another’s company, and partaking in some light refreshments while also sharing stories with one another of summers to come and of summers past.

Many of the attendees remembered one another from a former program held at Plummer Place this winter called Puzzle Pals. Others formed new friendships and a great time was had by all! Plummer Place would like to thank Girl Scout Troop #65224 and the Friends of northbridge Elders (FInE) for sponsoring this event. "We had such a great time!  Romeo built a wonderful and creative variety of birdhouses and my husband and I were able to pick two different

Intrepid Readers August meeting set

All are invited to join the Intrepid Readers at the Simon Fairfield Public Library, 290 Main St., Douglas, on August 8th  at 6:30 PM to discuss Robert Weintraub's  no Better Friend : One Man, One Dog, and Their Extraordinary Story of Courage and Survival in WWII.

This is a remarkable story of Royal Air Force technician Frank Williams and Judy, a purebred pointer, who met in an internment camp during WWII. Judy was a fiercely loyal animal who sensed danger and instinctively mistrusted anyone in enemy uniform. Their relationship deepened throughout their imprisonment. The dog became a beacon for the men, who saw in her survival a flicker of hope for their own.

Copies of the book are available at the Library. Call 508476-2695 for more information. Homemade treats inspired by the book will also be available.

BVT named a PLTW Distinguished H.S. Six Years in a Row

The nationally recognized nonprofit organization Project Lead the Way (PLTW) has named Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School (BVT) a 2022-23 PLTW Distinguished School. It is the sixth consecutive year that the school has earned this national recognition.

"It is an impressive honor to be recognized for our continuous commitment to empowering student access, engagement, and achievement in our PLTW programs," said SuperintendentDirector Dr. Michael F. Fitzpatrick. "I am immensely proud of our students and staff who always aspire to achieve in all aspects of the curriculum. This credential is a testament to the quality of cross-curricular instruction and those willing to do the work."

BVT is one of 262 high schools to receive this honor for providing broad access to transformative learning experiences for its students through the PLTW Computer Science, Biomedical Science, and Engineering pathways.

PLTW is a nonprofit organization that serves millions of PreK-12 students and teachers in over 12,200 schools nationally.

To be eligible for this designation, the school had to meet the following criteria: offer at least three PLTW courses; of those who participated in PLTW, at least 33% took two or more PLTW courses during their high school tenure; and at least 95% of students completed the PLTW End-of-Course assessments;

have strategies and procedures in place to support reasonably proportional representation regarding race, ethnicity, poverty, and gender.

The school offers a total of ten PLTW courses; five courses from the Engineering Pathway, three courses from the Computer Science Pathway and two courses from the Biomedical Science Pathway.

The PLTW Engineering courses empower high school students to step into the role of an engineer and adopt a problem-solving mindset. Students engage in collaborative, real-life activities like working with a client to design a home, program electronic devices or robotic arms, and explore algae as a biofuel source.

The PLTW Computer Science interdisciplinary courses engage students in compelling, real-world computer sci-

ence challenges. As students work together to design solutions, they learn more than just how to code, developing computational thinking and communication skills for success in an increasingly technology-based economy.

PLTW Biomedical Science introduces high school students to medicine and human body systems and the vast array of biomedical science careers. Students take on the same real-world challenges as biomedical science professionals throughout the program, preparing them for careers in medical and healthrelated fields.

BVT is proud to be part of a community of PreK-12 schools, colleges, universities, and corporate and philanthropic partners across the country united around a passion for providing students with inspiring, engaging, and empowering learning opportunities

through its PLTW course offerings.
